Our Marrakech to Agafay Desert day trip was fantastic. Hassan, our guide, was exceptional, adding so much insight and fun to the journey. The delicious lunch was a pleasant surprise, and the camel ride was a blast. The real highlight, though, was the adventurous quad bike experience – an absolute thrill. Hassan’s guidance truly made the trip unforgettable, creating a perfect balance of excitement and enjoyment in the mesmerizing desert landscape.

Our tour guide was both knowledgeable and welcoming. We had a captivating day in the Agafay Desert, exploring a Berber village where we enjoyed a truly delightful lunch amidst breathtaking scenery. We even embarked on a short hike up a mountain to another village, accompanied by one of the local women. With numerous opportunities to capture great photos along the way, it was truly a fantastic day of adventure.

We embarked on an amazing day trip, with Massan as our cheerful driver who promptly picked us up from the hotel. We traveled comfortably in a clean, secure, air-conditioned Toyota land cruiser. Our destination was the Agafay desert, just an hour’s drive from Marrakech. We reached the desert’s highest point easily, offering us a marvelous view of the expansive desert and an adjacent village. The climb wasn’t challenging, making it accessible for all. Lunch was a delightful experience within a Berber village. Hassan truly stood out – he’s not only friendly and approachable, but also remarkably knowledgeable. He eagerly answered all our queries and shared an abundance of historical and cultural insights. At the end of the day, we returned to our hotel content, albeit a bit tired.

There were three of us on the trip to the Agafay Desert, led by our guide Abdel. He was a really friendly guide who took the time to explain everything and ensure that everything went smoothly for us. We had such a great experience that we’re already thinking about coming back for the Sahara tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone.

Eliza Monroe

We had an amazing day excursion from Marrakech to the Agafay Desert with stunning views of the Atlas Mountains. The journey featured a brief camel ride and a truly tasty meal at a Berber family’s home. Our guide Lahcen made the experience enjoyable and informative, adding a warm and hospitable touch. The itinerary was well thought out by MDT, and their prompt responses during the booking stage were appreciated. I wholeheartedly suggest this company to others, and without a doubt, I’ll choose them again if I return to Morocco! Big thanks to MDT!

Camel Rides In The Agafay Desert

Camel rides are the most popular activity in the Agafay Desert but there is a lot of debate about whether this is ethical or not – PETA says that it isn’t. In contrast, the Born Free Foundation says camel riding is fine as long as the camel isn’t overloaded.

I typically don’t promote animal tourism on this site, however, almost every tour available in the Agafay desert includes camel riding. In my experience, you can talk to tour operators and skip the camel ride segment of the tour if you wish.

If you do choose to go for a camel trek, please ensure the animals are treated well and handled responsibly.

Agafay Desert Day Trip From Marrakech

Agafay desert  overview:.

Agafay desert day trip from Marrakech to experience the tranquility of the desert. Photograph the beautiful scenery of the surrounding countryside.

The Agafay desert is 40km from Marrakech. This desert is a barren plateau, not a Saharan desert. This semi-lunar terrain, which stretches for miles, is unforgiving in the summer but breathtaking in the cooler months. It is often overlooked by those traveling between the Atlas Mountains and Marrakech.

The lack of water has driven local villages out, leaving the area open for camel trekking and hiking. Walking on the seemingly endless plateau is easy against the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Following small river gorges and climbing small hills is easy and rewarding, with far-reaching views. On-route camel rides and picnic lunches are available.

Take photos of your party in front of the snow-covered High Atlas mountains. Sunset camel rides and tea are relaxing. Lunch in the most charming Agafay desert spot.

Return to Marrakech by afternoon.

Lunch In The Agafay Desert: Our Experience

Bradley and I were picked up at 11 am in a private car and we made our journey to the Agafay Desert. We were staying at the Aqua Mirage Hotel (Which I recommend), and it was around a 45 minute drive to the camp we would be having lunch at.

As you drive through the desert, you’ll come across a selection of camps, but we kept driving further in and this made me even more excited. The landscape of the desert as you drive is awesome, it looks like something from Mars or another planet. I’d never seen anything like it.

After driving for around 45 minutes, we arrived at the luxury desert camp and it was unlike anything I’ve ever been to before. You can actually stay overnight in this camp and when you visit for lunch, you’ll probably convince yourself to return!

The camp is beautifully secluded, quiet, and there is an awesome swimming pool (that’s actually a Jacuzzi too!). Imagine visiting in the summer when the temperature is 45 degrees outside and you’re chilling in this awesome pool. It was winter when we visited, so it was a little too cold to take a dip.

day trip from marrakech to agafay desert

The camp actually had some reservation work going on, which meant we got to dine by the pool and the choice to swim, but when the work is complete you’ll have your lunch separately on your own, surrounded by desert, pretty awesome!

The staff at the camp made us feel so welcome, and kept insisting we feel like we’re at home. They even gave us a tour of the camp and a sneak peak inside the tents (which are awesome!).

Next, we had some time to relax before lunch was ready, so Brad and I popped on the sun loungers and read our books whilst enjoying the sunshine and peace around us. As digital nomads, we rarely switch off, and the fact there was no WiFi truly was a blessing. It’s a perfect spot for a “digital detox”.

As we were relaxing, our host brought us some mint tea, which is a specialty in Morocco and it was delicious (not too sweet like lots of other places make it).

Around 1 pm, our host announced that lunch was ready and I truly didn’t know what to expect, other than authentic Moroccan food of course.

We were treated to a delicious 4 course meal. We started with a vegetable soup (that had orange in it, something I’ve never tried before), followed by an assortment of sauteed vegetables, followed by classic tagine, an amazing beef version (a specifically of the Marrakesh region) and a tomato and aubergine dish that oozed flavor. Just when we thought we couldn’t eat anymore, a dessert was delivered to us of traditional pastilla with honey and milk with almonds. Brad practically ate mine too (I was pretty darn full at this point!)

The service was exceptional, the staff truly want you to have a magical experience. After lunch, we relaxed for a while to let the food settle. The guys at the camp assured us there was no rush on leaving, (I did not want to leave at all!), but when we felt ready, our driver was waiting for us and we thanked our hosts and made our journey back through the desert.

All in all it was a fabulous day and as far as an Agafay Desert day trip went, I think I got a great taste of what it’s like to experience the desert. A delicious lunch with those views is more than I could have imagined and I’d 100% repeat the experience in the future.

What I really love about this Agafay desert trip is that it’s an “all-year” activity. We visited in winter and experienced highs of 22 degrees Celsius (which is perfect for me!), but just imagine the temperatures in summer, autumn and spring. It’s an awesome activity, regardless of the time of year you visit.

Don’t forget to bring a camera, you’re going to want to take lots of great pictures!

Atlas mountains and agafay desert day trip from marrakech – itinerary.

You may have very limited time in Marrakech and so are unable to reach the Saharan sand dunes in the south. But you can still take a short, alternative trip to the so-called “ Marrakech Desert ”, Agafay , for an impression of the silence and the majesty of the desert.

Your pick-up from your hotel/riad will be at 9 am for the drive to Agafay. Your day trip starts with a wonderful drive through a road shaded by lush vegetation, and olive and orange orchards.

Your first stop is Tahanaout village , where you will have the opportunity to visit an argan oil co-operative . Here, you will witness the fascinating process of extracting the famous argan oil , an essential ingredient for culinary and cosmetic purposes.

From here, you travel past stunning waterfalls and small Berber villages to get a glimpse of local life and learn about the rich Berber culture and traditions thriving in the Atlas Mountains. We visit the man-made reservoir of Lalla Takerkoust , which supplies Marrakech with water. The city relies on that snow each year to refill this lake. There is a great demand for water in this most popular city in Morocco with all its roads, pools and golf courses

Agafay is a rocky, dry, moon-like desert, offering unexpected and splendid views of the High Atlas Mountains , snow-capped in winter. It is a mineral universe only disturbed by a few flocks of sheep passing by in their search for grass and herbs.

In the middle of this desert lies an unexpected oasis, a place of calm and peacefulness . Here, even surrounded by such barrenness, frogs and turtles live and breed, whilst plants can also flourish.

On arrival at the Agafay nomad camp, you can enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch. This is, of course, followed by a glass of the famous Moroccan mint tea and some free time to relax or admire the sunset. After relaxing a moment, you can take a camel ride in the desert, before returning to Marrakech.

Actually, it could be quite the opposite. Our team makes sure to select the best quality accommodations for our clients, and those tend to get booked full pretty quickly, that’s why it’s not always easy for us to accommodate last-minute bookings.

Therefore, you shouldn’t expect a lower price for such inquiries, but instead a higher one maybe. To avoid such incidents, we strongly advise you to book your tour with us early on, so that we will be able to pick out the best accommodations for you and offer you an unforgettable Morocco experience.

Morocco’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism to meet its financial needs. To put it another way, the Moroccan government wants tourists to feel comfortable and secure while spending their holiday and money in the country.

As a result, it devotes a significant amount of resources, particularly human resources, to ensure that all tourists are secure while in Morocco ; this includes tourist police and highly qualified guides who have been accredited by the government after undergoing training.

In terms of extremism and crime rates, we can state that the occurrence of such crimes is similar to that of many European countries, as evidenced by several statistics: low and uncommon.

You could enjoy traveling on your own once you’ve learned your way around and been acquainted with the local culture. You’ll be OK as long as you’re comfortable with it and stay away from the shady areas.

It will also allow you to save some money. However, some destinations require the assistance of a professional guide; you will most likely realize this once you are in such a location, particularly that outside of towns, such as the desert, where you will need a guide to assist you with camels and other items.

We’ll ask you for a deposit to secure your tour with Let’s Visit Morocco once we’ve confirmed an itinerary that works for you/your group (tours shown on our website can be changed based on your needs). We ask that you pay the remaining balance of your trip reservation at the beginning of your tour in Morocco.

Our agency works with customers from all over the world, in order to provide personalized trips to suit your needs. You can choose one of our many scheduled trips that can have as a starting point either Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca, or other cities. Our Morocco tours will allow you to experience the true genuine Moroccan culture, which will be an experience that stays with you for a lifetime. Starting from the desert trips, the camel rides, the mint tea, and the imperial cities: you won’t feel a second of boredom in Morocco!

Agafay Desert Day Trip

agafay desert day trip

One-Day trip from Marrakech to Agafay Desert

Overview: full-day trip to the agafay desert and the atlas mountains from marrakech.

Agafay Desert Day trip from Marrakech- Agafay Desert is absolutely one of the best-hidden gems in the Marrakech area. Even more than a hidden gem, it is one of the places where you could rest your soul and ears from the Marrakech nosios. The rocky surroundings are beautiful here, and you’ll never get bored.

One of the advantages of the Agafay Desert is visitors can reach this spot on a single-day trip from Marrakech. This last is only a one-hour drive from the Medina of Marrakech, Unlike the other Deserts ( Merzouga and Zagora).

Merzouga and Zagora Desert offer much more than Agafy, but what if you haven’t enough time to go on a 3-day journey to Merzouga ? Thanks to Agafay and its proximity to Marrakech. After all, if you have the time, we recommend visiting the Golden Dunes Desert of Merzouga rather than Agafay.

When deciding on a Sahara Desert trip from Marrakech, you must consider how much time you want to spend in a vehicle. You may waste most of your time inside the car, with little time to enjoy the sights. This full Agafay Desert day trip and the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech will take you on a tour of the Berber Villages of the Atlas Mountains and then back to Marrakech via our beautiful spot (Only a 3-hour drive & both ways).

The best thing about this full-day trip from Marrakech is that our itinerary included the Atlas Mountains and the Berber Villages, not just the Desert of Agafay. Instead of taking a day trip to the Agafy Desert and another one to the Atlas Mountains, this itinerary does both in a single day without any feeling of rash and saves you time and money.

In case our itinerary does not meet your requirements, contact us. We’re flexible, and our itinerary can modified to meet your needs.

Note, if you want to enjoy your Desert trip experience the best way, we propose staying overnight to take in the incredible nightfall. The charming nightfall atmosphere is something completely different than the daytime.

Is Agafy Desert worth a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, Agafy Desert is worth taking a day trip from Marrakech. The Agafay Desert has a fabulous ambiance that we recommend everyone experience at least once. We agree that Agafay does not warrant a whole day due to the limited activities available, but with the Atlas Mountains, it deserves a full-day trip.

Does Agafay offer a similar experience to Merzouga?

The differences between the Merzouga and Agafay Desert are huge. The golden dunes of Merzouga can reach 200 meters high, while the Agafay Desert landscape does not provide any. The Agafy Desert can be a great alternative to Merzouga only when you have no time for the 3 Or 4-day trip south of the Sahara.

Callie Stafford.

My partner and I had a fantastic trip to the Agafay Desert and the Atlas Mountains. Our tour guide, Zaki, was superb, providing so much information and delight to the tour. The delicious lunch was a delightful surprise, as was the camel ride- We loved everything about this Private Agafay Desert day trip. Thank you, Zaki and the Morocco Travel Tour Agency.

Silas Walker.

This Agafay Desert day trip was the best part of our stay in Marrakech. The trip was marvelous, and our guide, Zaki, was very knowledgeable about the Desert area. We visited the big Atlas Mountains and stopped for lunch with a Berber family in a small Village- this was the best experience ever. After lunch, we went to the Desert with Zaki; the area is magnificent. We rode the camels and tried the quads. We also had dinner here before returning to Marrakech.

Whitney Lane.

The entire experience was fabulous and definitely something to behold. I booked this for our family of 2 Adults and 3 Kids and loved the whole experience. Our guide was a young man named Mohammad, and despite that our hotel was in a difficult location to get, he made sure we were safely picked up and dropped off. We plan to return to Marrakech shortly and will arrange our full trip with this agency.

Day trip from Marrakesh to Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains

Marrakech to Agafay

Table of Contents

Commonly when we think of Morocco, it’s all about the breathtaking architecture, spices, chaotic cities, lovely handicrafts and a rainbow of colours. But… you should know that there is also an adventurous side to the country. And, sometimes a simple day trip can lead you to discover many hidden gems.

Since this time I was staying 5 days in Marrakech , I decided to try one of the many off-roading adventures that Morocco has to offer: Day trip from Marrakech to Agafay Desert and Lower Atlas Mountains.

Before we dive into off-roading in Morocco

day trip from Marrakesh

Well, while I can confirm from my personal experience that road-tripping in Morocco is definitely the best way to capture the beauty of the country, I feel like I must say that off-roading in Morocco requires the presence of a person who is able to navigate in the least accessible places. I mean, it is very difficult to get orientated around the desert and mountain areas since there are no points of references to make navigation easy.

And this is why we decided to rely on one of the most organized tour operators of the country, Morocco Tours 4×4, for our day trip from Marrakech to the Agafay desert and the lower Atlas Mountains. This was certainly one of the best day trips from Marrakech that we could ever imagine!

Our Morocco Tours 4X4 package included:

What to do in Morocco

  • Exploring Agafay Desert
  • Lunch at Berber Village at the lower Atlas Mountain
  • Camel ride and Moroccan tea tasting

First step of our trip from Marrakesh to Agafay desert and the lower Atlas Mountains

day trip from Marrakesh

We were staying in a Riad called Dar Lalla F’dila . Since it’s inside the medina of Marrakesh , very close t o Jemma El Fna Square , our guide Ahmed Timegharine came to pick us up at the riad.

Well, if you haven’t already heard, vehicles aren’t allowed in the medina and it’s very easy to get lost in the medina, so, we truly appreciated his help on walking us to the vehicle.

Our trip from Marrakesh to the Agafay Desert started exactly at nine am.

Leaving the city behind, we slowly got into the arid area as we approached the desert and suddenly the street turned off onto a gravel road.

Day trip from Marrakesh. First stop: Agafay Desert

Agafay desert

Agafay desert, located only 30 kilometres south of Marrakech (45 minutes by car), was the first stop of our day trip. Contrary to what one can imagine, it isn’t made of sand dunes, but instead it’s a stony desert forming strange rolling brown hills . This is why you need a good 4X4 vehicle for this off-roading adventure in Morocco.

How to Travel budget in MArrakech

I can’t tell you how long this stop will take. It depends on how many photos you want to take and what you want to do there. We stayed about 3 hours because we stopped many times to take photos and to have some short walks. Our guide was simply fantastic. Every time we asked him to stop, he patiently did. Moreover, he had a good mastery of English, so he explained everything very clearly. We really enjoyed our time with him.

By the way, quod and camel rides are one of the many things to do at the Agafay Desert.

Day trip from Marrakesh. Second stop: Berber house in Tagoumt Village

day trip to Agafay

Our four-wheeler took us then to a Berber house in Tagoumt Village , in the lower Atlas Mountains. Here we had a relaxing lunch prepared by the Berber family members. The dining room was very cosy. It had a strong Moroccan feel. Even though we were the only guests that day, they had prepared tons of food.

Everything was delicious. I want to say that here we had the most tasty lamb tajine in Morocco. it tasted better than in the tourist areas.

Morocco road trip

After the lunch, we were given some time to go around the village. It was a pleasant walk. Some children of the village joined us, too. If you are planning to go on this day trip from Marrakesh, I suggest that you take something to give to the children. They will highly appreciate it. Unfortunately, we had nothing, so we left nothing.

Day trip from Marrakesh. Third stop: Camel ride

camel ride in Agafay

After the lunch break at the lower Atlas Mountains, we drove for about twenty minutes to reach a hut filled with camels. Our package with Morocco Tours 4X4 included a half an hour camel ride. Well, you don’t get far with a half an hour of camel ride, but it gives you a taste of what it means to ride a camel and of the characteristic of the surrounding areas.

After the camel ride we were offered some Moroccan mint tea . We spent another hour here before heading back to Marrakesh again.

day trip from Marrakesh

We got back to Marrakech around 5 pm. So now, don’t worry about how to get from Marrakech to agafay desert. It really very simple with “Marocco Tours 4X4”. They provide quality cost effective solutions tailored to your individual needs.

Daily Schedule Agafay Desert Day Trip from Marrakech:

Daily Schedule Agafay Desert Day Trip from Marrakech:

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility of the desert and countryside with this day trip to Lake Takerkoust and Agafay Desert. They will pick you up from your accommodation at 9am and take you to the west of Marrakech. The route is shaded by lush vegetation, olive and orange groves and passes through the occasional village of Ait Imour from where we will leave the road and drive through a completely different landscape of stone desert, light brown and arid plateaus, Bedouins, oases and then high hills with panoramic views of the High Atlas. A few hours later small patches of green will begin to appear and not long after you will be back on the paved road bordered by the old eucalyptus. It will reach the edge of the Lalla Takerkoust lake, built as a dam from which Marrakech receives its electricity. Through small hills along the dam you will reach the Nfis valley passing through Berber villages and arriving at a Berber family house. You can visit the house and have lunch inside. After lunch, you will have the chance to walk for 2 hours with Saida or Hamid (not included in the price) and climb for an hour to visit one of the oldest villages at the foot of the largest forest in the Atlas Mountains. After the visit of the traditional oil mill, you will descend through olive trees and terraced fields to the only house near the river Nfis from where your journey will continue to Ouiragan through the forest, traditional salt pools before arriving in Asni, a small town (market on Saturday) overlooking Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Then you will cross the Moulay Brahim gorges, the Ghighaya valley and Tahanouete before arriving in Marrakech.

Currently trying to decide if we should book a multi day tour to see the Sahara region with a day trip to Essaouire, or spend more time in Essaouira and look closer to Marrakech , like Agafay, for a desert stay.

If we choose an option closer to Marrakesh for the desert, that leaves us with some other days for overnight days outside the city center. There are so many alluring options. We’d love to hear suggestions for things you love or places we should avoid.

Many thanks for your thoughts and ideas!

"Currently trying to decide if we should book a multi day tour to see the Sahara region"

I suspect you are looking at the big dune areas of either Erg Chebbi near Merzuga or the Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid. Both these places are not in the Sahara desert. They are 100’s of kilometers from the Sahara desert.

But if you just want spectacular dunes and a nice desert experience, both Ergs woukd be amazing. I like the Erg Chebbi by Merzuga much better. Plan for 4 or 5 days to do this round trip from Marrakech . With the 3 day trip , you have one day’s just after breakfast to well after dark drive and one only most if the day drive. So you barely get to see the dunes for more than an hour or 2 in daylight.

The Agafay is not a desert but an area of dirt where little grows (an area of mud if it is raining).

You can do the Erg Chebbi desert trip but plan 4 days for it - lots of great places to visit on the way there and back

@comicman Do many hotels in Marrakech struggle to keep the AC operating well? I’m a teacher, so June, when we let school out for summer holidays is really my only window for travel to locations far from home. We are coming as early in the year as we are able. I’m following other posts in the forum closely as I’m having a terribly difficult time choosing between riads in Marrakech.

The more expensive places should have good air conditioning. As riads common areas are open it would be hotter there.

Why I do hotels mid May to mid September.
