Nickel Creek Perform Saturday Interstate Headline Set at The Long Road Festival 2023
By Ross Jones

Walking into the Interstate Stage Tent on Saturday night of The Long Road Festival 2023, you'd be greeted by darkness.
Such darkness can only be perturbed by light, and such light tonight could only be generated by Nickel Creek; one of, if not the , most creative yet approachable groups around.
In an hour and 15 minutes, they provide the set of the weekend so far - a career-spanning performance that confounds the standard tradition of bluegrass by encompassing the emotional crux of pop sensibility for something bold, unnervingly effortless and wholly enrapturing.
It feels obscenely understated to say that the group rip on their respective instruments - not at all in a showy nature, but for celebratory and joyous purposes, as a gift to those in attendance. Straight from the frenetic Celebrants cut, 'Where the Long Line Leads', they produce something catchy and danceable - each of the trio taking a turn to deliver a creative and expansive solo within a playful five-minute cut.
Just as you think you are slinking into something jaunty and wholesome, the trio will whirl up something melodically expansive as 'Going Out...'. Vocally controlled by harmonic "ahhs", both band and crowd lose themselves in the theatrical narrative, driven on a suspenseful journey that would be positively disturbed by the spoken word.
Before long, it's the crowd's turn to participate, offering the rhythmic handclaps for the confounding reverie of their recent title track, 'Celebrants'. The trio are appreciative, frequently each taking a turn at the front of the stage to offer an equally eclipsing solo that never loses sight of its intention - to gratify in its escapism.
It's a rollercoaster when watching Nickel Creek - their songs can be expansive yet pass by in the blink of an eye, their enigmatic harmonies blessing songs that can be both super candid and vulnerable while also built around a sprawling story.
The fact they can pull off a sweeping narrative like 'The Lighthouse's Tale' and have the whole crowd either with their jaws on the floor or singing along with utmost devotion is telling of their capability in both songwriting and performing.
"It's such a beautiful vibe with that wood smoke in the air", Shaun Watkins proclaims before 'Strangers', as the smell of embers penetrates the air throughout the tent. It's both tangible and fitting... the earthy and all-encompassing smell making you feel all the more present for each new turn the group take.
"It's fun as hell camping with you this weekend!" Chris Thile declares, both the unofficial conductor and most excitable of three seemingly very content musicians. They spontaneously joke with the crowd and each other throughout the set; "You guys should look into some sheep and cows around here", Sean Watkins observes, jokingly taking in the unfamiliar greenery of the English countryside.
"Thank you for rolling with this madness", Thile offers to the - by this point capacity - crowd, as they close out with their beguiling 2000 cut, 'The Fox'. "It's a cautionary tale about owning livestock", he adds nonchalantly, before they deliver us one last final piece to leave aghast with.
It's been a busy 2023 for the immensely popular trio. They released their seventh studio album, Celebrants , in March, before heading out on a wide-reaching International and US Tour.
The band are continuing their 2023 UK tour following The Long Road Festival, playing Towersey Festival in Buckingham, before pulling up for headline shows in Manchester, Dublin and London, where they are performing at the famous Barbican theatre.
The group are also set to host a three-night residency at the Ryman Auditorium in September, with special guests including Aoife O'Donovan and Hawktail.
The band close out their 2023 touring schedule in October, headlining The Moody Theater in Austin, TX on October 21st with Monica Martin in support.

Live Review: Nickel Creek + Lau Noah, Union Chapel, London, 27th January 2023
The first sign of the wild enthusiasm that greeted Nickel Creek’s first UK show in 20 years was the queue outside the Union Chapel as the temperature plunged towards 2 degrees Celsius on a dark January evening. At 6.30pm when the doors opened – a full hour before showtime – this line of ticket-holders stretched more than 150 metres along Compton Terrace and almost to the end of the road. One of the few drawbacks of this wonderful building as a music venue is the lack of numbered seating. If you want to be near the front at a popular show, you have to arrive madly early. The downstairs pews were almost full by the time we got inside, so we went upstairs and had a great view from the front row of the balcony.
The next sign of how much Nickel Creek have been missed was the wave of a-cheerin’ and a-whoopin’ and a-hollerin’ as they mounted the Union Chapel stage for the first time since October 16, 2002 (I was there then, too). Their grins of surprise and delight at such a rapturous welcome stayed in place for the whole night. As lead singer and mandolin player Chris Thile pointed out later, this was “our first proper show in four years” and they could not have wished for a better reception.
Nickel Creek, who first got together as child bluegrass prodigies in 1989, have taken several long breaks since their purple patch from 2000 to 2006. Chris Thile has run a parallel career with the Punch Brothers while playing and recording with everyone from Dolly Parton and Jack White to cellist Yo Yo Ma. Fiddle player Sara Watkins and her guitarist brother Sean also keep busy with side and solo projects, together and apart. These include a fabulous 2021 album by Sara called ‘ Under The Pepper Tree’ , which is aimed at families and children.
But now the old gang is back together and in March they release ‘ The Celebrants ’, the first Nickel Creek studio album since 2014. Friday’s audience heard the first live performance of the title track, along with current single ‘ Strangers ’.
I have only vague memories of their 2002 concert, but it was clear that the assured and confident forty-somethings who burst on to the stage had benefited from the two decades of experience in between. Chris and Sara put their whole bodies into performing – jumping and stamping and bouncing on the boards while playing intricate instrumental runs, then zooming back to their mics to sing pitch-perfect harmonies. Alongside touring bass player Jeff Picker, Sean Watkins is the calm centre of this musical storm, anchoring the sound with his 1940s Gibson LG (a gift from Jackson Browne).
They kicked off with ‘’ When In Rome’ ’, the opener from their 2005 album ‘Why Should The Fire Die ’, and in a set that lasted just short of two hours they played 24 numbers, mostly sticking to the three-album series that began in 2000 with their Alison Krauss produced breakthrough. Another two new songs also featured, and it sounds like the forthcoming album will favour more complex vocal harmonies along with an almost classical feel in places. The moments when Jeff played bowed bass under Sara’s expressive fiddle lines were the most musically delicious of the evening.
The main set finished with long-time audience favourite ‘ The Fox ’, then after a short but deafening bout of clapping, cheering and stamping they came back for two more numbers, finishing the show unamplified at the front of the stage with the beautiful ballad ‘ When You Come Back Down ’.
If there’s any doubt as to how much we loved this show at the Union Chapel, the first thing I did the next morning was to book tickets for their next UK concert, which had just been announced. This will be at the much larger Barbican Hall on September 1st.
The support artist was singer-songwriter Lau Noah. I hadn’t checked her out in advance and was pleasantly surprised by the originality of her songs, underpinned by beautifully played guitar in a traditional Spanish style. I’m tempted to reach for the word flamenco here, but purists might dispute that. Born in Catalan Spain and based in New York, she sings in both Spanish and English and I really liked her voice. She has her own London show at Kings Place (Hall Two) on Friday, 10th February.

Nickel Creek Expand 2023 Headlining Tour
Nickel Creek has announced that they have added several additional stops to their expansive 2023 tour. In February, the Grammy-award winning trio shared that they would be hitting the road on April 15, following the release of Celebrants– the band’s fifth studio project and first new album since 2019. The group originally planned to wrap their U.S run on June 17, after a sold-out three-hitter at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, Colo. The amended tour schedule will take the band from coast-to-coast, with 22 new dates set throughout July and into October.
The first new show on the roster will take place on July 7, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Ore., and will feature support from singer-songwriter Monica Martin. On July 8, Nickel Creek will head over to Bend, Ore. for a one-night-stand at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. On July 11, the trio will take the stage in Reno, Nev. for a show at the Grand Sierra Resort before heading over to Salt Lake City, Utah for a set on July 12. Beginning on July 19, they will embark on a tight run of newly added dates in Michigan, Ontario, and North Carolina. On July 24, they will play The Coves Amphitheater in Union Hall, Va. and, on July 27, they will head over to Lafayette, N.Y., for a show at the Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards.
The ensemble will pick back up with more new dates on October 6, with an appearance at the Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif. On October 10 and 11, they will take the stage with Hawktail for back-to-back sets at The Theatre At Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Then, they will finish out the month with additional shows in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. They will close out the tour with two nights in the Lone Star State, where they are scheduled to play at Majestic Theatre in Dallas, on October 20 and finishing things off at the Moody Amphitheatre at Waterloo Park on October 21.
VIP and GA tickets for the newly added tour dates will go on-sale Thursday, March 23, at 10 a.m on the band’s website.

Nickel Creek Stretch Out 2023 Headline Tour
Nickel Creek ‘s 2023 headline tour has been extended with newly confirmed shows in various cities, including Los Angeles, Portland, St. Paul, Denver, Santa Barbara, Dallas, and Austin. This tour marks their first as a group since 2014. The trio, composed of mandolinist Chris Thile , violinist Sara Watkins, and guitarist Sean Watkins, has won a Grammy Award.
This tour comes on the heels of their highly anticipated new album, Celebrants, which is set to release on March 24, 2023, via Thirty Tigers. The album, their fifth studio recording, explores the nuances of human connection, including themes of romance, friendship, and time. Across 18 tracks, Nickel Creek’s lyrics are both poetic and straightforward, as they examine the building, crossing, burning, and rebuilding of bridges. Celebrants was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Valentine and features Mike Elizondo on bass.
In anticipation of the album’s release, Nickel Creek has shared three tracks: “Where The Long Line Leads,” “Holding Pattern,” and “Strangers.”
Reflecting on the project, the band shares, “ This is a record about embracing the friction inherent in real human connection. We begin the record yearning for and pursuing harmonious connection. We end the record having realized that truly harmonious connection can only be achieved through the dissonance that we’ve spent our entire adult lives trying to avoid. ”

In case you didn’t think there was such a thing as progressive acoustic music, Nickel Creek are here to prove otherwise. And in case you don’t think that sounds like a genrre that’s all that viable in commercial terms, consider this, too; the trio’s self-titled album - produced by Alison Krauss - went platinum in the U.S., and they also won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2003. They’d secured a place for themselves as the titans of their genre, but in 2007, they chose to disband so that their individual members could pursue other interests; Sara Watkins, for instance, went on tour with The Decemberists. Earlier this year, though, the three-piece announced that they planned to release a new album, A Dotted Line, at the start of April, followed by a U.S. tour to support it. They’re in the thick of that as we speak, playing with a stripped-down lineup and affording equal representation to each of their albums across the setlists. Their next step is to schedule some European dates, where their fanbase is considerably more niche; if intimate solo shows that Sara Watkins played on these shores during their break are anything to go by, though, there’s certainly an audience for them here.
