Andorra Snow Weekend - Ski Trip from Barcelona

Last year I went on the Andorra Snow weekend with Stoke Travel and had the best time! I bused from Barcelona with the group. We had hotel accommodation in a gorgeous little town not far from the mountain. It was all so easy! The cost of the trip included all the food at the hotel, transfers to the mountain and back, ski gear and bar crawl on the last night! There was such a good group of us and considering I didn't know how to Ski I still had the best time! Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a cheap, stress-free, ski weekend in Europe.

Affordable mountain escape from Barcelona: The Pyrenees

Jan 17, 2014

Regina W Bryan

Nuria Valley

I’m sometimes asked why I chose to live in Barcelona instead of Madrid. A big part of my reasoning was Barcelona’s proximity to things I love: the Mediterranean Sea, France, wine regions and the stunning Pyrenees Mountains on the border of Spain and France.

To get out of Dodge (or Barcelona, in this case) and see the wild side of Catalonia, you might assume a rental car is needed. Not true. The train in Spain does not travel only on the plains, it also heads up into the Pyrenees Mountains passing the timberline and reaching a gorgeous alpine valley. Welcome to the Vall de Nuria.

Vall de Nuria Hotel

Vall de Nuria Hotel. Photo: Regina W. Bryan

Exploring Vall De Nuria In the valley there is a lake, a hotel and countless activities for families including pony rides, boats, playgrounds and plenty of winter sports when the snow falls. Apart from all the kiddie stuff, there are also extensive trails that spread out from the hotel into the Pyrenees. This is a hiker’s paradise.

Hiking the trails You’ve got two options for getting up to the Vall de Nuria: You can take the zipper train (‘cremallera’) or you can hike a trail from Ribes de Freser or Queralbs . When I went to Nuria, I walked. At the trailhead in Queralbs it read three hours, but it took us four. Of course, we stopped often to take photos and rest. The trail cuts up through a trough leading into the valley and hugs a river, crossing it several times and offering up spectacular waterfall views.

If you choose to do the trek, make sure to have sturdy boots and lunch packed. Also, it’s important to look at the weather before you go as this area is much colder than Barcelona and can be stormy. Trust us, you don’t want to be in Nuria during a thunder and lightening storm.

Though it took us four hours to get up to Nuria, it only took us three hours to return to Queralbs, the village where our car was parked. Still, it’s a smart idea to get an early start if you’re not going to spend the night. We drove to Queralbs, but we could have taken the train to Ribes de Freser from Barcelona, which only takes about 2hr 15min.

Going by zipper train

If you’re not up for the slog, then simply take the train from Barcelona, get off at Ribes de Freser, and then get on the cremallera (zipper train), which will take you all the way up the mountainside, and leave you at the door of the hotel in the valley. Also look for specials on the Valldenuria.com website. For example, they’ve got the ‘Pack Cremallera Dinar Al Restaurant de L’Hotel’ for €35.00, that consists of lunch at the hotel’s restaurant plus a round-trip ticket on the zipper train from Ribes de Fresser.

The hike up to the Vall de Nuria is going to be prettier than taking the zipper train, but in the winter, the zipper train is the only way to access the area (cars are not allowed). If you plan to visit Nuria in a day, then set out as soon as the sun is up, estimating four hours there and four hours back to Barcelona by train (maybe a little less). Trying to do the hike and train travel on the same day is probably overdoing it. If you want to hike, treat yourself and stay the night at the hotel.

The Vall de Nuria is gorgeous and will give you the chance to see another, perhaps unexpected, side of Catalonia and Spain.

The Pyrenees’ foothills are yours to explore by minivan, and the Nuria Valley, with its lush pastures and towering peaks overlooking a jewel-like lake, is just around the corner.

Enjoy the scenery and crisp air, and take time to hike, go horseback riding, or go boating. You can also stop by a local restaurant for a traditional meal. This small-group tour has a limited number of participants to ensure a more personalized experience.

Table of Contents

  • Full-day small group tour by minivan to the Pyrenees
  • Visiting the historic town of Vic and its cathedral and market square
  • Personalized small group and commentary
  • Riding the rack railway from Queralbs to a stunning mountain valley
  • Hiking, horse riding, boating, and other activities
  • Professional English-speaking guide
  • Transport by comfortable air-conditioned minivan

Assemble your small group and meet in central Barcelona. Be sure to wear layers of clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Take a trip to the Pyrenees in the comfort of your air-conditioned minivan. Your guide will tell you stories about the area’s past as you travel through Montseny Natural Park, which is a protected area of mountains, forests, and high moors.

Pyrenees Mountains & Medieval Towns Small Group Day Trip from Barcelona

Take in the views from the train as you travel, and then have a few hours to yourself once you arrive. For instance, you could hike up to Valley Coma de Vaca, which has a number of different trails for different fitness levels.

While physical fitness is not required for this tour, the Coma de Vaca trails require a reasonable level of fitness. Alternately, go horseback riding or boating (at your own expense) or have a meal at a traditional Catalan restaurant (at your own expense). For a complete listing of available activities, consult the Trip Itinerary. When the time comes, make your way back to Barcelona to complete your journey.

Please be aware that from November 1 to November 30, the rack railway from Queralbs will be closed between Mondays and Fridays for annual track maintenance. On these days, the tour will take a different route, one that will allow visitors to reach the mountain valleys via road or hike at a lower elevation. Your Pyrenean adventure will not be harmed as a result of these modifications.

Explore Catalunya

Your day will begin in our main office, which is located just steps from Barcelona’s world-renowned Palau de la Musica. After you’ve met your guide and used the restroom, you may want to grab a quick cup of coffee before the tour starts. While you’re waiting for your tour to depart, your guide will fill you in on what to expect for the rest of the day.

The Eixample

The Eixample neighborhood of Barcelona is where you’ll be heading when you depart the city . A brief history of Barcelona will be presented to you by your guide before the 60-minute drive to Vic can begin.

You’ll quickly leave the bustle of a busy Mediterranean city behind as you travel north from Barcelona . In 1978, UNESCO designated Montseny, a 30,000-hectare natural park in Catalonia, Spain, as a world biosphere reserve. It is still home to a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, badgers, hares, falcons, and a variety of other birds that live in the park’s beech, pine, and oak forests.

You’ll begin your journey in Vic, a quaint old market town. Visit the cathedral, the town’s magnificent renaissance, and baroque buildings, and the ancient Roman Temple, which is hidden between the old quarter’s buildings, as well as the old medieval town. The cathedral features a mix of styles, ranging from Romanesque to neo-classical. Coffee or breakfast in the town center near the beautiful arched square where the market is still held and other major events are still held will be available to you after the tour.

Queralbs, a stone-built mountain village, is the next stop after Vic, and it’s the last one on your route that can be reached by road. Leave the minivan and take the rack railway to the Nuria Valley with your guide. This picture-perfect valley in the Pyrenees features a lake and lush green pastures surrounded by towering mountains.

Vall de Nuria

Roca de la Creu Via Ferrata in Vall de Nuria

Beautiful green pastures surround a serene lake in the Nuria Valley, which is known as Vall de Nuria. One of the Pyrenees’ most picturesque valleys, this one looks like something out of a picture book.

Back to Queralbs. There are only 200 permanent residents in this sleepy mountain town, and they live in a jumble of old stone buildings. Located on a mountainside, this quaint, picture-postcard-perfect hamlet is one of the highlights of the trip. Visit the Church of Sant Sadurn de Fustanyá, which was constructed from stones so precisely hewn, legend has it that it was constructed by the fairies and witches who are said to live in the nearby caves. We’ll return to the bus in an hour or so and make our way back to Barcelona.

Plaza de Cataluna

You’ll be back in time for dinner when you return to Barcelona. To get to the metro or a taxi, ask your guide, who will be happy to point you in the right direction. If you’re planning on staying in town, he can recommend some good restaurants.

Departure & Return

Departure Point: Carrer del Palau de la Música , C/ Palau de la Música, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

All of our tours meet at our office, which is direct across from the outside cafe area of the Palau de la Musica. We advise that you arrive 15 minutes before the tour starts.

Departure Time 8:30 AM

Return Details: Plaça de Catalunya , Plaça de Catalunya, 08002 Barcelona, Spain

Depending on the size of the group and the traffic restrictions on the day of the tour, your tour will finish back at the office, or in Placa Catalunya, which is an easy 3-5 minute walk from the office.

Overall rating

A nice little addition to a Barcelona trip. The stop at Vic was particularly enjoyable. The guide did a nice job of adding some historical perspective. Would not have minded an expanded tour of the town . Trip to the ... ski resort in the Pyrenees was interesting. I felt the description of the hiking opportunities was a little overblown. I would have preferred a bit more time to explore the mountain.

Our guide Rodrigues was great, the town of Medieval Vic was worth the visit, and the cog train trip into the Pyrenees valley Valle Nuira was stunning, with rugged beauty beneath the peak ridges (the French border is just ... over the ridge line, a 2+ hour trek each way). We enjoyed a 1.5 hour trek through forest and overlooking the valley.

This was a great tour. As we arrived at the Pyrenees it was snowing and misty which was a great surprise as the view was gorgeous. We weren’t able to hike as much as we wanted but the views were unforgettable. The h ... ighlight of the trip was the unexpected stop at a little town by the mountain side. The town was untouched by the modern world and almost magical to walk through - the rain and mist just added to its mystic

Pyrenees Extreme 2301

pyrenees mountains day trip from barcelona

The whole group made it in time for the welcome briefing in our start hotel in Castelldefels. Andreas and Willi from Germany did the guided city tour in Barcelona and we had a lot of fun. Visiting the famous Sagrada Familia was overvelming.

Let's start our engines! A long first riding day with countless curves and beautiful scenery. Monserrat was one of the highlights and of course all the twisty mountain roads during the day. Our destination for tonight is an old monastery,  just great! The group did really well and everybody enjoyed the first day very much.

What a day! It was a very long one because of a detour caused by road construction. All kind of roads from a spectacular goatpath in the morning to fast sweepers and a stretch of  highway in the afternoon. Great fun!

After that really long day yesterday I thought some riders want to rest today, but not this group. We started at 8 for a full and spectacular ride to San Sebastian and back. Thousands of curves, beautiful scenery and hardly any traffic. Motorcycle heaven! The whole group performed great. Congratulation! We just made it before it started raining, lucky. The extended bootbeer was fun!

On our first part in Spain we met some pilgrims doing the Camino. The mountains in the afternoon got higher and higher and we crossed the border to France to do some Tour de France passes. Unfortunately one was closed and we had to turn arround. Another wonderful day.

Today was the day of the passes,  10 in a row! We started with the famous Tour de France Pass Col du Tourmalet and had a nice coffee stop in Arreau. 9 minor passes were following and all of them were great riding fun. We arrived early and had time for bootbeer and music. Another wonderful day in motorcycle paradise, the Pyrenees.

The best riding day of the trip, countless curves, good pavement and great scenery. The highlight was the Collada de Toses, a stunning mountain pass with no traffic and excellent road conditions.

Unfortunately our last riding day. It was really good one. Some rain in the afternoon, but we found shelter in a nice restaurant and had an extended lunch. One more great riding day in motorcycle paradise.  Thanks to a great group with excellent riders and we hope to see you again....
