20 My Perfect Stranger

Released in 2023, my perfect stranger (2023).

  • Available to stream on KOCOWA

When the two cross paths, they find that maybe their time traveling, and their lives, are actually linked to one another.

While most Korean dramas involving time traveling only see one character do the actual time traveling, My Perfect Stranger takes a risk in making both of its main characters time travelers . One does so on purpose though, while the other does not, which is where much of the intrigue comes from.

Hae Jun (Kim Dong Wook) is a journalist investigating a serial murder case who discovers a time machine and uses it to follow his own investigation. Yoon Young (Jin Ki Joo) discovers her mother dead and is then struck by a car, waking up in the same time that Hae Jun traveled to. As is true for many time travelers, they become trapped instead of able to travel between times. When the two cross paths, they find that maybe their time traveling, and their lives, are actually linked to one another.

Released In 2017

Tunnel (2017).

  • Available to stream on Roku

Instead of traveling to the past, Tunnel is a time travel K-drama that takes the audience to the future - in a manner of speaking. The present-day of the story is actually 1985 in which a string of murders are being investigated. When the detective (Choi Jin Hyuk) pursuing a lead runs after a suspect through a tunnel, he’s hit in the head and ends up 30 years in the future.

The murder mystery element of the series is inspired by a real string of serial killings in Korea, but the story is very much fictional. While the show presents itself as a murder mystery with a time-travel element, there’s also a romantic subplot and a family at the center of the story that makes it a drama that really shines. Incredibly popular outside of South Korea as well, Tunnel has been adapted for Thai television and an Indonesian remake is in development.

10 Must Watch K-Dramas That Aren’t Romances (& Where To Stream Them)

Want to enjoy some new TV series from Korea but without all the love and sappy sentimentality of some K-dramas? Check out these 10 great options.

18 Familiar Wife

Released in 2018, familiar wife (2018).

A married man (Ji-Sung) with two kids is unhappy in his life. He’s depressed, hates his wife, and is unsatisfied at work. If he had only made different choices in his youth, he might have had a happier life. After traveling through a toll booth and losing control of his car, he winds up in the past and is able to change some of those decisions.

This is one time travel series that doesn't confine the protagonist to one time. Able to travel back and forth between the past and the present, he’s able to see how his different decisions have big outcomes later in life. It’s a similar concept to something like Sliding Doors but with many small changes to help someone understand their path in life. The music truly helps set the stage in the series as well with the soundtrack being nominated at the Korea Drama Awards.

Released In 2021

Times (2021).

  • Available to stream on Rakuten Viki

Times isn’t a traditional time travel K-drama in which one character is transported to another time period completely. Instead, the time travel is a result of a phone line that is able to traverse timelines. Several series have used similar ideas, often with the use of radios instead of phones, with varying degrees of success.

Two journalists, one in 2015 and one in 2020, connect over the use of the same phone line. Initially, they work together to prevent the death of one of their fathers, but while investigating, they uncover a conspiracy that involves time travel and corrupt politicians. The series is definitely a unique take among the time travel shows created for Korean television, which usually focus on history and a romantic subplot instead of political intrigue. While the series didn't reach widespread acclaim, star Lee Joo-young was nominated for Best New Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

16 Tomorrow With You

Tomorrow with you (2017).

While Tomorrow With You does use romance like most time travel K-dramas do, it also has a unique idea for the time travel itself. While most Korean time travel shows involve time traveling by accident, the main character in Tomorrow With You can decide to travel in time. It’s also done so while traveling the subway instead of falling through a portal or suffering a life-threatening injury in order to do it.

Yoo So-Joon (Lee Je-Hoon) takes on time-traveling adventures when he discovers that Ma-Rin (Shin Min-A) and he are linked by a tragic accident in the future. Intrigued by her, he decides to save both her and himself. He believes that he can change their fates thanks to his ability, but he has to figure out just how they are connected. He resolves to marry her in order to make sure, and they become truly linked as he falls in love.

15 The Best Hit

The best hit (2017).

In The Best Hit, 1993 K-pop idol Yoo Hyun-Jae (Yoon Shi-yoon) gets accidentally transported to 2017, discovers that he is presumed dead after he disappeared in 1994, and investigates why he traveled through time. He does all this while struggling with living in the future, of course. Meanwhile, Hyun-Jae's biological son, Lee Ji-Hoon (Kim Min-jae), is secretly training to become an idol himself and is even enrolled in Star Punch Entertainment's program - while making his parents believe that he's studying for the civil service exams.

Also known as Hit the Top , and Best Punch , The Best Hit is an underrated gem in the world of the best time travel K-dramas. It's also an interesting way for the audience to get a look at what it takes to become a pop idol. Some of the stars of the series are also popular musicians. Kim Min-jae, for example, is also a rap artist and was nominated for the Best New Actor award at the Seoul Awards following the debut of the show.

14 Sisyphus: The Myth

Sisyphus: the myth (2021).

  • Available to stream on Netflix

The storyline introduces a character who travels from the future to his current time.

This 2021 Netflix K-drama has some serious Terminator vibes to it, but it's full of good laughs, color, and drama. Han Tae-Sul (Cho Seung-woo) is a talented engineer who is determined to uncover the real reason behind his older brother's murder. If that wasn't enough, the storyline introduces a character who travels from the future to his current time. In the future, the world is dominated by gangs and military cliques. Survival entails having serious combat skills, and Gang Seo-Hae (Park Shin-Hye) is just the right warrior.

She travels back in time to help Tae-Sul on his dangerous journey after learning key evidence about his brother's death. What's interesting is that the series doesn't focus solely on the one-way time travel trip, but insists that the two main characters are responsible for breaking a time loop. Some critics disliked that Sisyphus: The Myth breaks its own established rules about time traveling, but it certainly keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

13 Splash Splash Love

Released in 2015, splash splash love (2015).

Splash Splash Love is one of those K-dramas that combine time travel with romance . In the television series, a high-school student gets transported to 15th-century Korea. She soon meets the young king of the kingdom who wants to learn more about mathematics. Thankfully, the heroine of the show is a patient teacher who is more than willing to tutor the King.

Splash Splash Love is a quick and easy watch as it is one of the shortest K-dramas out there, with only two episodes. This is part of why the show has near-perfect pacing and ranks among the best time travel K-dramas. It was originally broadcast as a 10-part webseries on Naver TV Cast. Its popularity led to it being edited into two hour-long episodes, so binging it is really like watching a movie.

12 Rooftop Prince

Released in 2012, rooftop prince (2012).

Rooftop Prince has a lot of storylines to process, but they're well worth it. The titular protagonist is a prince who wakes up in present-day 2012, even though he's actually from the Korean Joseon dynasty/era . The crown prince and his two confidants find themselves on the rooftop of Park-ha's (Han Ji-min) home. After the prince realizes he's time-traveled 300 years into the future, he also sees the long-lost sister of Park-ha - who is the spitting image of his late wife who drowned.

The prince is convinced he will find the answers to his past in 2012 and poses as the grandson of a powerful CEO, who in reality was killed by another family member. Both the characters of the past and the characters of the present have intense backstories and the series leans into the soap-opera-like aspects of those. It works in the show's favor, as the series has become even more popular outside of Korea than in its home. It is most popular in Japan and China.

K-dramas like Love & Leashes are full of passion and romance, but what are some other similarly hot and steamy K-drama series?

11 The King: Eternal Monarch

Released in 2020, the king: eternal monarch (2020).

Not only does The King: Eternal Monarch have a phenomenal female lead in Jeong Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun), but it's also full of riveting action, features a unique story of parallel worlds, and is also one of the unique time travel K-Dramas available on Netflix. In the show, there are two co-existing realities: present-day South Korea and the Kingdom of Corea.

10 Queen In-Hyun's Man

Queen in-hyun's man (2012).

A Joseon Dynasty scholar meets an aspiring actress in the year 2012 in the political and romantic Korean drama , Queen In-Hyun's Man, one of the best time travel K-dramas. In 1694, a noble-born scholar is the only survivor after his family was murdered, but there's a bigger story at play while he supports the reinstatement of the deposed queen and there's a conspiracy involving a royal concubine. Due to a magical talisman, he time travels 300 years into the future and meets an actress who he has a connection with.

What makes the rom-com elements of the scholar from the past meeting the actress from the future is that the actress, so far, is not a household name. instead, her big break is about to be playing Queen In-Hyun, the very woman the scholar is a supporter of.

Faith (2012)

The time travel K-drama Faith follows the story of a plastic surgeon who gets transported to 14th-century Goryeo. She soon learns that a royal guard warrior was the reason why she was brought back more than 600 years into the past. The royal guard begs the plastic surgeon to help their injured queen. However, the plastic surgeon has actually caught feelings for her kidnapper.

Faith is considered one of the better time travel and fantasy-themed romance K-dramas thanks to the stellar performances of the actors, as well as the detailed story that shines a light on Korean history and mythology. It's also got a multi-layered title. While the literal translation of the title is "faith" as in "belief in justice," the Hanja lettering (Chinese letters used to write Korean) actually means "divine doctor," allowing the audience to understand that both terms are important to the long-term storyline of the show.

The Smile will definitely Leave Your Eyes with these shocking and heartbreaking K-Drama plot twists.

6 Chicago Typewriter

Chicago typewriter (2017).

  • Currently unavailable to stream

Out of the most compelling and best time travel K-dramas (as well as general fantasy K-Dramas ), Chicago Typewriter is the only one that's about reincarnation rather than strictly about traveling through time. Three resistance fighters from the 1930s Japanese occupation of Korea find themselves in a new time period, but not because of mysterious scientific machines or magical objects. Instead, the three are reincarnated as a writer, a fan, and a ghostwriter.

Switching between the 1930s and the 21st century, these three characters start to see parallels between both time periods. As they start to uncover the truth behind their pasts, they worry about how it might affect their present. K-drama fans tired of the same old romantic comedy fare will love the truly unique story elements of Chicago Typewriter. The series was also filmed on location around Seoul, South Korea, so fans will enjoy picking out the real sites.

Released In 2016

Signal (2016).

  • Available to stream on Paramount+

Signal has a storyline that not many shows have explored, but it works wonders in enthralling its audience. The outstanding police procedural K-drama is also a thriller, as it was inspired by real-life crime stories and a murder case, and the show interweaves two different timelines. The series pulls inspiration from the time travel aspect of the movie Frequency and the real-life Hwaseong serial murders in Korea.

While investigating a case, a cold case profiler discovers a walkie-talkie from the year 1989. He deduces that the walkie-talkie transcends time and allows him to communicate with a detective from 1989 for a short period of time. Together, they use their knowledge to stop heinous crimes from ever occurring — a unique concept that cements Signal 's status among the best time travel K-dramas.

4 Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

Moon lovers: scarlet heart ryeo (2016).

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is inarguably one of the most talked-about time travel K-dramas (as well as being a remake) . It has everything from time travel and romance to drama and political intrigue, not to mention some of the most heart-wrenching scenes.

Be wary of total solar eclipses, as that is what is responsible for a 25-year-old woman (IU) living in the 21st century being transported back to the Goryeo Dynasty. Waking up in a new identity, she is among the royal princes of the Wang family. While she initially finds herself falling for a kind-hearted prince, she is soon pulled in by the brooding and dark fourth prince, and the dynasty's political bickering. She ends up right in the middle of the power struggle of the different princes.

K-dramas are full of strong female lead characters who go against tropes and fight for justice. These are the best times they were total bosses.

3 Life on Mars

Life on mars (2018).

It's evident that among the best time travel K-dramas, the use of time anomalies is a common trope for crime stories, but the detective drama Life on Mars stands out for being truly unpredictable. Adapted from a British drama, Life on Mars follows the cop Han Tae-Joo (Jung Kyoung-Ho), who is investigating what seems to be an ordinary murder case in 2018 — until he wakes up in 1987. In order to get back to 2018, he needs to solve a murder in 1987 first.

Life on Mars ' premise is simple enough, but its hilarious script, fast-paced mysteries, and astounding reveals make it a well-rounded series that's equally enjoyable for both first-time and long-time K-drama viewers. The series also won for Best Adaptation Of An Existing Format at the Asian Academy Creative Awards in 2018.

2 Live Up To Your Name

Live up to your name (2017).

True to its title, Live Up To Your Name leverages its romance and fantasy elements.

Some of the best K-dramas don't really offer anything new to the genre - but instead build on traditional tropes to arrive at a truly compelling, inspiring, and relatable story. This is the case with Live Up To Your Name , in which the greatest male acupuncturist of the Joseon era travels 400 years into the future , striking a tense and sometimes clashing romance with a brilliant and gorgeous female doctor from 2017. True to its title, Live Up To Your Name leverages its romance and fantasy elements to craft the ultimate comedic time travel medical K-drama about destiny.

While the series wasn't a major award-winner, it did manage a surprising feat. The series finale more than doubled the viewership of the series premiere in South Korea (according to Nielsen). Interest in the series actually increased and ratings went up instead of leveling out as the series aired. While that's the opposite of what happens for most series broadcast on television, it's even more impressive because the show aired on a cable network rather than a free broadcast network.

1 Mr. Queen

Mr. queen (2020).

Inspired by the Chinese web series Go Princess Go , Mr. Queen , features a hotshot male chef who finds himself transported to the Joseon era — not as himself, but in the body of the Queen Cheorin (Shin Hye-sun) — inadvertently unraveling the mystery behind the queen's supposed attempt at taking her own life. While trying to conform to the Joseon era as a woman, he gets caught in the political turmoil of the kingdom, and the king isn't the goofy and undermined ruler everyone assumes. He's cunning, mysterious, and seeking the truth behind those who wish to dethrone him.

The series remains one of the highest-rated dramas in Korean cable television history. Shin Hye-sun's performance as Queen Cheorin is largely why Mr. Queen is regarded by many as the best time travel K-dramas of all time.

Time traveling is a popular plot device that has been used across various genres, from science fiction to romance, in movies and TV shows like Back to the Future , Looper , and Outlander . This intriguing concept has also become a popular theme in Korean dramas. As K-dramas continue to captivate audiences worldwide, viewers are diving into the rich archives of past productions — unearthing hidden time-traveling K-drama gems that showcase a refreshing take on a popular trope .

Many historical dramas explore this concept in depth, oftentimes bringing a modern character to a more conservative past. These are also, more often than not, romance stories with a bit of mystery involved. Many times, time-traveling K-dramas incorporate a lot of humor and comedy, as one character (or multiple) exists in a timeline that they don't belong in. They don't know the ins and the outs, and that sets up for comedic scenarios. From the romantic fantasy of Splash Splash Love to the mystifying plot of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo , each K-drama brings a different perspective to time traveling as a concept.

10 'The Great Doctor' (2012)

Created by kim young-hyun and park sang-yeon.

The Great Doctor takes place during the Goryeo Dynasty. An attack is launched on King Gongmin ( Ryu Deok-hwan ) and Queen Noguk ( Park Se-young ) one night, and it’s up to Captain Choi Young ( Lee Min Ho ) and his guards to protect them both. However, Queen Noguk is gravely injured, and no doctor in the Goryeo Dynasty is capable of saving her. The King then commands his guards to go find the doctor from the Kingdom of Heaven. When a portal opens up, it turns out that the Kingdom of Heaven is actually the modern era of Korea. Choi Young then finds a plastic surgeon – Eun Soo ( Kim Hee-Sun ) – and brings her back to his era, where she is trapped serving King Gongmin with no way to return home.

A must-see medical K-drama , The Great Doctor has a slow start, but it builds up quickly as the show progresses . A romance, forbidden by time itself, ignites between Choi Young and Eun-Soo , and viewers will be rooting for them and praying for a happy ending. The show also includes fantastical elements, such as extraordinary powers and magic.

9 'Tomorrow With You' (2017)

Created by heo sung-hye.

Yoo So-Joon ( Lee Je-Hoon ) is a CEO who has time-traveling abilities. Any time he uses the subway, he can travel into the future. Meanwhile, Ma-Rin ( Shin Min-A ) is a photographer trying to make ends meet after an unsuccessful career in the entertainment industry. Unbeknownst to her, So-Joon discovers when Ma-Rin is about to get into an accident, so he tries to save her, though he comes off weird and awkward. However, intentions aside, their fates become intertwined.

The concept of Tomorrow With You is interesting, and it’s rarely explored in time-traveling K-dramas. Usually, characters time travel unintentionally by supernatural means. But in So-Joon’s case, he decides when he wants to time travel . The romance will definitely grow on the viewers as they grow invested in the connection between Ma-Rin and So-Joon.

8 'Queen and I' (2012)

Created by song jae-jung.

Queen and I joins the ranks of Love in the Moonlight as an excellent historical K-drama due to its enthralling story. It follows two protagonists, Kim Boong-Do ( Ji Hyun-Woo ) and Choi Hee-Jin ( Yoo In-Na ), in their respective timelines. Hee-Jin is an actress in modern-day Korea, while Boong-Do is a scholar from the Joseon Dynasty. After almost being assassinated, Boong-Do ends up in present-day Korea on Hee-Jin’s film set. He soon learns that he is able to teleport back and forth in time, and the more time he spends with Hee-Jin, the more he falls in love with her, as she does with him.

Many time-traveling K-dramas focus on a prince and a lowly maiden — however, in rare cases like Queen and I and The Great Doctor , the cast consists of lower-ranking characters , like a scholar. There are plenty of comedic moments in the K-drama that make it worth watching, and viewers who love romantic comedies, heartfelt stories, and time-traveling will love this drama.

7 'Familiar Wife' (2018)

Created by yang hee-seung.

Cha Joo-Hyuk ( Ji-Sung ) is a married man with two kids of his own. The problem is, he loathes his wife, and he has a negative outlook on life. Life at home is not perfect, and neither is his work life. He lives a somewhat miserable life, from his perspective. Life for Joo-Hyuk changes, however, after he visits a toll booth and puts 1000 won in it. He loses control of his car as it drives on his own, and he wakes up in the past, back before he got married. He shortly learns after traveling back and forth in time that he can change it if he so desires. And that is what he does — he alters his path by making deliberate choices to end up where he wants to be and wakes up in the present time with a new wife, Hye-Won ( Kang Han-na ).

Familiar Wife is a K-drama that is heartfelt, focusing on the idea that if one could change their life willingly, would they ? Most time-traveling K-dramas start off with a funny introduction, where characters are confused or startled by the sudden change in atmosphere and era. However, Familiar Wife starts off rather dark, making the viewer feel uncomfortable or miserable due to the realism incorporated. But such is necessary in order to provide a meaningful K-drama, which is what Familiar Wife grows to be.

6 'Splash Splash Love' (2015)

Created by kim ji-hyun and song jae-jung.

Jang Dan-Bi ( Kim Seul-Gi ) is a high schooler preparing to take entrance exams, which will ultimately decide the fate of her future. The problem is, she is bad at math, and she doesn’t know what she wants for her future. When the day comes, Dan-Bi becomes too overwhelmed and runs off. She sits on a bench all by herself, praying for a different life, when suddenly she hears drums coming from a rain puddle. She examines it and falls in, finding herself in the Joseon period. There, she is hired by the King to train him in mathematics, among other things.

Splash Splash Love is a very fun show that has all the defining characteristics of K-drama , which means it's focused on the characters. Taking place in the Joseon period, the main characters of Splash Splash Love , Dan-Bi and Prince Lee Do (Yoon Doo-Joon), are a fun pair that play off each other very well! Viewers will appreciate the common tropes: a woman disguises herself as a man, the prince falls for the maiden, a jealous queen , and a quiet bodyguard. It’s short and sweet, and any fan of K-dramas will love this one.

5 'Rooftop Prince' (2012)

Created by lee hee-myung.

Crown Prince Lee Gak ( Park Yoochun ), from the Joseon era, wakes up in the middle of the night as he finds his wife, the Crown Princess ( Jeong Yu-Mi ), dead in the lake. Many assume that she tripped and fell into the pond, but Lee Gak knows – with the help of three special advisors – that she was murdered. While an investigation is underway, Rooftop Prince cuts to the present time, following Park-Ha ( Han Ji-Min ) as she travels back to Korea to meet with her blood father with whom she lost connection after her stepsister abandoned her and ignored her pleas for help. Then four Joseon men are then transported to the present time after being chased by masked assassins and jumping off a cliff. From there, Lee Gak and his crew learn to live in the modern world while trying to go back to the Joseon period.

Rooftop Prince is full of K-drama tropes that fans know and love. It deals with amnesia–attained by Park-Ha after an accident, and she finds herself unable to answer why she was separated from her family. Rooftop Prince also deals with evil, second-female leads, goofy scenarios, and gimmicky love triangles. It’s also a unique drama where characters jump to the present time as opposed to past eras , which is always refreshing to watch in a time-traveling K-drama. Anyone looking for mystery in their time-traveling K-dramas will enjoy this classic.

4 'The King: Eternal Monarch' (2020)

Created by kim eun-sook.

In modern-day Korea, there exist two parallel universes. One universe follows the everyday life of modern-day Seoul, where there are prime ministers and presidents. However, in the other universe, Korea is still run by a monarchy, though it exists under present-day advancements. One day, in an alternate reality of Korea, a young prince by the name of Lee Gon ( Lee Min-Ho ) watches his father be murdered by an Uncle, and he is next until a mysterious stranger saves him. Meanwhile, in present-day Korea, a detective by the name of Tae-Eul ( Kim Go-Eun ) investigates that same man – Lee Gon’s uncle – who shows up covered in blood. Years go by for Lee Gon, and he grows into a King who searches for the person who saved him. He travels to the parallel universe of present-day Korea through a portal, and he meets his savior, Tae-Eul.

Initially, the Netflix K-drama The King: Eternal Monarch might be a little confusing. It deals a lot with parallel universes, and the information can be overwhelming and confusing at first , considering this is one of the first times – if not the only time – that a K-drama explores a universe where modern-day Korea is still ruled under a monarchy. But the slow build-up is well worth the wait, as a romance is ignited between the two leads. It’s a K-drama with a unique twist that viewers will enjoy and appreciate.

3 'Tunnel' (2017)

Created by lee eun-mi and choi jin-hee.

Unlike most time-traveling K-dramas that focus on historical eras, Tunnel i s a K-drama that takes place in a fairly recent time period. Detective Gwang-Ho ( Choi Jin Hyuk ) is investigating a string of murders in 1985 involving young women, and upon chasing the suspect through a tunnel, Gwang-Ho loses sight of the perpetrator. He is then knocked out by getting hit in the head. Gwang-Ho then wakes up and discovers soon after that he is no longer in 1985, but rather, thirty years in the future.

Tunnel is a thriller K-Drama that differs from a lot of time-traveling shows. The romance is a subplot to the main plot and doesn’t exist for the most part. Rather, Tunnel focuses on familial love . The murder plot is an exciting bonus that will keep viewers and fans on their feet as they try to determine who the serial killer is and how Gwang-Ho will return to the time he belongs in.

2 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' (2016)

Created by tong hua.

Make-up artist Ha-Jin ( IU ) has just broken up with her boyfriend after catching him cheating on her with her best friend. Stuck in a slump, Ha-Jin sits out on a pier, drinking, when she sees a child drowning. She jumps in to save the child, and just as she swims to the surface after doing so, she is mysteriously pulled back down into the water. She then awakes in a hot water spring where several men are bathing. To her surprise, she finds out that she is in the Goryeo Dynasty, and the men she met were the Princes. She also eventually learns that she is no longer Ha-Jin but a woman named Hae-Soo who knows the princes well. With no way back home, Hae-Soo has to learn how to live in the Goryeo Dynasty and stay alive.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is another fun K-drama that plays around with the concept of body-switching as opposed to teleporting into a different era . It includes several male leads that the viewer will fall in love with and several love triangles that viewers will love. Not to mention, the show has its dramatic moments that will have viewers on the verge of tears. Buy on Amazon

1 'Mr. Queen' (2020)

Created by park kye-ok.

Jang Bong-Hwan ( Choi Jin Hyuk ) is one of the youngest chefs at Blue House, with a dream to become the first chef who “feeds the strongest.” He has a perfectionist, self-centered nature, and because of his insanely high ego, he mishandles a meal prepared specially for the Chinese Ambassador. This results in Bong-Hwan being chased by Seoul police, and he falls head-first into a pool of water. Upon waking, he learns that he is no longer Bong-Hwan, but rather Princess Kim So-Yong of the Joseon period.

Not only is Mr. Queen a classic time travel K-drama that many viewers will fall in love with, but it also includes the infamous body-switching trope seen in many classics, such as Secret Garden . This K-drama is filled with mystery as viewers are left to uncover the secret behind the attempted murder of So-Yong and the controversies behind her character. Mr. Queen is a worthwhile watch filled with lots of humor, provided excellently by the narration of Choi Jin Hyuk.

Marry My Husband is based on the web novel of the same name written by Sung So-jak, and much like the source material, the series does a fantastic job at setting up the intrigue and tone by making us root for the protagonist.

Starring Park Min-young in an unabashedly endearing role, the series puts a more poignant spin on time travel tropes. Watching the protagonist moving past manipulation for genuine love and self-realized narrative has audiences eagerly waiting for another episode.

5 K-Dramas That Will Transport You Back In Time

Time travel is a common trope deployed in dramas, especially in K-dramas. It often adds a certain level of intrigue or fun to the story. These five time travel K-dramas offer a fresh and unique take on the time travel trope. Whether you are looking for something mind-bending, funny, or romantic, you will find one for every mood!

“ 365: Repeat the year ”

travel back in time k drama

A group of 10 people receives an opportunity to travel back one year into the past to reset their lives. Among the resetters are Ji Hyung Ju ( Lee Joon Hyuk ), a detective who wants to go back in time to stop the death of one of his close colleagues, and Shin Ga Hyun ( Nam Ji Hyun ), a webtoon artist who lost the ability to walk due to an accident. When the resetters start dying one by one, Hyung Ju and Ga Hyun team up to uncover the mystery behind the resets.

There’s never a dull moment in this drama. It’s a fast-paced and expertly-crafted suspenseful whodunit story that will keep you guessing until the very last minute. Things and people are never what they seem. There isn’t a strong focus on romantic relationships but the chemistry and teamwork between Hyung Ju and Ga Hyun will leave you wanting more.

If you enjoy a good twisty thriller story, “ 365: Repeat The Year ” is the perfect drama for you!

“ Kairos ”

Kim Seo Jin ( Shin Sung Rok ) is a successful and ambitious man whose perfect life falls apart when his daughter is kidnapped. During his desperate search for her, he comes into contact with Han Ae Ri ( Lee Se Young ), who lives one month in the past. Ae Ri’s mother suddenly goes missing one day, hence the two decide to team up to help each other despite living in two different times. Their only form of communication is through a one minute phone call each day.

This is another time travel thriller, but who doesn’t appreciate a well-written intriguing mystery? “ Kairos ” does a splendid job in handling the time travel theme and developing its complex and gripping storyline. A drama involving a non-linear timeline can confuse the audience but the drama manages to be coherent and logical.

Coupled with exceptional acting by the cast as well as excellent plot and character development, you are in for an exciting ride with “Kairos”!

“ Go Back Couple ”

travel back in time k drama

After almost 20 years of marriage, Choi Ban Do ( Son Ho Jun ) and Ma Jin Joo ( Jang Nara ) realize that they don’t love each other anymore. However, on the day of their divorce, both of them travel back in time to when they first met in university. While they vow to not get involved with each other to avoid making the same choices as they did before, they soon discover it’s not as easy as they think.

Not your usual mind-bending time travel drama, “ Go Back Couple ” is a tightly-written story that explores what happens after your usual happily ever after when the realities of life set in. The drama is reflective and heartfelt, focusing on second chances, the regrets, and what-ifs. Besides the main love line, Jin Joo’s relationship with her mother will also tug at your heartstrings.

As the emotional anchor, Jang Nara and Son Ho Jun are amazing in their roles. For the audience to still root for them to be together when the second lead syndrome is so strong, it says a lot about their chemistry. Still, the handsome and adorably smitten Jung Nam Gil, played by Jang Ki Yong , will make you squee at every interaction he shares with Jin Joo.

Overall, the drama does a great job in balancing the poignant and funny moments. It will make you laugh and cry and also reflect on your own relationships.

“ Mr. Queen ”

travel back in time k drama

The drama opens in modern time and follows Jang Bong Hwan ( Choi Jin Hyuk ), an arrogant and ill-mannered chef who works at the Blue House. He finds himself one day in the body of a young Joseon lady, Kim Soyong ( Shin Hye Sun ), who is due to marry King Cheoljong ( Kim Jung Hyun ). As Bong Hwan struggles to adapt to life as the Queen, he realizes that there’s more to King Cheoljong than meets the eye and becomes unwittingly embroiled in the political struggle.

At its core, “ Mr. Queen ” is a historical comedy. Even though the storyline gets more serious as it progresses, the drama still retains its humor and does not take itself too seriously. The drama is also full of interesting and hilarious supporting characters. From Soyong’s growing bond with her court maid and lady, to the court lady’s relationship with the royal chef, the side plots are just as entertaining to watch.

Shin Hye Sun shines in her portrayal of a modern man trapped in a woman’s body. Playing two vastly different characters, she fully embodies Bong Hwan’s and Soyong’s mannerisms and characteristics. The actress has great comedic timing and is also equally amazing in dramatic scenes. The drama is worth watching just for her phenomenal and star-turning performance alone!

Catch the first episode of “Mr. Queen”:

“ Signal ”

travel back in time k drama

When it comes to time travel, “ Signal ” is the first drama that comes to mind. It is a beloved classic for good reason! The drama is filled with a compelling and gripping plot, top-notch acting, heartfelt relationships, and excellent character development.

“Signal” follows rookie profiler, Park Hae Young ( Lee Je Hoon ), who has accidentally found an old walkie-talkie. Through the walkie-talkie, he is able to communicate with a detective from the past, Lee Jae Han ( Jo Jin Woong ). Along with Cha Soo Hyun ( Kim Hye Soo ), who was a rookie during Jae Han’s time and is now a veteran detective, Hae Young and Jae Han set out to solve cold cases through their walkie-talkie transmission.

You will be blown away by the impressive development of the plot and also the magnificent performances by the cast. Jo Jin Woong’s nuanced portrayal of the idealistic Lee Jae Han and his earnest and dogged pursuit of justice will break your heart.

It might seem like another crime solving time travel mystery on paper, but “Signal” is packed with a lot of heart and will leave you reeling long after you finish the drama. At times gut wrenching and at times frustrating, be prepared for a roller-coaster of emotions when you watch it!

Moon lovers is my ultimate drama. Until now no other can't beat it.

Rooftop prince and Hit the top were so funny. Yoon si Yoon is one of my best actors.

In the list, I will put Kairos. Even if it still aired, this drama is on another level! Can't wait for the nexts episodes ^^

Marizzza

Faith is also great drama and I was hoping to see it on the list. But I'm guessing they didn't put it because there is already another drama starring Lee Minho listed above.

K-Selection

10 of the Best K-Dramas About Time Travel

November 6, 2023, 2:58 pm 1 How

In K-dramas, the past often involves the Joseon era. In some cases, they get creative by using time travel to solve multiple cases. In others, time travel serves as the narrative catalyst for an epic love story between lovers separated by centuries.

Whether it's primarily romantic, detective, or historical K-dramas, there are dozens that skillfully use time travel to continue telling compelling stories, some of the most unique on the small screen.

  • My Perfect Stranger (2023)

My Perfect Stranger

While most Korean Kdramas involving time travel only see one character traveling through time, "My Perfect Stranger" takes a risk by making its two main characters time travelers. One does it deliberately, while the other does not.

Hae Jun (Kim Dong Wook) is a journalist investigating a case when he discovers a time machine and uses it to follow his own investigation. Yoon Young (Jin Ki Joo) discovers that his mother is dead, waking up in the same time period Hae Jun traveled to. When the two cross paths, they discover that perhaps their time travels and lives are actually connected to each other.

Tunnels (2017)

10 of the Best K-Dramas About Time Travel K-Selection

Instead of traveling to the past, "Tunnel" is a time travel K-drama that takes the audience to the future in a way. The current time in the story is actually the year 1985, during which a series of murders are being investigated. When the detective (Choi Jin Hyuk) chases a man through a tunnel, he is hit in the head and finds himself 30 years in the future.

Although the series presents itself as a mystery with a time travel element, there is also a romantic intrigue at the center of the story that makes it a truly remarkable Kdrama.

Familiar Wife (2018)

10 of the Best K-Dramas About Time Travel K-Selection

A married man (Ji-Sung) with two children is unhappy in his life. He is depressed, hates his wife and is unhappy with his job. If he had made different choices in his youth, he might have had a happier life. After driving through a toll booth and losing control of his car, he finds himself back in the past and can change some of those decisions.

By traveling backward and forward between the past and present, he can see how his different decisions have big consequences later in his life. It's a similar concept to something like "Sliding Doors", but with many small changes to help someone understand their path in life.

Times (2021)

10 Underrated K-Dramas on Netflix to Add to Your Watching List

“Times” is not a traditional time travel K-drama in which a character is transported to a completely different era. Instead, time travel results from a telephone line capable of crossing different eras. Two journalists, one in 2015 and the other in 2020, connect using the same telephone line.

Initially, they work together to prevent the death of one of their fathers, but upon investigating, they uncover a conspiracy involving time travel and corrupt politicians. This series definitely offers a unique approach among time travel K-dramas made for Korean television, which generally tend to focus on the story and include a romantic plot.

Tomorrow With You (2017)

Tomorrow With You

Although "Tomorrow With You" uses romance like most time travel K-dramas, it also offers a unique idea for time travel itself. While most time travel Kdramas involve accidental trips, the main character in "Tomorrow With You" can decide to travel back in time.

Yoo So-Joon (Lee Je-Hoon) embarks on time travel adventures when he discovers that Ma-Rin (Shin Min-A) is about to have a tragic accident. Intrigued by her, he tries to save her, and they become bonded.

The Best Hit (2017)

10 of the Best K-Dramas About Time Travel K-Selection

In “The Best Hit,” Yoo Hyun-Jae (Yoon Shi-yoon), a K-pop idol in 1993, finds himself accidentally transported to 2017. He discovers how he is presumed dead after disappearing in 1994 and investigates the reasons for his time travel while struggling to adapt to life in the future.

Meanwhile, Hyun-Jae's biological son, Lee Ji-Hoon (Kim Min-jae), is secretly training to become an idol himself and is even enrolled in Star Punch Entertainment's program, all while making believe his parents that he is studying for the civil service exams. Also known as “Hit the Top,” “The Best Hit” is a little-known gem in the world of best time travel K-dramas.

Sisyphus: The Myth (2021)

Sisyphus myth drama netflix

This 2021 Netflix K-drama has serious similarities to Terminator, but it's filled with laughter, color, and suspense. Han Tae-Sul (Cho Seung-woo) is a talented engineer determined to discover the real reason behind his older brother's death. If that wasn't enough, the plot introduces a character traveling from the future to his current time.

In the future, the world is dominated by gangs and military cliques. Survival requires serious fighting skills. Gang Seo-Hae (Park Shin-Hye) travels back in time to help Tae-Sul on his journey after discovering vital evidence regarding his brother.

Splash Splash Love (2015)

10 of the Best K-Dramas About Time Travel K-Selection

“Splash Splash Love” is one of those K-dramas that mixes time travel and romance. In the television series, a high school girl is transported to 15th century Korea. She soon meets the young king of the kingdom who wants to learn more about mathematics. Fortunately, the heroine of the series is a patient teacher, ready to help the king.

“Splash Splash Love” is a quick and easy watch, as it is one of the shortest K-dramas, with only 2 episodes. This is partly why the series has near-perfect pacing and is among the best time travel K-dramas.

Rooftop Prince (2012)

rooftopprince

“Rooftop Prince” has a lot of plotlines to deal with, but they are worth it. The eponymous protagonist is a prince who wakes up in the present day of 2012, although he actually comes from the Korean Joseon dynasty/era. The crown prince and his two followers meet on the roof of Park-ha's (Han Ji-min) house.

After the prince realizes he has time traveled 300 years into the future, he also discovers Park-ha's long-lost sister, who is the spitting image of his wife whom he lost to drowning. He is convinced he will find answers to his past in 2012 and poses as the grandson of a powerful CEO, who was actually killed by another family member.

Nine: Nine Time Travels (2013)

Nine-Nine Time Travels

In the time travel K-drama "Nine: Nine Time Travels", Park Sun-woo discovers nine incense sticks that can take him back 20 years in time. He uses this trip to the past to save his family.

However, he has to be very careful when going back to the past, as he can only do so nine times – a twist that makes "Nine:Nine" one of the best time travel K-dramas. Park soon discovers that everything he changes in the past resonates and affects his present life.

This K-drama has won many awards in Korea thanks to its excellent cast and romantic story.

7 Netflix K-Dramas to Look Forward to in the Second Half of 2023

Most Anticipated K-Dramas

M aybe it’s the visceral, almost triggering , based-on-a-true-story depiction of school bullies searing a victim’s skin with a curling iron, or maybe it’s how the victim methodically plots her revenge against her assailants years later. Whatever the reason, the 16-episode Korean drama The Glory became a crowd favorite this year, and now ranks as the fifth most popular non-English TV show ever on Netflix , joining the growing list of South Korea’s blockbuster offerings on the platform.

After releasing the first batch of episodes in December last year, The Glory ’s final eight episodes were among the 34 Korean titles that Netflix said it will release this year. It’s the streamer’s biggest line-up of Korean content to date, a testament to the unabated global popularity of South Korean entertainment. And it’s only upward from here: Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos met with South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol in Washington in April and announced that the company will invest $2.5 billion in the country for the next four years , including in the creation of new series, movies, and unscripted shows.

Netflix’s K-dramas have already been off to a great start this year, with a wide variety of genres available. Aside from The Glory ’s heavy drama and social commentary, viewers have also raved over the dystopian world of delivery men in Black Knight , the adorable mother-son duo in slice-of-life drama The Good Bad Mother , and the ever reliable fake-dating trope in romantic comedy Love to Hate You .

But 2023 is far from over, and Netflix still has a bevy of other titles in the pipeline. Below, TIME selects the most anticipated titles, listed in no particular order, all of which will be available to watch on Netflix USA.

The first season of D.P. , released in 2021, brought to light abuse within South Korea’s mandatory military conscription system and the reasons why some are desperate to get out of it. The show’s title refers to a team of soldiers called “deserter pursuit,” who are tasked with tracking down and capturing military deserters. Despite only having six episodes, the first season deeply resonated with former conscripts and even prompted South Korea’s Ministry of Defense to issue a statement that incidents of violence and abuse in the military were on the decline. Director Han Jun-hee is returning for the second season, as well as actors Jung Hae-in and Koo Kyo-hwan, who respectively played An Jun-ho and Han Ho-yeol, the series’ main duo.

A Time Called You

7 K-Dramas That Viewers Regret Watching To The Last Episode In May

travel back in time k drama

Since watching K-dramas can take hours of your time, most will hope that it is at least worth it. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, as several Reddit users stated when asked what K-dramas they regretted watching to the end in May.

Here are 7 of them.

1. My Demon

My Demon told the story of a contract marriage between a heiress (Kim Yoo Jung) and a demon (Song Kang) who has lost his powers.

MV5BYzA1MGY2YWQtNDhmYi00MDEzLWIwYjUtOTExMWUwZTI2OTRiXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjI4NDY5ODM@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_

Some said it had a promising start but lost steam during the final episodes, making it a regrettable watch.

2. Something In The Rain

This series dealt with many taboos surrounding relationships, including dating age gaps as seen in the leads, played by Song Ye Jin and Jung Hae In .

MV5BZmU0NTY3YmUtNzhhMy00Mjg2LWFjMWEtMmI5MDAxNDBlZjZkXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDI3NjU1NzQ@._V1_

The leads “toxic” behaviors and simple misunderstandings made the series unwatchable to some.

3. A Good Day To Be A Dog

A Good Day To Be A Dog  is webtoon adaptation about a woman cursed to turn into a dog anytime she kisses someone. Park Gyu Young  stars as  Han Hae Na , the teacher suffering from the curse, and  ASTRO ‘s  Cha Eunwoo  as  Jin Seo Won , another teacher who is deathly afraid of dogs.

a-good-day-to-be-a-dog

This was another drama that seemed to lead nowhere once the leads got together and solved the biggest issue.

4. Queen Of Tears

The popular  Queen Of Tears stars Kim Ji Won as a third-generation chaebol heiress, and Kim Soo Hyun as the son of farmers. The series follows the first three years of their marriage in crisis.

Watchers didn’t enjoy specific characters, felt it was too unrealistic and the ending was unsatisfactory.

5. Strong Girl Nam Soon

Strong Girl Nam Soon  is the highly anticipated spin-off to the successful 2017 drama  Strong Girl Bong Soon.  Starring  Lee Yoo Mi  as Nam Soon, the cousin of Bong Soon,  Strong Girl Nam Soon  tells the story of another woman blessed with the gift of supernatural strength.

Unfortunately for some, the show fell into cliches and made it a hard watch.

6. Doctor Slump

Park Hyung Sik  and  Park Shin Hye are starred in  Doctor Slump , a slice-of-life romcom about two medical students who have fallen into “slumps” in their careers.

MV5BZWM2YmE4ZGMtMjJhOC00MjRmLTgzMjEtMjc2MDczYTYyMWNiXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTUzMTg2ODkz._V1_

Seeing the two leads, meant to be in their thirties, act like children turned some off, despite their talent.

7. Chicken Nugget

Kim Yoo Jung plays the daughter of a company owner who accidentally turns herself into a chicken nugget, and is based off the webtoon Dak Gang Geong.

MV5BZGU2ZmRiNGYtNzM1ZC00OWI0LWI1ODktZDFmZjFkYzRhZTkxXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjI4NDY5ODM@._V1_

Some felt the “ridiculous” show wasted the talents of the cast and did not translate well into a drama from a webtoon.

Share All sharing options for: The 5 best Korean dramas to watch on Netflix this summer

Korean dramas continue to be some of the most popular (and best!) pop culture in the world. And, now that Netflix is in the K-drama game, the streamer is investing lots of money in producing and distributing some of the most beloved East Asian dramas globally. The age of Peak TV means not only sorting through an immense amount of domestic, English-language TV options, but also a consistent flurry of foreign-language drama, including from Korea.

We’ve worked hard to find a variety of K-dramas to highlight below. While this means a diversity of genre — including a superhero family series, a Squid Game -esque dark comedy, and a teen revenge drama poised to follow in the Netflix tradition of Élite — it also means a diversity of release format. Some of the dramas listed below have already premiered but are releasing new episodes weekly, while others are yet to come but will release all of their episodes in one go. Whether you’re looking for a marathon watch or the weekly release experience of yesteryear, we have something for you…

The Atypical Family

Release date: May 4th-June 9th Episode count: 8 Recommended for fans of: Moving, My Roommate is a Gumiho

Last year, the Hulu K-drama Moving proved that some of the best superhero storytelling is happening outside of the United States. This year, Netflix is getting in on the action, offering up a story about a family of superpowered individuals who are struggling to stay superpowered in a modern world that triggers conditions like depression, insomnia, bulimia, and smartphone addiction.

Jang Ki-yong ( My Roommate is a Gumiho ) stars as single father Bok Gwi-ju, a time traveler. When Gwi-ju begins to experience depression after the loss of his wife, he loses his power to travel through time. Meanwhile, the rest of his family are also struggling to hold onto their superpowers. When the mysterious Do Da-hee ( The 8 Show ’s Chun Woo-hee) enters Gwi-ju’s life, things begin to change in unexpected ways. Note: The Atypical Family has rightly been called out for its fatphobic handling of one character’s journey. If this is a deal breaker for you, then steer clear!

The Atypical Family began airing on May 4th, but is still in the middle of its season, with two episodes dropped on the streamer every weekend. The final episode is set to be released on June 9th.

Release date: May 17th Episode count: 8 Recommended for fans of: Squid Game, Alice in the Borderland, that one episode of Doctor Who

If you’ve caught the trailer or first episode of The 8 Show , you might think it is a complete rip-off of Squid Game . While the new Netflix K-drama has some direct visual echoes of the cultural phenomenon, such as the Escher-style stairs or the numbered uniforms, the series is actually adapted from an existing webtoon story called Money Game . (But you better believe it was the unprecedented success of Squid Game , which remains Netflix’s most-watched show of all time, that got this adaptation greenlit.)

While there may be some similarities between Squid Game and The 8 Show , there are also some fundamental differences. For one, the cast of The 8 Show is much smaller, which makes the interpersonal dynamics much more concentrated. In the series, eight people are invited to appear on a reality variety TV show called Money Game . If the eight people can stand to live in an eight-story concrete fortress for 100 days, they get to split the winnings equally, which starts at 44.8 billion won (or around $33.6 million). To survive in the game, the group can decide to spend money on necessities such as food, water, and electricity—but it comes out of the winnings, and the cost is 1,000 times their normal price.

Another fundamental difference is in the respective tones of the shows. While Squid Game has its moments of comedy, for the most part it is played as a straight drama. From the looks of The 8 Show ’s trailer, the series is much more of a black comedy, with the visual style playing up some of the absurdity of the situation in hyperbolic ways.

Release date: June 7th Episode count: 7 Recommended for fans of: Elite , Gossip Girl, SKY Castle, The Heirs, The Glory

In the grand tradition of Elite — and Gossip Girl before it — comes the next era of rich kid teen drama. Hierarchy is a revenge romance following a group of students at Jooshin High, a Korean private school for the 1%. The series stars Lee Chae-min ( Crash Course in Romance ) as Kang Ha, a mysterious transfer student who doesn’t seem to come from the same uber-privileged background as the rest of the student body... but who may have an agenda of his own. Roh Jeong-eui ( Badland Hunters ) also stars as Jung Jae-yi, the first daughter of a powerful chaebol. Directed by Bae Hyun-jin (also director for my beloved Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow ) and written by Chu Hye-mi ( About Time ), Hierarchy has the makings to be one of the biggest K-drama hits of the summer.

Yoon Kye-sang looks distressed in The Frog

Release date: TBA Episode count: 8 Recommended for fans of: The Bequeathed, The World of the Married

Originally known as Alone in the Woods , The Frog is a dark, psychological drama set in two time periods in the same rural area of South Korea. Kim Yoon-seok ( The Chaser, Another Child ) stars as Jeon Young-ha, a man who is running a motel in the year 2000. Yoon Kye-sang (K-pop boy band g.o.d., Road Number One ) stars as Koo Sang-joon, a man who is running a pension in the same region in 2021. When both men are faced with the same scenario, two decades apart, they make different choices. Sweet Home ’s Go Min-so will also star as Yoo Seong-ha.

The story will unfold over the course of eight episodes, and seems poised to play up the suspense. The World of the Married director Mo Wan II is behind the camera for this one. The World of the Married is one of the most successful cable K-dramas of all time, and also relies on effectively maintaining complex psychological tension across a series run. In other words, this is probably going to be scary in the best ways.

Sweet Home Season 3

A woman in a green hoodie holds up a piece of paper in Sweet Home.

Release date: TBA Episode count: TBA Recommended for fans of: Parasyte: The Grey, Hellbound

When Sweet Home , an adaptation of the webtoon of the same name, was released in December 2020, it became the first K-drama to make it into the Netflix Top Ten. This led to back-to-back filming of Season 2 and 3, and a noticeable increase in budget for this horror about a monster apocalypse and the humans, monsters, and hybrids fighting to survive within it.

Song Kang stars as Cha Hyun-su, a teen orphan who has lost the will to live when the apocalypse breaks out. As he evolves into something new, he finds new purpose in protecting the found family he makes at Green Home Apartments.

Season 2 dropped in December 2023 and was not quite as popular as the first, early pandemic season, but with the ambitious story set to conclude in Season 3, more Song Kang (who is currently away performing mandatory military service), and the return of fan favorite Lee Do-hyun to the action, this conclusion has the opportunity to pull viewers back in. Let’s hope this beloved K-drama sticks the landing!

Lovely Runner: 5 key differences between the webtoon and K-drama

Lovely Runner starring Kim Hye-yoon and Byeon Woo-seok has been receiving attention from viewers for its captivating plotline and the chemistry of the cast members. The show aired its final episode on Tuesday, May 28 on tvN.

Lovely Runner is based on the web novel and webtoon Tomorrow's Best, illustrated by illustrator Doong Doong.

It is written by screenwriter Lee Si-eun known for her work in True Beauty and helmed by directors Kim Tae-yeop and Yoon Jong-ho. Although the show was inspired by Tomorrow's Best, there are major differences between the webtoon and the drama. From characters' backgrounds, location settings, plot twists, and more.

5 differences between the K-drama Lovely Runner and the webtoon Tomorrow's Best

1) the second male lead kim tae-sung.

Tomorrow's Best Webtoon did not have a second lead character. Kim Tae-sung played by Song Geon-hee was introduced through Lovely Runner . Kim Tae-sung was a popular boy in high school who was Im Sol's crush in the first timeline, the two dated each other for two weeks in the second timeline. In the final timeline, Kim Tae-sung was a close friend of Im Sol.

Kim Tae-sung played a pivotal role in the drama as he caught the antagonist Kim Young-soo who died in the last episode. Song Geon-hee also received appreciation from fans and viewers online for portraying Kim Tae-sung's cool and likable personality.

2) Ryu Sun-jae and the band

In the webtoon Tomorrow's Best, the band was named after a Korean dish Gamjajeon meaning Potato Pancake. Originally, Gamjajeon had a line-up of four members without Ryu Sun-jae with a different genre. Ryu Sun-jae joined the band after two years in the webtoon.

Meanwhile, according to the drama Lovely Runner , the band was named Eclipse. The original line-up including Ryu Sun-jae, Baek In-hyuk (Lee Seung-hyub, Hyun-soo (Moon Xion), and Jay (Yang Hyuk) debuted with the song Sudden Shower.

3) Ryu Sun-jae and Im Sol's character & location setting

In the webtoon, Ryu Sun-jae went through rigorous training to become a singer and failed. This is why he joined the band Gamjajeon two years after its official debut. However, in Lovely Runner , Ryu Sun-jae had been a swimmer for 10 years and passionately pursued sports.

He went through an accident which resulted in an injury in his shoulder. Ryu Sun-jae loved swimming, however, had no choice but to quit. He then joined his Baek In-hyuk to pursue a career in music with the band Eclipse . Notably, Jagam High School where Ryu Sun-jae studied was quite far from Im Sol's school where she had to take a bus to travel to his school.

Kim Hye-yoon's character Im Sol in the webtoon became a fan of Ryu Sun-jae following his debut. Her legs were completely fine and could walk. Meanwhile, Im Sol in the drama, had a tragic accident that caused paralysis in both her legs. She had no will to live, however, after hearing Ryu Sun-jae's comforting words on a radio show, she finds a reason to live again. Moreover, in the drama, Jagam High School was right across from Im Sol 's school.

4) Ryu Sun-Jae's Cause of death

According to the storyline of Tomorrow's Best , Ryu Sun-jae had a hard time mentally as he received hate from original fans of Gamjajeon who did not wish for him to join the band as he took over Baek In-hyuk's position as the main vocalist.

In the webtoon, Ryu Sun-jae died due to an overdose of prescribed drugs, including sleeping pills. As Im Sol, traveled back in time she decided to tell him the exact day he would die in the present with the reason behind his death, so he could avoid it.

In Lovely Runner , the reason behind Ryu Sun-jae's death in the first time slip was not revealed. However, similar to the webtoon Ryu Sun-jae received hate from Baek In-hyuk's fans.

5) Time-slip period

What sets the webtoon Tomorrow's Best and Lovely Runner apart is the time slip arc which showcases a major difference. In the webtoon, Ryu Sun-jae passed away at the age of 23, meaning Im Sol traveled back 6 years in time to save him, when they both were in the second year of high school.

On the other hand, in the drama, Im Sol travels back 15 years in time, as Ryu Sun-jae died when he was 34 years old. She had been an avid supporter of Ryu Sun-jae for 13 years.

Lovely Runner is available on TVING for South Korean fans. International viewers may catch the show on Viu and Viki in selected regions.
