21 Destinations For Cannabis Tourism

best pot tourism

As more and more places around the world legalize the use of marijuana, entrepreneurs in the cannabis community are rolling out painting classes, extravagant tours, cooking demonstrations and a whole host of other marijuana-infused experiences, making some cities must-stops for cannabis enthusiasts. Regardless of your other hobbies, there's a cannabis destination that is a good fit for you.

Monroe, Washington

The state of Washington has many tourist accommodations that allow you to partake in cannabis on-site, but only in Monroe can you stay and smoke in a tree house at Mountain Views Tree House Joint . Monroe also boasts the award-winning dispensary A Greener Today Gold Bar. Taking a trip to Monroe offers a smaller-town feel than Seattle and the area also has skiing and a state park with waterfalls. Tourists should note that it's illegal to consume marijuana in view of the public in Washington, but it is allowed on private property.

Barcelona, Spain

Cannabis clubs are increasingly popular in European cities, especially in Barcelona, where there are over 200 . Tourists are welcome, but there are a few things you should know before stopping by one. It is illegal to purchase , cultivate, possess or use cannabis in a public place in Spain, and if a person is found in possession of cannabis on the street, they can be punished with a fine . It's also important to know that Spain has decriminalized personal use . Most Barcelona cannabis clubs rely on this loophole in the law by charging membership fees then distributing cannabis to their private members, making it "personal cultivation and personal use" of marijuana. Many clubs allow foreigners and tourists to join. Outside of its cannabis clubs, as a city, Barcelona is something to see. Contemporary architecture, open street markets and ancient Roman and medieval treasures are just a few of the things tourists can enjoy.

Bay Area, California

The Bay Area's eccentric vibe and the multitude of dispensaries make it a top cannabis destination. On top of standard dispensary shopping, tourists can go on a tour sipping cannabis-infused wines to experience how San Francisco's wine and marijuana culture come together. Also in the Bay Area is the world's first all-solar powered medical marijuana dispensary . Nestled on a 12-acre "permaculture oasis," Emerald Pharms welcomes curious visitors looking to learn more about the land and what they do. Another popular spot is Haight Street where the city's counterculture was born — locals and tourists alike can enjoy the trendy neighborhood that leads to Golden Gate Park. Visitors should know that public consumption of marijuana is not allowed.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam might be the most obvious tourist destination for marijuana — travelers have been visiting for years in order to experience walking into a "coffee shop" to buy marijuana products from an extensive menu and enjoy them right there. Though that's now been made possible in many other places around the world, Amsterdam is still one of the top-rated cities to consider for a cannabis vacation, particularly if you're after quality. The small, old-timey Grey Area Coffee Shop has lines out the door on a daily basis, according to hundreds of raving TripAdvisor reviews. Amsterdam in the fall is full of thousands of cannabis enthusiasts from around the world who attend the annual High Times Cannabis Cup , a popular cannabis trade show.

St. Louis, Missouri

Though recreational marijuana is illegal in the state, purchasing CBD is federally legal as long as it doesn't contain more than 0.3% THC. St. Louis is one of many American cities capitalizing on the CBD trend. Painters of all levels of expertise come together to Puff, Pass & Paint in an intimate setting along the Mississippi River. This is "canvas and cocktails" class with a cannabis twist that allows participants to use CBD flower. Guests with a medical card may also bring and consume cannabis. And if you prefer a more quiet environment, you can get a CBD-infused facial or massage at The Spa at Hotel Saint Louis . The spa is located in the heart of Downtown St. Louis, which has a charming and historic vibe.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

In Canada, where you can smoke marijuana depends on what province you're in . In Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta, anyone over 18 can legally consume cannabis wherever smoking cigarettes is allowed . However to purchase marijuana, you have to be 19. Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, is famous for its electric street art along "Graffiti alley," which you can learn about while smoking on a guided tour. In Calgary, you can find marijuana-infused tours and experiences for everything from video gaming to paddle boating.

Seattle, Washington

While Seattle offers a lot of tourist hot spots already, its dispensaries are plentiful. Since 2012, anyone 21 and older can legally purchase marijuana from a licensed store in the state of Washington, making it a bustling place for cannabis tourism. Visitors can go on a number of marijuana tours for a look at the "seed-to-sale" process and find a cannabis-friendly place to lodge. A popular neighborhood in the Emerald City is Capitol Hill — people praise the neighborhood vibe as well as the marijuana shops. Even though recreational marijuana is legal in the state, it is only within the law to buy 1 ounce of marijuana, and tourists may not be able to smoke on-site depending on the dispensary. Whether you're visiting Seattle to smoke marijuana or not, you can always check out the view from the Space Needle and people-watch at Pike Place Market.

Las Vegas, Nevada

There is no shortage of tourist activities in Vegas, but there are also a dozen licensed dispensaries in the city limits. The Brews and Buds Tour is the city's first way to experience both the city's cannabis and craft beer scenes. And for a more glitzy Vegas experience, Planet 13 is expected to be a cross between a nightclub and a dispensary. For now, the self-described "cannabis superstore and entertainment complex" will require some additional changes in local legal marijuana legislation before realizing this vision. Despite the boom in cannabis culture and increasing number of dispensaries in Vegas, consumption is only legal in a private residence. And the only legal way to buy marijuana is from a state-licensed store or dispensary.

Coachella Valley, California

Coachella Valley is teeming with canyons, creeks and a host of wilderness adventures, but it's also becoming a hotbed for cannabis. The valley contains the city of Palm Springs, where dispensaries and massive grow operations are booming. At some licensed cannabis businesses in Palm Springs , onsite consumption of marijuana is allowed, making it even more appealing for tourists. Palm Springs also recently issued the first Cannabis Lounge Permit in Southern California to Coachella Valley Green Dragon with a handful of other dispensary and lounge applications awaiting approval from the city. Also in the Coachella Valley region is a cannabis-friendly spa that offers both CBD and THC products with a wide selection of edibles, flowers and concentrates. If you're planning on visiting during the popular Coachella music festival, you should note that cannabis or cannabis products are not allowed inside .

Burlington, Vermont

In Vermont, possession of up to 1 ounce, growing and sharing cannabis are legal, but buying and selling aren't. For travelers, that means it might be more of a wellness trip rather than recreational. And for leaf-peeping tourists, the small, cozy town of Burlington is best in the fall. You can take a stroll under all the foliage and then duck into Jolita Brilliant Massage for a relaxing way to experience cannabis. They offer CBD oil massages and carry CBD infused bath salts, deodorant, soaps and lip balms. Burlington's small-town feel is perfect for strolling through its many waterfront parks or stopping by the farmers market.

Westmoreland, Jamaica

For a cannabis destination off the beaten path, Coral Cove Cannabis Resort is a prime getaway, especially for beach bums. The Jamaican resort is an 18-room oceanfront property bordering a renowned farming village. On the property is a cannabis garden that visitors can walk through. Coral Cove's cannabis is grown in cooperation with the island's Bobo Shanti Rastafarian sect, who are allowed a religious exemption for cannabis cultivation by the Jamaican government. Smoking cannabis as a sacrament is a way of life and protected status at the resort. Otherwise in Jamaica, cannabis is decriminalized but not legal, though the laws are very relaxed, which is why tourists from all over the world flock there to smoke marijuana with an ocean view. If you're looking to extend your trip to other parts of Jamaica, be aware that smoking marijuana in a public place is prohibited, but it is legal to smoke in licensed dispensaries.

Boston, Massachusetts

Like Colorado, Massachusetts is fated to see a hike in cannabis tourism after the first recreational pot shops on the East Coast opened in 2018. Boston Cannabis Tours provides cannabis sight-seeing in the Greater Boston Area, featuring trips to dispensaries, cultivation facilities and restaurants. Visitors can bring up to the state's legal amount of cannabis on the bus, and the guide will indicate when and where it is appropriate to consume. There are also plenty of other ways to experience cannabis, including baking classes. Soul Fresh, a cannabis activities and wellness company, offers a " Salves and Sweets" cooking class as well as marijuana-enhanced meditation and yoga. The same company that offers the Puff, Pass & Paint class in St. Louis has one in Boston, too. The marijuana is B.Y.O.C and the consumption is a lot more fluid. On top of weed activities, Boston's historic architecture and bustling sports scene make it a memorable destination.

Portland, Oregon

What sets Portland's marijuana scene apart from others is the city's history with the plant. The Potlandia Experience Marijuana Tour is the latest offering from Great Oregon Tours. The tour takes to cannabis dispensaries along with places that make Portland such a unique tourist destination — like microbreweries, food carts and other iconic spots. There's also a popular CBD cafe with offerings like vegan chocolate bars and hemp-infused CBD sauces. Public use of marijuana is illegal in Oregon, but people can use recreational marijuana on private property . Portland is also just 45 miles from Salem, where the Hemp and Cannabis Fair is held in the fall. Also called the THC Fair, the event encourages cannabis users as well as entrepreneurs to showcase their contribution to the community. If visitors are hopping states, it's worth noting that transporting marijuana across state lines is not allowed. That even includes California and Washington, where it is legal.

Juneau, Alaska

Alaska's beautiful wilderness and wide variety of animals already make it a bucket-list attraction. And now, tourists can also experience America's northernmost cannabis industry. In Juneau — the capital city of Alaska — visitors can hop on Juneau Cannabis Tours . The tour includes two dispensary visits, seeing part of a grow operation and walking Juneau's historic downtown. Juneau is home to seven marijuana dispensaries and hosts several interesting non-marijuana events that celebrate Alaskan culture as well as music festivals. Anyone 21 years or older can buy and carry up to 1 ounce of marijuana in Alaska. Recently, an ordinance was passed that allows people in Juneau to consume marijuana edibles inside licensed retailers and smoke in designated outdoor areas. Aside from that, the law bans all other public use. For travelers visiting Alaska, be aware that it is also illegal to use marijuana in national parks or forests.

Auburn, Maine

Maine recently legalized recreational marijuana , but due to the state's regulations, there are no official recreational marijuana tours. There are, however, some marijuana-infused activities and destinations, and one in particular offers a little more than a typical bed and breakfast. Maine Greenyards is an eight-bedroom mansion in Auburn on 16 acres of land that bills itself as a "bud and breakfast." The owners do not sell cannabis , but they do organically grow a legal, personal adult-use garden, which they make available to visitors free of charge. Auburn is located on the Androscoggin River, which has picturesque hiking trails and ski slopes.

Montevideo, Uruguay

For tourists heading to Uruguay, the Cannabis Tour of Montevideo includes visits to "grow shops," local bars and a marijuana farming site where a professional cultivator will explain the secrets of the practice. Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalize marijuana in 2013, and the town of Montevideo was integral in that movement. Visitors should definitely try a cup or two of mate — an herbal tea-like drink that originated in South America — infused with weed. Montevideo is a small city full of culture. Travelers should visit the Solis Theatre , a beautiful building and the center of Montevideo's acting scene. It's one of the most renowned theaters in the world and was built in 1856 by a popular Italian architect.

Denver, Colorado

No list of cannabis tourist hotspots would be complete without Dever. Colorado is no stranger to cannabis tourism — in 2016, the state saw 6.5 million tourists visit its ski slopes, mountain vistas and pot shops. And Denver alone is home to over 300 dispensaries . There are plenty of things to do, including an Introductory Cooking with Cannabis class and a Sushi and Joint Rolling class . Some marijuana experiences require you to B.Y.O.C. (bring your own cannabis), and it's as close as they can legally get to including it. Another place worth dipping into is a tour at Euflora dispensary's 6,000-square-foot space. They display marijuana in large plastic containers on tables and allow customers to closely examine and smell the different buds without touching them. With cannabis culture at the forefront, there are companies in Denver that provide safe transportation to and from marijuana-friendly places. Visitors should be aware that public consumption remains illegal in Colorado , and smoking is allowed only in designated areas or marijuana-friendly places.

Remus, Michigan

Another destination where tourists can get their cannabis fix is Remus, Michigan, which hosts the CMCP Harvest Festival . The fest features art, music, food and seminars educating consumers about cannabis cultivation and the culture surrounding it. Topics include how cannabis plays a role in the possible treatment of cancer. Michigan may not be an obvious choice for a cannabis holiday, but it has an active community focused on marijuana and related events since legalizing it in 2018. If visiting, keep a calendar of weed-related events across Michigan handy. Per law, it is illegal to consume cannabis in a public space but onsite consumption at licensed dispensaries may be allowed. Also nearby Remus are over 100 lakes , the Muskegon River, award-winning golf courses and wineries.

British Columbia, Canada

If a luxury cannabis vacation is what you're looking for, embark on the Highest of Highs experience in the province British Columbia, Canada, where recreational adult marijuana use is legal. The adventure takes off from Victoria in a helicopter where fliers are whisked off to a secret mountaintop location for the day with hand-selected bags full of locally made marijuana strains and products. For those looking for more luxury, there are options to chopper in a local chef to cook for the group or even bring along a yoga instructor. They will be launching more luxury cannabis experiences soon. While in British Columbia, you should also take part in nearby Vancouver's Cannabis Crawl. The crawl starts at Victory Square, which is home to the infamous Vancouver "Pot Block," a line of quirky cannabis shops and cafes, and goes through all the cultural hotspots.

Berlin, Germany

Museums are most likely on every tourist's to-see list, and the Hanf Museum in Berlin should be on yours if you're planning a cannabis-related expedition. The exhibition space is devoted exclusively to the agricultural, manufacturing and industrial use of hemp, including legal aspects surrounding it. And for a cool non-marijuana related exhibit, head to the East Side Gallery near the center of Berlin. The open-air gallery consists of a series of murals painted directly on a long remnant of the Berlin Wall. Personal possession of up to 15 grams of marijuana is legal in Berlin. It is illegal to buy and sell it, but there's a gray area when it comes to the legality of actually consuming marijuana. But one thing is for sure, you can't smoke in public.

Christchurch, New Zealand

Christchurch is loaded with art and adventure and features dramatic vistas and scenic spots. It's also the place to go for an educational cannabis vacation. Marijuana has not been legalized in New Zealand, but low-level THC cannabis like hemp is acceptable . The Whakamana Cannabis Museum in Christchurch, New Zealand, is at the forefront of the country's push for legalization. The museum's library stocks over 100 books about cannabis, including material on politics and ancient cultures that have had an impact on the global cannabis community. In Christchurch, travelers can also find customised tours that showcase New Zealand's trendy side including " gondola rides " and wineries.

A guide to the best cannabis dispensaries, lodging and experiences in Denver

Apr 19, 2021 • 9 min read

best pot tourism

The Mile High City is a magical place to visit, whether you've got 24 hours to spend in Denver  or a longer stretch to explore. From its spiritually moving outdoor spaces to an award-winning food scene, Denver is somewhere you could visit a hundred times and still find something new. For many tourists, however, the appeal of Denver isn’t in the green of the prairie, but the green of its dispensaries.

While cannabis tourism as been a boon for Colorado at large and especially Denver, you should do some research before you toke up. We made it easy by breaking down everything you need to know about getting high in view of the Front Range of the Rockies, from 420-friendly lodging to dispensaries to staying on the right side of the law.

Editor's note: during  COVID-19  there may be additional travel restrictions. Check the latest guidance in before planning a trip, and always follow local government health advice.

Cannabis Laws in Denver, Colorado

Before you head to the store, it’s important to understand the laws regarding cannabis in Colorado. Right off the bat, age matters. You need to be at least 21 to buy or consume cannabis in Colorado. While the state does offer a medical card for cannabis, it merely offers a discount and stronger product for medical users – and you need to be a Colorado resident. Anyone of age can buy cannabis in Denver, however, provided they have proper ID.

When you head to a dispensary you can purchase up to one ounce, or 28 grams, of cannabis. However, the definition of an ounce varies with different products. The original ounce law only pertains to the cannabis flower. Edibles and concentrates are another matter.

A man in a white bucket hat walks down the sidewalk wearing a Colorado state flag as a cape, where the yellow center of the flag is overlaid with a green cannabis leaf

For edibles, the laws limit users to buying 800 milligrams of THC per day, while limits for concentrates are set at 8 grams per day due to the strength of products like shatter, wax, and cannabis oil. For most users these limits won’t ever matter. An ounce is far more than you could smoke during the average vacation, an edible with 800 milligrams of THC will ruin most people’s day, and consuming 8 grams of concentrates would be hell on your lungs.

Before you hit the dispensary, you should have a game plan. You don’t want to buy more than you can consume or, worse, get so high you ruin your trip. If you’re not a regular consumer or you’re getting back into pot after a break, take it easy. There’s always time to consume some more, but once you’re high you’re gonna stay at that level for a while.

It is highly illegal to consume cannabis in a vehicle you’re operating or to drive under the influence of THC. Don’t get the most chill of DUIs – instead, call an Uber, taxi, or book a tour on the pot bus.

Public cannabis consumption

Technically, public cannabis use in any form has been illegal under Colorado law, be it smoking, vaping, or eating. You can get busted for enjoying pot on the sidewalk, at a concert, in a bar, in alleys, or at a ski resort if you’re caught. Cannabis consumption is also still illegal on federal lands, including state parks, national parks, Bureau of Land Management areas, and portions of some ski runs.

The good news is you can legally consume your cannabis on private property, including private homes, some hotels, and lounges. Some spaces such as Tertra Private Lounge and Garden  are able to get around Colorado’s indoor smoking ban by operating as private clubs. For a small membership fee, you’re given a comfortable place to consume your own stash and access to an electronic dab bar or vaporizer.

Starting January 1, 2020 House Bill 1230  is loosening those restrictions, however. This new piece of legislation gives venues an official exception to the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act that had, up until now, made smoking weed in public a no-no. It also allows for "marijuana hospitality spaces in which medical and retail marijuana may be consumed on site" as well as "authorizes a retail food establishment to apply for a marijuana hospitality establishment license" as long as that restaurant or cafe doesn't also have a liquor license.  So look out for more lounges, canna-cafes, and Puff-and-Paint studios to start opening in Denver this year.

There are two semicircular red leather Chesterfield sofas with white faux sheep skins draped over them. Above is a chandelier made of antlers.

420-friendly hotels and cannabis hostels in Denver

One of the easiest ways to save money and find explicitly 420-friendly lodging is to opt for homesharing. Sites like AirBnb make it easy for hosts to indicate if their accommodations allow for on-premise cannabis-consumption. If you want even more of a sure thing, sites like Bud and Breakfast offer a similar inventory of offbeat inns and room rentals that are explicitly for stoners. As an added bonus, the cheapest hotels which allow smoking in rooms are often still triple the price of the many 420-friendly rooms.

Depending on how “rustic” you mind getting, the deals are undeniable. During my trip to Denver I rented a bunk at Hostel Kush  – a massive house where every feasible space was listed on Airbnb. For $18 per night you could get a sofa on the back deck, but for $25 you could get a bunk bed or a private room for $35.

The house was full of tourists, travelers, seasonal pot workers, and like-minded friends. While it’s rude not to contribute anything to folks offering you weed, everyone in the house was incredibly generous. Keep your eyes open, plot your stay in advance, and you can save a ton of money.

If you prefer a kush-ier (pun intended) hotel experience, never fear. Cannatourism in Denver really opens up when you have a little extra money to spend. There are boutique hostels like Ember in Capitol Hill that offer budget-friendly glam, a hot tub, and a private patio area where you're welcome to partake with new friends.

Or you can opt for a cannabis friendly hotel like  Southeast Denver Suites  (starting at $129USD) or Arrowhead Manor  ($379.99USD). That freedom comes with a catch, however – many of the advertised 420-friendly hotels are really just vape-friendly due to indoor smoking regulations. That being said, the Denver Tech Center , Broadway Suites , and Southeast Denver Suites offer complimentary vaporizers with their 420 friendly rooms. Just make sure to ask when making your reservations.

Now that you know where you can smoke and sleep, the next order of business is finding a dispensary. The green gold rush has lead to a host of places to buy and plenty of deals to attract new customers. No matter which Denver neighborhood you're visiting – from the trendy arts districts like  RiNo  and Santa Fe  to the city center near the Colorado Convention Center and beyond to the 'burbs of Aurora  – you’re going to find pot at cheaper prices than prohibition states and at way higher quality.

To get the most out of your dollars head to  High Level Health , which offers what is easily some the best deals in town – and not far from the mall, and other downtown destinations. They even offer a veterans discount.

The exterior of High Level Health dispensary in Denver, Colorado has red brick around glass windows that are obscured by sheets of white paper. A large green sign reads 21+, while another shows the Medical Marijuana logo. Right next door is a cafe and bar with outdoor patio seating

Another favorite spot is Kind Love , an award-winning dispensary with great prices and late hours. This dispensary takes its last customer at 11:45pm, making it great for late last minute pickups. Just make sure you get there by 11:20 at the latest – you’re probably not the only person who forgot to buy earlier.

Or you can check out SimplyPure in the Highland neighborhood. It not only won 2018 The Grow-Off Best Flavor Champion award, it has the distinction of being owned by an Black husband/wife duo, both of whom are veterans of the US military. The pair have been committed to working to end the stigma of medical and recreational weed consumption and increase equality for people of color in Colorado's cannabis industry.

Church, comedy, and cannabis

Once you've stocked up, head to the International Church of Cannabis . While flower can’t be consumed on the premises unless you’re a member and it's a special event, the rainbow-hued nave is a sight to behold. The Elevationists host daily guided meditation/laser light shows in their incredible fully painted sanctuary for $10 to $15 that’s worth visiting even if you don’t get high in advance.

You should also make sure to check out at least one comedy show while you’re in Denver. It features one of the best scenes in the country and is a great way to enhance a stoned evening for a few bucks.  If you time your visit right, you might even catch the Gateway Show when it's in town. The premise is that the comedians on the bill do one set sober like any other comedy show, but partake in an undisclosed location during the intermission and do the second set stoned.

Cannabis tours in Denver

The city’s cannabis tour groups offer a stunning range of options that craft your experience to your interests. Ever wanted to go to a grow operation? You can do that. Curious about the wonderful world of concentrates, but don’t want to dive into dabs on your own? There's a tour for you.  My 420 Tours  also has offerings that include more traditional tours as well, like brewery and dispensary tours, weed-based cocktail experiences, and sushi-and-joint-rolling classes, amongst others.

During my stay in Denver, I joined in on the Cannabis & Beyond experience. This $59 tour took us to two dispensaries, with deals at both, then over to the Church of Cannabis for a laser show, before ending at a local artisanal food court for some munchies. Your group gets piled into an incredibly comfortable party bus stocked with glass pieces, papers, and, most importantly, water.

A gentleman in a black pullover looks at his phone while he waits in the lobby of the Native Roots dispensary in Denver, Colorado. Behind him is a large graphic mural with cartoon-style bongs, lightbulbs, flying saucers, matches, and slogans like "Dank!" and "Sour Diesel"

While the bus is in motion, everyone is free to smoke and consume as much cannabis as they like. Even before we made our first stop at the dispensary my enthusiastic group had already hotboxed the bus. By the time we made it to the Church of Cannabis for the laser show, everyone was happily ready to meet our new green god.

Our tour guide, Ian, was knowledgeable about both cannabis and Denver. Most importantly, it was a great way to see different parts of the city while smoking and letting someone else handle the drive. My 420 Tours range from $59 tours to $1,000+ multi-day experiences that include accommodations.

Stay safe and have a good time

Pot tourism in Denver is a lot like traveling anywhere in the world. Plan ahead, learn the basics of the laws, and don’t get so messed up you ruin your trip. If you’re new to cannabis – especially edibles or concentrates – start slow. If you’re in a group of people smoking, make sure you drink water and maybe abstain once or twice if people are passing multiple joints or bowls. You always have time to get more high, but once you’re there the journey lasts a while.

Can You Fly With Weed?

best pot tourism

Now that we’ve figured out the the world’s best weed-friendly countries and states (and where to buy it safely), one question remains: can you fly with weed? The answer is…it’s complicated.

Even if you’re in a state or country where cannabis is legal, the moment you walk into an airport, you are officially in federal jurisdiction territory. For example, if you purchase cannabis and are flying out of a 420-friendly state , like Colorado, you’re technically still breaking the law because cannabis is illegal on a federal level and strictly prohibited on all federal property in the United States.

Still confused? Here are a few questions (and answers!) on what you should expect before flying with weed.

Can You Bring a Vape Pen on a Plane?

Yes, you can bring a vape pen on a plane, but only in your carry-on. The Transportation Security Administration states that “The FAA prohibits these devices in checked bags. Battery-powered E-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems may only be carried in the aircraft cabin (in carry-on baggage or on your person). Check with your airline for additional restrictions. Remove all electronic cigarette and vaping devices from carry-on bags if checked at the gate or planeside.”

While there’s no specification on the TSA website about whether marijuana vape pens fall under this policy, vape pens and marijuana vape pens are indistinguishable. When traveling with any type of cannabis product, use common sense and keep your products concealed for the duration of your trip. The use of vape pens and marijuana or otherwise is obviously forbidden on the plane and will result in passenger arrest.

Can You Fly with Medical Marijuana?

Yes, generally, you can fly with medical marijuana in both your carry-on and checked bags in the US— with some restrictions. Marijuana and some cannabis-infused products (CBD oil), are still illegal under federal law unless the products contain no more than 0.3 percent THC. If caught with more, TSA is well within its rights to report violations to local, state or federal authorities.

To ensure you do not run into any trouble, travel with your medical marijuana card, pack your weed in airtight containers to contain the odor, and only fly with small amounts of weed that won’t attract attention.

Is It Legal To Fly With Recreational Weed?

Is it possible? Yes! Is it legal? Nope. However, many recreational marijuana users feel comfortable flying with small amounts of weed. They, of course, follow a few simple steps to ensure to avoid any trouble.

As previously mentioned, when traveling with weed and weed products, always place them in your carry-on, not your checked baggage. Checked bags are regularly searched at random, so your best bet at avoiding unwanted attention is to pack your weed in your carry-on in a nondescript, airtight container. Pill bottles are great for joints and small amounts of cannabis.

If you plan on flying with weed, keep in mind that you are breaking the law. If you’re flying with a large amount of weed and you are caught, you will likely be charged with the intent to distribute, which is a serious offense, so only fly with small amounts.

Should You Fly With Edibles?

While still illegal if purchased for recreational use, if you want to get on a plane with weed, flying with edibles may be the easiest way to go. Store all edibles in your carry-on and remove all of the original packaging for the best chance of making it through TSA safely.

Can you fly with delta-8 and other federally legal cannabinoids?

The popularity of legal cannabinoids has experienced significant growth in the US in recent years. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp products were federally legalized in the US, including Delta-8 THC which provides some of the same psychoactive and medicinal benefits . It is totally legal to fly with these products as long as they contain less than 0.3% delta-9 THC. Keep them in their original packaging and you should be good to go.

What Happens If You Get Caught With Weed at the Airport?

According to TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein when speaking to the Wall Street Journal , “If a TSA officer comes across [pot] while they’re conducting a bag check, they are obligated to report it to the police, and then it’s up to the police how they want to handle it.” The severity of your punishment will depend on three factors: the amount of weed you’re traveling with, your location, and the officer’s mood. Farbstein goes on to say, “It’s up to the officers to make those sorts of decisions.” If you’re flying with small amounts of weed in a legal state, you’ll likely be waived through, asked to put your weed in an amnesty box , or simply have your weed confiscated and thrown out.

Remember, it is still a risk and getting arrested is always a possible outcome. Flying with any amount of marijuana over what is considered “a small amount” is asking for trouble, even in 420-friendly states.

How Do You Bring Weed On a Plane?

Okay, so you understand the risks. Now what? Use common sense and only travel with a small amount. When packing, remember to only pack marijuana products in your carry-on bag. It’s vital to use an airtight container to hold your weed, edibles, and pre-rolled joints. If your container is not airtight, the easily identifiable smell will not be contained and you’ll probably get caught. Ziplock bags, pill bottles, and marijuana-specific stash devices are ideal containers for flying with marijuana.

Can you Travel with Weed Across State Lines?

Generally speaking, traveling with weed across state lines is not a good idea. So, leaving Colorado after a mountain vacation with weed in tow could have severe consequences. Unlike TSA agents, cops do prioritize finding weed. Additionally, cops tend to pull over travelers as they cross state lines. If a cop claims they smell marijuana, they probably have cause to search your vehicle. If you do plan on crossing state lines with marijuana, keep your weed in an airtight container and store it in your locked glove compartment where a cop would need a warrant to search.

Should You Travel With Cannabis When Visiting Different Countries?

Marijuana tourism isn’t just an American phenomenon. Weed legalization has spread rapidly across the globe. While stoners have been traveling to Amsterdam to sample the Dutch café culture for decades, countries like Canada and Argentina have recently legalized recreational marijuana. Still, countries with legalized recreational marijuana forbid crossing borders with the drug. So, not only can you not pack your favorite space cakes and pre-rolls in your suitcase after your trip, but you can’t bring any weed into the country either.

Everything You Need to Know About Dispensaries

best pot tourism

In 1970’s Amsterdam, you could walk into a “ coffeeshop ,” lay down a few guilders , and walk away with legal cannabis and paraphernalia without a worry. It took the rest of the world a few years to catch up, but today, dispensaries — or weed shops—are popping up like crazy around the world.

Medical Dispensaries

Medical dispensaries provide patients with a secure location purchase medically prescribed cannabis to sooth and treat ailments. They’re usually regulated and taxed differently than recreational cannabis dispensaries, so prices may very between the two.  Before visiting a medical dispensary, you’ll need:

  • A prescription from your doctor, medical cannabis certification, or whatever else is required by your state.
  •  A valid, unexpired ID or passport (in most cases, you must be 18 or older to obtain medical cannabis in the US)

Recreational Dispensaries

Unlike medical dispensaries, recreational dispensaries are available for people without a prescription from a doctor. Adult-use/recreational shops require fewer prerequisites than a medical dispensary, but there are still plenty of things you need to know before visiting. Before visiting a recreational dispensary, you’ll need:

  • A valid, unexpired ID or passport (you must be 21 or older to purchase recreational cannabis in the US.

420-Friendly Hotels

best pot tourism

Weed and a good night’s sleep is pretty much synonymous. It may be illegal to smoke inside most public spaces around the world, but hotels, hostels and resorts have found plenty of ways to skirt the law in favor of a good time. From mini-bars filled with edibles at The Standard in LA to weed welcome kits at the Jupiter in Portland and wake-n-bake samplers every morning at Adagio in Denver, 420 resorts and hotels are popping up all over the place.

Cannabis-centric websites like Bud and Breakfast and USA Weed offer databases of listings for 420-friendly accommodations around the world. These sites allow travelers to search for hotels, hostels, and resorts that offer cannabis-friendly amenities and ensure that their stay is a comfortable and enjoyable one.

In addition to offering cannabis-friendly amenities, many 420-friendly hotels also provide information on local dispensaries, cannabis tours, and other cannabis-related activities in the area. Some hotels even offer cannabis-infused spa treatments or other wellness experiences.

When it comes down to it, 420-friendly hotels provide a unique and comfortable option for cannabis enthusiasts looking for a place to stay that accommodates their lifestyle. With the growing acceptance of cannabis around the world, it is likely that we will see more of these hotels popping up, offering an increasingly diverse range of cannabis-friendly amenities and experiences.

Cannabis Cafes & Clubs

best pot tourism

If you’ve been to Europe, you’ve definitely heard of weed cafes . But what about cannabis clubs?

The first cannabis club popped up in Barcelona in 2001 as a way to legally obtain and consume weed in the city. While recreational weed is still illegal in Spain, clubs are able to exist on a technicality: Consumption and cultivation by adults in a private space is totally legal. This legal loophole has allowed cannabis clubs to exist and thrive in Spain for the last two decades.

Cannabis clubs are membership-based establishments that operate much like a dispensary. Members pay a fee to access the club, and then they’re able to purchase and consume cannabis on the premises. These clubs are typically designed to provide a safe and comfortable space for cannabis users to consume their preferred strains of cannabis without fear of legal repercussions.

Cannabis clubs typically require members to be at least 18 years old and to provide identification when joining. Members are also expected to abide by certain rules, such as not sharing cannabis with non-members and not selling cannabis to others. Most clubs also have a maximum amount of cannabis that members can purchase and consume in a single visit.

In addition to providing a safe and legal space for cannabis consumption, cannabis clubs can also offer a social aspect for members. Many clubs organize events and activities for members, such as live music performances, educational workshops, and cannabis tastings.

While cannabis clubs are not legal in all parts of the world, they have become increasingly popular in many European countries, and are beginning to gain traction in North America as well. As more and more countries legalize cannabis, it is likely that cannabis clubs will become more widespread, providing cannabis users with a safe and legal way to enjoy their preferred strains in a social setting.

Cannabis & CBD Spas

best pot tourism

We get it, you love weed. But do you love it enough to let a stranger rub it all over your body?

Cannabis spas are another emerging trend in the cannabis industry, offering a unique way for cannabis enthusiasts to relax and unwind. These spas typically offer a range of cannabis-infused treatments and therapies, including massages, facials, and body wraps.

Cannabis spas have their roots in ancient cultures, where cannabis was used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. Today, cannabis spas have been modernized, incorporating the latest technologies and techniques to provide a luxurious and immersive experience for guests.

At a cannabis spa, guests can expect to be greeted by a peaceful and relaxing environment, with soothing music, comfortable seating, and aromatherapy scents. Before any treatments begin, guests are usually required to fill out a medical questionnaire and provide identification to confirm their age.

The treatments at a cannabis spa are typically infused with cannabis or CBD, which are known to have calming and anti-inflammatory properties. These treatments can range from a simple foot massage to a full-body wrap, with cannabis-infused products like oils, lotions, and balms.

One of the most popular treatments at cannabis spas is the cannabis-infused massage, which involves the use of cannabis-infused oils to soothe sore muscles and promote relaxation. Cannabis facials are also gaining popularity, as they can help to reduce inflammation and improve skin health.

While cannabis spas are still relatively new, they have quickly become a popular destination for cannabis enthusiasts and those looking for a unique spa experience. As cannabis continues to become more widely accepted, it is likely that we will see more cannabis spas opening up around the world, providing a new way for people to enjoy the benefits of this versatile plant.

420 Tours and Weed Vacations

best pot tourism

As cannabis legalization continues to spread across the globe, a new type of seeker is emerging: cannabis travelers, or people who look for cannabis-friendly destinations for some much-needed R&R (without giving up the green).

420 tours and weed vacations are in high-demand among cannabis enthusiasts who want to explore the world of cannabis and its culture. These tours and vacations provide a unique and immersive experience for travelers who want to learn more about the plant and its uses, while also enjoying the local sights and activities.

420 tours are typically guided tours that take visitors to different cannabis-related destinations, like dispensaries, grow facilities, and cannabis cafes. These tours can be found in many places around the world where cannabis is legal, including Amsterdam, Colorado, and California.

On a 420 tour, visitors can expect to learn about the history of cannabis, its various strains, and the different methods of consumption. They can also see first-hand how cannabis is grown and processed, and even try some samples themselves. Many 420 tours also include visits to local attractions and cultural landmarks, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the local culture.

Weed vacations, on the other hand, are more like traditional vacations, but with a cannabis twist. These vacations are designed to provide cannabis enthusiasts with a relaxing and enjoyable experience, while also offering the opportunity to learn more about the plant and its culture.

Weed vacations can take many forms, from beachside retreats to mountain getaways, and can include activities such as cannabis cooking classes, cannabis yoga, and cannabis-infused spa treatments. These vacations can also provide opportunities to explore local attractions and activities, such as hiking, skiing, and sightseeing.

Both 420 tours and weed vacations offer a unique and immersive experience for cannabis enthusiasts who want to learn more about the plant and its culture. As cannabis becomes more widely accepted around the world, it is likely that we will see more of these tours and vacations popping up, providing travelers with a new and exciting way to explore the world of cannabis.

420 Festivals

best pot tourism

420 events and festivals are generally a good time, but believe it or not, they also help break stigmas and pave the way for legalization around the world. Festival organizers pull off throwing events in states and countries where cannabis is still illegal via the Temporary Autonomous Zone principle—creating temporary spaces that elude formal structures of control.

Today, 420 festivals can take many forms, from outdoor concerts to cannabis expos, and are typically held on or around April 20th, which is considered a holiday among cannabis enthusiasts.

420 festivals provide a unique opportunity for cannabis enthusiasts to come together and celebrate their love for the plant. These events often feature live music, food and drink vendors, cannabis dispensaries, and educational seminars and workshops.

One of the most famous 420 festivals is the annual “ Sweetwater 420 Fest ” held in Atlanta, Georgia. This festival features three days of live music, art exhibits, and cannabis-related vendors and attractions.

Other popular 420 festivals and events include the High Times Cannabis Cup , which is held in various locations around the world and features a competition for the best cannabis strains and products, as well as the Hash Bash in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which has been held annually since 1972 and is one of the longest-running cannabis events in the world.

420 festivals and events also provide an opportunity for cannabis advocates to come together and push for the legalization of cannabis. Many events feature speakers and activists who share their knowledge and experiences with the crowd, and use the event as a platform to raise awareness and advocate for cannabis reform.

Overall, 420 festivals and events are a fun and exciting way for cannabis enthusiasts to come together and celebrate their love for the plant. As cannabis continues to become more widely accepted around the world, it is likely that we will see more of these events popping up, providing a platform for cannabis culture to thrive and grow.

These Weed-Friendly Travel Spots Will Make You Want To Plan An Escape

Alia Stearns

Vacations are freaking fantastic. Cannabis can also be freaking fantastic, when used wisely. Combining the two is a no-brainer.

The list below includes some of the best weed-friendly travel spots in the country. They each offer something that the others don’t, so you can make them fit your needs. Wanna get back to nature? Done. Wanna spend all night in a club? Done. Consider our food and lodging recommendations a starting point and hit up Google to plan a full itinerary. Or hop in the car and wing it. Either way, a few days spent getting high in a rad city that won’t haul you downtown or ticket you for your vice of choice is a luxury that a lot of people don’t have.

Los Angeles, California

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylo Brando (@braindamage81)

California came out swinging as the first to legalize cannabis for medical use in 1996 and then stalled for some time on the recreational front. Everyone seemed to have a medical card for a hot minute in the late 90s and 2000s. Now, the huge state functions as one of the top destinations for weed enthusiasts and general travelers alike.

We’ve mentioned The Standard, Hollywood as the first hotel with a dispensary in the past , and it’s a genuinely wonderful option for a 420-friendly vacay. But we also think Hicksville Pines Bud & Breakfast is awesome. It’s the first of its kind in the state, and cannabis is cool in all public areas, community vaporizers are provided (so no need to pack paraphernalia), and you can even smoke in room 420. Plus, the décor is wild.

If you want to keep your high going all day long, consider Alchemy Lounge and/or Hitman Coffee Shop , which both require membership (but you can get a day pass). They are amazing creative centers that encourage guests to use cannabis while hanging out and enjoying an espresso and some cool company. These places don’t sell herb (though they do rent rigs), so stop by one of the many local dispensaries before heading out.

Denver, Colorado

As the first state to legalize recreational marijuana use, Colorado has a bit of a jump on the rest of the country. Denver is cool af out of the gate, but its growing cannabis hospitality industry makes it a premier destination for a weed vacation. Before we even get to a place to stay, we want to firmly encourage you to take advantage of services like Loopr , a mobile cannabis lounge, and High End Transportation , a minority- and female-owned weed transportation company. They are worth it.

When it comes to lodgings, you have to get in on the bud and breakfast culture that was born in Denver. If you’re feeling, stay at The Adagio — a Victorian home in a historic neighborhood and the first hotel of its kind. But if you really prefer a standard option, try the 420 Tours inclusion package at the 16th Street Mall Hotel , which offers a complimentary vaporizer rental, Uber/Lyft coupons for first-time riders, dispensary coupons, and local cannabis lifestyle magazines.

There is a ton of great food in Denver, but we love a theme, so we think you should consider one of the city’s brews and bud tours. And, if you want to really give in to the munchies and freaking devour everything in sight, get thee to Ian’s Pizza and order the mac n’ cheese, burrito, or loaded baked potato pizza.

Seattle, Washington

https://www.instagram.com/p/S5wZpYLfeL/?tagged=spaceneedlepotparty

Seattle is known as The Emerald City not because it bears any relationship to the Wizard of Oz, but because the verdant Pacific Northwest in which it is nestled is breathtakingly green (which I guess you can take as a weed pun as well as a landscape fact). Between the city’s natural beauty, exciting activities, and tons of dispensaries, Seattle is a no-brainer when it comes to picking a weed-friendly destination.

You have some accommodations options, but all of them will have you smoking outside. We like the vibe at this urban Seattle Airbnb , which boasts a hot tub and claims to be cannabis inspired. It’s not terribly different than most offerings in the city. However, we like knowing upfront that a homeowner is cool with cannabis before e spark up, and this lodging’s owner is very accepting. We also want to mention Innthrall (damn, Seattle loves a pun), a kinky b&b with toys and furniture and play spaces for exploring all things erotic. They have created a curtained, heated patio for cannabis use, and it is a treat.

Of course, Seattle also has a vibrant, progressive foodie scene and the restaurants that make it are a solid visit on a vacation. But if you get super high and just want to fill your face with tasty yums in a place no one will judge your heavy-lidded, pink eyes, you gotta go to Beth’s Café , a 24-hour diner. You can mow through a 12-egg omelet and one of the best milkshakes of your life. If you are less couchlocked stoner and more healthy, hiking cannabis enthusiast, hit up Betsutenjin for some dreamy, creamy ramen. It’s not a place where diners are meant to linger, so get in, slurp down some noodles and pork bone broth, and head out for new adventures.

Portland, Oregon

Most people don’t know that Oregon was the first state in the nation to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of cannabis in 1973. From 1999 to 2005, the ratio of residents using pot in the state outpaced the general populace by 32-45 percent. Oregon loves it some cannabis, and though the state has a number of gorgeous areas to visit, Portland with its quirks is a can’t miss travel spot.

It’s probably an obvious pick to suggest you take advantage of the 420 package at Jupiter Hotel because it was the first cannabis-friendly hotel deal in the state, and it has gotten a lot of press. But honestly, it remains a solid set-up for a visit. The hotel is in a great location for walking to bars, restaurants, and shopping. It’s a funky (yet well-maintained) midcentury marvel. And, you get a munchie kit, a vape pen, a t-shirt, and coupons to local dispensaries. All you need is to buy some weed, and you are set.

There’s no rule saying that you have to hit a food truck when you visit Portland, but with over 500 operating, you are really missing out if you don’t. The most famous one is probably Nong’s Khao Man Gai , where they serve signature chicken and rice that people line up to get their hands on. You also have the option of seeing a show and grabbing a bite at the Jupiter’s Doug Fir Lounge , which is world renowned. And, if you are thinking a doughnut sounds great when you are stoned, forget about VooDoo. They are so ten years ago. Right now, the Portland chain doing the most is Blue Star .

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is fun no matter how you slice it. It is, after all, America’s Playground. But with the legalization of recreational cannabis sales in Nevada in 2017, the fun-meter is dialed to 11.

There are a fair number of Las Vegas hotels that will accommodate cannabis use, but we think travel should be fun and exciting and there is no reason to visit Vegas and book a cookie cutter room. That’s why we love Clairbnb , the bed and breakfast brainchild of 2011 Playmate of the Year and former headliner at The Stratosphere, Clair Sinclair. This weed-friendly space blocks from Fremont Street in downtown is too cool. Every room is themed and meticulously designed. From the Swingin’ 70s Suite to the Vintage Glitz Suite, you will be impressed. Plus, any pictures you take while you are there will be fire because they all look like movie sets.

Alright, you are gonna hit the strip for sure, and if you have killer munchies, chances are you will head into the first buffet you see and get your goddamn money’s worth. But if you want to set a mood and embrace an old-school Vegas treasure (not to mention pretend you are Robert De Niro or Sharon Stone in Casino or anyone in Showgirls ), you have to hit The Peppermill . The service is friendly, the food is decent (breakfast all day, yo), and the drinks are creative. But it’s the neon lights and the straight up nostalgia that make it awesome. Be sure to spend some time in the Fireside Lounge while you are there. A few pics of you lounging near the famed fire pit that sits over water will make your vacation shots complete.

Anchorage, Alaska

https://www.instagram.com/p/Blucp4qFCAo/?tagged=alaskacannabis

Anchorage can be a year-round destination if a subarctic winter climate and near total absence of sun doesn’t scare you, but we would recommend taking your vacation during warmer months when the area is truly a natural wonder to behold.

There are some accommodations in the area that will look the other way if you vape while staying as a guest, but we prefer to stay places that are totally down with cannabis culture, which is why we can’t like this Anchorage Airbnb. Blocks from downtown, this home is completely 420-friendly and has a great yard with a hammock, outdoor games, smoker, and barbeque to enjoy when the weather is nice. It’s a nice homebase for exploring the city, including nearby dispensaries, where you can stock up on weed to enjoy once you get back to your lodgings.

As cannabis was made legal by a ballot initiative in 2014, the state has had time to develop their weed scene a fair bit but it’s still illegal to smoke pot outdoors and the city hasn’t provided safe indoor spaces to do it since shutting down the city’s last remaining cannabis club. If you go to Anchorage for a weed-friendly trip, the laws of Alaska pretty much mean you are going to have fun at some dispensaries and get high at your lodgings while enjoying a really cool city. While you are there, be sure to score a pie from Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria , a local institution and the maker of a mac n’ cheese pizza with reindeer sausage, as well as the Shrimp Fiesta pizza. Be prepared to wait because everybody loves this place.

Boston, Massachusetts

For a few years, Massachusetts wasn’t getting many tourists looking to explore the state’s weed culture because though it was legal to possess, sales didn’t become legal until July 1, 2018. This put people in the difficult position of having to choose between the risk of getting popped traveling with cannabis or trying to find it once they arrived. That should be changing soon, although it remains an issue.

Lodgings that profess to be 420-friendly are still hard to find. Though there was a company poised to establish themselves in the area, difficulty with federal laws forced them to pause their brand. You are, therefore, left primarily with private lodgings. We recommend hitting up the website Bud & Breakfast for a rental. They range in set-up, but there are totally some perfect ones. We are big fans of the rental that comes with an ounce of cannabis . Medical grade pot and the option to smoke indoors? Yes, please.

Once you find yourself comfortably high in Boston, you have your choice of completely delectable munchies. Word on the street is that you have to try the Shadowless duck fat fries at Shojo . Hand-cut Russets are fried twice in bubbling duck fat, then topped with mapo tofu and a cheese sauce made of kimchi brine, American cheese, and gelatin. Or, hit up Citrus & Salt for some coastal Mexican cuisine that includes an inspired take on elote using Flamin’ Hot Cheeto crumbs.

Fact: Boston is making the food stoners crave.

Auburn/Lewiston, Maine

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maine Greenyards (@mainegreenyards)

Auburn and Lewiston, like Boston, are a bit of a conundrum because it will likely be the spring of 2019 before the first recreational retail stores are open and running despite the legalization of recreational cannabis passing a couple years ago. The upside is that when you get your hands on some pot, you can carry it around freely (and in larger amounts than in any other state) and use it in a private location without legal trouble. And that’s more than you can say about the majority of the other states.

Although we think Portland, with its breweries and its lobster rolls, may be the coolest city in Maine, Auburn and its close neighbor across the Androscoggin River, Lewiston, are super underrated. Head inland, let go of your need for lighthouses, and give these historic mill towns a shot. For one thing, Auburn offers you the chance to stay at Maine Greenyards — a boutique cannabis accommodation. The property features a midcentury mansion, and people who choose to stay get homegrown gifts from the garden, eggs from the free-ranging chickens on the property, and access to the owners who keep a cannabis garden and can answer any questions guests may have. Although, sadly, you can’t buy any of the weed they grow, but you can trim it if the season is right and bolster your own cultivation skills.

Pop into Labadie’s Bakery in Lewiston for the state’s signature dessert, the whoopie pie. They were actually invented here. Sure, the recipe can be traced back to the Amish in Lancaster County, but it took New Englanders to add marshmallow fluff. And, you have to hit Fuel for a specialty cocktail alongside a rich, seasonal dinner like a tender, braised pork shank with brussels sprouts and sweet potato hash in a red wine and balsamic reduction.

Burlington, Vermont

Here we go again. You can possess recreational cannabis legally in Vermont, but cannot yet purchase it. And, this is why cannabis tourism is growing and thriving on the west coast and just has not picked up out east yet. It will, soon enough. In the meantime, there are still a ton of cool cities to visit and nice weed-friendly scenes. Burlington is just such a town with just such a scene.

When it comes to accommodations, we like our stays with some character. That’s why we suggest you opt for an Airbnb stay when you go to Burlington. For a relatively low price, you can stay at the Fresh and Funky apartment downtown. It’s a two-bedroom unit in a classic home that has been painted in a variety of bright hues and filled with unique furniture. Plus, there is a whirlpool tub and a costume closet. You’ll be able to take some great photos here, as well as really enjoy getting high and hanging out.

Though you can’t settle in to a restaurant, brewery, or bar and start vaping away, the Airbnb option puts you walking distance to downtown, so you can totally pre-game. Then, it’s time to have some beer because Vermont has the most craft breweries per capita, and Burlington is no slouch. Start at Fiddlehead , move to Magic Hat , head to Switchback , and wind things up at Citizen Cider . Also, maybe it’s trite, but get all the maple syrup that you can. In addition to downing crepes and pancakes, search for a maple creemee (creemeee is Vermonter for soft serve).

Washington, DC

Since 2014, the nation’s capital has allowed people to carry around less than two ounces of weed, but as yet you cannot purchase it, leaving you to rely on kind people who choose to “gift” it to you (which is legal). Or, keep your ear to the ground for cannabis pop-ups, the city’s popular way to get around the law. If you buy a t-shirt and the vendor just happens to like your face and give you some bud, what are you gonna do?

One way to get around asking a bunch of people if they feel like gifting you some pot is to pick a savvy accommodation that includes a free sample. For example, The Cozy Canna-Inn offers guest a free pre-roll when they stay, as well as relaxing cannabis-infused massage oil. There are even free hookah sessions. We love hookah! Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the hosts treat guests like family and are on-hand to offer tourism and weed guidance.

If you want to have a true D.C. experience, you have to DIY a U Street Taco, a fatty delight created by the Washington City Paper . You buy a chili half smoke (a half beef, half pork hot dog smothered in homemade chili) at Ben’s Chili Bowl and take it across the street to Jumbo Pizza , where you purchase a giant slice to cradle your half smoke. Then, you down that beast.

Cannabis Tourism

It seems that every few months, the list of places with legal recreational marijuana grows even longer. Amsterdam has been a marijuana hotspot for decades, Colorado added itself to the list in 2012, and in 2018, Canada got on board with recreational bud. Not everyone is lucky enough to live in a place where marijuana flows freely (and legally), however. This has given rise to a new field within the marijuana industry: marijuana tourism.

Whether people are traveling from their marijuana-friendly states to see how green the grass is on the other side or are planning a marijuana vacation to experience the fun of spending time in a legal state or country, cannabis tourism has given rise to tax revenue for governments, great opportunity for businesses, as well as challenges for travelers and local authorities.

Cannabis Tourism Guide

As legalization spreads, marijuana tourism is becoming increasingly popular.

Cannabis Tourism by the Numbers

One of the first things that became apparent about legal recreational cannabis is that it would be a huge attraction for tourists. Amsterdam knows this well; its cannabis coffee shops have been a draw for travelers since the late 60s.

What of the newest wave of marijuana legalization? Colorado marijuana tourism is an excellent case study in this new frontier; because it legalized recreational back in 2012, marijuana tourism numbers for the state are finally starting to become available. According to the state department of tourism, Colorado cannabis tourism has grown by 51 percent since 2014 . The most recent year that numbers are available is 2016; that year, the state saw 6.5 million cannabis tourists visit its ski slopes, mountain vistas, and dispensaries.

For other states like California (which legalized recreational marijuana in 2016), time will tell how many people come to the Golden State for the sole purpose of experiencing cannabis on the West Coast. In Canada, some experts estimate that the yearly tax revenue on legal marijuana sales could run as high as $1 billion .

Marijuana Tourism Activities

For someone planning their first marijuana vacation or traveling to a new cannabis-friendly locale for the first time, it can be challenging to know where to go (especially since the tourism boards in some places avoid promoting cannabis). Numerous entrepreneurs in places with legal recreational marijuana are stepping up to cater to vacationers on the hunt for THC. Whether a visitor prefers touring in a group, checking out the cannabis scene solo, or experiencing the world of legal marijuana with a close group of friends, there are many opportunities for activities, shopping, and more.

One of the easiest ways to plan a marijuana vacation is to schedule it around a marijuana-themed festival. These events vary in size and are a celebration of everything 420-related. Visitors will find music, activities, food, and booths from every seed shop, head shop, rolling paper brand, and dispensary imaginable. Depending on the location and the local laws, attendees can purchase bud, dabs, edibles, and and endless variety of rigs, pipes, papers, oils, and more. Such events also feature activists and offer education on how people can get involved to push legalization efforts forward in places where they’re currently lagging.

Marijuana-themed festivals range from huge international events like CannaFest to smaller festivals taking place all over. This gives travelers the opportunity to plan their vacation around a huge festival or simply check to see if a smaller event is going on wherever they plan to visit.

Group Cannabis Activities

Even if there aren’t any 420 festivals going on, there are still plenty of options for cannabis tourists to enjoy their favorite pastime with like-minded people. A growing part of the marijuana industry consists of budding entrepreneurs creating cannabis tours and getaways that allow visitors from all over to immerse themselves in a marijuana-friendly experience as a group. Among the various types of activities and tours, visitors may find:

Weed Tourism Bus Tours

These party bus tours travel around to to grow facilities, dispensaries, and more in order to teach visitors about the science behind growing and harvesting the plants, the art of crafting the glass pipes and pieces consumers love, and give them a chance to sample and purchase a variety of strains, concentrates, edibles, and more. Most bus tours have a wall installed in between the driver and the passengers, allowing participants to partake in between destinations.

Loopr Cannabis Tour

Loopr offers cannabis-centric bus tours in Denver, Colorado and Los Angeles, California. By utilizing the Loopr app, travelers will use a reliable, organized transit network while enjoying the best the city has to offer. From cannabis tourism, nightlife, dining, and craft brewing, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

By riding with Loopr, travelers can enjoy their tour by engaging in multiple activities while consuming and learning about cannabis and the culture surrounding the plant. The bus ride itself allows travelers to enjoy their cannabis in a comfortable, multimedia environment with vibrant music videos and laser light shows to heighten their experience.

Loopr offers 1-Day, 3-Day, weekly, and monthly passes that allow unlimited boarding and un-boarding as the buses travel on their planned routes throughout their cities. Loopr is unique as it is the only bus tour insured and licensed by the State of Colorado.

The experience begins after downloading the app. The app sends users notifications when their bus is arriving and provides live tracking throughout the tour, allowing users to know exactly where they are throughout their trip and anticipate future destinations. In addition to these services, the app offers exclusive promotions for travelers and the Loopr Shop, where travelers can upgrade their ride and enjoy on-bus refreshments.

While Loopr does not directly provide or sell cannabis to travelers, they are partnered with select dispensaries that offer exclusive discounts on chosen products. Loopr is planning on expanding to other regions throughout the country including California, Massachusetts, and any place where cannabis consumption is legal.

High 5 Cannabis Tours

Portland, Oregon’s High 5 Tours provides fully infused cannabis tour bus experiences, combining an overview of the city’s vibrant weed scene, along with dashes of food, drink, and sightseeing. The tour company, which has recently been featured in The New York Times Travel Section, and is Oregon’s first cannabis bus tour outfit, offers four different cannabis experiences. And, since state and local law permits consumption during the tour, whatever you choose, you get a complete trip. Here are High 5 Tours’ offerings:

  • CannaPDX Adventure: Loads up on High 5 Tours’ Yellow Pot Bus with a group of cannabis-curious every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and get the full Portland marijuana experience. Wine and Weed Tours

A new spin on the weed bus tour, some cannabusinesspeople in California’s wine country are taking things to the next level with wine and weed tours. These kinds of tours allow wine lovers and cannabis connoisseurs to combine their two interests by visiting wineries as well as marijuana dispensaries for tastings of California’s finest wine, as well as its finest cannabis strains.

Marijuana-Themed Activities

In addition to tours, visitors or locals in marijuana-friendly places are likely to find cannabis-themed activities on the schedule around town. These may range from dance parties to art events or cooking classes. “Puff and paint” events allow participants to bring out their artistic side while consuming strains provided by local dispensaries. Cannabis cooking classes teach people how to infuse their own edibles at home – from sweet treats to THC or CBD rich savory dishes.

Cannabis Getaways

For cannabis-centric or cannabis-friendly social clubs, a cannabis getaway is the ideal way to achieve marijuana immersion. These members-only groups often schedule ganja-centric getaways that incorporate 420-friendly lodging, classes, activities, and plenty of downtime to simply relax and puff away.

Solo Activities

For some folks, a marijuana vacation isn’t meant to be enjoyed on a tour; they prefer spending it exploring solo or with a few friends or family members. Here are more individualized activities travelers enjoy when traveling in 420-friendly places.

Marijuana Dispensaries

The most obvious item on any marijuana vacation agenda is local marijuana dispensaries. Those who are new to marijuana might feel intimidated by the idea of walking into a store that’s full of strains, edibles, tinctures, and other products, but cannabis dispensaries have helpful budtenders on staff to help answer questions and guide novices in the right direction.

Before heading out to a specific dispensary, visitors should make sure they can actually purchase their products. Some cannabis dispensaries only cater to medical customers (due to local ordinances or a desired focus by the owner). Those kicking off a Colorado marijuana vacation, for example, should do a bit of research online or call ahead before heading out; this will prevent a two-hour drive over a mountain range only to arrive at a dispensary that turns away everyone without a medical marijuana card. Most dispensaries will indicate this on their website as well as offering a menu of the strains they currently have available.

Cannabis Tourism Dispensary

A marijuana vacation wouldn’t be complete without a visit to at least one cannabis dispensary.

For years, headshops in areas where cannabis was illegal were forced to offer rolling papers, bongs, pipes, and other accoutrements that were sold with a wink, wink, nudge, nudge “for use with tobacco and legal herbs only.” In places with legal recreational marijuana, stores are free to drop the pretense and give folks taking a marijuana vacation a place to peruse a wonderland of items to add to their cannabis toolboxes.

Cannabis Lounges, Clubs, and Coffee Shops

Laws pertaining to public consumption have been a sticking point for many a cannabis vacationer; just because one travels to a place where marijuana is legal doesn’t mean that there are a variety of places where people are allowed to consume it. In many places, it’s illegal to consume cannabis in the same place it’s purchased.

Cannabis coffee shops have long offered tourists in Amsterdam a place to drop in, light up, and relax. In other places throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world, cannabis lounges and clubs provide a way to abide by local public consumption laws while still allowing people a place to enjoy their favorite strains.

A typical cannabis lounge will offer a variety of pipes and glass pieces for public use (with alcohol wipes to sanitize them in between different users). Some request that members bring their own bud, while others might provide bud as a benefit of the membership donation fee. Visitors will typically find comfortable places to sit as well as snacks and drinks to enjoy while they smoke or vape.

Many cannabis clubs and lounges operate on a members-only basis. Depending on local laws, a club or lounge may be restricted to membership of local residents only. It’s always important to check online or call ahead to find out the rules before showing up. Some areas are beginning to issue licenses to allow consumption and purchase of cannabis in the same location; this will create new potential for lounges and even cannabis restaurants.

Challenges to Marijuana Vacations

From the most experienced cannabis connoisseur to those who are venturing into fields of green for the first time, there are several things to be aware of before dipping one’s toes in the water of cannabis tourism. Here are some factors that can take tourists off-guard (or even get them into trouble) if they’re caught unaware.

Payment Methods

Before wandering into a cannabis coffeeshop or dispensary anywhere in the world, travelers must be prepared with multiple ways to pay. In Amsterdam, for example, some coffee shops don’t take cash, while others insist on cash only.

Cash only is the current state of affairs for dispensaries in the U.S., as well – at least until federal cannabis law changes and banks are allowed to handle marijuana-related money. Some dispensaries have an ATM on site, but visitors are advised to come prepared with cash in hand just in case they don’t.

Public Consumption

Although fines and penalties may differ from one place to the next, a general rule of thumb is that even where recreational cannabis is legal, consuming it in public is not. This means that tourists run the risk of getting ticketed or arrested if they’re caught lighting up or vaping in a public park, on a beach, or while sitting on a restaurant patio. People must keep cannabis consumption within the confines of a private property, 420-friendly rental or hotel room, or an establishment with an approved marijuana consumption lounge or area.

Weed Tourism Cannabis Pipe

Cannabis tourism tip: in most places where recreational marijuana is legal, lighting up in public is still against the law.

420-Friendly Lodging

Another difficulty caused by public consumption laws arises when eager marijuana tourists leave a dispensary with their purchases and discover that they have nowhere to legally consume it. Most major hotel chains ban all forms of smoking on their properties.

There are still ways to consume while on a marijuana vacation, however. The growing cannabis tourism industry has given rise to marijuana-friendly hotels – many of them smaller boutiques or so-called “bud and breakfasts” that offer special weed-centric amenities to their guests. Some tour operators have deals with larger hotels to book rooms in which guests are allowed to vaporize cannabis, but many of these hotels won’t discuss this arrangement if customers call and ask directly.

Finally, sites like VRBO and Airbnb are full of 420-friendly rentals that are owned by private individuals. Even if mainstream hotels are out, there are still plenty of options for those who travel to a destination to partake in legal cannabis.

Overconsumption

Cannabis novices can find it easy to overconsume, but even experienced cannabis connoisseurs can be taken off-guard by the strength of many of the products available in dispensaries. This is especially the case with edibles, where someone may consume a serving and not feel the effects for an hour or more later (during which time many people have already eaten another serving or two, unaware that the effects haven’t kicked in yet). Experts advise those who are new to a particular product (or new to cannabis altogether) is to start with a low dose and consume very slowly.

Possession/Travel Laws

Although legalization has opened the floodgates to cannabis tourism in many places, it’s also created the potential for misunderstandings around public possession and traveling with marijuana. How much people are allowed to carry varies wildly from one place to the next; in Amsterdam, the limit is 5 grams per person, while in Canada, it’s 30 grams.

In most U.S. states with legal marijuana, products are required to be carried in the containers in which they were sold. Drivers must avoid traveling with opened cannabis containers in the passenger seat, and consumers should take care not to drive with blood THC levels that are over that state’s legal limit (in Colorado, for instance, people with THC levels over five nanograms can be prosecuted for driving under the influence).

Traveling internationally with cannabis in tow is not allowed. Passengers flying within Canada are allowed to take up to 30 grams of cannabis on board a plane with them. Airport security in the U.S. operates under federal law, so marijuana discovered at security checkpoints there may be confiscated despite the laws at the passenger’s departure or arrival destinations.

Non-Promotion of Cannabis Tourism

Some would-be cannabis tourists are surprised when they visit the websites of tourism boards in cannabis-friendly places only to find little to no mention of legal marijuana or the best places to enjoy it. This is because many tourism boards and destination marketing organizations don’t want to promote cannabis due to federal law and the stigma that still surrounds marijuana. Many of these organizations take steps to inform tourists about the existence of legal recreational cannabis and how to stay safe, but they stop short of actually endorsing it. One example is the Colorado Tourism Board , which simply links to information about marijuana safety from their website.

Cannabis Tourism Dispensary Jars

Despite the boom in people seeking out marijuana vacations, most tourism boards don’t promote dispensaries or other cannabis-related businesses or activities.

Cannabis Tourism: Knowledge Is Power

Whether someone is dreaming of backpacking through Europe with a stopover in Amsterdam, a THC-rich trip to Toronto, or a mellow marijuana vacation on the west coast of the United States, it’s a good idea to do a bit of research before setting out. Travelers should be aware of the marijuana laws in the area they’re planning to travel, as well as researching dispensaries, lounges, and lodging to make sure they don’t encounter any unexpected surprises along the way. As legalization expands and the stigma surrounding recreational marijuana lifts, so will many of the restrictions on it. For now, the best rule of thumb for all cannabis tourism is to know before you go.

What Is Cannabis Tourism?

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

best pot tourism

People plan vacations around all sorts of themes, from outdoor adventure to pop culture fandom and wine. In recent years, a newer travel area has become increasingly popular: cannabis tourism.

“Cannabis tourism can be defined as leisure travel done for the purpose of indulging in marijuana use in areas where it is legal,” Sean Roby, CEO of the cannabis-friendly lodging marketplace Bud and Breakfast , told HuffPost.

“It is akin to the wine industry, where travelers gather from all over the world to check out the vineyards in a specific region,” Roby added. “Similar is the case with cannabis tourism, when people visit the places where pot is legal. They can spend some time there, not just indulging in cannabis consumption but also doing other recreational things during the visit.”

As more states and countries legalize marijuana for medical and recreational use, so grows the number of out-of-town visitors arriving in search of cannabis-based experiences.

So, what should travelers know about cannabis tourism, or “canna-tourism”?

Below, experts break down the offerings, history, controversy and projections for the future.

The cannabis tourism experience

As a growing area of the travel industry, cannabis tourism entails an increasingly wide range of activities and experiences.

“Cannabis travel activities today center around well-being,” said Brian Applegarth , founder of the Cannabis Travel Association International and California Cannabis Tourism Association. “Cannabis is approached by travelers as a tool to improve quality of life and enhance experiences while on vacation. Cannabis visitors to a destination are medical-minded, leisure-orientated, or often a blend of both. Today’s travelers often include cannabis and CBD-infused activities like spa treatments as part of their destination itinerary.”

There are also opportunities to learn about the history of the herb with cannabis tours and educational seminars. From farm stays to apartment rentals and weed-friendly hotels, various lodgings have their own unique offerings as well.

“Our top hosts that are now sold out for three to six months in advance are the ones that have a bud bar, a cannabis yoga class, a professional chef that cooks micro-dosed infused meals for the guests, a CBD-infused masseuse on call, sushi and joint rolling, puff and paint, a zip line over a pinot noir and cannabis field,” Roby said. “We’ve seen them all and our hosts are getting very creative, to say the least.”

At a minimum, a basic Bud and Breakfast host might offer lodging that allows marijuana (though perhaps requires that any smoking take place outside in the yard) and can provide information about nearby dispensaries or other recommendations. These accommodations may appeal to those who simply want a safe place to enjoy cannabis as part of their lifestyle ― or even to medical travelers seeking treatment for themselves or their children.

The platform’s “super hosts,” however, go a step further by curating all-inclusive experiences.

“Really, in our eyes, what defines a ‘super host’ is that they are basically a Wikipedia of all things cannabis,” Roby explained. “They have their finger on the pulse of all related activities/events that go well with cannabis and help the guest really experience the entire stay through the eyes of a local within this genre of travel.”

Increasing legalization of marijuana in different states and countries has led to a boom in cannabis-related travel offerings.

The rise of marijuana-motivated travel

Although cannabis tourism has started getting more attention in recent years, it’s not exactly new.

“I became aware of cannabis travel experiences in Amsterdam in the 1990s ― I remember hearing about The Bulldog and other cannabis cafes and coffee shops that were one-of-a-kind experiences for travelers to enjoy,” Applegarth said. “Going back a bit further with the cannabis travel trend, if you look closely at the history of the Silk Road, the hippie trail, or the surf culture of the 1950s, cannabis was absolutely a central part of it. After California legalized medical cannabis in 1996, the state welcomed patients from around the world seeking help.”

The legalization of recreational marijuana in individual states starting in 2012 helped cannabis tourism grow into a more active sector of the travel industry. In fact, a 2022 report from Forbes estimates that cannabis tourism is a $17 billion industry in its own right.

Cultivar Strategies, Applegarth’s cannabis travel consulting firm, partnered with the hospitality marketing agency MMGY Global to conduct research on the growing field.

“The research revealed that 37% of the active leisure travel audience in the United States are cannabis-experience motivated, up 8% from 2020,” Applegarth explained. “Cannabis, hemp and CBD sales soared during the pandemic as people needed to cope with difficult and unpredictable situations. Today, 70% of Gen Z travelers say that legal access to cannabis while on vacation matters.”

In the U.S., destinations like Oakland, California, have embraced the opportunity to stimulate the local economy through cannabis-motivated travel. The city’s official tourism bureau, Visit Oakland, even developed the Oakland Cannabis Trail to inspire travel plans, support local businesses and keep visitors comfortable and engaged along the way.

“We created a program to capitalize on the growing cannabis travel trend and enrich our visitor experience,” said Peter Gamez, president and CEO of Visit Oakland. “If cannabis is part of one’s lifestyle, visitors want to access products while traveling. This has been good for local dispensaries in Oakland and beyond, as well as product makers across the country. Visitors can now access everything from edibles to health aids to cannabis strands that address different needs and appeal to an array of tastes.”

Bud and Breakfast began in 2002 with a coastal inn in Mendocino, California, and expanded over time to connect a broader number of travelers to weed-friendly accommodations and experiences around the world.

“Because more and more people are using cannabis and wanting it when they travel, this has opened up the door for business owners to fill a gap to accommodate 420 travelers,” Roby said.

Ayanna Lawson believes marijuana-based tourism offers “a lower risk path into a highly volatile industry.” Her company, Front Row Travels, offers curated travel experiences for cannabis users, as well as education for marginalized community members looking to build a brand in cannabis tourism.

“Far too often people try to the enter the industry through dispensary ownership or grow facilities not anticipating the hardships that many owners face,” Lawson explained. Cannabis tourism “is unique in that it touches multiple sectors within the cannabis industry ― farming/agriculture, technology, hospitality, arts/music, etc. The possibilities are endless. Cannabis-friendly destinations such as Mexico, Canada and Uruguay are also generating millions of dollars through cannabis-focused tourism.”

The lingering controversy

Although there’s been a great deal of progress in the understanding and acceptance of marijuana usage, stigma remains.

“Cannabis travel is a controversial topic because it is still misunderstood by many,” Applegarth said. “Fear or judgment about cannabis itself and cannabis travel and tourism activities comes from those who are uninformed, and are often hyperfocused on smoking and the negative impacts from activated THC overconsumption.”

Roby pointed out that the legalization of recreational cannabis only started within the last decade.

“As with alcohol prohibition, it will take a few years to normalize on a social level but one only needs to look at states like Colorado, California, Massachusetts and most other recreational states to see how quickly attitudes change” post-prohibition, with cannabis becoming “a welcome attribute to the local people and economy,” Roby said.

Although there’s been a great deal of progress in the understanding and acceptance of marijuana usage, stigma remains.

Beyond giving travelers the opportunity to relax and have fun, the growing cannabis tourism industry can educate people about the drug and help break down the stigma.

“For decades we have been told misinformation and lies about cannabis and cannabis users,” Lawson said. “But people are starting to unlearn what they’ve been told about cannabis. Cannabis tourism can provide the answers to the questions many have through farm tours, workshops, networking events, infused dinners and more.”

Even in states where the drug is legal, marijuana still feels outside many people’s comfort zones. There’s a lingering sense of taboo as it remains illegal on a federal level.

“Over 30 states have a medical cannabis program and over 15 states have said yes to adult recreational cannabis,” Lawson explained. “Despite an overwhelming majority of U.S. citizens voting to decriminalize cannabis in some capacity, cannabis is still currently listed as a Schedule I drug and is federally prohibited. So, you essentially have an industry that is illegal and legal at the same time. This conflict is wreaking havoc on the cannabis industry.”

The idea of cannabis tourism also presents a stark contradiction when you consider that more than 40,000 Americans are currently estimated to be incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses. It’s tough to reconcile the idea of people languishing behind bars because of weed while others have the privilege to plan vacations around it.

Outside the U.S., there’s further confusion around the implications of recent decisions to decriminalize or legalize marijuana in various countries or regions within them. (And movies like “Midnight Express” and “Return to Paradise” instilled a sense of panic around drugs for many would-be international travelers.)

“A patchwork of complicated laws and regulations regarding recreational cannabis use by overseas tourists means questions remain about the legality of consumption, the transport of cannabis vape pens overseas as well as issues of insurance coverage and health care, during and after travel,” Michael O’Regan wrote in The Conversation in June.

Wherever your travels take you, do your best to research the regulations in place before making marijuana part of the experience.

The future of cannabis tourism

Despite the lingering stigma and legal confusion, industry experts remain optimistic about cannabis tourism.

“Cannabis tourism will continue to grow,” Gamez predicted. “There are ready, willing, and surprisingly affluent cannabis travelers that prefer cannabis experiences while on vacation. Restaurants, attractions, shops, hotels and more will find ways to incorporate this in their daily offerings.”

Applegarth pointed to the trend of “effect pairing cannabis” that’s taking off in certain sectors.

“Like food pairs with wine, cannabis pairs with activities and experiences,” he explained. “Effect pairing is the art of selecting and consuming cannabis in an effort to optimally enhance an activity or experience. An example of this is a cannabis cultivar that when consumed, stimulates appetite and sharpens the palate prior to enjoying a Michelin star meal while on vacation.”

Applegarth also believes cannabis tourism will continue to center around wellness-related experiences, both in a medical or leisure travel sense.

“Cannabis, hemp and CBD will continue to intersect with culinary, spa, and beyond,” Applegarth said. “For altered state THC-rich cannabis travel experiences, ‘mindset and setting’ will increasingly become an area of focus and high-touch curation, playing up sensory experiences.”

Unlike wine-related travel, which is limited to specific regions that specialize in quality production, cannabis tourism has wider geographic potential.

“Cannabis is everywhere around the world in urban locations, rural locations and everything in between, which means it will exponentially grow much larger,” Roby said. “And there is no shoulder season with cannabis tourism. Our hosts have cannabis activities all year round.”

And with countries like Germany moving to legalize cannabis on a federal level, Roby believes the market potential is endless. He noted that Bud and Breakfast had seen a triple increase in revenue every year until the pandemic slowdown and has finally returned to pre-pandemic levels of record growth.

“Cannabis tourism is just getting started and will grow into the hundreds of billions of dollars within a few years time,” Roby said. “This will occur in conjunction with nations around the world developing compassionate and rational policies towards cannabis and its use.”

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you again for a fabulous tour. It was obvious that everyone had a great time. I don't know if you knew but Gertrude is a cancer survivor thanks to cannabis. Thank you for a wonderful day. I wish you great success!

Being from Australia where cannabis is still illegal this was a great experience for my friend and I. The guides were fantastic, there was weed EVERYWHERE and the tour bus is awesome. We would highly recommend this tour to anybody that is looking to have a heap of fun and we will be spreading the word back home! The BEST day!!!!!!

I just returned from the best vacation I have ever had. Mike and Heidi were awesome! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I did the whole tour package which included the tours, cooking class and painting class, They were all so enjoyable and I actually learned something, I would definitely do them all again. The tours were SO MUCH FUN! It was great being with other people from all over the country who were looking for the same experience I was. The hotel they booked me at was fantastic, great customer service and location! I'm already planning my next trip in April and will be booking through them!. HIGHly recommend!! :)

Wow. Great experience. I loved every bit of it. The tour staff was awesome. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and down to earth. Every time I visit Denver I will go again. You get to experience every side of this new industry in style. It's really an experience I believe everyone should have. And the price is well deserved and beats the competition hands down. Can't wait for my next trip.

I highly recommend this company to anyone. Fantastic on the customer service side of things which is most important to us. The tour was incredible and well worth the purchase price. We definitely will use them again in the future.

I would recommend this to anyone going to Denver Colorado looking to have a good time and learned a lot of helpful tips

EPIC! Mike helped us out by referring his personal babysitter Noelle to my husband & I. She was awesome with our young (wild) boys. Mike & his team ROCKED! I have to admit, it was one of the most fun days of my life! I think the coolest thing was the camaraderie on the bus! IF you're traveling to Denver, this tour is a *MUST*!

Best trip ever had a blast lots of good people and very fun would recommend must do if in Colorado.

Best trip ever!!! Thx guys you made my 420 weekend a blast!

Thank you for the chance to take a tour and wealth of knowledge about cannabis.

Best day ever. Loving all classes and fabulous tour w/medicine man. Laynie Ganja has been most awesome host and detailed info. I'll be back.

Leslie Allison is so damn awesome at what she does!! I have taken both her pincushion and pamper class and both were fun, easy to follow and informative. Will definitely be back

This was a really fun experience! The guides were super fun and up beat! I do have one suggestion, however. The glass blowing demonstration was really interesting and I learned a lot at the grows. Thanks so much for the experience! It was super fun!

This has been a fun experience and very informative. The glass blowing presentation is a nice touch to this tour. The 420 party bus is the cheery on top. I would definitely recommend this everyone who's coming into Colorado for a visit

Indulge in (Legal) Weed at These 8 U.S. Cannabis Cafés

The recreational cannabis industry is budding across the country—but the issue of where to enjoy marijuana publicly is still a work in progress..

Green booths, walls, and tables at Rise Mundelein Lounge, with white and green check tile floor

Chicago-based interior designer Sasha Adler created the eye-catching space at Rise Mundelein Lounge in Illinois.

Courtesy of Rise Mundelein Lounge

Envision this: You’re at a bar, but the energy is decidedly relaxed—even a bit posh. Instead of throwing back shots, you’re sharing a vape pen or tasting a cannabis confection from a local bakery—maybe there’s a latte involved. There’s trivia night going on in one corner, in the same area of the lounge where comedy night was happening last week. You can ask a cannabis aficionado (or “budtender”) about a new type of flower at the counter, or even order table service (complete with rolling papers) from your pre-reserved booth. And no, you aren’t in Amsterdam.

Marijuana prohibition’s slow but promising lift in the United States is making room for a wave of “public cannabis consumption spaces,” also known as “social consumption lounges” (SCLs) or cannabis cafés, more casually. Currently only 12 states allow for on-site cannabis lounges: Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, and New York.

But it’s predicted that the legalization and marijuana café trend will explode in the coming years as state laws continue to change. Ahead of the curve, the San Francisco Bay Area currently has the largest number of SCLs in the country, but more are cropping up in other areas of the United States as well.

Ahead are eight stylish, comfortable, welcoming spaces for a new kind of recreational marijuana happy hour, with some pointers and suggestions from Erik Knutson, CEO of Keef Brands . Not only is Knutson the force behind Keef (known as a “ pioneering developer, producer, and distributor of award-winning cannabis-infused beverages, edibles, oils, and more ”) but he’s also a founding board member of the American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp (ATACH) and the Cannabis Trade Federation (CTF).

1. Rise Mundelein Lounge

  • Location: 1325 Armour Blvd., Mundelein, Illinois | Find on Google Maps

Rise Mundelein Lounge opened in 2022, an hour’s drive north of Chicago, and was the first cannabis consumption lounge to open east of the Mississippi. The chic, jungle green lounge was dreamed up by famed Chicago interior designer Sasha Adler. Here, guests can choose from a wide variety of flowers, vapes, pre-rolls, edibles, extracts, and tinctures, as well as any gear they might need. Online shopping and curbside pickup are also available. In September, Green Thumb Industries (the parent company that owns Rise) hosts one of the original legal cannabis consumption music festivals in town, “ The Miracle in Mundelein .”

2. Stoned Pizza

  • Location: 235 East Fourth St., New York City | Find on Google Maps

NYC is full of slice shops, but this one is a bit different : All the pizza is infused with marijuana. As is most of the food. The five-course menu—which requires a reservation and is a $120 prix fixe—includes salad, garlic knots, pizza, crispy chicken lollipops, and gelato. And if the robust menu isn’t enough, guests are welcome to bring their own edibles and flowers to enjoy. The dinners are meant to be a communal experience where guests can enjoy a “sensory symphony.”

3. Wake-N-Bakery

  • Location: 3508 N. Broadway, Chicago, Illinois | Find on Google Maps

Self-described as Chicago’s original cannabis-infused bakery and coffee shop, Wake-N-Bakery has an extensive menu of THC-infused goodies. From the more expected (Americanos and iced teas) to the downright fun (like Snoop’s Dream, a caramel Italian espresso drink that pairs well with the weed-infused muffins), this is a spot where you’ll want to linger. There are four locations peppered around the city; the one in the city’s Lakeview neighborhood is within walking distance of Lake Michigan. You can also pick up pre-rolls, edibles, and other cannabis products from Wake-N-Bakery.

4. Moe Greens

  • Location: 1276 Market St., San Francisco, California | Find on Google Maps

About a block away from X HQ in San Francisco’s tech-centric mid-Market Street neighborhood sits a whimsical yet sophisticated midcentury-modern space, with rich olive hues and gold Sputnik chandeliers: Moe Greens . “This is an upscale cannabis lounge that brings together all kinds of people and consumers to relax in their booths and experience a wide variety of products, including infused beverages,” says Knutson.

Words of advice from Knutson: “The lounge gets really busy, so be sure to make a reservation!” Like a club, VIP booths require advanced reservations, though there are also two large “get together” lounges that are first-come, first-served. To enter, you just need to buy something from the dispensary.

5. The Studio Cannabis Smoking Lounge & Weed Dispensary

  • Location: 8625 Santa Monica Blvd., 2nd Floor, West Hollywood, California | Find on Google Maps

Up a flight of stairs above the Artist Tree Cannabis Dispensary , you’ll find a beautifully designed (and calming) lounge serving up snacks and canna-cocktails. As one of the area’s first cannabis shops, the focus here is on using marijuana as a way to boost creativity, and you’ll certainly leave the space feeling inspired. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available, and you can reserve a table ahead of time. There are also plenty of events, like a “Puff Puff Paint” night and a coworking session/writer’s café in the afternoon.

6. Root’d in the 510

  • Location: 4444 Telegraph Ave., Oakland, California | Find on Google Maps

Located in the heart of Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood, Root’d in the 510 cannabis lounge has it all: board games, big-screen TVs, and even video games and pinball across 7,000 square feet. There’s also a Root’d Combustion Lounge, adjacent to the main lounge area, where guests can smoke. Root’d hosts plenty of events, including art shows featuring locals’ work and DJ sets.

7. The Summit Private Lounge

  • Location: 116 Water St., Worcester, Massachusetts | Find on Google Maps

Drive an hour west of Boston to find the Summit Private Lounge in Worcester. This upscale bar and lounge offers an elevated yet rustic aesthetic to enjoy cannabis tastings while taking in live music or playing video games.

Rent or buy a smoking device (like a piece or a bong), and take advantage of the cold drinks, snacks, and coffee on offer. There are bimonthly events, paint nights—and yes, video games—all available to anyone with a membership or guest pass. The idea of a “members-only” club might sound pricey and exclusive, but the Summit makes its social cannabis experience accessible with a modest $30 per month or $10 per visit fee.

8. The Coffee Joint

  • Location: 1130 Yuma Ct., Denver, Colorado | Find on Google Maps

Located next door to a dispensary, Denver’s the Coffee Joint may look like a run-of-the-mill beatnik coffeehouse, but in 2018 it became the first place you could publicly (and legally) consume cannabis in Colorado . . . but you still can’t smoke. (Smoking marijuana in public is illegal in Colorado.) In addition to offering a relaxed environment for vaping, enjoying cannabis-infused food and drink, and sampling THC concentrates, the Coffee Joint offers lots of regular events, including movie screenings and meditation practices.

How We Chose the Best THC Cartridges

THC carts provide a flavorful way to enjoy the psychoactive effects and therapeutic benefits of THC without smoking weed. We aim to recommend only the best products to our readers. Here are the factors that we considered when making our THC cartridge selections.

Quality Control

Product quality is essential to us, which is why we selected only those THC vape carts that have been third-party lab-tested to confirm purity, potency, and quality. All of our featured carts are made with top-quality cannabinoids and pre-filled for optimal convenience.

We know that everyone has different needs and preferences, which is why we strive to include a variety of different strains, potencies, and flavors in our list. From live resin and delta-8 to sativas and indicas , there’s something for everyone among our picks.

Vendor Reputation

Our recommendations come from some of the leading weed brands in the industry. These brands have demonstrated track records of providing stellar customer service, adhering to high production standards, and manufacturing top-quality vape pens and hemp products.

How to Find the Best THC Cartridges for You

Finding the right THC oil cartridges for an authentic cannabis experience can be difficult. As you’re shopping, keep the following considerations in mind to find the best weed carts for you.

Desired Effects

Think about what you hope to gain from vaping and choose a cart that offers the effects you’re looking for. The Durban Poison strain is known for its clear-headed benefits. Indicas are ideal for relaxation and evening use, and sativas are perfect for a morning energy boost. Some carts blend THC with other cannabinoids for balanced and varied benefits .

Strain and Flavor

Vape carts come in a wide variety of popular cannabis strains and flavor choices, including White Widow, Blackberry Kush, and Ice Cream Cake. Each of these cannabis strains offers different effects, so be sure to research them to find one that caters to your needs.

Device Compatibility

Not all weed carts are compatible with all vape pens . Before making a purchase, check to ensure your cart will work with your preferred vaping device.

What is THC?

One of many cannabinoids, THC is the primary psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant. THC is used in many different types of cannabis products, and it’s responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis use. There are various strains of THC, each with unique properties.

Is THC safe?

When used responsibly, THC is safe for most individuals. However, users should be aware of some possible side effects, such as nausea and respiratory irritation. Those who are pregnant or nursing should avoid using THC, and individuals who have health conditions or who are taking medications should consult a healthcare provider before cannabis use.

How much THC should I take?

Consumption amount depends on individual tolerance. New users should start with a low dose of a low-potency product and increase as needed to achieve the desired effects. Seasoned cannabis users will likely prefer a high-potency cart.

Do THC cartridges expire?

Yes, even the highest-quality THC carts have an expiration date. Under ideal storage conditions, most cannabis oil carts retain optimal concentrations of cannabinoids and other compounds up to 12 months after the manufacturing date, so don’t wait too long to use that THC cart!

What are the benefits of THC vape pens?

A THC vape pen offers a convenient alternative to smoking. These vaping pens come with weed carts and are pre-filled with cannabis oil, so you don’t need to worry about rolling papers, bowls, or messy buds. They deliver fast effects and are easier to travel with.

THC carts come in many flavors, strains, and potency options, offering a wide range of taste profiles, benefits, and experiences. Many cannabis oil carts also contain other cannabinoids or compounds, such as botanical terpenes, for an entourage effect.

Not only is the vapor from THC oil flavorful, but it also emits less odor than classic cannabis for enhanced discretion. Furthermore, vaping is less harsh on the lungs than traditional smoking, making it a healthier alternative for those who prefer inhalation methods for cannabis consumption.

Available in a wide array of different cannabis strains and flavor choices, THC cartridges are revolutionizing the way cannabis enthusiasts enjoy the potential benefits of THC. With their tasty vapor and portable designs, it’s little wonder why so many are making the switch to vape carts. Whether you’re just dipping your toe in the vaping pool or are a seasoned swimmer, our list of top carts offers something for everyone!

Grown adult only eats chips on holiday so spends £300 taking British ‘delicacies’ with him

One of the greatest things about travelling is tasting local delicacies and experimenting with new foods. But that’s not the case for extremely fussy eater John Phillips.

Whenever he used to go abroad, the 40-year-old would eat nothing but chips. His wife Rebecca has now got so fed up with it, they pack a separate suitcase to bring his own food along. He even takes a grill so he can cook bacon butties.

Last year the couple, from Stoke-on-Trent, went to Egypt and, despite it being a £1,400 all-inclusive holiday, it cost them an extra £300 to take a bag filled with:

  • 21 Pot Noodles
  • 86 packets of crisps
  • Two packs of bacon
  • Pack of 30 sausages
  • Cans of tuna
  • Block of cheese
  • Brown sauce
  • 30 Club biscuits
  • 16 bags of sweets
  • Breakfast bars

Rebecca, 29, who often has to eat alone as a result of John’s fussiness, said she isn’t annoyed at the extra cost, she just wants to be sure he is eating.

She said: ‘I go on holiday and I eat anything but he just won’t. He’s always been that way.

‘He’s just so fussy with his food, even in the UK. It’s just easier to eat in than go out for food, he’s always been like it.’

HUSBAND AND WIFE REBECCA PHILLIPS, 29, AND JOHN PHILLIPS, 40

John says he’s always preferred ‘good old-fashioned English’ grub over anything else.

He said: ‘I like my home comforts when I go abroad. So instead of searching for decent food, I’ll just take my own food with me.

‘I’ve always been a fussy eater, I don’t eat much veg at all. I like chips, sausage, and gravy — that sort of stuff.

‘A full suitcase will normally last us but we can run out a day or two before. It’s an expenditure but you normally spend money on your weekly shop anyway when you’re back in England.’

THE COLLECTION OF SNACKS JOHN PHILLIPS, 40, BRINGS ON HIS HOLIDAYS

When asked why he pays for all-inclusive when he doesn’t eat anything, he responded: ‘Free beer’.

Rebecca said: ‘When we first met and we first started going away, he would just eat chips. Then we started taking stuff on holiday with us and it just accumulated.

‘It doesn’t annoy me. I love food and I love cooking food so the fact he’s happy with something he’ll enjoy, I prefer that.

‘It was more me who said “let’s take this [on holiday]” and it just accumulated. I wouldn’t enjoy the holiday if he wasn’t eating.

‘He will only eat the food we’ve brought. If he comes down to the hotel restaurant with me, he might pick at some bread.
