Made In America: A Guide To Northeast Factory Tours

Satiate your travelers’ curiosity about their favorite brands with engaging factory tours across the Northeast. No factory tour experience is the same as offerings vary across attractions. Some are whimsical and family-oriented experiences, while some are in-depth looks at classic American-made products. Historical walking tours, product demonstrations, or themed activities can make for a fun, yet educational group visit. No matter your group’s interest, the Northeast has plenty of factory tours that can be tailored to your needs. (Plus, you might even get to bring home a handmade souvenir!)

For instance, art enthusiasts rejoice at creative experiences that showcase the simple art of crayon production to the skill required to create glass masterpieces. The Crayola Experience in Easton, Pennsylvania, is the premier Crayola attraction celebrating the magic of color. Just a short drive from Philadelphia and New York City, the Crayola Experience invites visitors of all ages to think bigger, brighter, and bolder through its many interactive exhibits. As part of the attraction’s programming, visitors learn some little-known facts about the production of Crayola’s colorful tools that are made just down the road in Easton.

Tasty Tours

Does your group have a sweet tooth? Then Hershey’s Chocolate World in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is the perfect place to add to your next itinerary. Tourgoers can create their own candy bar with all their favorite flavors and even design the wrapper. Groups of 20 or more are eligible for ticket bundles, meal deals, and sweet treat vouchers.

Another sugary site is the Ben & Jerry’s Factory Experience in Waterbury, Vermont. This impressive facility manufactures over 350,000 pints per day while offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite ice cream is made. The tour includes a short movie about the company’s history followed by an explanation of how pints are created, all while groups overlook the production roomfloor and enjoy a sample or two.

Herr’s Snack Factory Tour and Visitor’s Center in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, offers the answer to the question, “What makes a great potato chip?” On your private tour, start with a short film about the history of the company and then explore the potato chip factory with the help of a personal guide and accompanying videos. Along the way, groups will learn fun facts about their favorite salty snack and can shop for souvenirs.

The Sam Adams Brewery in Boston, Massachusetts, offers a variety of tours. Depending on your group’s selection, tours include a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process, a brewer Q&A, brewhouse tours, and beer and cheese samplings. For a nonalcoholic option, pay a visit to Avery’s Beverages in New Britain, Connecticut. Sherman F. Avery began making soda in the summer of 1904, and the company’s approach to soda-making remains largely the same over 100 years later. Today, groups can visit the property to sample and make their own craft sodas. During tours of the soda factory, groups visit the mixing room to measure syrup into each bottle, watch as the bottles are filled, and then hand shake each one. Groups can take home three bottles of their very own handmade soda and an official soda makers apron.

Historic Brands

Some factory tours expose groups to the processes used to create products famed for their quality and longevity. Pairpoint Glass Co. in Massachusetts was founded in 1837, making it America’s oldest glassblowing company. When visiting today, groups can watch a team of glassblowers use traditional techniques and tooling that have been handed down through generations while learning about the history of this storied company.

Mack trucks have been around for the past 100 years, and the process of making these beloved vehicles has long since been perfected. Automobile enthusiasts can visit the Mack Experience Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where visitors can take a deep dive into Mack’s rich history, complete product lineup, and manufacturing through innovative attractions. Exhibits include “Uptime in Real Time,” which simulates the operations of the Mack Uptime Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, a walk through the Mack Product Showroom, and a trip through the Mack Trucks Historical Museum’s collection of restored and preserved vintage trucks and memorabilia.

For nearly two centuries, Mason & Hamlin has used only the finest materials and methods to produce its high-quality pianos. Today, these instruments are used on stages across the country and are prized by audiences and performers alike for their distinctive, beautiful tone. Now, your group can tour the Mason & Hamlin Piano Factory Tour in Haverhill, Massachusetts, a town 45 minutes north of Boston, to learn how these instruments are made.

Lean into nostalgia with a trip to the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory in Shelburne, Vermont. Book a tour and your group can receive a Bear Ambassador escort as you learn the history of the company, how the fur is cut, and how bears are assembled, before making a stop at the bear hospital.

Taylor Swift Resumes ‘Eras Tour’ in Portugal: What Time Will It Start in EST Zone?

Taylor Swift Resumes Eras Tour in Portugal What Time Will It Start in EST Zone

No matter where Taylor Swift takes her Eras Tour , fans around the world have made a habit of tuning in, so Swifties will no doubt be watching from home as she hits the stage in Portugal.

The pop star, 34, will perform two concerts at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25. The show will begin at 6 p.m. local time, with Paramore opening for Swift. Lisbon is five hours ahead of the East Coast, so it will be 1 p.m. EST when Paramore kicks off the concert.

Swift is expected to begin her set at 7:15 p.m. local time, which will be 2:15 p.m. EST. Her “surprise song” acoustic section will occur at 9:55 p.m. in Lisbon, meaning East Coast-based fans should follow along via livestreams and social media updates at 4:55 p.m. to find out which songs she selects from her extensive catalog. The show will conclude 35 minutes later.

Following a two-month hiatus from her tour and the April release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , Swift made several major changes to her setlist. In addition to adding seven songs from her new album , she also reordered the existing sections, cut a handful of previous tracks, combined the Folklore and Evermore segments and introduced a slew of new costumes.

Feature Every Change Taylor Swift Has Made to The Eras Tour for the European Leg

Swift thanked her team and fans after debuting the new Tortured Poets Department set in Paris earlier this month. “To my crew, fellow performers and band who worked tirelessly in their break to concoct this surprise for you — but mostly for the fans in Paris,” she wrote via Instagram on May 12. “I’m so thankful that it was you we got to show this to for the first time because you gave us so much excitement, passion and love. I’m SO fired up to play this for every crowd on the tour.”

Swift subsequently headed to Sweden for three shows in Stockholm from Friday, May 17, to Sunday, May 19. “Stockholm!!!! Thank you for being the most generous, excitable, magical crowds, and for breaking the all-time attendance record for the stadium all three nights,” she gushed via Instagram on Monday, May 20. “Can’t believe this was our first time playing in Sweden — but it won’t be our last … 🇸🇪 🥰.”

After completing her run in Portugal, Swift will continue the European leg of her tour in Madrid on Wednesday, May 29. She will travel throughout the continent over the summer, concluding in London in August. Swift will then enjoy a brief hiatus before a handful of dates in the U.S. in the fall. She will finish out the tour in Canada in December.

Meet Martin Laird: Personal Life, Career & Other Details About the PGA Tour Golfer Explored

M artin Laird"”The Scottish professional golfer has finally made it to the headlines once again after his win at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in 2020. As the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge concluded, Laird was able to secure a T2 position with an impressive -4, one stroke away from Charley Hoffman, who is No. 1 on the leaderboard.

On December 29, 1982, Martin Liard was born in Glasgow, Scotland. The Scottish pro could have joined the "Lefty" club, as he started to play golf with his left hand but later switched sides. Growing up, the Great White Shark"”Greg Norman"”was one of his golf idols but nobody compared to his dad. Tiger Woods is another golfer whom Liard admires. Back in 2011, the 41-year-old made his Masters debut; he even shared his experience of playing alongside the 15-time major champion and stated, " That was my first Masters and it could not have got any better playing alongside Tiger in the final round and for him to go out and play the way he played and to end the front nine sharing the lead. I can still remember every shot we both hit in that round,"

Apart from his love for the gentleman's game, the PGA Tour pro has a varied range of passions, from unwinding and relaxing by playing musical instruments to diving into a good book pretty often. During his days as a junior golfer, the Scotsman first played at Kirkintilloch Golf Club and later shifted to Hilton Park Golf to pursue his golf endeavors. Before turning pro, Laird moved to the United States to take up a golf scholarship at Colorado State University.

Martin Laird is quite a patriot and is known to wear the flag of his home country on his golf belt, golf bag, and golf bag. The Glasgow native also has a charitable side to himself. Liard truly believes in the power of golf, is an active ambassador for Scotland's junior golf development program known as ClubGolf, and helps them introduce golf to every Scottish child by age 9.

How has Martin Laird's golf career been so far?

Martin Laird played for Colorado State University under head coach Jamie Bermel. After turning pro in 2004, he won his second professional tournament, the Denver Open. In 2007, he played on the Nationwide Tour and won the Athens Regional Foundation Classic in April. 2007 marked a significant year in his career as he qualified for the first major, the US Open, but failed to make the cut.

Laird's rookie year on the PGA Tour was 2008. Since then, he has only won four events on the American circuit: the 2009"“10 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, the 2010 Barclays, and the 2020 Shriners! Last year, he came very close to a fifth win at the 3M Open in July but tied for the runner-up position. The four-time PGA Tour winner had a shaky start to his 2024 campaign. So far, he has played in 12 events and has missed five cuts. However, in the 7 cuts he has made, Liard found himself in the top 10 twice: T9 at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches and T10 in the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.

Taylor Swift performs 'Max Martin Medley' in Sweden on final night of Stockholm Eras Tour: Watch

made in tour

STOCKHOLM — Taylor Swift dedicated her acoustic, guitar mash-up on Sunday to Max Martin , a Swedish record producer and songwriter.

"Max is actually here tonight, but he's a shy genius so I'm not going to bring him out onstage but I am going to what I am calling the 'Max Martin Medley,' " she said on her final night performing the Eras Tour in Sweden, Stockholm.

On the guitar, Swift mashed up "Message In A Bottle" from "Red (Taylor's Version)" — the first song she worked on with Martin — with "How You Get The Girl" and "New Romantics" from "1989 (Taylor's Version)."

The wristbands in Friends Arena lit bright red and then turquoise as fans cheered for the five-minute plus acoustic song.

She incorporated "Tortured Poets" tracks into her set list when the Eras Tour kicked off its European leg in Paris earlier this month and made other changes to the show , as well. The tour landed Friday at Friends Arena in Stockholm, which changed its name to "Swiftholm" temporarily.

Fans did not spot Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, in Sweden after the tight end went to her  final show in Paris,  her 87th Eras Tour performance (his Kansas City Chiefs number is 87). The football player hosted a music festival,  Kelce Jam , on Saturday night in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Stubhub.com showed floor seats in Stockholm on sale for $100-$170, with some stadium seats for only $60. Resales for the three American shows are anywhere from four to five digits to see the show.

Swift's next stop will be Lisbon, Portugal.

Michael Block explains why he uses a 2001 Odyssey 2-ball putter covered in lead tape

Change Text Size

GolfWRX.com

The switch was especially significant for Block because it meant that he finally changed out of irons that he was playing for over a decade.

Still squarely in his bag, however, is an even older club that came out in 2001. Block still uses an original Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball putter, which first hit the retail market 23 years ago.

Block’s Odyssey White Hot 2-ball is unique for two main reasons:

1. It has a sharpie-drawn line on the crown for an added alignment feature.

2. It’s covered in lead tape, both on the sole of the club and in the putter’s channel between the crown and the sole.

On Tuesday at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, PGATOUR.com caught up with Block to talk equipment, where he revealed why he uses so much lead tape on his classic putter.

“The lead tape on the putter, I’ve done this with all my putters,” Block said. “I really feel like most putters when they come out of a store, they’re very, very light. I like to have good tempo in my putting stroke, and I feel when I can really feel the weight in the head my tempo…has a lot more flow to it. I don’t rush my backstroke. When I do that, I tend to putt a little better. It’s all because of feel, and slowing down my tempo with the putter.”

Adding lead tape to his putter helps achieve a heavier overall weight, and a heavier swing weight, too.

Michael Block still uses an original Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball putter, which first hit the retail market 23 years ago. (Courtesy GolfWRX)

For amateurs, this is a trick that’s easy to try for yourself, and it will only cost you about $8-15 for a roll of lead tape at your nearest sporting goods store.

In general, heavier putter heads can feel slightly more stable, or smoother, than lighter putter heads throughout the stroke because they require less manipulation, or force, to achieve the intended speed of the putt. Heavier putter heads require less energy to be applied throughout the putting stroke, which can effectively slow down the tempo and the hands, as Block spoke about on Tuesday.

A common rule of thumb used in the equipment world is that heavier putter heads are effective for controlling speed on fast greens, whereas lighter putter heads are better to use on slower putting greens, where a faster-paced stroke tempo can be beneficial. Tiger Woods , for example, tends to add lead tape to his putter on slower greens, and take it off when he plays faster greens.

The best way to find out what putter weight is right for you is to simply try out different weights. With your current putter and a roll of lead tape handy, try hitting putts where you progressively add more lead tape to the head, until the feel matches your preference. The great thing about lead tape is that you can always remove it if you’ve gone too far.

Maybe for you it’s not necessary to add any lead tape, or maybe, like Block, you find it best to add a whole heap of the substance. It’s all about finding that right feel on the greens.

Someone asked Jennifer Lopez about those Ben Affleck divorce rumors. It got awkward fast

One bold reporter confronted Jennifer Lopez about rumors that she and Ben Affleck are splitting up after two years of marriage. They didn’t get their scoop.

Instead, Lopez chided the reporter for the question, according to video published by TMZ . On Wednesday, Lopez appeared on a panel in Mexico City to discuss her new sci-fi Netflix film “Atlas” with co-star Simu Liu and director Brad Peyton. When the panel opened up for audience questions, one journalist off-camera took the opportunity to ask the singer-actor-producer, “Is your divorce with Ben Affleck ... real?”

Some attendees groaned at the question, as Liu quickly jumped in with, “OK, we’re not doing that.” Lopez initially scoffed at the inquiry, then addressed the reporter directly.

“You know better than that,” she said, leaning forward in her seat.

Jennifer Lopez’s ‘This Is Me...Now: A Love Story’ is a companion movie to her album, which drops Friday. The film charts her journey as a hopeless romantic.

“Come on, don’t come in here with that energy, please. Thank you so much,” Liu added.

Speculation about a Bennifer divorce surfaced earlier this month as several tabloids, citing unnamed sources, reported that the celebrity spouses were facing marital issues . Also fueling the rumors were Affleck’s absence from the 2024 Met Gala, where Lopez was a co-chair, and the “Let’s Get Loud” singer’s house-hunting outing with a longtime collaborator. Amid the rumors, TMZ published photos of Affleck and Lopez both still wearing their wedding rings.

Representatives for Lopez and Affleck did not respond immediately Thursday to The Times’ separate requests for comment.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck secure $60M mansion a month before wedding anniversary

Bennifer has finally settled on a mansion to call their own. Lovebirds Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck purchased a $60M home in Beverly Hills.

June 2, 2023

Lopez and Affleck were previously betrothed in the early aughts but famously called off their engagement . In 2021, the duo rekindled their romance, then got married in 2022 . Since then, Lopez has tapped into her love life for the over-the-top rollout of her album “This Is Me ... Now,” a spiritual successor to her 2002 release, “This Is Me ... Then.”

Lopez’s “This Is Me ... Now” era also touts a self-funded musical movie, a documentary about making that movie and a tour that will kick off in Orlando, Fla., on June 26. She will play Southern California in July.

In February, Lopez spoke about the support she received from her husband about her abstract “This Is Me ... Now: A Love Story” movie, in which she personally invested $20 million.

Jennifer Lopez won’t officially launch her This Is Me...Now tour until the summer, but the singer’s lineup of shows has already undergone multiple scheduling changes.

March 14, 2024

“He said, ‘You made a movie. For you. You made a great movie. You did it,’” Lopez told Variety . “Honestly, I don’t care what happens now. That is the biggest kind of compliment that I could get.”

Currently Lopez and Affleck are both working on separate films. As the singer promotes “Atlas” and prepares for her upcoming tour, Affleck is reportedly filming the untitled sequel to “The Accountant” in Los Angeles.

Watching cicadas emerge brought me closer to my own species, 'this brood of humans'

A science reporter shares a rare moment of awe surrounded by strangers gathered to experience the natural phenomenon that occurs every 221 years..

A white cicada on a tree stitched with a photo of Lulu Miller, wearing a striped shirt with cicadas crawling up her arm.

A recent tour of cicadas emerging in Skokie gave Lulu Miller and other participants a chance to learn about the insects up close.

Rebecca Fyffe, Lulu Miller

made in tour

The double brood emergence has begun. Some call it “cicada-geddon,” but Rebecca Fyffe thinks of it as “cicada totality” — a rare nature event worthy of awe.

On Sunday night I experienced a kind of rapture when I attended a cicada emergence tour led by Fyffe, an urban ecology expert.

The tour was free and open to the public and had a slightly renegade, flash mob feel. Despite only 10 people who had RSVP-ed to the event, by 8 p.m. at the meeting point at Lorel Park in Skokie, over 50 people had materialized with flashlights and cameras. Young, old, families, friends, solo enthusiasts like myself who had exhausted their friend groups by talking about cicadas. A giddy vibe filled the air. A delightful range of cicada T-shirts were on display.

We were here to witness something that hadn’t happened in over 200 years: the emergence of the 17-year and 13-year cicadas at the same time. At this very moment, Fyffe explained, the 17-year variety was just beginning to crawl out of the dirt. And over the next couple of hours, each one would undergo a dramatic change before our eyes.

As dusk melted quickly to blackness, Fyffe, wearing a cicada shirt designed in the fashion of a tarot card, led us to a street corner where every tree and telephone pole was boiling with hundreds of cicadas. She reassured us that our flashlights would not frighten them, that our touch would not harm them.

As she shared her expertise on cicadas, she spoke calmly but with glee, expounding on the ecological benefits of the emergence, like how cicadas’ husks are a kind of fertilizer to the forest. And how a year after a major cicada emergence, trees have been found to be healthier, producing more fruit and flowers (possibly due to the females sawing into outer branches as they lay their eggs).

A cicada emerges, upside down from a branch, with a nearly full moon behind it.

A cicada emerges, upside down from a branch, with a nearly full moon behind it.

Lulu Miller

She taught us what the three colors of cicadas meant: The brown ones were nymphs, freshly emerged from the dirt. The white ones were freshly hatched softees (or “teneral adults” as the scientists call them) that had just climbed out of their nymph shell. They looked like they’d been designed by a ’70s stage designer for a horror production on just a hint of acid. And the black ones were adults. We learned that it only takes 90 minutes for them to turn from white to black. I lost myself in looking. The brown ones showed their secret relation to shrimp and lobsters. The black ones were my favorite. I picked them up in my hands, let them nudge through my fingers like puppies. I lifted them higher into the tree to help them on their climb.

I saw a cicada emerging, upside down from a branch, with a nearly full moon behind it. It felt like I was seeing Dracula, or a bat, or something witchy and forbidden and almost fictional.

Kids were lifted onto shoulders to get a better look. I heard an older woman whisper to a stranger that her husband had died just 10 days ago, and she was out “just to immerse ... in something.”

I am a nature lover; I thought I had come to lose myself in this once-in-a-lifetime natural phenomenon. But what kept me there, on that random street corner in Skokie until 9:30 p.m. were the humans.

All these humans out here: little kids just beginning their lives, their parents blowing their bedtimes because it was worth it, college kids letting the veneer of cool melt away for a bit, older souls, hearts wracked with grief, still able to become rapt by the outside world. I wanted to be near this energy. The emergence of this brood of humans. I felt proud, for a rare moment, to be a part of our species. I came home itchy and vowing to blow my sons’ bedtime the next night, so they could be a part of it too.

A group of people look at a tree and at the grass around it for cicadas.

For more information on the cicada emergence tours, go to Landmark Pest Management’s Facebook page for tour announcements. The next tour is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Final leaderboard :

What to know from Xander Schauffele's PGA Championship win

By drilling a clutch 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole, Schauffele held off Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke to win his first career major championship. Schauffele’s score of 21-under-par is the lowest in men’s major history, and his 25 birdies tie the most ever by a player in a PGA Championship. Schauffele is the first player in history to make 25 or more birdies in multiple majors in his career, having done so previously at the 2019 Masters.

Wild to think a year ago this week at Oak Hill was basically the debut of this latest iteration of Bryson DeChambeau . Slimmed down. Talking about losing 18 pounds in 24 days — all water weight. A new caddie — one who had left the business to pursue other ventures.

I remember talking to Greg Bodine that week and him speaking about DeChambeau's evolution, most interestingly that he could now "dial it back and still swing his driver 10 miles per hour faster than he ever did five or six years ago".

It was the notion that DeChambeau was coming to combine both his original talent and his massive size/strength gains to find a happy medium. Now here we are.

DeChambeau: 'I didn’t take care of it earlier in the week'

DeChambeau: 'I didn’t take care of it earlier in the week'

You can hear the sense of regret in Bryson DeChambeau 's words. Here's what he had to say, speaking to Sky Sports after missing out on a PGA Championship playoff:

💬 “I didn’t have my best ball-striking week. I wasn’t too comfortable. So I have a little bit to work on there. But I’m proud of the way I fought today. My birdie on the 10th ignited the fire and I showed resilience.

“I thought the (number) might be good enough. Weird stuff can happen on the 18th. But I didn’t take care of it earlier in the week.

“I’m happy with my week but I want to win.”

Xander Schauffele wins PGA Championship for first career major victory

Xander Schauffele wins PGA Championship for first career major victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Xander Schauffele can finally remove the albatross from around his neck. Schauffele, golf’s beacon of unrewarded consistency, won the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on Sunday for his first career major victory.

He did it in one of the more memorable ways possible, sinking a six-foot birdie putt on 18 with the entirety of the crowd watching. After watching the ball circle the hole before finally dropping in to get Schauffele to 21-under-par, one stroke ahead of Bryson DeChambeau, he threw both arms into the air and let out perhaps the biggest smile of his career.

Starting the day in a loaded and crowded leaderboard full of top players, Schauffele shared the lead with Collin Morikawa, only adding more pressure to end his major woes. Schauffele failed to win starting in three final groups already this spring. Twenty times he’d finished in the top 20 of a major without a win. Each impressive week was also just another bitter-sweet reminder of not being good enough to win the trophy at the end.

But in a low-scoring week, Schauffele opened with a major-record 62 and finished with a 65 to properly establish himself as one of golf’s best players. He led or co-led after every round.

Read more here.

Schauffele felt the emotion with his winning putt

Xander Schauffele gets the microphone following his Wanamaker Trophy presentation, and his smile is dominating his face.

Here's what he said to CBS after getting his hands on the silverware:

💬 “I was kind of emotional after the putt lipped in. It’s been a while since I won and really, I just kept saying I needed to stay in my lane. That was hard all day but I stayed focused. I had some weird breaks coming into the house but we’re here now.

“I would be less of a patient person if that putt didn’t lip in! I didn’t want to go into a playoff with Bryson. We would probably have played 18!

“My Mum is back at home in San Diego and my Dad is in Hawaii. I just spoke to him. I had to hang-up pretty quickly because he was starting to make me cry. He was sat on the phone bawling. Everyone I have here makes me feel pretty special. I was pleased to do this for my team.”

Obviously no-one things of anyone other than the winner at this point. But it's hard not to feel for Bryson DeChambeau for a moment.

The adrenaline of his birdie on 18, the minutes of practicing for a playoff or victory that might come... And then doesn't.

Still, this is Xander Schauffele's moment, and he is about to get his hands on the Wanamaker Trophy.

Schauffele matches his best when it mattered

Schauffele matches his best when it mattered

Xander Schauffele ’s final-round 65 matches the lowest of his major championship career.

He twice closed with 65 at the 2021 Open and 2017 Open, but in both came from way down the board to finish T26 and T20.

Today, he made it count.

That's for the doubters

That's for the doubters

I must admit, I wasn't sure that putt was going to drop. But it did.

In fairness, a lot of people weren't sure Xander Schauffele were going to see today out either. But he did.

That record-equalling 62 on Thursday proved to be just the start. What a PGA Championship and what a first major for the 30-year-old.

Get to know Xander Schauffele

Get to know Xander Schauffele

Want to get a feel for Xander Schauffele's makeup? How he approaches his place in the game? During a long chat at the Presidents Cup last year , he was asked about why he seems to hold back so much publicly.

“I feel prone to hermit because it’s easier to just focus on the golf,” Schauffele said. “It’s a safe space — hermitting is a safe space. Golf is such a weird game, you know? It’s so slow. Quiet. Non-contact. It makes it so much easier to not go scorched earth. If I just said, screw it, and said what I wanted all the time? No. As soon as you put yourself out there, let the bad things in, getting your mind going somewhere else, it’ll tear you apart. You’ve seen it happen to golfers.

“Instead, I just go at what I see as the agreeable rout,” he continued. “Just sort of agree with everything being said by other top players. Go along. Everyone falls into categories and I just try to stay on my little peninsula.”

Something to consider as it comes down to the 18th

Something to consider as it comes down to the 18th

As Xander Schauffele walks up the 18th fairway needing a birdie to win and a par to force a playoff with Bryson DeChambeau, consider that the par-5 hole is playing as the easiest hole on the course today (4.554 average score).

There have been two eagles, 40 birdies, 23 pars, eight bogeys and one "other."

Schauffele will have the putt to win it

Schauffele will have the putt to win it

That's a wonderful chip and run from Schauffle, which checks up short of the hole and leaves a tempter for the birdie that wins the championship.

DeChambeau returns to his playoff practice. Just in case.

Schauffle setting up a major-winning finish

Schauffle setting up a major-winning finish

Here we go. Schauffele is down in two at the par-five 18th after a super second shot.

Surely there's a PGA-winning birdie on the cards here...

Theegala holes out in style

T12: Sahith THEEGALA (-12) 73

It's not been the day Theegala was hoping for, but rolling in a 20-footer on 18 for a birdie may well add a bit of good feeling as he heads home.

Shane Lowry (-14) also wraps up on 18. He does it with a par to finish with 70 and tied-fifth for the championship.

Bryson out to prepare

Off to the practice range heads Bryson DeChambeau , as he waits to hear about what Xander Schauffele manages on the 18th.

A second major, a last-gasp defeat or a playoff... It's all possible from here.

More than anything, DeChambeau will be hoping to settle a bit after the adrenaline of his birdie on 18 moments ago.

Hovland's bogey ends streak

Hovland's bogey ends streak

Viktor Hovland went the entire weekend without a bogey, then took a six on the par-5 18th on Sunday.

As if the 16th at Oak Hill wasn't tough enough to stomach — leaving his approach in the fairway bunker in a one-on-one matchup versus Brooks Koepka — this will sit even worse.

Consider: He very well could've become only the third major champion over the last 30 years to go bogey-free over the final two rounds. Instead, it's more regret.

Chef Fadi Kattan is well aware that it might not be the right time to release a cookbook about Palestinian food – not when people in Gaza are starving .

"But you know my publisher is of Jewish faith," he told Morning Edition host Leila Fadel. "She said, now the book even has more significance."

That's because his book – Bethlehem: A Celebration of Palestinian Food  – is dedicated to preserving part of a culture that's been torn apart by decades of displacement and war. It's a love letter through food to his childhood home in the West Bank.

"I started food tours in Bethlehem, and I would take people along with me to the markets," he said. "In the book, I really wanted to be able to transmit this to people and say, look, you're actually coming on a visit of Bethlehem with me through the recipes."

The dishes are reflective of the diversity of Palestinians in Bethlehem and beyond, from a simple fig salad with olive oil and sumac – to the spiced rice and fish favorite sayadieh samak – to a Christmas fruitcake. With the crisis in Gaza, Kattan implores, "Time is running out. We need to preserve those recipes. We need to share them with people."

LENTIL SOUP

"My mother cooks shorbat adas , a lentil soup, for us as soon as the wind gets chilly in Bethlehem, and often in the days of Lent. Widely regarded as the healthy option to many a fast and as a food of the less fortunate, shorbat adas is in reality the noblest of soups, with its rituals of fresh accompaniments: Palestinian finely chopped salad, radishes, spring onions, and fried bread."

380 g / 13 ounces red lentils

4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 onions, finely chopped

Fadi Kattan's lentil soup

Fadi Kattan's lentil soup

3 garlic cloves, crushed

2 teaspoons ground turmeric

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon ground ginger 500 ml / 2⅛ cups chicken stock or water

Juice of 2 lemons

2 flatbreads, such as pita, kmaj, or shrak

Green Shatta

Combine the lentils with cold water to cover in a bowl.

In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sauté for 2 minutes. Add the garlic, turmeric, cumin, and ginger and continue to sauté until the onions become translucent, another 3 minutes.

Drain the lentils and add to the pot. Cover with the stock and decrease the heat to medium. Cover and cook for 20 minutes, until the lentils are soft.

Add the lemon juice and blend with a handheld blender until creamy.

In a small pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Cut the bread into strips and briefly fry in the hot oil, until lightly browned and crisp.

Serve the soup with fried bread on top and a dash of shatta.

How Billie Eilish fell back in love with music making new album Hit Me Hard and Soft

Billie Eilish hit me hard and soft header

She's a record-breaking, award-hoovering, pop culture phenomenon. But somewhere along the way, Billie Eilish fell out of love with music.

At just 22, the Los Angeles superstar has already experienced more than most musicians do their entire career — subject to intense levels of adoration and scrutiny while growing up in the public eye.

At 17, her 2019 album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? , crafted in her brother's childhood bedroom, made history atop triple j's Hottest 100 and at the Grammys .

That meteoric rise was captured in 2021 documentary The World's A Little Blurry,  which showed (sometimes uncomfortably) how the sudden impact of global fame affected Eilish physically, mentally and emotionally.

Her second album, ironically titled Happier Than Ever , further cemented her cultural dominance, even as it raised compelling questions about achieving that kind of ubiquity.

Her complex relationship with music and celebrity was distilled into a revealing 'careful what you wish for' chorus.

"Things I once enjoyed / Just keep [me] employed now", she sang on album opener 'Growing Older'.

"I used to really not enjoy making music and I still have trouble with it," Eilish admits to Lucy Smith on triple j Mornings.

"I forgot that I started making music because I loved it. And then it became my job so quickly when I was so young that I kind of didn't get to enjoy it as much."

However, on the release day of Hit Me Hard and Soft, her hugely anticipated third album , Eilish says, "I think that I've come back to enjoying it and that's been really nice."

The 10-track release finds Eilish returning to the darker, theatrical tone of her debut album, but with a new-found confidence and studio mastery that looks toward fresh sonic horizons.

There are surprising settings we've never heard Eilish in before: a string quartet, 80s pop-rock, 'indie sleaze'-era electronica and late 90s club heaters.

As with everything Eilish records, Hit Me Hard and Soft was produced and co-written with her brother, Finneas O'Connell. However she had  a greater role than usual in its cinematic, adventurous production.

"I was more involved in this album than anything we've made. And I think that came from pure enjoyment. Like, I wanted to," she says.

That includes continuing to comp her own vocals — the editing process of splicing together various vocal takes to assemble the perfect take.

"The greatest thing I've ever learned to do," Eilish declares. "I'm never not grateful that I do that … all my vocals, and my little synths."

"I engineer a lot of my own stuff … and then Finneas comes in and does the rest better than me."

Hitting the club and the gym

Among Hit Me Hard and Soft's biggest surprises are moments where Billie takes us to the club.

The big synths illuminating 'Bittersuite' for instance, or 'Chihiro', which is powered by bass-heavy funk, snapping beats and laser-lit synths.

"We really didn't even mean to do that, it just came naturally," Eilish says.

"There's like a lot of small moments on the album that we didn't really mean to do honestly."

Case in point: a segue that arrives with a sweaty, dancefloor sheen in the second half of the jazzy 'L'Amour De Ma Vie'.

"This little breakdown track called 'Over Now'," Eilish explains. "That was me and Finneas just messing around, making the kind of thing that we were like, 'No one's every going to hear this'."

"Finneas [and I] had this realisation: The coolest, bravest thing we could do is just put it out exactly how we made it. It's about 'Do we enjoy this and do we like this?'"

With its pitch-shifted vocals and throbbing up-tempo pulse, 'Over Now' evokes chart-friendly trance music from the late '90s and early 2000s. But rather than being targeted to the dancefloor, Eilish revealed the music was designed for her personal fitness playlist.

"I was at the gym all the time in this period. I was doing a lot of cardio," she says.

"There weren't a lot of songs that were right for running and jumping rope [to] that I liked enough that had the right BPM [beats per minute]," she explains.

"I found one that I loved so much and remember being like, 'Wow, I wish there was some sort of way I could put this in an AI program and make 800 songs that make me feel the way this song makes me feel'.

"It's just fun and dance-y and clubby'."

It also reconnected Eilish with an old, little-known hobby of hers: DJing.

At around 15, her brother gave her some DJ software.

"I got so good at it … I would remix everything [and] I was doing it literally all day, every single day," she says.

But then she lapsed (global stardom can be distracting) only to pick it up again recently thanks to Finneas' circle of talented DJ friends.

As part of their DJ mentorship, the siblings were also enjoying going to various parties and clubs.

"I've been starting to go out into the world for the first time since I was young and just biting the bullet and just going outside," she says.

"Just letting myself be, and trying not to be anxious and terrified the entire time like I have been for years."

Making music for herself

Given her immense popularity and Gen Z idol status, Hit Me Hard and Soft already feels like a guaranteed blockbuster, destined for glowing reviews, epic streaming figures, and screaming fans packing venues around the world.

All 12 East Coast shows on Eilish's upcoming Australian tour sold out almost immediately, despite cost-of-living pressures and fans only getting a few days' notice between its announcement and tickets going on sale.

The pressure of those weighty expectations initially hung heavy on Eilish's head when beginning her new record.

"I remember just being like, 'I don't know what people want me to make, and I don't know what I'm going to make [or] what people are going to think!' I just was very in my head about it," she says.

A conversation with a friend provided an epiphany. "I remember them being like, 'Billie, just make what you want to make. Don't worry about what they want you to make'," she says.

"I was like, 'Oh, yeah, right. That's so true!' That really made me think of it differently: the only person that needs to enjoy this is me. And that's all I need."

With the pressure off, that liberating sense of artistic freedom informed the work.

"It allows you to feel more free to just do what naturally comes to you instead of what you think is going to be received well, or be successful, or being number one or whatever."

It also informed Eilish's decision that there'd be no singles for Hit Me Hard and Soft, a 180 pivot from the multiple advance singles that preceded her first two albums.

"Not doing singles, I wanna give it to you all at once," she declared on Instagram  pre-release.

It is a power move that not only underscores Eilish's superstardom — big enough she doesn't need to follow the industry standard of carefully-orchestrated album rollouts  — but that pushes back on the way her young target demographic typically experience music, as individual songs or clipped-up hooks and 'moments' on TikTok.

Addressing the haters

Beyond levelling up her songwriting and sonic variety, Eilish's third album is a showcase for her most powerful instrument: her voice.

Hit Me Hard and Soft showcases her expressive singing techniques, such as the exhale/inhale that becomes rhythmic punctuation on 'Lunch', and impressive range.

She's capable of rising from delicate phrasing to soaring falsetto, or a commanding, full-throated presence, spanning it all on 'The Greatest'.

The record begins with the hushed vocals of 'Skinny', which feels like a loungey companion piece to 'What Was I Made For?' — the poignant, breathy ballad written for the Barbie soundtrack that won the 2023 Song of the Year Grammy Award and made Eilish and Finneas the youngest-ever two-time Oscar winners.

Asked if there's a particular vocal inflection or moment on the album she's most proud of, Eilish points to 'L'Amour De Ma Vie' as a favourite.

"It's the jazziest song on the album, and any time I get to sing in the realm of jazz, I am so happy," she says.

"I really feel like I was born to be a jazz singer and almost like [born in] the wrong generation in a way."

Eilish grew up with a dyed-in-the-wool love for classic, old-school crooners who never had the luxury of digital tweaks, relying on the raw prowess of their pipes to convey a feeling or capture listeners' attention.

"Frank Sinatra is my favourite in the world, and Johnny Mathis and Peggy Lee and Julie London and Etta James and Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald," she says.

"It's so funny because I grew up with people talking about how soft and delicate voices are not as good as big, loud powerhouses. And that's just not true."

"All voices are beautiful. There's different kinds."

If one detected a defensive tone, it's because Eilish is used to facing criticism — 'Billie Eilish only whispers' allegations — of her understated singing throughout her career.

The 22-year-old is comfortable clapping back at critics, ranging from the way she dresses and queerbaiting claims, to clarifying her stance on "wasteful" vinyl variants against Swifties. Addressing criticisms of her singing is no exception.

"I really grew up thinking I was a bad singer because I didn't belt and because I didn't use my voice like that," she says.

"But when I think about it and I look back, all the singers that I adored had deeply precise, beautiful, delicate control over their voices. And that's what I always gravitated towards. And I think that 'L'amour [De Ma Vie]' is a really great vocal.

"When you listen to that compared to something from my first EP , Don't Smile at Me, it's a completely different person. It's amazing."

Hit Me Hard and Soft is out now.
