When Tom Cruise sang on live TV and he was amazing

Tom Cruise singing on Jimmy Fallon's show

By Tom Eames

Facebook share

Tom Cruise is one of the world's greatest film stars, and it turns out he's a fantastic live performer too.

In 2015, the Top Gun: Maverick actor appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in the States, and shocked the audience with his impressive command of the stage.

  • Simon Cowell finally sang on the Got Talent stage and he was incredible
  • Tom Cruise fought for 'wingman' Val Kilmer to star in Top Gun sequel after his battle with cancer

OK, he wasn't actually singing, but rather taking part in the Lip Sync Battle segment of the show, miming along with The Weeknd's 'Can't Feel My Face', but he was particularly great at it.

Watch the clip below:

Tom impressed the audience and Jimmy with his performance, which he followed up by lip-syncing to Meat Loaf 's 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light'.

Even The Weeknd himself was amazed, tweeting about the show afterwards:

can't believe @TomCruise is singing my song. @jimmyfallon *** you're the MAN for this one. #tomcruisetomcruise ||| https://t.co/xVFZSkYCCx — The Weeknd (@theweeknd) July 28, 2015

But it's not like Tom can't sing at all. He's belted out the likes of 'Great Balls of Fire' in Top Gun , 'Free Fallin'' in Jerry Maguire and 'Addicted to Love' in Cocktail .

And of course, in 2012, he starred as stadium rock legend Stacy Jaxx in the musical Rock of Ages , where he convincingly performed various '80s anthems like 'Wanted Dead or Alive' and 'Pour Some Sugar on Me'.

Tom Cruise has just experienced the most successful film of his career, with Top Gun: Maverick grossing over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office.

Tom Cruise Pulls Off the Impossible in Unbelievable ‘Lip Sync Battle’ With Jimmy Fallon (Video)

“Rogue Nation” actor finds his true calling on the “Tonight Show” as he recreates famous “Top Gun” scene with late-night host

Giving his best performance since he serenaded Kelly McGillis in a bar in “Top Gun,” Tom Cruise dominated the “Lip Sync Battle” against Jimmy Fallon on Monday’s “Tonight Show.”

“Tonight I am facing off against one of the biggest movie stars of all time,” the late-night host announced, before Cruise came out in force.

“My first song has been on the top of the charts all summer long, it’s the song of the summer,” the “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” action star said as he took the mic for The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Cruise didn’t need any of the costumes or props that have become commonplace on the Spike spin-off show, as he expertly channeled the band with intense facial expressions and slick hand gestures.

Fallon’s attempt at a comeback with the Rolling Stones fell on deaf ears as Cruise dominated the competition.

He went on to recall nights of steamy teenage romantic make-out sessions as he took off his jacket, rolled up his shirt sleeves and jumped into Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” — flawlessly miming to both sets of vocals.

“You did a one-man duet! I’ve never seen that done before,” Fallon marveled.

The “Tonight Show” host then went on to steal Cruise’s signature song right from under him as Fallon took on the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and told the audience “this one goes out to Goose.”

Fortunately, helpful Cruise offered a hand with the backup vocals to recreate the iconic scene from his 1986 role.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” hits theaters on Friday, July 31.

“The Tonight Show” airs at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.

Tom Cruise scorched The Tonight Show stage Monday night during an epic “Lip Sync Battle” that left host Jimmy Fallon wide-eyed and slack-jawed. The Mission Impossible actor’s turn was so good, he at one point relegated Fallon from the role of host to glorified coat rack.

Cruise kicked off the game with a rendition of The Weeknd’s summer smash, “I Can’t Feel My Face,” that was so sultry and smooth its creator offered this praise on   Twitter , “I can’t believe @TomCruise is singing my song. @jimmyfallon you’re the MAN for this one… that shit got me hype… lol I can’t lie.”

The Weeknd was an equal opportunity praiser, tweeting  to rival host Jimmy Kimmel, “you’re still my boy too.”

The kind words were ultimately deserved as Fallon settled into his rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Undercover of the Night.” Already well-versed in mimicking Mick Jagger’s mannerisms , Fallon pursed his lips and strutted like a frantic peacock, but had to nix the frontman’s ostentatious hand claps due to his bandaged finger .

So ... what's with this rumor that j.d. vance had sex with a couch, the inside story of the 'grooming' allegations against ava kris tyson, elon musk's daughter fires back after he says she was 'killed' by 'woke mind virus'.

For his follow-up, Cruise feigned the most obvious selection, Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” He even slid up to the mic to the opening piano stabs like he did in Risky Business , before grinning at Fallon and admitting, “That wouldn’t be fair, would it?” Instead, Cruise made Fallon hold his jacket while he performed Meat Loaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” with the melodramatic theatricality — hands to the heavens, down on his knees, the mic stand haphazardly discarded several feet away  — only a trained actor could muster.

Fallon essentially ceded the contest after that, but rules are rules, and the host dutifully performed his final song, the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” — the second most obvious choice from the Cruise oeuvre . Fallon fittingly dedicated the song to Goose from Top Gun and insisted Cruise join him. The pair then proceeded to croon the track and compete for the charms of a lucky lady in the front row, alternately kissing her hand, blowing her hair and rubbing her face.

James Corden and Tom Cruise perform on ‘The Lion King’ stage for their final ‘Late Late Show’ skit

THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN

Tom Cruise has gone from “All the Right Moves” to all the right notes.

Cruise joined James Corden April 27 on the final episode of his “The Late Late Show” by performing alongside him in a production of “The Lion King” at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

The bit opened with Corden recruiting a reluctant Cruise to take part in the show, noting that the two of them had pulled off some amazing stunts together when Cruise has appeared on the program.

“In the eight years that I’ve hosted ‘The Late Late Show,’ we’ve been skydiving, you’ve flown me upside down, and today you’re going to enter my world, alright?” Corden said.

Corden then introduced Cruise to the "Lion King" cast and the pair did some exercises to prepare, including dancing to the “Mission: Impossible” theme song and using some of the character costumes to recreate the famous “You can’t handle the truth” scene from “A Few Good Men.”

THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN

Cruise also gave a spirited pre-show speech to the cast. Then, the curtain went up and Corden and Cruise walked onto the stage from the back of the theater. After they finished their part, Cruise thought they were done, but Corden rallied him to keep it up.

The duo then returned to the stage, with the curtain lifting up to show them, prompting the audience to hoot and holler and in delight.

“Hakuna Matata. What a wonderful phrase,” Corden, as Timon, said.

“Hakuna Matata, ain’t no passing craze,” Cruise, as Pumbaa, half-sang, half-spoke.

THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN

They then launched into a song and dance of “Hakuna Matata” while the audience cheered and Cruise later tried to hit a high note belting out the line, “When I was a young warthog!”

They wrapped up their song to a thunderous round of applause and a standing ovation from some people in the audience. The crowd went nuts again when they came out to take their bows after the performance ended.

Later, the two had a funny moment when Corden confronted Cruise about how he’ll “find yourself another late night host” to promote his future projects.

THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN

“When ‘Mission: Impossible 12’ comes out, you’re not going to think of me. You’re going to be off base jumping with Bowen Yang,” he said in mock anger.

“I’m not the one turning my back on everything that we have, everything that we’ve created,” Cruise fired back. “This is your last show. You did this to us.”

Cruise then went off to have drinks with some of “The Lion King” cast, but as he sat at a table, he began to sing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” with Corden still sitting in the theater, joining in for an unlikely duet. A montage of their moments on “The Late Late Show” played on the screen while they reunited on top of a building, continuing to sing.

THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN

As Corden apologized for their tiff, Cruise told him to "shut up" while referencing “Jerry Maguire.”

“You had me at hello,” he said.

“I love you, Tom,” Corden said.

“I know," Cruise said, as he walked away to a waiting helicopter while the “Mission: Impossible” music played, leaving Corden stranded on the roof.

TOM CRUISE Talks About Singing For DEF LEPPARD (Video)

During this past Friday's (June 8) visit to NBC 's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" , actor Tom Cruise spoke to host Jay Leno about singing in the movie adaptation of "Rock Of Ages" , which hits U.S. theaters June 15.

According to Cruise , he was preparing to perform DEF LEPPARD 's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" when he found out the day before filming that members of the legendary English rock band would be stopping by to listen.

"I'm just trying to honor you," Cruise told DEF LEPPARD before singing their smash hit.

"We played the whole song, and most of the crew was watching [ DEF LEPPARD ] for their reaction," Cruise told Leno .

"The band's lead singer [ Joe Elliott ] walks over and points at me, and I can't say what he said ... some sort of obscenity, and they had us perform it again for them. They were very generous," Cruise added.

Watch video footage of Cruise 's appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" below.

Tom Cruise stars in "Rock Of Ages" as Stacee Jaxx , an aging musician whose glory days are long past.

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen recently told VH1 Classic Rock Nights that Cruise "was a super-lovely guy" when they met. Collen added, "I was so impressed because he hadn't sung before and he had vocal lessons. He was literally doing five hours a day, five days a week, like truly real, getting in there and doing it. And we saw him and he was amazing, it was like Iggy Pop meets someone else and he's in great shape and it was like, 'What!?!' It was surreal, but he really pulls it off and it was like he's a total rock star."

The soundtrack to "Rock Of Ages" , which showcases popular rock songs from the '70s and '80s, features the cast — Tom Cruise , Catherine Zeta-Jones , Russell Brand and Julianne Hough — singing some of the greatest hits of the "hair-band" era, is likely to sell between 12,000 and 15,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to industry web site Hits Daily Double . The estimate was based on one-day sales reports compiled after the record arrived in stores on June 5 via WaterTower Music .

"Rock Of Ages: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" features the following track listing:

01. Paradise City (Tom Cruise) 02. Sister Christian / Just Like Paradise/Nothin' But a Good Time (Diego Boneta) 03. Juke Box Hero / I Love Rock 'N' Roll (Diego Boneta) 04. Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Catherine Zeta-Jones) 05. Waiting For A Girl Like You Diego Boneta 06. More Than Words / Heaven (Diego Boneta) 07. Wanted Dead Or Alive (Julianne Hough) 08. I Want To Know What Love Is (Malin Akerman) 09. I Wanna Rock (Diego Boneta) 10. Pour Some Sugar On Me (Tom Cruise) 11. Harden My Heart (Julianne Hough) 12. Shadows Of The Night / Harden My Heart (Julianne Hough) 13. Here I Go Again (Diego Boneta) 14. Can't Fight This Feeling (Russell Brand) 15. Any Way You Want It (Julianne Hough) 16. Undercover Love (Diego Boneta) 17. Every Rose Has Its Thorn (Diego Boneta) 18. Rock You Like A Hurricane (Julianne Hough) 19. We Built This City / We're Not Gonna Take It (Russell Brand) 20. Don't Stop Believin' (Diego Boneta)

In a recent interview with Playboy.com , Cruise stated about his first attempt at singing, "I knew I could hold a note. I sang in a glee club when I was 14 years old and in a high school musical. But I never had a singing lesson. No one ever taught me how to use my voice.

It was previously reported that Cruise was preparing for his role by training with Axl Rose 's vocal coach. "He was an opera singer who taught me how to control my voice," Cruise said. "It's like learning a new sport or a skill for a character. I had to find out how to move air through the vocal cords and where to place it in my head, in the chest. It's something you have to do every day to strengthen your voice."

Adam Anders , executive music producer for the film and album, recently told The Hollywood Reporter about Cruise 's vocal skills, "He had never sung in his life. He was like, 'I need to know that I can do this before I sign on.' So I went to his house to hear him sing and even though he was completely green as a singer, his vocal cords were amazing. He had this voice that blew me away. It was the most powerful voice I had ever heard. So loud. He could do anything and go as high as we wanted. It was like a kid discovering he had a new toy. I left there super-pumped knowing that not only could we make him pass as a singer in the movie, but we would blow people away with what he could do."

He added, "[ Tom 's] confidence kept growing as we worked together. I think he started off a little nervous, as anybody would who has never done this, but he just bought it 110%. He works harder than anybody I've ever met in my life. By the end of this movie, the guy was just phenomenal. I remember telling him, 'You're a singer!'"

"Rock Of Ages" also stars Alec Baldwin , Russell Brand , Catherine Zeta-Jones , Paul Giamatti , Malin Akerman and many others.

Watch Tom Cruise Lip Sync Meat Loaf And More On The Tonight Show

tom cruise singing video

Before the world at large gets a chance to see Tom Cruise hanging off of airplanes and diving into underwater action sequences in MIssion Impossible: Rogue Nation , we got to see him at his low-budget finest on The Tonight Show as he took on Jimmy Fallon in a battle of mostly outstanding lip syncing. Meat Loaf. Rolling Stones. The Weeknd . It’s all here.

Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise is undeniably a superstar entertainer, and it doesn’t take much to set off the charm-oozing, and not even keeping him quiet can stop the Cruise-inator (or a cooler nickname), as that one scene in Top Gun originally proved. But that song comes later. First, Cruise shows off his modern side by embracing one of the biggest songs of 2015, The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.”

And while it’s an enjoyable take on the song, things don’t get really real until Fallon kicks off The Rolling Stones’ “Undercover of the Night.” My mind started wondering what a Mick Jagger biopic would look like with Fallon in the lead, which is a thought that previously would have cured me of “good dreams” and “a non-upset stomach,” but now I think I might like it. He’s got the in-your-camera’s-face moves, and he didn’t even laugh at himself the entire time. It probably takes more than that, but still.

”the

Back to Cruise, who knows a thing or two about rocking out from the film Rock of Ages. He brings it all back to his youth, when things that we’ll just assume are too hot for TV happened in parking lots, and he unleashes his dual personalities for Meat Loaf’s anthem “Paradise by the Dashboard Light.” Even though Fallon might not have known what Cruise was going to pick, the camera operators sure did, and this self-duet was captured perfectly.

”the

And now I’m praying for the end of time, so I can have enough time to focus on my own lip syncing skills. But regardless of how much practice I get, there’s no way I could top the duo’s performance of the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling,” a track that I’m certain millions of dude in the 1980s (codenamed Maverick, of course) used to creep on women in bars. Fallon and Cruise head into the audience, where they silently serenade a lucky/unlucky woman in the front row. If this isn’t magic, then magic doesn’t exist.

”the

I don’t know that Tom Cruise would ever make his way over to Spike’s Lip Sync Battle , but Fallon needs to grease some wheels on making that happen. Until then, we’ve got our fingers crossed that Bob the Musical turns into a reality soon. What will The Tonight Show get into next? Find out every weeknight on NBC.

Top songs: a guide to Tom Cruise singing cheesy tunes in movies

Might as well face it, Tom Cruise is addicted to belting out an off-key classic in his films. Here's a quick guide to some of his most memorable – and more forgettable – moments on the mic

tom cruise singing video

Photos: Alamy/Collage: The Big Issue

Ace fighter pilot, champion stock car racer, secret agent extraordinaire, barman at TGI Fridays: Tom Cruise has lived exciting lives which we mere mortals can only dream of through his blockbuster acting roles. And yet, from watching the vertically challenged sexy scientologist’s movies over the years, I can’t help but sense that his greatest ambition in life has never been fully realised.

I still haven’t seen Top Gun: Maverick – and I understand he judiciously leaves the theme song to Lady Gaga – but if it doesn’t feature a scene in which Cruise wonkily if gamely sings his little heart out to some sort of vintage rock’n’roll tune then he is selling us all and indeed himself short. The man clearly just wants to sing!

Not content merely packing the soundtracks of his movies with hit songs that can have taken anywhere between three and seven minutes to write – be it Take a Look Around , Limp Bizkit’s butthurt riff on a Lalo Schifrin TV theme classic from 2000’s Mission: Impossible 2 , or Paul McCartney’s fantastically lazy Vanilla Sky from 2001’s film of the same name (sample lyric: “Tonight you fly so high up/In the vanilla sky” ) – Cruise has on many a memorable occasion grabbed the mic himself, only rarely crashing and burning in the process. Shake your nerves and rattle your brain, with a short history of Tom Cruise singing in films.

Great Balls of Fire  – Top Gun (1986)

Whether it’s spectacular aerial dogfights or a very homoerotic beach volleyball match, Cruise’s breakout action classic is full of memorable scenes, including not just one but two where he sings. The best is of course when Mav and Goose and their respective better halves are drunk in a bar, and Goose is banging away at an upright piano with his young son perched on top, and the two BFFs are going ballistic howling Jerry Lee Lewis’s horndog anthem like a right pair of flaming testes. Unbearably wholesome content.

Addicted to Love  – Cocktail (1988)

It’s hard to believe it happened not long after Top Gun , but Cruise’s arguably worst-ever film saw him play a flair bartender at a MOR American chain restaurant, serving up extravagantly made boozes with often sexy results. His credentials as the money-maker shakin’ lothario who can also do you a decent margarita are burnished by a scene in which the erotic mixologist starts ad-libbing to Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love behind the bar while a woman stares at him longingly, whether smitten or perhaps just wondering when the hell she’s getting her drink.

Free Fallin’  – Jerry Maguire (1996)

He’s a cocky American sports agent just been binned from his job, she’s a naive and let’s face it desperate secretary and single mum (played by the future multiple Oscar-winning Renée Zellweger). Their relationship makes no sense whatsoever and is actually quite tragic. But watch this much-overrated romcom anyway for the always enjoyable scene where Jerry’s driving off from doing what he thinks is a career-saving deal, searching the radio for a song to match his ecstatic mood, before finally settling on Tom Petty’s 1989 classic Free Fallin’ . Cue Cruise frantically car singing along at the top of his voice with no-one’s-listening aplomb.

Little Deuce Coupe  – War of the Worlds (2005)

“The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, but still they come!” OK, so sadly Cruise didn’t have a go at singing Jeff Wayne’s 1978 funky prog-rock opera based on HG Wells’ Victorian era proto-sci-fi frightener. But in playing the unlikely part of the deadbeat dad in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 blockbuster movie adaptation, he does have a pretty sweet moment when, searching his mind in vain for a lullaby to sing his terrified daughter, from somewhere he comes up with The Beach Boys’ 1963 hot-rod rock ode, sung in a fragile reedy voice with tears in his eyes.

Various songs  – Rock of Ages (2012)

Perhaps we should be more careful what we wish for. Back in 2012, Cruise really did get to fulfil many of his obvious rock star fantasies by joining the ensemble cast of a film based on a popular glam-rock Broadway jukebox musical. The actor took lessons with Axl Rose’s vocal coach to get up to scratch for his role as brooding superstar Stacey Jaxx, and ended up singing surprisingly passable lead vocals on various songs including Guns N’ Roses’ Paradise City , Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead or Alive and Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar on Me . Luckily the film tanked at the box office, and music’s loss remains acting’s gain.

Tom Cruise certainly pulls off the look of the '80s rockers he's fashioned after, but his vocals aren't as on point.

The audio: Tom Cruise is, apparently, "hot sticky sweet." But can he sing? Ever since the Mission: Impossible star was cast in the upcoming musical Rock of Ages , based on the jukebox Broadway show of the same name, critics wondered whether he had the vocal chops to pull off the role. In the film, out June 15, Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx, a bare-chested, chaps-wearing rocker in the mold of Poison's Bret Michaels, who is tasked with belting out rock and roll classics like "Paradise City" and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The first audio clip of the actor singing the Def Leppard track "Pour Some Sugar On Me" was released Tuesday. (Listen to it below.) Cruise claims that the hair band already gave his performance its stamp of approval .

The reaction: Cruise may look the part of the long-haired, tatted-up rocker in the preview images we've seen, says Mary Ouellette at Loudwire , but his vocals are too Broadway. He lacks Def Leppard's "imperfections and reckless abandon," and sounds "more like he's singing a showtune than a rock anthem." What vocals? says Billy Dukes at Ultimate Classic Rock . He's drowned out by the ramped-up background production. While Cruise's version will bring the classic track to a new audience, "it fails to separate itself form the original in any remarkable way." He sounds fine, says Katey Rich at Cinema Blend . Cruise "always seemed like one of those people who can do just about everything well." The true test, though, will be whether he can pull off those crazy '80s dance moves. Listen to Cruise's "Sugar" rendition:

Hoda Kotb's Dream Comes True at 2024 Paris Olympics When She Meets Tom Cruise -- See the Moment

Hoda Kotb

Hoda Kotb's longtime dream came true when she excitedly met Tom Cruise at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Hoda Kotb 's "dream" came true at the 2024 Paris Olympics .

Although the Olympics opening ceremony happened on Friday, the spectacle that left Kotb, 59, awestruck was meeting Tom Cruise , 62. Kotb took to Instagram to share an iconic selfie she snapped with Cruise in Paris' pouring rain.

"Do you know when you dream of meeting Tom Cruise… And then it finally happens," she captioned a very damp-looking photo of the two.

In the photo, Kotb beams with excitement standing next to Cruise. She wears a poncho that exposes only a circle of her smiling face while the actor with wet hair wears all black.

"In your dream were you wearing a poncho?" Jenna Bush Hager  joked in the comments.

"Icons only," Savannah Guthrie wrote.

Cruise and Kotb just casually bumped into each other on a bridge over the Seine, Today crews on the scene told the outlet.

Céline Dion wowed at the opening ceremony . It marked her first performance since halting her worldwide tour and stepping back from public life after revealing her diagnosis with Stiff Person Syndrome in December 2022. She performed Edith Piaf's famous work, "Hymne à L'Amour" (the Hymn to Love) with the help of a full orchestra. The French ballad was written to the love of Piaf’s life, boxer Marcel Cerdan, who died in a plane crash barely a month after it was first performed.

Last month, Kotb sat down with the 56-year-old global superstar to discuss her health battle with Stiff Person Syndrome and her future as she navigates her medical struggles.

"First of all, she's an incredible fighter. I had no idea what she had been through, how close she came at some point to actually not surviving it," Kotb shared of Dion on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen . "And now here she is, and she's singing again."

Dion shared with Kotb that singing with her medical condition felt "like being strangled," and causes parts of her body to spasm. Living with Stiff Person Syndrome was so intense for Dion at times that it caused her to break a rib.

"It can be in the abdominal. It can be in the spine, in the ribs. But it feels like if I point my feet, it will stay in it," Dion explained to Kotb. "Or if I cook, my fingers or my hands will get in position. It's cramping, but it's like you're in the position of you cannot unlock them."

Kotb teased after their interview that Dion had plans to return to the stage for a live performance . When a caller questioned whether that appearance might take place during the Paris Olympics, Kotb admitted to not knowing for sure, but said she thought that would be "spectacular."

"That would be amazing, but I don't know," Kotb said at the time. "I know she's going to be performing live again, though. I don't know where."

When Dion returned to the stage for the first time in years at the Olympics, she looked stunning in a crystal-studded ensemble. Her show-stopping performance was a full-circle moment nearly 30 years in the making, as Dion opened the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, with a performance of her song "The Power of the Dream."

ET spoke with neurology specialist Dr. Duarte Machado prior to Dion's comeback performance, who dubbed her return to the stage "extraordinary."

"Given that just a month and a half ago, she was on national television with her interview to discuss the difficulties that she's been having... to get to this point of being able to be on a global stage now once again, and and sing at the opening ceremony, it is quite notable," he marveled, "and a victory, really, for anyone with chronic condition -- especially those with SPS -- that with perseverance and the right medical care, that such victories can come true."

The Most Mesmerizing Moments of the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony

Image may contain Architecture Building Eiffel Tower Landmark and Tower

The 2024 Paris Olympics have had a lot to recommend them: an array of impossibly beautiful backdrops ; a starry cast of commentators, including the likes of Alex Cooper and Snoop Dogg; and competitors like Simone Biles , Sha’Carri Richardson , Katie Ledecky, and Coco Gauff that viewers everywhere are thrilled to get behind.

It was only fitting, then, that the Games should begin in spectacular fashion. French theater director Thomas Jolly helmed an opening ceremony unlike any the Games had seen before—unfolding along the River Seine with all manner of top-tier performers on hand to animate the route.

As a crowd including Sarah Jessica Parker, Tom Cruise, Pharrell Williams, Christopher Maloney, Elizabeth Banks, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Greta Gerwig, and thousands upon thousands of Parisians looked on, these were some of the very best moments of the Paris 2024 opening ceremony:

The start of the procession

It all started with a bang: After an explosion of bleu , blanc , and rouge rained down over the Austerlitz Bridge, the (waterborne) parade of nations began with the Greek delegation, followed by the Refugee Olympic Team, officially setting the opening ceremony in motion.

Lady Gaga turning the Seine into a cabaret

“Bonsoir, bienvenue en Paris!” Lady Gaga cried as she kicked off her long-rumored performance at the opening ceremony, doing a joyous rendition of Zizi Jeanmaire’s classic standard “Mon Truc En Plume.” Surrounded by dancers wielding flamingo-pink pompoms, Gaga was dressed in Dior Haute Couture.

The sense of theater—and the heavy metal

Image may contain Person

Jolly’s opening ceremony drew on all kinds of performing arts, stitching together musical phrases from The Phantom of the Opera , Les Misérables , Georges Bizet’s Carmen , and a thrilling set by the French heavy metal band Gojira at the Conciergerie. (Later on, in another engaging display of Paris’s cultural diversity, the rapper Rim'K, wearing a checkered jacket by Louis Vuitton, performed his song “King.”)

The teeming world of la danse was accounted for, too: As troupe of modern dancers splashed near the Notre Dame and acrobats flew over the Pont Neuf, Guillaume Diop—the first Black principal dancer at the Paris Opera Ballet—did a lyrical solo.

Aya Nakamura seizing the Pont de la Concorde

Aya Nakamura , wearing a feathery gold Dior Haute Couture mini, gave a rousing performance of her hit 2018 singles “Pookie” and “Djadja.” She was joined by a gaggle of dancers (also in Dior), as well as the Orchestre de la Garde républicaine.

Take a closer look at her dress below:

The Jeux d’eau in the rain

French pianist Alexandre Kantorow gave a gorgeous performance of one of Ravel’s best-known pieces for the piano—variously translated as “Fountains,” “Playing Water,” or “Water Games”—as the rain came down in Paris.

Axelle Saint-Cirel singing from the roof of the Grand Palais

The Parisian mezzo-soprano was a vision as she sang a stirring new arrangement of “La Marseillaise,” the national anthem of France. Her prettily draped, eight-meter-long dress, also by Dior Haute Couture, was actually of a piece with the French flag she brandished.

The fashion show!

The likes of Farida Khelfa, Ines Rau, and drag queen Nicky Doll turned a footbridge over the Seine into their catwalk during a segment of the ceremony inspired by fashion’s deep roots in Paris.

The scene at the Trocadero…and then the Tuileries

After a glowing mechanical horse carrying the Olympic flag flew down the Seine—and images and videos from Olympics past were spliced together into a rather affecting highlights reel, representing the achievements of athletes from around the world—a mysterious cloaked figure marched solemnly down the Trocadero, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, before the Olympic Hymn played.

Then, following remarks from Tony Estanguet, president of Paris 2024, and Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, King of Clay Rafael Nadal, Carl Lewis, Nadia Comăneci, and Serena Williams boarded a boat with the Olympic torch—heading in the opposite direction. Where were they headed? To meet tennis legend Amélie Mauresmo, who, after a jog up to the Louvre, passed the torch on to a series of athletes including former basketball player Tony Parker, former handball players Michaël Guigou Allison Pineau, and 100-year-old former cyclist Charles Coste.

At the end of the relay were former sprinter Marie-José Pérec and judoka Teddy Riner, who lit an enormous hot-air balloon in the Tuileries Garden.

Dressed in a shimmering beaded Haute Couture dress, Dion—who, as some may recall, sang “The Power of the Dream” at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta—made a much-anticipated appearance to perform “Hymne à L'Amour,” a song popularized by Edith Piaf in the 1950s. In so doing, she brought an utterly unforgettable opening cermeony to a thoroughly moving conclusion.

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Suri Cruise and More Celebrity Kids Changing Their Last Names

Suri cruise, malia obama, shiloh jolie-pitt and more kids of famous families have been dropping their last names or changing their monikers..

These celebrity kids are cruising into a new chapter of life.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise 's daughter Suri Cruise recently revealed she's going by a new name, dropping her dad's stage name and instead using Suri Noelle (an homage to her mom's middle name) at her high school graduation last month.

And the 18-year-old is not the only one to make a change to her surname after reaching adulthood.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt 's daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt filed to legally drop her dad's last name on her 18th birthday in May, requesting to go by Shiloh Jolie moving forward. Likewise, her sister Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, 15, opted to go by Vivienne Jolie in the playbill of The Outsiders musical she worked on earlier this year.

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama 's daughter Malia Obama made a similar move last year when she distanced herself from her family name for a project, choosing to call herself Malia Ann in the credits of her film The Heart.

And Rob Schneider 's daughter Tanner Elle Schneider —who you'll know as country singer Elle King —understands that motivation all too well.

"I wanted to be myself," Elle told ABC News in 2015 of her decision to give herself a new moniker. "I am my own person."

"It’s not that I wanted to be a famous person. I wanted to be a performer," she continued. "But I worked really hard and I did everything myself."

Meanwhile, other legacy performers are dropping both their middle and surnames, creating succinct one-word stage names. Read on to see more celebrities' kids who ditched their famous monikers.

Suri Cruise

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ' daughter went by Suri Noelle —her first name and her mom's middle name—for her high school graduation ceremony in June 2024.

Malia Obama

Former U.S. President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama 's daughter Malia Obama dropped her last name to go by just her first and middle names— Malia Ann —when credited on her 2023 film project The Heart.

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt

On her 18th birthday in May 2024, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt legally filed to change her name to just Shiloh Jolie after mom Angelina Jolie , dropping dad Brad Pitt 's surname.

Olivia Jade

Designer Mossimo Giannulli and actress Lori Loughlin 's daughter Olivia Jade Giannulli doesn't use her last name as an influencer, going by Olivia Jade for her YouTube career.

Rob Schneider 's daughter was born Tanner Elle Schneider but decided to go by Elle King (her middle name combined with her mom London King 's surname) for her singing career.

Samia Najimy Finnerty

Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy and The Hangover 's Dan Finnerty share daughter Samia Najimy Finnerty , but she dropped their monikers to go by just Samia for her stage name as a singer.

Nicolas Cage

August Coppola —the brother of Francis Ford Coppola —welcomed son Nicolas Kim Coppola with dancer Joy Vogelsang . However, you know him by a different name: Nicolas Cage , inspired by superhero Luke Cage.

Willow Smith

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith 's daughter dropped her last name to go by WILLOW as her music stage name.

Glen Powell is gearing up to return to the skies for another “Top Gun” film .

Appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast at the 92nd Street Y, the “ Top Gun: Maverick ” star said that he is holding a date to begin pre-production on the film’s currently untitled sequel. IndieWire has reached out to Powell’s representatives for comment.

“I mean, I have a date,” he said, before being asked if he could share more details. “Absolutely not,” Powell said.

Powell and “Top Gun” co-star Tom Cruise have been vocal about wanting to work together again. While on the “Today” show , Powell teased that a third “Top Gun” would be “happening at some point.”

“Tom and I didn’t get to it at the ‘Twisters’ premiere,” Powell said, citing Cruise’s surprise appearance on the red carpet.

Powell previously addressed the topic of a potential “ Top Gun 3 ” in a 2022 interview with IndieWire’s Kate Erbland , in which he said that Cruise would only return to the franchise if he found the perfect story that met his prerequisite level of spectacle.

“So, is there going to be a ‘Top Gun 3’? If we can figure out more crazy things to do with airplanes or a story that it is compelling and emotional and adventurous and romantic and all those things like, I am sure Tom would be down,” Powell said. “But that’s above my pay grade. Maybe you can pitch it to him when you talk to him!”

“Top Gun: Maverick” was directed by Joseph Kosinski and released in 2022.

During the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in the below video, Powell teased that he would be open to also starring in a musical, specifically “Singing in the Rain” which he deemed one of his favorite films.

“Gene Kelly was a big hero of mine, so if I were to do a musical, that’d probably be the one,” Powell said. He previously announced that he was working with Ryan Murphy on a Broadway show , in addition to leading Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man” remake .

2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony: Celine Dion delivers powerful performance as Olympic cauldron floats into the night sky

Dion was the final performer during the four-hour opening ceremony..

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The 2024 Olympics opening ceremony concluded in Paris, where more than 10,000 athletes joined a rainy celebration parade along the Seine River.

It marked the first time the parade of nations took place outside of a stadium. NBC Olympics production president and executive producer Molly Solomon said the 2024 Summer Olympics organizers threw out the "tradition playbook” this year.

LeBron James and Coco Gauff were the flag bearers for Team USA. Snoop Dogg, NBC’s special correspondent, carried the Olympic torch on its final leg. During the final moments of the ceremony, Celine Dion gave a stirring performance as the Olympic cauldron took off in a hot-air balloon over the City of Light.

Yahoo Entertainment's coverage of the festivities has ended. Read the highlights from the opening ceremony below.

Photos: Celine Dion singing during the opening ceremony

Dion opened up about stiff-person syndrome in new doc.

The singer kept the details of her 2022 diagnosis private until the 2024 release of her documentary I Am: Celine Dion . One scene in the film shows her suffering an episode of stiff-person syndrome, in which her body locks up and she's unable to move or speak.

Experts had previously explained to Yahoo Life that the autoimmune disease affects people differently. Stiffness and muscle spasms can be triggered by stress and last anywhere from minutes to hours.

While there is no cure for stiff-person syndrome, Dion told Vogue France in April that she's chosen to "train like an athlete" to better navigate her symptoms.

"Five days a week I undergo athletic, physical and vocal therapy. I work on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice," she said, and credited a medical team for helping her to be "the best I can be."

Celine Dion performs

After taking time off because of challenges with her health, Celine Dion has made her triumphant return to performing.

She sang in French at the Eiffel Tower at the conclusion of the opening ceremony, just after the Olympic cauldron was lit.

"It’s just incredible what she’s overcome and to have that moment ... She’s a vocal athlete," Kelly Clarkson said after Dion's performance.

Olympic cauldron is lit

The Olympic cauldron has officially been lit — by Teddy Riner, a three-time Olympic judo champion and Marie-José Pérec , a three-time Olympic champion in track and field.

It'll burn for the remainder of the Games, until the closing ceremony on Aug. 11.

Oldest living French Olympian helps light torch

Charles Coste, a French cyclist and oldest living French Olympian at 100 years old, joined the passing of the torch.

He passed it off to the final two French athletes who lit the cauldron.

Celine Dion fans await singer

After days of speculation about whether Celine Dion would perform at the opening ceremony, the singer has not yet appeared.

She posted on Instagram near the start of the ceremony, saying in the post caption that she was "happy to be here" in Paris.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Céline Dion (@celinedion)

She was rumored to be rehearsing a duet with Lady Gaga, who performed toward the beginning of the ceremony, but those reports have not been not confirmed.

Athletes travel back down the Seine with Olympic torch

Though the parade of nations has been completed and French President Emmanuel Macron declared the Games officially on, the opening ceremony is not over yet.

Tennis player Rafael Nadal is carrying the torch. He is Spanish, but because he won 14 French Open titles, he has been designated an "honorary French" athlete, according to one commentator. He boarded a boat with legendary athletes including Serena Williams, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comăneci that is now headed back down the Seine.

As the torch makes its journey toward the cauldron, a light show dances around the Eiffel Tower.

"They are doing something with the torch that I have never seen. ... I've never seen a torch on the run like this before," Savannah Guthrie said on NBC's broadcast.

Hoda Kotb and Tom Cruise meet in Paris

Hoda Kotb has dreamt of meeting Tom Cruise — now it's happened in the City of Light. Like all good rom-com meet-cutes do, it happened in the rain.

Savannah Guthrie commented, "Icons only."

Basketball player Embiid: 'I look good in everything,' even Olympics-themed shades

Joel Embiid, representing Team USA in men's basketball, showed off his Olympic rings glasses in an interview during the opening ceremony.

When asked why he chose to wear them, he jokingly said, "I look good in everything."

"I just thought these looked pretty good, so I was gonna try ... I'm just chillin'," he added.

French rapper Rim'K gives Snoop Dogg a shout-out

Performances during the opening ceremony have included nearly every genre of music, including rap with a performance by Rim’K.

The 46-year-old Algerian-French rapper grew up in a suburb of Paris and was a member of French rap group 113.

FranceTV called him the “prince of the city" as a nod to his decades-long career.

But it was likely Snoop Dogg who enjoyed the performance most. The California rapper and NBC special correspondent was seen dancing to the song in the rain.

🇺🇸 Team USA delegation boat arrives

The 594 athletes representing 46 states made their way down the Seine in the rain during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Arkansas, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming were the only states to send no athletes, the Tennessean reported .

"Everybody's really killing that wet look tonight, just saying," Kelly Clarkson said.

He also posted a close-up of his nails on his Instagram Story.

Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200-meter race at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

This year, his goal is to break the world record set by Jamaican runner Usain Bolt in 2009.

“He was the fastest man ever to do it,” Lyles told CNN . “And soon, it’ll be me.”

First opening ceremony rainfall in more than 70 years

It hasn't rained during an opening ceremony since 1952, when the Summer Olympics were held in Helsinki.

Statues of notable French women emerge from pillars on the Seine

During the opening ceremony, statues of "some of the heroines of French history" emerged from pillars on the Seine.

The new statues include French director, screenwriter and film producer Alice Guy, as well as politician and French magistrate Simone Veil.

They "are going to be offered to the city after the ceremony, which is pretty special," Kelly Clarkson said on NBC.

Minions invade opening ceremony

For a brief animated portion of the opening ceremony, the minions from the Despicable Me franchise took over our screens.

They are perhaps the best-known property of Illumination Studios Paris, a French animation company. The studio's latest film, Despicable Me 4, premiered in theaters on July 3. In the 2015 spinoff movie Minions, the little yellow creatures served as henchmen to French military leader Napoleon.

In the animated short, the minions obtained the Mona Lisa and kept it inside a submarine. While practicing archery, they accidentally sprung leaks in the vessel, which fell apart and ejected them into the water.

Notre Dame bell rings for 1st time since devastating 2019 fire

The Notre Dame Cathedral is covered in scaffolding and still under repair, but its bell rang for the first time since a fire in April 2019.

The fire ripped through the historic landmark, causing the spire to collapse and much of the interior to be destroyed. At the time, French President Macron pledged to rebuild the 12th-century church within five years.

The cathedral is set to open in December after a years-long restoration process.

Get to know opening ceremony performer Aya Nakamura

Sparks went flying when the French-Malian singer made her entrance at the opening ceremony wearing a gold feather frock.

The 29-year-old is the most-listened-to French-speaking singer in the world, known for hit songs " Djadja " — which has been streamed more than a billion times, according to a New York Times report — and " Pookie ." She also recently attended the 2024 Met Gala and has more than 20 million followers on social media.

More from the New York Times :

Announcements of her Olympic appearance drew opposition from France’s far right, objecting to the fact that she sings in Arabic, English and African languages along with French; there were also openly racist comments. “You can be racist but not deaf,” she responded on X.

3 facts about the cancan

The cancan is as French as fries (or maybe the Eiffel Tower) so it comes as no surprise that the opening ceremony featured the dance, with performers clothed in hot pink frilly skirts while kicking and splitting on the side of the Seine.

Here are three facts about the famous dance.

The dance started in the 1830s in the Montmartre section of Paris, getting inspiration from the polka and galop, according to the book Cancan! by David Price .

Cancan translates to malicious gossip, CBS reports

Cabaret performers at the Moulin Rouge helped popularize the cancan.

Masked man, heavy metal band steal the show (and delight Kelly Clarkson)

After a high-energy performance of the cancan, a masked person running across roofs and surfaces through the city carrying a torch briefly stole the show. The individual passed dancers in rags before they broke out in a performance of a song from Les Misérables, a musical that covers the history of France. The identity of the person wearing the mask has not yet been revealed.

if you're not watching the olympic opening ceremony the main torchbearer is a masked vigilante wearing keens and les miserables-style revolutionary rags who entered on a boat to the phantom of the opera theme and is now doing parkour around paris to techno. extremely french — molly taft (@mollytaft) July 26, 2024

Later, metal band Gojira delivered a performance with a heavy dose of pyrotechnics.

"We just went metal after Les Mis , after cancan," NBC opening ceremony host Kelly Clarkson said, enthused.

An opera singer took over, performing as a large ship passed through the Seine. "Sing!" Clarkson shouted.

It's all a part of a portion of the event titled "Liberté," which is one-third of the French Republic's motto, "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité."

Translated to English, it is "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity."

Designers go all-in on team uniforms

Designers designated to create their country's Olympic uniforms were ready to show up and out in the world's fashion capital. And while each put their best foot forward, there are a few that stand apart from the rest.

Those that have received high praise thus far include Team Mongolia by Michel & Amazonka , Team Haiti by Stella Jean, Team Jamaica by Puma and Team Czech Republic by Jan Société and Alpine Pro.

Opening ceremony is leaning 'into the clichés about France'

NBC's Mike Tirico said during the broadcast that the artistic director of the opening ceremony, Thomas Jolly, "decided to lean into some of the clichés about France," including the city's reputation for romance and great literature.

So far, viewers have been treated to a performance of the cancan, Marie Antoinette holding her own severed head and references to Les Misérables.

Brazil's Olympic uniforms cause controversy

The ceremonial uniforms worn by Team Brazil have received divided responses.

The striped shirt and embroidered jacket, featuring the green, blue and yellow of the Brazilian flag, have been criticized for being too casual, especially when paired with Havaianas flip-flops.

Brazilian singer Anitta reacted to the outfits in a comment on an Instagram account, saying that they portray how "undervalued" athletes are, according to WWD .

Paulo Wanderley, the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, has since responded to the criticism.

"It’s not a fashion week in Paris, it’s the Olympics in Paris," he said. “Everyone has a different taste. We approved [the uniform] with a lot of pride. If we had to approve it again, we would do it."

Lady Gaga performs 'Mon Truc en Plume' during opening ceremony

As athletes arrived in boats on the Seine for the parade of nations, Lady Gaga performed "Mon Truc en Plume" in French, flanked by dancers in all black holding bright pink plumes of feathers.

Lady Gaga took a seat at a piano to play a few notes before rejoining the dancers to continue the performance. She then rushed up the stairs to strike a pose as the musical number ended.

She was spotted earlier in the day rehearsing for the performance. It has been rumored that she might perform a duet with Celine Dion as well.

E. coli levels too high for swimming in the Seine today

Olympians are floating on the Seine, but they better not swim in the river On Friday, the E. coli bacteria levels were higher than the safety limit, NBC said. The river will be used for outdoor swimming events like the triathlon, and there is no "plan B," according to Paris Olympics officials , but the Marne river may be used instead. The Seine's cleanliness has upset Parisians and athletes, with locals protesting the reported $1 billion spent to make it swimmable and competitors concerned for their stomachs. E. coli can cause severe gastrointestinal issues and is spread when feces contaminate food and water.

Lady Gaga spotted rehearsing a musical number along the Seine

Lady Gaga's performance at the opening ceremony has not yet been officially confirmed, but all the signs are there.

According to French journalist Thierry Moreau, Lady Gaga and Celine Dion previously rehearsed a duet of "La Vie en Rose" by Édith Piaf.

Photographers caught Gaga along the Seine River rehearsing what appears to be a big musical number with several dancers — and lots of pink feathers.

In what order will the Olympic athletes line up in the parade?

The countries will appear in alphabetical order, according to the spelling in the host country's native language.

CBS News reports:

So for example, Germany, "l'Allemagne" in French, will appear before China, "la Chine."

Per tradition to honor the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Greece will lead the parade. The host country — France — will close out the parade.

Celine Dion and Lady Gaga will reportedly perform together

We know Celine Dion and Lady Gaga are in Paris (oui!) and staying at the same hotel (oui!), but hard details about a joint performance at the opening ceremony are murky.

While not officially confirmed, there are reports that the vocal powerhouses will take the stage together. French journalist Thierry Moreau posted on X that the duo rehearsed "La Vie en Rose" by Édith Piaf as a duet.

Pop queen Gaga previously sang the song in 2018's A Star Is Born, so we've had a preview.

Meanwhile, French newspaper Le Parisien reports that Dion may sing Piaf's "Hymne à l'amour," so a medley sounds possible. Either way, if the Queen of Power Ballads sings, it will mark her first performance in years amid her health struggles with stiff person syndrome. (She publicly shared her diagnosis in 2022.)

Gaga has long given praise to Dion — calling her an "icon" in 2019. Dion famously danced her heart out at a Gaga show in 2018 and said a duet with Gaga was on her bucket list.

Team USA flag bearers en route

Team USA flag bearers LeBron James and Coco Gauff aren't letting a little rain stop them from arriving at the opening ceremony.

Celebrities attend Vogue pre-Olympics party

It's not just competing athletes who have touched down in Paris for the Olympic Games.

Some of fashion's finest, including Anna Wintour and Pharrell Williams, arrived ahead of the opening ceremony, as Louis Vuitton and Vogue teamed up for a pre-party at Fondation Louis Vuitton.

The event was co-hosted by Charlize Theron, Serena Williams, Rosalía and Omar Sy, who all appeared in "medal worthy" ensembles to walk the three-lane track — a sporty play on a red carpet. Other stars, like Jeremy Allen White and Zendaya, as well as first lady Jill Biden, were also in attendance.

Guests got a close-up look at the Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals designed by Louis Vuitton for the 2024 Games. They also enjoyed a musical performance by Tyla.

How Snoop Dogg prepared for the Games

Snoop Dogg, who is NBC's special correspondent for the 2024 Paris Olympics, shared how he's been getting ready for the Games.

"My preparation for primetime is being me," he told reporters on a July 24 media call. "I really know the sport, I know the angle, I know the conversation."

The rapper shared that he's been "sliding into the practice facilities with the different teams."

As for his torch-bearing duties, he calls it a "prestigious honor."

"I've been thinking about Muhammad Ali, when Muhammad Ali was holding [the torch at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics]. It was emotional for all of us to see the champ walking it up there. That's what it feels like to me."

He added, "I'm going to show you why they made me the man to do it."

Celine Dion expected to make her music comeback

The Canadian songstress, who's been sidelined by stiff person syndrome and unable to perform, will reportedly make her comeback during the opening ceremony.

Variety was first to report Dion is poised to perform — and it's rumored she'll be singing alongside Lady Gaga . The report followed weeks of rumors Dion had been secretly prepping for the event. Then on July 23 she was photographed outside a hotel in Paris.

French journalist Thierry Moreau said Dion rehearsed “La Vie en Rose,” the famous Édith Piaf song, as a duet — and will be dressed in Dior, a pink and black feather cape, for the main event.

Dion, known for hits including "My Heart Will Go On," publicly revealed her diagnosis with the neurological disorder, which causes painful muscle spasms and affects her ability to walk and sing, in 2022. She halted her tour schedule but vowed to get "back onstage, even if I have to crawl."

It seems Dion, who shared her health struggle in Prime Video's recent I Am: Celine Dion doc, actually teased an Olympic performance in her April Vogue France   interview, saying, "I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team. I want to be the best I can be. My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again!”

'Massive' arson attack on Paris public transportation causes travel chaos before Olympics opening

Arsonists carried out an attack on France's high-speed rail network on Friday, just hours before the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony was set to begin.

Service on three different train lines was disrupted because of a "massive" coordinated arson attack, officials said. Around 800,000 travelers are expected to be impacted this weekend — including Olympic athletes.

“Everything indicates that these are criminal fires,” Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete said. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal described it as “prepared and coordinated ... acts of sabotage."

Friday's opening ceremony is continuing as planned.

5 movies leaving Hulu in July you have to watch

Angelina Jolie holds onto a kid in Those Who Wish Me Dead

Where does the time go in a month? It seems like only last week that the nation was celebrating the Fourth of July, but here we are with only a few days left to catch some of the best movies on Hulu before they depart at the end of the month. There’s still one last weekend in July, so that should help you find some time to sneak in a movie or three.

Our selections for the five movies leaving Hulu in July include two stories of survival, a quirky comedy, a real monster mash, and one of the greatest music biopics we’ve ever seen.

Cast Away (2000)

Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors of his generation and a two-time winner for Best Actor at the Oscars. So when we say that Cast Away features one of his most-impressive performances, you should really take note. Under the direction of Robert Zemeckis, Hanks threw himself into the role of Chuck Noland, an employee of FedEx who is stranded on an island after surviving a plane crash.

Hanks spends long stretches of the movie acting against himself and making us care for his only companion, a volleyball with a blood-painted face that he calls Wilson. Chuck has something to live for, but surviving by himself is a challenge and escape is nearly impossible.

Watch Cast Away on Hulu .

Rushmore (1998)

Rushmore was not Wes Anderson’s first movie , but it is the film that really got him noticed by mainstream audiences. Jason Schwartzman makes his big-screen debut as Max Fischer, a student at Rushmore Academy whose extracurricular activities can’t hide the fact that he’s close to flunking out. One of the parents at Rushmore, Herman Blume (Bill Murray), is so impressed by Max that he strikes up a friendship with the younger man.

Max also has an age-inappropriate crush on Rushmore teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams) that borders on obsession. Herman discourages Max’s feelings for Rosemary, only to start a relationship with her himself. And that betrayal may end the bond that Max and Herman had with each other.

Watch Rushmore on Hulu .

Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)

Thanks to Warner Bros.’ failed push to release films day and date on digital and in theaters, Those Who Wish Me Dead didn’t get the audience it deserved in 2021. A film from the co-creator of Yellowstone , Taylor Sheridan, with Angelina Jolie in the lead role, should really be able to sell itself. Jolie plays Hannah Faber, a smokejumper who specializes in rescuing people during forest fires. Except Hannah is haunted by the people she couldn’t save.

Hannah gets her chance for redemption when she meets Connor Casserly (Finn Little), a boy whose father has just been murdered by the mob in an attempt to retrieve files now in Connor’s possession. To smoke Hannah and Connor out of hiding, the assassins target Hannah’s friends and set a raging fire that may ultimately kill all of them.

Watch Those Who Wish Me Dead on Hulu .

Van Helsing (2004)

Long before the Dark Universe failed to ignite renewed interest in the Universal Monsters, Van Helsing tried to reboot most of them in a single movie! Deadpool & Wolverine ‘s Hugh Jackman stars as Gabriel Van Helsing, the Vatican’s favorite monster hunter, who has a murky past. Van Helsing isn’t entirely sure who he really is when he is sent to slay Dracula (Richard Roxburgh).

That’s easier said than done even under the best of circumstances. Dracula has plans that include werewolves and Frankenstein’s monster (Shuler Hensley) that can overwhelm even Van Helsing. The good news is that Van Helsing has help in the form of Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale), a woman with her own reasons to see Dracula destroyed. However, the Count may have his eye on Anna in order to turn her into his latest bride.

Watch Van Helsing on Hulu .

Walk the Line (2005)

Logan director James Mangold had the best of all possible worlds with his Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line . The two leads of the film, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, not only turned in great performances, but they also did their own singing as Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, respectively. That meant an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for Phoenix and an Oscar win for Best Actress for Witherspoon.

The film recounts Johnny Cash’s troubled life and his battle with addiction even as his music talent made him a superstar. But not even Johnny’s fame could save his first marriage to Vivian Cash (Ginnifer Goodwin). June can help set Johnny on a path of redemption, but he has to take the hardest steps by himself.

Until the fall TV season begins, new TV shows on Hulu are going to be few and far between. But between now and September, there are few underrated shows on Hulu that are worth your time, especially if you need something to binge.

Two out of our three picks for the underrated shows on Hulu that you need to watch this month were originally broadcast on ABC before meeting early ends. That's why we're grateful to streaming services like Hulu that give them a second chance to be discovered. Our other pick for the month is a new Hulu original series that has flown way below the radar, possibly because it was produced for Germany. But that's also what makes Pauline stand out in this lineup. Pauline (2024)

In many ways, Unbreakable was the highlight of M. Night Shyamalan's career, and it's been all downhill from there. Bruce Willis, who had previously worked with Shyamalan on The Sixth Sense, reunited with the director for Unbreakable in 2000. One of the best things about Unbreakable are the surprises, so if you don't already know the premise of the film, then we're not going to tell you what that is in this article.

Shyamalan did eventually get around to making a loosely connected Unbreakable trilogy that ended with Glass in 2019. But as a big fan of the original Unbreakable, my personal recommendation is that you ignore Glass entirely. In retrospect, Unbreakable is better as a standalone story without any of the convoluted retcons that arrive in that so-called conclusion. And now, it's time to share the reasons why you should watch Unbreakable on Max. Bruce Willis gives a surprisingly vulnerable performance

Lights, camera, action! Yes, action movies are great to watch any time. But these three action movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in July are the cream of the crop right now. They feature some of the best action stars of this generation and generations past, including Clint Eastwood, Angelina Jolie, and Tom Cruise.

There’s an epic spaghetti Western, an action-adventure movie based on a video game series, and, coming soon, the latest in one of the best long-running spy franchises. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to watch these movies while they’re available as part of an Amazon Prime or a standalone Amazon Prime Video subscription.
