  • Southern Asia: Rainforests range from India and Burma to Malaysia, Java, and Borneo; Bangladesh has the largest mangrove forests in the world.
  • Australia : Warm-temperate rainforests exist in New South Wales and Victoria, cool-temperate rainforests in Victoria and Tasmania, and at high altitudes in New South Wales and Queensland.
  • North America's Pacific Northwest: Temperate rainforests extend from Prince William Sound in Alaska to the coast of British Columbia and northern California.
  • The Amazon : At 1.2 billion acres, the Amazon is home to 10% of the world's known species of plants and animals.
  • The Congo: Sadly, one of the world's most endangered ecosystems, this 1.5-million-square-mile rainforest is home to five national parks.
  • Bosawas Biosphere Reserve : The largest rainforest you've never heard of, this northern Nicaraguan jungle is more than 5 million acres.
  • Daintree Rainforest : Queensland, Australia's Daintree Rainforest is enormous and thought to be the world's oldest.
  • Tongass National Forest: Not where you might expect a rainforest, but Alaska's Tongass is half-covered in rainforests and home to Alaska's largest trees.
  • Wildlife: Embark on a safari in Rwanda's rainforest to encounter the majestic silverback gorillas in their natural habitat, a truly awe-inspiring experience.
  • Photography: Use your camera lens to capture the breathtaking beauty of the rainforest, from the vibrant hues of exotic flora to the elusive wildlife hiding within the lush foliage.
  • Eco Travel : Immerse yourself in sustainable travel practices, supporting conservation efforts and responsible tourism initiatives that protect the delicate ecosystem of the rainforest.

  • Canoeing and Boat Tours: Navigate through winding tributaries and expansive rivers aboard a canoe or boat, allowing you to observe the intricate ecosystem of the rainforest up close while enjoying the serenity of the water.
  • Birdwatching: Delight in the melodious chirping and vibrant plumage of many bird species inhabiting the rainforest, from the iconic macaws and toucans to the diminutive hummingbirds and colorful parrots.
  • Fishing: Experience the thrill of piranha fishing or engage in catch-and-release fishing excursions, where you can interact with the diverse aquatic life of the Amazon while contributing to sustainable fishing practices.
  • Canopy Walks: Embark on a thrilling canopy walk adventure, ascending into the upper reaches of the rainforest to gain a bird's-eye view of the verdant canopy and spot elusive wildlife hidden amidst the treetops.
  • Relaxation and Reflection: Take moments to unwind amidst the tranquility of the rainforest, allowing yourself to connect with nature and reflect on the profound beauty and serenity of the pristine wilderness surrounding you.
  • Mountain Gorillas: Trips to the rainforests of Africa — Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo — may bring you up close and personal with a mountain gorilla, the largest living primate on earth. If you're lucky, you'll spot the male troop leader, the silverback.
  • Blue Morpho Butterfly: Look for these brilliant, blue-winged beauties, marked by their eyespots on the underside of their wings, intended to stave off predators.
  • Okapi: Since it's a master of camouflage, you might miss the okapi, the closest living relative to a giraffe. Located in the tropical forest of Ituri in Central Africa, it's recognizable by its striped hindquarters and brown hide.
  • Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth: Who doesn't want to see a sloth? Spot the slow-moving cutie up in the trees. Notice the slight green tinge on its fur — it grows on the sloth's coat because it moves so slowly!
  • Jaguar: They're rare to glimpse in the world's rainforests, but they're there. Hidden by their spotted coats in bushes and trees, the jaguars prey on the rainforests, armadillos, capybara, tapir, fish, birds, and turtles.
  • Scarlet Macaw: Try photographing this striking, large parrot, recognizable by its bright red, blue, and yellow plumage and feathers.
  • Capybara: ROUS, anyone? This unusually large rodent is, in fact, the largest rodent on earth, more than 100 pounds and two feet tall. It can hold its breath for up to five minutes, so be patient if you're looking for one in a body of water.
  • Black Howler Monkey: Listen for the unmistakable howl of this iconic rainforest monkey, which can be heard up to two miles away.
  • Sulawesi Bear Cuscus: Predominantly found on the island of Sulawesi in the rainforests of Indonesia, this marsupial isn't really a bear at all. It's so named for its bear-like fur, which is thick and dark, but like other marsupials, it carries its young in a belly pouch.
  • Logging: The demand worldwide for tropical hardwoods led to increased (often illegal) logging activity in some of the world's most beautiful rainforests. As attractive as a Brazilian rosewood might be in one's home, is it worth putting one of the most spectacular ecosystems at serious risk?
  • Cattle Grazing: Once rainforest areas are logged or burned, cleared land is sold to farmers for cattle racing, which leads to significant leaps in carbon emissions.
  • Soya Plantations. Much of the world's livestock population ingests a high-protein plant called soya. Most of the world's soya is grown in South America, where rainforests have existed in the past.
  • Palm Oil: Valuable rainforests are harvested to grow the oil palm plant, a valuable cash crop, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. When the rainforests are burned, the peatland below the surface is also burned. The peatlands in Indonesia alone contribute to 4% of the Earth's greenhouse gasses.
  • Mining: Mineral and gold deposits lie beneath the world's most beautiful rainforests. Once the underground mining infrastructure is created, loggers and poachers gain access to the area illegally.
  • Although many acres of rainforest are now protected by law, such as in Indonesia, rainforests are constantly threatened with being opened for mineral exploration, such as the Brazilian rainforests, home to the world's largest iron ore mine.
  • Hydroelectricity: While it hardly seems fair, hydroelectricity, one of our renewable energy resources, is partly to blame for the deforestation of the rainforests. When hydroelectric dams were built after 2006 in Brazil, major flooding harmed wildlife and the local ecosystem.
  • Jungle environments are often humid, leading to lens fogging. Keep a lens cloth handy to wipe away moisture and ensure clear shots.
  • A soft and durable strap will prevent irritation during long treks as you navigate through humid rainforests.
  • Understanding species habits and habitats enhances your chances of capturing unique wildlife moments. Consult with your tour guide for insights on optimal photography spots and timing.
  • Capture intricate details of plant life with a dedicated macro lens, elevating your nature photography to new levels of creativity.
  • Wildlife photography requires patience and respect for natural rhythms. Choose tours with flexible schedules to revisit locations at different times, increasing your chances of capturing elusive species.
  • While wildlife is the focus, including people in your photos adds depth and context to your jungle journey. Capture meaningful portraits and interactions with local tribes for a richer storytelling experience.

Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

How to Visit Amazon Jungle Peru – Everything You Need to Know

The Amazon Rainforest, often called the Amazon Jungle, is the largest rainforest on Earth.

It spans multiple countries in South America, including Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Hi, we’re Rach & Marty!

We’ve visited every country in the world and want to help you get the most out of your travels!

Visiting the Amazon Jungle had been on our bucket list for quite some time, so after spending the best 2 days in Lima , we arranged a side trip to the Amazon Jungle Peru.

To help you plan a visit to the Amazon, I’ve compiled this guide that includes our best travel tips, prices and details on visiting the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

Table of Contents

The Best Time to Go

Exploring the Amazon Rainforest is a year-round possibility, given its consistent weather conditions throughout the seasons. Anticipate warm, rainy, and humid weather, regardless of the time of year.

The wet season spans from January to June, featuring temperatures ranging from 23 to 30ºC (73 to 86ºF). Daily showers are a common occurrence, sometimes with substantial intensity.

wet weather raincoat amazon jungle peru

However, it’s important to note that the higher humidity during this period results in more mosquitoes.

The dry season, from July to December, includes the latter half of the year. During this period, temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC (78 to 104ºF). While there is less rain, occasional heavy showers can still occur. Reduced rainfall results in a drier atmosphere in the jungle and lower river levels.

This creates advantageous conditions for exploration on foot and provides an excellent chance to spot caimans as they contend for diminished food supplies.

The most popular time to visit the Amazon is in July and August. The height of water in the jungle is reasonable, and you have a higher chance of spotting more wildlife.

Where to Go And How to Get There

Two notable areas in the Peruvian Amazon jungle are popular for ecotourism and wildlife experiences.

  • Iquitos, the largest city along the Amazon River in the Peru jungle, is the northern gateway to the Peruvian Amazon basin.
  • Puerto Maldonado is a city in southeastern Peru in the Madre de Dios region, part of the Amazon rainforest. It serves as a gateway to the Tambopata and Manu National Reserves, two of the most biodiverse areas in the Amazon rainforest.

When planning your journey, there’s no rule on choosing the best area of the Amazon to visit, but you should consider your itinerary.

Marty Madre de Dios River Peru Amazon

For instance, diverting to Iquitos might be impractical if you travel to Cusco or Lima. Instead, destinations like Manu National Park or Puerto Maldonado, the entry point to the Amazon rainforest, are closer and logistically make sense.

You can book a flight to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco. You can also take a bus from Cusco to reach these cities to begin your Amazon Jungle experience; this is the most affordable option.

While visiting Lima, we booked this 3 Day Jungle Tour to explore the Tambopata National Reserve.

We started our Amazon Jungle trip by booking a flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado on Skyscanner and found the price of flights to be very reasonable.

The Perfect Itinerary for 2 Days in Lima

How Many Days Do You Need in the Amazon Jungle Peru

We’d recommend setting aside a minimum of three days to visit the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

In this timeframe, you can embark on several excursions that provide a glimpse into the captivating offerings of this region.

The most popular Amazon Jungle packages are 3 or 4 nights

Travelling to a country with a different currency? Avoid ATM transaction fees and pay in local currency with a Wise Card . We love this card; it has saved us so much in fees.

Book A Tour or Travel Independently

We usually travel independently and book logistics as we go; however, after crunching numbers and working out the logistics of getting around in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, we found that it was much easier and more economical for us to book a packaged tour.

There are many tour operators to choose from online. After comparing many options, we decided to book this 3 Day/2 Night Amazon Jungle trip as it’s a Peruvian-owned company with excellent reviews from past guests.

For this complete package, including airport transfers, 2 nights’ accommodation in a bungalow Garden Lodge (with private ensuite facilities), all meals, drinking water, activities and a local guide, we paid approximately USD 350 per person, as we booked a nicer room with private facilities.

Where To Stay

Amazon Garden Lodge bungalow

The overall accommodation style in the Amazon Jungle Peru is typically jungle lodges in various regions.

The choice is up to you whether you opt for a remarkably luxurious or more basic option. You can expect comfortable accommodations in these lodges, usually in twin-share or double cabins with attached ensuite bathrooms.

It’s important to remember that your lodge is in a remote location, so electricity may only be available for specific hours during the day. This was the case with our lodge, so whenever electricity was available, take the opportunity to charge your phone, cameras etc.

The rooms have mosquito nets and fans to ensure a cool and protected night’s sleep.

You may choose a bungalow accommodation with shared bathroom facilities for those travelling on a budget.

Most of the lodges are within a 1-1.5 hour boat ride from Puerto Maldonado Boat Pier.

Accommodation providers usually offer all-inclusive packages that include transfers from Puerto Maldonado airport, accommodation, all meals, and several daily excursions.

Amazon Jungle Lodges in Peru

Numerous jungle lodges are situated along the river, ranging from inexpensive ones with very basic amenities to more stylish lodges with comfortable bungalows.

Here are my top picks for Amazon jungle lodges for varying budgets:

BUDGET: Hacienda Herrera Tambopata – Offering garden views, this property provides accommodation, a garden and a terrace. Pick up and drop off from airport or bus station is provided for free, has to contact property for arrengments. Is a 20 min boat ride from El Triunfo Port to the lodge.

MID-RANGE: Amazon Planet – A true ecolodge within a protected area surrounded by rainforest and wild animals in their natural habitat. Free airport transfers, river transfers, all meals are included. Jungle excursions and adventure activities in the area such as treking, biking, fishing, and boat rides can be arranged.

Full program itineraries are available for an add-on rate. The rooms in Amazon Planet feature private bathrooms and terraces. Breakfast is served daily. The on-site restaurant offers a daily menu and can cater to special diets upon request.

LUXURY: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica – Located in the Peru Amazon Jungle, this hotel features tours to the rainforest, a massage spa overlooking the Madre de Dios forest and rooms with hammocks and balconies. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the rates.

There are eco-friendly bathroom amenities and private bathrooms. The hotel is a 45-minute boat ride from Puerto Maldonado. Cusco is a 25-minute flight away.

What You Can See in the Amazon Jungle in Peru

The Amazon jungle in Peru is like a vast garden with many plants. You’ll find towering trees, like the Ceiba and Kapok, that stand really tall. Some trees, like the rubber tree, have been essential for making rubber.

There are plants that people have used for medicine for a long time, like the Cinchona tree, which helps treat malaria, and the Cat’s Claw, which indigenous communities have used traditionally.

On the trees, you’ll see colourful plants called bromeliads and orchids. Palms, like the Açaí and Assai, give us tasty fruits.

Vines and climbers, such as the vanilla orchid and passionflower, make the forest look even more beautiful. All these plants create a rich and amazing environment in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

monkey island Amazon Jungle Peru

The most commonly seen animals in the Amazon jungle are monkeys (squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys), caimans, sloths, frogs, tarantulas, piranhas, and birds such as herons, and the hoatzin (stink bird).

If you’re fortunate, you may see the endangered giant otter.

Of course, the frequency and proximity of wildlife sightings often depend on luck when exploring the Amazon Jungle.

Nonetheless, it remains a fantastic destination with ample opportunities to encounter and observe various forms of wildlife.

Activities in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle

With its distinctive geography and captivating flora and fauna, the Amazon Jungle in Peru offers some incredible places to visit and activities to engage in.

Here are some of the best ways to explore and appreciate this region and its wonders.

Jungle Walk: Take a trek through the rainforest accompanied by your guide, who will showcase and educate you about a diverse array of exotic plants and wildlife.

A jungle walk in Tambopata National Reserve

Go Kayaking on the River: Explore the calm waters of small rivers and lakes with a kayak, offering opportunities to observe caimans and various birds.

Go Fishing: Drop in a line and see if you can catch dinner! Don’t expect to catch a large fish, but it’s a fun activity, and you can enjoy a spot of birdwatching at the same time.

Discover Lake Sandoval: Visit Lake Sandoval, which is located in the Tambopata National Reserve. Hike 3 km through the park to reach the shores of Lake Sandoval.

Ride on a paddle boat on the lake and look for birds such as hoatzins, monkeys, and various flora. This activity was a real highlight of our trip to the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

What to Pack for Amazon Jungle in Peru

We recommend packing some lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, and you will need a waterproof jacket (or poncho ); plus, it’s worth considering waterproof pants .

TIP: Dress in light, neutral colours to avoid mosquitoes.

Trousers and long sleeves are necessary when taking jungle walks to protect yourself from mosquitoes and spikey plants.

Add the following items to your packing list:

  • A head torch for night walks through the jungle.
  • Binoculars for a closer look at the Amazon wildlife.
  • A good power bank to charge your electronics, as electricity is limited.
  • Mosquito repellent is essential whether you travel in the wet or dry season.
  • Practical walking or trekking shoes , although rubber gumboots are usually provided.
  • A wide-brimmed hat to protect your head from the sun during river cruises.
  • Sunscreen – it gets scorching in the Amazon Jungle.
  • A reusable water bottle to keep hydrated. Your accommodation provider will provide drinking water during your stay.
  • A good book – View our recommendations for great travel books .

Everything you need to know about visiting the Amazon

An Intrepid Travel trip to the Peruvian Amazon

Spanning a mind-blowing 5.5 million square kilometres, the Amazon is the largest rain forest on the face of the Earth.

This untamed wilderness is home to as many as 40,000 species of plant, several thousand species of birds, over four hundred mammals and 2.5 million different insects.

That handful of numbers alone is probably enough to make you feel overwhelmed! To help ease your mind, I’ve compiled all the information you need so that you can start planning your Amazon trip today.

The best time to go

A submerged area of the Amazon in Ecuador

Fotos593/Shutterstock

In truth, the Amazon jungle can be explored all year round. Even in spite of its enormity, the weather conditions here don’t really vary between seasons – expect it to be warm, rainy and humid.

January to June marks the wet season, with temperatures sitting between 23 and 30ºC (that’s 73 to 86ºF). Throughout this half of the year, daily showers are common and can sometimes be heavy. Increased rainfall makes the rain forest feel cooler and the river levels higher. This makes accessing the river easier and swimming more plausible. It’s also worth mentioning that the greater humidity means there are more mosquitos about.

The second half of the year, July to December, marks the dry season. During this time temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC (or 78 to 104ºF) and although there’s less rain, heavy showers are still not unheard of. Decreased rainfall makes jungle feel drier and the river levels lower. This makes exploring on foot easier and offers a great opportunity to spot caimans as they compete for shorter food supplies.

Getting there

A boat travelling down the Amazon river

The vast rainforest spans nine different South American countries including Peru , Colombia , Ecuador and Bolivia – although it’s most prominent in Brazil .

Planning to visit the Peruvian Amazon? Flights can be arranged into Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado from Cusco. Hoping to experience the Brazilian Amazon? Flying into Manaus in the north is your best option. If it’s the Ecuadorian Amazon you’re after, then you can take a bus from Quito into Tena City (five hours) where you can hop in a pickup truck. Or, if you’re eager to explore the Bolivian Amazon, fly from La Paz to Rurrenabaque (around 45 minutes) and then ride a motor-boat upriver to Madidi.

Joining a short, escorted, group tour is an easy way to escape the trouble of organisation!

What you can see

Tucked in a tree in the Amazon sits an emperor tamarin

Will Howe/Shutterstock

The Amazon Rainforest houses 10% of the planet’s known species, so there’s plenty for wildlife enthusiasts to get excited about. Hiding high in the canopy you might spot slow-moving sloths and all manner of monkeys including howler, spider, tamarin, capuchin and squirrel – to name but a few. Bring along your binoculars too for a closer look at brightly-billed toucans and scarlet macaws.

Lurking on the rainforest floor and on the leaves of lower lying plants you might see sinister-looking snakes such as green anacondas, boa constrictors and eyelash vipers. Also, look out for tiny poisonous dart frogs and cleverly camouflaged insects like the leaf-mimic katydid and moss-mimic stick insect.

Living on the river banks you might find capybara families playing, caimans looking for their next meal and tapirs nibbling on low-hanging branches. Whilst in its murky waters, you may see pink river dolphins coming up for air and giant otters tucking into their fish suppers.

LOVE WILDLIFE? CHECK OUT INTREPID TRAVEL’S FULL RANGE OF ANIMAL-FILLED TOURS

If you’re more of a plant person, the Amazon offers up lots for green-fingered explorers too. Some of the most fascinating and unusual species include giant water lilies (or Victoria Amazonica), spaghetti passion flowers and monkey brush vines. It’s a brilliant destination for tree lovers too. You won’t be able to walk through the jungle without coming across the humungous roots of the kapok tree. These giants can reach over 60 metres in height!

And, for the foodies amongst us, you’ll also be able to spot the plants that some of our favourite foodstuffs come from including coffee, cacao and bananas.

Where you’ll stay

Comfortable jungle lodge accommodation in the Amazon

Photo captured by Barbara Glanz

The most prominent style of accommodation you’ll come across in the Amazon is jungle lodges, regardless of which section you’re visiting. And whilst you can get some incredibly luxury or extremely basic ones, most sit around the 3-star mark. In these lodges, you’ll usually stay in a comfortable twin share or double cabin with an ensuite bathroom. Rooms will be kitted out with mosquito nets and a fan to keep you cool and protected at night.

Activities on offer

Jungle walkers in the Peruvian Amazon

During your time in the Amazon, the days will be filled by jungle walks and river cruises. These will likely happen at varying times each day to give you an insight into how your surroundings can change. On some nights you’ll have the option to take part in an after-dark jungle walk, offering you the opportunity to spot some nocturnal animals. But if you’re not keen, no worries, you can choose to simply kick back in a hammock. Bear in mind that the day’s schedule can change depending on the weather. Other activities that are sometimes available include rafting, canoeing and swimming.

South east asia jungle tour reviews.

It was everything I imagine it will be and more. Our guide for the first part of the tour in Sarawak was amazing. The guide for Sabah was newish to guiding and you can tell. But overall great trip!
Two comments 1. To add the Urang Hutan reservation in Kuching to the itinerary 2. The hotel in Bilit was not up to par, so if there are other options, it is worthwhile to check
Expensive but finally it was totally worth it. This day was one of the best we spend in vietnam. Our guide, Henry was so nice and so funny we had such a nice time with this crazy guy !! Also, the food was so good. We highly recommend this trip. We toured Paradise Cave, absolutely beautiful cavern with great cave formations, 8 Lady Cave (more of a shrine than a cave) and the Hang Tra Ang cave, a swim into a interesting cave. All was great

Introduction

We offer jungle lodge tours to Maçarico. Maçarico is located only 90 kilometers from Manaus. You can choose between two to five days of adventure.

You will stay in the jungle lodge at night and do trips to the jungle during the day. You will get to experience some amazing Amazon nature and learn many things about the plants and animals of the Amazon river and rainforest.

Your tour always starts and ends in Manaus. We pick you up at your hotel in Manaus, on the morning of your first tour day. From here all transportation is included. After the tour, we bring you back to your hotel. If you want to be dropped off at another location, like for example the airport, that’s no problem at all.

Payment on our website is completely secure and encrypted by our payment provider. They use HTTPS secure connections and AES-256 encryption to ensure your data is protected. Your payment is non-refundable.

If you have any questions about the tour, please contact us on WhatsApp, through the icon on this page, or send an email to [email protected]. We are always at your service.

You get picked up at 8 a.m. at your hotel and from there we go to the Seasa Port where we´ll get on board the speed boat that will cross us to the other side of the amazon river. At some point, the captain will stop at the amazing Meeting Of The Waters for pictures and information will be given about this phenomenon that happens between the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões.

After we cross the Rio Solimões (Amazon river) we arrive at a town called Careiro da Várzea. From Careiro´s town, we drive on a kombi van for about an hour on the highway BR319 to arrive at the Mamori area where we´ll get onboard again on a speedboat to reach our lodge around 11:30 a.m.

At noon we’ll have lunch. Afterward, you have two hours to get to know the lodge, relax, and swim in the amazon river. The activities start around 2 p.m. We sail out on indigenous wooden canoes for animals and bird spotting where you might get the chance to see sloths, monkeys, and river dolphins (botos).

We´ll also go out to fish piranhas and if you like it we´ll prepare it for dinner for you. After we teach how to catch piranhas we´ll watch the beautiful amazonian sunset. We will return to the lodge around 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

After dinner, we´ll sail out to find and catch a wild caiman. The guide will catch the caiman and provide you with information about these prehistoric animals. After that, the guide will put it back in the water. He won´t hurt the caiman at any point. After this intense night activity, we will return back to the lodge to rest for the next day.

tour to jungle

At 5:30 a.m. we start off the day by watching the amazonian sunrise. After the sunrise, we come back to the lodge to have a delicious traditional amazonian breakfast at 7 a.m. At 8 a.m. we´ll take you on a jungle trek. We´ll drive for 30 minutes until we arrive at the starting point of our jungle hiking.

We´ll be hiking from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. During the hike, the guide will give you explanations about the flora and fauna of the Amazon jungle. You will learn all about the pharmaceutical trees, leaves, vines, and a lot more of what nature can give us. There is a good chance to see monkeys, sloths, snakes, tarantula spiders, dart frogs, and other interesting animals and insects of the amazon jungle.

We´ll go back to the lodge for lunch which will be served at noon. After lunch, you will have time to prepare yourself to leave the lodge at 2:00 p.m. for our next adventure.

We´ll drive for 40 minutes until a place in the jungle where we are going to set up our jungle camp. We will prepare the hammocks and mosquito nets for the night. After we have set our camp we´ll prepare our dinner. For vegetarians, there are a lot of different fruits and vegetables in the jungle that are eatable and good tasting. If you would like chicken or rice we´ll bring it with us from the lodge, but we recommend the amazonian way and catch our own fish with spears. You can choose whatever option you prefer.

We will make an open campfire in the jungle where we will make all our food. After dinner, we will look at the stars and tell stories about the amazonian people and our culture. This night we will sleep outside in the jungle. Prepare yourself for one of the most amazing nights of your lifetime.

tour to jungle

We’ll have breakfast at 8 a.m. After breakfast, we’ll leave our camp to go visit one of the many native villages of the Amazon jungle. We’ll learn about their way of living and the guide will explain how these people live, grow crops, and feed their families. For example, the manioc root, which they use to produce a flour called Farinha.

You will learn about a culture that thrives without electricity and any other kind of luxury. For many, it´s an eye-opener to experience how it really is to live in the Amazon jungle. We´ll have lunch together with the native people. After lunch, we will go out again to spot animals in small canoes for some of the animals that usually walk on the riverbanks.

We´ll use small canoes and paddles to try and make as little noise as possible to not scare off the animals. We will also do bird watching, and spend time enjoying the sunset. After sunset, we will return back to the native community.

At night we will go out spearfishing together with the natives. We will also try to spot some poisonous snakes in the trees. After this night’s activity, we will return back to the native house where we are going to have dinner. We will eat the fish that we caught during our spearfishing. This night we´ll be sleeping in the house of the native family with hammocks and mosquito nets.

tour to jungle

We get up at 7 a.m. to have breakfast. After breakfast we will leave the native house for our last hiking or canoeing, depending on the season. If it is the dry season we will do a hike in the floating jungle. If it is the rainy season we will visit the same floating jungle by canoes. There is a big chance to see a boa constrictor floating in the jungle. After the hike/canoe in the wetlands, we will return back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, you will have time to relax and prepare your stuff to leave at 2 p.m. We will return back to Manaus the same way we came. We will arrive back in Manaus at 4 p.m. and our driver will take you from the Seasa Port back to your hotel and that is the end of our tour.

God! That was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life! I will always dream of the “hunting” of the Caymans during the night, where we could see the stars and the planets in the sky. Also, the night camping was unbelievable. Our guide Sami was a real survivor of the jungle and a really gifted man. So if you are thinking about taking a trip to the Amazon, I suggest Amazon Deep Jungle Tours 100%!!!

tour to jungle

This was a great trip, where we got to witness what living in the Amazon was like. Juma was our guide, and knowledgeable about all the ways of living in the Amazon. He led us on the nature hike, pirana fishing, dolphin watching, and caiman catching. It was a very unique experience to sleep outside in a hammock and hear all the numerous sounds of Amazonian animals at night. Overall, a great trip to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil!

tour to jungle

I will never forget the magnificent trip to the Amazon. We camped in the jungle and learned many survival techniques in the jungle with the indigenous people. We had two encounters with jaguars, one spotted and one rare black jaguar. It was all wonderful and I have to thank everyone who made this tour come true. Super recommended to my friends looking for an adventure in the jungle.

tour to jungle

I went on the adventure tour in Maraa and I would highly recommend it. It was an unbelievable experience! The team that was with me was the best. Samir knows everything about animals and plants. Mikaias’ skills are absolutely mental! He can spear a fish in the water at night from 3 meters away! Really impressive! If you want to experience a real slice of life in the jungle you should definitely go through this company. I made memories that I will cherish forever.

tour to jungle

We had an amazing experience with Amazon Deep Jungle Tours. The guides were excellent, and what we saw and experienced was great, piranha fishing, fishing, and hunting, canoeing, hiking through the forest with experienced explanations, traveling the river by day and night, camping in a great spot, swimming, wildlife, crocodile spotting. Amazon is not to be taken lightly. It is a place that requires a lot of respect and good guidance. The guys did a great job on that.

I went on the adventure tour in Maraa and I would highly recommend. It was an unbelievable experience! The team that was with me was the best. We were like a little family for a week and spent an amazing time together. Those guys were awesome. Best experience EVER. I think this may well be the most enthusiastic I have ever felt about an organised trip! 5 out of 5 stars is a huge understatement! We were three girls in our 20s who spent quite a while trying to find the amazon tour that was perfect for us, this one well and truly exceeded our expectations!

First gig at O2 Brixton (as well as first time seeing Jungle live) and we were blown away by the venue as well as by the quality of the sound. To be honest, I was a bit sceptical about seeing Jungle transpose their unique style in a live setting; however, I would give their effort a solid 8.5 / 10. The show began with a kid breakdancing to one of the song's album and this really put the crowd in a great mood - something the band was able to sustain throughout most the show. Points taken off the overall score mainly due to two things:

1) The difficulty in keeping a high energy level through some of their more subdued track that necessitate the group to remain mostly static behind their instruments

2) A few hiccups here and there - starting "Drops" on the wrong key, then struggling to get it back on track as well as the challenges of staying tight through a few of the more complex numbers

Overall though, a great evening, with much dancing despite being in the Circle (seated area). Busy Earnin was the highlight - and who can hold anything against a band that finishes off their set with confetti cannons spewing gold and silver glitter all over the place?!

Will look to catching them live again for sure!

Fan-tastic!!!!

Really looked forward to this event. More excited even than when we saw Will Smith at Blackpool if that was possible (but that was because even until he came on I couldnt quite believe it was happening, I mean - Will Smith in Blackpool, nahhh).

Anyway, Jungle at The Invisible Wind factory.

I wasnt disappointed. I LOVE Jungle. They are mesmerising to watch. Sounded perfect every song. The moment they start playing their opening riffs the whole crowd are pumped. Venue was superb, unique. Perfect for this type of gig. First time we’d been but I would definitely go again.

If I could only see one band from now on though, it would be these folks. Felt very intimate, like they’re playing to you! Let me be clear, Jungle were Ay-mazing! It was a truly memorable experience. My advice: 1) see Jungle; 2) go to a gig at TIWF; 3) if possible, go see a Jungle gig at TIWF.

Jungle is a fairly new band on the scene. From their head nodding basslines to their funky rhythm, there's nothing to dislike about them. I love listening to them on my phone but watching them live is a completely different experience. The energy they produced on stage shook the crowd like a live wire. I started dancing when they came out and didn't stop until they ended. There wasn't much interaction with the crowd but that was because they were pulling out hit after hit from their amazing album. I was ik euphoria for the whole show. My expectations were met. I left a happy man and would love to see them again.

Just OK. Don't get me wrong, I love Jungle and their debut album. But their concert à la Cigale in Paris was just good enough and somehow disappointing. First we wait one hour after the opening before their dared to show on stage. Then they sounded like they were just rehearsing. The lead vocal has so much soul in his voice that I would have enjoyed to feel it in the acting of the band too. But I did not felt the vibe. To me, it was a bit too clean: no improvisation or so little, not much engagement neither. Maybe it is just me, or this is what you get when you make your audience wait too much.

Good show. Band were good and sounded excellent. However the venue was piss poor. Awful place to see a band. 2/3 of the viewing space is above the stage, which sounds great until you realise that only the people at the front can see - everyone else is blocked from view. Also it took over an hour to get into the show as the door staff and management team at Pryzm were frighteningly inefficient. I have no idea what they were going but we queued for an hour and missed the first 30 minutes. Woeful - will not be attending a gig at New Slang in Pryzm again. Awful experience

The show was amazing... So were the artists! I expected the performance to be great when I was buying the tix, but I didn't expected it to be THAT great. I had a fantastic time on the dancefloor with my friends, the crowd was SUPER nice, SUPERfancy and SUPERpolite.

For me, the greatest joy at the shows is to see musicians to enjoy themselves while performing... And how the band acted on scene was awesome. You can literally see that the guys loved EVERY chord they've made for the audience.

10/10, would totally revisit

Jungle has a pretty cool sound and is super funky but I have to admit I was very skeptical and wasn't sure if they were going to deliver live - Boy was I wrong! The energy was great, them, the band and the back up singers! Jungle is from London and are described as modern soul but they are more than that. You can hear the 70's funk inspiration - perfect for a good concert with loads of dancing. They played at a medium sized venue and thet carried themselves pretty well. I recommend a Jungle concert to anyone :)

I've never seen them in concert. Only bcus they haven't made their way to my city. I guarantee that I'm their #1 FAN in ST. LOUIS, MO!!! I really hope they make it to the midwest in 2020. I will definitely be in attendance. I shared their videos with our main Entertainment Report here in STL. He's jamming to them as I type.

Next Tour Schedule should include - St. Louis, MO - great venues - The Pageant, Delmar Hall or The Ready Room.

MIND. BLOWING. What a great performance by this band. I have been a huge fan of them and they really did not disappoint, I read many reviews of their concerts and everyone said they are good live so my expectations were pretty high. One thing is listening to them on iMusic but another is seeing them live, it was unbelievable, 10/10 flew all the way from Atlanta to Washington to see them and it was totally worth it.

victor-pacheco-1’s profile image

Amazing sound quality (congrats to the sound guys), and incredibly tight band. Voices are top notch. Great energy. Don't remember seeing the Germans (if you excuse me the stereotypical comment) on the crowd dancing so much since a while! Short (they only have an album after all), but loads of fun! 10/10 would see again.

Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

tour to jungle

Home » Things to do » Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

The jungles, swamps, and mangroves of Costa Rica are awe-inspiring – no matter how many times you’ve seen them. Constant sunlight, abundant rains, and the high temperatures are a recipe for biological diversity. These complex biological ecosystems contain dense foliage, massive trees, and more than half of all the living things known to man. A trip down the mangrove canals will reveal a surprising number of wading birds (they can gather in flocks up to the thousands), curious iguanas and monkeys keeping watch from tree limbs, and the occasional tapir pushing through the undergrowth.

Costa Rica Jungle Day Tours:

Despite the thick undergrowth of a jungle, hiking tours are a great way to get up close and personal with nature. Naturalist guides are strongly recommended in order to spot the elusive wildlife and learn about the complicated relationships between the flora and fauna of the Costa Rica jungle. A jungle kayak or cruising adventure is another way to discover the untouched beauty of Costa Rica. Kayaking is a fantastic way to reach some of the most remote and wild mangrove environments. Without a motor, travelers might get to spot some of the more elusive tropical creatures.

Corcovado National Park Tour, Osa Peninsula

Best Jungle and Mangrove Tours in Costa Rica

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is the largest lowland rainforest in Central America and the most remote rainforest in Costa Rica. The park covers nearly half of the entire Osa Peninsula and is home to exotic species such as scarlet macaws, all 4 Costa Rican monkey species, and the endangered jaguar. Nearly every jungle lodge in and around Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez can book a guided day tour to Corcovado. Hike along the shoreline or right into the jungle to explore the most remote tropical forest in the country.

Tarcoles River Cruise, Central Pacific Coast

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

One of our most popular adventures brings you to the Tarcoles River within Carara National Park on the Central Pacific Coast , home to some of the largest populations of crocodiles in the world! Male crocodiles can weight up to a ton and reach 20 feet in length! While cruising along the Tarcoles River, you will see them swimming or sunbathing on the river banks. Available as an en route tour from Arenal Volcano to Manuel Antonio, this tour is a great opportunity to get (not too) close to these immense creatures while continuing on your exploration of Costa Rica. Another option is to simply stop off at the famous Crocodile Bridge over the Tarcoles River to see the wild crocodiles for a quick stop off!

Damas Island Estuary Kayak or Boat Tour, Manuel Antonio

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Damas Island Estuary is located outside  Manuel Antonio National Park  and the town of Quepos. From crocodiles and sloths to monkeys and iguanas, these mangrove waterways are teeming with wildlife like crocodiles, herons, sloths, monkeys, and more! A professional naturalist guide will lead you through the estuary by boat or kayak. Following your tour, enjoy a traditionally prepared Costa Rican meal. Tours are available during the day and in the evenings.

Tamarindo Estuary Kayaking Tour, Guanacaste

Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Grande, the Playa Grande Estuary empties into the bay of Tamarindo. A professional naturalist will guide you through the unique estuary ecosystem, pointing out the highlights and wildlife in the area. This tour can be done in single or double kayaks. An hour into your adventure, grab a snack on the riverbank.

Costa Rica Jungle Overnights:

One of the best ways to explore all of the beauty of Costa Rica is a few nights stay at one of the country’s jungle lodges. Several of the eco-lodges in our collection are accessible only via boat or flight. This makes reaching your destination an adventure in itself. See the country from an aerial angle on a domestic flight and/or take a boat to your destination looking for wildlife!

Osa Peninsula

5 Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours

Peruse the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve on the remote Osa Peninsula by boat or kayak through dense jungle estuaries.

Many jungle lodges are located on or near the remote Osa Peninsula – the southwesternmost point of Costa Rica which also happens to contain one of the largest remaining tracts of tropical rainforest in Central America. This important region is home to literally hundreds of species, many endangered and is the perfect place for explorations into untouched jungles and rainforest. The Diquis Delta near Drake Bay, the Sierpe River Mouth  of the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve, and the G0lfo Dulce  are mangrove highlights of the region. Boat transportation down-estuary waterways to the lodges of Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula introduce guests to the huge variety of ecosystems that can be found, and it’s an extra chance for wildlife watching. Bird-lovers, in particular, should check out the Osa Peninsula. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica for bird-watching and is one of the richest and most diverse tropical zones in the world.

A professional naturalist guide will point out the exotic flora and fauna of the area from the comfort of a boat with a quiet motor. Be your own captain and pilot your own speedboat in Cancun!

With our unique and unforgettable tour, you can take the wheel and become the captain of your own speedboat for a day. The most popular activity in Cancun is the Jungle Tour Adventure®. It is a guided  speedboat and snorkeling tour  that gives you an adrenaline rush.

The adventure begins at our dock on Boulevard Kukulkan in the Hotel Zone. You will drive at full speed (approx. 50 km/hr.) while following one of our expertly trained guides who will show you the best of both worlds: the thrill of being on a speedboat in the beautiful Caribbean Sea and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters and turquoise waters of Cancun on the Yucatan peninsula.

You will feel safe and confident knowing that you have a qualified local guide who will show you the wildlife of the area while you admire the beauty of the mangrove canals of the Nichupté Lagoon.

Our snorkeling and speed boat tour also includes snorkeling in the beautiful shallow water coral reef of Punta Nizuc, also called “The Great Mayan Reef”. This is where part of the MUSA underwater museum gallery is located (advanced swimmers only), and you’ll be surrounded by many different types of fish.

In our  mangrove speedboat tour , we also offer a different way to enjoy speedboats! You will get to drive your speedboat without snorkeling to the northern part of the Nichupté lagoon, passing through isolated areas and beautiful views of the lagoon.

If you are looking for more things to do in Cancun, we have another starting point inside La Isla Shopping Village, the best shopping center in Cancun. You’ll do the same  speedboat and snorkel leaving from Plaza La Isla , but with the added benefit of leaving and returning to the mall, where you can enjoy a day of shopping or eat at one of the mall’s restaurants, as well as experience a wide variety of other water sports like jetpack, seabreacher, flyboard, and more!

10 of the best things to do in Antigua, from jungle adventures to the most beautiful beaches

A ntigua is renowned for its coastline. This Caribbean island – one ‘half’ of the country of Antigua and Barbuda – offers a beach for every day of the year.

And while you may need weeks to explore all of these, you’d want far longer to fully explore Antigua . The island contains a range of activities that belies its modest size, from exploring colonial towns to kayaking around Caribbean islets.

English Harbour, Nelson’s Dockyard and the capital provide daytime entetainment, nightlife and opportunities to learn about this captivating country. A day trip to Barbuda is always an option – as is lying on a picture-perfect beach – but be sure to see inland too, from the island’s thick rainforest to the sweeping views available from Shirley Heights.

A little research will go a long way on this island, so here’s a selection of the best things to do when you visit.

Tour the capital

St John’s has long been a popular destination for Caribbean cruises , but nowadays this colourful capital is more than just a brief stop-off point. Tropical vegetation covers the hills that climb up from the harbour, with a number of charming Caribbean buildings scattered throughout.

The capital is home to many of Antigua’s main heritage sites, including the ruins of 18th-century British forts (Fort Barrington and Fort James), the city’s cathedral and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Two of the city’s two most popular neighbourhoods, Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, are known for their colourful architecture, local vendors and some of the island’s best shops and restaurants. They remain two of the most characterful places in the city despite occasionally being filled with cruise passengers.

There are a handful of beaches near the capital that offer both relaxation and water sports (more on them below), and those looking for a little more activity can visit the Cedar Valley golf club, home to the island’s only 18-hole championship course.

Catch a sunset at Shirley Heights

Hike up to Shirley Heights for one of the best views in the country. This old military viewpoint stands over Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour, and looks out onto azure waters as far as the neighbouring islands of Guadeloupe and Montserrat. Though it stands just 150 metres above sea level, the hike to the top is reasonably challenging, and there are taxis to take less adventurous visitors to the top. Visit on Sunday to see the area at its most atmospheric, when vendors sell food and rum and bands play as the sun goes down.

Discover the island’s beaches

It pays to do some research when visiting an island that has a different beach for each day of the year. Depending on where you base yourself, there may be nearby town beaches, large bays or secluded coves, but considering the size of the island, you’ll likely be able to visit a few different coastlines during your trip.

Unlike those in other popular destinations, Antigua’s ‘fully equipped’ beaches still provide an abundance of natural beauty alongside their variety of restaurants, bars and water sports. Dickenson Bay, Long Bay, Fort James Beach and Hawksbill have all the amenities dotted along their sands, but those who crave remoteness and real peace should head to Half Moon Bay, Rendezvous Bay or Ffryes Beach to discover some of the most beautiful places on the island.

Take a day trip to Barbuda

Antigua lies just 90 minutes away by boat from the other part of the country. The two islands are separated by around 30 miles of Atlantic Ocean, and tourists can take a quick journey between the two with round trips that cost about £70 (these usually leave early morning, around 7am, and return mid-afternoon).

Barbuda is far smaller than Antigua but still boasts enough to fill a day trip, from the coral sands of Pink Sand Beach to the 170 bird species in the Codrington Lagoon. Notable spots include the only major settlement, Codrington, and the sparkling white sands of Princess Diana Beach, named so because of the late royal’s love of holidaying there.

See Nelson’s Dockyard National Park

This national park is one of the main landmarks in Antigua, and is home to several of its highlights, from the aforementioned Shirley Heights to the annual Antigua Sailing Week. It stretches across the island’s southern coastline, offering 12 miles of hiking trails, Unesco-listed Georgian buildings and the charming, often busy, waterfront of English Harbour.

As well as offering sweeping views across the water (both at sea level and Shirley Heights), the area is popular for tourists keen to learn about local history (whether that of the island at Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, slavery at 8th of March Project or archaeology at the Rum in the Ruins tour), enjoy a meal with a view or simply stroll around the picturesque grounds.

Visit English Harbour for the Friday fish fry

English Harbour sits across the water from Nelson’s Dockyard, and the two are often visited together as some of Antigua’s main attractions. The ‘harbour’ is actually a small town spread around a natural harbour, and on Friday nights both the Harbour and the Dockyard come alive for ‘Seafood Fridays’, with the most notable event held at the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel in English Harbour. Expect fried conch and grilled lobster alongside live music and free-flowing drinks.

Explore Betty’s Hope and the Devil’s Bridge

Two of the island’s highlights lie close to each other in the east, so it makes sense to explore both within the space of a few hours. You’ll likely arrive at Betty’s Hope first; this former sugar plantation, originally constructed in 1650, is the best preserved of Antigua’s 100 sugar mills, and is now an open-air museum where visitors can learn about the lives of those affected by the slave trade, the history of plantations and the process behind sugar production.

Carry on east to arrive at Devil’s Bridge, part of the eponymous national park and one of Antigua’s most striking natural sites. A mile-long road takes you to the ‘bridge’ itself; a natural limestone arch under which roll the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

See some wildlife

Antigua offers visitors several opportunities to see local wildlife, both in animal sanctuaries and in their in natural habitats. If you prefer to observe animals in their own homes, head first to Stingray City, an area of shallow water near the mainland where the local stingray population has become attuned to interacting with humans. Near Galleon Beach lie the Pillars of Hercules, a rock formation that is home to plenty of turtles that can be seen during snorkelling trips.

If you prefer to stay (mostly) on land, make a journey to Laviscount Island, where giant tortoises, iguanas and macaw parrots are all commonly seen. Families will enjoy the Donkey Sanctuary, where 150 donkeys roam a 43-acre site (visitors can feed, groom and even adopt the animals).

Hike through the inland rainforest

Though Antigua is arguably better know for its coastline than its rainforests, this island is home to a markedly different landscape once you travel inland. As you move away from white sands and azure seas, you’ll be met by tall hills covered in dense vegetation and thick jungle; this environment provides great hiking trails such as those in the Wallings Nature Reserve. Visitors here can join guided walking tours where they can see tropical plants and plenty of local wildlife while learning about the reserve and its nature.

Kayak through mangroves and reefs

Along with the usual water sports and sailing offered on beaches and harbours throughout the island, there is plenty of opportunity to explore Antigua by kayak. You can visit Atlantic coastline, tiny islands and exotic mangroves on a guided tour, with the area around North Sound Marine Park the best place to go. Alongside paddling through reefs and mangroves, you can laze on the beach and even swim or snorkel with turtles as part of the half-day tour.
