Trek 2100 vs 2300 - $350 more worth it?

trek 2300 us postal

  • Add to quote

Looking at an '05 Trek 2100 for $1450 and an '05 Trek 2300 for $1800. The differences are: 2100 Bontrager Race Fork 105 shifters 105 FD and RD Bontrager race crankset Shimano 520 pedals 105 brakes Bontrager race bars and stem 2300 Bontrager Race Lite fork Ultegra Shifters (10spd) Ultegra FD and RD (10spd) Ultegra crankset no pedals Ultegra brakes Bontrager race lite bars and stem Is it worth the extra $350 to get the 2300? All the other components are the same, these are the only differences (other than the paint job). I have only ridden DA components so far (on a borrowed bike) so I don't know if the difference between 105 and Ultegra is worth the extra money. Any thoughts?

Yeah its probably worth it to go from 105 9 speed, to ultegra 10. If they were both 9 speed, I would say no.

9/10 speed is the bigger issue... With the105 bike you're getting 9 speed and with Ultegra bike should be 10 speed. Get the 10 speed.

The dealo with the 9/10 speed thing is that 9 is on the way out, 10 is on the way in, you might have trouble finding 9 speed stuff in a bit unless your fond of ebay. Also, it's simply better, the cranks are better, the shifters are better. All that other stuff is crap, you don't NEED another cog, the extra cog isn't what matters in the 9/10 argument, it's the subsquent upgrades thoughout the group. Also on the 2300 your not getting shafted with a bonty crankset, you get the ultgera 10 cranks, which are a vast improvement over the normal 9spd cranks, and worlds apart from the bonty cranks. Buy the 2300, it's worth it, if it were 500 more, it would still be worth it.

Personally, if the $350 weren't too much of an issue, I would go with the 2300 series for the following reasons: 9 speed shifters (both Ultegra and 105) have a bad tendency to rattle (which can be fixed with a bit of silicon caulk). Perhaps Shimano has solved the problem for the later 9 speed models? 10 speed shifting seems slightly cleaner than 9 speed. My impression is that 10 speed Ultegra gives a slightly smoother shift than 9 speed Dura Ace. Cranksets. If Trek is using still Truvativ rebadged road cranks like they do with their mountain bike line, the cranks will have significant flex. If you put down a lot of power or weigh above 170 lbs, the Ultegra cranks should feel much stiffer. (This is not referencing outboard v. ISIS bottom bracket. I think the quality between these systems for a road bike is still a toss-up, albeit the outboard system certainly has more potential in terms of bearing life.) Bushings in 9 speed 105 rear derailleurs have a bad issue with squeaking. Even with lubrication. Either bike will function well and components should last for the same number of miles. The extra $350 saves you a small amount of weight and will give you slightly better shifting performance. Go out and ride the two bikes for a few miles; if you feel a difference, get the one that you think works better. Addendum: Some people are concerned with planned obsolescence of high-end 9 speed equipment. Shimano has a bad habit of producing high-end components and consumables for very few years after the newest and greatest comes out.

You may want to consider going with an all carbon fiber bike like this one that our Trek store in Columbus, Ohio is going to have on sale next week. Kevin http://trekstorecolumbus.com/site/intro.cfm TREKtoberfest!!! October 17-22 We are going to have a sale in true Germanic fashion. Bring in the fall with these spooky deals.... * 5.0 Pilot Road Bikes Regularly Priced $2339.99 OCLV CARBON FIBER FRAME Now $1399.99 MADE IN WATERLOO, WI *while supplies last

You also forgot that the bars, stem and fork are also lighter. Spend the extra $350.00 because you are getting more like $600.00 in upgrades between everything.

Ok, you all have me leaning toward the 2300. I actually like the paint job better on it as well. I'm curious though, brownhunter, what Felt do you have? I've been looking at an F55 as well, but keep coming back to the Treks for warranty and name recognition (I never heard of Felt until I saw one in the lbs). I"m heading back to the lbs this weekend with my riding gear to put some miles on a few models. I spent about an hour the other day at lunch looking over the Specialized offerings at another lbs. There's just too many options out there and I just don't have enough experience to make the decision as easy as I'd like it to be...

trek 2300 us postal

Yesssss YESS YESS IN EVERY WAY YES ultegra 10 is worth it. plus the paint job is WAY sweeter. if you tried to upgrade the 2100 to the parts that the 2300 has, I'd be WAY*again* more than $350.

I'm with the other people go for the upgraded bike. 5 years from now are you going to miss the $350. I have an Ultrega 10 speed and it shifts very easily. I think with the 10 speed the cogs in the rear are closer together (someone can correct me on this) and this might help with the shifting. Anyway whatever the reason my bike shifts effortlessly and quietly. Don't know the quality of the pedals they are giving on the lessor bike but there will also be a cost for that..

Trek 2300 2003 Road Bike

  • USER REVIEWS

Fast and reliable. Very lightweight with the aluminum frame. Bought it used and it can keep up with new road bikes easily. Full Ultegra groupset which is nice, and the shifting is still crisp and responsive at 17 years old. Aero wheels are a nice touch. Three large front gears which is good for almost any type of terrain. The granny gear, which is uncommon on a road bike, allows me to tackle steep inclines even with a fully loaded pannier. Very maneuverable able to cut around corners quickly, and great for commuting. Braking feels good overall, but can be slightly sluggish when braking from hoods at high speeds. Amazing bike, probably the best $250 purchase of my life.

Didn't come with any mounting points for a rear or front rack, and there isn't enough clearance for me to switch to fatter tires. Max tire width I think is 700x25. Seat was uncomfortable so I switched it out. Paint was chipping a bit on the frame.

-extremely durable, even after almost 15 years; -shimano 105 setup, only had to replace the guiding wheels in the rear derailleur and the chain together with a new 9 speed cassette, changes gears fast an smooth; -front gears need changing since the teeth are showing signs of wear and tear, are still performing well tough; -strong frame and carbon fork, survived a side impact collision twice with a car and are still straight and going strong; -fast bike, responses well to sudden force acting on the pedals if you want to speed up quickly; -decals and stickers are still there after 14 years, no chipping at all -very versatile road bike for the beginner and the more advanced user, and a great recreational bike for fun!

-saddle was a pain in the ass literally, was completely worn out and broken. changed it into a mission saddle and problem solved; -furthermore none what so ever.

I live in Holland and a year ago, I was searching for a affordable road bike but was for a long time unsuccessful. That was until on a flea market in Holland I came across this road bike, which was up for sale at around 80 dollars (100 euro). Did not think twice and bought it, although I knew this needed a little TLC (money) to get it up to spec. It costed me around another 80 dollars or so in new tires and the drive system to be fully operational, and loved it ever since. I can keep up with other carbon road bikes a 100 times more expensive than mine even without click pedals and shoes, i have standard mountain bike pedals on it currently. Very light-weight for its age, gets you up to speed in no time at all. And the amateur pro's hate it. they complain about it weighing 5 kilo's more than theirs and having a bell that weighs 10 grams an this and that....and all i have to say is, you just have to pedal harder which is a great work out anyways :)

Giant peloton 7200 steel road bike, several years ago, which in fact was more expensive than my current Trek one.

Stiff frame for performance, speed and climbing. Good looks too!

After riding a mountain bike and Hybrid bike for 3 yrs. the switch to the Trek 2300 brought a whole new and exciting change to riding. Great bike to get quick response and performance in a short, quick burst way. I love the bike!

Lively, light, excellent equipment.

Very poor quality decals and paint. Decals peeled on underside of top tube. Trek said it was my fault for putting the bike on a wall rack - but the rack is foam padded!! Paint chips very easily

I've enjoyed this bike from day one, especially as the price was so good. It is a joy to ride on short or long (century) distances.

Pinarello Galileo 105

Great capacity for upgrading. Can accept a wide range of "grupos" items from Campy to shimano. Ligthness and stiffness.

The best bike I've road in the last years I have been in the road. Great movements. Great capacity for upgrading. And the response to road changes is incredible. Probably the configuration I have can help to absorb better the pavement changes, but in overall is great. the price paid is only for the frame with headset and carbon fork. I assembled it with my parts at home.

none at this time.

Quality of build, with a combination of comfort and speed. No problems with seat - I'm a little over 6 feet and weigh 180 and not even a twinge after 50 mi. rides. The only ache I get is my neck - not used to road position. Generally feel quite comfortable in all handlebar positions on this 56 cm frame - I've got 32 in. inseam. Feels rock solid up to 47 mph (so far!)

Could use larger diameter handle bars. May add ergo padding first and see if I like the feel.

Back into road biking after brief 25 yr. lay-off. Bought last years' model 2300 this Sept. Been riding a Titus Racer-X mtn. bike, but went road to increase opportunities to ride. Test ride almost did me in... Fumbling with integrated levers and not clipped in, hit a small, deeep, pothole. Like the Weeble, I wobbled, but didn't fall down. Saved that for first group ride - doh! At first, the bike felt like I was riding a razor - in a bad way. And then, after a few rides, felt like riding a laser. Like many born-again roadies, there is no better feeling than powering through rolling countryside. After a little conditioning, the 2300 let me do just that.

Uhh...nothing really similar. Last road bike was an early 70's Motebecane Grand Jubilee with downtube shifters. Modern technology is good. Demo'd some compact frame bikes and don't like the "one size fits most" concept.

The frame is plenty stiff for bigger riders and the paint was well sprayed overall.

The frame decals were aligned/applied unevenly on the tubes when compared to the opposite side ones. The bottom bracket threads seem to be machined a bit sloppy as the cups fit a bit slack, and needed to be re-torqued about every 1000 miles. The headset tube machining taper showed wear as high and low spots, causing the bearings to constantly need adjustment as they wore down the high areas. The rear triangle geometry is very long and this causes squirmy hill acceleration and sluggish climbing. These factors coupled with the overall frame geometry made for sluggish slow handling.

I bought this Trek 2300 frameset to build a training bike that would be an extra ride.

Cannondale and Orbea aluminum framesets.

climbing, sprinting, and accelerating. All around great bike

none really, maybe the seat as it takes forever to break in and still isn't that comfortable.

Exellent ride. Best on the climbs and sprints as is very stiff. Weels are great, only like 150g heavier than ksyriums - and better climbers/ accelerators. Great parts spec. All around great bike.

None, first road bike.

everything. the components are nice and the wheels feel really fast

too many decals (just my own personal preference)

no beefs with the bike. I had a giant tcr 2 before this and find that the fit is much better (trek offers better sizing) and the bike does what it is supposed to do without problems.

giant tcr 2

components work well together, all full Ultegra, lightweight, responsive.

obviously you have to change the seat and pedals. Look at the crank brothers egg beaters. Initial setup at the store sucked. It took about 400 miles to get it dialed in.

An all around exceptional bike. Worth the $ over the 2200. Very fast, handles well, and is an excellent climber. No one keeps up w/me on any kind of climb. Uncomfortable seat, changed to Terry Fly. The guys at the shop were no help at all, but here in Texas everyone thinks they invented the wheel.

Test road Lemond, Specialized Allez,(compact geometry, awful), Klein Quantam Pro(top tube to stretched out), and 2200.

REVIEW: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 Episode 3

I n Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 , the crew of the Discovery is in hot pursuit of thieves Moll and Mok. Booker ( David Ajala ) discovers a personal connection to Moll, whose real name is Melene. She is the daughter of Booker’s old mentor, Cleveland Booker IV. Booker’s longing to reconnect with her intensifies as she is the last remaining family he has. However, the Federation, still wary of Booker following his near cataclysmic actions in season 4 , considers the pursuit of Moll and Mok solely their jurisdiction.

The Discovery crew heads towards Trill in pursuit of the thieves. While en route, they delve into an 800-year-old mystery involving a Romulan scientist who researched the Progenitors, the primordial beings from which all life in the known galaxy originated. Utilizing the unique lifespan of the Trill, their investigation leads them to focus on a Trill named Jinaal. This Trill scientist existed concurrently with the Romulan scientist and the enigmatic riddle introduced in the season 5 premiere . By tapping into Jinaal’s experiences across his various lifetimes as a Trill, they uncover concrete answers instead of relying on speculation.

Early on in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 , this is the most true to traditional Star Trek the series has been in a long time. Throughout much of Star Trek: Discovery ‘s history , the focus has been primarily on action and drama. Even the opening episodes of season 5 carried that tone. However, as the mystery of the Progenitor artifact starts to unravel, it becomes clear that the Discovery crew is engaging more in puzzle-solving, research, historical exploration, and dialogue rather than participating in all-out intergalactic wars spanning galaxies, times, and dimensions.

This is further reinforced by the crew’s need to participate in the zhian’tara. It is the only way Captain Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green )  and Booker can speak with Jinaal.  Here, Wilson Cruz, as Doctor Hugh Culber, showcases his acting skills by embodying Jinaal’s character. his serves as another instance of his character taking on the burden of a demanding and emotionally taxing task on behalf of the crew. Given his role as a doctor, it’s natural that his empathy surpasses even that of his fellow Starfleet crewmates. However, it would be beneficial for him to prioritize his well-being sooner rather than later.

Through Jinaal, they uncover the truth about what the Romulan scientist was attempting to safeguard: ancient Progenitor technology. The technology was so advanced, so limitless, that it instilled fear in scientists from various species, compelling them to keep it a secret. That is, until someone could decipher the Progenitor riddle. Considering the state of the galaxy 800 years ago during the Dominion War, it’s understandable why they took such measures.

The Dominion War , from 2373 to 2375, witnessed all major powers of the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants engaging in conflict. Two military alliances, the Federation Alliance and the Breen-Dominion Alliance, clashed in a devastating struggle. Characterized by significant military and civilian losses, including the targeted annihilation of over eight hundred million Cardassians and the extensive deployment of starship fleets, it stands as one of the bloodiest and most destructive wars in recent galactic history.

Delving into the discussion of political disparities among species, Captain, now Ambassador Saru ( Doug Jones ), plans their marriage alongside President T’Rina ( Tara Rosling ). Saru navigates a new phase of life and a distinct form of warfare—cross-galactic politics. Constantly pulled in various directions, Saru finds himself serving as an Ambassador, yet his role feels largely unchanged. The primary divergence lies in his romantic conflict, overshadowing his cultural and ethical dilemmas.

Amidst the overarching Progenitor plot, Saru’s subplot appears underdeveloped, lacking the depth seen in the previous seasons. While hoping for thematic echoes of the Dominion War, the series currently prioritizes Saru’s intricate love story over utilizing his Ambassadorial position to shed light on cross-species political dynamics in the 32nd century.

The scientists from 800 years ago intentionally made the Progenitor’s secret elusive because they lacked trust in the powers of their era to wield the technology responsibly. Given the tumultuous events of the previous two seasons in the 32nd century, a similar sentiment likely prevails. This aspect alone could have made Saru’s Ambassadorial role this season more compelling.

However, instead of delving into cross-species political dynamics, his relationship with T’Rina becomes the primary source of conflict . Even as the Discovery crew edges closer to unraveling the Progenitor secrets, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 remains primarily focused on the crew adjusting to their new commanding officer.

The crew of the Discovery remains skeptical of their new first officer due to his tendency to act aggressively to complete the mission. To foster better understanding, Captain Burnham orders Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) to meet 1 – 1 the crew. However, what begins as an opportunity to acquaint himself with the crew members soon devolves into a lesson on connection.

It seems like an odd choice to introduce such an unlikable character, especially in the final season of the series. With this new addition disrupting the ship’s cohesion, the focus shifts away from unlocking the secrets of the Progenitors to addressing internal conflicts. Amid the final season, where the cast has formed strong bonds, it feels jarring to witness them having to educate someone on basic empathy.

With nearly a third of the season down, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 shows the series is taking its time to build the story it is trying to tell, for better or worse. The Progenitor storyline stands out as the most developed, while the remainder of the cast and crew grapple with interpersonal conflicts. As the midpoint of the season approaches, there’s a desire to see a crew that doesn’t require overt moral lessons, yet current circumstances suggest otherwise. Nevertheless, there are hints that these storylines could eventually intertwine to serve the overarching plot. However, the journey feels like a slow warp through space.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 3 is streaming exclusively on Paramount+ with new episodes every Thursday.

    5. ★★★★★. ★★★★★. Strength: Trek knows how to make a great road bike. The geometry is spot on, and the setup is right where it needs to be for a bike placed right under the carbon brothers. Very stiff and well suited for a larger rider. Weakness: Trek has a tendency to over-bontrager all of their bikes.
