University of Évora

Visita o colégio do espírito santo, o edifício principal e mais monumental da universidade de évora, no alentejo, portugal..

Opened in 1559, the Colegio do Espírito Santo School is the main building of the Universidade de Évora (University of Évora) . It transformed the city into an intellectual and religious Jesuit-in-style centre.

It is located outside the city walls, in the north.

Inside it is recommended to see its Italian-Renaissance-in-style monumental cloister with two colonnade floors, the Mannerist Temple of Espírito Santo, and its classrooms adorned with wonderful Baroque-in-Style panels of tiles.

Universidade de Evora

Just outside the historic city walls of Evora in the north east of town is the University of Evora (Colégio del Espiritú Santo).

The church of Espiritú Santo is a former Jesuit church dating from the 16th century and the Italian Renaissance style university buildings, courtyard and classrooms date from the 18th century.

The ornate classrooms still have a fireplace, Brazilwood ceilings and blue and white azulejos tiling.

The University of Evora is Portugal's second oldest university and was a Jesuit college - the Colégio del Espiritú Santo - from 1559 to 1759, until the Jesuits were expelled by the Marquis of Pombal .

The modern-day university is now state-run and reopened as a university in 1979.

There are other campuses of the university in Evora including the Palácio do Vimioso near the Cathedral. There are over 7,000 students and 500 staff.

Evora, Portugal: A Travel Guide to the Historical Treasure

Welcome to the stunning medieval city of Evora, Portugal! The UNESCO site, and hidden treasure, sits at the heart of the rural Alentejo region. Travel through countryside full of olive groves, wide-open plains, and traditional stone villages, before reaching the city walls. From here, prepare to be blown away by history that goes back as far as the Romans! Here are all the must-sees while in Evora.

Things to do in Evora

1. the roman temple (diana’s temple).

Evora was founded by the Romans but is thought to be even older! Because of this, there are many ancient buildings to see within the old city walls. (Also read: Best places to visit in Portugal ).

One of the most famous is the Roman temple ruins, also known as Diana’s Temple. The 14 columns that remain stand at the highest point in the city. For preservation reasons, you can’t enter the temple.

2. Cathedral of Evora

Just across from the temple is the Cathedral of Evora. The Gothic cathedral looks more like a castle, with its turrets and towers. Most impressive for visitors is the breathtaking interior, home to beautiful art, cloisters, and orange trees.

One of the best surprises is the spiral staircase that leads up to the cathedral roof terrace. Climb the stairs for beautiful views over Evora! 

Entrance Fee: Tickets for the cathedral are 1.50 EUR. For additional access to the cloisters and roof terrace, it’s 3.50 EUR.

3. The University of Evora

This is a really unique place to visit in Evora, especially as it is the second oldest university in Portugal. Wander among the amazing archways and courtyards, and admire the colorful Azulejos tiles that decorate the classrooms. An absolute must-see is the university library; its ceiling looks like a work of art!

Tip : The university is open to the public, despite students continuing to study here. Because of this, be respectful of students who are working. Better still, choose lunchtime to visit as the rooms will be quieter.

4. Wander the Pretty Streets

Evora is so beautiful that it would be easy to spend several days here wandering its streets and soaking up the atmosphere. The slow pace of life, and the endless sunshine and flowers, make it feel like summer every day. 

Start at the main square ( Praca do Giraldo ), where you’ll find the fountain. It has 8 spouts that represent each of the streets that lead away from the square. Wander up one of the streets and discover white houses with yellow painted trim, terracotta roofs, pink flowers, and Azulejo tiles.

5. The Chapel of Bones (Church of St Francis)

The Church of St Francis is famous for the Capela dos Ossos (The Chapel of Bones). The ossuary displays the bones of over 5,000 bodies discovered in the graveyards of the city. It was created by Franciscan monks who wanted to show people that we all meet the same fate, regardless of status. Don’t forget to look out for the inscription carved above the entrance that reads ‘we bones that are here, await yours’.

Entrance Fee: Entrance to the church is free. To visit The Chapel of Bones it’s 2 EUR

Tip: Interested to discover more history in Evora? Next to the church are some beautiful public gardens, where you can find the ruins of the old palace.

6. Aqueduct of Silver Water 

This huge aqueduct has become a symbol of Evora. The 18km of water channel that leads into the city was designed by Francisco de Arruda (designer of the Tower of Belem in Lisbon ). Although it was finished in 1530, it was built on top of an existing Roman aqueduct, so you’re looking at thousands of years of history!

What’s really unique is that as the aqueduct gets closer to the city, houses are built to fit perfectly within the arches. The people of Evora were incredibly inventive, using all the space they had available.

Tip: If you want to hike through the countryside, there is an 8km long footpath that runs alongside the aqueduct.

7. Take a Day Trip to Elvas

Elvas is another incredible town that is just one hour’s drive from Evora. See its huge city walls, as well as forts, moats, ruins, and another beautiful aqueduct. One of the best things to see is the unique star-shaped fort that sits on the hill nearby; the perfect place to get some aerial photos and watch the sun go down.

How to visit Evora

Most people visit Evora on a day trip from Lisbon (a 1.5-hour train). However, we’d definitely recommend visiting for a couple of days to enjoy all the things the beautiful city has to offer.

If you do want to visit Evora for the day, consider an organized tour from Lisbon. This is really good value to see all the sights and learn some history. Sometimes they also include other experiences, for example, a wine tour.

Getting Around

Evora is tiny, and the best way to enjoy the city is by walking. If you have a car, this is the easiest way to visit the aqueduct and other places like Elvas. It’s also handy to see the surrounding countryside of Alentejo.

1. Roman Temple of Diana

Évora’s most iconic landmark is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the Iberian Peninsula . Built 2000 years ago, it was traditionally believed to have been dedicated to Diana, the goddess of hunting, but scholars now say it was actually dedicated to emperor Augustus. Although it has lost its roof, the reflecting pool that surrounded it, and four of its 18 columns, it’s easy to imagine what it looked like intact.

2. Chapel of Bones

There’s a reason why this is one of Évora’s most visited attractions. It’s a fascinating and impressive display of human bones and skulls, creating decorative patterns on walls and columns. It’s the city’s most memorable sight , and is part of a royal church from 1480, which should be visited even if the chapel of bones is just too morbid for you. The church is next door to the chapel, and is one of Portugal’s finest constructions in the Gothic and Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) styles. It includes a museum with sacred art and paintings that were originally in convents.

3. Évora Cathedral

Portugal’s largest medieval cathedral looks like a fortress, combining different architectural styles. It was where the flags of Vasco da Gama’s ships were blessed before he departed for India in 1497, when this was still a Romanesque and Gothic building. It already had the impressive marble portal carved with images of the twelve apostles, but the Baroque chancel was added later. It houses one of Europe’s oldest Renaissance organs and has a small museum of sacred art, but the highlight is the view from the terrace, reached via one of the bell towers.

4. Igreja dos Lóios

It’s Évora’s most beautiful church and also one of Portugal’s . It was built as the private temple of a count and his family in 1485, and was also once part of a convent and of a 14th-century palace. That convent is now a hotel , and the palace is still inhabited by an aristocratic family, but the church is open to visitors. Although it’s accessed through a Gothic portal, its interior is Baroque, with walls covered with tile panels, created in 1711 by one of the masters of tile painting.

5. Giraldo Square

Évora’s main square is the heart of the city and the perfect place to start a walk through the World Heritage center. It’s home to the tourist office and outdoor cafés that make it a lively place at any time of the day. It’s surrounded by arcaded buildings and faced by a Renaissance church that served as a model for others in the region. From here you can walk down the city’s main shopping street or up the street that leads to the Roman temple and the cathedral.

6. Évora Museum

Officially named Frei Manuel do Cenáculo National Museum, everyone knows it by its older and much more memorable name, Évora Museum. It’s the former archbishops' palace, now home to a collection of Roman sculptures, Visigothic and medieval artifacts, and Portuguese and Flemish paintings .

7. Dom Manuel Palace

Perfectly located for a relaxing break after visiting the Chapel of Bones, the Public Garden is Évora’s most delightful green space. It’s home to what is left of the former royal palace , the 16th-century “Queen’s Gallery” of Dom Manuel Palace, mixing Renaissance, Gothic, and Manueline architecture. It has been restored to house a museum dedicated to the history of Évora.

8. Igreja da Misericórdia

This small church with a plain façade hides a beautiful interior from the early 1700s, created by some of the greatest baroque masters in Portugal . It has a gold-covered altarpiece, and its walls are lined with tile panels representing the seven spiritual works of mercy, while the paintings illustrate the seven corporal works of mercy.

9. Évora University

Founded in 1559 and expanded in the mid-1700s, this was built as a Jesuit college. It preserves most of the original architecture, like an elegant Renaissance cloister and baroque tile panels in the classrooms. It’s open to visitors, even during classes.

10. Almendres Cromlech

The Évora region is surrounded by several prehistoric monuments, and this one is the most remarkable. It’s known as the “ Portuguese Stonehenge ,” with nearly 100 oval boulders creating a circle, used for sacred rituals and astronomical observation. Predating the famous English monument by 2000 years, it’s one of Europe’s largest and one of humankind’s oldest prehistoric sites . There's a Visitors' Center nearby, which explains the history and culture behind it, but if you can’t make it there, pass by Centro Interpretativo do Megalitismo, an exhibition space in a former convent in central Évora, which provides information about it and other megalithic sites in the region.

The Roman Temple of Évora , also referred to as the Temple of Diana (“Templo de Diana”) is an ancient temple which makes a stunning impression in the historical centre of the city. It is included in the classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and no visit to Évora is complete without taking in this majestic remnant of ancient history.

Cathedral of Évora

The Cathedral of Évora is one of the oldest and most important local monuments, perched on the highest spot of the city. It offers a breathtaking view over the historical city centre and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Évora.

Although located a bit outside of the historical city, these megaliths (website is in Portuguese) are not to be missed if you visit Évora! The concentration of megaliths around the city have given the region the title of the ‘Iberian Mesopotamia’. The area contains a diverse selection of megaliths and boasts cave-art (“arte rupeste”), dating back to the Palaeolithic period in the Cave of Escoural (“Gruta do Escoural”).

Chapel of Bones

One of the more unique sights to take in while you visit Évora, this one might leave you with chills. It is a small, interior chapel located next to the entrance of the Church of Saint Francis. The Chapel of Bones  (website is in Portuguese) gets its name because the interior walls are covered and decorated with human skulls and bones.

When to visit Évora

If you’re planning to visit Évora, be warned that they have incredibly hot summers, making sightseeing unpleasant for some. It is usually best to visit Évora during the warm spring or autumn months.

Although the winters are typically quite mild, there is the chance of grey or wet days, so early spring is considered the best time to visit Evora. At this time, you will get to enjoy the rolling plains of Alentejo which are lush and full of flowers and the days are sunny, but not too hot.

Suggested itinerary

Although you can visit Évora as a day trip from Lisbon, it will involve a lot of travelling, especially if you are reliant on public transport. All of the major tourist sights can be seen within a day but a couple of days will you allow you to take a much more relaxed and pleasant approach.

Ideally, Évora could be explored at a leisurely pace over two days, while a third day could be devoted to visiting the pre-historic standing stones of Cromeleque dos Almendres (website is in Portuguese) and the castle at Evoramonte (website is in Portuguese).

I recently moved to Las Vegas from the Midwest and was so nervous! But since finding Evora I've felt so at home! Jessica in the leasing office from day 1 has been a friendly and helpful face! Her and the other team members are always on top of it and welcome your questions and needs with a smiling face! I couldn't imagine finding a better home here in Las Vegas!

I recently visited Evora Apartments with high hopes of signing a lease. The apartment complex itself seemed promising, but unfortunately, my experience with the front desk left much to be desired. The staff appeared rude and uninterested. The website offered more information than the front desk staff. Her lack of professionalism was disappointing, especially considering our initial excitement, and the fact that this is marketed as a luxury apartment. I rarely leave negative review, but please invest in better training for your front desk team to ensure a more welcoming and efficient experience for potential residents!

If you are interested,Go for it! I came and saw the apartments and decided on it a week later .The management from each department are also truly mazing (Love you Candace !) everyone is really friendly and resourceful. If you want the clean modern aesthetic, then you will definitely enjoy living here. The best part about it ,is everything is ultra white so it looks really big. The windows in the living room allow for lots of natural lighting and saving on energy. It also brings a lot of the outside in . As far as the finishing goes, there is a contrast between the black and the white that really makes everything pop. A lot of apartments fall short when it comes to the kitchen in my opinion, but I have to say the kitchen here looks very sleek,is very functional,with lots of cabinets and modern appliances. I don't even like cooking, but I spend a lot of time in my kitchen . I have to say it's a 10 out of 10.

Finally!!! A tastefully crafted luxury apartment on the West side. I've been looking for something like this since I moved from CA three years ago. Nothing ever satisfied me, until now. Evora is the answer to what I feel has been missing from the Vegas rental market for years- a true work/ live/ play blissful Las Vegas living experience that is not a high rise on the strip. My partner and I had a wonderful experience with Evora leasing staff, we worked with Kayla and Jessica who have been communicative and friendly since we met. I highly recommend to prospective tenants looking for an authentic, classic luxury living experience.

I hardly ever leave reviews, but I am so happy with my decision to live at Evora. The leasing office is very accessible and willing to help with anything. It's well maintained, and maintenance responds quickly. It's gated. They use smart locks to secure your unit and entries around the property. The floor plan I chose was the Corsica one bedroom loft. I love the modern finishes with quartz countertops, 19-foot ceilings, spiral staircase, LED mirror, and upgraded appliances. I have a HUGE private rooftop deck. My favorite part about living at Evora is the clubhouse and fitness center. There is a sauna and steam room attached to the fitness locker rooms! Plus, every exercise machine you can think of. The clubhouse has a panoramic deck with a beautiful view of the strip and the mountains. There is also pickle ball courts and a super cute dog park for your fur baby. Evora hasn't given me a reason to give them anything less than 5 stars.

Modern kitchen. I love the finishes especially the quartz countertops and large undermount single bowl kitchen sink!

Didn't even do a tour yet and was already given a bad impression with front desk hoping to update this later to a better review but I've lived at most of Las Vegas luxury apartments and you either have nice apartments and not so nice staff.. I understand people have bad days but they seemed very uninterested and it's a bit upsetting for such an upscale place. I was really excited to check the place out it looks so amazing already! We will be back in for a tour and looking forward to a better experience this time

if I could give a negative star I would, first it took multi times even seeing a apartment, then ask me to go outta my way to get papers and crap all to be denied for 1 neg item on my credit report for 2k capital one, nothing else neg, all bills paid and on time,i make way more then 10K a month so I can easily afford this average place yet they denied me and lied 2-3 times about it,i glad I was denied though didn't know that place was gonna have over 1200 apartments or something,i see the other neg reviews & there not lying, they barley answer the phone or email back, this place gets a - from me and don't even reply evora,this is only the beginning, wait till I start talking about you guys to my 150k instagram follower and on my TikTok
