Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002, by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen. They have maintained career success, with their symphonic metal, especially with their latest release “The Quantum Enigma” making it into the Top 40 of seven different countries.

Mark Jansen led a group of musicians in 2002 complete with a small string section made up of three violins two violas two cellos and an upright bass to record a two-song demo entitled “Cry for the Moon” in 2002. As a result of this, they were fortunately signed to Transmission Records. “The Phantom Agony” released on June 5th 2003, was the first full-length studio album by Epica. It went to number 8 in the Dutch Album Chart. Their following album “Consign to Oblivion” which was released on April 21st 2005 made it to number 12 in the Dutch Album Chart but also charted in Belgium and France. Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman were cited as major inspirations. Following the release of this album, Epica embarked on their first tour of North America with Kamelot.

Their third album, “The Divine Conspiracy” released on September 7th 2007 saw the band do their first headline tour of North America. The first single from the album “Never Enough” was released almost a month before on August 10th 2007. The album, again earned the band more chart success with the album now charting in Germany and Switzerland. They released a live album called “The Classical Conspiracy” on May 8th 2009, which charted in the Netherlands, France, Germany and Switzerland.

They returned to the studio in 2009 to work on their album “Design Tour Universe”. Upon release, it earned very similar acclaim to the previous record, of course is still an incredible achievement to maintain such a loyal fanbase. Three years later on March 9th 2012, Epica released “Requiem for the Indifferent” which charted in nine countries. All music stated that it is a “typically elaborate and ambitious affair, incorporating copious amounts of choral work and classical arrangements into the band’s neatly established blend of goth, progressive and symphonic metal.” For this album, the band did a world tour, this time, visiting South America.

It was “The Quantum Enigma” that proves that Epica are relentlessly sticking to their art and taking the world by storm with their music as it became their most successful record yet. Released on May 2nd 2014, it made it to number four in the Dutch Album Charts this time around, charting in the US and UK too

Live reviews

After a few years of waiting I could finally see Epica again at the Oosterpoort in Groningen. The German band Xandria was present as support. From both bands' performances, I had to miss a little bit. because of the interviews with guitarist Isaac Delahaye (Epica) and singer Dianne van Giersbergen (Xandria).

Having done several shows in the past 12 years, including Retrospect, Epica has done this show really well. Because the band loves our cold little country so much, they had therefore this show scheduled for their fans. Soprano singer Simone Simons and rhythm guitarist/growler Mark Jansen, still now very well, just like the other members (keyboardist Coen Janssen, bassist Rob van der Loo and drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek) how to throw a party with their fans.

The music is, as we can expect from Epica, melodic and symphonic metal, sometimes with death- and gothic metal influences, while the lyrical themes are about religion, society, politics and philosophy, but sometimes, they also have some personal touches.

The sound during the show was wonderful, although I had to wear earplugs mandatory, because I would otherwise become deaf too fast. During the silence, I could take them out for a while, so that I could hear and understand what the band all said to us.

As always, the band does a great stage act, so I can only be positive about it. What I also liked was the drum solo of Ariën, right after "Cry For The Moon", which he had also done at Retrospect.

Xandria is also a must. The word was of course done by Dianne in her native language (Dutch), while they did their songs in English, which of course is quite logical in the metal music, but also, the men of the band (guitarist Marco Heubaum and Philip Restemeier, drummer Gerit Lamm and bassist Steven Wussow) know how to encourage us to rock with them, haha.

Conclusion: from my perspective, it became a top performance, all in all.

Metallica, Apolcalytica and now Epica. All cards on the table – their music is completely epic. Their title isn’t a lie! Hailing from the Netherlands, their career spanning twelve years thus far, Epica are really making a buzz in the metal scene with their huge symphonic metal. Huge chugging palm muted distorted guitar chords, fused with huge orchestral textures layered on top of what is going on. They of course have a secret weapon, in the form of Simon Simons, the soprano singer fronting the band, whose range is utterly stratospheric, her voice reaching extremely high notes, adorned by a classically trained falsetto.

“Unleashed” is the song that immediately sounds like something from Phantom of the Opera Simons, using her classically trained falsetto, alongside her belting range, which flows over the chorus of this compound time metal hit, which makes you want to stand on the top of a mountain in Middle Earth using your longbow against ring wraiths.

Who knows, maybe they will grace the BBC with the BBC Philharmonic, although, you’ve gotta hand it to keyboard player Coen Jansseen making it sound like a full orchestra is coming out of his keyboard! More Timps please!

Maravilhoso poder conhecer uma banda que amo tanto em um show ao vivo. O show foi ótimo, tocando músicas do novo CD quase na integra, com umas poucas memórias do passado. Único ponto realmente ruim foi o local do show no Tropical Butantã, não cheguei muito cedo, confesso, mas mesmo assim havia uma fila enorme e cerca de 30 minutos para o tempo marcado ao show começar. Conseguiram felizmente colocar todo mundo para dentro rapidinho. Consequentemente fiquei mais distante do palco e o palco era baixo, pessoas mais altas na frente facilmente tampavam a visão completa do palco e foi necessário muito empurra empurra para conseguir encontrar algum lugar onde pudesse ver o show mesmo que de maneira ruim. O palco deveria ter pelo menos uns 60 centímetros, talvez um metro a mais, e nem sei se a casa comportaria esta altura. Ou ter o piso em escada invertida, com mais grades, para que a experiência das pessoas no fundo não fosse tão ruim.

Freakin' good show last night @ l'Impérial despite Epica not playing, The Agonist were in fire, they played an extra 15 mins which was really appreciated and it was awesome. Eluveitie played their Pure Fucking Folk Metal and Rocked the place. Awesome night, and to the 250 people that got their tickets reimbursed because Epica wasn't playing, You fucking Suck!.. My favorite symphonic metal band, Epica, along with Dragonforce and Dagoba. Three amazing bands coming to Lisbon. So, the decision to go was easy to make, and it was a fantastic experience. Dagoba played only five songs but the energy displayed was that of a headliner. Dragonforce played a couple more songs than Dagoba, but also with technical and captivating mastery. And then Epica. Each band member connect very well with the audience and among themselves. The chemistry is contagious and crowd and band feel like a true family. With heavy songs combined with lighter ones, it is a show to remember and that I will revisit in my mind many times in the months to come.

The show was good, but the people... ugh terrible! It made my experience not so enjoyable. The promoter should not allow alcoholic drinks, or at least take drunk people outside. There were two guys totally drunk pushing people (myself included), disturbing the ones who wanted to enjoy the show. What is the point of going to a concert if you're too wasted to even listen?... Besides that, the venue was small and a nightmare for short people like myself.

Bands were on stage on time, really appreciated! Good sound, good light arrangements.

Après Myrath, excellent groupe que je connaissais déjà et qui ne m'a pas déçue, Vuur n'était pas à mon goût mais le grand Epica n'en a paru que plus magistral : une chanteuse pleine de charisme et de générosité, avec une voix qui porte au-dessus de la puissance musicale, des musiciens virtuoses et parfois drôles, un Mark Jansen toujours juste et puissant au chant guttural... Le public était ultra-réceptif... Bref, une bonne dose de catharsis !

It was a nice surprise to discover Diablo Blvd. a very good belgium Band which i enjoyed much.

I came for DragenForce and despite the absence of Vadim (Keyboard), it was terrific good to hear and see them again.

Epica was also quite good, they started strognly and finished well. Last album does not seem to be my preference. The show was good but the best music remains by far Dragonforce! this constellation of the 3 groups is a very one! Norbert

Amazing concert! I originally bought the tickets for Powerwolf, but Epica and Beyond the Black were awesome as well. In the beginning there were some technical issues with the sound, but this was fixed rather quickly. I really liked the people who worked there, very friendly. The pauses between the bands could have been shorter, and the drinks were really expensive. Nontheless we had a great evening, thank you!

Asked how the heavier-sounding tracks on "The Holographic Principle" have been going over live on the band's current tour, Simone told A Music Blog, Yea! : "Amazing. There are some songs, like 'Beyond The Matrix' and 'Ascension' , that just are really made to be live songs. And that's also a little bit how we kind of went about when we were writing the songs and finalizing them together with our producer, Joost [ Van Den Broek ], that we wanted these songs to become live songs. But then when we're on the stages, songs like 'Ascension' and 'Beyond The Matrix' [and] 'Divide And Conquer' are amazing live songs. The fans also really welcome those and go crazy. Yesterday, we had so many brutal-looking metalheads jumping up and down during 'Beyond The Matrix' . I'm, like, 'That's a pretty gay song, but okay.' [ Laughs ]"

Simons told Metal-Rules.com about the lyrical themes covered on "The Holographic Principle" : "It isn't a concept CD as the story is not in a chronological order of events from beginning to the end. Some songs deviate from the idea. 'The Holographic Principle' is, basically, that we are living in a hologram. With the new technology and virtual reality glasses we realize reality is generated so perfectly that you can no longer tell the difference, so can reality also be a hologram?"

EPICA – Omega Alive Universal [Livestream Review] (June 12th, 2021)

The concert as a grand spectacle and the sub-genre of symphonic metal are companions almost to the point of necessity, and have been since the latter’s inception during the late 1990s. While the specific tale of Epica only began in 2003, a good while after the likes of Kamelot (whom inspired the band’s name), Nightwish and Rhapsody Of Fire had done much to pioneer the mixture of lofty orchestral arrangements with a driving and technically ambitious metallic style set, their more melodic death metal tinged niche with a penchant for Middle Eastern musical influences has set them apart from the crowd ever since and arguably ingratiated them a bit more to the arena-friendly crowd within metal circles. With nearly 20 years now in the rear view (or longer if counting mastermind Mark Jansen ’s time with After Forever , of which Epica could be considered a continuation of sorts) and the still ongoing pandemic lockdowns hindering the prospect of an immediate tour in support of their 8 th studio album “Omega,” this elite merger of classicism and modernity has now become the latest to endeavor upon the popular medium of online streaming to reach the masses.

In keeping with the cinematic tendencies of their signature sound, Epica has opted to present their first concert of 2021 in Omega: Alive Universal in a matter befitting the big screen, complete with elaborate scene transitions in between their massive anthems set on a colossal stage with numerous visual accents to entice the eyes. The mysticism that permeates the game of notes beneath front woman Simone Simons ’ angelic mezzo soprano would be accented by an elaborate array of stage ornaments, most notably a pair of cobra statues at each side, towering above a collection of metal sculptures. Each object present on the stage would serve to accent the orderly placement of the band, as well as give the entire space itself the sense of being a world unto itself, particularly in how the pyrotechnics would seem to animate each segment of the whole. Combined with an ensemble cast of ballet dancers and acrobats, the performance often took on the appearance of a circus event within a piece of musical theater, yet also carried with it a darker, Gothic-tinged demeanor that set it apart from even the most artsy of carnival endeavors.

Despite the extremely visual character of Epica ’s presentation, in most other respects this concert checked all of the boxes of a typical touring event. Having come about just under 4 months since the release of their latest studio album “Omega,” the setlist tended to favor said album with a strong showing of brand new material to the live setting. The opening trifecta of the grand symphonic prelude “Alpha – Anteludium” , the fast-paced crusher “Abyss Of Time – Countdown To Singularity” and the more nuanced and mid-paced yet highly catchy banger “The Skeleton Key” come off as fairly similar to what Nightwish has been doing in recent years, though here the guitar work carries a greater role in shaping the arrangement and the dueling vocal personas of Simons ’ consonant beauty to Mark Jansen ’s guttural beast largely steal the show. Later entries from the “Omega” arsenal would prove even more involved, with two towering epic length compositions in “ Kingdom Of Heaven – Part 3 – The Antediluvian Universe” and “Omega – Sovereign Of The Sun Spheres” being flawlessly realized relative to their studio incarnations, along with a brilliant A Capella performance in “River” to allow a short respite from the pomp and bombast.

As a veteran act with an extensive body of work at their backs, Epica would also take care to include a solid selection of classic offerings from their past. Up tempo riff monsters such as “Unchain Utopia” off 2014’s “The Quantum Enigma” and the heavy thrashing classic “The Obsessive Devotion” off 2007’s “The Divine Conspiracy” would up the aggression factor significantly and stand among the more metallic moments of the event, with Mark Jansen ’s forbidding vocal presence matching and occasionally surpassing Simons ’ share of attention. The hyper-thrashing death metal tendencies of “Victims Of Contingency” takes the aforementioned shift in focus to its logical conclusion and serves as the apex point of aggression for the performance, and fittingly concludes with it raining on the stage. But for those who wanted the whole package, from the bestial heaviness to the serene consonance, the standout moment would be “Kingdom Of Heaven” off 2009’s “Design Your Universe,” which also stood as the most musically elaborate offering of the bunch, freewheeling through a wide variety of metallic expressions in Dream Theater -like fashion and saw lead guitarist Issac Delahaye rivaling Petrucci during his solo section.

The sheer scope of what was witnessed on June 12 th of 2021 courtesy of The Netherlands’ hottest symphonic export is difficult to quantify in words, but suffice it to say, it was an event for the ages. The songs included in the show are each a testament as to how far metal has evolved as an art form over the past five decades, to the point where it is approaching the level of intrigue that was usually reserved to the classics of the 18 th and 19 th centuries. There were no slouches to speak of in this finely tuned symphonic metal machine, as the blinding speed and fury of the riff work was matched at every turn by a precision-based rhythm section courtesy of drummer Arien Weesenbeek and bassist Rob van der Looh that held the glue together, while keyboardist Coen Janssen proved to be almost as dynamic of a stage presence as the two vocalists in congress as he frequently cycled back and forth from a spinning stationary keyboard setup to a number of different handheld equivalents. For those fans of Epica or metal with a symphonic edge of any stripe, if this event has yet eluded you, it’s absolutely more than worth the price of admission and will only be available until just before midnight on June 15 th .

It was definitely a visual feast. I do love the new album. It is good to hear those songs. I couldn’t for the life of me tell if they ever playing live per se. Did they record new versions of the songs in the studio and then mimed them like a music video here? Were some of them live and some not? It just seemed like everything sounded too good to be live. That is what raced through my head throughout. Like I couldn’t see any microphones or anything near the children’s choir. I also doubt the dude was actually playing live the piano while it was on fire. Maybe I was expecting something else. I still liked it and I don’t regret paying the money for it. I just would love to know how they pulled it off. I just keep thinking this was very long elaborate music video so to speak.

Aha. So none of them were new versions of the songs? It was basically a real long music video? That’s fine, but I was expecting a live event.

From everything I’ve seen and heard in interviews, it’s a mixture of both. You can hear the smoke machine at some parts and the songs sound quite different from the studio versions. So I’m fairly convinced a lot of that is live. On the other hand the choirs (kids and adults) sound exactly like the studio version so I think that’s just lipsyncing. And they were definitely lipsyncing/miming during the “rain”.

Logistically it wouldn’t make sense to rerecord in a studio when you already have a controlled environment (the stages they performed on). It’s likely multiple live takes that they then stitched together (alongside the more cinematic parts like the rain and possibly piano on fire section) to make it flow smoothly.

EPICA To Support METALLICA For Upcoming M72 World Tour Shows In Paris And Hamburg

Symphonic metal titans Epica have been announced as direct support for Metallica at Paris’ Stade de France and Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion during Metallica’s M72 world tour.

Vocalist Simone Simons comments: “We are beyond excited to share the stage with the legendary Metallica, that has had a great influence on the whole music scene, including Epica.”

Epica recently concluded the successful Epic Apocalypse Tour throughout Europe with several sold-out shows. They will release several live-singles within the next months before finally entering the studio again.

Gloria Trevi reveals 2024 Mi Soundtrack World tour with epic helicopter entrance at LA event

Gloria Trevi, known as "The Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop ," is hitting the road to go on tour at the top of 2024.

Arriving via helicopter to flocks of guests and fans eagerly awaiting the Mexican singer-songwriter at Peacock Place in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, Trevi announced she’s embarking on the Mi Soundtrack World Tour in January. 

“This night features a lot of nuances for me because the world is going through a very difficult moment,” Trevi said onstage in Spanish. “Every day we wake up to headlines in the news that leave goosebumps on our skin and the latest, a war, when all we want is love and peace.” 

Trevi hopes her tour will be a light in people's lives and that it speaks to new generations of listeners, as well as OG fans. "It's universal," Trevi said. "It's going to be a very beautiful tour." 

The 32-city U.S. leg of her tour kicks off in Hidalgo, Texas, on Jan. 26 and concludes Sept. 22 in Auburn, Washington.

Trevi has tapped pop singer-songwriter MAR Solís, daughter of Marco Antonio Solís, as her opening act for several shows on the tour.

Trevi will perform in major cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas, New York, Las Vegas and Denver. The 55-year-old will make a triumphant return to the Coliseo de Puerto Rico after an emotional and moving opening of her previous tour, Isla Divina World Tour, which concluded earlier this year.

The concept of Trevi's tour is inspired by the release of her recent albums, "Mi Soundtrack (Vol. 1)" and "Mi Soundtrack (Vol. 2)." They're compilations of newly recorded versions of her iconic hits "Poder y Fama," "Dr. Psiquiatra" and "Con los Ojos Cerrados," among others.

Trevi will also give life to newly released songs including "Medusa," "Que Se Acabe El Mundo" and "Siempre Yo."

The European Swing: All you need to know

The European Swing marks the fourth of five Global Swings on the 2024 Race to Dubai as the DP World Tour arrives in Europe for the first time this season. Here is everything you need to know.

Running from the Soudal Open to the BMW International Open, the Swing features six counting events in five countries with 3,000 Race to Dubai Ranking points on offer at each and a host of strong incentives for the ultimate Swing Champion.

Starting off in Belgium, the DP World Tour returns to Rinkven International for a fifth time for the Soudal Open, before heading to Green Eagle Golf Courses - the longest test on Tour - for the European Open in the first of two German events in this Swing.

The Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed will then bring some of the top male and female golfers together as the Tour returns to Vasatorps Golfkklub in Sweden for the first time this century, before the best in the game assemble for the U.S. Open (which is non-counting for Swing Rankings) at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Following the penultimate men’s Major Championship of the season, the DP World Tour makes its way to The Netherlands for the KLM Open at The International, before moving down to the Adriatic Golf Club in Italy for the Italian Open.

The final event, which will see a Swing Champion crowned, will see the Tour then return to Germany and Golfclub Munchen Eichenreid for the BMW International Open.

The 2024 season on the DP World Tour features a minimum of 44 tournaments in 24 countries and across five continents, underlining its status as golf’s global Tour.

The 2024 Race to Dubai includes three new and distinct phases – five innovative ‘Global Swings’ from November 2023 to August 2024; an historic ‘Back 9’ from September 2024 to October 2024; and two ‘DP World Tour Play-Offs’ in November 2024.

Each Swing will have its own identity and its own Champion who will each earn $200,000.

Swing Champions will also qualify for each of the ‘Back 9’ events, while they will also earn an exemption into the next Rolex Series event. In the case of the European Swing, this means a final chance to gain exemption into the Genesis Scottish Open.

While points accrued in the Major Championships (in the case of the European Swing this means the U.S. Open) will count on the Race to Dubai Rankings, they will not count in the Swing Rankings.

The Schedule

Who won the first three swings of the 2024 dp world tour season.

Min Woo Lee carried over an encouraging end-of-season form from 2023 into the 2024 DP World Tour season as he won the Opening Swing after starring on home soil. Victory at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship - the first event of the season - propelled Lee up the rankings, and a third-place finish two weeks later at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open all but secured his place as the first Swing Champion.

Like Lee, Rory McIlroy's performance in the first two events of 2024 set the tone and made him the man to catch at the top of the International Swing Rankings. A runner-up finish to Tommy Fleetwood at the Dubai Invitational followed a historic fourth Rolex win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for the Northern Irishman, and the importance of that Rolex Series victory proved enough for him to lead the way and ultimately take home the spoils.

The Asian Swing saw three first-time winners on the DP World Tour emerge in European Challenge Tour graduate Jesper Svensson, former World Number One amateur Keita Nakajima and his fellow Japanese Yuto Katsuragawa - but it was Sebastian Söderberg who topped the Asian Swing Rankings after a consistent campaign. The Swede, who opened the Asian Swing with a tie for 21st at the Porsche Singapore Open, recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Hero Indian Open and ISPS HANDA Championship before ending the Swing with a third place at the Volvo China Open to claim his place as Swing Champion.

BWF Malaysia Masters 2024: Lee Zii Jia survives epic to reach semis

Lee Zii Jia came through an epic quarter-final with world number four Anders Antonsen at the Malaysia Masters 2024.

Lee won in three sets to continue his winning run on badminton 's BWF World Tour on Friday (24 May) at his home event, live on Olympic Channel.

The Malaysian, who was crowned Thailand Open men's singles champion last week, won the first game 21-15 in Kuala Lumpur.

Denmark's Antonsen fought back in the second, taking it 21-19.

Both men were diving around the court at times in the third, which went to world number 10 Lee 21-11 to secure his win, in 1 hour and 23 minutes.

Lee will face Ng Ka Long Angus in the final four.

The Malaysia Masters is available to watch live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics mobile app, subject to territorial restrictions applying.

Top seed and men's world number one Viktor Axelsen also made it through his last eight match on Friday. The Olympic champion beat Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien-chen 21-15, 21-11 . He'll face Lu Guang Zu in the semis.

Meanwhile, in the women's singles, PV Sindhu beat the number one seed Han Yue of China to book her spot in the last four.

Loura started slow as the 10-time Bulgarian national champion took an upper hand in the opening round.

But the 21-year-old Indian quickly switched gears and went on the offensive in the second round and earned the bragging rights for the round with four of the five judges voting in favour of him.

The Indian continued the flurry of punches in the third and final round to finally clinch the bout 3-0 and ensure two wins out of two for the Indian contingent in the Thai capital.

On Friday, Sachin Siwach opened India's account with a win in the 57kg category against Alex Mukuka of New Zealand.

India have fielded seven men and three women in the second world qualifiers and Abhinash Jamwal (63.5kg) and Nishant Dev (71kg) will take the ring on Sunday for the first time.

Jamwal faces Andriejus Lavrenovas of Lithuania in his opening bout while Nishant takes on Amando Bighafa of Guinea-Bissau.

Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti (54kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) have already secured their spots for Paris through their performances at the Asian Games.
