Best caravan manufacturers: the ultimate guide to the different makes of caravan

We take a look at the best caravan brands, featuring names such as Coachman, Bailey, Adria, Swift and more

By Peter Byrne Published: December 11, 2023

Best caravan manufacturers

If you’re looking to buy a tourer, it’s worth doing your research and finding out what the different makes of caravan offer. If you find the sheer number of names out there bewildering, help is at hand, as we’ve rounded up the best caravan manufacturers out there.

We’ve been able to create this list of caravan brands by using the results of our Owner Satisfaction Awards. These are unique within the industry, as they’re voted for by the readers of Practical Caravan and members of The Camping and Caravanning Club, giving us an insight into how caravanners have got on when buying their tourers. They present us with an accurate picture of the market and identify the makes that are offering a standout customer satisfaction and buying experience.

Our most recent results come from the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024, with the results announced on December 7th 2023. This year, we received 4,660 completed surveys, offering a comprehensive view of the industry and allowing us to pick out the leading caravan manufacturers.

We also used the Practical Caravan Awards to create this list. Here, our expert judging panel uses our combined decades of experience within the industry to select the standout tourers across a wide range of categories. In the process, we judge the latest releases on the market to pick out the best caravans , taking into account factors such as the practicalities of the layout and the value for money provided.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about the best caravan brands out there – whether you’re looking for a classic Swift caravan, an American Airstream or a smart Bailey caravan we’ve got you covered.

What is the best caravan make?

Coachman was named the best overall manufacturer at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024, an accolade it has now won for two years in a row.

The most recent results saw the Hull-based brand achieve a total score of 81.4% (based on 4,660 completed surveys from caravanners) to secure the title, following Coachman’s impressive performance on both the new and used tourer scene. 84.2% secured a gold award in Best Manufacturer: Pre-owned Caravans, while a silver award was received in the Best Manufacturer: New Caravans category thanks to a score of 79.8%.

Address: Drury Drive, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 1WH 01787 888980  www.adria.co.uk

The UK is Adria’s key market for the caravans it produces. The Slovenian company must be doing something right because it has a larger footprint in this country than any other continental manufacturer.

The caravan brand shows off its credentials with its performance in the Practical Caravan Awards over the past three years. It’s won the best four berth caravan category twice – in 2022, through the Adria Adora Tiber , while the updated Adria Altea Dart took the crown at the 2023 Awards.

Adria Altea Dart

For the 2024 season, Adria released the new Action 391PT, a model with a double bed that can be made up in the lounge and a drop-down double bed above. This, in turn, was shortlisted twice at the Practical Caravan Awards 2024 too.

Taking the brand’s showing at our Awards into account, Adria’s display at the 2024 Owner Satisfaction Awards doesn’t come as a surprise. It won the Best Manufacturer: New Caravans category with an impressive score of 83.1%, as well as coming third in the Best Manufacturer: Used Caravans category, with a score of 81.6%.

As this guide shows, there are a variety of caravan manufacturers out there, so the Slovenian brand deserves recognition for winning two gold awards at last year’s Owner Satisfaction Awards too. This was thanks to an impressive score of 86.1%, which was enough to top the Best Pre-Owned Caravan Manufacturer category, as well as a third-place finish in the Best New Caravan Manufacturer category, with a total of 83%.

Address: Lowdham Road, Gunthorpe, Nottingham NG14 7GS 0115 966 3838  www.lowdhams.com

These famous American caravans with their distinctive silver exteriors have been through quite a few changes in distribution in the UK in recent years, after Adventure Leisure Vehicles stopped importing them. They are now exclusively sold through Lowdhams.

Address: South Liberty Lane, Bristol BS3 2SS 0117 966 5967  www.baileyofbristol.co.uk

Bailey is one of Britain’s biggest caravan manufacturers, with its Unicorn range in particular proving very popular. In recent years, the brand has been improving its models with even larger front windows, as well as adding more 8ft-wide caravans .

Currently offering five ranges, Bailey prides itself on its innovation, with an example being the 2009 introduction of its Alu-Tech construction system, where strong and rigid aluminium frames are used to create robust tourers.

Bailey has celebrated its 75th anniversary by launching two ranges. This includes the new six-model Phoenix GT75 range – five of the tourers stick to the same caravan layouts seen in the Phoenix+, with the new addition being the six-berth Bailey Phoenix GT75 762 .

This range proved popular with our judges at the Practical Caravan Awards 2024 – the GT75 762 picked up our best family caravan category, while the GT75 420 was selected as the standout 2 berth caravan . The new season has also seen Bailey replace the radio in its models with a SONOS Bluetooth speaker.

Bailey Phoenix GT75 762

The Pegasus Grande GT75 range was released to mark the 75th anniversary too – this is an updated version of the Pegasus Grande.

The manufacturer’s success in our Awards has been a recurring theme in recent years – Bailey was shortlisted for 11 categories at the Practical Caravan Awards 2022, as well as winning one through the Bailey Pegasus Grande SE Ancona . The Bailey Alicanto Grande Evora had a dominating display at the Practical Caravan Awards 2023 too, winning a category and being shortlisted for a further three.

Bailey Alicanto Grande Evora

It’s subsequently not surprising that the caravan make has done well at the Owner Satisfaction Awards. This year, Bailey won a gold award for the Best Manufacturer: Pre-owned Caravans category, with a score of 80%. A silver award was also received in the Best Manufacturer: New Caravans category, thanks to a total of 72.4%.

The Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023 proved successful too, with a gold award received thanks to a score of 81.1% in the best pre-owned caravan manufacturer category, as well as a silver award in the best new caravan manufacturer category, thanks to a total of 75.1%. There was also a silver medal in the best overall manufacturer (new and pre-owned) category, where Bailey achieved 78.1%.

Address:  Delves Lane, Consett, County Durham 0371 964 2113 buccaneer-rv.co.uk

Originally founded in 1969, Buccaneer is a brand that has become synonymous with luxury. After being purchased by Elddis in 1998, it moved to the Consett, County Durham plant, before subsequently becoming a member of the Erwin Hymer Group in 2017. Caravans are currently produced across five ranges, the Aruba, the Barracuda, the Bermuda, the Commodore and the Cruiser – all are 8ft-wide.

The Bermuda was a winner at the Practical Caravan Awards 2022, where we were impressed by how its high level of kit made it seem like excellent value for money, despite its price tag – an indication of why this is one of the most luxurious caravan brands.

Camperlands

Address:  Leestone Rd, Sharston Industrial Area, Wythenshawe, Manchester M22 4RN www.camperlands.co.uk

It was only recently that Camperlands entered the world of caravan manufacturing – it was previously a name more associated with camping accessories and awnings. However, it has now added tiny tourers to its repertoire. Its first foreway was the Campmaster, subsequently renamed the Lightweight following the addition of the King.

Campmaster Duo

Now, the brand has added the Campmaster Duo too, a budget tourer but one with decent storage and road clearance that made our shortlist three times at the Practical Caravan Awards 2024.

Address: Amsterdam Road, Sutton Fields Industrial Estate, Hull HU7 0XF  www.coachman.co.uk

After launching in 1986 with four layouts, Coachman was the only UK caravan manufacturer to focus solely on tourers until 2022, when the brand moved into the motorhome sphere following a takeover from Swedish motorhome brand Kabe. It is the only UK brand to include Alde wet heating systems in all of its models.

In 2023, Coachman slimmed its five ranges down to 20 models, with the Acadia line-up particularly reduced. This has continued into the 2024 season – while the Lusso and Acadia ranges are staying as they did in 2023, the VIP range has been reduced from six to five models, as the 540 has been dropped.

The Laser range is also now reduced from four to three models – replacing the 620 is the Coachman Laser Xtra 665 , a van that picked up the best caravan for couples category at the recent Practical Caravan Awards 2024. Another new layout, the Coachman Laser Xcel 850 , also saw the brand awarded the best luxury caravan category.

Coachman Laser Xtra 665

Coachman’s credentials are further enhanced by winning two categories at each of the 2022 and 2023 Practical Caravan Awards, with winners including the VIP 540 Xtra in 2022 and the Coachman Laser Xcel 855 in 2023.

Coachman Laser Xcel 855

The brand’s prestige can be seen by Coachman claiming the title of best overall manufacturer at the Owner Satisfaction Awards for two years in a row now, most recently at the 2024 Awards, where it scored 81.4%, the only make to achieve a gold award in the category this year.

Coachman also secured a gold award in the Best Manufacturer: New Caravans category thanks to a score of 84.2%, as well as a silver award in the Best Manufacturer: Pre-Owned Caravans category where the brand achieved 79.8%.

This follows on from last year’s success, where Coachman won the best overall manufacturer (new and pre-owned), thanks to an excellent total score of 83.1%. Coachman also achieved a gold medal in the best new caravan manufacturer category, with 82.4%, and the best pre-owned caravan manufacturer, with 84.7%.

Address: Delves Lane, Consett, County Durham 0371 964 2113, www.elddis.co.uk

Dating back to 1964, Elddis is another caravan brand that, like Buccaneer and Xplore, comes under the Erwin Hymer Group UK umbrella, following its takeover in 2017.

The manufacturer, which will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2024, produces three ranges, the Affinity, Avante, and the Crusader – the former, which launched in 2013, has proved to be a particular favourite among caravanners, as seen by Elddis Affinity 550 , which for the new season, has remained fairly unchanged. Models are made in County Durham.

Elddis Affinity 550

The brand regularly features in the Practical Caravan Awards, appearing on the shortlist seven times in the 2022 event and once in the 2023 Awards.

Another name that is associated with Erwin Hymer UK is Compass – however, the budget brand was dropped for the 2024 season. Instead, the majority of dealers who previously sold Compass models now have Xplore tourers on their forecourts, with others having Elddis models instead.

The caravan make achieved two silver awards at the Owner Satisfaction Awards in both 2023 and 2024. At the 2023 Awards, this was courtesy of scores of 74.7% and 77.8% in the Best New Caravan Manufacturer and Best Pre-owned Caravan Manufacturer categories respectively, while 2024 saw 77.8% and 76.7% for the Best Manufacturer: New Caravans and Best Manufacturer: Pre-owned Caravans categories respectively.

At the 2023 Owner Satisfaction Awards, Elddis was also one of only four brands to achieve the necessary sample size required to be eligible to appear on our Best Overall Manufacturer (New and Pre-Owned) list, where a total score of 76.1% was achieved. The standard for this can be seen by only one make, Coachman, managing to achieve this in 2024.

Address: Holzstrasse 19, D-88339 Bad Waldsee, Germany  www.eriba.com/en

Famous for its miniature caravans with pop-up roofs, Eriba, which is Hymer’s caravan brand, produces very luxurious (and heavy) conventional tourers, such as the Eriba Touring 820 , a model we shortlisted at the Practical Caravan Awards 2023.

Eriba Touring 820

For the 2024 season, Eriba has introduced two new layouts, the Touring 642 and the Touring 630, which come with fixed single beds and a rear transverse bed respectively. Also new for the season is the introduction of three new special edition models, coming in “Nugget Gold”, “Tango Red” and “Harbour Blue”.

The brand is well-regarded, as seen by the score of 85.6% that Eriba achieved as it took the top spot in the Best Manufacturer: Pre-owned Caravans category at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024. Another gold award was won at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023 last year, this time with a score of 85.3% in the best new caravan manufacturer category.

Address: Main Road, Little Haywood, Stafford. Staffordshire ST18 0TR 01889 883088 www.freedomcaravans.com

A niche operation, Freedom has been selling ultra-lightweight and budget Polish-built caravans in the UK since 1984. One of its best-selling models since then has been the Freedom Jetstream Twin Sport, a tiny tourer that we shortlisted three times at the Practical Caravan Awards 2022.

Freedom Jetstream Twin Sport

A tourer from another of the brand’s ranges, the Freedom Carpento 410 , was shortlisted twice at the Practical Caravan Awards 2023 too, thanks to its retro style and lightweight build.

Address:  Red Lion Caravans Ltd., Southport, Lancashire PR8 5LF, 01704 889973 www.go-pods.co.uk

Go-Pod is a manufacturer known for its micro tourers, coming with a one-piece monocoque design that helps prevent water ingress from taking hold – they are also so lightweight that many people can move them by hand too. The brand has been a regular on our shortlists for the Practical Caravan Awards in recent years, appearing five times since the Practical Caravan Awards 2022.

Address: Bradshaw Ln, Greenhalgh, Preston PR4 3HQ, 01772 737273  www.hobby-caravans.co.uk

German company Hobby specialises in innovative and eye-catching tourers. These include the Scandinavian-inspired Maxia, the more conventional Excellent, and the Beachy range, the latter of which is a cross between a caravan and a campervan.

Hobby Beachy

Despite launching a couple of years ago on the Continent, the range initially failed to pass UK fire standards, but the issue has now been resolved following the addition of fire-retardant upholstery. The caravan brand debuted two Beachy caravans at the recent October NEC Show, including the Hobby Beachy 360 .

Address: Helmut-Knaus-Strasse 1, D-94118, Jandelsbrunn, Geremany 00 49 08583 211  www.knaus.com/en-uk

German brand Knaus has been gaining some publicity with highly innovative caravans like the Sport & Fun and the Travelino. Then there’s the ‘self healing’ Azur 500EU – if it gets scratched by a passing tree, it should repair itself as long as it’s left out in the sun, with grinding and polishing for more serious scratches. As a result, it’s not surprising that Knaus has seen its vans win our best caravan for innovation award for two years in a row now.

The 2024 season has seen the brand launch its Yaseo caravan, an all-electric space-saving model which can be towed by lighter vehicles thanks to its reduced size. This has seen the incorporation of the FoldXpand seen in the maker’s motorhomes to give the Yaseo 500 DK a larger front without increasing its length.

Knaus had a very successful display at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023 too – at last year’s event, the brand took the top spot in the best new caravan manufacturer category, thanks to a score of 89.6%.

La Mancelle

Address: La Mancelle Caravans, 45 Boulevard Pierre Lefaucheux, 72025 Le Mans, Marquis Leisure

La Mancelle was launched in 1960 in the city of Le Mans by André Devaux and was bought out by Trigano Group in 2000. Now, with 63 years behind it, the manufacturer prides itself on solid, refined and beautifully built tourers, all fitted with quality materials.

The brand only arrived in the UK this year, at Trigano-owned Marquis Leisure, with the dealer initially importing four single-axles – two from the Liberty range and two from the mid-level Fantaisy range.

La Mancelle Liberty 490 SA

The make proved popular with our expert judging panel, winning a category in its debut appearance at the Practical Caravan Awards, taking home the title of best small caravan for the 2024 season thanks to the La Mancelle Fantaisy 360 CL, as well as having two other models shortlisted.

Address:  N/A

This caravan manufacturer ceased to operate in 2019, but following 50 years of trading, it has built up a loyal fanbase. It produced around 3,000 tourers a year, and its popularity continues nowadays on the pre-owned tourer scene, as seen by the Gold Award it won for the Best Manufacturer: Pre-owned Caravans category at last year’s Owner Satisfaction Awards with a score of 80.2% achieved.

The feat was repeated this year too, where another Gold Award was achieved in the same category, following a score of 80.4%.

Address: www.minkcampers.co.uk

The brand that originates in Iceland and makes its vans in Latvia specialises in teardrops that are certain to turn heads on the road.

Mink-E

There are currently three ranges – the Mink S, the brand’s first tourer, the Mink X (the new name for the Mink Highlander ), and at the recent NEC Show, it launched the all-electric Mink-E , an innovative van with an MTPLM of 550kg that has been designed specifically for electric vehicles.

Address:  Dunswell Road, Cottingham, East Yorkshire HU16 4JX 01482 875740  www.swiftgroup.co.uk

Over the years, the mighty Swift Group has acquired a range of other brands, including Eccles and Sprite which remains a highly popular budget make within the extensive Swift stable. The brand makes caravans, motorhomes, campervans and holiday homes and has founder Ken Smith’s son, Peter, as chairman.

The manufacturer ran a TV ad campaign in 2023, the first time since the early 1970s that someone in the sector has invested in one.

Swift produces eight ranges in total, including the Sprite, Sprite Compact, Sprite Grande, Challenger Grande SE and Elegance Grande.

Another range is the Swift Challenger Exclusive 580 , which won the title of best four-berth caravan at the Practical Caravan Awards 2024, in the process breaking Adria’s two year winning streak in the category. The brand won another category and also had tourers shortlisted in a further four categories.

Swift Challenger Exclusive 580

Look out too for the Basecamp. This is aimed at active outdoor types and includes the Swift Basecamp 3 and, briefly, the Basecamp 6 .

The caravan manufacturer also launched the prototype Basecamp Evo at the recent October NEC Show – the prototype concept model is based on the Basecamp 2 and includes a rain-to-flush toilet, 920W of solar panel and uses 1,750 recycled plastic bottles to insulate it.

Swift Basecamp Evo

Another range is the Challenger SE, with the Swift Challenger 480 SE winning a category at the Practical Caravan Awards 2023 – in fact, Swift won three categories last year, as well as being shortlisted eight times. There were three wins at the Practical Caravan Awards 2022 too, as well as a further seven shortlisted appearances.

After such impressive performances at the Practical Caravan Awards, it’s unsurprising that Swift had a strong display at last year’s Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023. This included a silver award in the best new caravan manufacturer category, with a score of 75.7%, and a gold award in the best pre-owned caravan manufacturer category, achieved thanks to its score of 80.9%.

At this year’s Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024, a gold award was again won in the Best Manufacturer: Pre-owned Caravans category with a total of 80.3%, with a silver also awarded thanks to its score of 76.6% in the Best New Caravan Manufacturer category.

Address: www.vagabondcaravans.co.uk

A South African make that was founded in 2009 in Durban, the caravan brand exported vans to countries such as Australia before the Vagabond Rogue arrived in the UK at the start of year, where it featured at the Caravan, Motorhome and Holiday Show in Manchester. It impressed us enough to make the shortlist three times at the Practical Caravan Awards 2024.

Address:  Delves Lane, Consett, County Durham 0371 964 2113 xplore-rv.co.uk

The last of Erwin Hymer UK’s three brands, Xplore is a budget-friendly make of caravan that offers great value for money. This is seen by its achievements at the Practical Caravan Awards in recent years, where it has won two of our budget categories since 2022.

One model which particularly impressed us was the Xplore 304, the winner of the best caravan under £20,000 category at the Practical Caravan Awards 2024.

For the new season, Xplore’s tourers have refreshed exterior graphics and interior upholstery.

Address: Helmut-Knaus-Strasse 1, D-94118, Jandelsbrunn, Geremany 00 49 08583 211  www.weinsberg.com

Weinsberg is Knaus’s budget brand, providing a stronger focus on family layouts and family-friendly interiors. It’s proved a successful combination, with Weinsberg winning two categories since the Practical Caravan Awards 2022, including through the Weinsberg CaraOne 400 LK last year. For the 2024 season, Weinsberg has remained unchanged.

Where can I see the best caravan manufacturers?

There are UK shows you can visit where you can see a wide variety of caravans from many of the manufacturers covered here, and all in one place. The two biggest happen at Birmingham’s NEC, with the larger show in October when the season’s new models are launched, and a smaller one earlier in the year, which will be taking place between 13th-18th February in 2024.

A show is also held at Glasgow’s SECC at around the same time for those north of the border – in 2024, it will be held between 1st-4th February. There is also a smaller show at EventCity in Manchester in January, which will be running from 11th-14th.

hybrid 14 melbourne show

JB rolls out new EV and hybrid caravans

New gas-free caravans, composite hybrid off-roaders and traveller-branded touring vans from big melbourne manufacturer.

JB Caravans is starting 2024 with a bang, with the rolling out of a bunch of fresh models including new all-electric variants, a brand-new range of hybrids, and the re-launch of a well-known Aussie RV brand.

JB-built Traveller caravans

Meanwhile, JB is also using the Victorian Supershow as the launching pad for a new range of Traveller entry-level caravans.

The new JB-built Traveller vans are being built in JB's Melbourne factory after the owner of JB Caravans acquired the IP assets of the long-standing caravan builder when the business was wound up in late-2023.

The new Traveller vans are built with a galvanised chass, timber frame and aluminium cladding, and a new 19ft 6in Traveller Intrigue tandem axle couple's caravan on display at the Melbourne Showgrounds features a luxury couple's layout including queen bed, kitchen, cafe dinette and rear bathroom with washing machine and separate shower.

It's the second well-known Aussie RV brand that JB has taken off life support in recent times, after the big-selling Melbourne caravan manufacturer took over the production of Paradise Motorhomes in early-2023.

85 Australian Made Caravans (Manufacturers Directory)

Over the years, the caravanning industry has continuously grown and evolved while always striving to create more comfort, convenience and self-sufficiency within their vans.

With the industrial revolution of the 21st century, where automation and technology are key, we have seen a rise in the number of caravan manufacturers looking to keep costs down and production high by going offshore.

To be fair, the Chinese and imported caravans and hybrids are getting better by the year. Plus, they allow those with entry level budgets to actually have some skin in the game and also be able to enjoy the benefits of caravanning.

However, for many Aussies, investing in 100% Australian made caravans is of the utmost importance. It may be that keeping the money and jobs local is the goal, or maybe it’s the superior quality and attention to detail that you’re looking for.

If going full Aussie is your objective, this compilation of Australian made caravans will serve as a helpful guide while researching your options.

In addition to listing each caravan manufacturer who claims to be making 100% Australian vans, I’ve pulled together all of the information I could find (from their website and elsewhere) to support that declaration. I did also email a few companies if their wording wasn’t clear enough.

Some websites are using clever phrasing to make people think they’re offering an Australian made product at first glance. But, sometimes you need to dig a little deeper or even email the manufacturer directly if you want valid confirmation.

Clever wording that looks like Australian made, but actually isn’t:

  • “Australian owned & operated” – locally owned, but not necessarily built
  • “Built for Australian conditions” – built for Australia, but not necessarily made in Australia
  • “Local factory” – they may just assemble the caravan there using imported flat packs
  • “Designed in Australia” – ‘designed’ doesn’t automatically equal ‘manufactured’
  • “Australian caravan manufacturer” – the company is Australian, but the vans may still be largely built overseas

If I couldn’t find the definite wording to illustrate that the caravan manufacturer 100% constructs their vans within Australia, it did not make the cut for this Australian made caravans list.

Look out for the ‘Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG)’ logo ↓

Australian Made Logo

Your guarantee when buying a caravan displaying the AMAG logo:

  • The company shows commitment to supporting local economy, businesses, suppliers & jobs
  • Reliable warranties due to locally sourced components, which are more easily accessible
  • Products abide by sustainable manufacturing laws
  • Products are constructed and tested in local conditions

10 thoughts on “85 Australian Made Caravans (Manufacturers Directory)”

This is GOLD! Thanks to all involved, we’ll use this to buy our hybrid van in 4 months. Cheers

Awesome! So glad to be of service 🙂

Masterpiece Caravans Campbellfield are also 100% Aussie made. We watched ours made from the chassis up.

Thanks for sharing Kerrie. I can see that they now advertise “100% Australian Made” on their website now, so I’ll add them to the list.

Thanks heaps for this, it was so helpful! I’d much prefer to buy an Aussie made caravan so you’ve saved me having to do all this research myself. 🙂

Re your article Directory of Australian Made Caravans (83 Manufacturers), I am disappointed that you did not bother to fully research this. It is a complex subject and demanded a thorough and exhaustive research – or else best left alone. I own a caravan new in 2021 which was hand built in Melbourne by a manufacturer who does not appear in your “directory”. Thus, by omission, readers will almost certainly assume it is not Australian made.

I can assure you that the amount of research that was put into this article was immense. As stated at the beginning of the post, “if I couldn’t find the definite wording to illustrate that the caravan manufacturer 100% constructs their vans within Australia, it did not make the cut for this Australian made caravans list.” I cannot add any manufacturers who don’t clearly state, or who I know on a personal level are fully made in Australia, as a moral obligation. If you’d like to share the brand of caravan you have I’d be happy to look into it and add them to the list.

How about Essential caravans

I reckon Essential Caravans are all Aussie made. They do allude to that on their website. However without the specific 100% Australian made wording, I can’t add them to the list just in case a portion of the build is somewhat imported.

Who made your van Geoff Bruin?

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

‘Shortcuts Everywhere’: Quality issues have plagued Boeing  even after two fatal crashes. Many employees blame the company’s focus on increasing production speed .

A Major Reshuffle : Boeing said that it was overhauling its leadership  amid its most significant safety crisis in years, announcing sweeping changes that included the departure of its chief executive, Dave Calhoun , at the end of the year.

United’s Planes : An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among several recent incidents that have occurred  on Boeing flights operated by United Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

traveller caravan manufacturer

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
