How to Travel From Hong Kong to Guangzhou – 4 Best Routes

Traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou it’s kind of confusing even for the local inhabitants of the mainland. Both locations are great outposts for, and it’s easy to get lost if you don’t know the language. We tried to solve the issue by making a brief compilation of the most accessible ways on how to travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou using public transportation. Try to follow our instructions to the letter to avoid getting lost.

how to travel from hong kong to guangzhou

Before you begin your travel into mainland China , make sure you are familiar with the routes, and also have your Chinese visa with you. Unlike traveling in Hong Kong where you don’t need a visa, going into mainland China will require one.  Also, if it’s your first time going into mainland, remember that English is not very common in Guangzhou. You may want to brush up on your Mandarin or get some interpreting help . Here are the different routes you can take to get from Hong Kong to Guangzhou.

Hong Kong To Guangzhou Distance: 129 km

Option 1: take the shenzhen high-speed train to guangzhou.

The high-speed Shenzhen to Guangzhou train is by far the best option for transportation, and it’s in the top of our list because of how efficient it is. The train still gathers some apprehension by the locals, but it’s the cheapest and quickest method to travel the Hong Kong to Guangzhou distance without hassles. It’s not recommended if you are carrying large amounts of luggage or if you are traveling with young children.

The trip begins in Shenzhen, where you need to take the MTR to Lo Wu . The travel from Hung Hom will take you about forty-five minutes, but you will be able to hop on the line at your convenience. The Lo Wu MTR station has a custom China Immigration checkpoint where you need to present your visa to mark your exit from Hong Kong to the mainland. The process is pretty easy and quick if you follow the sings.

After passing through China Immigration, you will be in Shenzhen. To get to the train station, you will have to exit immigration and walk straight. You will find the Shenzhen railway station in the large building at your left. It’s a five-minute walk. Locals use their ID card to get on the train, but you will have to buy a train ticket to Guangzhou from one of the counters. You can choose between first class and second class.

Prices & Tickets

You can buy tickets for the train from Shenzhen to Guangzhou either inside the train station or through the MRT Website . Prices can range anywhere from 80 RMB to about 100 RMB depending on the class and availability.

The high-speed trains depart from Shenzhen every 10 to 15 minutes and most of the times you can travel comfortably sit, but at rush hour you will have to stand.  Once you arrive at the mainland in Guangzhou East, you can either take the MTR or a taxi to your final destination. It is truly one of the most efficient ways to travel between Hong Kong and Guangzhou .

There are pros and cons to using the Shenzhen high-speed train. The pros we can list are the low price of making such a long trip and how fast it is once you get on the train. The cons are the imperative need to travel light, the trains don’t have accommodations for luggage, so make pack a light bag, and as we mentioned is not a good way to travel if you a large party or a family group that includes little kids, you are bound to lose someone in the confusion.

hong kong to guangzhou train

Option 2: Make the Trip on the NEW Hong Kong to Guangzhou High-Speed Train

There is a new high-speed rail train running directly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou that started to operate back in September of 2018. The train connects the Hong Kong Kowloon West station with the Guangzhou South station in forty-five minutes flat. This is the fastest direct route between the two cities and the trains run at least thirty times a day, something that makes it already a much more convenient service than the one offered by Kowloon/Guangzhou East Intercity service.

This train departs from the brand new Kowloon West station that is located between the Austin and Kowloon MTR stations. You can take a walk to Kowloon West arriving from Austin to the Kowloon MTR stations. Every train arrives at the Guangzhou South station located at the outer limits of Guangzhou city. You will have to take the MTR or face the traffic once you get to Guangzhou to get to your destination.

If you need to buy tickets for the Hong Kong to Guangzhou train, you can book online and collect them on the Kowloon West Station. If you are in Guangzhou, you can buy your tickets on any train station on the mainland. You can choose between second class tickets or regular business class to make your trip more comfortable. This train has a significant advantage over the previous option: you can carry as much luggage as you need since the trains are pretty spacious. The only downside of this service is that it is more expensive than other options on this guide.

Option 3: Take the Hong Kong to Guangzhou Intercity Through Train

The Intercity Through train is recognized as the most common way to cover the Hong Kong to Guangzhou distance used by foreigners. It’s not the same service as any of the High-Speed Train options we already described. The Intercity through train is much slower but is also a very relaxing way to travel between the cities and gives you some excellent sightseeing options to take advantage and get some great pictures.

The service currently offers twelve trips a day to each direction between Hung Hom in Hong Kong and Guangzhou East. The process to board it is pretty similar to catching a flight at the airport. You will have to be at the station at least one hour before your departure since you need to go through migration to check your passport and visa. You will have to wait for a moment in a waiting room before taking the train, and once you get on board, you will get to Guangzhou in two hours tops.

The price of this service is also one of the lowest on the list with the highest premium ticket costing only half of the total costs of the high-speed train. You can purchase tickets from Klook online service . It’s a good option if you are used to dealing with airports since the basic premises of boarding this train works in the same fashion. It’s also an excellent service if you need to arrive at the central part of Guangzhou, you won’t have to spend money on a cab to get there.

The Intercity through Train is very accommodating if you have a large amount of luggage, and it’s very friendly for large parties or families with kids. The slow pace works wonders for nervous travelers. Sadly this is also one of the most time-consuming means to travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. You have to make sure to board your train on time, the ticket is good for an upcoming trip if you miss yours, but you will have to wait a lot of time this line suffers from frequents delays and disruptions.

Option 4: Ride the Ferry from Hong Kong International Airport to Guangzhou

The last option is taking a ferry that departs from the Hong Kong International Airport to mainland China. This option is offered on the list as a last resource since it’s not really convenient if you need to get to Guangzhou. There are currently three ferries making the trip each day from each direction, is one of the easiest ways to get to Guangzhou only if you are flying in or out of the Hong Kong International Airport.

Overall, the full journey on the ferry takes about one hour and forty-five minutes. It’s also incredibly expensive even with the multiple class options to choose from. The closest you can get to downtown Guangzhou is arriving at the LianHuaShan port, and you will have to make a trip on a taxi for at least an hour to get to your destination. Ferry tickets can be bought online or at the ferry terminal. Just use this option if you need to go to a specific place, you will fare better with the other choices.

If you stay close to the metro station or port, you could take the metro to Lo Wu station first—the northern terminus of the East Rail line of Hong Kong—and then go through the immigration formalities.

Then, go from the Shenzhen Luohu Port to the nearby Shenzhen Railway Station. Finally, take the inter-city train to Guangzhou. It may be a bit complicated if you are not familiar with it.

The price is around US$23 for a metro ticket and a second-class seat. The travel time is about 3 hours. It is based on the time of crossing the border, as Luohu Port is the busiest land border in the world.

How to Plan a Pearl River Delta Tour from Hong Kong

Guangzhou and Shenzhen are booming megacities to explore . Guangzhou attracts droves of business people, and Shenzhen is becoming more of a tourist highlight. New malls, extremely tall skyscrapers with restaurants, stores and observatories, amusement parks, and bargain shopping areas are drawing people for cross-border excursions.

Special visa rules are making independent touring or private touring even easier than ever before . Here are our recommendations for where to shop, where to stay, how to travel, and what to do on a several day Pearl River region trip.

Guangzhou and Shenzhen Highlights

— why you should venture across the border.

Besides opportunities for bargain and luxury shopping , tourists enjoy the cheap, authentic Cantonese food .

Guangzhou is a wholesale shopping mecca. Hundreds of thousands of people, especially third world people and Russians, go to source wholesale every year. As one of China's biggest megacities, it has its own interesting tourist attractions and culture such as the Chimelong 's zoo and safari park that has more pandas anywhere outside of Chengdu.

Shenzhen is a boom city becoming the main tourist attraction in the region. The Ping An Tower is the world's 4th tallest building and has a luxury mall. The tall buildings/malls are places for luxury shopping, dining, accommodations, and sightseeing at lower prices than Hong Kong.

New Visa-Free / Quick Visa Guangdong Entry Options

Instead of incurring the waiting time and expense of getting a China tourist visa , there are three new short-term Guangdong Province entry options making tourism and travel easier than before .

Option 1: Shenzhen Special Economic Zone 5-Day Single Entry Visa

If you only want to visit Shenzhen , use the Shenzhen Economic Zone 5-day visa, as it's most convenient.

Entry rules keep changing. Now, tourists from almost all countries except the US and perhaps France can enter the Shenzhen Economic Zone on single entry 5-day visas.

  • Quick visas can only be obtained at the border at Luohu (Lo Wu, 9:00 am–22:30 pm), Huanggang Port (24 hours), and Shekou Port. It often takes only a few minutes.
  • For most countries, the fee is about 168 RMB or 215 HKD. However, for about two dozen South American and African countries, the fee can be several times more. For Russians and British, it is a little less than double.

Option 2: Visa-Free Pearl River Delta Tours

All visitors to Hong Kong and/or Macau are able to visit the surrounding Pearl River Delta (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, etc.) visa-free as long as they go with a registered tour group such as ours.

The stays in the Peal River Delta area can last 6 days or 144 hours for most countries, but for several countries, 21-day tours are possible. Travelers from certain selected Asian and European countries may also be eligible for 30-day tour visas. See Visa-Free Tour Guidelines.

Touring Guangdong Visa-Free with Us — Comfort and Stress Avoidance

Unless you can speak Chinese and/or have been in China before, once across the border, you can get bewildered . It might seem like a crowded chaotic mess with little English signage and a lot of tourist sharks, scammers, bad taxi drivers, and other people eyeing you as a way for quick yuan.

  • Avoid tourist shock: A lot of first timers go into tourist shock wondering around the huge Luohu border crossing and train and bus interchange area. You can avoid navigating public transportation and/or taxi ripoffs with our guide and driver.
  • Avoid tourist traps: As a first timer, you don't even know what the real money looks like, and you don't want to receive counterfeit money. It is a common scam against first timers.
  • Enjoyment and learning: We can teach you the travel basics, some language, and help you enjoy your trip more.
  • Flexibility: If you want to go to the border own your own and meet us for pickup on the other side, we can work with you.

The advantage of China Highlights is that our guide will accompany you and facilitate a stress-free tour you can plan yourself. Here's a suggestd Tour Plan for Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

Day 1: Shenzhen Entry

If you like tall buildings, malls, and luxury hotels, we can arrange a visit and stay at the Ping An Tower or KK100 . The sightseeing is amazing, and the rates are lower than you'd find in HK for a similar experience. The Ping An's hotel is the second highest in the world as of 2016. The KK100 is almost as tall as the ICC Tower in Hong Kong, and it also has a hotel on top.

Or if you'd enjoy experiencing other things in Shenzhen, tell us what you are looking for, and we can take you there and book accommodations.

Day 2: Bullet Train to Guangzhou + Shopping

If you want to experience taking the bullet train, go with our guide to Shenzhen North Station. We can help you get tickets (in advance) and find the correct waiting area. The trip takes about half an hour. Looking out the window, you can see a lot of Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Guangzhou scenery.

Get off at Guangzhou South Train Station. A top place to shop is Beijing Street or Shangxiajiu Street. We can take you there. You'll find cheaper authentic restaurants and cheaper shops off the main thoroughfares. Let us or our guide recommend the restaurants, stores, and hotels that fit what you are looking for. See Guangzhou Shopping .

For Guangzhou wholesale clothing: For getting down to business with serious haggling and looking through many hectares of shops and stalls, the area around Guangzhou Station is where to go.

Day 3 (and 4): Relax at Guangzhou Tourist Highlights

Enjoy a Pearl River Night Cruise, Chimelong's attraction-packed resort , or the Chen Ancestral Shrine for architecture or history. Then stay another night or go back to Hong Kong via the bullet train or our driver. Tell us what to do for another two days as you wish.

Contact us: Simply contact our travel experts by phone or email, and we'll arrange everything from pickup and accommodations in Hong Kong, travel to the border, and your private driver, accommodations, and guide. Tell us your general preferences, and our skilled experts and the guide will arrange your itinerary.

Option 3: 72 Visa-Free Guangzhou/Guangdong Entry

A third option is to travel throughout Guangdong Province on a 72-hour fly-in to >Guangzhou (Baiyun Airport).

The Airport South Station allows quick and inexpensive travel to the city on the city's quick, clean, and modern subway lines. The station is below the airport, and the extensive lines cover the whole city. There also airport shuttle bus lines available to go to specific areas.

For business: Tianhe is the central business district. Guangzhou attracts foreign merchants like a magnet to one of the world's foremost electronics (and many other products) manufacturing regions. The twice yearly Canton Fair is a major draw for businessmen.

To go to Shenzhen: The border city is becoming the tourist highlight in the region. You could go to the Guangzhou East Station and take the bullet train for an hour to go to Luohu. There you could take Subway Line 1 (罗宝线) from the Luohu border to several tourist spots such as Gou Wu Gong Yuan 购物公园 (Exit D) for Ping An Tower.

Private Driver/Guided Tours

What would be a better way to get around but by private vehicle . Go where you want quickly and efficiently, and the driver will drive and the guide/interpreter will help. You can arrange for our driver to wait for you at the airport, train station or your hotel.

Hong Kong and Guangzhou may only be separated by 111 miles (179 kilometers) and share a main language of Cantonese, but because Hong Kong is a Special Administrative District and Guangzhou is a part of mainland China, traveling between these two cities is slightly more complicated than traveling between two mainland cities.

There are no flights between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, but it is possible to travel between the two cities by train, bus, or car. Tourists may need to obtain a visa to cross into mainland China, if they don't already have one, and be prepared to change their currency if they're carrying any cash because Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Guangzhou uses the Chinese Yuan (RMB). Note that the estimated travel times below do not account for delays getting through the border.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Hong Kong to Guangzhou?

If your budget has no wiggle room, the bus is the cheapest way to get between Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Some bus operators that offer this cross-border route include Trans-Island Limousine Service , EE Bus , and China Travel Tours . Tickets usually cost between $9 and $18 with multiple daily departures available.

When you cross the border with the bus, you will have to disembark with your luggage and pass through immigration on foot. After you go through immigration, you won't be getting back on the same bus. Instead, the bus company will provide a new bus on the other side for passengers to board. There are many bus companies and each one has different arrival and departure points in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, so do your research to determine which company offers stops that work best with your travel plans.

The high-speed train that runs between Hong Kong and Guangzhou takes just 50 minutes, but only leaves from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station and arrives in Guangzhou South Station. Tickets typically cost anywhere between $11 and $30. Unless you're staying near the train station, you should anticipate at least another hour of travel via subway or cab to get to the city center in Guangzhou.

Unlike the bus, all immigration procedures will take place in Hong Kong before you board the train. If you are not a Hong Kong ID holder, you’ll need to arrive at least one hour before departure time to account for border formalities. If you have a Hong Kong ID, passing through border control should only take about 20 minutes.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

If you need the flexibility of leaving on your own schedule, you can rent a car and drive, but driving in China can be unpredictable and difficult if you are inexperienced. The drive typically takes about 2 hours but could take longer depending on traffic conditions and delays at the border. Note that in Hong Kong, you'll drive on the left side of the road and when you cross into mainland China, you'll drive on the right. If you really need to take a car, consider hiring a car service or taxi to take you across the border instead. Overall, this is a better deal because you can pay just one price instead of having to worry about the cost of the rental car, tolls, gas, and parking. A driver can also help guide you through the border crossing smoothly.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Guangzhou?

The weather in the southern region of China is subtropical, which means summers are hot and humid and winters can be a bit cold, but it very rarely snows. Spring is the rainiest season, particularly in May and June, which makes the fall the best time to visit Guangzhou. Temperatures are mild and it's a great time to be outdoors and enjoy the fall foliage .

Casual travelers should avoid visiting Guangzhou during the Canton Fair , an international trade event in April and May that brings thousands of sellers and buyers to Guangzhou to do business. Hotels are packed at this time and hotel rates and airfares tend to shoot up in price.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Guangzhou?

You need a Chinese visa to visit Guangzhou, but you don't need one to enter Hong Kong, which is technically one of China's Special Administrative Regions. Remember, Hong Kong and China have a formal border, including passport control and customs checks. Luckily, since the city is a major business hub and tourism area, Hong Kong's visa application and requirements are relaxed. In fact, citizens of the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand don’t need a visa to enter Hong Kong for stays of up to 90 days.

Meanwhile, you do need to get a visa to enter mainland China. Make sure to check with the Chinese embassy or the nearest consulate to confirm you have all the necessary documents to apply for a tourist visa, which will stay valid for 10 years. You can also buy a Chinese visa while you're in Hong Kong , but it's smarter to apply for a visa before you leave home.

What Is There to Do in Guangzhou?

Guangzhou is a major commerce hub that attracts business travelers from all over the world. With a population of more than 11 million people, this is one of the largest cities in China and there is a lot for tourists to see.

Architecture-lovers should pay pilgrimage to the Guangzhou Opera House designed by Zaha Hadid and the Canton Tower, which holds the Guinness World Record for having the highest thrill ride in the world. Although the Sky Drop is over 1,500 feet in the air, the ride only drops you about 100 feet. While in Guangzhou, you should take the opportunity to go out for Dim Sum , which is a part of traditional Cantonese cuisine, or take a night cruise on the Pearl River to see the city lit up at night. For something unique, you may also consider visiting the historic Shamian Island , where you'll find remnants of the city's colonial past .

Tickets for the high-speed train cost between HK $8 and HK $233 (about $11 to $30).

There are buses to Guangzhou that depart from Hong Kong Airport. If you'd rather take a car, several car hire services take passengers from the airport across the border to Guangzhou.

The two cities are 111 miles (179 kilometers) apart.
