Fun for the entire family.

The Downeast Scenic Railroad offers a wonderful 12-mile round-trip train ride from Hancock, Maine, through Ellsworth Falls, and across the Union River Bridge on the former Maine Central Railroad. The beautifully restored passenger train, with vintage locomotives and coaches, staffed by our all-volunteer crew, is the first passenger train to run on these tracks since 1960.

The relaxing hour and 45-minute rides are offered on Saturdays and Sundays beginning Memorial Day weekend through the weekend after Columbus Day. Each train ride is narrated with information about the area and relevant railroad history. Check the schedule on our website for the dates, number of trips per day, times, holidays, and specials. Advanced booking is encouraged. We invite you and your family to come enjoy a leisurely trip back in time.

  • Comfortable seating is provided in our renovated coaches. Picnic table seating is available in our canopy-covered open-air car.
  • Bottled water and snacks may be purchased on the train.

What People Are Saying About Us

The 1-1/2 hour narrated train ride was truly a step back in time. The conductor was extremely knowledgable and passionate. The rail car we rode in had a great background that was explained on a plaque that was highly visible. The ride, turn-around - and "Y" procedure make one appreciate how hard rail travel really was in time past.

Went on this with my dear friends! So glad we did. The crew was wonderful & informative. I’m so glad we didn’t miss this. It is a great ride for the children. Has some great history behind it, also a work in progress that I hope continues for years to come.

Fun Scenic and a historic train ride! for an hour and a half, you can tour the local area from the comfort of the seating on the train-let the engineer do the driving for a bit, slow down, and remember history.

Nice train ride through along a preserved train track. The turn around is particularly interesting. Families would have a fun time on this ride, just long enough-even for smaller kids

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner

The best train rides in the USA for seriously gorgeous views

From coastal routes to journeys through the mountains, these train rides spotlight all of America's most stunning scenery.

Clara Hogan

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train.

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in.

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Whether you're looking for a multi-day adventure or a route that only lasts a few hours, these train rides won't disappoint.

An email you’ll actually love

Best train rides in the USA

Rockies to the Red Rocks

1.  Rockies to the Red Rocks

Denver, co to moab, ut.

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

Coast Starlight

2.  Coast Starlight

Los angeles, ca to seattle, wa.

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows.

Pacific Surfliner

3.  Pacific Surfliner

San diego, ca to san luis obispo, ca.

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state.

The Grand Canyon Railway

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, az to the grand canyon, az.

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas.

The Empire Builder

5.  The Empire Builder

Chicago, il to portland, or.

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight.

The Alaska Denali Star

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, ak to fairbanks, ak.

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild.

Skunk Train

7.  Skunk Train

Willits, ca.

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson city, nc.

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton woods, nh.

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day.

The Napa Valley Wine Train

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa valley, ca.

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

California Zephyr

11.  California Zephyr

Emeryville, ca to reno, nv.

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.

The Hawaiian Railway Society

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, co to silverton, co.

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

The Ethan Allen Express

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

New york city, ny to burlington, vt.

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

Via Railway Experience|5-Day Vancouver to Rockies Railway Full Experience Tour Departure

We enjoyed our tour very much, the sights were beautiful, staff we well informed. A highlight for us was the optional evening photographic tour. The only thing stopping me from giving five stars was the last day felt very rushed, especially at the Banff gondola as the queue to get on took half an hour and not enough time allocated to our lunch at the Lake Louise Chateau, we had to ask the waitress to bring out the dessert while we were eating the main as we only had 15 minutes until the bus left. Allocate a bit more time for those things and you will get five stars.

It was an amazing experience. Scott was a great tour guide. I found it was a great mix of showing us things and free time to wander on your own. Would definitely do it again. The only down side was when the train did not leave and we had to figure out how to get to Montreal our selves

Truly stunning mountain scenery through the Rockies to Vancouver with guest appearances from bears, elk, eagles and gophers! A well paced and organised trip led by an excellent guide Sibylle. Travelling in style on the Rocky Mountaineer was a memorable experience, even though we were in Silver Leaf. A class operation. A minor gripe that there was so little time at the end of the tour in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, luckily we added a couple of extra nights in Vancouver to explore the city.

Pennsylvania Scenic Train Rides (2024): A Complete Guide

logoad1.jpg

Last revised: October 13, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

With such a diverse history, Pennsylvania scenic train rides offer everything imaginable. The state features one of the most prolific collection of railroad attractions throughout the country with numerous museums and rides available.

  • One can enjoy fine dining on the Tioga Central Railroad.
  • Walk among exquisitely preserved rolling stock at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania Railroad.
  • Take a trip back in time to the 19th century aboard the Strasburg Railroad (the second most popular scenic train ride in the country, witnessing more than 400,000 riders annually).

Pennsylvania also boasts a vast collection of operational steam locomotives at such places as Steamtown in Scranton and the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad in New Hope.

Finally, you can catch trolley rides at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Electric City Trolley Museum, and the Rockhill Trolley Museum.

Please note!   This guide information covers Pennsylvania scenic train rides related to vacation/tourism destinations-only.  If you are interested in long-distance rail travel please visit  Amtrak's website , our nation's passenger rail carrier.

State Rail History

Pennsylvania's rail history dates back to the Baltimore & Ohio's chartering (America's first common-carrier).  In 1827 the tiny Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad was built to haul coal from a mine near Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe).

According to an in-depth article  Trains Magazine  published in its January, 2007 issue entitled, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," this operation is also believed to be America's first tourist railroad.

After coal movements ceased in 1872, the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) acquired the railroad in 1874 and subsequently leased it to brothers Theodore and H. L. Mumford who converted the line into a tourist attraction.

It proved quite popular and carried on under this arrangement for more than a half-century.  On May 24, 1929 the CNJ sold the property where it became the stand-alone Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway Company.

Alas, this enterprise proved short-lived; a victim of the Great Depression, it closed in 1932.

For Pennsylvania, its involvement with modern railroads began with the construction of a canal (officially known as the Pennsylvania Canal) on February 25, 1826 to connect Harrisburg with Pittsburgh.

A few years later plans were finalized for an extension to Philadelphia.

In an interesting design, engineers came up with an interlinking railroad/canal system, collectively known as the Main Line of Public Works.

While successful, officials quickly realized an all-rail route was the most efficient.  It could operate at greater speeds and in all types of weather.

Fearful their port of Philadelphia would fall behind rivals New York, Charleston, and Baltimore, they decided on just such an arrangement and, according to Mike Schafer and Brian Solomon's book, " Pennsylvania Railroad ," chartered the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1846.

The PRR became the most powerful and successful railroad in America, carrying an impeccable credit rating and unimaginable cash reserves.

By the early 20th century it operated more than 10,000 route miles, track mileage totaling 28,000, and served 11 states.

It confidently (and arrogantly) proclaimed itself, " The Standard Railroad Of The World ."  But the PRR was not Pennsylvania's only railroad.

Several other widely recognized names also served it some fashion including the Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Reading Railroad, Lehigh & New England, Erie Railroad, and Delaware, Lackawanna & Western.

Pennsylvania's importance to the industry even transcended railroads:

  • The country's largest (and nearly oldest) steam locomotive manufacturer was located in Eddystone (Baldwin Locomotive Works).
  • General Electric's plant in Erie has produced locomotives since the early 20th century.
  • J. G. Brill Company out-shopped streetcar and interurban equipment at its Philadelphia facility from 1869 until 1954 (then under the name, ACF-Brill Motors Company).

Finally, don't miss the Keystone State's numerous engineering landmarks; Tunkhannock Viaduct (Nicholson), Starrucca Viaduct (Lanesboro), remains of the Kinzua Viaduct (McKean County), Horseshoe Curve (near Altoona), and the 48-arch Rockville Bridge spanning the Susquehanna River.

In his book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads ," historian John F. Stover points out Pennsylvania's rail mileage peaked at 11,551 in 1920, ranking 3rd among all 50 states.

Unfortunately, for many reasons, ranging from market loss to government regulation, a staggering 55.5% of this rail infrastructure has since been abandoned (6,421 miles).

The Association of American Railroads notes that today, just 5,130 miles remain in service.

  • Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, highlighting the first railroad built through the Allegheny Mountains in central Pennsylvania.

  • Allentown & Auburn Railroad

This short line began in 2015 and operates just over 4 miles of a former Reading Railroad branch between Kutztown and an interchange with Norfolk Southern at Topton.

The railroad also offers public excursions, utilizing a restored, early SW locomotive that was originally built for the Philadelphia, Bethlehem & New England in March, 1937.  The trips are hosted with three cabooses, one coach, and an open flatcar.

  • Bellefonte Historical Railroad

This organization tells the history of railroading in Bellefonte and Centre County, Pennsylvania. They are housed inside the restored Bald Eagle Valley/Pennsylvania Railroad's brick depot, which originally opened on February 11, 1889.

  • Catawissa Railroad Company

The Catawissa Railroad Company, located in Catawissa, is actually a collection of restored cabooses painted in their original company colors, some of which can be rented for overnight  stays. Also be sure to see the town's preserved Catawissa Railroad (a component of the Reading Railroad) depot.

  • Connellsville Canteen Museum

This museum, a non-profit organization operated by the Fayette County Cultural Trust, is located in the once-busy railroad town of Connellsville.

Their overall mission is to preserve the history of Fayette County's World War II soldiers and veterans, and the sacrifices they made during that conflict.

In addition, they also feature a very nice model train layout known as the Great Indian Creek Valley Railroad, designed and built by Harry Clark.

If you're hungry be sure and stop by their café for either breakfast or lunch.  To learn more, plan a visit, and see all of their displays please visit their website.

  • Train Rides In PA At A Glance

As mentioned above, while the state's involvement with railroads, even in their most rudimentary form, can be traced back to the 1820's, it was the Pennsylvania Railroad's (PRR) opening of its main line from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh in late 1852 that truly brought Pennsylvania into the modern age.

The PRR would eventually grow into a Goliath system as the most powerful railroad in the country with more than 10,000 miles stretching from New York to Chicago with its trackage was heavily concentrated in its home state.

In January, 2007 Trains Magazine published a nearly cover-to-cover piece on all the 50 states' histories with railroads.  It was entitled  " Great Railroading: State-By-State ."

There was considerable coverage given to Pennsylvania, which spoke about its far-reaching operations from magnificent steam locomotives grinding up Horseshoe Curve to small 3-foot, narrow-gauge systems.

The state was also home to substantial streetcar and interurban operations.

train tour rides near me

As a whole, scenic train rides in PA do a fine job of highlighting the memory of these transportation companies.

In few other states can you ride behind, or peruse, rail equipment which includes steam locomotives, diesels, and trolleys.

No other attraction provides quite the level of authenticity as the Strasburg Railroad .  It features a fine collection of preserved steam locomotives which take passengers on a 4.5-mile journey through beautiful Lancaster County.

Trips are enjoyed within restored, wooden cars which range from simple coach class to a full-service dining experience.

The charm is only furthered by Pennsylvania's popular Amish Country setting.  If you're after more than just a train, however, consider visiting one of the premier museums in the country right nearby, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania just outside of Lancaster.

There is also the Steamtown National Historic in Scranton which maintains an impressive collection of steam locomotives.  In all, train rides in PA offer a little of everything and definitely are worth considering!

  • The Choo Choo Barn ("Traintown")

Located in Boyertown in Lancaster County this attraction is very near the Strasburg Railroad.  It features a 1,700-foot train layout display for visitors to enjoy.  This is certainly worth a visit if you are planning a trip to ride the Strasburg!

  • Colebrookdale Railroad

A relatively new tourist attraction, the Colebrookdale Railroad, also known as the  Secret Valley Line , began hosting trips in 2014, operating 8.6 miles between Boyertown and Pottstown.

The trackage was originally built by a company carrying the same name, later operated by the Reading Railroad. For more information please visit their website.

  • East Broad Top Railroad

The East Broad Top Railroad, chartered in 1856, was built as a coal hauler, via a line that connected Mt. Union with Woodvale.

After freight operations ended it became a tourist attraction for decades, blossoming into one of Pennsylvania's most popular and successful train rides.  Alas, these trips were discontinued in 2011.

The railroad is currently under a major restoration by new owners East Broad Top Foundation, which began in February, 2020.  Limited excursions resumed in 2021 with a full schedule hopefully available in 2022.

The EBT is a National Historic Landmark.  Long terms plans include reopening as much of the original 33-mile system as possible, much of which has been out of service since 1956.

Politics latest: Scottish government survives no confidence vote - as top Tory told off for unflattering nickname

The Scottish government has survived a vote of no confidence ahead of an SNP leadership contest, triggered by Humza Yousaf's resignation. Down in Westminster, Rishi Sunak has welcomed Boris Johnson's campaigning for Tory candidates in tomorrow's local elections.

The infected blood compensation scheme is to be extended to bereaved children who have lost one or two parents, Sky News understands.

This group has not been involved in the interim compensation scheme previously paid to victims of the scandal.

Tony Farrugia, who lost his haemophiliac father (and two uncles) to HIV/AIDs after being treated with infected blood products, described his meeting with the Paymaster General John Glen on Wednesday as "emotional".

Mr Farrugia said this significant moment "wasn't just about the money but that his loss has finally been recognised".

He will now be able to apply to the compensation scheme after Sir Brian Langstaff's report is published on 20 May.

You can read more from Sky News here:

Nominations have now opened in the SNP leadership contest to find a replacement for First Minister Humza Yousaf after he announced he was stepping down.

Senior figures have backed former deputy first minister John Swinney for the top job, while a smaller number of the party's parliamentarians have backed former finance secretary Kate Forbes.

Mr Yousaf has said he will stay on to allow a successor to be chosen.

How does the contest work?

The SNP's national secretary announced nominations had opened Monday at 11.59pm.

They will close next Monday.

Prospective candidates will need to gain the support of 100 members from 20 different SNP branches in order to qualify for the contest.

What happens next?

Whoever wins the contest will then need to be able to win enough votes in Holyrood to be elected first minister.

The SNP needs just two votes to secure an overall majority.

The most likely backers for the SNP would be the Greens, given both parties are pro-independence.

However, the Greens announced last week they would not support the first minister in a confidence vote after Mr Yousaf scrapped the powersharing agreement between the party and the SNP, which eventually led to his political downfall.

The Scottish government has survived a motion of no confidence brought by Scottish Labour.

The motion was defeated by 70 votes to 58.

Despite having the backing of the Scottish Tories and Liberal Democrats, the motion did not have the support of the Scottish Greens.

Scottish Labour pressed ahead with its motion despite Humza Yousaf announcing his resignation as SNP leader and first minister earlier this week.

Douglas Ross, the leader of the Scottish Tories, just caused a ruckus in Holyrood after launching an attack on could-be SNP leaders John Swinney and Kate Forbes.

He begins by pointing to Ms Forbes' claim that she would want to hold an independence referendum within three months of a general election.

Mr Ross says she is "an even more radical nationalist" than Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf.

Turning to Mr Swinney, Mr Ross refers to him as "honest John".

This doesn't impress the presiding officer, who tells him: "We do not use nicknames in the chamber."

Mr Ross quips: "I thought it was on accuracy because it would be not-so honest John with some of the things we've heard recently."

He is told to apologise as an uproar sounds in the chamber, but he refuses twice.

Asked a third time, he says he is "very sorry" for any upset caused.

Responding, outgoing first minister Humza Yousaf is on his feet in Holyrood.

Mr Yousaf resigned from the role this week after just a year in the top job, kicking off a leadership election for the Scottish National Party.

He criticises Anas Sarwar for launching an "attack" on potential candidates John Swinney and Kate Forbes, joking it was the "fastest Labour U-turn" after claiming the no confidence motion was not personal.

Mr Yousaf says: "Every single member of this Scottish Parliament… they are all elected, let's not cast any doubt on that.

"When it comes to attacking my colleagues… let me remind Anas Sarwar that when they put themselves up for the vote, up to the people's verdict… they won.

"Unlike Anas Sarwar. So let's not talk about unelected vs elected."

Mr Yousaf says he is sure the motion of no confidence will be "defeated".

He adds that, as a government, he is "exceptionally proud of our choices".

At the Scottish Parliament, MSPs are debating a motion of no confidence.

Anas Sarwar, the leader of Scottish Labour, begins by thanking Humza Yousaf for his public service, after news he has resigned as leader of the Scottish National Party.

But Mr Sarwar says: "For me and Labour this has never been about just one person."

Instead, he says this is about the "future", with Scotland in need of "competent" leadership "to take on the twin crises facing our nation.

"An economic crisis and an NHS crisis. And I have no confidence in the SNP's ability to deliver that."

Mr Sarwar puts forward two arguments - that the SNP are "chaotic" and "divided", and that it "can't deliver competent government".

"I don't believe that changes if you merely change the face at the top."

He points to the two most likely candidates to replace Mr Yousaf, John Swinney and Kate Forbes, saying there are reports members would actively try to stop the latter from forming a government.

This would cause "more chaos", the Scottish Labour leader says.

He goes on to say that "it should be for the people to decide who leads our country, not a backroom deal, not a staged coronation by a group of SNP members".

The debate on the motion of no confidence in the Scottish government is getting started in Holyrood.

Scottish Labour is pressing ahead with its motion despite Humza Yousaf announcing his resignation as SNP leader and first minister earlier this week.

The debate is expected to last about half an hour and will be followed immediately by a vote.

If the motion passes, all ministers in the minority SNP government will be forced to quit.

The Scottish parliament will then have 28 days to appoint a new first minister, failing which, a snap election would be called.

Despite having the backing of the Scottish Tories and Liberal Democrats, it is not expected to pass as it does not have the support of the Scottish Greens.

The Greens were unceremoniously dumped out of the coalition by Mr Yousaf, prompting a fallout which led to his resignation.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has brought the motion, and we're expecting the result of the vote at around 3.30pm.

The fact a failed asylum seeker volunteered to go to Rwanda demonstrates that claims the country is not safe are "untrue", Kemi Badenoch has said.

The business secretary also declared there is no "cost-free option" on border security, as she defended the "minimal" price tag of sending migrants there.

An unnamed man was sent on a commercial flight to Rwanda on Monday after being offered up to £3,000 in financial aid to help with relocation costs.

He is the first person to have moved to the east African country under a voluntary returns scheme for those who have gone through the asylum process and had permission to stay in the UK rejected.

This voluntary scheme, which was widened to include Rwanda earlier this year, is separate from the government's controversial plan to forcibly deport those arriving via small boats in the English Channel to the African country - a policy that came into law last weekfollowing two years of setbacks.

Critics have branded the voluntary removal an "extortionate pre-election gimmick" and a "con" that "won't stop the boats".

However, speaking on Sky News, Ms Badenoch sought to paint it as a victory for the government's wider migration policy, saying: "I'm pleased that we've finally seen one person going to Rwanda.

"Yes, this is under the voluntary scheme, but this also shows the point about Rwanda not being safe to be untrue because people are volunteering to go."

Boris Johnson is "welcome" to campaign for Conservative candidates, the prime minister's spokesperson has said, as Sky News reveals the Tory mayor of the West Midlands is sending voters an endorsement from the former prime minister.

Sky's deputy political editor Sam Coates says Andy Street's campaign team is sending out literature with pictures of him and Mr Johnson, which openly admits problems with the Conservatives' reputation ( see post at 11am ).

Meanwhile, his campaign website makes no mention of Rishi Sunak on its homepage and is coloured in green rather than Conservative blue.

West Midlands race 'very important'

Sam says it suggests the mayor is trying to run on his credentials as an independent campaigner rather than under the unpopular Tory brand.

Asked how the prime minister feels about northern mayors appearing to distance themselves from him, while highlighting an alliance with Mr Johnson, the spokesperson said "of course we would welcome" Mr Johnson's involvement in any campaigns.

"When you look at the absolute mess that Labour have made of Birmingham City Council, pretty much driven it to bankruptcy, it's no surprise that Conservatives think this race is, absolutely, very important."

The other candidates in the West Midlands are:

  • Siobhan Harper-Nunes, Greens;
  • Richard Parker, Labour;
  • Sunny Virk, Lib Dems;
  • Elaine Ruth Williams, Reform;
  • Akhmed Yakoob, independent.

Officers have raided the homes of the first people to be deported to Rwanda.

It comes following the recent passing of the Safety of Rwanda Act, which declared the central African nation safe following concerns raised by the Supreme Court last year.

A video released by the Home Office showed officers entering homes and bringing out people detained in handcuffs, before putting them in the back of secure vans.

According to the government, "operational teams within the Home Office have been working at pace to safely and swiftly detain individuals in scope for relocation to Rwanda, with more activity due to be carried out in the coming weeks".

It comes after a failed asylum seeker voluntarily chose to go to Kigali once their application to stay in the UK failed.

The Rwanda plan has been a major policy for the Conservative government since April 2022, but has faced repeated legal challenges.

The government has previously said it has 2,200 "detention spaces", alongside 200 new caseworkers and 500 "highly trained escorts" ready.

It added that planes have been booked, with flights set to take off in nine to 11 weeks' time.
