France Visa Requirements in Nigeria

Types of France Visa

  • Tourist visa
  • Business visa
  • Student visa
  • Airport Transit Visa (ATV)

Tourist visa : It enables you to visit France as a tourist. This type of visa does not allow a visitor to take up any job offer in Schengen countries. A single entry visa is usually issued to first timers. The French embassy determines the visa validity.

Business visa : This type of visa is issued to investors and travelers with the intention of visiting their business partners. This can also be issued to foreigners traveling to France for conference, short training/programme. You need an invitation from a host in France before you can apply for the business visa.

Student visa : For student visa, the prospective student must submit acceptance letter and all the necessary fees paid to the school. All applicants are advised to visit Alliance Française Lagos, Mike Adenuga Centre, 9, Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos for appointment and authentication before proceeding to VFS for biometric.

Airport Transit Visa (ATV) : Airport transit visa is for those whose final destination is not in any of the Schengen area. For example, if your final destination is London, UK, and your flight would transit in France/Netherlands, you must apply for an ATV before your travel date. KLM and Air France require that every traveler must be in possession of ATV before boarding.

France Airport Transit - ATV

We have three types of airport transit visa (ATV)

  • A one-way ATV: It allows one-way transit through a Schengen country.
  • A return ATV: This type of ATV authorizes return airport transit through one or two Schengen countries;
  • A multiple ATV: This authorizes several transits through one or more Schengen countries. For example, if your first leg is Air France (transit in France) from your home country to your final destination and your 2nd leg is KLM (transit in Netherlands) from your destination to your home country.

Please note that holders of ATVs are not allowed to enter the Schengen Area. If you have a connection between two airports in the Schengen Area, or if the airport through which you wish to enter the French territory is closed overnight for the duration of the transit, you are advised to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa.

Schengen visa is mainly intended for visitors/tourists planning to visit any of the areas.

If you plan on working, studying or doing business in any of the Schengen areas, you should not apply for the Schengen Visa, rather you should apply for the country’s visa.

For instance, if you plan traveling to France as a visitor or a tourist, you can safely apply for the Schengen visa. However, if you plan to go there for business, study, or work, then you should apply for the French visa.

This is a complete guide detailing how to apply for a French visa in Nigeria as well as the cost of French visa in Nigeria. The various requirements have also been discussed with links to application forms.

Before applying for a French visa, ensure that you have a clear idea of the visa type you’ll be applying for. If your chosen visa type does not correspond with your purpose of traveling, your visa application might be denied. Hence, ensure you choose the right visa type for your travel purposes.

To do this, you should consider your purpose of traveling, which I believe you already know. This should tally with the description of the visa type which you’ll eventually tick on your visa application forms.

The various types of French visa in Nigeria include:

How to Apply For a France Visa in Nigeria

French Visa application process can be broken up into two major phases:

Online phase

Offline phase.

To start your visa application, you’ll need to create a profile with the French embassy in Nigeria using their online portal. The process is quite simple and straightforward.

Once you create your visa profile, you can always log in to make changes, track your visa application progress and even check your visa type requirements.

To create your profile, visit the French embassy  official website and click on the ‘create account button’.

You’ll need to print your visa application form once you complete it online before submitting it.

The offline phase involves visiting the French visa office in Nigeria and submitting your visa application forms as well as supporting documents (required documents) for evaluation. You’ll also be required to make your payment at this stage. Therefore, you should go along with the visa and service fee (cash only).

At the French embassy, your biometrics will be captured and you’ll be asked to submit all the necessary documents. You’ll also be given a unique tracking number which you can use to track the progress of your visa application.

Once your visa is ready, you’ll be notified by the embassy for collection.

Applying for a French visa in Nigeria is quite easy. However, getting your visa approved is not so much easier. As such, you might want to prepare hard for your interview by providing sufficient reasons why you ‘need’ to travel to France as well as why you will eventually return to Nigeria when your time there is up.
