Beautiful and diverse landscape, scenic road trips, bucket list ski experiences, and a strong craft beer culture are some of the highlights of a trip to Colorado. Start your trip in Denver to experience the capital city’s arts, culture, food, and nightlife, and then head to more remote destinations to immerse yourself in some of the most impressive scenery in the country. Use this guide to plan your perfect trip to the Centennial State.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Summer or winter are the best times to visit. They’re both peak season due to the enjoyable summer weather (it’s hot but never humid) and the draw of ski season in winter. However, fall offers some fun events like the Aspen Film Festival and Denver Great American Beer Festival, showcasing 2,700 beers from around the world. No matter when you visit, you’re likely to have some clear, sunny days, as the state boasts 300 days of sunshine per year.
  • Getting Around: The best way to see the state is by car—it will give you the flexibility to explore, drive along the many scenic routes, and stash and transport your gear if you’re coming for some adventure.
  • Travel Tip: The high altitude can be a problem for some travelers. Denver is at an elevation of 5,280 feet (earning it the nickname of the Mile High City), and you’ll climb even higher as you head into the mountains. Take it easy and stay hydrated to avoid altitude sickness.

Things to Do

Hit the great outdoors. Colorado is home to some pretty stunning landscape that’s enjoyable all year, including several national and state parks; more than 50 hikeable fourteeners (or 14ers, local speak for mountains whose peaks reach 14,000 feet in elevation) ; world-class ski resorts; and more ways to spend your days with Mother Nature. Adventure-seekers won’t be disappointed.

Go for a drive. You can also take in all that beautiful nature by car. Just outside Denver, you can do the Lariat Loop, drive Rocky Mountain National Park Trail Ridge Road, or make your way to the southwest corner of the state to drive the San Juan Scenic Byway.

Grab a beer. Colorado is known for its craft beer scene, and you have hundreds to choose from on your visit . You’ll find them all over the state , with higher concentrations in cities like Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Golden, and Colorado Springs. But no matter where you are, you won’t be far from a good craft brew.

Get high. If that’s your thing, Colorado was one of the first states (along with Washington) to legalize marijuana for recreational use in 2012 , and since then dispensaries have cropped up (pun intended) all over. Just be sure to finish your stash before crossing state lines.

What to Eat and Drink

Colorado is perhaps most known for its craft beer, but pair your pint with a few of the state’s tastiest and most iconic dishes, primarily consisting of local meats. When out for a meal, look for trout, bison burgers, elk, and Rocky Mountain oysters (aka bull testicles). It also lays claim to some of the best breakfast burritos and green chile in the country, and Colorado-style pizza (a thick-crust pie piled with toppings) is definitely a local and visitor favorite, especially at its origin, Beau Jo’s .

Top Destinations

Denver: The Mile High City is the state’s capital and largest city, and it's where you’ll find award-winning restaurants, a strong craft beer scene, arts and culture, and sports stadiums for the professional teams. It’s also a convenient and practical location for day trips to popular Rocky Mountain destinations.

Rocky Mountain National Park: Ranked third in the country (after the Grand Canyon and Great Smoky Mountains), this national park gets about 4.7 million visitors per year to hike, see wildlife, and drive the scenic Trail Ridge Road. Base yourself in the town of Estes Park.

Colorado Springs: Similar to Denver, Colorado Springs is a great jumping off point for some day trips. You can summit the 14,000-foot Pikes Peak by hiking or by car (one of the few you can do by car), and admire gorgeous views from the top (its beauty inspired the song “America the Beautiful”); visit Garden of the Gods , a park filled with towering red rock formations; and walk across the highest suspension bridge in the country at Royal Gorge Bridge and Park , which towers 955 feet over the canyon and Arkansas River below. For even more thrill, ride the country’s highest zipline at 1,200 feet over the gorge.

Ski Resorts: Colorado has some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world, so naturally, its top ski resorts , such as Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen, and Telluride, are popular destinations come winter. Ski season lasts from about November to April depending on snowfall and weather, and each resort offers a different experience and vibe. These mountain towns are also great to visit in the summer for hiking, mountain biking, and festivals.

Mesa Verde National Park: Tucked all the way in the southwestern corner of Colorado, this UNESCO World Heritage site attracts visitors from around the world to see its remarkably well-preserved cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo people. After the park, drive one more hour to the Four Corners, a site that lets you stand in four states—Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona—simultaneously, where their borders meet.

San Juan Mountains: Arguably the most picturesque part of the state, a road trip through this area is highly recommended. The San Juan Skyway is a 230-mile loop through southwestern Colorado that takes you through Durango, Silverton, Telluride, and other towns. The stretch from Ouray and Silverton, known as the Million Dollar Highway, might be the most beautiful road trip you take in your life.

Great Sand Dunes National Park: Experience North America’s tallest sand dunes by hiking around the 30 square miles of dunes (there are no trails), sandboarding or sand sledding, spending the night to do some stargazing (it was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2019), or simply taking in the views of the dunes with the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the backdrop.

Getting There

Unless you’re driving to Colorado from a nearby state, you’re likely going to arrive by flying into Denver International Airport , about 20 minutes outside of downtown Denver. You can take a train to downtown’s Union Station , and then walk or use local public transit to explore. Plan on renting a car if your itinerary includes destinations outside of Denver. If you’re headed straight to the mountain areas like Vail, Aspen, or others, shuttle companies, such as the Epic Mountain Express , offer round-trip rides from the airport to various mountain towns for a fee.

Money Saving Tips

  • Traveling during the off-peak seasons of spring or fall will help to save money on flights and accommodations.
  • If skiing is your reason for visiting, plan on day trips to the slopes instead of overnight stays to save on hotels, pack your own lunches to avoid pricey mountain meals, and look online for lift ticket discounts in advance. Schedule-permitting, ski on weekdays for lower lift ticket prices, as well as fewer crowds and less traffic.
  • If you’re coming to check out Colorado’s amazing outdoor opportunities, consider trading a few hotel stays for nights under the stars instead. If you already own the proper gear, camping can save you a lot of money.

Colorado is synonymous with its primary attraction: the Rocky Mountains, a jaw-dropping geographic wonder of the world whose peaks, crags, and canyons will dominate your view—and your itinerary. Visitors come to Colorado for its world-class ski resorts and assorted outdoor adventures. They come for national parks, dude ranches, road trips, hot springs, and rodeos. They come to Denver for its museums, sports stadiums, pubs, parks, and bookshops. They come to pop a tent, unplug, and walk into the backcountry. And while many of Colorado’s attractions aren’t exactly undiscovered, there’s plenty of room for everybody–and no visitor will leave underwhelmed.

When’s the best time to go to Colorado?

Colorado is a year-round destination, so “when to go” depends entirely on what you want to do. Ski season generally begins in late November, with prices and hotel capacity peaking in late December, mid-February, and spring break in March. Come April and May, aka shoulder or “mud” season, most ski resorts close but canyon country enjoys ideal temps (and an explosion of cactus wildflowers). You may be able to find some good deals during this time, but afterward, the gorgeous mountain summer and fall months take over and people flock to the state for sunny days, cool nights, epic camping trips, and dude ranch getaways.

How to get around Colorado

Most visitors to Colorado fly into Denver International Airport, referred to locally as DIA and by its airport code, DEN. The airport, a modern, circus tent–like affair on the plains northeast of Denver, is famous with conspiracy theorists for its alleged secret tunnels, curses, cryptic artwork, and haunted devil horse statue.

From the airport, check the Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus schedule for the most economical way to get to Denver, Boulder, and the many ski mountains. If you’re going to Boulder, you can also use the Green Ride shuttle service; for all other destinations, look for the individual shuttle counters in the main arrival terminal. In general, although there are Greyhound and other bus connections running across Interstate 70 (I-70), you’ll most likely want to rent a car to get around the state.

Can’t miss things to do in Colorado

— Go on a high-alpine backcountry camping trip in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area, a 120-square-mile chunk of mountains straddling the Continental Divide that includes seven peaks over 13,000 feet.

— Visit any time between late July and early September and head for the hills. Anywhere you go, you’ll be in wildflower heaven.

Food and drink to try in Colorado

— Colorado’s food scene, once defined by steak and more steak, has come a long way in recent years. Locals still love their red meat (this is cowboy country after all) but nowadays they eat their carne asada with quinoa, craft beer, or kombucha.

— Top chefs from around the world are drawn to Colorado for its scenery, bringing their talent and creativity with them. The farm-to-table and locavore movements are as popular here as anywhere in the nation. And in Denver, cannabis-infused cuisine is on the rise: Following the legalization of recreational marijuana, visitors can expect everything from pot-infused beef jerky to mile-high haute cuisine.

— Colorado is nirvana for beer lovers. Visitors can taste their way along the state’s craft beer trail , which runs through Denver and the mountains, or head straight to Denver for the annual Great American Beer Festival each September. Even the governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, brews his own beer (taste some at Wynkoop Brewing Company ).

— More than 100 wineries make up Colorado’s thriving wine industry, concentrated in the western half of the state. There are also a number of craft spirit distilleries to explore.

Culture in Colorado

Colorado’s diversity is evident in its annual events. The National Western Stock Show is a huge rodeo and stock extravaganza for wranglers held every January; Native American powwows, including a big gathering in late March, take place yearly in Denver; and several mountain towns, each with its own microculture, host regular celebrations, including the International Snow Sculpture Championships and Ullr Fest in Breckenridge and the Telluride Mushroom Festival in August.

Colorado is also the king of scenic outdoor venues and enthusiastic fans, so it attracts phenomenal musical acts from around the world, especially in the summer. Just a couple miles west of Denver, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre —one of the world’s few naturally occurring acoustic arenas—is among the best places to see a show anywhere, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival , held high in the San Juan Mountains, is legendary. Scores more smaller music and food festivals take place around the state throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

Local travel tips for Colorado

— To thrive in Colorado’s high-elevation, desert-like climate, drink plenty of water and bring a sweater on every outing: Temperatures typically plummet after sundown or when clouds move in.

— Beat the crowds during peak ski season by going to smaller, lesser-known mountains. Loveland Ski Area (the closest to Denver) is an undiscovered gem, and Monarch Mountain requires no driving on I-70, where stop-and-go traffic is common on winter weekends.

Summer: Colorado is a fun place to visit at almost any time of year. Summer is the best time to visit Colorado to fully appreciate its beauty. Scenic drives are at their best this time of year, and seasonal mountain roads are open, state and national parks come to life, hiking and biking options are boundless, and you can enjoy the lakes on a summer vacation. This is also high season, so expect hotels and resorts to be busy.

Fall: Fall (September and October) is always popular for the autumn colors. A driving tour this time of year is spectacular, and photographers will be in their element. Also, with kids back in school, tourism in Colorado falls off, and everything is a bit quieter.

Winter : The winter months see skiers and snowboarders descend on the state in search of awesome skiing at the numerous resorts. March is a beautiful time for skiing but it's also the busiest due to spring break. Since different states and regions have different school schedules, you can count on the entire month being busy. Most years, ski conditions are great from Christmas onwards.

Spring: If you want to visit Colorado in spring, you can still work in some spring skiing, since some of the higher resorts, like Arapahoe Basin are open into May or even June. Areas with lower elevations like Fruita or Grand Junction, can be great this time of year and perfect for mountain biking. You can expect generally warm days in low regions. Higher areas will still be completely snow covered.

Denver skyline

Denver makes a great getaway destination for shopping, dining, and visiting attractions. Although this is a city worthy of its own trip, many people who fly into Denver use it as a starting point for their holiday.

Some of the best skiing in Colorado is within a couple of hours' drive of Denver. In summer, the nearby parks are a playground for outdoor activities like hiking and biking. If you want to venture further afield, this is a good place to rent a car and head out on your adventure.

  • The MICHELIN Guide Arrives in Colorado

The Centennial State is getting way more tasty.

Announcement Editor's Pick Michelin Guide

explore colorado 2023 official travel guide

MICHELIN and the Colorado Tourism Office announce the MICHELIN Guide Colorado, the latest expansion of the MICHELIN Guide.

2023 is shaping up to be a delicious year. Having reintroduced California in 2021 and Florida last year, the newest destination for the MICHELIN Guide is Colorado. Known for having a rich culinary community rooted in established, notable chefs along with innovative upstarts, the Rocky Mountain state highlights technique and craft. “Colorado has a dynamic culinary scene, one that’s perfect for the MICHELIN Guide,” says Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of the MICHELIN Guide. “The state’s locations feature many creative restaurant teams and an exciting mix of flavors."

Those flavors are thanks to a coupling of hyperlocal produce and ingredients, sourced sustainably, and the unique cultural influences of the region including German, Hispanic and Native American cultures. (The state is home to several Native American tribes, including the Ute, Navajo and Apache.) “Colorado residents have long enjoyed the expanding food scene of our incredibly talented chefs, who bring locally harvested ingredients to life," says Timothy Wolfe, Director of the Colorado Tourism Office . "The MICHELIN Guide will further elevate Colorado as a global dining destination, serving a variety of flavors with the authentically friendly attitude that can only be found in Colorado.”

While the first MICHELIN Guide Colorado selection will be revealed later in 2023, it will cover Aspen and Snowmass Village, Boulder, Denver, the town of Vail, and Beaver Creek Resort. "We are thrilled to partner with the MICHELIN Guide to highlight the exceptional cuisine, sustainability efforts, and innovation of the culinary industry in Colorado,” says Wolfe. "And it all starts with the freshest seasonal ingredients, such as local fruits, vegetables, fish, and game. Gourmets will travel from near and far to get a taste of what 'Colorful Colorado' has to offer!” adds Poullennec.

The 2023 Colorado restaurant selection joins the MICHELIN Guide selection of hotels later this year and features the most unique and exciting places to stay in Colorado and around the world.

History and Methodology

The upcoming Colorado restaurant selection follows MICHELIN’s historical methodology, based on five universal criteria, to ensure each destination’s selection equity: 1) quality products 2) the harmony of flavors 3) the mastery of cooking techniques 4) the voice and personality of the chef reflected in the cuisine 5) consistency between each visit and throughout the menu (each restaurant is inspected several times a year)

The MICHELIN Guide was first published in France in 1900 as an accompaniment to tire sales providing practical advice on where to dine and stay to local motorists. MICHELIN’s Inspectors still adhere to the same criteria and manner of selection used from launch, and apply them to destinations around the world.

MICHELIN published its first North American Guide in 2005 for New York . Since then, Guides have been added in  Chicago ; California ; Miami/Orlando/Tampa, Florida ;  Washington, D.C. ;  Toronto ; and Vancouver .

Colorado Travel Guide FAQ

Below, find answers to frequently asked questions about traveling in Colorado .

Q: What is the best month to go to Colorado?

The best time to visit Colorado depends on what you want to do while you’re there. The state experiences all four seasons and each one has its perks for travelers.

If you’re planning on taking advantage of the many winter activities Colorado has to offer like skiing and snowboarding, you might want to visit later in the season to avoid the crowds.

You can absolutely wait up to an hour for a lift during the peak of winter! Conditions are usually still good in March and April and you’ll have much more space to yourself on the mountains.

Similarly, you’ll be able to avoid the summer crowds and take advantage of Colorado’s warm-weather activities by visiting in May or September, the shoulder seasons for the summer.

Q: How much money do you need for a trip to Colorado?

Most travelers spend about $150 USD per day on accommodations, food, attractions, transportation, and other expenses in Colorado.

If you’re planning on visiting more than one city in Colorado, definitely check out Omio to find the best fares on transportation between cities and save a little extra cash.

Q: How many days do you need in Colorado?

Most experts recommend planning four to seven days to explore Colorado. This will give you time to visit the state’s major cities like Denver and Boulder as well as major attractions like Rocky Mountain National Park and Colorado Springs.

With some extra time, you can explore some of the states smaller parks or even hit the slopes for a day of skiing or snowboarding.

Q: What are the best things to do in Colorado?

No USA trip would be complete without visiting Colorado, and here’s why:

Colorado’s mountains and natural wonders are definitely the state’s most popular attractions, and for good reason.

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most-visited national parks in the United States and boasts over 100 peaks over 100,000 feet high, tons of hiking trails for trekkers of all levels , and amazing wildlife like elk and sheep.

Pikes Peak, located just outside Colorado Springs, is also a favorite of travelers to Colorado. This mountain is one of a few peaks in the Southwest that stands over 14,000 feet high and is very easy to visit. You can drive up to the summit or take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to enjoy the views from the top.

Also located in Colorado Springs is Garden of the Gods, a National Natural Landmark known for its towering rocks that resemble skyscrapers. The truly adventurous can try their hands at rock climbing but you can also easily enjoy the views from the walking trails that wind through the park.

Moreover, Colorado has a rich history that dates all the way back to prehistoric times. At Dinosaur National Monument in Northwest Colorado, you can find incredibly well-preserved remains of dinosaurs embedded into rocks and the petroglyphs left behind by ancient civilizations.

For (somewhat) more recent history, head to Mesa Verde National Park, home of Cliff Palace. This incredible Ancestral Pueblo dwelling is built right into a cliff and is one of the most incredible sights in the southwest.

Colorado’s ski towns are not to be missed, even if you’re visiting outside of the season. Aspen is a great spot to visit year-round. Beyond the world-class mountains, the town is a top destination for art, restaurants, and shopping.

Vail, another top mountain destination, has much of the charm of an alpine village and boasts plenty of wellness activities like mountain yoga and skiing — though there are many things to do in Vail in summer , too! Plus, it’s home to some of the best bike rides in the world .

Breckenridge also blends the charm of an 1850s Gold Rush town with modern amenities like world-class spas, distilleries , and shopping.

Q: How do I prepare for a trip to Colorado?

The main thing you’ll need to prepare for is the altitude.

Much of the state sits at a high elevation and if you’re not used to it, altitude sickness can sneak up on you. Hydration is key when you’re in Colorado, so bring a water bottle and be sure to drink it.

Along those lines, your alcohol tolerance will probably be lower in Colorado than it is at home. Go easy on the booze if you want to actually remember your trip.

Also, try not to front-load your trip with activities. You’ll need a day or so to adjust to the altitude and doing too much too fast will wear you out quickly.

Despite its reputation as a winter destination, Colorado actually gets more sunny days than most states in the U.S. Sun protection is key, especially if you’re in the mountains. Be sure to wear sunscreen and re-apply often. Hats and sunglasses are also must-haves, regardless of your activities for the day.

Finally, know that the weather in Colorado can change at any minute. Be prepared for whatever the skies may bring; dress in layers, carry an umbrella, and be flexible with your plans. Keep an eye on the weather, too, so you can plan your day accordingly.

Colorado Travel Guide

Colorado Travel Guide: Are you planning a Colorado trip in 2023 step by step to the beautiful state of Colorado? You’re lucky because I’ve got the inside scoop on all the must-see spots and must-do activities. But before you start packing your bags for Colorado, you should know a few things.

First off, let’s talk about the weather. Colorado is known for its drastic temperature changes, so make sure you bring layers. It can be sunny and warm in the morning and then snow in the afternoon, especially in the mountains. And trust me; you don’t want to be caught without a jacket.

Next up, let’s talk about transportation. If you’re planning on hitting the mountains for skiing or hiking, I highly recommend renting a car. Public transportation can be limited in those areas, and driving will give you the most flexibility. Plus, it’ll save you from lugging all your gear on a bus.

Now that we’ve got the practical stuff out of the way let’s get into the fun stuff.

  • Rabies is spread to humans and pets primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

What you need to know

Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. It can be spread to people and pets through the bites and scratches of an infected animal. Rabies primarily affects the central nervous system, leading to severe brain disease and death if medical care is not received before symptoms start.

Immediate medical attention following suspected rabies exposure is critical. Medical care following a rabies exposure is called post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP. PEP includes wound care, a dose of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG), and a series of four or five rabies vaccines, which must be administered as soon as possible after exposure. This care is vital to prevent the disease from developing. It is nearly 100% effective if administered promptly. Each year, 60,000 Americans receive PEP after a potential rabies exposure.

The disease is rare in humans in the United States, with only 1 to 3 cases reported each year. Still, rabies poses a serious public health threat, because of its high death rate in people. It is also present in many wildlife species, nearly 3 in 4 Americans live in a community where raccoons, skunks, or foxes carry rabies.

Animals and rabies

In the United States, more than 90% of reported cases of rabies in animals occur in wildlife. Contact with infected bats is the leading cause of human rabies deaths in this country; at least 7 out of 10 Americans who die from rabies in the US were infected by bats. The animals most often found with rabies in the U.S. include:

While rabid dogs in the US are uncommon, around the world, domestic dogs are responsible for more than 95% of the estimated 70,000 human deaths that occur each year.

People at risk

People who are at increased risk for rabies exposures may want to consider pre-exposure vaccination for increased protection.

People who travel

Since 1990, over 80 people have died from rabies after an exposure during travel. Rabies is prevalent globally except in Antarctica. In Africa, Asia, and specific areas of Central and South America, rabies in dogs is still a major problem. Additionally, access to PEP may be hard to get in those places. As a result, tens of thousands of people die of the disease each year.

When traveling, it is important to keep your distance from wild and unfamiliar animals, including dogs and cats.

Before traveling abroad, consult your doctor, a travel clinic , or your local or state health department about your risk of exposure to rabies.

People who participate in certain leisure activities

People who enjoy outdoor certain outdoor activities that may lead to contact with wildlife, such as spelunking, camping, and hunting are at higher risk of being exposed to rabies, because they may encounter wildlife while participating in these activities.

People who have jobs with animals

People with jobs that involve frequent animal contact, such as veterinary professionals (including technicians), animal control workers, wildlife researchers, wildlife rehabilitation workers, and certain agricultural workers, are at increased risk of a rabies exposure. People who work with or are exposed to wild animals could encounter a wild animal with rabies. People who work with pets may be exposed if a pet is not vaccinated for rabies and/or has encountered a wild animal with rabies.

Rabies prevention efforts by veterinary, wildlife management, and public health professionals mean that human cases of rabies in the U.S. are rare. Veterinarians vaccinate over 40 million cats and dogs each year, and these vaccinations significantly reduce the risk of you or your pets getting rabies. Each year, wildlife management professionals distribute oral vaccines to wildlife, through baits, to control rabies at its source, especially in areas where rabies in wild animals is common.

The best way you can prevent rabies is by:

  • Making sure your pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccines;
  • Keeping wildlife wild - stay away from wildlife for both human and animal safety;
  • Calling animal control to remove stray animals from your neighborhood;
  • Washing bites or scratches immediately with soap and water; and
  • Seeking medical care shortly after potential exposures.

Around the world, large-scale dog vaccination programs are the most effective way to prevent rabies. However, in many countries, there aren't enough resources to reach all the dogs that need it. CDC works with public and private partners to improve vaccine access for people and animals, making travel safer and improving global health.

  • International Rabies Taskforce

Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.
