Michelle and Denis White, their children, partners and Mrs White's parents, Kevin and Helen Lehman, were in Fiji for a wedding earlier this month when the unthinkable happened.
The family booked a day trip with the Sigatoka River Safari company and on September 9 jumped on board a jet boat ready to take part.
The tour involves a return trip on a jet boat to a Fijian village and is popular with many tourists who visit the country.
However, while travelling to the village, the family witnessed the boat ahead hit rocks in shallow water and flip, trapping its occupants underneath.
Mrs White said other passengers aboard the boat her family was on were in shock, but forced their driver to stop and help.
"We all sort of sat there with our mouths open because we couldn't believe what we had just seen," Mrs White said.
"I stood up and said: "Does anyone have first aid training?"
"One guy said he had done it a long time ago ... I do first aid training each year through my job, but I never, ever thought I would have to use it in a situation like this, so I wasn't very confident either.
"The boat was upside down on the rocks. We didn't know what we were going to be faced with.
"My sons and I jumped out from the boat and just raced over.
"When we got closer you could see blood everywhere and some people's arms were sticking out. It was horrific.
"I remember it all happening, but I think I just went into this other mode where I was a different person."
Mrs White soon mobilised the rest of her family and the passengers from her boat to do what they could to help, shouting directions and helping the injured.
One lady was struggling to breath, while another was covered in blood and one man could barely move with what was believed to be leg injuries.
At the same time, the motor of the jet boat was still running and petrol was leaking.
The group managed to help all of the passengers escape by lifting the boat for them to scramble out before eventually shutting off the motor.
"The lady that had been walking around covered in blood, it was actually the mother of the lady that had been struggling to breath," Mrs White said.
"I started with her first because order of triage ... she wasn't breathing well.
"It was only after that that I really paid attention to the lady covered in blood and realised half her scalp was hanging off her head.
"I got her and put her between my legs and wrapped it all up with the sarong they give you for the trip ... it was just horrific."
The owner and founder of the jet boat tour, Australian Jay Whyte, was on scene at the accident, with helicopters required to airlift the five injured Australians to hospital in Suva.
Mrs White received an email last week to say it was expected those that were injured had been or would soon be released from hospital.
"Afterwards I just collapsed ... my legs were jelly," Mrs White said.
"I think that's when I went into shock because I had just been on autopilot.
"It was absolutely unbelievable ... the drivers had no first aid training.
"There was no safety procedures in place."
Fijian news reports have indicated police are investigating the incident, but no charges have been laid.
Following the accident, Mr Whyte said the company "was not releasing any information at this stage because we are conducting our own internal procedures".
Mrs White said the family was able to enjoy the rest of the holiday and wedding, but was still "shaken" following the accident.

As you depart the town area you will be captivated by the unrivalled beauty of the Sigatoka Valley or as it is otherwise know “The Salad Bowl of Fiji”. See for yourselves where Fiji’s delicious fruit and vegetables are grown.
Your Mini-Coach driver will provide you with interesting information about the province you are visiting and make your 10 mile journey inland as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
Upon arrival at the valley departure point, you are welcomed and given life jackets for the impending safari adventure.
Safety drills are provided to all, the chief is appointed and you’re off to discover the heart and soul of Fiji.
Your boat captain will provide an insightful commentary on the history of Fiji, the region’s cannibal past which includes the last recorded act of cannibalism towards a European; you will hear how the tribe survived till the modern day and also hear firsthand the oral history of the Fiji Islands and learn more about the feared kaicolo (mountain people).
As you venture upriver, you will be left in awe by the amazing natural scenery which will have you reaching for your camera (or iPhone) capturing moments that will take your breath away. Waving to the plethora of locals going about their daily lives, you will feel like an early explorer as you navigate your way up Fiji’s longest river.
Then after some 40 minutes on the river you will arrive at your designated village. Sigatoka River Safari is the only tour in Fiji which visits a different village each day of the week, to ensure all our guests enjoy life in an authentic Fijian koro (village).
Arriving at your designed village you will be greeted by your village guide who will welcome you like long lost family and assist you with access to your village.
One of the highlights of your Safari experience is being able to partake in Fijian village life which includes following village protocol such as all ladies of the tour party, as they will be requested to wear the complimentary Safari sulu (sarong) provided and all guests wearing hats will be asked to remove them when within the village boundary.
Your village guide will walk you to the community hall to present your “ sevusevu ” or kava with your designated tour chief receiving the first bowl of kava…BULA!!
Once the formalities are over, you are now part of the village. You will be shown around the village and meet the beautiful Fijian people on their terms, seeing firsthand how they really live. From there you will join the community in a Fijian lunch prepared by the women, tasting food and fruits grown in the farm nearby. The Safari tour is all about giving your five senses (seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, smelling) a truly Fijian experience.
Your time with your new friends will fly by as you enjoy their Fijian hospitality which includes dancing and singing. After a memorable two hours in the village it is time to say good-bye.
The farewell song of Isa Lei is sung to you and for some tears will flow, but you will leave knowing you have made new friends and memories that will last a life time. You will soon agree that your hearts have been warmed, your soul has been touch and that Sigatoka River Safari is “Simply Unforgettable”
Sigatoka River Safari started as a result of a then 13 year old Australian, by the name of Jay Whyte who first visited Fiji in 1991, he met his friend Pita Matasau who introduced him to the real Fiji. Pita took Jay & his family high into the Fijian interior to his village of Draiba. It was from this unique, authentic experience that Jay decided other people should discover the Fijian interior.

A holiday to New Zealand in 1992, saw Jay and his family enjoying a scenic jet boat ride; which created a spark in Jay’s mind, combining two experiences into one!
Coming back to Fiji to start his dream in 2006, Jay is always happy to share his passion and ensure that you too experience a “Simply Unforgettable” adventure into the heart of Fiji.
All of Sigatoka River Safari’s jet boat captains were trained by Neil Ross, a pioneer in jet boating in New Zealand with over 25 years of experience in the industry.
The captains including Fiji’s first female Jet Boat Captain who were trained in New Zealand and Fiji and regularly undergo training and also take time to participate in some of New Zealand’s Jet Boating Marathons.
Community Work
Our goal at Sigatoka River Safari is not to change the way villagers live but to help improve the villagers’ living standards. This is why for every visitor into the village, the company contributes directly to the village, and this means these monies go entirely to these remote villages and are used by them in their various village projects.
Safari team
Our team will look after you and you will feel like family from the first moment you connect with us. Majority from the Safari team are from the province of Navosa and Nadroga and take great pride in sharing the beauty and stories of the provinces and the history of Fiji.
We are here to assist you so please do not hesitate to reach out to us at any time should you need any assistance at any time during the tour… from taking your pictures to holding your handbag!

An overview of sigatoka valley.
The Sigatoka Valley is also known as the “Salad Bowl of Fiji”, because of its fertile soil and abundant crops. The valley is home to 52 villages, each with its own history and culture. The villages are located on both sides of the Sigatoka River, but the left (west) side has the main road, while the right (east) side has no bridges and is more isolated. Only 2-3 villages have boats to cross the river, and most of the villagers rely on agriculture for their livelihood. The valley is famous for its sweet pineapple, which is sold at the local markets and roadside stalls.
Sigatoka River Safari
The Sigatoka River Safari is a half-day tour that operates in the morning or afternoon. The tour includes pick up and drop off from your resort, and transfer to Sigatoka town, where you will sign in and sort into groups.
You will then drive to the jet ski boat center, where you will board a custom-built safari jet boat that can seat up to 17 passengers. You will be given a life jacket and you can also leave your change of clothes at the center. You will also meet your boat driver, who will be your guide for the trip.
What to pack for Sigatoka River Safari
I’d categorise Sigatoka River Safari as a mild adventurous activity as the physical intensity level is low. However, it’d be best to be prepared as I forgot to bring a change of clothes:
- Wear swimsuit underneath your clothes and or bring a change of clothes
- Dry bag for your electronics
- Wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet in
- Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses
- Mosquito repellent
For the village visit, if you are a lady you’d be given a sarong to wear. If you would like to avoid that, then you need to wear a knee-length skirt, and preferably a top that covers your shoulder.
Jet Ski Cruise up Sigatoka River
The jet ski boat ride is a 17 km cruise into the Sigatoka Valley, along the winding and scenic river. Our boat driver Freddy was hilarious and informative, and it was a pleasure to zip up the river with the river and valley view.
We often see locals going about their daily life along the banks too, and almost always they’ll wave back at you!
Freddy also did a few sharp turns up, but he saved the fun moves for the return trip!
Village visit
The highlight of the Sigatoka River Safari is the village visit, where you will get to visit a local village and learn about their culture and traditions. The village that you will visit depends on the day of the week, as the tour rotates among 15 different villages to ensure that each village benefits from the tourism and that the villagers are not overwhelmed by the visitors. Each village has its own charm and personality, and you will be welcomed with open arms and warm smiles.
Note: the village we visited included a relatively steep albeit short hike up, which might be difficult for some.
Fijian village etiquette
Before you enter the village, you will learn the etiquette and customs that you need to follow. Your village guide will tell you this but here is what you need to know:
• In the village, women cannot wear pants, so you need a sarong over regardless. You will be given a free sarong at the Sigatoka town check-in if you are a lady.
• Hats are also not allowed as a sign of respect, so you need to remove them before you enter the village.
• You cannot reach above the elders, as this is considered rude. You need to ask for permission and thank them if you need to do so.
• You cannot touch people’s heads, as this is considered sacred. You need to apologize and clap your hands if you accidentally do so.
Kava welcome ceremony
The kava welcome ceremony, is a traditional ritual that involves drinking kava, a drink made from the root of a pepper plant. Kava is a mild narcotic that has a relaxing and calming effect, and it is used for social and ceremonial purposes. The kava ceremony is a sign of respect and friendship, and the first thing people visiting other villagers will do.
The kava ceremony will start with you presenting a gift of kava to the village chief or elder, who will accept it and give a welcome speech. Our defacto leader of the group is the oldest male, as per Fijian’s hierarchy for gender and age.
Then we headed to the village chief’s community hall for the welcoming ceremony. The men also enter first, then the women, taking off our shoes and sitting down on the weave mat.
A welcome speech was given by the chief and elders as our guide presented our kava. The kava will then be brewed in a large wooden bowl and strained with a cloth. The kava will be served by a boy, who will swing it around for people to see.
The first cup of kava will go to your elder, who will represent your group, and then to the village elder, who will represent the village. The rest of the cups will go to the other guests and villagers, who will clap their hands before and after drinking. The kava tastes very strong, like earthy tequila minus the alcohol, and has a tingly and numbing aftertaste.
It’s best not to drink too many cups even though the villagers will offer refills to you!
We were also given flower garlands and warpaints (which is now baby powder) by the village ladies, which was the custom back in the days.
Lunch at the community center
After the kava ceremony, we walked through the village to have lunch at the community center, where you will enjoy a delicious and authentic Fijian meal.
Since we’re in the valley, there was no seafood. The meal will consist of chicken, homemade bread, vegetables, and root crops, such as cassava, taro, and sweet potato. The food will be cooked in a traditional way, using an underground oven called a lovo. The food will be wrapped in banana leaves and placed on hot stones, and then covered with soil and left to cook for several hours. The result is a tender and flavorful feast that will satisfy your appetite.
The village visit will end with some dancing and singing, where you will get to see the villagers perform their traditional dances and songs, and also join them in the fun. The dances and songs are a way of expressing their culture and identity, and also celebrating their joy and gratitude. They invited everyone to join, and it always end in a Congo line!
Jet Ski Boat return
We returned on the jet ski boat as well, and this is where the adrenaline comes in. Remember to put your phone and things in a dry bag to prepare for the 360 degree spins.
The spins are not as scary as they sound, and they are actually quite fun. It wasn’t very violent but you will very likely get wet.
Hi, my name is Nam. I am 24 and spent half my life in Hong Kong and the other half in UK. I believe there's endless experience and beauty in the world and this is me chronicling how to experience the best at the best price.

The River Boats Operate in Zurich From April to October
The river boats only run from April to October and are all equipped with panoramic glass roofs to get you the best views of the city. They are low and flat so that they can fit under the seven bridges over the Limmat and they stop at various points along the river and on a small portion of Lake Zurich. Certain placess on the route get very busy, like Landesmuseum, the main starting point, for example, so get there early. As well as travelling up and down they also go onto Lake Zurich.
New Climate Neutral E-Boats Introduced in 2023
In Spring 2023 new e-boats were introduced to the fleet and these new longer boats can accommodate more passengers and offer a climate friendly alternative to the older models. They also offer a different seating arrangement and can accommodate wheelchairs. You can read all about the E-Boats here .
Hop On and Hop Off on Zurich River Boats
You can hop on and hop off whenever you choose on the Zurich River Boats. Do check the website for full details of departure times and routes. As they run on the river they are subject to weather and water restrictions so after a spell of very heavy rainfall resulting in high water levels they are sometimes unable to run – as they need to fit safely under the bridges.
Glass Boats For Best Views of the City of Zurich
The boats have a lot of windows so that you can see the views all around and unlike the previous models which used to get quite hot in sunny weather, the new electric boats are equipped with air conditioning. However, the best thing about them is that they are remarkable value as they are one of the many modes of transport included in your regular tram/train/bus ticket in Zurich. Don’t just take a trip on one if you’re a visitor – use them as a local too!
Wasser Taxis Zurich
You may also be interested to know that there are a number of water taxis or “ Wasser Taxis ” in Zurich as in the picture above. Rates vary a lot and also the types of offering as some take you on simple journeys along the Limmat, others you can hire for a fixed price per hour and others require a minimum number of passengers and offer added extras such as refreshments and meals too. You can find them at the quayside around Bürkliplatz and Bauschänzli as well as various other locations around the lake.
Boat Cruises On Lake Zurich
ZSG operate a number of boat cruises around Lake Zurich too. You might have read that we went on a great “ Build Your Burger Cruise” some time ago which as well as being a fun excursion was also very delicious! We also really enjoyed our Sunset Cruise outing too.
In fact there are all sorts of boat cruises you can enjoy from simple trips across the lake, to tours all around the lake, to a huge variety of themed cruises. From Brunch to BBQ cruises to Silent Discos to Mezze Cruises, there is bound to be one that you will love!

SR-22 Crash in Zurich
- Incident : Small-plane crash
- Location : Zurich Klothen Airport (ZRH)
- Time/Date : Afternoon Oct. 22
- Impact : Flight delays
Summary A Cirrus SR22 small aircraft crashed at Zurich Airport in the afternoon Oct. 22. A handful of people were on board, of which at least two died. Emergency crew are at the scene and have partly shut down a runway. The airport stopped all traffic for about 10 minutes immediately after the accident but has since resumed operations.
report in French and photo
Report in German here: http://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/zuerich/flugzeug-stuerzt-in-zuerich-kloten-ab-103405
One detail: According to the Swiss newspaper, the flight was not supposed to land at Zurich, but was filed Geneva - Berlin direct. Don’t know whether true or not. But if true, a technical landing comes to mind - possibly icing - which may have lead to a stall during landing. PURE GUESSING so far.
Tragic news. The ILS 14 in Zurich airport is a “no surprise” approach so one would indeed guess something was wrong to end up in a probable stall so close to the runway
Very tragic indeed.
This report has the call sign, N467BD. Anybody knows where the plane was stationed? Registration is to a US trust, as usual for N-registered planes in Europe.

Incident: Swiss A343 at Zurich on Oct 22nd 2008, go-around because crash of preceding aircraft
By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Oct 22nd 2008 15:32Z, last updated Wednesday, Oct 22nd 2008 15:56Z
A Swiss Airbus A340-300, registration HB-JMJ performing flight LX189 from Shanghai (China) to Zurich (Switzerland), had to go around on command by Zurich tower while performing an ILS approach to runway 14. A preceding light aircraft, a Cirrus SR22 (registration N467BD), had crashed around 100 meters short of runway 14 at 15:58 local time (13:58Z) due to a power failure on final approach. The airport was closed for 9 minutes while emergency services were attending the wreckage, causing havoc to traffic in and around Zurich Airport with all holds stacked up. Several other airliners diverted. HB-JMJ landed with a delay of 44 minutes. Looks like the plane is rather fresh in Europe - it was ferried on March 26 this year, according to a plane spotter:
26/03 HB-VWB C525 ICT-CYYR DHC01 DHC8 CYYZ-CYYR (RP-C3017) N732WT C210 CYYR-BGBW N272DS DA40 CYYR-BGBW N467BD SR22 CYYR-BGBW
Perhaps it’s just my reading,
I sure hope no one else was incovenienced by the 9 minutes when the airport was closed.
And then “havoc” caused by the inconvenience. What was that SR22 pilot thinking?
And then there is the on-time issues with the Swiss Airbus having to go around, wasting fuel, and being 44 min late. Can you imagine?
Someone in the editorial department needs to go to sensitivity training.
But it’s probably just my reading.
Power failure? Is this an accurate report? Statistically, in a single engine piston plane, the most common cause of an engine failure is running out of fuel.
But I always find these early reports on what actually happened bordering on comical as the media, knowing very little about aviation, almost always gets the facts wrong initially.
Very tragic for the families involved. I hope we get more accurate data. What an additional tragedy that an Airbus had to be delayed 9 minutes! [:#]
no it’s not only your reading - I feel the same when I read this - what is a 44 min delay against 2 people dead and 2 in serious condition. Very inappropriate. What do people think?
I also do not believe in just a power failure without having this confirmed by an investigation. But sure looks like the airplane stalled close to the runway, or had an incredible sink rate - so many possible scenarios. Freezing level must have been at around 5000’ at the time, with 8 C on the ground (roughly 1000’). Induction icing? Fuel pump off? No fuel? I think speculation does not help here - let our thoughts be with the 2 people in hospital, and with the families.
“…let our thoughts be with the 2 people in hospital, and with the families.”
I think at this point that should be the primary thought. Anything else is pure speculation. A temperture of 8C on the ground though is pretty warm. In my experience any ice is melted by the time the plane lands if that were an issue. So it is all speculation at this point. As usual, need more accurate details.
Here is the complete ATC recording from Zurich. The pilot had the ground in sight but not the runway. He was way below the glideslope and on vectors, may have been VFR in very marginal weather.
Norman LSZH2-Oct-22-2008-1330Z.mp3 (3.63 MB)
Works great. Thanks.
works great. For those who do not want to go through the whole tape, here is the most significant info:
ATC vectors N467BD to the airport - Hdg 280 - Hdg 260. Then BD checks in with another controller “with you at 6000”. ATC gives: “Hdg 320”. “Descend 5000”. “Hdg 230. Can you give me 160 kts?” BD confirms to fly at 160 until 4NM. BD reports “on ILS14”. ATC says “report altitude”. BD says “3400, Hdg144”. ATC says “you are right of the localizer. Able to continue?” BD says “will continue on present heading”. ATC asks “do you have the Glide Slope?” BD says “negative”. ATC says: “Climb 6000”. After a while ATC says: “Say altitudfe”. BD says: “3500, power failure”. ATC: “Do you have runway in sight?” BD: “negative, but we have visual ground contact, request to continue VFR”. After a while, ATC says: “Do you have runway in sight?” A little later, again: “Do you have runway in sight?” - Thereafter the tape is full of orders to go around, hold, climb, etc, to other airplanes. One pilot asks “Do we now have too much tailwind on 14?” ATC says: “No, we have an emergency”.
So, IMC with ground contact but no runway and a ‘power failure’, this is why you drill PULL CHUTE into your head. Scenario based training has me pulling the chute anytime I am IMC with low ceilings w/o an engine. And by low I mean around 2500 feet. If the ceiling isn’t high enough to allow you to pop out of the clouds, look around, decide whether a landing can be made and if not still have time to pull the chute, it is chute time.
If ‘power failure’ isn’t a power failure, then maybe what i said doesn’t hold…
How high AGL was he at 3500 ft ? Could CAPs not be an option ?
I think the airport is around 1400 feet (based on a quick google), so 3500 would have been enough,
Thanks for posting this; I didn’t have the time to listen to the recording.
From the context of the recording, or from the context of European phraseology, does power failure usually mean engine or electrical failure? Personally, if I had an engine failure, I would not worry about cancelling IFR/requesting VFR, especially at just a few thousand feet above the ground! And if they said I couldn’t continue VFR, there’s not much I could do about it!
But… if I had an electrical failure (presumably partial since the radio still worked - but in my SR20 I once had the essential bus fail which wiped out a lot of avionics even though I still had comm) - anyway, in an electrical failure situation I might be more inclined to say that I want to stay VFR, since I could in theory climb back into the clouds (ATC gave a climb to 6000 ft) but I might prefer not to.
So, any chance this is some kind of electrical problem rather than engine?
