IELTS Listening: Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5; Listening Section 1; Family Excursions; with recordings, solutions, tips and best explanations

This IELTS Listening post is based on the solutions and explanations for Cambridge IELTS 12 Academic Test 5 Listening Section 1 . All the questions in this section have been discussed with their solutions along with the best explanations. I hope this post will help new learners of IELTS and candidates to understand different problems related to IELTS Listening and guide them properly to attain a good band score.

In the IELTS Listening test, you will hear some recordings from which you have to answer questions that are printed in a booklet. You’ll hear the recordings for 30 minutes and you’ll need to answer the questions while you listen. There are 4 parts to this test; each part contains 10 questions and a single piece of recording related to the questions. At the end of the test, you’ll have 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the question booklet to the answer sheet. You must use a pencil; no pen or coloured markers are allowed.

In this post, we’re looking at the solutions and explanations for Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5 Section 1 (Questions 1-10).

Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5 Part 1:

Questions 1-10: Completing notes with ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

The title of the notes is: FAMILY EXCURSIONS

Play the following recording:

As you get around 30-40 seconds to have a look at questions 1-4, you must underline the keywords (words that help us to find out answers for each question) correctly.

Let’s have a quick look at the questions and mark the KEYWORDS with a pencil:

IELTS Listening: Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5; Listening Section 1; Family Excursions; with recordings, solutions, tips and best explanations

(I’ve marked the KEYWORDS with a yellow marker to help you understand better; don’t do that in the exam, YOU MUST USE A PENCIL.)

The yellow lines and circles are the keywords of the questions which can help us find the answers.

Now, let’s listen to each part of the recording and find the answer for questions 1-4.

Question no. 1:

  • Can take photos of the _________ that surround the lake

Here, in this question, our KEYWORDS are take photos and surround the lake , which means that we need to listen to any information given about taking photos of something that surrounds the lake. We must listen carefully to the person (the lady) detailing about the excursion. Let’s listen to the recording.

As you listen to the last part of this clip, the lady (the excursion information provider) says, “…. . .. And don’t forget to take pictures of the mountains . They’re all around you when you’re on the boat and they look fantastic.”

Here, take pictures matches with take photos in the question. Also, They’re all around you when you’re on the boat = surround the lake in the question.

So, the answer is: mountains

Question no. 2:

  • Visit can include a 40-minute ride on a __________

Here, our KEYWORDS are 40-minute ride on , which means we need to find information about any transport which is used for the 40-minute ride. Let’s listen to the recording:

Listen to the last half part of the clip where you’ll hear the lady talking about the 40-minute ride. She says, “.. .. .. Well, there’s also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a horse , if he wants. .. ..”

Here, 40-minute trek means 40-minute ride and the ride is on a horse .

So, the answer is: horse

Question no. 3:

  • Visitors can walk in the farm’s ________ by the lake

Here, our KEYWORDS are walk in , farm’s and by the lake , which means we need to listen to the lady if she talks about an area inside the farm where visitors can walk around. The area is by or beside the lake. Ok? Let’s listen to the recording:

Again, if you listen to the last half of the clip, the lady talks about a place that is situated by the side of the lake where visitors can walk. “.. .. There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm – they’ll be just at their best now. You could easily spend an hour or two there . ”

Here, along the side of the lake = by the lake, belong to the farm = farm’s, You could easily spend an hour or two there = Visitors can walk in ,

So, the answer is: gardens

Question no. 4:

  • _________ is available at extra cost

Here, our KEYWORDS are available and extra cost . So, we need to find information about any service that is available during the cruise or farm visit that is not included in the basic service price but can be acquired if people pay extra for that. Let’s listen to the recording:

In the clip, the gentleman asks, “And can we get lunch there?” The lady replies, “ You can , and it’s very good, though it’s not included in the basic cost . You pay when you get there.”

Here, You can means the lunch is available, though it’s not included in the basic cost means extra cost .

So, the answer is: lunch

This is the end of the first part of Listening Section 1. Now, you are given 30 seconds to check your answers.

TIP: You shouldn’t spend the time checking the answers now. You have 10 minutes at the end of the test to write the answers in the answer sheet. You can check the answers that time.

Now, you should read ahead questions 5-10.

IELTS Listening: Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5; Listening Section 1; Family Excursions; with recordings, solutions, tips and best explanations

(I’ve marked the KEYWORDS with a yellow marker to help you understand better; don’t do that in the exam, YOU MUST USE A PENCIL. And don’t take more than 30 seconds to read this part of the question.)

Now, let’s listen to each part of the recording and find the answer for questions 5-10.

Question no. 5:

  • Cyclists explore the Back Road
  • A _______ is provided

Here, our KEYWORDS are, Cyclists explore , Back Road , and provided . This means we need to listen to the recording for something that is provided (given to the cyclists which they can use to explore the Back Road). Let’s listen to the recording:

In this clip the lady talks about the Cycling trips. She says, “. . . . and then go on a cycling trip . There’s a trail there called the Back Road – you could easily spend three or four hours exploring it, and the scenery’s wonderful. They’ll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise – there’s no extra charge.”

Here, cycling trip means the trip where Cyclists explore , give means provided ,

So, the answer is: map

Question no. 6:

  • Only suitable for cyclists who have some _________

For this question, we need to listen to something (some sort of skills or experience perhaps) that cyclists need. (You can guess this answer and check whether your guess is correct or not; if not correct, don’t be upset; guessing will come to you gradually.) Let’s listen to this recording:

Here, in this clip, the man asks about the difficulty of the 40-minute cycle trip. The lady answers, “ . . .Quite challenging in places. It wouldn’t be suitable for your seven-year-old. It needs someone who’s got a bit more experience . ”

Here, It needs someone = Only suitable for ,

So, the answer is: experience

Question no. 7:

  • – bikes can be hired from ____________ ( near the Cruise Ship Terminal )

The question asks us to find out the name of the place from where bikes can be hired. Let’s listen to the recording:

In this clip, the man asks if he could hire a bike from any place. The lady replies, “Yes, there’s a place in the city. It’s called Ratchesons .” The man then asks her to spell it and the lady spells the name for him, “ R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S . It’s just by the Cruise Ship Terminal.”

So, the answer is: Ratchesons

Question no. 8:

  • Cyclists need:
  • a repair kit
  • food and drink
  • a ________ ( can be hired )

Our KEYWORDS for this question are a repair kit , food and drink and can be hired . This means we will find the answer just after the lady mentions a repair kit and food and drink. Let’s listen to the recording:

In this clip, when the lady mentions that the man needs to take a repair kit and food (snack) and drink (water) for the ride, the man asks, “And I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place?” The lady replied positively .

Therefore, along with the repair kit and food and drink, the man also needs to hire (rent) helmet .

So, the answer is: helmet

Question no. 9:

  • – There are no _________ or accommodation in the area.

The question indicates that there are two matters/things which are not available in this area. One of them is accommodation . We need to listen for the other. Let’s listen:

Here, in this clip, the lady says, “ .. . It’s a great ride but you want to be well prepared because it’s very remote – you won’t see any shops round there, or anywhere to stay ,  .. .. ..”

Here, won’t see = no , stay = accommodation ,

So, the answer is: shops

Question no. 10:

  • Total cost for whole family of cruise and farm visit : $ ________

The question asks us to listen to the recording and find out the total cost for the cruise and farm visit for the man, his wife and his son (child) and daughter (adult) . Let’s listen to the recording carefully and count the amount of money to be paid:

Ok, here’s the problem We hear the lady mentioning the amount of money 5 times. So? Which one is the correct answer.

First She says, “Let’s see, that’d be one adult and one child for the cruise with farm tour, that’s $117 , and an adult and a child for the cruise only so that’s $214 dollars altogether. Oh, wait a minute; how old did you say your daughter was?”

This means she had mistaken his daughter as a child and included her cost as a child’s cost. When she learns that the daughter is 15, she says, “Then I’m afraid it’s $267 because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75 instead of the child fare which is $22 – sorry about that.”

So, the answer is: 267

Special Tips:

1. be careful about capital letters/ block letters for proper nouns. in this section, the word ‘ratchesons’ is a proper noun; so the word must be written with a capital letter in the beginning. otherwise, your answer will be wrong. 2. be careful about the dollar ($) or pound (£) sign or symbol. if it’s included in the question paper, you can’t write it as your answer. here, in this question, the sign is already on the question paper. so, the answer will be the number only..

Family Excursions Listening Answers: Explanation

Explanation:

The woman told the man not to forget to click pictures of the  mountains  surrounded by the lake.

The man asked what activities his children could do. The woman replied that there were animals they could feed and also do a 14-minute trek on the  horse .

The woman told the man there was a very beautiful garden along the side of the lake that belonged to the farm only.

The man asks the woman if  lunch is available at the farm, to which the woman replies that it is, but it is not included in the cost, so they need to pay for it.

The woman told the man they would get a  map for the cruise when they arrived.

The man asks if there is something else they could do on the trek, to which the woman replies that they can go cycling at a place called the back road. However, she said it is suitable for a bit more  experienced people and will not be suitable for his 7-year-old kid.

The woman tells the man that there is a place in the city called  Ratchesons , just by the cruise ship terminal, where he and his daughter can rent a bicycle and cycle on the back road.

The man asked if he could rent a  helmet as well, and the woman said that yes, he could.

The woman told the man that there would not be any  shops  around the back road as it is a very remote place, so he needed to be well prepared with everything before going cycling.

The man asks for the prices for the cruise, to which the woman says that it will cost  $267 as his daughter is 15 and needs to pay the adult fare, which is $75, instead of the child fare, which is $22.

Q. How is IELTS listening calculated?

Ans.   The number of correct answers shall be considered when assessing the IELTS Listening Test. The overall raw score shall be contributed to correctly by each answer. Đáp án IELTS Listening Cambridge 12 Test 5 – Transcript & Answers

Section 1: family excursions .

A – Phân tích câu hỏi

Questions 1-10: Complete the notes below. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

B – Giải thích đáp án

TC Employee: Hi. Can I help you?

Nhân viên chăm sóc: Xin chào. Tôi có thể giúp gì cho anh?

Visitor: I’d like to find out if you have any excursions suitable for families.

TC Employee: Sure. How about taking your family for a cruise? We have a steamship that takes passengers out several times a day-it’s over 100 years old.

Visitor: That sounds interesting. How long is the trip?

Khách: Nghe có vẻ thú vị. Chuyến đi trong bao lâu vậy?

TC Employee: About an hour and a half. And don’t forget to take pictures of the mountains . They’re all around you when you’re on the boat [Q1] and they look fantastic .

Visitor: OK. And I assume there’s a café or something on board?

TC Employee: Sure. How old are your children?

Nhân viên chăm sóc: Chắc chắn rồi ạ. Cháu nhà anh bao nhiêu tuổi rồi?

Visitor: Er, my daughter’s fifteen, and my son’s seven.

Khách: Con gái tôi mười lăm tuổi và con trai bảy tuổi.

TC Employee: Right. Well, there are various things you can do once you’ve crossed the lake, to make a day of it. One thing that’s very popular is a visit to the Country Farm. You’re met off the boat by the farmer and he’ll take you to the holding pens , where the sheep are kept. Children love feeding them!

Visitor: My son would love that. He really likes animals.

Khách: Thằng bé nhà tôi rất thích điều đó. Nó thực sự thích động vật.

TC Employee: Well, there’s also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a horse , if he wants [Q2] .

Nhân viên chăm sóc: Cũng có một chuyến tham quan 40 phút quanh trang trại trên lưng ngựa, nếu cu cậu muốn.

Visitor: Do you think he’d manage it? He hasn’t done that before.

TC Employee: Sure. It’s suitable for complete beginners.

Visitor: Ah, good.

Khách: Oh vậy thì tốt.

TC Employee: And again, visitors are welcome to explore the farm on their own, as long as they take care to close gates and so on. There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm [Q3] – they’ll be just at their best now. You could easily spend an hour or two there.

Visitor: OK. Well that all sounds good. And can we get lunch there?

Khách: OK. Tất cả đều có vẻ ổn. Và chúng tôi có thể ăn trưa ở đó không?

TC Employee: You can, and it’s very good, though it’s not included in the basic cost. You pay when you get there [Q4] .

Visitor: Right.

Visitor: So is there anything else to do over on that side of the lake?

Khách: Vậy có thứ gì khác thú vị ở bên kia hồ không?

TC Employee: Well, what you can do is take a bike over on the ship and then go on a cycling trip. There’s a trail there called the Back Road – you could easily spend three or four hours exploring it, and the scenery’s wonderful. They’ll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise – there’s no extra charge [Q5] .

Visitor: What’s the trail like in terms of difficulty?

Khách: Đi đường mòn có khó không?

TC Employee: Quite challenging in places. It wouldn’t be suitable for your seven-year-old. It needs someone who’s got a bit more experience [Q6] .

Visitor: Hmm. Well, my daughter loves cycling and so do I, so maybe the two of us could go, and my wife and son could stay on the farm. That might work out quite well. But we don’t have bikes here… is there somewhere we could rent them?

TC Employee: Yes, there’s a place here in the city. It’s called Ratchesons [Q7] .

Visitor: I’ll just make a note of that – er, how do you spell it?

Khách: Để tôi ghi lại, chị đánh vần giúp tôi nhé

TC Employee: R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S. It’s just by the cruise ship terminal.

Nhân viên chăm sóc: R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S. Nó ở gần bến tàu du lịch.

Visitor: OK.

TC Employee: You’d also need to pick up a repair kit for the bike from there to take along with you, and you’d need to take along a snack and some water – it’d be best to get those in the city.

Visitor: Fine. That shouldn’t be a problem. And I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place?

TC Employee: Sure, you should definitely get that [Q8] . It’s a great ride, but you want to be well prepared because it’s very remote – you won’t see any shops round there, or anywhere to stay, so you need to get back in time for the last boat [Q9] .

Visitor: Yeah. So what sort of prices are we looking at here?

Khách: Vâng. Về chi phí thì sao?

TC Employee: Let’s see, that’d be one adult and one child for the cruise with farm tour, that’s $117, and an adult and a child for the cruise only so that’s $214 dollars altogether. Oh, wait a minute, how old did you say your daughter was?

Visitor: Fifteen.

Khách: Mười lăm.

TC Employee: Then I’m afraid it’s $ 267[Q10] because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75 instead of the child fare which is $22 – sorry about that.

Nhân viên chăm sóc: Thế thì sẽ là 267 đô la vì cháu gái nhà anh sẽ bị tính vé người lớn, là 75 đô thay vì giá vé trẻ em là 22 đô – xin lỗi về điều đó.

Visitor: That’s OK. Er, so how do …

Khách: Được rồi. Ơ, vậy làm thế nào để…

Trudie: OK, Stewart. We need to start planning our paper on public libraries. Have you thought of an angle yet?

Trudie: OK, Stewart.

Stewart: Well, there’s so much we could look into. How libraries have changed over the centuries, for instance, or how different countries organise them. What do you think, Trudie?

Trudie: Maybe we should concentrate on this country, and try and relate the changes in libraries to external developments, like the fact that far more people can read than a century ago and that the local population may speak lots of different languages [Q21] .

Stewart: We could include something about changes in the source of funding, too.

Trudie: Yes, but remember we’re only supposed to write a short paper, so it’s probably best if we don’t go into funding in any detail.

Stewart: Right. Well, shall we just brainstorm a few ideas, to get started?

Trudie: OK. We obviously need to look at the impact of new technology, particularly the internet. Now that lots of books have been digitalised, people can access them from their own computers at home.

Stewart: And if everyone did that, libraries would be obsolete .

Trudie: Yes.

Stewart: But the digitalised books that are available online for free are mostly out of copyright, aren’t they? And copyright in this country lasts for 70 years after the author dies. So you won’t find the latest best-seller or up-to-date information [Q22] .

Trudie: That’s an important point. Anyway, I find it hard to concentrate when I’m reading a long text on a screen. I’d much rather read a physical book. And it takes longer to read on a screen.

Stewart: Oh, I prefer it. I suppose it’s just a personal preference.

Trudie: Mm. I expect that libraries will go on evolving in the next few years. Some have already become centres where community activities take place, like local clubs meeting there. I think that’ll become even more common.

Trudie: Mm.

Stewart: I’d like to think so, and that they’ll still be serving their traditional function, but I’m not so sure. There are financial implications, after all. What I’m afraid will happen is that books and magazines will all disappear, and there’ll just be rows and rows of computers [Q23] . They won’t look anything like the libraries we’re used to.

Trudie: Well, we’ll see.

Trudie: Cứ đợi xem mọi chuyện thế nào thôi.

Trudie: I’ve just had an idea. Why don’t we make an in-depth study of our local public library as background to our paper?

Stewart: Yes, that’d be interesting, and raise all sorts of issues. Let’s make a list of possible things we could ask about, then work out some sort of structure. For instance, um… we could interview some of the staff and find out whether the library has its own budget , or if that’s controlled by the local council [Q24] .

Trudie: And what their policies are. I know they don’t allow food, but I’d love to find out what types of noise they ban – there always seems to be a lot of talking, but never music. I don’t know if that’s a policy or it just happens.

Then there are things like how the library is affected by employment laws. I suppose there are rules about working hours, facilities for staff, and so on [Q25] .

Trudie: Right. Then there are other issues relating to the design of the building and how customers use it. Like what measures does the library take to ensure their safety ? [Q26] They’d need floor coverings that aren’t slippery, and emergency exits, for instance. Oh, and another thing – there’s the question of the kind of insurance the library needs to have, in case anyone gets injured [Q27] .

Stewart: Yes, that’s something else to find out. You know something I’ve often wondered?

Trudie: What’s that?

Trudie: Điều gì vậy?

Stewart: Well, you know they’ve got an archive of local newspapers going back years? Well, next to it they’ve got the diary of a well-known politician from the late 19th century. I wonder why it’s there [Q28] . Do you know what his connection was with this area?

Trudie: No idea. Let’s add it to our list of things to find out. Oh, I’ve just thought – you know people might ask in the library about local organisations, like sports clubs? Well, I wonder if they keep a database , or whether they just look online [Q29] .

Stewart: Right. I quite fancy finding out what the differences are between a library that’s open to the public and one that’s part of a museum [Q30] , for example, they must be very different.

Trudie: Mmm. Then something else I’d like to know is…

  • brainstorm (something) (verb) Nghĩa: (of a group of people) to all think about something at the same time, often in order to solve a problem or to create good ideas Ví dụ: Brainstorm as many ideas as possible.
  • obsolete (adj) Nghĩa: no longer used because something new has been invented Ví dụ: With technological changes many traditional skills have become obsolete.
  • fancy (verb) Nghĩa: [transitive] (British English, informal) to want something or want to do something Ví dụ: Do you fancy going out this evening?

IELTS LISTENING

FAMILY EXCURSIONS

TC EMPLOYEE: Hi. Can I help you?

VISITOR: I’d like to find out if you have any excursions suitable for families.

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure. How about taking your family for a cruise? Example We have a steamship that  takes passengers out several times a day  – it’s over 100 years old.

Attempt full listening test…

VISITOR: That sounds interesting. How long is the trip?

TC EMPLOYEE: About an hour and a half. Q 1 And don’t forget to take pictures of the mountains . They’re all around you when you’re on the boat and they look fantastic.

VISITOR: OK. And I assume there’s a cafe or something on board?

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure. How old are your children?

VISITOR: Er, my daughter’s fifteen, and my son’s seven.

TC EMPLOYEE: Right. Well, there are various things you can do once you’ve crossed the lake, to make a day of it. One thing that’s very popular is a visit to the Country Farm. You’re met off the boat by the farmer and he’ll take you to the holding pens, where the sheep are kept. Children love feeding them!

VISITOR: My son would love that. He really likes animals.

TC EMPLOYEE: Well, Q 2 there’s also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a horse , if he wants.

VISITOR: Do you think he’d manage it? He hasn’t done that before.

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure, It’s suitable for complete beginners.

VISITOR: Ah, good.

TC EMPLOYEE: And again, visitors are welcome to explore the farm on their own, as long as they take care to close dates and so on. Q 3 There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm  – they’ll be just at their best now. You could easily spend an hour or two there.

VISITOR: OK. Well that all sounds good. Q 4 And can we get lunch there ?

TC EMPLOYEE: You can, and it’s very good. though it’s not included in the basic cost. You pay when you get there.

VISITOR: Right.

VISITOR: So is there anything else to do over on that side of the lake?

TC EMPLOYEE: Well, what you can do is take a bike over on the ship and then go on a cycling trip. There’s a trail there called the Back Road – you could easily spend three or four hours exploring it. and the scenery’s wonderful. Q 5 They’ll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise – there’s no extra charge .

VISITOR: What’s the trail like in terms of difficulty?

TC EMPLOYEE: Quite challenging in places. It wouldn’t be suitable for your seven-year-old. Q 6 It needs someone who’s got a bit more experience .

Q 7 It’s called Ratchesons .

VISITOR: I’ll just make a note of that – er, how do you spell it?

TC EMPLOYEE: R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S. It’s just by the cruise ship terminal.

VISITOR: OK.

TC EMPLOYEE: You’d also need to pick up a repair kit for the bike from there to take along with you, and you’d need to take along a snack and some water – it’d be best to get those in the city.

VISITOR: Fine. That shouldn’t be a problem. And Q 8 I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place ?

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure, you should definitely get that. It’s a great ride, but you want to be well prepared because Q 9 it’s very remote – you won’t see get shops round there, or anywhere to stay , so you need to get back in time for the last boat.

VISITOR: Yeah. So what sort of prices are we looking at here?

TC EMPLOYEE: Let’s see, that’d be one adult and one child for the cruise with farm tour, that’s $117, and an adult and a child for the cruise only so that’s $214 dollars altogether. Oh, wait a minute, how old did you say your daughter was?

VISITOR: Fifteen.

TC EMPLOYEE: Then I’m afraid Q 10 it’s $267  because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75 instead of the child fare which is $22 – sorry about that.

VISITOR: That’s OK. Er, so how do …
