Press Release

Itb berlin 2023: world’s leading travel trade show to take place live again next march in berlin.

Focus on B2B customers and new dates: Tuesday, 7 to Thursday, 9 March 2023 – Big platform for the host country Georgia – Partner event Berlin Travel Festival will augment the leisure fair BOAT & FUN BERLIN in November 2022

Messe Berlin is planning a number of important changes next year to mark the first in-person edition of ITB Berlin since the pandemic began. Instead of running from a Wednesday to a Sunday, ITB Berlin 2023 will take place on three successive days, from Tuesday 7 to Thursday, 9 March . The demands placed on global trade fairs have changed considerably in recent years, which is why in future and in terms of customers, the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show is concentrating its efforts to focus on exhibiting companies as well as exclusively on trade visitors, buyers and the media. As in previous years, the internationally renowned ITB Berlin Convention will take place live parallel with the exhibition on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, with selected sessions live-streamed on itb.com. Virtual services surrounding the live show will round off events.

“By positioning ITB Berlin exclusively as a B2B product we want to make the format future-proof and further significantly enhance the brand as a global catalyst of the tourism industry, said David Ruetz, head of ITB Berlin . “At the same time we are making sure to give our image a necessary boost and improve our existing ties and ability to attract new customers. In the past we have repeatedly observed that the majority of our exhibitors place a clear emphasis on addressing B2B audiences. In future, this move will make it possible to further concentrate their efforts.”

According to Ruetz, the new concept enables ITB Berlin to explore avenues for further developing the trade show and also targeting audiences with additional networking opportunities. Concerning exhibitors, the trade show is announcing the return of a popular event, with ITB Berlin 2023 once again planning to honour outstanding exhibitor representations with the ITB Exhibitor Award.

BOAT & FUN BERLIN is the new meeting place for consumer products

Messe Berlin also has new things in store for the general public and companies interested in B2C business. The Berlin Travel Festival , until now the consumer partner event of ITB, will in future represent the B2C element of the boating and leisure exhibition BOAT & FUN BERLIN, which will take place from 24 to 27 November 2022 on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. The Berlin Travel Festival was previously held at Arena Berlin, parallel with ITB Berlin’s open weekend for the public. With its new concept, Messe Berlin has established dates for the general public, who will be able to focus on a single time period and find the whole range of leisure services, as well as boats, caravanning, camping and fishing products practically under one roof. For additional information: boot-berlin.de and berlintravelfestival.com .

Big platform for the host country Georgia

Georgia, the official host country, will play an important part at ITB Berlin 2023. Last year, it fascinated visitors as ITB Berlin’s Adventure & Sustainability Partner, and presented its cultural attractions in the role of Convention & Culture Partner in 2022. In May, Georgia was the first destination to host the new TRVLX by ITB event series. On Monday, 6 March, on the eve of ITB Berlin 2023, Georgia will kick off the trade show with a festive opening gala at the CityCube Berlin, which will be live-streamed. The country will also be strongly represented on the exhibition grounds, including at hub27 and in Hall 4.1.

Exhibitors can register soon for ITB Berlin

As of mid-June exhibitors will be able to register for ITB Berlin 2023. By registering no later than 31 August 2022 they can take advantage of an Early Bird stand rental offer, starting at EUR 205/m² (instead of EUR 209 209/m²). The offer applies as of stand registrations being officially announced (estimated to be mid-June). The deadline for registrations is 30 September 2022 . Information on all other conditions of participation can be obtained when stand registrations have been announced. More details are available at: itb.com .

About ITB Berlin and the ITB Berlin Convention

Since 1966, ITB Berlin has been the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show. The ITB Berlin convention is the world’s largest travel industry event of its kind. In 2022 it took place as a virtual event on the brand’s website itb.com and registered 60,700 attendees from 125 countries who took part in more than 100 sessions featuring 223 speakers. Taking place on one day, the Digital Business Day gave 2,500 attendees from 96 countries an opportunity to exchange views and do business virtually from anywhere in the world. International attendance was high, with 78 per cent of buyers and providers taking part from abroad. A total of 20,000 business contacts were made, resulting in 14,000 leads and 3,200 business meetings being arranged. As a virtual industry platform, the Digital Business Day augmented the ITB brand family and rounded off the trade show concept. In 2022, under the heading ’TRVLX by ITB’, ITB Berlin is planning a series of B2B networking events in European markets – the kick-off event will take place in May in Georgia. Before the pandemic at ITB Berlin 2019, around 10,000 exhibitors from 181 countries displayed their products and services to some 160,000 visitors, including 113,500 trade visitors. Meet the Berlin Travel Festival

The Berlin Travel Festival is a unique format that explores new perspectives on travel. The three-day event showcases what travel means in today’s world – from the way trips are planned to the way moments are captured and shared.

Representing a new generation of travelers, the Berlin Travel Festival focuses on innovative, sustainable concepts and advocates for a better shared future. Ecological and social responsibility are at the heart of the festival’s philosophy.

The festival embodies the new awareness of travel and tourism and sees it as its mission to exchange and discuss with experts, brands and travelers. Since the festival’s inception in 2018, over 600 exhibitors and 300 speakers have been convinced by the festival concept.

Berlin Travel Festival is part of a new leisure fair concept for private visitors. New travel and leisure offers, are now supplemented by the topics of boats, caravanning, camping and fishing. Four special trade fairs are in the future practically under one roof to find.

Meet the team!

The Berlin Travel Festival team is made up of adventurers of every kind. When we’re not preparing for the travel festival, we can be found surfing in Puerto Rico, relaxing on Bali’s beaches, setting up projects in Tokyo, road-tripping through the Americas, hiking high in the Himalayas, or handcrafting homes in the countryside. We bring our personal experiences, passion, insight, and dedication to every aspect of the Berlin Travel Festival.

Meet our values!

We are convinced that travel should be possible for everyone. Regardless of age, gender, physical abilities, financial possibilities or other limitations. Traveling for everyone is just as important to us as giving space to exchange and awareness and seeking sustainable solutions in tourism. You can find all this in our Festival values !

ITB BERLIN 2022: TOURISM ESSENTIAL FOR CONNECTING PEOPLE IN CHALLENGING TIMES

The eagerly awaited itb berlin convention 2022 kicked off in a digital format on march 8, allowing the international travel industry to reconnect and share thoughts during three days of exciting conferences and keynote speeches..

The convention – one of the leading B2B events in Europe for the travel industry – offers top buyers, exhibitors and media to connect and network.

“The world has already experienced two years of the coronavirus pandemic and now the war in Ukraine is overshadowing global events,” explained Martin Ecknig (pictured), CEO Messe Berlin. “Since its launch in 1966, ITB Berlin has provided an important platform for the international travel industry, and together with tourism it stands for international understanding among cultures and for peace. Messe Berlin has been a place to meet, regardless of the political context.

“After Covid-19, the world is making an almost seamless transition to another global crisis, the consequences of which we can only vaguely imagine at the moment. What is clear however, is that we live in a world of constant change. As a firmly established member of the tourism industry and against the backdrop of all the challenges and uncertainty, with ITB Berlin we can offer the industry some orientation and a corresponding space for dialogue.

“The core of our tourism industry is to build bridges to connect together.”

The cancellation of ITB Berlin 2022 as a face-to-face format was a difficult decision to make, admitted Ecknig.

“With the new coronavirus variant, we took the decision in December to cancel the event as we wanted to give security in planning for exhibitors,” he said. “It was not an easy measure but we had no room for manoeuvre as we had to follow Federal State rules.”

Over 100 panel discussions to take place during ITB Berlin

In its digital format, however, the ITB Berlin 2022 Convention is providing a wide range of content and opportunities for all participants. During the virtual event from Tuesday, 8 March to Thursday, 10 March, leading experts will examine the most pressing topics of the global tourism industry from every perspective.

In total, ITB Berlin Convention will welcome 102 panels, lectures, presentations, exhibitors’ press conferences and discussions with 223 leading experts and companies assessing the global challenges facing the travel industry.

One of the key focus areas will be on the pandemic and its impact as well as the challenges of geopolitical conflicts and crises. Resilience, digitalisation, socially responsible tourism are the themes driving most of the conferences and panels.

Ecknig confirmed that a range of B2B events will be organised over the summer, which will be open for selected exhibitors, buyers and media, “allowing to satisfy the need to meet face to face,” described Ecknig.

The opening press conference was also an opportunity to welcome Georgian Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Prof. Dr. Levan Izoria. Georgia is the ITB Berlin 2022 Convention & Culture Partner . The country will also be the Official Host Country for ITB Berlin 2023. “We are strongly committed to making our participation as Host Country a successful event,” promised the Ambassador.

Digital Business Day on March 17

Last but not least, the three-day ITB Berlin Convention will be followed by the Digital Business Day on 17 March. As a networking platform, this offers one-on-one networking opportunities, audio-video meetings, information on global travel trends and forecasts, as well as on-demand corporate news and automated speed-dating. The virtual format is a catalyst for business networking. The event will be augmented by the IPK World Monitor with global travel trends and forecasts for 2022 as well as company presentations.

Optimism continues to drive tourism. Peter Kautz, MD Statista Q, pointed out that by the end of 2023, tourist movements should have reached pre-pandemic levels – a vision shared by Norbert Fiebig, president of the German Travel Association (DRV), as the desire of travel remains very strong after two challenging years.

Live Sessions

The live sessions at the event also offered opportunity for seasoned travellers to offer their tips on travel. One session that was inspiring was a session with ‘Zewedi’ a black woman living in Germany who uses a platform to talk about the travel experiences of a black person. The lesson here is that when travelling to a foreign land leave all stereotypes and go with an open mind to experience the culture and way of life of the natives.

travel expo berlin

The second panel that was also intriguing was ‘Stephan Orth’ who shared his travel experience in the UK in 2020.  His biggest take away was travelling without causing harm to the environment and how 5 weeks of travel did him good. He was happier and even healthier.

travel expo berlin

Sustainability was also a recurring theme on those year’s expo. How does one travel sustainably? This question was discussed by a panel that discussed ‘how does one fly sustainably?’

travel expo berlin

There are many ways in which one can do that is: one should try take a flight that fly directly to destination. Secondly, one should also take a flight where the commission and green cards have been catered for. The question of sustainability in travel continues to be one that must be addressed as we progress and revolutionize the travel industry. The future of the travel industry is set to change especially after the Covid-19 pandemic and the way travellers are becoming more conscious of their travel choices in matters of the impact on the environment and tried to travel sustainably.

travel expo berlin

One can say the Berlin Travel was worth attending. There was so much to experience and to learn. Also due to the fact that a boat Exhibition was running parallel to the Berlin Travel Expo. This provided an opportunity for travellers who love being on the water to sample boats, surfing equipment and even swimming gear.

6 Reasons Why ITB Berlin Is the Lifeline of the Travel Industry

COVID-19 has dramatically affected daily life and has completely transformed the travel and tourism industry in ways that are still unknown. We’ve never been in a similar position before where travel and demands for travel are so high as we’ve never been interconnected to this degree in the past. The only way for the industry as a whole to move forward is to coordinate and navigate the changing landscape with every new wave and variant.

ITB Berlin is one of the vital meeting grounds for such coordination. It allows for agencies, big associations and the HoReCa sector to establish valuable conversations and define the new normal. The annual trade show has been instrumental for over sixty years. It even has satellite events in other countries, which continue its work. Now ITB Berlin is leading the charge to overhaul how we travel and do it as safely as possible.

To say that ITB Berlin represents the whole world of tourism is not an overstatement. The trade show is where travel professionals can research what’s new along the entire value chain: medical tourism, LGTB tourism, cruises, cultural tourism, wellness tourism, youth tourism, business tourism, luxury travel, adventure travel and responsible tourism. That’s not to say about the sheer volume of technologies and hospitality services available to explore.

ITB Berlin has stellar attendance overall. The Berlin ExpoCenter City successfully hosts 10,000 exhibitors from all over the world. Visitor numbers are astronomically higher, reaching 160,000 people and above. ITB Berlin is perhaps one of the most international events as it registers visitors from 180 countries.

You have your European market leaders like the UK, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Then the list grows to include the MENASA region, the American and the East Asian markets like China, Japan and South Korea. In terms of professional backgrounds, the halls spill over with tour operators, hotel enterprises, traffic carriers, tourist organizations, travel agencies and advertising agencies.

Aside from the purely business aspects, ITB Berlin is even more valuable for its convention. The information program features three tracks, which are instrumental for the survival and growth of the travel industry.

The ITB Future & Resilience Track is the rebranded future track, which captures the megatrends in the economy and society. With the conversations happening around COVID-19, the big topics revolve around safe travel – digitalization, sustainability, and resilience. Top speakers are going to dig deep into the future of travel tech, international mobility, how possible going back to normal is and whether policymakers are helping tourism build resilience.

The second track is the ITB eTravel Track, which has a much more hands-on feel to it. There will be a lot of know-how and practical advice on all sorts of subjects like distribution, marketing, and travel technology. Digitalization is the overarching theme as contactless technologies and fewer face-to-face interactions with passengers are top priorities. You will be able to hear about the positive and negative results of digitalization and automation, future opportunities, personalization and augmented reality. During this track, you will also be able to watch innovator presentations as part of the Hotel Tech Startup Pitch.

The final track is the Responsible Tourism Track. Responsibility extends beyond keeping travelers safe during their flights. It’s also about taking action towards a greener industry. ITB Berlin is continuing the work of decarbonization by presenting new solutions and best practices, which aim to not only stop harmful effects over ecosystems but also achieve restoration. Science shares the stage with business. This is the track where organizations, governmental, industry leaders, change-makers and strategists deliver hands-on advice on what measures are essential.

Tired of boring package tours and the same destinations over and over again?

travel expo berlin

Then the Berlin Travel Festival is just the right thing for you!

The relatively new travel event gathers exhibitors and speakers for a new generation of travelers who value innovative and sustainable concepts.

From Nov. 25 to Nov. 27, 2022, the travel event will run in Berlin's exhibition halls, bringing you countless sources of inspiration for new travel opportunities and new destinations.

A diverse list of speakers will share their travel experiences, inspire and motivate to explore the world through new and sustainable ways!

Exhibitors and speakers include nature photographers, travel journalists, travel bloggers and others with a focus on sustainable travel.

Among them are Charlott Tornow from the popular travel blog "Reisevergnügen" ("New Ways of Travel" on 27.11. from 12.30h). , authors of the publishing house Reisedepeschen and also the "most travelled woman in the world" Christine Thürmer.

Christo Foerster is an adventurer, best-selling author, and change expert.

What is so special about the Berlin Travel Festival?

travel expo berlin

What is so special about the Berlin Travel Festival and what sets it apart from other festivals?

The organizers see themselves as "representatives of a new generation of travelers who, with the Travel Festival, value innovative, sustainable concepts and are committed to a better shared future. Ecological and social responsibility are central components of the festival philosophy.

In contrast to trade fairs such as the ITB (the world's largest travel trade fair - also in Berlin), the (large) travel companies are not the main players here.

New travel trends will be presented that you won't see at other trade shows for a few years at the earliest - if ever.

And you will have the opportunity to get in touch directly with travel bloggers, adventurers, experts in intercultural and sustainable travel - and exchange ideas with them.

It's a physical trade show where you're not just a short text in the social media comment columns, but can get real interaction with travel experts.

My own experience

travel expo berlin

Already in 2018 and 2019 I had the opportunity to visit the (quite) new Travel Festival, meet like-minded people and learn about new travel formats.

The relaxed atmosphere here immediately brings you into contact with other travel bloggers and new topics.

So it's not just a one-way show, but also a suitable meeting place to meet new people with the same travel interests.
