Prior to their official debut, Girls' Generation was known as "Super Girls", a fan-made name that reflected how SM Entertainment touted the group as the female version of Super Junior . The group was announced to include members with diverse talents and language skills for future expansion into international markets.

Throughout its pre-debut period, the group saw many lineup changes. However, perhaps its best known pre-debut lineup consisted of 12 members: Soyeon , Taeyeon , Jessica , Tiffany , Hyoyeon , Yuri , Sooyoung , Yoona , Hajin, Seohyun , Hwanhee and Chanmi . However, Soyeon, Hajin, Hwanhee and Chanmi all left or were cut from the group. A final trainee, Sunny , was added to the group shortly before its debut.

From July 7, 2007, through July 14, the debuting lineup of Girls' Generation was revealed, starting with Yoona, followed by Tiffany, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, Taeyeon, Jessica, and finally Sunny. On July 18, the group had their first public performance on Mnet's School of Rock . A week later, on July 27, a documentary titled Girls' Generation Goes To School captured the members as they prepared for their official debut.

Girls' Generation's debut single, " Into the New World ", was released on August 2, 2007. Three days later, the group held their debut stage at SBS' Inkigayo .

On October 11, Girls' Generation achieved their first-ever music show win with "Into the New World" on Mnet's M! Countdown . [1]

Girls' Generation made their first-ever comeback with the release of their first full-length album, Girls' Generation , on November 1, 2007. Its title track of the same name is a remake of Lee Seung-chul's 1989 hit song.

2008: "Kissing You", Baby Baby [ ]

Following the success of "Girls' Generation", in January 2008, the group began promoting "Kissing You" as their first studio album's second single. The music video for the song, released on January 14, featured a cameo from Super Junior's Donghae .

On March 17, 2008, a repackage of Girls' Generation , titled Baby Baby , was released. Afterwards, the members began solo promotional activities, thus sending the group into an indefinite hiatus period.

After 9 months of hiatus, in December 2008, SM Entertainment announced the group would make their comeback in January 2009.

On January 7, 2009, Girls' Generation released their first mini album, titled Gee , and its title track of the same name. The album's title track went on to become a cultural phenomenon; it claimed the number one position on Music Bank for a then-recording-breaking nine consecutive weeks. Furthermore, the song's "crab dance" choreography and skinny-jean styling set trends all over South Korea. [2] In 2011, "Gee" was crowned 'Song of the Decade' by MelOn.

Girls' Generation's second mini album, Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) , along with its title track of the same name, was released in June 2009. The physical album's release was delayed from June 25 to June 29 after controversy arose on the original artwork, which was then re-edited. Coincidentally, American pop star and global icon Michael Jackson died on the album's original intended release date while in the midst of rehearsals for the This Is It tour. Girls' Generation later paid tribute to him.

In October, Girls' Generation collaborated with labelmate f(x) for " Chocolate Love ", which served as a promotional single for LG's Chocolate cell phone.

On November 11, SM Entertainment announced that Girls' Generation would embark on their first-ever concert tour the following month. [3] Tickets for the tour went on sale on November 19 and sold out within three minutes. [4] The tour, titled Girls' Generation Asia Tour: Into The New World , initially consisted of two Seoul dates: December 19 and December 20. However, in order to meet fans' requests for additional concerts, two "encore" dates were announced in January 2010. [5]

[9] Later, a new version of the tour, titled 2011 Girls' Generation Asia Tour , made stops in South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand.

On April 23, Girls' Generation released their first original Japanese single " Mr. Taxi ". "Mr. Taxi" acted as the lead single for the group's self-titled debut Japanese album, released on June 1. The album remains the highest-selling album by a Korean group in Japan.

The group's third full-length Korean album, The Boys , was released on October 19. A repackage of the album, titled Mr. Taxi , was released on December 9. I’m curious to find out what blog platform you are working with?

I’m experiencing some small security issues with my latest blog and I’d like to find something more safeguarded.

Do you have any suggestions?

' src=

Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up.

The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Thanks

' src=

Your means of explaining the whole thing in this post is genuinely fastidious, all be capable of simply know it, Thanks a lot.

' src=

Wow, this post is good, my sister is analyzing these things, thus I am going to inform her.

' src=

I drop a comment each time I appreciate a article on a site or I have something to valuable to contribute to the discussion.

It’s caused by the passion displayed in the post I browsed. And after this post 2013 GIRLS’ GENERATION World Tour – Girls & Peace – in Singapore on 12th October | (x)clusive ★. I was actually moved enough to drop a commenta response 😉 I do have a couple of questions for you if you don’t mind. Could it be only me or do a few of these remarks appear as if they are left by brain dead individuals?

😛 And, if you are posting on additional sites, I’d like to keep up with you. Could you make a list every one of your communal sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

' src=

Companies have come to realize there is a market for secondary blog software.

Do not forget the obvious and share your blog with family members and friends who have their own blogs and websites.

' src=

I’m not sure where you’re getting your information, but good topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more.

Thanks for magnificent info I was looking for this information for my mission.

I don’t know who manages this page, but someone should update the fact that there’s only the version with the folded poster, not the one rolled in a tube anymore. Reason being is that I got an email from Yesasia a couple days ago stating that the suppliers changed the package to only having the poster packed together with the DVD set.

Now onto the DVD itself: it’s great we get another DVD concert set, but sadly 2 years later we just get the 2013 concert tour….. It’s somewhat disappointing that it’s also released months after that you-know-what (unfortunate) event back in Sept.-Oct. Oh well, at least it’s probably the last official release that has all 9 of them together, but after the release of their Best Tour in Japan, that’ll change in a flash.

same old same old with SM. i believe they did something like this with Soshi 1st tour, when it was release like couple yrs after. anyway i’ll get this when i have the money, cause it’s another treasure to be added to my other Soshi treasures.

This has nothing to do with dvd but i’m so happy that SNSD is going back here in the Philippines with SUJU and RV on april 10! YES YES YES! SOSHI JANG!!!! :)

I should think that it’s not just English speaking fans who are feeling snubbed. This DVD is being released just 2 months shy of 2 years after the concert. In the meantime, all SNSD has done in Korea is one mini-album, and one TTS min-album with 2 very short promotions for each. Meanwhile, in Japan, SNSD has held their 3rd tour, released a full length album, and 2 versions of their record-breaking ‘The Best’ album, and Tokyo Dome(the Blue-ray of which will be released the day after this DVD). Of course this Japan first strategy seems to have paid off for them as they were virtually tied (with Exo) as the highest earning performers in Korea last year.

I agree with you 100%. Korean fans have definitely been getting the short end of the stick for a while now, with their concerts feeling like recycled Japanese concerts, though there has always been a longer delay in releasing Korean concerts on DVD, compared to Japanese DVD and Blu-ray releases. Also they never did a concert tour after Mr. Mr. following the 3rd Japan Tour (though I suspect Jessica leaving was the main reason for that), though they could have also done a concert or tour for TTS. It doesn’t help that Girls’ Generation releases numerous Japanese singles and special edition CDs and Blu-rays each year, compared to one single and album per year in Korea. There is so much video footage of the girls activities in Korea it would be nice if they released another DVD (or Blu-ray ) like All About Girls’ Generation: Paradise in Phuket, maybe release a music video collection or best of or remix album (throw the fans a bone SM).

the only SNSD (solo) DVD, that i remember, that has English subtitles, is the “Paradise in Phuket DVD”. i’m sure the DVDs will still sell, fans will still buy them, but it would be really nice if the fans (from the rest of the world) can actually understand and benefit from having English subtitles. i’m bilingual in Eng/Chinese, so i am thankful for the chinese subs.

I’ll definitely be buying this but I’m disappointed that they never released their Korean concerts on Blu-ray and I don’t understand why they are no longer putting English subtitle their DVDs? It’s like they have no interest in attracting or even retaining their English speaking fans (I don’t get it)?

SNSD’s (korean) concert DVDs have always been just korean, japanese and chinese subtitles. I have both the 1st concert dvd (into the new world) and the 2nd concert dvd (Asia tour). so I do not understand what you mean by “no longer putting English subs”.

but I do hope the production team does consider putting in English subtitles in future. :)

While I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen English subtitles before on an SNSD solo DVD, I think a good argument for them is they already attracted so many fans without putting English subtitles/translations on about 90% of their material, so would it really make a huge difference if they added it? So many fans don’t speak/read any Korean but they still enjoy SNSD, and K-pop in general.

All About Girls’ Generation: Paradise in Phuket (6 DVD set) had English Subtitles so did the DVD that came with their First Photo Book.

All their CD and DVD have English words all over their covers, many Girls’ Generation songs have English word in them and up until recently the group had two American’s in it (three if you include Sunny). I really don’t understand the logic of not including English subtitles, considering how easy it would be to include them. It seems to me that SM Entertainment are intentionally cutting the cord with the English speaking fans and instead focusing on the Chinese fans (which is kind of sad).

Also don’t South Korean’s have HDTVs? Aren’t Samsung and LG from South Korea? I think it is about time SM Entertainment started releasing Blu-rays in Korea. All Girls’ Generation’s concerts and music videos are available on Blu-ray in Japan (come on SM). Knowing my luck SM will probably release a nine Blu-ray set of all things Girls’ Generation and it won’t have English subtitles (and Soshified won’t sub them). I guess I will have to just lookout for the subtitles on YouTube:(

Right, AAGG and the Tokyo photobook had English subtitles, but none of the concert DVD’s had them, correct? Then this not having them is nothing new.

I for whatever reason when I saw the subtitles listed as Korean, Japanese, and Chinese felt that English speaking fans were being ignored, but you are right none of their concerts have come with English subtitles.

Unsettled Identity Negotiations: The Armenian Diaspora in Krasnodar Krai

Profile image of Ulrike Ziemer

This chapter, based on ethnographic fieldwork, explores cosmopolitanism through the prism of unifying and dividing processes and their impact on the identity of young Armenians living within the Armenian community in southern Russia's Krasnodar krai. The empirical research presented shows the ways in which cosmopolitan practices allow young Armenians to draw selectively on a variety of discursive cultural meanings, enabling them to combine sameness and difference into their everyday lives. Sameness is understood in terms of belonging to the Armenian diaspora – a discourse of unity that is encouraged by Armenian voluntary organizations and the Armenian Apostolic Church. Conversely, difference is the result of diverse narratives of migration, different places of origin and different dialects of Armenian language which all serve to form a hierarchy of power within the Armenian diaspora in Krasnodar krai.

Nationalities Papers

Dmitry Chernobrov

In this paper, we explore the role of the early 20 th century Armenian genocide and the unresolved Karabakh conflict of the 1990s in identity among the new generation of Armenian diaspora-those who grew up after the establishment of the independent Armenian state in 1991. We draw on original interviews with diasporic youth in France, the United Kingdom and Russia-diasporas which were largely built in the aftermath of the genocide and the Karabakh war. Diaspora youth relate to these events through transmitted collective memories, but also reconnect with the distant homeland's past and present in new ways as they engage with new possibilities of transnational digital communication and mobility. Their experiences of identity shed light on how the new generation of diasporic Armenians defines itself in relation to the past; how this past is (re)made present in their interpretations of the Karabakh conflict and in everyday behaviors; and how diasporic youth experience the dilemmas of 'moving on' from traumatic narratives that for a long time have been seen as foundational to their identity.

My dissertation explores the conditions and actions that led to the transformation of a post-genocide Armenian dispersion into a transnational diaspora. Over time, banishment and mistreatment had forced large numbers of Armenians to abandon their ancestral homes in the Ottoman Empire. The most decisive manifestation of such displacement was the deportations and wholesale massacres during WWI, retrospectively defined as genocide, which resulted in large concentrations of survivors in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Using histories of Armenian communities and institutions, the Armenian language periodical press, and the information acquired through in-depth interviews with notable diaspora Armenians in Lebanon, France and the United States, I analyze the formative impact that changing international and host-country specific socio-political conditions have had on the ways in which Armenian elites and institutions defined and redefined their attitudes towards Soviet Armenia; how competing discourses on conceptions of the Armenian homeland, diasporic identities and incompatible ideologies and orientations towards Soviet Armenia clashed and led at once to the emergence of different forms of Armenian identity and to a transnational schism in the Armenian diaspora. I suggests that while genocide recognition after the fiftieth anniversary of the Armenian genocide in 1965 introduced a shared ground between the formerly hostile Armenian camps, by the mid-1980s, the prevailing institutional divisions produced homeland-centered and diaspora-centered paradigms of diasporic belongings. Throughout, my research considers the ways in which institutions and leaders aspired to forge and project transnationally coherent, aspirational Armenian identities, to which they worked to rally their constituencies, and juxtaposes these efforts to the actual subjectivity and fluidity of Armenian diasporic identities and self-images of subsequent generations, shaped under different host-country contexts. My study draws on theoretical and methodological principles developed in diaspora studies, transnationalism and globalization. It contributes to social constructivist perspective in diaspora studies by stressing the role of elites and institutions in the formation of the post-genocide Armenian diaspora and diasporic identities, and equally emphasizing the influences of changing international and host-country conditions and the policies of a state, projecting itself as the homeland.

The article considers whether support for multicultural ideology by the ethnic majority leads to a more inclusive sociocultural context for ethno-cultural minorities. We investigate the role of common superordinate identity in these relations on the example of Soviet identity in Armenia. A socio-psychological survey was conducted among 213 representatives of the ethnic majority of Armenia using the scale of multicultural ideology of J.W. Berry (2020), the scale of Soviet identity by K. Velkova (2020) and the scale of the permeability of social boundaries as adapted by M.R. Ramos et al. (2016). The results show that support for multicultural ideology by Armenians is positively associated with the permeability of social boundaries for Russians only if the Soviet identity is highly important for Armenians. To conclude, recategorization is influential for building inclusive sociocultural context and harmonizing intercultural relations.

Preserving Armenian identity in Lebanon and in those countries where traditional Armenian diaspora institutions exist has been much easier than in Russia. Given the fact that Russia is hosting the largest number of ethnic Armenians? it is utterly important to understand the root-causes and implications for high degree of assimilation of Armenians in Russia? Naturally many factors weigh in the above-mentioned divergent outcomes of Armenians identity preservation in various countries. A big portion of these factors is predetermined by the realities of particular host country (political system, history and geography and etc), and are beyond the influence of Armenian communities of both Lebanon and Russia. However, the research conducted in these two countries showed, there are also factors that influence identity preservation that are within the scope of influence of Armenians. This research sets to claim that the existence of effective and interconnected web of institutions is one of the key reasons behind the success of Lebanese Armenians in keeping their identity strong and thriving. On the contrary, the lack of such sustainable institutions and the experience of sporadic mobilizations have been the characteristic features of the Russian Armenian communities. Based on the lessons learned from the experience of Lebanese Armenians institutions the research has developed a set of policy recommendations that can hopefully enhance the capacity of Russian Armenian institutions and increase the effectiveness of identity preservation efforts in Russia. Some of those recommendations, naturally, are targeting those institutions that exist in various Armenian communities of Russia. Consolidation of Armenian institutions and synchronization of their activities, as well as experience sharing within and beyond Russian Armenians, will positively affect identity preservation efforts among Armenian communities in Russia. However, taking into account the importance of the matter as well as the existing structures and opportunities, (re)organization and institutionalization of Russian Armenians should attract greater attention of the other actors as well; pan-Armenian institutions such as Armenian Apostolic Church and pan-diasporic organizations should do more to assist the efforts of Armenians residing in Russia. Most importantly the Armenian state should have more proactive role in mediating the existing grievances, mistrust and lack of institutional resources in Russian Armenian communities, especially taking into account the fact that there are a number of state institutions mandated with that task, Ministry of Diaspora being the main one.

In this article, we explore the role of the early 20th-century Armenian genocide and the unresolved Karabakh conflict of the 1990s in identity shaping among the new generation of Armenian diaspora—those who grew up after the establishment of the independent Armenian state in 1991. We draw on original interviews with diasporic youth in France, the United Kingdom, and Russia—diasporas that were largely built in the aftermath of the genocide and the Karabakh war. The article foregrounds the complexities of diasporas, and the Armenian diaspora in particular, by briefly examining three conspicuous approaches to diaspora conceptualizations in theoretical and comparative studies of diasporas and the empirical realities of the Armenian diaspora. It is suggested as a conclusion to account both the discrepancies within theoretical and comparative studies of diasporas which complicate the conventional thinking and approaches to diaspora, and also the tensions between homeland-centrism/diaspora-centrism, ethnic/transethnic, Armenian speaking/non-Armenian speaking, religious/secular (and other) which exist within and across segments of the Armenian diaspora.
