These virtual tours include areas that are usually off-limits to the public.

Jessica Poitevien is an international storyteller and regular contributor to Travel + Leisure.

sistine chapel tour video

If you are not able to travel in person for whatever reason, the good news is that museums and attractions around the world are providing virtual tours, allowing you to experience them from the comfort of your couch.

Among the most iconic places offering virtual tours is the Vatican .

Typically millions of travelers visit the Vatican Museums every year. Its many halls are almost always crowded, making it difficult at times to truly admire the intensely detailed frescoes, especially in the Sistine Chapel. However, the Vatican Museums created a variety of impressive virtual tours showcasing several areas around the grounds. Now, you can sit at home and contemplate these historic beauties with easy-to-navigate virtual tours that are also completely free of charge.

There are 26 distinct areas in the Vatican Museums, and thanks to this digital tourism option, virtual visitors have the opportunity to explore sections that are normally off-limits to the public, including the Niccoline Chapel , which features frescoes by Fra Angelico. Raphael's Rooms, created for popes Julius II (1503-13) and Leo X (1513-21), also have 360-degree tours that place you right in the middle of the elegant rooms.

The Vatican Museums also offer photos and videos of other areas where virtual tours have not been made, such as the Gregorian Egyptian Museum , the Jewish Lapidarium , and the Carriage Pavilion .

For a full list of all the virtual tours available, visit the Vatican Museums official website . And once you're done exploring, be sure to check out these 12 museums from around the world that are also offering virtual tours.

Sistine chapel with no waiting line – How to visit it

The Sistine Chapel is certainly one of the best-known artistic treasures in the world. Mainly the Sistine owes its fame to Michelangelo's frescoes that decorate the vault and the apse wall. Consequently this place represents one of the attractions of Rome most visited by tourists.

For this reason it is recommended to organize your visit in the best way to see the Sistine Chapel without queue and without stress. Indeed, millions of tourists flock to the Vatican every year with the sole purpose of seeing Michelangelo's masterpieces that decorates the sacred chapel.

How to visit the Sistine Chapel with no line

The Sistine Chapel is located inside the Vatican Museums . So in order to visit it you need to buy a ticket to the Vatican Museums. As we said, given the large turnout that the museum has, it is recommended to book a skip-the-line ticket for the entrance. Reserve your tickets for Vatican Museum

Musei Vaticani Cappella Sistina

In order to avoid the lines there are many solutions. The first option is to pre-purchase the skip-the-line entrance ticket that allows you to enter the Vatican Museums on the day and time you have chosen. By purchasing the simple entrance ticket, you also have the option of the official audio guide . This latter option permits you to orient better inside the museums and listen to the explanation of the main works on display. The explanation is customizable, so you can freely choose the path you wish most. Our advice is to get organized before entering the Museums having already clear what you want to visit. The Vatican Museums are indeed very large and consist of numerous sections. The paths inside should also be taken into consideration before starting your tour.

The second option is to participate in a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel . It is therefore a visit with an official guide who will accompany you for about 3 hours to admire the main sections of the Vatican Museums and of course the Sistine Chapel. The tour takes place only on Saturdays from April and October and during the public holidays and the Christmas holidays.

Finally, you can also book a tour with a private guide to the Vatican Museums . With this option you will be able to deep the best of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel as you wish. In fact, with this tour you will have at your disposal an official guide dedicated only to you. The visit can last 3 hours. In this case you will visit the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Otherwise there is also a 4-hours tour which, in addition to the Vatican Museums, includes also the guided tour of St. Peter's basilica and the entire monumental complex.

In which times of entrance I can visit the Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 6:00 pm (last admission bookable at 3:00pm). During the summer months, an extraordinary evening opening is also planned until October, but only on Fridays.

On which day is the entrance at the Sistine Chapel free?

As we mention, the Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums. The entrance inside the Vatican Museum is free every last Sunday of the Month from 09:00am to 2:00 pm. This may not happen just if the last Sunday of the month occur with Easter, on the 29th of June, on the 25th and 26th of December. During these religious holidays the Vatican Museum are always closed.

How to reach the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is located at the end of the path of the Vatican Museums. The main entrance of the Vatican Museums is located in Viale Vaticano . The new entrance was built in 2000 and is located to the left of the old main entrance. The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are easily accessible by local means of transport (metro and bus).

Appropriate clothing

The entrance to the Sistine Chapel and in general to the Vatican Museums is allowed only to visitors dressed in a proper way. Armless and / or low-cut clothing, shorts, miniskirts and hats are not allowed.

Medium and large luggage

It is not possible to carry baggage, bags or backpacks inside the Vatican Museums that are not considered suitable by the staff, both in size and in type. Inside the Vatican Museums there is a free wardrobe available to visitors.

Can I take photos inside the Sistine Chapel?

Inside the Sistine Chapel, taking pictures and filming videos with any electronic device is strictly prohibited. Instead, photos and videos are allowed inside the Vatican Museums, the important thing is that they are taken without flashes or professional equipment.

Advices to better admire the Sistine Chapel

pannelli descrittivi cappella sistina

It is not allowed to speak inside the Sistine Chapel. The silence is in fact imposed by the sacredness of the place. In the case of a guided tour, not even the official Vatican guides have the right to explain inside the Sistine Chapel. Along the route of the Vatican Museums, there are panels to describe and explain the various frescoes present . The vault of the Sistine Chapel is very high and therefore it is not possible to see the details of the paintings up close. Therefore, we advise you to look carefully at these panels and read up on what you will be able to admire inside the chapel. In fact the panels, besides having a descriptive part, also report an enlargement of the various representations.

Reductions and free tickets for the Sistine Chapel

Children aged between 6 and 18 are entitled to purchase a reduced ticket. In addition, students under the age of 26 with a Student Card or university booklet are entitled to this reduction. Free admission is reserved for children younger than 5 years, journalists with a card and ICOM members.

Entrance for people with disability

People with a degree of disability greater than 74% can enter the Vatican Museums for free (and therefore in Sistine Chapel) together with an accompanying person. The person must remember to present the certificate to be entitled to free admission.

Different path to visit the Sistine Chapel

As we said, to visit the Sistine Chapel it is necessary to enter the Vatican Museums. Inside the Vatican Museums it is possible to choose between the two paths well signalled along the itinerary.

Therefore if you intend to visit mainly the Sistine Chapel there is a short path that avoids many of the halls of the Vatican Museums. This route starts immediately once you go up the main escalators after the Atrio dei Quattro Cancelli and leads you directly towards the Sistine Chapel walking through the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Geographical Maps and the Pius V Apartment.

Consider that with this path you won’t see many important halls of the museums as the Pio Clementino Museum, which hosts the important statue of the Laocoonte, the Cortile del Belvedere and the Raphael’s Rooms. On the other side, with the longer path you will also see the Greek-roman section and some of the courtyard of the Vatican Museums. Signals are present almost everywhere.

What Pope Francis Said to Mayor Eric Adams in Rome

The meeting was a highlight for the mayor, who is in Rome to speak at a conference about world peace and often talks about how his Christian faith informs his leadership.

Eric Adams looking out over Rome from a balcony.

By Jeffery C. Mays

Reporting from Rome

Mayor Eric Adams, who talks often about his faith, acknowledged on Saturday that he had felt some uncertainty — if not anxiety — about meeting Pope Francis.

But at the Vatican, as Mr. Adams stooped before the pope, he felt any disquiet he had wash away. Pope Francis placed his hand on the mayor’s right arm. Then, the two shook hands.

“I think that some people have a level of aura and energy and the ability to just calm people,” said Mr. Adams, who is Christian but not Catholic. “I think that’s what he possessed. In my prayers, I thank God for having the opportunity this morning.”

The meeting came on the second day of a three-day trip to Italy for Mr. Adams, who said he is trying to better understand the global conflicts that touch New York. The visit came as the mayor, who is up for re-election next year, faces difficulties in New York City, including lagging poll numbers and a federal investigation into his campaign fund-raising.

There was no specific agenda for the meeting between the mayor and the pope, which came as the pope met with participants of a conference about peace. But after the meeting, Mr. Adams said the two spoke about conflicts in Haiti, Africa and the Middle East. They talked about the Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism, a nonprofit created by Robert Kraft, the owner of the N.F.L.’s New England Patriots.

“He responded affirmatively and said: ‘Eric, please pray for me as well,’” the mayor said.

Mr. Adams and the pope took part in the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, a conference organized by the Fratelli Tutti Foundation, which was founded by Pope Francis, that brought Nobel laureates and celebrities to Rome to promote peace.

“War is a deception, as is the idea of international security based on the deterrent of fear,” Pope Francis told people attending the conference, who gathered at the Vatican on Saturday. “Ensuring lasting peace requires a return to a recognition of common humanity and to place fraternity at the center of peoples’ lives.”

Mr. Adams said it was a “sacred moment for me just to have an opportunity to hear from Pope Francis as he leads the world on the most important issues of our time, from the global refugee crisis to climate change, to the journey toward peace.”

The mayor often speaks publicly about how his Christian faith informs the way he governs. He has said he does not believe in the separation of church and state and has described himself as a “prayer warrior.” He has even criticized the removal of prayer in schools.

On Saturday, the mayor made several stops in Rome. After the meeting, he showed up at the formerly dilapidated Piazza di San Cosimato in a New York Knicks playoff hat and a black polo shirt. Then, he went to the World Meeting on Human Fraternity conference.

Mr. Adams toured the piazza with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, to hear about the work of Rome Cures Rome, a civic association that helps clean up the area. The two mayors also painted over graffiti on a building there.

“Government can’t do it all,” Mr. Adams said as he painted, speaking in favor of the role civic groups can play.

Mr. Adams has said part of his goal on the trip is to learn how to deal with New York’s problems from a city like Rome. Both Mr. Gualtieri and Mr. Adams, in speeches before the World Meeting on Human Fraternity on Saturday, emphasized the bonds between cities and the shared crises like homelessness and helping migrants seeking asylum.

“The issues are basically the same,” Mr. Gualtieri told the audience.

Mr. Adams, addressing the crowd at the piazza, said that “New York is the Rome of America,” echoing a phrase he uses often when describing other cities.

Earlier in his trip, Mr. Adams visited the Colosseum and saw the construction site of a Metro station there. He also toured the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums.

Mr. Adams attended the closing ceremony of the conference on Saturday night at St. Peter’s Basilica. On Sunday, Mr. Adams is expected to tour a site that is providing services for migrants. He will return to New York City on Monday.

Mr. Adams’s celebration of the pope’s antiwar message provoked criticism from some in New York City, who say the mayor has not spoken out enough on ending Palestinian suffering during Israel’s war in Gaza.

“The response we need is a leader who will show up for Israeli and Jewish communities and Palestinian and Muslim communities,” said Shahana Hanif, a Muslim councilwoman from Brooklyn.

Mr. Adams said people have thanked him for his stance on Palestine and Israel.

“I’m comfortable in how I’ve taken a strong stance that children and innocent people should not die globally,” he said. “I’m not the type of person that is inconsistent in that message.”

A picture caption with an earlier version of this article misidentified what Mayor Eric Adams was looking at from the balcony of his office in the Campidoglio. It was the Roman Forum, not the Imperial Fora.
