Have a Finer-Boned Horse?  Trek is the perfect boot!

The Trek and ELB (Entry Level Boots) are the best choices for finer-boned horses. Both styles have a unique front-closure system that allows for an extra-snug fit on the upper portion of the boot – creating a very secure fit.

On a finer-boned animal, the wrap-around Velcro closures can be drawn to the front and angled downward when the boot is being fastened, creating an almost “V” neck at the boot collar, tightening the fit:

Horse Trail Chicks Review of Trek with Studs on Snow & Ice

The Horse Trail Chicks is an equine product review team in Vermont.  Here’s what they thought of our boots:

“This past winter I had the opportunity to try a pair of Cavallo Trek Hoof Boots.  Prior to this, I had pretty much written off hoof boots, having had a few experiences with boots flying off at the trot or gallop and causing bucking episodes and other unpleasantness. So when I saw the Cavallos at Equine Affaire, I was pretty excited – they looked like they would stay put on the hoof. They can also be fitted with studs, which means that my horse – who is always barefoot in the winter – can safely walk out on icy roads…”

Trek Comes in Handy During Coronavirus Isolation

“Boots fit perfect! Put them on for 20 mins this morn, and Twix was like a mountain goat climbing on everything, LOL! Turbo adjusted to them very quickly and really enjoyed them.

I Will keep working on breaking them in this week and next, and then on the third week I’ll introduce 10 mins of lunging, 10 mins of standing, and then keep lengthening the time over a period of weeks as we have a lot of time now with the Coronavirus lockdown, LOL!

Ringbone Ring Bone hoof Cavallo Trek Green Hoof Boots

Here’s a photo – OMG: Twix looks sooooo cute in hers! They are so easy to fit, It’s totally blown my mind how fabulous they are. I think there will be a surge in them in my area as all my field neighbours were like, WOW! I want a pair .

The boots are amazing, farriers have put me off them for so long, but they are incredible.

Twix hasn’t ever had shoes (metal) she had the glue shoe and got an abscess straight away. They were awful to fit – messy.  Kept twisting and were a nightmare to get off. The boots are an all-round solution.

Turbo was very relaxed in them, due to the boots easing his ring bone. And I feel more relaxed to know that he won’t ever have to have metal shoes on his feet again.

Just can’t get over how easy it was to fit them and how helpful you guys have been and they were matched with boots that fit like gloves, I seriously can not believe that everyone isn’t using these boots, took me 30 seconds to fit both! Literally, 30 seconds, I am over the moon!

No more metal!!

Am so happy today X

-Melanie Ayre, Wales

Want to order but don’t know your size?

No problem. You can still purchase your Cavallo Boots by selecting “Size to be Determined” under the size selection. After purchase, watch for a special email from Cavallo Customer Service with hoof measuring instructions and a link to upload your photos directly to us when you’re ready. After viewing your photos, we’ll make an expert size recommendation before shipping out your new boots!

Need help to find your size now? Send us your measuring photos HERE and we’ll send you an expert size recommendation. Here’s how to take measurement photos:

Step 1 — prepare the hoofs:.

  • FOR ACCURATE SIZING, BE SURE TO TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS RIGHT AFTER A FRESH TRIM. (Future growth is already factored into each size range)
  • Brush and clean the hoof carefully so that the entire foot is clearly visible, and the buttress lines are obvious.
  • Make sure to use a measuring device with highly visible, contrasting numbers that will be easy to read and will show up well in photos.
  • DO: Use a ruler or tape measure with increments as small as 1/16 of an inch (or down to the millimeter for metric rulers). Measure precisely to 1/16 of an inch or millimeter, if possible .

length

Step 2 — Measure the Length

It is important to place the “0” of your measuring device securely against the tip of the toe. Run the measuring device straight down the center of the hoof toward the heel.

Locate your equine’s hard points of the heel (the buttresses) and measure to where these two emerge. Do not include the heal bulbs. Record the length measurement or submit a photo.

* The weight-bearing LENGTH  most often indicates the size necessary. Take hoof WIDTH measurements as well, to confirm that you have chosen the correct sole shape for your horse, either Regular or Slim.

DON’T:  Do not hold your measuring device at an angle. Do not leave any part of the measuring device extended over the edge of the toe

Step 3 — Measure the Width

Using the same measuring device, place the “0” at the edge of your horse’s hoof and run it straight and level across the widest point of the hoof. Make sure the measuring device is snug against the side of the hoof. Record the width measurement or submit a photo.

* If your horse’s hoof width measurement is greater than the hoof length measurement,  choose your horse’s Cavallo boot size in the Regular sole shape, based on width (not length) measurement.

DON’T:  Do not hold your measuring device at an angle.

Step 4 — Taking Measurement Photos

Please make sure you are in a well-lit area and that the entire cleaned hoof is visible in your photos. Position the camera squarely towards the hoof – not on an upwards or downwards angle. Make sure the measuring device is placed flat on the hoof. Always begin at the zero mark. Keep the device in a straight line both across and down.  Please see the image below for example.

TIP: Proper photos are easier achieved with the help of another to hold the hoof.

Step 5 — Size Each Individual Hoof

Repeat the measuring process described above for all hooves you wish to size for Cavallo Hoof Boots.

TIP:  Even on the same equine, not all hooves measure the same. It is always best to measure each individual hoof to obtain the most accurately sized boot for each foot.

Choosing your Sole Width

  • REGULAR SOLE:  Length and width measurements are the same or fairly equal.
  • SLIM SOLE:  For sizes 0-6, this sole is chosen when the sole width measurement is 6mm (1/4″) less than the length measurement (indicating a narrower hoof). If the width is more than two sizes narrower than the length, this sole may not be suitable.

Fitting Finer-Boned Horses

The Trek and ELB (Entry Level Boots) are the best choices for finer-boned horses.

Both styles have a unique front-closure system that allows for an extra-snug fit on the upper portion of the boot – creating a very secure fit. Wrap the Velcro closures from back to front drawing to the front on a downward angle to create a “V” shape in the center to tighten the fit.

How to Measure When Using Cavallo Boots Over Metal Shoes

Great results are obtained with Cavallos over metal, as the TPU (thermoplastic urethane) sole absorbs the shock, which causes vibration up the horse’s structure. Cavallos also prevent sole tenderness, heel bruising, pulling shoes off and injuries to the coronet band and other areas. Boots are also used for shod horses for hoof rehabilitation and to provide increased comfort and protection during riding, training, transport, and turnout.

To measure a shod horse, follow our regular measuring instructions (as above) but instead, measure the length and width of the horseshoe itself (rather than the bare hoof). If you are unsure of your measurements or would like a second opinion, please send us photos of the length and width of your horseshoes.

You can also send photos to us by PM on Facebook at  Cavallo Hoof Boots.

(If it is not possible for you to take or send us hoof measurement photos, please send us your careful measurements for both length and width of each hoof).

(If it is not possible for you to take or send us hoof measurement photos, please send us your careful measurements for both length and width of each hoof)

Each Hoof is a Unique Structure

Each equine’s foot is unique in conformation, shape, heel placement, hoof angles, etc. Our sizing recommendations are based on photographs. While they are generally correct, many variables can affect the fit of a Cavallo boot, which cannot be determined from a photo. Sizing cannot be confirmed until a boot is carefully  fitted on the actual horse and tested for proper fit.

How to Test the Fit of your Cavallo Hoof Boots Before Using:

Only new UNUSED boots can be exchanged. To keep the boot clean, we suggest covering the hoof with thin plastic and checking fit on a non-scuff (not gravel), clean, dry surface.

cavallo trek hoof boots

Cavallo Hoof Boots are Easy to Fit!

Simply insert hoof into boot. Secure Velcro® closures, and then secure outside closure(s) on the boot.

Important Tips on Fitting

  • You should not have to force the boot on the horse’s hoof in any way. If you are having to force the boot on it is too small.
  • If the boot is rotating independently from the horse’s hoof it is too big. A wiggle is okay, because the hoof expands in weight-bearing and even further in movement.

Here you can see how the sole fits into the length of the boot and the heel bulbs fit into the padded heel area at the back of the boot:

Before Your First Ride

Like your own riding boots, it’s recommended that time is taken to gradually break in your Cavallo Boots. If your horse has sensitive skin, or if you are going on a long ride and are concerned about potential rubbing, Cavallo Pastern Wraps and/or Cavallo Comfort Sleeves are available. If your horse is fine-boned and there is excess space between the pastern and the boot collar, wraps can also prevent major debris from entering the boot.

Breaking In your New Boots

  • Remember that there is a break-in period like your own new boots would have when you first get them. On the first day, the boots shouldn’t be worn for more than 20 minutes. You wouldn’t put on brand-new boots and go walking for hours; treat your horse’s new boots (and feet!) as you would your own. You can speed up the break-in process by using a leather softener or riding through water.

Please see this video  to find out more about how to break in your boots, and how they will shape to custom-fit YOUR horse:

Simple Fitting Tips

  • TOO SMALL:  If you have difficulty putting the boot on, it may be too small. Ideally the boot “pops” nicely onto the hoof for a good fit. Please check your measurements against the chart above.
  • SOLE:  The sole of the hoof should fit securely inside the boot sole. Ensure that the entire weight-bearing wall from front of toe to heel buttress sits within the boot outsole. It may be helpful to compare the outside raised tread area at the bottom of the boot to the weight-bearing length of the hoof sole (toe to buttress as per the diagram on the above measuring chart.
  • HOOF ON THE GROUND:  Place your horse’s hoof firmly on the ground to fasten boot.
  • OUTER COVER:  Ensure that the boot tongue is pushed firmly against the hoof. Draw the outer flaps firmly around the hoof, pressing the Velcro on the flaps against the Velcro on the tongue; keep taut and level.
  • TOO BIG:  Pick the hoof up .   If the boot twists or rotates excessively, it may be too big, or the outer cover may be loosely fastened. If the sole fits well but the upper portion of the boot is too large, consider the ELB or Trek styles as the outer flaps can be angled downward when fastening to adjust for an extra-snug fit on the upper.  Some twisting is fine because the hoof is lifted, in its smallest position. When bearing the horse’s load it expands and may easily fill the boot.
  • CAVALLO PASTERN WRAPS  and  COMFORT SLEEVES  may be used to assist in the breaking-in process or during injury to prevent chafing.
  • SIMPLE BOOTS ONLY:  Once the boot is fitted, if the strap extends beyond the nylon keeper, then you can cut the strap to the preferred length, leaving a line of stitching to prevent unravelling.  PLEASE NOTE: Boots cannot be exchanged if straps have been cut. Be sure boots are the correct size BEFORE cutting.

Potential Hydrolysis effect on Cavallo soles:

Cavallo Hoof Boot soles are molded in industrial grade TPU (Thermoplastic Urethane). Under certain conditions, this compound may be vulnerable to a chemical reaction known as Hydrolysis. Hydrolysis is a bond breakdown which may occur at least 2 years after production. This happens only when boots are stored in unfavorable conditions and not being used.  Hydrolysis may be avoided by ensuring good air ventilation and avoiding humidity over 70%. Keep the storage environment cool and dry with good air circulation. A combination of temperatures as high as 40 Degree Celsius with high moisture content, should be avoided.

Hoof boots that are frequently used in very wet conditions should be allowed to dry before storage and should not be stored in the original box or in areas of poor air circulation. Follow these instructions and your hoof boots will last free of Hydrolysis for many years.

Prestigious Veterinary Hospital Recommends Cavallo Boots

“Rebel has recovered from Laminitis and has to be kept barefoot now. Cavallo Boots allow him to go on gentle trail rides that he loves. I followed your video on how to break them in and it was a big help. He’s a Rocky Mountain Horse. Rebel was a patient at Cornell Ruffian Equine Hospital in NY last year, and they recommended your boots. Just thought you would like to know how I found out about your product. I’m very careful to do whatever I can to keep those hoofs healthy. He’s really walking great!!!”

-Judith Murtha

“The Riser Saddle Pad Really Does Make a Big Difference…”

“I just wanted you to know that I got my front riser English pad and I think my horse really appreciated it. He’s 5, but still butt high, which creates balance issues, but our first ride was AWESOME!! Put me in a much better balance and he seemed to move out much more, even throwing in a happy mini buck of joy. The riser pad really does make a big difference. As you know, trying new tack pieces is really a game of trial and error and can be very expensive. I tried about 10 saddles, western and English before I found a Duett Companion (hoop tree for wide horses). He’s not wide but has prominent, uneven shoulders and nothing seemed to fit. Everyone has an opinion of what’s best or what’s worked for them. I simply listen to what my horse is telling me, lol, he’s good at telling me loud and clear. He’s quite the ham…think he wrote a book about the Prince and the Pea in a former life.”

– Paula Ironstone

Comforting Laminitis & Thin Soles

“I researched hoof boots like crazy before choosing Cavallo, so glad I made the right choice! We love them!! Duke is a mule. He is 26 and suffers from hoof wall separation and Laminitis. He wears his with Gel Pads during turnout. Java a pinto – he is wearing his boots today for comfort during turnout because the ground is frozen, but he normally just wears his for trail riding (he has 3 pairs!) He has thin soles and is an in-betweener, size-wise. We absolutely LOVE YOUR BOOTS! Thank you!!”

-Stephanie Cofer

Better Late than Never

“I was a real latecomer to the idea of using hoof boots… Growing up, my Dad was the ‘horseshoer’ for our family & friends We never would have thought of having a barefoot horse, especially considering all we did with them year-round. But when looking for a horse of my own in recent years, I knew I wanted one that could go barefoot. And so I researched and bought Cavallos right away. I’m very happy, riding Sierra sometimes on rocky trails, and through creeks quite often. Can’t recommend them enough.”

– Valerie Bryce

High-Level Dressage Rider Depends on Cavallo Boots

“I’ve used Cavallo hoof boots for over 9 years, and have used them on a wide variety of horses from my traditional Gypsy ‘dressage cob’, Highland and Welsh Ponies, Thoroughbred and Warmbloods. I have never had any issues with them falling off or rubbing (unlike other boots I had previously tried) and we often have long adventures over and through a range of different terrains. This includes my advanced dressage horses, who have both been barefoot while in full competition work, but always wear their Cavallo hoof boots when hacking out.

I also used the boots when my Cob had Laminitis, as they really helped him to feel more comfortable, and even now when the ground is frozen and rutted, he wears his boots in the field to keep him comfortable. Along with the range of Cavallo accessories, I can always be sure to get the perfect fit and level of comfort for each of my horses.”

-Sue Grice, Dressage Rider, UK

Why Do We Exclusively Use Cavallos?

“Fame is happy in her Cavallo Simple Boots! We have a herd of 4, from a mini horse to a 16hh Quarter Horse. They all have at LEAST one pair of Cavallos! We have Simple, Treks, ELBs and CLBs. We also have almost every type of hoof boot pad Cavallo makes. Why do we exclusively use Cavallos?

  • They’re easy to get on. I don’t want to wrestle with a boot on a lame horse, or in the middle of a snowstorm. They come in a wide range of sizes. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to measure and get the right fit. Cavallos are easy to measure and I’ve never had issues getting the wrong size from my measurements.
  • Cavallos HOLD UP. Some of our crew are ROUGH on their gear. We’ve had many other hoof boot brands end up shredded and in the trash. Boots more expensive than Cavallos! After throwing away numerous pairs of boots that are $200+ a pair after owning them for a month, we switched to Cavallo and had zero issues.
  • Cavallo customer service is the absolute best. I sent them a message asking about using boots in snowy conditions and got a detailed and helpful answer within 24 hours. Often times it’s even sooner.”

The size charts are a good guide to sizing, but this cannot take in to account of the angle of the hoof, heel height and other features of the hooves which will ultimately also effect the fit of the boots.

Designed for aggressive use over varying terrain that consists of long-distance riding or other high concussion disciplines. Catered to handle high mileage (about 50-100+ miles) during a single day or over a week, these hoof boots have a low profile design and provide a secure fit to protect hooves from issues caused by increased riding time.

Best for low to mid mileage riding ( light turnout . These are not designed for aggressive or 23/7 use and should not be used in such cases.

Designed for near-constant 23/7 use to protect hooves during a variety of turnout conditions. A horse is more likely to damage or pull off a hoof boot by playing, chewing, rolling, etc., when turned out at liberty. Regularly take turnout hoof boots off for evaluation and maintenance, and allow them to air out in between uses to help prevent bacteria buildup.

These hoof boots provide the ultimate hoof comfort during medical treatments, stall rest, rehab, or trailering. Aimed to treat a variety of pathological issues to offer relief and concussion support, commonly to lame horses. Therapy hoof boots are not intended for riding or exercise and should not be used in such circumstances.

The revolutionary  Cavallo Trek Hoof Boot  has been specifically designed to accommodate the natural horse hoof and provide superior support and protection for the barefoot horse. Constructed with a unique TPU honeycomb upper that is lightweight, abrasion-resistant, and breathable. A soft foam collar protects the sensitive areas above the hoof while allowing natural expansion and contraction of the hoof wall to stimulate blood circulation and encourage healthy hoof tissue growth and development.

The Cavallo Trek Boot features built-in sole relief making it an ideal choice for a variety of situations including riding in all-terrain conditions, chronic hoof sensitivity or injury, and as a temporary replacement for a lost shoe.

Materials & Design:

The flexible and tough Pro Mesh Upper is exclusive to Cavallo boots and is constructed from thermoplastic urethane (TPU) that boasts easy to care for durability, weather-resistance and longevity. Tear-proof Pro Mesh contains no glues or adhesives, and features a unique honeycomb design that optimizes strength while minimizing weight. Sand and dirt cannot get trapped in the hexagonal holes, and cannot pass through the material, ensuring comfort for all-day rides.

The Cavallo Trek boot soles offer excellent traction while promoting natural movement while the outside tread pattern supports the hoof wall and takes on any terrain - the tread pattern repels build-up of mud, sand and debris! The center outsole is recessed to minimize pressure, and the built-in sole relief offers a raised inner rim that takes pressure off the sole, bars and frog to ensure comfort and support in all the right places!

Manufacturer's Warranty:

"Many people do indeed use Cavallo Boots (all styles) in combination with metal shoes, with great results. The Cavallo Boot TPU (thermo-plastic urethane) soles can assist in absorbing shock, which causes vibration up the horse’s structure. Boots also prevent sole bruising in rough terrain, on hard ground and asphalt. Cavallos are also used for shod horses for hoof rehabilitation and to provide increased comfort and protection during riding, training, transport, and turnout.

Cavallo cannot guarantee that boots used over metal shoes and studs will hold up over prolonged use due to the force of metal, protruding nails, or sharp edges Therefore, the warranty is void when boots are used over metal shoes. If booting over metal, we recommend using Cavallo Protection Pads to extend the life of your boot soles. Simply replace your Protection Pads from time to time, as needed, for maximum boot sole protection."

Sizing: Measure the weight-bearing hoof surface carefully after a fresh trim (do not include the heel bulbs). Hoof length and width are equal.

Customer Reviews

Previous feedback  .

Comments: These by far are my favorite version of Cavallos as an avid trail rider and Barefoot enthusiasts I definitely have tried my hand in all different kinds of boots, my favorite being cavallo brand, I have the simples, sport, and treks and the treks hold up the best and also I feel allow for better movement without any rubbing. Though I haven't had a problem with any of the versions, the ease and durability of these ones make them my favorite .  From:  Kelsey - Idaho, USA

Comments: Really impressed with these. I did not like the full leather as they were stiff and rubbed a bit. These are soft and I have even done a 50-mile ride with them on the back when my glue-ons came off. They held up well. I like these because they can be used 'to death' and you just change the velcro. Also, you don't need a perfect trim to keep using them. We use them on all the horses for their training rides. I recommend them to all the people in my bare hoof group that are just taking their horses barefoot and are rehabbing the shape. The slims are great for those in=between times too.   From: SaddLLP - Malibu, California, USA

Comments:  Just got a pair of these for front hoof boots.  Have put them through their paces in the past week -- stayed on snugly, no twisting and turning, no rubs on my horse's hooves.  I put on many miles through cross country mountain terrain, creeks, river bottoms and brush, hillsides and little bit of mud.  Happy customer. :) From: Amy - Oroville, CA, U.S.A.

The Cavallo Trek Regular Sole Horse Hoof Boot is simple to put on and remove, staying securely on the hoof and providing excellent protection for the barefoot horse on all terrain. Cavallo equine hoof boots offer traction and protection while trailering or breeding and can be carried along in the case of a thrown shoe. These Cavallo horse boots are lightweight and very durable with a waterproof thread, rustproof metal fittings and high-performance TPU insoles that require no inserts or shims to provide a proper fit. They feature a simple front fastening with industrial hook-and-loop closures and genuine leather uppers, making them comfortable, flexible and secure. With built-in sole relief, the pressure is taken off the sole, bar and frog, plus an added mold-in back flap for bulb protection and abrasion resistance. The all-terrain tread design of the Trek Hoof Boot minimizes buildup of mud, sand, and debris yet allows excellent traction through all types of terrain. The outside of the tread pattern supports the hoof wall, while the center of the insole is recessed to minimize pressure. By allowing expansion and contraction, the Cavallo hoof boots promote healthy hooves through increasing blood circulation.

Hiring Boots - Terms & Conditions

Available in 14 sizes!

The new Cavallo Trek hoof boot is available with a Regular Sole (the same sole and sizing as the Simple model) or a Slim Sole (the same sole and sizing as the Sport model). _______

Cavallo’s Trek Sole Hoof Boot is the most flexible, durable, breathable and user friendly addition to the Cavallo hoof boot collection. It offers the same all-terrain hoof protection for the barefoot horse as Cavallo's other models, but with a new lightweight mesh upper. The new upper is also more breathable and flexible, tear-proof and machine washable!

S haped for the rounder hoof, Trek sole Hoof Boots, with their honeycomb design, maximize strength and minimize weight for the comfortable performance your horse deserves. The Cavallo Trek offers comfort for chronic pain or hoof sensitivity, and can aid rehabilitation from injuries, abscesses, navicular disease, laminitis / founder, punctures, sole bruising and contracted heels.

Additionally, the Trek Hoof Boot can easily be adjusted for close contact and snug fit to individual horse’s hooves.  Can be used for protection during trailering and breeding or taken on the trail as a “spare tyre” for lost shoes.

The Trek and ELB (Entry Level Boots) are the best choices for finer-boned horses. Both styles have a unique front-closure system that allows for an extra-snug fit on the upper portion of the boot – creating a very secure fit.

On a finer-boned animal, the wrap-around Velcro closures can be drawn to the front on an angle downward when the boot is being fastened, creating an almost “V” neck at the boot collar, and tightening the fit.

Absolute godsend.

Published by Rebecca Jackson on 29th Feb 2024

We ordered a cavallo trek boot as my daughter’s horse was recovering from a very bad abscess but after the initial healing was able to ride. He had 3 shoes still on so this balanced him well. Purchasing this boot has been a godsend to her; she can school him and hack him and he’s very comfy in it. Hoof boutique were amazing too; gave such good advice with fitting too.

Enabled us to ride again

Published by Rebecca Jackson on 8th Feb 2024

My daughters horse has been suffering from a severe abscess and is now slowly recovering. The vet recommended we got one of these boots to enable her to still ride whilst his hoof recovers. Do take time to measure the hoof correctly and seek advice from Hoof Bootique - they were excellent getting back to me and so helpful. The boot is excellent quality and up to now has been brilliant.

Cavallo Trek boots for horse recovering from laminitis

Published by Clare on 4th Jul 2023

I was advised by my vet to purchase some hoof boots for my horse (recovering from a severe laminitis episode) as part of his rehabilitation. The Hoof Boutique was recommended to me word of mouth by a contact. The Hoof Boutique was the best most helpful website along with outstanding customer service and next day delivery. I would recommend them to anyone. I bought the Cavallo Trek as it suited the shape of my horses feet and looked like it gave a lot of sole support. It is a really well made product and fits brilliantly (make sure you follow all Hoof Boutique instructions on measuring and fitting).

Note: The data cut-off for this product was 2:15pm ET on March 27. ISW will cover subsequent reports in the March 28 Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) released its 38th report on the human rights situation in Ukraine on March 26, confirming several of ISW’s longstanding assessments about Russia’s systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in occupied territories and towards Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs). [1] The HRMMU report details activities between December 1, 2023 and February 29 2024, and includes new findings about Russia’s abuse of Ukrainian POWs during this timeframe, based on interviews with 60 recently released male POWs. [2] Nearly all of the POWs that HRMMU interviewed detailed how they were tortured by Russian forces with beatings and electric shocks and threatened with execution, and over half of the interviewees experienced sexual violence. HRMMU also reported that it has evidence of Russian forces executing at least 32 POWs in 12 different incidents during the reporting period and independently verified three of the executions. ISW observed open-source evidence of several POW executions during this reporting period: the execution of three Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne, Zaporizhia Oblast on December 27, 2023; the execution of one Ukrainian POW near Klishchiivka, Donetsk Oblast on February 9, 2024; the executions of three Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne, the execution of six Ukrainian POWs near Avdiivka, Donetsk Oblast, and the executions of two Ukrainian POWs near Vesele, Donetsk Oblast on or around February 18, 2024; and the execution of nine Ukrainian POWs near Ivanivske, Donetsk Oblast, on February 25. [3] The summary execution and mistreatment of POWs is a violation of Article 3 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. [4] The HRMMU report also details the forced Russification of Ukrainian populations in occupied areas, including the imposition of Russian political, legal, and administrative systems onto occupied Ukraine in violation of Russia’s international legal obligations as an occupying power. [5] ISW has reported at length on the specifics of Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine, consistent with the findings of the UN HRMMU report. [6]

Russian officials are tying the US and the West to a broader set of “terrorist” attacks against Russia following the Crocus City Hall attack, likely to intensify rhetoric about alleged Western and Ukrainian threats to generate greater domestic support for the war in Ukraine. The Russian Investigative Committee and Prosecutor General’s Office stated on March 27 that they will consider an appeal from the Russian State Duma to investigate American and Western financing and organization of terrorist attacks against Russia. [7] The Russian Investigative Committee, Prosecutor General’s Office, and the Duma Deputies that made the appeal did not explicitly reference the Crocus City Hall attack. [8] Kremlin officials have previously tied Ukraine and the West to the Crocus City Hall attack but have yet to make a formal accusation, and the Kremlin may refrain from issuing an official accusation as all available evidence continues to show that the Islamic State (IS) is very likely responsible for the attack. [9] Russian officials routinely describe Ukrainian military strikes against legitimate military targets in occupied Ukraine and Russia as terrorism and consistently claim that Western actors help organize these strikes. [10] The Kremlin likely aims to seize on wider Russian social fears and anger following the Crocus City Hall attack by portraying Ukraine, the US, and the West as immediate terrorist threats. The Kremlin likely hopes that perceptions of Ukrainian and Western involvement in the Crocus City Hall attack will increase domestic support for the war in Ukraine, and Russian officials will likely invoke a broader view of what they consider terrorism to further cast Ukrainians as terrorists and the West as a sponsor of terrorism. [11] The Kremlin may still formally accuse Ukraine of conducting the Crocus City Hall attack if it believes that these other informational efforts are insufficient to generate the domestic response it likely desires. [12]

Russian authorities are increasing legal pressure against migrants in Russia following recent Russian officials’ proposals for harsher measures against migrant communities in response to the March 22 Crocus City Hall attack. BBC News Russian Service stated that there has been a significant increase in the number of cases related to violations of the rules of entry for foreign citizens into Russia following the Crocus City Hall attack. [13] BBC News Russian Service reported on March 27 that 784 such cases have been registered since the morning of March 25, as compared with 1,106 during the entire previous week. A Russian lawyer who often works with Tajik citizens reportedly told BBC News Russian Service that over 100 people waited for a Moscow district court to hear their cases on March 25 alone and that Russian authorities are especially targeting migrants from Tajikistan during searches. BBC News Russian Service reported that representatives of the Tajik diaspora in Russia are expecting Russian authorities to conduct a large wave of deportations following the Crocus City Hall attack. A Russian insider source claimed on March 27 that unspecified actors gave the Moscow Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) an “unspoken” order to “not spare” migrants and for MVD employees to use their own judgement in the field. [14] The insider source claimed that a source suggested that Russian authorities are not preparing to conduct raids on migrant communities but will apply the “strictest measures” to migrants in “controversial situations.” Kremlin newswire TASS stated on March 27 that Russian police and Rosgvardia conducted a raid at the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast to check the documents of migrant workers, and Russian opposition outlet Baza reported that Russian authorities detained 21 people during the raid. [15] Several Russian ultranationalist milbloggers complained that the way Russian-language schools in Tajikistan are teaching about Russia’s historical imperial occupation of Tajikistan is discouraging Tajik migrants from integrating into Russian society, essentially blaming migrants for the alienation that Russian society subjects them to. [16] Select Russian officials recently called for the introduction of several anti-migrant policies, which Russian authorities are unlikely to enact given Russia’s reliance on migrants for its force generation and labor needs. [17] Russian authorities may continue the practice of raiding migrant workplaces and increase crackdowns at border crossings to temporarily placate emotional cries for retribution following the March 22 attack as the Kremlin continues to develop a cogent and practical response.

We do not report in detail on Russian war crimes because these activities are well-covered in Western media and do not directly affect the military operations we are assessing and forecasting. We will continue to evaluate and report on the effects of these criminal activities on the Ukrainian military and the Ukrainian population and specifically on combat in Ukrainian urban areas. We utterly condemn Russian violations of the laws of armed conflict and the Geneva Conventions and crimes against humanity even though we do not describe them in these reports.

Russian Main Effort – Eastern Ukraine

Russian Subordinate Main Effort #1 – Luhansk Oblast (Russian objective: Capture the remainder of Luhansk Oblast and push westward into eastern Kharkiv Oblast and northern Donetsk Oblast)

Positional engagements continued along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line on March 27, but there were no confirmed changes to the frontline in this area. Ukrainian and Russian sources stated that positional engagements continued northeast of Kupyansk near Synkivka and Lake Lyman; southeast of Kupyansk near Ivanivka; west of Kreminna near Terny and Yampolivka; and south of Kreminna near Bilohorivka. [18] Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces advanced near Terny, but ISW has not observed visual confirmation of this claim. [19] Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov stated that elements of the Chechen Akhmat Spetsnaz “Aida” detachment are operating near Bilohorivka. [20]

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces struck Kharkiv City with a D-30 universal joint glide munition (UMPB), a guided glide bomb, on March 27. [21] Ukrainian officials noted that the strike was the first Russian glide bomb strike against Kharkiv City since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. [22] Ukrainian Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration Head Oleh Synehubov stated that the UMPB D-30 has a range of up to 90 kilometers and that Russian forces can launch the bomb from aircraft or ground-based Smerch multiple rocket launch systems (MLRS). [23] Russian forces struck Myrnohrad, Donetsk Oblast with three UMPB D-30SN guided glide bombs on March 10. [24]

Russian Subordinate Main Effort #2 – Donetsk Oblast (Russian objective: Capture the entirety of Donetsk Oblast, the claimed territory of Russia’s proxies in Donbas)

Russian forces reportedly advanced west of Bakhmut, although there were no confirmed changes to the frontline in the area on March 27. Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces advanced west of Bakhmut along a railway line and a section of the O0506 (Khromove-Chasiv Yar) highway by 1.15 kilometers in depth and 1.85 kilometers in width. [25] A Russian milblogger claimed that elements of the 98th Airborne (VDV) Division are advancing near Ivanivske and are within 500 meters of the city limits of Chasiv Yar (west of Bakhmut). [26] Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu credited elements of the Russian 102nd Motorized Rifle Regiment (150th Motorized Rifle Division, 8th Combined Arms Army [CAA], Southern Military District [SMD]) with seizing Ivanivske on March 24, although ISW has yet to observe visual evidence confirming that Russian forces have seized Ivanivske. [27] Positional fighting continued northeast of Bakhmut near Vesele; northwest of Bakhmut near Bohdanivka; west of Bakhmut near Ivanivske; southwest of Bakhmut near Klishchiivka and Andriivka; and south of Bakhmut near Shumy and Pivdenne. [28] A Ukrainian military observer reported that Russian forces have intensified transfers of equipment and personnel along ground lines of communication (GLOCs) through Kadiivka, Pervomaisk, and Popasna (all east of Bakhmut), but did not specify the destination of these transfers. [29] Kadiivka, Pervomaisk, and Popasna all lie along the T0504 Luhansk City-Bakhmut highway that runs directly from the Russian rear in occupied Luhansk Oblast into Bakhmut, however.

Russian forces recently advanced west of Avdiivka amid continued positional fighting in the area on March 27. Geolocated footage published on March 27 indicates that Russian forces recently advanced within Berdychi (northwest of Avdiivka) and in Orlivka (west of Avdiivka). [30] Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces entered Semenivka (northwest of Avdiivka) and are attacking Ukrainian positions within the settlement but that Ukrainian forces are actively counterattacking in the area. [31] A Russian milblogger claimed that Russian forces advanced 200 meters west of Orlivka on the western bank of the Durna River, 200 meters west of Tonenke (west of Avdiivka), 200 meters in the direction of Umanske (west of Avdiivka), 300 meters south of Tonenke towards Pervomaiske (southwest of Avdiivka), and 100 meters south of Nevelske (southwest of Avdiivka). [32] ISW has not observed visual confirmation of these claims. Positional fighting continued northwest of Avdiivka near Berdychi and Semenivka; west of Avdiivka near Orlivka, Tonenke, and Umanske; and southwest of Avdiivka near Vodyane, Nevelske, and Pervomaiske. [33]

Russian forces recently advanced southwest of Donetsk City amid continued positional fighting west and southwest of Donetsk City on March 27. Geolocated footage published on March 27 indicates that Russian forces recently advanced within central Novomykhailivka (southwest of Donetsk City). [34] Positional fighting continued west of Donetsk City near Heorhiivka and Krasnohorivka and southwest of Donetsk City near Novomykhailivka and Pobieda. [35] Elements of the Russian 5th Motorized Rifle Brigade (1st Donetsk People’s Republic [DNR] Army Corps [AC]) are reportedly operating near Krasnohorivka. [36]

Positional engagements continued south of Velyka Novosilka near Staromayorske and Urozhaine in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area on March 27. [37]

cavallo trek hoof boots

Russian Supporting Effort – Southern Axis (Russian objective: Maintain frontline positions and secure rear areas against Ukrainian strikes)

Positional engagements continued in western Zaporizhia Oblast on March 27, but there were no confirmed changes to the frontline. Positional engagements continued near Robotyne, near Mala Tokmachka (northeast of Robotyne), northeast of Novoprokopivka (south of Robotyne), and northwest of Verbove (east of Robotyne). [38] Elements of the Russian 71st Motorized Rifle Regiment (42nd Motorized Rifle Division, 58th Combined Arms Army [CAA], Southern Military District [SMD]) reportedly continue operating within Robotyne. [39]

Positional engagements continued in east (left) bank Kherson Oblast, including near Krynky, on March 27. [40]

Russian Air, Missile, and Drone Campaign (Russian Objective: Target Ukrainian military and civilian infrastructure in the rear and on the frontline)

Russian forces conducted a series of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of March 26 to 27 and on March 27. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched 13 Shahed-136/131 drones from Kursk Oblast and that Ukrainian forces shot down 10 drones over Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv oblasts on the night of March 26 to 27. [41] Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drones struck civilian infrastructure in Izyum, Kharkiv Oblast. [42] Ukrainian Kharkiv Oblast Head Oleh Synehubov stated that a Russian Kh-35U subsonic anti-ship cruise missile struck Kharkiv City on the morning of March 27. [43] Ukraine’s Eastern Air Command reported that Ukrainian forces shot down an unspecified Russian cruise missile over Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on March 27. [44] Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces struck an industrial enterprise in Mykolaiv City with an Iskander-M ballistic missile on the afternoon of March 27. [45]

Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command Spokesperson Colonel Nataliya Humenyuk stated that Russian forces have stored “several dozen” Zircon missiles in military facilities in occupied Crimea. [46] Ukrainian Air Force Spokesperson Major Ilya Yevlash stated that Ukrainian air defense systems, such as Patriot and SAMP/T systems, can intercept Zircon missiles when they slow down to about 3,700 kilometers per hour on approach to a target. [47]

Russian Mobilization and Force Generation Efforts (Russian objective: Expand combat power without conducting general mobilization)

Russian Storm-Z personnel continue to complain about their poor treatment by the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) as the MoD tries to present the efficacy of its force generation and social benefit allocation system. Russian opposition outlet Mobilization News posted a video appeal from Storm-Z fighters from Kaluga Oblast on March 27 wherein one fighter claimed that after signing contracts with the Russian MoD, Russian command sent a Storm-Z unit of 230 people to the frontline, of whom only 38 survived combat. [48] The Storm-Z fighter complained that he has been unable to receive combat veteran status or promised payments from the Russian authorities for his service. [49] Mobilization News released another video on March 27 wherein relatives of killed and wounded Storm-Z fighters complain to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russian authorities have not issued the Storm-Z fighters combat status or granted payments in the event of their death or injury in Ukraine. [50] The relatives of the Storm-Z fighters blamed the Russian MoD and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for the poor treatment and lack of benefits for Storm-Z fighters. The Russian MoD relies heavily on Storm-Z recruits from penal colonies to carry out costly infantry-led frontal assaults against Ukrainian positions and is very unlikely to address complaints concerning their poor treatment. The Russian MoD claimed on March 27 that it is issuing electronic combat veteran certificates and streamlining and digitizing the process for veterans to obtain payments and social benefits — but these privileges evidently do not apply evenly to all personnel who have signed contracts with the Russian MoD. [51]

Russian news outlet Vedemosti reported that US-sanctioned Russian company Baikal Electronics is struggling to domestically package semiconductor chips to produce processors and that over half of its domestically produced processors are defective. [52] Vedemosti reported that Baikal Electronics began to experiment with domestically packaging chips in Russia at the end of 2021 and that outdated equipment and a lack of experienced employees caused the large amount of processor defects.

Russian Technological Adaptations (Russian objective: Introduce technological innovations to optimize systems for use in Ukraine)

Russian drone developer Albatross LLC told Kremlin newswire TASS that Russian forces used the Albatross M5 long-range reconnaissance drones to guide aviation and artillery strikes while repelling recent pro-Ukrainian Russian raids into Belgorod Oblast. [53] Albatross LLC noted that the modernized Albatross M5 drone has a maximum range of 60-80 kilometers.

Russian state news outlet RIA Novosti reported that Russian T-72B3, T-72B3M, T-80BVM, and T-90M tanks operating in Ukraine use Reflex-M guided weapon systems with the Invar-M/M1 anti-tank guided missiles to strike Ukrainian and Western-made vehicles. [54]

Ukrainian Defense Industrial Efforts (Ukrainian objective: Develop its defense industrial base to become more self-sufficient in cooperation with US, European, and international partners)

ISW is not publishing coverage of Ukrainian defense industrial efforts today.

Activities in Russian-occupied areas (Russian objective: Consolidate administrative control of annexed areas; forcibly integrate Ukrainian citizens into Russian sociocultural, economic, military, and governance systems)

ISW is not publishing coverage of activities in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine today.

Russian officials are weaponizing international responses to the Crocus City Hall attack to accuse the West of espousing Russophobic policies and to baselessly blame Ukraine of involvement in the attack. Russian Ambassador to Austria Dmitry Lyubinsky claimed on March 27 that while the Austrian government reacted to the Crocus City Hall attack, it did not use the words “terrorist attack” or condemn the attack. [55] Lyubinsky accused Austria of having “taken a very special position in its hypocrisy” and a “daze of permissiveness” towards Ukraine and reiterated the Kremlin narrative baselessly connecting Ukraine to the attack. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova reported that Russia has received 24-hour non-stop words of support from around the globe following the attack, but immediately pivoted to accuse Ukraine of involvement in the attack and blame NATO members of monopolizing the global fight against terror. [56]

Significant activity in Belarus (Russian efforts to increase its military presence in Belarus and further integrate Belarus into Russian-favorable frameworks and Wagner Group activity in Belarus)

Nothing significant to report.

Note: ISW does not receive any classified material from any source, uses only publicly available information, and draws extensively on Russian, Ukrainian, and Western reporting and social media as well as commercially available satellite imagery and other geospatial data as the basis for these reports.
