Former Marquette golfer Hunter Eichhorn learned on a nine-hole course. Is U.S. Open next?

hunter college tour video

Hunter Eichhorn is good at figuring out the lay of the land.

When he arrived at Marquette University to play golf in 2017, Eichhorn had never been on a plane. He left in 2022 as one of the most accomplished golfers in program history, then set out to make his way in the cut-throat professional ranks. Two years later, he's finding some success on the Korn Ferry Tour and trying to land a spot in next month's U.S. Open.

"It’s been about what I expected," Eichhorn said. "There hasn’t been anything too different. Obviously planning your own travel and traveling by yourself and not with the team and obviously having the school take care of everything. That’s a little bit different.

"As far as the golf, there’s a lot of good players. You got to play well if you want to compete. That’s what I expected and I enjoy the challenge of it."

Eichhorn advanced out of local qualifying for the U.S. Open earlier this month by carding a 3-under 69 at Robert T. Jones Golf Trail in Glencoe, Alabama. He'll compete in a 36-hole qualifier on June 3 at one of 10 sites in the U.S. in the hopes of landing one of the non-exempted spots in the field at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina.

There was also a local qualifier at at North Shore Country Club in Mequon in which Harrison Ott, Jack Schultz, Ty Kretz, Coalter Smith and Joe Leonard advanced to the next stage.

"Oh, that would be so special, especially in a place like Pinehurst," Eichhorn said. "The opportunity not only to play in a major but obviously competing against one of the best, if not the best, fields in the world with all the best players in the world. That would be such a great opportunity and obviously an incredible experience to be a part of that."

If you know anything about Eichhorn's history, it's smart not to count him out.

Hunter Eichhorn learned game on nine-hole course in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Eichhorn's backstory is worthy of a Hollywood biopic. He grew up in Carney, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, learning how to play golf at Wild Pines, a local nine-hole course .

"This town is 190 people," MU coach Steve Bailey said. "His grandpa would take him out. He’s never had a swing coach in his life. He’s just learned how to do it his way.

"I think too often these days, guys are maybe too reliant on the coach or technology. Things get a little sideways and halfway through the round they want to go to the range and jump on their Trackman and try to figure out the numbers. Or go call my coach because I can’t figure it out. The beauty of the way he learned the game is that he knows his game. That formula works for him.”

A unique mindset was formed in the ever-changing weather of that latitude.

" The importance of starting out on a course like that, I think helped me understand the importance of a par, a birdie and a bogey," Eichhorn said. "I feel like sometimes you start out, you start playing a course, it’s too hard and you could argue, oh, a good score on that hole is a bogey because you don’t hit it far and you’re young.

" My grandpa and I used to scramble, so we always practiced shooting as low a score as possible. And making as many birdies as possible. That’s all you worry about when you scramble. So that’s how I developed the mindset of, I guess, finding a way to shoot as low a score as possible. From there, just bringing that throughout the levels of golf as I’ve gotten older. And just understanding that those are the type of scores that it takes to compete, especially at the highest levels. You look at the Korn Ferry Tour, every week it’s 20-under or lower to win it seems like. You can’t be afraid to go after birdies. "

Eichhorn couldn't just play golf all year up there – the average yearly snowfall in Carney is 59 inches – so he participated in a range of sports. He ran cross country at Carney-Nadeu High School and was also a standout basketball player.

"I’ve always wanted to be the best at what I do," Eichhorn said. "I had very competitive basketball coaches in high school who weren’t afraid to get on your case about things. That helped me even more develop the competitive edge. It’s just always been an innate thing. If I’m going to do a thing, why not try to be the best at it."

Bailey remembers watching Eichhorn make 12 three-pointers in a game when Carney-Nadeu played at Milwaukee Academy of Science.

"I’m telling you, five or six of these were a step across halfcourt," Bailey said. "It was crazy."

Trying to make Korn Ferry Tour and U.S. Open

Bailey knew right away that Eichhorn had a chance to be a pro. For his first event at MU, Eichhorn got on a plane for the first time and won in Texas. He went on to be Big East player of the year three times.

"People always ask, well, how do you compete in this climate?" Bailey said. "How are you able to go play certain teams down South after going through a winter?

"And Hunter’s last year, our first event in the spring was in Puerto Rico. It was in February. And he shoots the lowest round in all of college golf that year. He shot 61 in the first event in February.

"So I always use that. Like, hey, this guy’s able to do it, why can’t you? Just impressive. You can post numbers like that and it translates, because that’s what you need to do at that (pro) level. A lot of folks you see get to 3- or 4-under and they’re just trying to hold on. It’s just that mentality. Hey, it’s my day and I’m stepping on the gas. I’m going to keep dropping the hammer."

But it's not easy trying to make a living in professional golf. Talented people give up on the dream every year.

Eichhorn doesn't have full-time status on the Korn Ferry Tour. So he tries to make events as a Monday qualifier. If he finishes high enough – like he did when he was fifth at the Veritex Bank Championship in April – then he earns a spot in the next event. For those who don't make the event, there is an All Pro Tour that runs concurrently with the Korn Ferry.

Eichhorn is sponsored by Island Resort and Casino in the Upper Peninsula to help cover travel costs and event fees. But it takes a certain mentality to keep going in that week-to-week existence.

“Not every day is perfect,' Eichhorn siad. "Not every day you do the things that you say you are going to do. There’s so many good players out there, you just want to give yourself a little bit of an edge. Regardless of how you get that. It’s different for everybody, especially in golf. It’s very unique to the individual."

Eichhorn is going to keep attacking his dream. He hopes to earn full-time status on the Korn Ferry Tour, either by winning enough events or going through qualifying school. There's also the hope for one of those spots in the U.S. Open.

Bailey doesn't worry about Eichhorn. The coach's only advice is to not forget about being the golfer who figured things out on that nine-hole course in the U.P.

"You know your way to do it and don’t ever let anybody take that away from you," Bailey said. "Because you’re going to get a lot of people whispering in your ear and saying this or that or 'go see someone.'

"Sure, there are going to be things that people can help you with along the way, but stay in your lane. Trust in what you know. It’s obviously served him well and will continue to."

Hunter Tours: East building

East building is where you're going to find the library; aka home for the rest of your life at hunter :( I'm gonna take you on a little tour of the 6th floor, which is probably the best floor of the library. This is a super important building bc it's going to be your best friend during finals and midterm week

The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.

So this is the East building where the hunter College library is held. Honestly, this slick of very, very conveniently library. It's really important Super long doctor, which is why I show also this is an e mail back. We're all going to the library together to work because we are swarming with Burke two. Oh, God, that was a really, really bad angle of the story. I want you out of these out escalators right in front of the library, and it's very convenient because it is really right there. You could also get to the library from the the bridge like lead you all to the same place and I do. Once again, it's just tap your card and return. Shelving opens and you're free to walk in and you're automatically on the third floor on DH. There are people studying here, too. So we're gonna go to the sixth floor because you could, like, talk there and you won't get yelled at Arsenal, quiet floors and some silent forces libraries where they where also, these air stairs were not taking stairs because I'm super early disease or we're going to go take the elevator. Elevators are really weird, some of them say upper down. If you can see, um, that just means like, they only go in one direction on DH on ly, the elevators can take you out from the third to the seven. The down elevators will take you down from third. Just be where, like, it tells you what you get in just like, don't step into throwing elevator. So after six floor, I really like this where I feel like it's really common chill and you won't get killed that for her talking too loud or whatever. There's, like, a lot of seats and stuff where you can just, like, chill on this. Like more private eyes, study areas like by the wall. For though that I want to show you that there are these classrooms settings, uh, where you could just rent a room for yourself to study or like classes are sometimes hold in here, too. This was like a really big screen, and you couldn't control on your own. I honestly, if you're here for a movie, I'm going to cry because, like, sometimes they really need a room and I see people watching, like Shrek. Um, their books here, I've literally never seen a single person like, look for these books, so So I feel like it's more of the Chilean people excited stuff. There's a super nice of you, but I want to show you this like Booth seating place where there's like a TV and a table on DH there usually always taken up because they're, like, very private, and it's like a really good place to study. So it's more one of you seated together really early, Yeah..

Hunter, the versatile player from West Palm Beach, has been a critical figure for the Colorado Buffaloes .

However, when EA Sports approached the defensive back to feature him as one of the three college football players on the cover of the highly anticipated College Football 25 video game, Hunter kept it under wraps, adding another feather to his cap.

“I didn’t tell anybody, so nobody knew it,” Hunter said with a smile.

Given the reaction from friends, family and teammates once it was announced he was on the cover along with Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, Hunter offered a simple response for downplaying his approach.

“They wanted to know why I didn’t tell anybody,” he said, laughing.

Hunter joins a long list of players to have graced the cover of some version of EA Sports’ college football video game, including Nebraska’s Tommie Frasier, Florida’s Danny  Wuerffel , Michigan’s Charles Woodson, Texas’ Ricky Williams and Florida’s Tim Tebow .

“There’s no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be on the cover, so I just went straight to work and did everything they told me I needed to do,” Hunter said.

College Football 25 is set to make a global comeback on July 19, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s previous edition was unveiled almost a decade ago, thus heightening the anticipation and making this reveal one of the most thrilling events in the gaming community.

The details of the game have been shrouded in secrecy and guarded with the utmost care. Those granted access to them have been compelled to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements, underscoring the level of confidentiality and the game’s highly anticipated nature.

When EA Sports Orlando hosted a private event last week for some of the top games and journalists to get a sneak peek of the game and its details, attending members were asked to sign NDAs and agree not to photograph or video any game material.

Few details have been made public about the game, which has been a labor of love for many of those who work at EA Orlando Studios.

Rob Jones, senior production director, returned to work on the new college football game after spending time developing games such as Madden NFL and NBA2K.

“I was super excited because, like everybody else, I was extremely disappointed when the series went away,” Jones told the Orlando Sentinel. “This was also a brand-new challenge for me. I had done NFL, NBA, and college basketball, and then having a chance to shape what college football could be like from an experience was a brand-new thing.”

When Jones returned four years ago, his first job was assembling a team to bring life to the game. A lot has changed in the decade since NCAA Football 14 — the game’s last version — was released.

The most significant change came in 2021 as athletes were allowed to be financially compensated for their name, image and likeness (NIL). That allowed EA Sports to step back into the business of making college football games.

Football Bowl Subdivision players can now be represented in the game, with 13,000 already signing with EA Sports through an NIL deal.

Jaden Rashada sues Gators for backing out on NIL deal after he backed out on ‘Canes | Commentary

The schools also reached licensing agreements for stadiums, uniforms, cheers, fight songs and other components to create the most comprehensive and lifelike college football game possible.

  • Approximately 16,000 headshots of players were scanned into the system to create lifelike representations with 240 head shapes that can be used to create your own player.
  • The team recreated 150 stadiums, including those at Kansas and Vanderbilt, currently under construction. Schools provided approximately 80,000 photos to help, along with lidar scanning in some cases.
  • Traditions like running down the hill into Clemson’s Memorial Stadium were recreated with motion-capture cameras. Band members, cheerleaders and mascots were also recreated.
  • The team scored the rights to 180 fight songs and music, such as “Zombie Nation,” used by several schools, including UCF.

“The schools leaned into this, and the response has been amazing,” said Jones.

“Passion is what you’ll see in this product,” said Daryl Holt, senior vice president and group general manager at EA Sports.

EA Sports teamed up with ESPN broadcasters such as Chris Fowler , Kirk Herbstreit , Desmond Howard, Rece Davis, Jesse Palmer and Kevin Connors to record hundreds of hours of audio.

Fowler spent two and a half years working with the design team, recording 115 hours. He was also forced to keep his role in the game a secret before sharing a few videos on Instagram that drew reactions.

“I was initially surprised because I couldn’t talk about this for a long time,” Fowler said. “I couldn’t even say I was in the game. It got out there kind of and it wasn’t a very well-kept secret, but I couldn’t talk about it and when I finally did that first video, it just blew up.”

The challenge was bringing the same passion he’s used to displaying on television into the game: 750 player names needed to be spoken, and calls needed to be made for almost every play imaginable.

“The routine plays are not that big deal, but the touchdown calls are what people remember in any video game,” said Fowler. “So you want to get that part right.”

EA Sports has always prided itself on the realism of its games, and fans can experience the ins and outs of college football whether as a team builder, a coach, a player or a high school recruit.

The various levels, such as Dynasty, Road to Glory, Road to the College Football Playoff and Ultimate Team, allow the participant to experience the game at a whole new level.

For Jones, it’s been a labor of love for himself and his team, which he credits.

“The right people in the right place make magic, and that’s what I think we were able to create,” he said.

Hunter, who played the game for the first time during last week’s event, would agree.

“It’s a better game for sure,” Hunter said.

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are sharing their academic journey as part of season 11 of “The College Tour,” now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

A groundbreaking series from Emmy-nominated producers Alex Boylan, Lisa Hennessy and Burton Roberts, “The College Tour” is hosted by Boylan, a winner of “The Amazing Race.” The show travels the country telling stories at colleges and universities through the diverse lens of its students, giving the view an intimate portrayal of life on campus. The show serves as a vehicle to help students across the world connect with higher education, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future without having to travel anywhere.

“The Pointers featured in ‘The College Tour’ have meaningful stories about how they discovered their purpose at UW-Stevens Point,” said Chancellor Thomas Gibson. “Some are athletes, some are first-generation students, some are from outside of the United States. What ties them together is the support, mentorship and growth they found on our campus. They are truly inspiring ambassadors for UWSP.”

Shining a spotlight on the diverse landscape of today’s colleges, “The College Tour” offers viewers a comprehensive look at campuses across the country, highlighting the many resources and opportunities that are helping students thrive. “The College Tour ” shows just how these institutions are setting students up for success, said Boylan.

One featured student, Maria Hartley, a business administration major from Wisconsin Rapids, is grateful for being in the show as she built skills she can use as a future business leader.

“This experience has helped confirm that pushing myself outside my comfort zone is where growth and opportunities truly lie,” she said. “I gained confidence in my abilities and in the energy I can bring to the table, which I can show my future employers.”

“UW-Stevens Point offers students an extraordinary experience, and we’re so excited to share that on ‘The College Tour,’” said Boylan. “For students, choosing which college to attend is a monumental decision, and this episode gives prospective students a first-hand look at what makes this school so special.”

Find “The College Tour” on Amazon Prime Video or at www.uwsp.edu/admissions-aid/the-college-tourwww.uwsp.edu/the-college-tour/ , where you can learn more about attending UW-Stevens Point.
