Hoag Classic 2023 Purse: Payout and Prize Money Distribution
One of the most popular PGA Tour Champions events featuring some top senior professionals initiated this Friday in California. Here you will find the latest information on prize money and purse breakdown of the ongoing Hoag Classic 2023.
Hoag Classic 2023 Purse:
The Hoag Classic featured by Hoag Health System is a popular PGA Tour Champions event held in Newport Beach Country Club every year. It is a standard senior’s golf event with 3-round based stroke play rules.
The ongoing edition of the event is featuring 78 professional golfers and a $2 million prize pool. As the purse pool amount is similar to last year, very little difference in purse distribution is expected in the 2023 event.
There will be additional perks for players to earn in the California-based senior’s golf event. As the money earned from this one will be counted towards the Charles Schwab Cup point list. However, players won’t be receiving any OWGR points from it.
The winner’s share at Hoag Classic 2023 is set at $300,000. It is a standard 15% share of the complete purse pool. It is the same amount as the previous event champion, Retief Goosen received in 2022.
The runner-up of the event will be rewarded a $176,000 reward. While the 3 rd placeholder will receive $144,000. Moreover, all 78 participants of the event are set to receive a share of the purse pool based on their leaderboard position.
According to an official statement, even the 76 th , 77 th , and 78 th golfers are set to earn $1,160, $1,080, and $1,000 respectively. Which is again the same amount as the 2022 event’s position holders received.

The Hoag Classic is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA TOUR Champions. It hosts the finest field of professional golfers all year, is played at one of the most scenic golf courses and has donated record earnings for charity.
Known as the most philanthropic tournament on the PGA TOUR Champions, this event is highly regarded for its profound history of giving. In 2000, it became the first event to raise $1,000,000 for charity – which went unmatched for four years. We set the standard that has since become the model for every TOUR event.
For 20 years, the tournament has raised over $20,000,000 which directly aided our community in Southern California. Proceeds have benefitted many of Hoag’s institutes including the Hoag Family Cancer Institute, the Sue & Bill Gross Women’s Pavilion, Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute, and Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center. In addition to Hoag, tournament proceeds have also been contributed to more than 50 local charities.
Hoag Classic’s charitable initiatives include support of local military families and charities and support of Hoag Employees trying to continue their education. To learn more about each of these initiates, please continue reading below.
Tournament History
Hoag Hospital began its journey in professional golf in 1975 with the Crosby Southern Pro-Am. Nearly 50 years later, Hoag has accomplished more than anyone could have imagined since that first event at Newport Beach Country Club.
Marshall Duffield
In 1974, Bing Crosby, internationally renowned singer, actor and future World Golf Hall of Fame member, was looking for a place to hold a satellite event for golf professionals who missed the cut at this famous Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament. Marshall Duffield, a friend of Crosby who was a Hoag Hospital 552 Club and Newport Beach (Irvine Coast) Country Club member, enlisted his friend Charley Hester, another 552 Club member, to negotiate a deal for a tournament benefitting Hoag. Crosby put up $10,000 in prize money for the first tournament, and in 1975 the first Crosby Southern Pro-Am was held in Newport Beach.
Over the next 22 years, many future stars of the PGA TOUR visited the tournament – renamed the Newport Classic Pro-Am in 1987, and the Taco Bell Newport Classic from 1993-1997. In that two decade plus span, the total net proceeds raised for Hoag totaled over $2,300,000.
In the spring of 1997, the Senior PGA TOUR (now PGA TOUR Champions) approached Hoag to take over operations of the local TOUR event, and in the fall Hoag began its new venture as host and manager of the Toshiba Senior Classic.
Hank Adler and Jake Rohrer
Although the Toshiba Senior Classic had existed in the community for three years under different management, Hoag was essentially starting a brand new tournament with only five months to prepare. Hank Adler, who had chaired the Taco Bell Newport Classic, and Jake Rohrer, who had chaired several of the previous tournaments, took on new leadership roles as co-chairmen. Hank was instrumental in transitioning Newport Classic sponsors to the Toshiba Senior Classic and soliciting new sponsors, while Jake focused on the crucial task of recruiting and organizing 1,000 volunteers. Newport Beach Country Club continued its important partnership as host club.
The tournament became an instant success, as the partnership of Hoag, Toshiba, Newport Beach Country Club, and the PGA TOUR proved to be a magical formula. The 1998 tournament quickly raised over $700,000 for charity, and two short years later Hoag produced the first PGA TOUR Champions tournament to ever raise $1,000,000 for charity.
Hank Adler, Ira Garbutt, Jeff Purser, Paul Folino, Jake Rohrer
After two successful decades, including crossing the $20 million charitable threshold, Hoag assumed title sponsorship in 2019 and the event became the Hoag Classic.

It’s team time on the PGA Tour, where, after two weeks of the top stars playing against each other in massive events, there is a brief respite for a week to play in a different format for four days in a much more relaxed atmosphere. Not that they aren’t attempting to bring home the hardware at the Zurich Classic, but the last two weeks were spent grinding at a major championship and a signature event.
This week at TPC Louisiana, however, there are some bigger names in the field than usual, with five of the top 15 players in the world in action. They’re all competing for an $8.9 million overall purse and the winners will both take home $1.286 million.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy to receive massive loyalty payouts from PGA Tour after equity investment, per report
The two most popular players on the pga tour will be made whole this week after turning down overtures from liv golf.
The loyalty shown by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and other star golfers to the PGA Tour will be officially rewarded on Wednesday. Woods is set to receive $100 million in equity as part of the newly created for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises with McIlroy obtaining about half as much equity, according to the Telegraph ,
The stakes being awarded to Woods, McIlroy and other PGA Tour stars are part of a make-good by the league to thank players for sticking by its side rather than leave for big-money contracts from LIV Golf (as backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund).
Earlier this year, PGA Tour Enterprises received an investment of up to $3 billion from Strategic Sports Group, a high-profile assortment of billionaire sports owners. While it is unclear how that investment will be spent, this equity distribution will be backstopped by those funds.
Payouts are being handed to players based on a variety of factors, including career success and cultural popularity. Several hundred players will receive stakes, though the majority of that equity -- up to $750 million -- will go to the top 36 players as determined by an undisclosed formula that takes into consideration the aforementioned factors, among others.
While the figures are gaudy, this is not simply a cash payout, as explained by the Telegraph .
After four years, 50 percent of their equity will be vested, with another 25 percent two years later and the remaining amount two years after that. They will also have to fall in line with the rules, which as well as not decamping, involve meeting the minimum requirements for Tour membership and, if not, providing services such as sponsors meets and media appearances.
How this plays out going forward will be interesting. There will reportedly be $100 million in equity handed out annually, which will add up quickly. Even with the $3 billion backing, that's a lot of equity going to current and future players.
Regardless, the intent is clear: The PGA Tour is rewarding players for their loyalty. It is also attempting to align incentives within the organization. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said as much at The Players Championship earlier in this year.
"Historically, our structure has limited our ability to make transformative investments into the sport," he said. "With PGA Tour Enterprises, with our 13-member board of directors now in place and the partnership with Strategic Sports Group, we've changed that dynamic and unleashed our potential for future growth.
"With our player equity program, which is the first in professional sports, our interests and those of our players will be more deeply aligned. Our business thrives when together we're all laser focused on delivering for our fans. If we fail on that front, we fail on every front."
Players will reportedly begin receiving emails with the amount of equity they have been awarded this week. The equity numbers will be based on the $12 billion valuation from earlier this year when the SSG received 25% of PGA Tour Enterprises for its up to $3 billion investment.
