The people are friendly and they send me work. I have never had any problems with the people working there. I would recommend this business
Bathrooms are always gross! Needs a serious updating. Maybe after that it'll be more desirable.
Terrible bathrooms, worst I've ever seen on the road. Smelled awful, gas pumps were backed up. Would definitely skip this place.
Sweet relief. Mannequins. A few poor reviews had us scared, but the place ended up serving our needs with no complaints at all! Friendly greeting; clean restroom (except for a few strands of toilet paper on the floor).
Just stopped, the place was under renovation. The restroom had either puke/ poop/urine or all of the above in/on all three of the women's toilets. No ice for drinks. The guy working the counter was nice, probably won't stop there again for a year or more until renovating is done.
ONLY if you're a trucker and, ONLY if you have NO OTHER CHOICE! Traveling through Tennessee, my daughter and I came across 101 Travel Stop. My first impression was that the 101 TS might be closed. This, because of the neglected and dilapidated signage visible from the freeway. In fact, the only thing that clued us in to 101 TS being possibly open was the illuminated gas prices. We exited and proceeded to park. I'm not trying to be overly critical or dramatic when I say this place looks like it would make the perfect setting for a Stephen King or "Tremors" movie... I'm not kidding!! Despite the outward appearance, I was excited about the prospect of finding a nifty item or travel store bargain. Instead, we discovered a disorganized slew of what struck me as a combination of a Dollar General and a thrift store. Low quality, overpriced, unkept, and simply put a hot mess! I browsed a bit at the outdated, overpriced merchandise while my daughter went potty. By the time she returned, I had experienced as much of the 101 TS as I wanted to. I even changed my mind about buying a lottery ticket! (I hope I don't regret that one!!) As we walked outside, my daughter asked if I'd used the restroom. "Here it comes, I thought!" Yup! She said the ladies restroom smelled like a mixture of pee and an overly sweet and strong air freshener! I was glad I held off using the restroom. So, do yourself AND your family a huge favor. If your eastbound and down through Tennessee on your way to Memphis, best skip this truck stop! Live well. Be well. Cheers!
Great stop for locals as well as truck drivers as well they have everything you need from clothing to gives food drinks everything you want under one roof. for truckers they offer a safe place for you to park and rest without interference from anyone they offer showers at a reasonable price great local travel station
christy and mary sue are the best!! the fried mushrooms are divine. great spot to stop and eat.
I stopped here to get a bite not expecting much. What I found was hard- working people, who despite my diet desires, made me a salad!!
Very high priced on out of date shelf products. Oftentimes out of gas, especially during critical times like when the golf areas were hit with hurricanes. Only had Premium gas available for about four weeks. VERY dirty. Restrooms disgusting!
That is the dirtiest bathroom ever, dont don't do it. Place had a particularly bad odor, and restroom was a mess.

Want to find hidden gem restaurants? Follow the business crowd to lunch.
People in suits will lead you to some of the best local restaurants in cities like Seoul and Stockholm.
Welcome to The Upgrade, By The Way’s series on travel hacks and hot takes. See how to submit here.
As a restaurant critic and food writer, it is my job to eat and drink, and I have the Google Maps lists to prove it. For each of the 100-odd cities I’ve visited, I have a pin marking my favorite bakery, cheese shop, noodle place, cocktail bar and, of course, late-night gyros, fish n’ chips and street vendors hawking scallion pancakes.
While I receive a fair share of expert tips from friends, my secret to finding great places to eat is to turn off my phone, go rogue and observe men and women who wear suits to work. For the past 20 years, I’ve had great success following the crowd — more specifically, the business lunch crowd.
On a recent trip to Seoul , I went to the financial district so I could meander away from the tourist-ridden areas of MyeongDong and Gangum, where retail giants and commercial chains rule the streets. I wove in and out of buildings and tracked men and women in business attire as they hurried to lunch.
Having stayed in the city for a week already, I was surprised to find alleyways filled with bars and restaurants that I failed to notice on my self-guided tour of the neighborhood. With the suits’ as my guide, I had an impressive bowl of hand-pulled noodles with a mountain of fresh seafood for under $10. On another day, they led me to a tiny restaurant serving a 130-year old recipe for a delicious soup made from pork bones and served with “sundae” (blood sausages). I am itching to return, and have pinned it in anticipation.
On another lunch outing, I slurped down naengmyeon , cold noodle soup and even found a tiny bakery making a sweet red-bean bun for less than one dollar, something I would have missed if I had my head in my phone.
In Stockholm, the same experience of following men and women in suits has led me to some great discoveries at night, too. In the evening, city workers in Sweden’s capital stream out of offices and straight onto the subway, but if you are lucky, many will venture out to their favorite watering hole for after-work drinks.
The key is to follow small packs of three and observe their body language — if they are friendly toward each other, it means they are out to enjoy the night rather than on a business dinner which can lead you to expensive restaurants.
This is how I found the coziest wine bars, which are slowly replacing the Michelin-starred restaurants that epitomized the high-end New Nordic trend. On my latest visit, I discovered some seriously ambitious Swedish chefs who have grit their teeth in Scandinavia’s finest restaurants and are slowly trying to build a name for themselves with their own restaurants.
Bord , Brutalisten and Triton are just a few discoveries where I enjoyed slurping West Coast Swedish oysters on the half-shell and sipping Swedish solaris while chatting with friendly locals who shared more secrets to their city’s culinary scene like having a bargain deal Michelin-starred lunch at Petri instead of dinner for the same great experience.”
The art of following the business crowd does come with some caveats. You need to have a grasp of the city’s food scene to avoid misdirections to chains and fast-food joints (unless you want to sample that side of local flavor).
You have to remember that lunch hours are short and sweet in cities like Seoul, Tokyo and Zurich; where the work culture is rigid and grueling, many do opt for cheap and cheerful eateries over high-quality eats.
If you enjoy traveling without a guide and still take pleasure in discovering impromptu delights, you won’t be disappointed at whatever you find. Isn’t discovery what travel is all about?

Driving Route 66? Here Are 19 Historic Restaurants Worth a Pit Stop
Posted: May 2, 2024 | Last updated: May 2, 2024
Get Your Kicks
The famous American highway Route 66, which ran all the way from Chicago to Santa Monica, was established in 1926 as car culture was taking over the nation. As more people started using the route for travel, restaurants and attractions along the way became destinations in themselves. Many restaurants and taverns that were opened in the heyday of Route 66 — or even before the route came to be — are still operating today. Here are some of the most interesting and long-lived restaurants worth a stop on the mother road.
1. Roy's Motel and Cafe
Amboy, California
Roy's started as a gas and service station in 1938, an oasis on Route 66 in the Mojave Desert. It soon grew to include a cafe and cabins for overnight rentals, and supported a small community of 700 people in the town. At its peak in the 1950s, it was operating 24 hours a day, but eventually fell into disrepair after Interstate 40 was built in 1972. The entire town — all 950 acres — was sold for $425,000 in 2005, and many buildings have been restored, including the iconic 1959 arrowhead neon sign that's the main attraction. Potable water is a problem here, so the cafe isn't operating, but you can still see the diner's counter, stools, and plenty of history inside.
2. Peggy Sue's 50's Diner
Yermo, California
The decor at Peggy Sue's 50's Diner is kitschy and over-the-top, like many other 50s-style diners. The difference is that Peggy Sue's really did open in 1954. Back then, it had nine counter seats and three booths and was constructed in part with railroad ties and mortar from the nearby railyard. At some point, it was closed, but reopened in the 1980s when it got most of its pop culture memorabilia. After a cheeseburger and shake, head outside to the Diner-saur park and its 10-foot tall metal dinosaur — and King Kong — sculptures.
3. Del Taco
Barstow, California
This is the oldest operating Del Taco location, a fast food chain that started when Ed Hackbarth rebranded his Taco Tia — a Glen Bell restaurant, of Taco Bell fame — and split from the company in 1964. That's not to say that it's the oldest, because the original one was demolished. But you'll find a wall mural of the history of the restaurant in the dining room here, and it's still one of the locations owned and operated by Hackbarth.
Follow us on MSN for more of the content you love.
4. Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket
Willowbrook, Illinois
Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket has a quaint origin story. One day in the 1930s, two local farm women were at a gas station lunch counter and heard the owner talking about how he wanted to sell more food. The entrepreneurial women offered to teach him how to make fried chicken in exchange for buying his chickens from them, and the fried chicken was so popular that the restaurant expanded to a new building next door in 1946, the same one it's in today. Don't miss the corn fritters, fried chicken basket, or classic neon sign.

5. Ted Drewes Frozen Custard
Ted Drewes has been a summertime institution in St. Louis since 1930. It sells frozen custard, a treat that's denser, creamier, and just plain better than ice cream. The Route 66 location opened in 1941, and it still serves sundaes and concretes — that's like an extra-thick blended sundae served upside down — from walk-up windows that have long lines, especially in the summer heat.

6. Midpoint Cafe
Adrian, Texas
Midpoint Cafe got its name because it's the geographic midway point between Chicago and Los Angeles on historic Route 66 — both cities are 1,139 miles away from the cafe. It was built in 1928 and expanded in 1947, and though it has changed hands and names many times over the years, it's been continuously operating. Flo's V-8 Cafe in the animated movie "Cars" was inspired by Midpoint, and you can sign your name on an old Ford parked outside. Don't miss the "ugly crust" pies, named because they might not look beautiful, but they sure taste good.

7. Ariston Cafe
Litchfield, Illinois
One of the longest operating restaurants on Route 66 is Ariston Cafe . The restaurant actually predates Route 66 since it was built on the road's predecessor, Route 4, in 1924. The business was moved to Route 66 in 1935, and it's been there ever since. Today you can order everything from Greek salad and nachos to halibut and patty melts on the menu in a casual setting with white tablecloths.
8. The Berghoff
A legendary restaurant in Chicago, The Berghoff is one of the oldest restaurants on Route 66, and the oldest in Chicago. It first opened in 1898, and while there's been some temporary closures, it's still owned by the same family. During Prohibition, they started brewing root beer, and after Prohibition ended, the bar got Chicago's first ever liquor license which is still on display. You can still stop in and order the restaurant's German specialities, like sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, and apple strudel.

9. Original McDonald's Museum
San Bernardino, California
McDonald's started out as McDonald's Bar-B-Q in 1940 before changing the menu to include burgers and fries and dropping the Bar-B-Q in the name in 1948. The original building is gone, but on the same Route 66 spot is the McDonald's Museum, a homage to the chain's early years before Ray Kroc. It's owned by Juan Pollo Restaurants, a small local chicken chain whose owner has an affinity for fast-food history.
10. Cozy Dog Drive In
Springfield, Illinois
Known almost as much for its adorable hot dog couple logo as its corn dogs, the Cozy Dog Drive In has been in operation since 1949. Original owner Ed Waldmire developed the cozy dog while in the Air Force, and opened the restaurant after being discharged because the corn dogs, with batter that actually stuck to the hot dog, were so popular. They only cost 15 cents originally, and today they'll still only set you back $3.
11. Mitla Cafe
Established in 1937 by Lucia Rodriguez, Mitla Cafe is historic in its own right, but it's more famous for who it inspired. Glen Bell had a hamburger stand across the street from the wildly popular taco-slinging spot, and got his way into the kitchen by befriending the staff. He copied the crispy tacos dorados that people lined up for in his new venture, Taco Bell, in an age-old story of appropriating minority cuisine. The original Milta Cafe is still going strong, run by Lucia's grandson and great grandson, and still serves the infinitely better version of the crisp ground beef taco.
12. Western View Diner and Steakhouse
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Opened in 1937, you'll still feel like you're walking back in time when you step into the Western View . Its retro diner interior isn't original, but it's cozy and welcoming. The mosaic tile on the wall behind the register area is original, though, so keep an eye out for it. The cuisine served includes diner favorites, steaks, New Mexican, and Greek, thanks to a succession of Greek owners. Don't miss the homemade biscuits and gravy, breaded steak fingers, or the savory stuffed sopapilla smothered in red or green chile.
13. Sycamore Inn
Rancho Cucamonga, California
The restaurant now known as the Sycamore Inn has an incredibly long history, dating all the way back to the mid-1800s when an inn and tavern was built by "Uncle" Billy Rubottom on the Santa Fe Trail, which eventually became Route 66. The building that currently stands, along with its name, dates to 1920, and it's been a popular stop for travelers as well as celebrities since. It's an upscale spot that serves steak, oysters, and a large wine list in its chalet-style two-story wooden building.
14. Maid Rite Sandwich Shop
Not to be confused with the Maid-Rite chain, this Maid Rite Sandwich Shop opened in 1924. It claims to have the first drive-thru window in America, and while those claims are hard to verify, it makes sense that it would be located on Route 66. It serves Americana on a bun, but not in the form of a hamburger. Instead, it serves a popular item in this part of the Midwest: the loose meat sandwich. It's like a sloppy joe but without the sauce, so it's more like a sloppy hamburger with mustard, pickle relish, and onions.
15. Rock Cafe
Stroud, Oklahoma
Rock Cafe has survived some serious setbacks since it opened in 1939. In 1999, an F3 tornado ripped through the town and damaged the iconic neon sign. Then in 2008, a fire destroyed everything but the four outer rock walls and Betsy, the 200-pound griddle that had been in the kitchen for 75 years. Betsy was restored — as were the walls — and she's still used to cook up Buffalo burgers and chicken fried steaks. The "Cars" character Sally Carrera was modeled after Rock Cafe's owner, Dawn Welch , a tireless advocate for Route 66.
16. Luna Cafe
Granite City, Illinois
Luna Cafe , a small restaurant that opened in 1924, has an interesting history for one main reason. Al Capone used to meet with local mobsters at the restaurant after driving down Route 66 from Chicago, and it was reportedly one of his favorite hangouts. He may have enjoyed the supposed illegal gambling operation in the basement, or the illicit entertainment that allegedly took place upstairs (legend has it that the red cherry on the sign would light up during those times). Now it's a local dive bar.
17. Emma Jean's Holland Burger Cafe
Victorville, California
Built in 1947, Emma Jean's is named for one owner's wife, who worked at the cafe as a waitress. It’s their son, Brian, who now runs the busy daytime-only diner. He was the one that the menu's "Briancakes" and Brian burger are named after, and that burger, with its thick hamburger patty, roasted green chiles, melted Swiss, and grilled sourdough crusted with Parmesan, is the main draw here. Though it's just made out of cinderblocks, the aqua building is photo-worthy.
18. Jamil's Steakhouse
Oklahoma City
In the early 1900s, Lebanese immigrants came to Oklahoma to work in the oil fields. They brought their cuisine with them, of course, and a number of Lebanese supper clubs popped up, including Jamil's Steakhouse , which opened in 1964. The menu is an interesting mix of expensive steakhouse eats — we're not far from the Oklahoma capitol — Southern, and Lebanese fare. Every entree comes with an assortment of appetizers, including tabouli, hummus, stuffed cabbage, fried bologna, and a baked potato for an incredible mix of cultures.
19. Sultana Bar
Williams, Arizona
Open since 1912, there's a lot of history packed into Sultana Bar . There are tunnels under the building which were rumored to have been for running drugs, but most definitely were for hiding booze during Prohibition. There's a passageway to the former theater next door that used to screen silent films, and a police chief was murdered by a drunk patron in the bar in 1947. That, along with animal mounts like the cougar behind the bar, gave the tavern an air of intrigue and edginess that has never really gone away.

Charles Barkley’s first known restaurant stop in Minneapolis: Manny’s Steakhouse
Since Sunday night, Minnesotans have inundated Charles Barkley with restaurant recommendations.
The advice came following a televised interview after the Timberwolves won Game 7, advancing them to the Western Conference finals.
In the interview, Barkley told Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards he had not been to Minnesota in “probably 20 years” and asked for restaurant recommendations for when he’s in town for the conference finals, which start Wednesday. The Minnesota Timberwolves face the Dallas Mavericks at Target Center.
- Charles Barkley asked Where should he eat in Minnesota during Western Conference finals?
Across social media, people offered a range of beloved food spots to visit across the Twin Cities metro and beyond. There was much speculation on where he could go given Minneapolis has a thriving restaurant scene and nearby suburb Maple Grove recently declared itself a “restaurant capital.”

But it appears his first restaurant stop was a place he’s reportedly already visited: Manny’s Steakhouse in downtown Minneapolis.
Charles Barkley has yet to respond to an Instagram DM from MPR News seeking comment or confirmation that Manny’s was, in fact, his first restaurant stop. A photo posted on X appears to show Barkley at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport around 3 p.m. on Tuesday and the general manager at Manny’s said Barkley arrived for a meal around 8 or 8:30 p.m., so it’s possible he went elsewhere first.
Manny’s Steakhouse shared a photo with Barkley and three servers from Tuesday night.
“Charles has been here before and been a big Manny’s supporter and so we were hoping we’d see him in town this visit,” said Dave Wilson, general manager of Manny’s Steakhouse, which bills itself online as “one of America’s top 10 steakhouses.”
Wilson said Barkley came in with a group of several people. He had a “big, fat juicy Manny’s steak” and there were a couple big plates of hash browns for the table. (MPR News had to ask because our social media comment section has been flooded with comments wondering what Barkley eats.)
Wilson said Barkley was “really, really cordial” to staff and other guests around, taking photos with people at the front and generally being supportive of Minneapolis.
“It’s pretty fun. It’s good for the city,” said Wilson. He was watching the game on Sunday night and thinks the televised exchange was great for local restaurants.
“Post COVID, you know, we’ve had a slow recovery and whenever there’s positive light about the city and high energy, a reason to visit — I think when people come here, they love the city and just kind of a reminder of how nice a place Minneapolis is.”
“We think it’s awesome when people can come down and have a great experience and let everyone know it’s safe to return and it’s a good place to visit,” he added.

Visit Rotterdam as it transforms itself into a floating city
This flood-prone Dutch city, one of the world’s largest ports, is meeting the challenges of rising seas with innovative architecture.
Facing the North Sea, sliced by three major rivers, and dotted with lakes and streams, the low-lying Netherlands has long been vulnerable to flooding. After the devastating deluge of 1953 killed almost 2,000 people, the proactive Dutch government devised the ambitious Delta Programme , creating dams, dikes, and sophisticated, computer-controlled storm barriers. The ensuing years brought additional flood-taming tactics such as catchment areas that mimic natural river floodplains, and “green dikes” covered in water-absorbent clay and grass to dampen waves. These national initiatives have also helped the country address the growing global problem of rising seas.
Rotterdam , the Netherlands’ second largest city, tackles climate change with a singular inventiveness. Flattened during World War II, the city remade itself, embracing daring architecture . With 85 percent of this delta city below sea level, Rotterdam manages water overflows with creative solutions, such as plazas, garages, parks, and gardens designed to act as temporary reservoirs.
“These [and other] urban projects will make the city better equipped to deal with rainwater, improve our urban mobility, and reduce heat stress, and in effect…make our city more resilient, healthier, and enjoyable for all,” says Arnoud Molenaar, Chief Resilience Officer of Rotterdam.
Here’s how visitors can check out some of these innovative venues themselves.
Buy milk from a floating farm
Some 40 brown-and-white Meuse-Rhine-Issel cows spend most of their day in an airy stable on the top level of the three-tier Floating Farm , a micro-dairy moored in the Port of Rotterdam. (They can also graze on shore.) Robots maneuver about, available to milk and feed them, and to scoop up manure. A solar panel-lined canopy provides the cows with shade and also collects rainwater that’s purified for them to drink. Milk, buttermilk, yogurt, and butter are processed on the middle tier, and wheels of Gouda-style cheese mature on the cooler, lowest level sitting below the water’s surface. “Bringing food production to the city not only reduces food miles but also creates awareness about food production,” says Minke van Wingerden, co-founder of the Floating Farm.
Visitors can buy dairy products in the farm’s shop on shore, which is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. They can tour the floating farm itself at these times, following the elaborate signage that guides them through the facilities. They can roam the top floor, watching cows get milked, and then navigate to the level below to see milk- and yogurt-processing.
Stay overnight in a wikkelboat
Solar-powered and sustainably made, wikkelboats are two-room boutique houseboats, available in Rijnhaven and Wijnhaven harbors (with more locations in the works). Each is constructed from two dozen layers of corrugated cardboard, making them light, while also providing soundproofing and heat insulation. (Their whimsical sounding name is apt, given that wikkel is Dutch for “wrapper.”) Varying in size and amenities, each of the wikkelboats has a well-stocked kitchenette, some a washer/dryer, and some with a five-person outdoor jacuzzi. Guests can rent water toys, including stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, and canoes/kayaks. “Guests love unwinding in the jacuzzi while enjoying the urban landscape,” says CEO Sander Waterval. Wikkelboats are also available in the Dutch town of Den Bosch.
Savor vegetarian fare in a floating restaurant
A 60-foot-long floating gangway provides access to Floating Office Rotterdam (FOR), located in tranquil Rijnhaven, a former industrial harbor. Constructed of wood, this three-story building is carbon negative and energy positive, with a roof divided between solar panels and grass that absorbs rainwater, dissipates heat, and provides an ecosystem for birds. The cantilevered roof and balconies reduce overheating, and harbor water is used to warm or cool the interior as needed.
“Combining high-tech with low-tech solutions is an innovative take on sustainable architecture,” says Albert Richters of Powerhouse Company, the project’s architectural firm. In June, the company welcomes the public to its on-site office, as part of Rotterdam Architecture Month’s annual Open Office Day.
One of FOR’s tenants is the upscale restaurant Putaine , designed with abundant floor-to-ceiling windows. Helmed by acclaimed restaurateurs Eva Eekman and Michael Schook, Putaine serves a seasonal menu of small dishes, with a focus on vegetarian items. The artistically presented delicacies offer plenty of sensory surprises, such as barbecued avocado with green curry and yuzu. “We do our very best to operate as sustainably as possible,” says Eekman, who also stocks natural wines. In warm weather, visitors can dine or drink on the waterfront terrace, or take a dip in FOR’s pool.
(Is Amsterdam the new capital of cannabis tourism?)
Visit a floating villa
In Nassauhaven, a disused harbor, the Harbourlofts are 18 two- and three-story villas designed to be carbon-neutral. Each off-the-grid villa is equipped with solar panels, a water purification system, and a biomass installation or heat pump to generate heat. Residents—including the project’s architect, Pieter Figdor, who recently moved in—have access to e-charging stations and shared e-cars and e-bikes. Set on concrete pontoons and anchored to the harbor bottom with steel mooring poles, the lofts are highly stable, though you’ll still feel some motion. Adding to the green sensibility: the villas in this flood-prone area look out onto a nature-friendly tidal park developed both for the aesthetics and as an adaptation to flooding. (The plants help soak up water, as does the clay surface.)
De Rotterdam Tours offers a two-hour, guided floating city tour that includes visits to the quay or the terrace of a floating villa, as well as to the exterior of FOR and a wikkelboat ($527/group, plus $8/per person for a water taxi).

Fun on cruise ships: royal caribbean presents a train-inspired restaurant, ‘we want you to believe that you are on a train’.
Trent Kelly , Reporter
BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Royal Caribbean presented The Royal Railway, a restaurant concept inspired by the turn-of-the-century rail journeys.
The two 24-seat train cars will be on board the Utopia of the Seas, the sixth ship of the Oasis Class set to start service in July out of Port Canaveral.
“We want you to believe that you are on a train,” said Jay Schneider, Royal Caribbean’s chief product innovation officer.
To enhance the illusion, the interior has LED screens dressed by window frames and a team of actors will play their roles. The chef’s menu will match the destinations.
The experiences may vary from the family-friendly Old Wild West adventure, a romantic Silk Road journey through Asia, hot chocolate time at the North Pole, and wine tastings in Napa Valley.
