Whether you're looking for beachfront villas, city-center hotels, or cozy cottages in the countryside, Indonesia has a wide array of options to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

What is the best time to visit Indonesia?

The best time to visit Indonesia depends on the specific region you plan to explore, as the country's climate can vary significantly from one island to another. Indonesia experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, so understanding the seasons can help you plan your trip effectively. Here's a general breakdown:

1. Peak Season (May to September):

Best Time for Most Islands: The dry season, from May to September, is considered the peak tourist season in Indonesia. During this period, many parts of the country experience sunny and dry weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach vacations, and exploring cultural attractions.

Bali: Bali, one of Indonesia's top tourist destinations, is especially crowded from June to August. Expect higher prices and larger crowds during these months.

2. Shoulder Seasons (April and October):

April: April is a transitional month, marking the end of the wet season and the beginning of the dry season in many regions. It can be an excellent time to visit as the landscapes are lush and prices may be slightly lower.

October: October is another shoulder season when the dry season is just beginning. The weather is generally pleasant, and crowds are thinner compared to the peak months.

3. Off-Season (November to March):

Rainy Season: The wet season typically occurs from November to March in many parts of Indonesia. During this period, heavy rains and occasional storms can disrupt travel plans and make outdoor activities less enjoyable.

Bali: Bali experiences its rainy season from November to March, with frequent downpours. While it's considered the low season, some travelers still visit during this time, as accommodations and flights may be more affordable.

4. Regional Considerations:

Raja Ampat: For diving enthusiasts, the best time to visit Raja Ampat is during the dry season from October to April when underwater visibility is excellent.

Sumatra: Sumatra's rainy season typically runs from October to January, so it's advisable to visit during the dry months.

Keep in mind that Indonesia is vast and diverse, with each island having its own climate patterns. Before planning your trip, research the specific region you intend to visit to determine the best time to enjoy your preferred activities and weather conditions.

Currency Information in Indonesia

The currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Currency exchange services are readily available at airports, banks, and exchange booths across the country. Credit and debit cards are accepted in urban areas, but it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments.

Getting Around in Indonesia

Navigating Indonesia's islands and cities is an adventure in itself. Airport transfers, taxis, and ride-hailing services are widely accessible. Domestic flights, ferries, and boats offer convenient ways to explore this diverse nation. Getting around in Indonesia offers a variety of transportation options, but it's essential to note that the availability of specific services may vary by city and island. Here's an overview of some of the common modes of transportation and their characteristics:

Metro Options Near Airports: Indonesia doesn't have extensive metro systems, and currently, there are no metro options near airports in major Indonesian cities. However, some cities like Jakarta and Surabaya have plans to develop metro systems in the future.

Renting a Car: Renting a car is a convenient option in Indonesia, especially if you plan to explore remote areas or multiple destinations. Many international and local car rental agencies operate in major cities and at airports.

Buses: Buses are a common and affordable mode of transportation in Indonesia. In cities like Jakarta and Bali, you'll find various types of buses, including public buses and tourist shuttle buses. The fare can be as low as IDR 3,000 to IDR 6,000 (approximately ₹15 to ₹30) for a short distance in a public bus. However, public buses may not be the most comfortable or convenient option for tourists.

Ride-Hailing Services: Grab is a popular ride-hailing service in Indonesia, similar to Uber. You can use the Grab app to book rides conveniently, and it's available in major cities and tourist destinations. Fares are typically calculated based on distance and traffic conditions, making it a reliable and cost-effective choice.

Taxis: Taxis are widely available in cities and at airports. It's advisable to use reputable taxi companies or ridesharing apps like Grab to ensure fair fares and safety. Always ask the driver to use the meter or agree on a fare before starting the trip.

Motorcycle Taxis (Ojek): In some cities, motorcycle taxis known as "ojek" are a popular way to navigate through traffic quickly. While convenient, make sure to wear a helmet and negotiate the fare in advance.

Keep in mind that traffic conditions can be challenging, especially in major cities like Jakarta and Bali, so plan your transportation accordingly. Additionally, it's a good idea to have a map or a navigation app handy to help you get around, especially if you're exploring less touristy areas.

  • Select the correct visa type depending on the nature of your visit – tourism, business or transit. Make sure your choice aligns with your planned activities and duration of stay in the country.
  • Online registration : visit the official website of the Indonesian Immigration Department and register on their online portal. This process will require you to input your basic personal information.
  • Complete the visa application form : after successful registration, fill out the online visa application form. The form will ask for details about your travel itinerary, accommodation and financial means. Ensure all the information provided is accurate and truthful.
  • Upload required documents . Upload scanned copies of the required documents.
  • Pay the visa application fee : after submitting the application form and necessary documents, proceed to the payment section. The fees depend on the type of visa you are applying for. Online payments are accepted through credit or debit cards.
  • Wait for application processing . Once the payment is made, your application will be submitted for review. This process can take several working days, so be patient. You will be informed of your application status by email.
  • Collect your visa : upon approval of your visa application, you will receive a notification email. You may then need to visit the Indonesian embassy or consulate in India to collect your visa, or it might be sent to you electronically, depending on the type of visa.
  • Prepare for your trip : with the visa in hand, you can now prepare for your trip !
  • Renewal Process

You have to submit your renewal application before your current visa expires, preferably a few weeks prior.

Be prepared to submit similar documentation to your initial application and ensure your passport remains valid for the entirety of the new visa period. Always keep track of your visa expiry date to avoid overstaying.

  • How Long Is Valid For ?

The validity of your Indonesian visa depends on the type. A tourist visa is valid for 30 days from the date of arrival , and it can be extended for another 30 days while in Indonesia.

Business visas and social-cultural visas have different durations, often up to 60 days , and can also be extended under specific circumstances. Indonesian visa on arrival is valid for 30 days in total.

  • Indonesia Visa Fees For Indian (Cost to Expect)

Visa fees

The cost associated with the Indonesian visa varies based on the type of visa.

The Indonesia visa price for Indian citizens for a Tourist visa is approximately $40 USD and a visa on arrival costs around $30.

You can also expect to pay $80 for a multiple-entry visa. The only free option is the diplomatic visa.

  • How Long Indians Are Waiting To Get Visa For Indonesia

The processing time for an Indonesian visa for Indian citizens takes around 3 to 5 working days , provided all the necessary documents are in order and the application form has been filled correctly.

But bear in mind this timeline may vary depending on the workload at the consulate or embassy, the time of year and individual circumstances. This is why we would advise you to apply well in advance of your intended travel date.

  • Bringing Family With You

You will be able to bring your family with you to Indonesia but each family member must apply for their own visa , regardless of their age.

The visa application process remains the same and your close ones must meet all the standard visa requirements.

Also, including family members in your travel plans may also influence the type of visa you apply for.

If you’re planning an extended stay, for example, a social-cultural visa – valid for 60 days – might be more appropriate.

  • Cost Of Living In Indonesia

The cost of living

For an Indian citizen, the cost of living in Indonesia may be economical .

But the exact expenses will vary depending on your lifestyle, location and spending habits.

You can also check the Cost of Living in Indonesia here.

  • Which Part of Indonesia Indians Visit the Most ?

The most visited part of Indonesia by Indians is undoubtedly Bali , notably for its lush landscapes, stunning beaches, great food and rich cultural heritage.

  • Most Common Reasons of Rejection

Reasons rejection visa

Indonesia has a generally welcoming visa policy, but visa applications can sometimes face rejection .

The most common reasons are :

  • incomplete or incorrect application forms
  • absence of necessary supporting documents
  • insufficient financial proof to support the stay
  • unclear travel purposes

Authorities might also deny the visa if there are previous immigration law violations or if the passport doesn’t have adequate validity left.

  • Is Travel Insurance Necessary ?

It is not a mandatory requirement for obtaining an Indonesian visa, but travel insurance is highly recommended for all international travelers, including Indians applying for Indonesia visa.

A comprehensive travel insurance policy will protect you against unforeseen circumstances (medical emergencies, trip cancellations, baggage loss, etc.).

Given Indonesia’s tropical climate, it can be prone to natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis. So having travel insurance will provide some peace of mind.

Indonesia Visa for Indians: A Detailed Guide to Scoring One!

Indonesia Visa for Indians – I’ve lived in Indonesia for 8 years and my parents have lived there for over a decade now. Young then, I never bothered peeping at the essential documents for traveling. No, I was more into peeping at the skies from the airplane’s window seat.

While I stayed in a less-touristy city in Indonesia, there’s a good reason why millions (over 15 million) visit this tropical Southeast Asian country EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

While Bali is the most popular island here among 17,000 islands in Indonesia, the whole country itself is worth traveling to. For its active volcanic mountains, exotic beaches, rich heritage and culture, the local lifestyle, thick tropical rainforests, and offbeat snorkeling spots – all of it’s worth getting a Visa to Indonesia from India.

indonesia Visa for Indians, bali visa for indians

Now with the necessity of solo travel, here’s a guide to getting an Indonesia Visa for Indians. With the current pandemic, it’s close to impossible to travel to Indonesia, especially for Indians .

I’d advise you to avoid visiting even when the restrictions lift until the pandemic resides further. Regarding it, I’ve put up the pandemic section for Indonesia visas first. Skip it in case you’re already aware.

Indonesia Visa for Indians – Covid-19 Restrictions

As of July 2021, Indonesia Visa isn’t available for tourists from travelers who’ve been in India for the past 14 days. Only Indonesians returning to their country and foreigners with work permits have a chance of getting a visa.

Also, I don’t recommend visiting Indonesia until the pandemic resides with a stable benchmark. With the current scenario – there are heavy flight charges and hotel quarantine charges.

Note : The following section of this article isn’t applicable during COVID-19. Stay updated with current travel restrictions in Indonesia.

How to Get Indonesia Visa for Indians

You don’t need a visa to travel to Indonesia from India and many other countries for less than 30 days. Get a Visa-exemption stamp at the Immigration counter for free and you’re good to go! For visits longer than 30 days, the cheapest way to get a visa is to apply on arrival.

Anyway, here’s the best way to apply for Indonesia Visa for longer visits:

Visa-on-Arrival

Indonesia, being a popular tourist country, allows many countries including India to get Visa-on-arrival. Once you land in the airport, walk to the immigration section and apply for it.

Things you’ll need to have to apply for the visa are:

  • A valid passport from at least 6 months prior to the date of entry. Make sure it has a blank page for the visa.
  • The travel ticket for proof
  • Explain the reason for your visit
  • Finally, the Visa fee depends on your choice of Visa.

Apply for an e-Visa or through the Indonesian Embassy – This is the hard way to get an Indonesia Visa. But it’s an option :)

Types of Visas for More than 30 days in Bali

For Indonesia Visa for Indians for longer durations, here are the types to choose from:

  • Tourist Visa. This is visa-free for Indians. But for a longer duration trip, opt for an on-arrival visa.
  • Business Visa
  • Long Term Visa

indonesia visa for indians, bali visa for indians

These are only options for over 30 days period of stay. But for those visiting Bali, 30 days should be more than sufficient for a traveler’s thirst.

Best Way to Get to Indonesia from India

The next question is about getting to Indonesia. To the ones flying straight to Bali for a holiday shouldn’t be a trouble. But for those traveling to a package trip of visiting countries like Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines in one go, there are better ways.

Most tourists look forward to visiting Bali rather than most of Indonesia. While it’s one of the world’s best tourist destinations, there are many more beautiful places and rich cultures to experience in Indonesia. But for this guide’s sake, let’s talk of Bali:

Flight from India to Bali

Is there a direct flight from India to Bali? There is no direct flight from India to Bali. The best way to fly to Bali from India is to take a connecting flight from Jakarta, Malaysia, or Singapore.

For budget flight prices, take connecting flights from Malaysia or Jakarta as it’s are generally cheaper than Singapore.

As I live in Batam that’s only 20 km away from Singapore and hold a multi-entry Singapore visa, I took a flight via Changi Airport in Singapore. For those looking to visit more than one Southeast Asian country (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines), I’d recommend scoring a Singapore Visa too (It costs 30 SGD).

Another post for you to check out:  Bali 7 Days Itinerary: The Complete Guide

Get a Singapore Visa when Visiting Indonesia along with other SEA countries.

Here’s the best way to make use of your Singapore Visa :

  •  Singapore Visa is valid for 2 years and allows 30 days stay in its country. The best way to use it is to take flights through Changi Airport to other countries.
  • For example, you can take a flight from India to Singapore.
  • From Singapore to Indonesia , take a connecting flight to your destination. Also, consider using the ferry from HarbourFront Singapore to get to Indonesia (This is only to visit certain Indonesian islands).
  • To visit Malaysia , the cheapest way is by taking a bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur . Flying is also another option – but pricey.
  • Lastly, visit Singapore – one of the most beautiful countries in Asia! Protip: Some places you shouldn’t miss are Sentosa, Marina Bay Sands, and Universal Studios Singapore .

As we make many trips in a year across India and Indonesia, getting a Singapore Visa is the best (and cheapest) way.

Note: With the pandemic, scoring a Singapore visa is tough. And it’s a big no for tourism purposes.

How to Reach Indonesia

How to reach indonesia by flight / by air.

The fastest and the most convenient way to travel to Indonesia from India is by air. You can take a flight either to Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta or Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar. There are several airlines from India that offer connecting flights to these destinations. Indonesia is roughly 4483 kilometres (2786 mile) from India and the flight time is around 5 hours. You can book your flight from several major cities in India, such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Amritsar, Chennai, and Cochin, all of which offer you nonstop flights to your destination.

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta is the busiest airport and it is a mere 20 kilometres from the city centre. The airport offers all the amenities that the modern traveller desires – shops, cafes, lounges, ATM, etc. There could a bit of a wait while arriving or departing this airport. Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar can cater to large as well as smaller aircrafts making it your preferred choice if you’re heading to Bali.

There are several airlines that offer direct flights to Indonesia. Air India, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Emirates are some of the international carriers that can fly you to Indonesia. Garuda Indonesia is the national carrier, and you can travel within the country by catching a domestic flight on this airline

Connectivity within the country is excellent and you can easily get yourself a forward flight or alternate mode of transport to wherever your destination in Indonesia is. You can also check out the things to do in Indonesia .

How to Reach Indonesia By Sea

If you are feeling a little bit adventurous and also have a lot of time on hand, you can try traveling to Indonesia by sea. The experience of just relaxing aboard a luxurious ship, being lulled by the waves, is unlike any other. Sit back and enjoy the many comforts that the trip offers you.

There are no direct cruises from India and you will first need to head to Singapore. From there, you can hop on board a cruise going to Australia or one doing a circuitous trip around the Southeast Asian countries. You can disembark in Bali where you can continue the rest of your vacation. The cruise from Singapore to Australia usually takes about 6-7 days to reach Bali, with a halt in between at Semarang.

Transportation in indonesia

Commuting in indonesia.

What most tourists do is that they land at Bali and spend their vacation exploring the many coastal and cultural wonders that the island offers. Being a volcanic island also has its own charm and it is enough to keep tourists occupied.

However, if you wish to explore what else the world’s largest archipelago has to offer you, then Indonesia has an excellent transportation network that can whisk you from one corner to another, without breaking a sweat. Well, almost. There are airplanes, trains, cars, all kinds of two- and three-wheelers and cycles even.

After you land at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, you can immediately take a connecting domestic flight to your next destination. Garuda Indonesia is a state-operated airline that offers excellent connectivity between the many islands of Indonesia. Lion Air and Air Asia can also ferry you from one island to another.

While extremely convenient, the only downside to smaller airlines is the delay in departure time or getting bumped off the flight. To be sure that this does not happen, you must arrive early at the airport and confirm your reservation.

If you wish to spend some time in Bali first, you can get a taxi at the airport itself. The airport is about 13 kilometres from the city which means a travel time of about 30-35 minutes. You can pre-book the taxi at the taxi counter. You will receive a ticket with the destination and fare written on it. All you need to do is get on the taxi and head off on your journey.

Commuting within Indonesia

Whether it’s within Bali or some other destination, you need to figure out how to move around the country. Even though Indonesia comprises 17,500 islands – not all of them are inhabited – you wouldn’t be interested in all of them anyway. Considering the duration of your trip and the itinerary, you will need to decide which mode of transport works best for you.

Renting a car: You can rent a car for as low as Rs 700 a day, or even less, if you are good at bargaining or plan to hire it for several days at a stretch. Having a set of wheels with you is the most convenient way to see a particular place. Do note that most travel companies will not allow you to take the car to different islands even aboard car ferries. You will need an international driving permit. Most rental agencies will gladly rent you a car with a valid driving licence from your country, but you could get pulled over by cops who are quick to spot a tourist. You either part with a hefty fine or you will need to bribe your way through. It is much easier to get an international driving permit before you head over.

Taking the train: The islands of Java and Sumatra can be reached by Indonesia’s national railway, called Kereta Api. These are more convenient because their schedules are more reliable, they connect major points and the stations are centrally located, making it easy to head out to your sightseeing destination. You can buy tickets at the station at ticket windows called lokets. We suggest paying a little more and booking seats on the roomier and air-conditioned executive class, especially if you are traveling overnight or have a lot of distance to cover.

Going by ferry: When your entire country is made up of thousands of islands, it is no surprise that you need to have an excellent transport system. From small, open-to-the-sky, wooden boats to large steel ferries with cabins, you have it all. We recommend traveling by the state-owned Pelni service that is comfortable, reliable and halts at nearly all the ports that you would want to visit. There is no need to book in advance unless you are traveling during festival season when the boats run to maximum capacity.

Zip on two-wheelers: Spend a few days watching the locals zip by on their two-wheelers and you will want to do the same. But get on one only if you know how to ride one properly. The roads and traffic in Indonesia is unlike any that you have ever encountered before. And be sure to wear a helmet always.

Buses and more:   Indonesian buses are reliable and affordable for those traveling on a shoestring budget. Then there are bemos, the mini buses that are mostly used for short distances. Make sure you know the fare else you could get ripped-off. You can also opt to ride the motorized three-wheeled rickshaw, called the bajaj, which can carry two passengers. The becak, the bicycle-style rickshaw that is pedaled by the driver, can also carry two passengers. Do negotiate your fare before you start your journey to avoid misunderstandings.

If you have planned a trip to Indonesia, do check out our Indonesia Tour Packages . You can get all your flights, tickets and visa formalities taken care at Thomas Cook. What’s more, you can also pick up some Indonesian rupiah.

The 10 best places to visit in Indonesia

visit indonesia from india

Indonesia is how you've always imagined Asia – jungles, rice terraces, beaches, coral reefs and volcanoes © Martin Puddy / Getty Images

Few destinations can beat Indonesia  in terms of variety.

One day, you're strolling beneath the glistening skyscrapers of a modern city; the next, you're in a traditional hilltop village scoffing down steaming gado-gado (tofu, tempeh, vegetables slathered in a creamy peanut sauce).

From climbing the freezing-cold summit of a puffing volcano to beating through tropical rainforests in search of orangutans or tigers, Indonesia offers unparalleled opportunities for adventure. Where else can you salute the sun at sunrise and then surf a world-class barrel back to a virgin beach at sunset?

Roughly half of all international tourists land in Bali , but the nation is so much more than this one enticing island. From Java , Sumatra and Sulawesi to the frontier islands of West Papua (shared with Papua New Guinea) and Borneo (shared with Malaysia and Brunei), here are the top places to visit on a trip to Indonesia.

1. Jakarta, Java

Best city for art and history .

There’s no better place to get to grips with this vast and complex nation of 273 million people than its capital, Jakarta . Home to more than 10 million residents, it’s chaotic, traffic-clogged and sprawls over nearly 700 sq km (270 sq miles). It’s also home to the nation’s finest restaurants, wildest nightclubs and best museums.

Take time to browse the collections in the Museum Nasional (for history), Galeri Nasional (for classical art) and MACAN (for modern and contemporary art). From the Dutch colonial buildings of the Kota Tua neighborhood to the modern skyrises of the Golden Triangle, the city is both a study in contrasts and a crossroads of cultures, classes and cuisines.

An orangutan sitting on a wooden bench at Tanjung Puting National Park

2. Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan, Borneo

Best place to see orangutans.

If you want to see orangutans, the island of Borneo is the last place on earth (other than a few spots in neighboring Sumatra) where these great apes still thrive. Travelers looking for surefire sightings of orangutans head to Tanjung Puting National Park , a coastal tropical swamp forest that looks today like much of southern Borneo looked a few decades ago.

Most visitors hire liveaboard boats to travel up the Sekonyer River to feeding stations in the rainforest and Camp Leakey, the iconic rehabilitation center deep in the jungle where these auburn-haired 'men of the forest' live out a serene, semi-wild existence.

3. Raja Ampat, West Papua

Best place for snorkeling and diving.

Raja Ampat was once an under-the-radar destination visited only by intrepid scuba divers, but the whispers about this enticing island group have now reached a fever pitch. Off the coast of West Papua, the archipelago is a picture-perfect vision of paradise. Its lumpy green isles are blanketed in rainforests, dotted with languid lagoons and surrounded by warm turquoise seas at the vibrant heart of the Coral Triangle – an area of ocean with some of the greatest marine biodiversity on earth.

Raja Ampat's prismatic birds-of-paradise, which dance through the trees each morning at sunrise, informed the theory of evolution through natural selection, first developed by Charles Darwin’s less-appreciated contemporary, Alfred Russel Wallace. The British naturalist's restored hut is a popular attraction on the island of Gam. In addition to the dive lodges on Waigeo and Misool, many visitors sleep in homestays on virgin beaches, offering a chance to learn more about West Papua's distinctive culture.

Village women carry offerings of food on their heads in a temple procession near Ubud

4. Ubud, Bali

Best city for wellness and culture.

Rice paddies tumble down palm-lined hills, gamelan music fills the air, and floral offerings fill the streets in Bali’s most alluring (and on-trend) city, Ubud . By day, you can take a motorcycle out to the Monkey Forest for simian encounters, pop into the Yoga Barn for an ashtanga session, ogle the art at the Agung Rai Museum or shop for word-class beauty products, woodcarvings and batik textiles downtown. After dark, many people attend evening performances at local temples, where visitors are hypnotized by the beauty of courtly Legong ballets or wild Kecak fire dancing. Be careful! Many foreigners come to Ubud for a few days and end up staying a few years.

5. Komodo National Park, Nusa Tenggara

Best place for surprising wildlife encounters.

Dragons really do roam the earth at this sprawling national park , covering the three arid islands – Komodo, Padar and Rinca – that provide shelter for the world’s largest lizards. Komodo dragons are ancient-looking creatures that can grow up to 3m in length and weigh up to 70kg. Sadly, there are fewer than 1400 of these fork-tongued giants left in the wild. The chance to see them lures thousands of visitors each year, many of whom arrive on a boat tour en route from Lombok to Flores , stopping along the way to snorkel or dive off the coast of Sumbawa .

View from the temple of Borobudur, Java

6. Borobudur and Yogyakarta, Java

Best place for indonesian history.

Peru has Machu Picchu, Cambodia has Angkor Wat, and Indonesia has Borobudur , a nine-tiered temple from the 9th century that clocks in as the largest Buddhist structure in the world. Emblazoned across its walls are some 2672 intricately-carved bas relief panels featuring Buddhist legends and scenes of daily life in Java, as well as 72 distinctive, perforated stupas and more than 500 Buddha statues.

This colossal World Heritage Site lies amid sprawling rice paddies near Yogyakarta , an important education center and a hub for classical Javanese art forms, including batik-making, wayang puppetry and silversmithing. Yogya, as the city is known locally, is fiercely independent and still headed by a resident sultan, whose walled palace complex is the city’s top attraction.

7. Tana Toraja, Sulawesi

Best place for cultural traditions.

The jungle-clad hills and rugged granite cliffs of Tana Toraja would be enough of a lure for most places, but the big draw of the central highlands of Sulawesi is the Torajan people themselves. The inhabitants of this fascinating region maintain traditions that mark them apart from other Indonesians, living in villages of elaborately decorated houses with intricately carved walls and boat-shaped roofs.

Many rituals here revolve around death and the afterlife. The bodies of the deceased remain in the homes (and lives) of their relatives for months or even years after they pass – for Torajans, death is viewed as a gradual and social process, and locals are generally comfortable sharing these unusual traditions with visitors.

8. Kerinci Valley, Sumatra

Best place for hiking.

Southeast Asia’s tallest volcano, Gunung Kerinci – a 3805m (12,484ft) monster – lords over this remote highland valley on Sumatra , which has become one of Indonesia’s top spots for adventure travel. You can climb to the summit of this active volcano, swim beneath cascading waterfalls or search dense jungles for gibbons and langur monkeys.

Much of the land here is protected as Kerinci Seblat National Park, which is two times the size of Bali and protects more forest than all of Costa Rica’s national parks combined. At 13,791 sq km (5325 sq miles), Kerinci Seblat is the last large refuge for the critically endangered Sumatran tiger, which survives here in greater numbers than anywhere else on the planet.

9. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Java

Best place for beautiful indonesian views.

You don’t have to look far in Indonesia to find a volcano, but Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java contains a whopping five volcanoes right next to each other. These conical peaks are dotted around a lunar landscape that has sprung from the ancient Tengger caldera.

The most striking site is smoldering Gunung Bromo, which rises 2329m (7641ft) out of a crater that is almost 10km (6 miles) across, surrounded by the nation’s only erg (dune sea). Most visitors time the trek to the summit to arrive at dawn to view the crater and volcanoes at their ethereal best.

10. The Gili Islands, Lombok

Best place for beach parties.

These tiny dollops of coral and sand off the coast of Lombok carry an outsized reputation thanks to their crystalline turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, ambitious vegan and health food restaurants, renowned freediving schools and epic beach parties. The Gilis started out as a boho backpacker destination, but the islands now cater to all types of travelers, with everything from backstreet hostels to luxurious beachfront cabanas (beach huts).

Gili Trawangan (aka ‘Gili T’) is the largest and most developed of the islands, with a main drag that heaves with shops, massage parlors and cafes. Gili Meno is the smallest and most traditional island, while Gili Air offers the best of both worlds and is a lively hub for yoga tourism.

Travel Indonesia: Visa Rules To Must-Visit Places — All You Need To Know Before Exploring This Country

Travel indonesia: situated in the pacific ocean and home to 17,000 islands and hundreds of ancient hindu temples, the island nation offers visas on arrival for indians..

Travel Indonesia Visa Passport Rules Must-Visit Places Things To Know Before Exploring This Country Travel Indonesia: Visa Rules To Must-Visit Places — All You Need To Know Before Exploring This Country

If you're not just a tourist but also an explorer looking for a place with rich history, cultural diversity, and the stunning world of the ocean- Indonesia is your all-at-one-place destination. Known for its pristine beaches, glorious mountains, lush green forests, and joyful cities, Indonesia captivates every tourist with its charm and allure.

The word 'Indonesia' is derived from the Greek words 'Indos' and 'Nesos', which translates to 'Indian Islands'. A country with 17,000 islands is also the home of hundreds of ancient Hindu temples making it the largest archipelago in the world.

Situated in the Pacific Ocean, this country has a lot to explore, and for Indians, this paradise allows Visa on arrival (VOA), so without juggling much between the visa procedure, you can embark on a cherished journey.

Visa Procedure and Requirements:

In the past few years, Indonesia has become one of the most beloved destinations all over the world, including America and Europe. Boosting its travel and tourism, Indonesia provides Visa on Arrival (VOA) or E-visa to more than 100 countries, including India. So, if you're also planning to travel to the Island nation, this VOA will be your ticket to the wonderland.

For Indians, the Indonesia Government provides e-Visa for the following purposes:

1. Tourism visits 2. Government officials' visits 3. Business talks and meeting visits 4. Purchasing goods visits 5. Transit

For tourism, you can opt any of these 5 categories:

  •  Tourist Single Entry Visitor Visa - 60 days
  • B1 - Tourism (Visa on Arrival) - 30 days
  • D1 - Tourism Multiple Entry Visa - 5 years
  • D1 - Tourism Multiple Entry Visa - 1 year
  • D1 - Tourism Multiple Entry Visa - 2 years

Most tourists prefer to take a Visa on Arrival, which is available for 14 to 30 days without extension. However, Indonesia has such a vibrant culture and ample natural wonders to explore that people who do remote works often remain in the country for 3 to 6 months or more using other tourism visa categories.

Tourism (VOA) Process:

The Indonesian government launched the Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA) program in 2022 to provide an easier entry process for foreign travellers, although this visa is not extendable.

Your first step to apply for the eVOA is to fill out the application form through the official website . You can opt for a Visa on arrival after reaching the airport as well, but nowadays tourists do not prefer to wait in line at the airport.

  • Documents Required:

- Filled visa application form signed by the applicant. - 1 latest passport-size photograph (white background) pasted on designated space - Passport with a minimum of 2 blank pages and a least 6 months validity from the date of departure from Indonesia - 1 Passport copy - Statement of purpose to visit addressing to Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi - Proof of health insurance/health protocol statement letter - Return ticket - Proof of funds to support your trip

You also have to pay a Visa Fee of Rs. 8,088/ after the document submission process.

Travel Logistics:

Situated on the equator, Indonesia has a tropical climate, which is why most tourists prefer to visit the Island nation in the dry season, that is from May to September. However, if you are a backpacker or planning a budget-friendly trip and love rain, October to April will be your ideal time to take this trip.

Indonesia is a wallet-friendly nation for Indians as well, and you can find flights starting from Rs 25,000 and upwards.

The cheapest way to reach this country is by air, as a road trip and a cruise trip can cost you a considerable amount of money. Indonesia has two major international airports: one is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang (just at the outskirts of Jakarta), and the second one is Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. A few other airports like Juanda Airport in Surabaya, and Hasanudin Airport in Makassar serve international tourists but have fewer flights.

Usually, flights from New Delhi to Bali airport take 7 to 8 hours, which prompts tourists to choose this country over others.

If you want a leisure trip on cruise and ferries, you can book your seat from Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines as there is no direct service from India.

Indonesia has a well-connected internal transportation system including public and private options. In rural areas, you can opt for bike taxis, cycle rickshaws, buses, shared mini buses, and intercity trains. In urban areas, metro buses, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), and Light Rail Transit (LRT) are available.

Indonesia has some amazing accommodation options which will make you fall in love with the country. Situated along the sea, there are multiple options to cater to your budget starting from Rs 700 per night to Rs 10,000 and more. Consider booking your stay in advance through online platforms like Booking.com, Airbnb, or Hostelworld.com. You can find some boutique hotels or luxurious guesthouses in less touristy areas in an affordable price range.

Indian currency is strong, compared to the Indonesian Currency Rupiah, allowing Indian travelers to enjoy the trip without spending much out of pocket. As of May 6, 2024, there are almost 191 Indonesian rupiahs to Rs 1. Thus, you can easily plan a 15-day trip for under 1 lakh including all your expenses.

Bahasa Indonesia is the official language and is spoken throughout the country. However, people working in the tourism sector and living in metro cities are well-spoken in English as well. Although it's always better and fun to learn a few words from their language to make your experience more engaging. You can pick up a few words like Selamat Siang (good day), Selamat Sore (good afternoon), Selamat Malam (good evening or night), Apa Kabar (How are you), Maaf (sorry).

Discover Treasures of Indonesia:

Indonesia, also known as the 'Emerald of the Equator', is known for its diverse landscape, stunning beaches, delicious seafood, and rich cultural history. The place is home to more than hundreds of temples, including the Centuries-old Prambanan temple, which is also a UNESCO heritage site.

The world's largest Buddhist temple 'Borobudur Temple', dating from the 8th and 9th centuries is also situated in central Java and is one of the most visited due to its sculptures and architecture. Another well-known Hindu temple that has become a major tourist spot is the Pura Lempuyang Luhur temple, which is represented by the highest pura at the peak of Mount Lempuyang and is situated in Bali. Indonesia is the perfect blend of unique culture and nature. While on one side, you will find city skylines throughout the country, on the other, you will have the chance to delve into unique locations like Menjangan Island, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and Kalimantan.

One of the major attractions here is Bali which is known for its cultural festivals, rich coral reefs, floral, and faunal ecosystems and its majestic views. Bali is also a surfing hotspot and offers numerous water sports to make your trip adventurous. Teeming with mesmerising and breathtaking natural views, ancient temples, greenery, and ocean- this place will give your soul another life.

Yogyakarta is another major tourist destination known as the cultural heartland of the island of Java. With its architectural wonders, it also has vibrant markets and cultural festivals to delve into. To make your adventurous souls full of memories, you can visit Komodo Island, another UNESCO world heritage site.

Indonesia is an ideal destination for rejuvenation with a few UNESCO-recognized national parks like Komodo National Park, Tangkahan National Park, Tanjung Puting National Park, and Ujung Kulon National Park which have captivating biodiversity and wildlife. There are also many fascinating villages and cultural fests that work as the garnish on the plate.

Having some of the world's best cuisines and culinary delights, Indonesia also attracts food lovers. A few must-try flavours will be Nasi Goreng, Sate, Soto, Gado-Gado, rendang, and Bakso. However, if you are a vegetarian, do not forget to keep your ready-to-cook food with you as you will have difficulty finding veg food there.

There is so much to do and watch that will convince your mind to stay longer or to plan a second trip. So just pack your bags and delve into this magical journey to find a connection with yourself and nature in Indonesia.

In 2023, there were approximately 606,439 Indian nationals who visited Indonesia. Although international tourism has increased in Indonesia in the past few years, COVID-19 has halted further progress in this sector, of which the majority of the international visitors were from the Asia Pacific countries.
