If you enjoy traveling, you’re likely interested in finding ways to save money — after all, travel isn’t always cheap. One option is using travel credit cards to earn rewards in the form of points or miles when making everyday purchases. Then, you can cash in your rewards for free or discounted flights and hotel stays.

Another way to reduce travel costs is by joining a membership-based program to access money-saving travel discounts. One such organization is AARP, which offers savings on shopping, entertainment, health, travel and more to its members — and you don’t have to be retired to take advantage of the benefits.

Here's how you can keep more money in your pocket by taking advantage of AARP travel discounts.

What is AARP and how much does it cost to join?

AARP is a nonprofit organization that advocates for Americans ages 50 and older. While the organization is popular among retirees, adults of all ages can join — and many do so to get discounts on everyday expenses.

You’ll need to pay a membership fee to take advantage of AARP’s money-saving perks. Here’s a breakdown of what it costs to join AARP:

One-year membership: $16.

One-year membership with auto-renew: $12.

Three-year membership: $43.

Five-year membership: $63.

You can save on AARP membership fees using the shopping cash-back portal Rakuten. Current offers include $6 back on a one-year membership, $10 back on a three-year membership and $20 back on a five-year membership. You must activate this offer before joining to qualify for cash-back earnings.

Samantha Rosen

You might say I'm an old soul.

I've been this way for as long as I can remember. I've never longed for a wild night out — instead, I'd much rather stay in and sit on my couch, catching up on my never-ending Netflix queue. I'll take a night of watching movies with my grandparents (hi, Gram and Jerry!) over a bar or club any day.

And now, my new American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) membership is really just the icing on the cake — and it's not just because it solidifies my status as an aspiring retiree. As an AARP member , I have access to pretty significant travel savings. And no, you don't need to be over 50 years old to get it. Let me explain.

For just $12, if you enroll in automatic renewal (or $9 per year when you commit to a five-year term with the Labor Day special ), you can get an AARP membership that comes with a host of great travel benefits. And travelers of all ages and employment can sign up, so there's really no reason not to have this on your radar.

Travel benefits

If I need to rent a car when I travel, I'll have access to savings from Avis, Budget and Zipcar, just to name a few. With Avis and Budget, for example, I can save a whopping 30% off base rates and get upgrades on certain vehicle types, as well as an additional driver at no cost.

If I'm considering a cruise in the future, I can choose from the AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia , Collette River Cruises or Grand European Travel . With Grand European Travel, for example, I can save $100 per person on over 30 different itineraries. The operator sets sail to popular destinations such as Italy, France, Greece, Spain, Morocco and Egypt.

Where the program really shines, however, is with its hotel benefits. There are over 60 participating hotel brands, including a few of Hilton's luxury brands (Waldorf Astoria, Conrad and Curio Collection), that confer discounts and even elite-like benefits to AARP members. At Conrad and Waldorf Astoria hotels, I can take advantage of a 10% discount off the best available rate and a 2 p.m. late checkout, when available.

If anything, this means I have a really good excuse to go back to one of my favorite hotels in the world: the Conrad Tokyo . Room rates usually go for around $545 a night, but with my 10% discount, I can pay $490.50 per night ... and put that $55 in savings toward sushi, ramen and udon .

I can also utilize this benefit at budget properties such as Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites and Wyndham. You'll have to book your stay directly with the hotel, but for a Hilton Diamond member like me, getting 10% off plus elite benefits is a major win in my book.

For Marriott and Hyatt loyalists, the program does fall flat. Neither brand has properties that participate in the program. Instead, the bulk of the AARP collection comprises hotels from Hilton, Choice, Wyndham and Radisson, among other lesser-known brands.

One of the most prominent AARP benefits is the ability to save up to $200 per year on round-trip, trans-Atlantic British Airways flights. Travelers can save $65 on World Traveller and World Traveller Plus fares, and as much as $200 when flying business class.

While British Airways might be the buzziest of the bunch, there are a handful of other airline and vacation package perks that could be a better fit for your travel plans. Tour company Collette, for example, offers $50 to $100 off select tours of seven days or more — and that includes everything from river cruises and rail itineraries to traditional land tours.

Just keep in mind that these benefits and partners can change. Xanterra Travel Collection — manages lodges in some of the most popular U.S. national parks — is no longer participating.

Other perks

Though we're obviously here for the fun travel deals and discounts, an AARP membership comes with many other benefits. You can save 20% on a Medjet membership; get 10% discounts at major restaurant chains including Carrabba's Italian Grill, Outback Steakhouse and Bonefish Grill; and even save money on cellphone plans, home security plans and Audible memberships.

If you're under 50, just keep in mind that you'll have an "associate" membership, not the full AARP membership . That means you won't get access to age-restricted insurance products or other benefits limited by the vendors.

You don't need to be a mathematician to know that it doesn't take much for the membership to pay for itself. For just $1 month, I could save approximately $50 at my favorite hotel in the world, between $65 and $200 on flights to London and even earn 50 points for every dollar spent on Walgreens-branded health and wellness products, to say nothing of the discounts on car rentals and restaurants.

Depending on your travel style, interests and budget, you can easily maximize an AARP membership. Just one trip could make the membership worthwhile for years.

A membership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is often overlooked as a great resource for travel discounts and benefits. In fact, an AARP membership can provide members with big savings across a wide variety of travel categories.

If you’re like most people, you’re probably thinking that, since you aren’t retired, you aren’t eligible for an AARP membership and the travel benefits that come with it. Well, that’s where you’re mistaken!

In this post we breakdown how you, too, can be eligible for an AARP membership, and the travel savings that come along with it.

AARP was founded in 1958 with the mission to “empower people to choose how they live as they age.” It is an influential lobbying group in the U.S. focusing largely on issues affecting the elderly. AARP sells paid memberships and markets insurance products and other services to its members.

Their flagship membership program provides dozens of discounts and perks and has attracted over 38 million members as of 2018.

Many people are under the impression that only retired people, or the elderly, are eligible for an AARP membership — but this is simply not true.

AARP used to offer 2 types of memberships: the standard membership for those who were 50 and older, and associate memberships for those who had not yet reached the age of 50.

Now, AARP offers just 1 membership option , and regardless if you’ve reached age 50 or not, you can join, too! Better yet, AARP memberships are just $16 a year ($12 if you opt for the auto-renew plan), and you can add a spouse or partner for free.

Bottom Line:  Many people are under the impression that they have to be over the age of 50 to join the AARP program, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone is eligible for an AARP membership, no matter what your age is.

So now that you know you’re eligible for an AARP membership, does that mean you should automatically sign up? Are the travel benefits actually worth it? Here are some ways that an AARP membership can save you money on your travel expenses.

General Travel

AARP has partnered with the online travel platform Expedia to offer the AARP Travel Center by Expedia . The Travel Center functions just like the standard Expedia website, allowing users to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and other activities, but also includes all items that are eligible for an AARP discount.

British Airways Plane on a Runway

One of the most popular AARP travel benefits is the ability to save quite a bit of money on British Airways flights . Those who have an AARP membership and book through the AARP British Airways discount page can score a $65 discount on all round-trip economy tickets and a $200 discount on all round-trip business class tickets.

Better yet, this discount is valid on British Airways-operated flights and BA codeshare flights, including those operated by American Airlines and Iberia Airlines.

Hot Tip:  Utilizing 1 British Airways $65 economy flight discount would cover your membership fees for over 4 years! An AARP membership is a no-brainer even if you fly with British Airways once a year.

Your AARP membership won’t just save you money on your flights — members can also receive discounts at thousands of hotels worldwide, including up to 15% off at hotel chains  such as Hilton , Best Western , Radisson , and Wyndham .

Rental Cars

AARP memberships can net you up to a 30% discount on car rentals from companies like Avis , Budget , and Payless, as well as select free vehicle upgrades, discounted GPS rates, and an additional driver at no cost.

Group of people dining at a restaurant

When you’re traveling, you’ve got to eat, and AARP can regularly save you money on restaurants too. AARP memberships offer 10% to 15% off at restaurant chains like Bonefish Grill, Carrabba’s, Corner Bakery Cafe, Denny’s, Outback Steakhouse, and many more.

Entertainment

AARP members can save on their entertainment purchases, too, with merchants like Regal Cinemas and Ticketmaster. With Ticketmaster specifically, members can save up to 40% on tickets to select shows and events, and offers also include 2-for-1 tickets, Me + 3 (4-packs), and special events with select tickets under $40.

Now that you know anyone can be eligible for an AARP membership , and some of the great travel benefits that come along with it, you may be wondering if the membership is worth it. But given that the annual membership price is just $16 a year ($12 with auto-renewal), it is hard to imagine how it wouldn’t be.

Between savings on British Airways flights, hotels, rental cars , and popular restaurant chains, if you’re someone who can take advantage of some of the discounts offered, you can easily offset the cost of your annual membership. If your worried people might snicker at you when you pull out your AARP card, they won’t be snickering for long when you tell them how much money you’re saving!

AARP Travel Insurance International: Your Guide to Secure Adventures Abroad

Traveling internationally can offer enriching experiences and lifetime memories, but it also comes with its set of uncertainties, especially in today’s dynamic world. Health emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage are just a few of the incidents that can disrupt even the most meticulously planned trips. This is why many travelers, particularly seniors, are considering travel insurance as an essential part of their travel planning. AARP provides travel insurance options designed to cater to the unique needs of its members, ensuring peace of mind when venturing abroad.

A passport, plane ticket, and a map on a table with a world globe in the background

As the global landscape continuously changes due to circumstances like the Covid-19 pandemic, travel insurance has evolved to address new concerns. AARP travel insurance plans offer comprehensive coverage that safeguards travelers against unforeseen medical expenses and provides assistance during medical emergencies overseas. The benefits extend beyond health, with policies covering trip cancellations, interruptions, and even logistics associated with accommodations and travel itineraries. For AARP members, these plans are tailored to include considerations for the challenges seniors may face when traveling internationally.

Key Takeaways

  • Travel insurance is essential for handling unexpected incidents during international travel.
  • AARP offers specialized travel insurance policies for seniors that include coverage for medical emergencies and trip cancellations.
  • Evaluating and choosing the right AARP travel insurance plan requires understanding the intricate details and benefits of the policy.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a critical component for any international itinerary, providing financial protection against a myriad of potential issues. The right policy ensures peace of mind during your travels.

Types of Travel Insurance

Travel insurance policies come in various forms, catering to different aspects of your journey. Trip cancellation insurance protects your investment if you must cancel your travels due to emergencies, offering refunds for pre-paid expenses. For concerns about health, medical coverage within a travel insurance policy safeguards against unforeseen medical expenses abroad. Policies may also include provisions for lost luggage, evacuation, and even accidental death.

Evaluating Coverage Needs

Determining the right level of coverage involves assessing the nature of your trip, along with personal risk factors. Consider the total cost of your trip to decide if trip cancellation insurance is prudent. For health emergencies, verify if your existing health plan extends medical insurance for international travel , or if an additional policy is necessary. Always review the policy details to understand limitations and exclusions, ensuring that the coverage aligns with your specific travel needs.

  • Medical Expense Benefits : Ensure policies offer substantial coverage for treatments.
  • Medical Evacuation : Verify there is adequate coverage for possible repatriation.
  • Cancellation Policy : Check if the insurance offers cancel for any reason benefits to account for the unpredictability of the pandemic.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Adhering to global and local health guidelines is imperative for international travel during the pandemic.

  • Immunizations : Stay informed about required vaccinations for travel to your destination.
  • Testing Requirements : Understand and comply with pre-departure and return Covid-19 testing regulations.
  • Hygiene Practices : Maintain frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitizers.
  • Wearing Masks : Use masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, especially where social distancing is not possible.

Travelers need to proactively manage their health and stay informed about the evolving travel restrictions to ensure safety during international travel amidst Covid-19.

Dealing with Trip Cancellations

When a traveler faces the need to cancel a trip, understanding the intricacies of cancellation policies and navigating the insurance claims process is crucial. These steps ensure that they are adequately compensated according to their trip insurance coverage terms.

Cancellation Policies

The conditions under which a traveler can cancel their trip and receive a refund are defined by the cancellation policy. This policy varies between insurers but typically covers events like illness, family emergencies, or unforeseen circumstances. To invoke a cancellation policy, the reason must be listed as a covered peril within the traveler’s insurance policy. It’s essential to review the policy details to determine what is considered a valid reason for cancellation.

Examples of covered reasons :

  • Sudden medical emergencies
  • Death in the family
  • Severe weather disrupting travel plans

Non-covered reasons might include :

  • Change of mind
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless otherwise specified)

Note: Travelers should review the specifics of their policy since coverage can vary greatly.

Insurance Claims Process

Once a traveler establishes that their reason for cancellation is covered, they should initiate the claims process by contacting customer support as outlined by their insurance provider . The process typically involves submitting a claim form and providing supporting documents to substantiate the reason for cancellation.

Required documentation may include :

  • Medical records or death certificates
  • Documentation of unforeseen events like natural disasters
  • Proof of expenses and payments made

Claims are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, with the reimbursement amount subject to the terms of the policy. It is imperative for the claimant to provide thorough and accurate documentation to facilitate a smooth claims process.

Accommodations and Logistics

A suitcase with travel stickers sits next to a passport and international travel insurance documents on a table, ready for a trip

When it comes to international travel, selecting the right accommodations and arranging transportation are crucial steps in planning a successful trip. AARP members can benefit from exclusive discounts and deals which can enhance the travel experience for both adults and children, including those under 2 years of age.

Hotels and Resorts

AARP collaborates with various hotel chains, including Wyndham, to provide members with special rates on accommodations. Whether one seeks a luxury suite or a comfortable room for a family stay, travelers can enjoy up to 10% off select hotels . It is important for travelers to consider location, accessibility, and the amenities offered when booking hotels and resorts to ensure a pleasant and convenient stay.

  • Location: Choose hotels close to your destination’s attractions or business hubs.
  • Amenities: Look for complimentary breakfast, free WiFi, and other amenities that can enhance your stay.
  • Accessibility: Ensure the hotel provides transportation services or is located near public transit options.

Transportation Arrangements

Securing timely and reliable transportation is central to a smooth travel experience. AARP provides resources for booking flights, where members might obtain discounts ranging from $65-$200 off round-trip tickets purchased online. When considering flights, adults traveling with children or an infant under 2 should verify the airline’s policies for family travel to ensure all needs are met.

  • Flights: Choose flights with beneficial rates for AARP members and appropriate provisions for younger travelers.
  • Ground Transportation: Determine whether a rental car, shuttle service, or public transport best fits your itinerary and budget.
  • International Travel: Ensure your mobile plan has international coverage or consider obtaining an international travel phone plan for seamless communication.

By addressing both accommodations and logistics with attention to these details, travelers can lay a solid foundation for a trouble-free international journey.

Protecting Your Valuables

A sturdy safe sits on a polished wooden desk, surrounded by passports, jewelry, and cash. A world map hangs on the wall behind, with pins marking various destinations

When traveling, safeguarding one’s belongings is crucial. Travel insurance and homeowners policies offer certain protections that can be vital in mitigating the financial loss of valuable items.

Insurance for Lost Luggage

Travel insurance often includes coverage for lost luggage, providing a safety net if one’s belongings are misplaced during transit. For instance, some policies cover the replacement of the contents of lost bags as well as reimbursement for emergency purchases. To file a claim, they typically require a detailed report from the airline or transportation provider confirming the loss.

  • Coverage Limits : Policies have specific limits on payouts for lost luggage.
  • Documentation : Save purchase receipts; they may be required to substantiate a claim.

Homeowners Policy and Travel

A homeowners policy can extend to personal property lost while traveling. However, the coverage may be subject to the policy’s deductible and limits.

  • Off-Premises Coverage : Personal belongings are often covered worldwide, but it’s essential to confirm with the provider.
  • Damage or Theft : While a homeowners policy may cover stolen personal items, some high-value items might require additional riders for full protection.

In summary, it is vital to assess individual needs and understand the extent of coverage provided by travel insurance and homeowners policies. Reading both policies carefully to understand their terms and exclusions can prevent surprises and provide peace of mind while traveling.

Special Considerations for Seniors

When considering international travel, seniors must pay careful attention to their medical coverage and any pre-existing conditions that could affect their journey. This is especially relevant when obtaining travel insurance, as seniors often need more comprehensive coverage.

Medical Coverage

Seniors should ensure their travel insurance offers substantial medical coverage , as health emergencies can occur unexpectedly, leading to significant medical bills. AARP often recommends such coverage simply because Medicare may not provide adequate coverage internationally. Thorough travel insurance can fill this gap, covering expenses for hospital stays, medical treatments, and even medical evacuation if necessary. It’s crucial to verify the specifics of what the policy covers , particularly when traveling abroad.

Traveling with Pre-Existing Conditions

Many seniors travel with pre-existing conditions, which makes finding the right insurance policy a critical step. It’s important to find a travel insurance plan that specifically covers pre-existing conditions to avoid any potential financial strain. Travelers should be aware that not all policies include this coverage automatically. Declarations must be made, and sometimes, additional screenings are required. Researching and opting for a policy that covers pre-existing conditions can prevent unexpected costs related to health issues that may arise. For members of Kaiser Permanente, it’s advisable to look into whether they offer international coverage that accommodates these pre-existing health concerns.

Making Informed Insurance Choices

A person researching travel insurance options, comparing coverage and prices online, with a map and passport nearby

When exploring international travel insurance, it’s crucial to make decisions based on thorough comparisons and credible expert evaluations. These steps ensure that the chosen policy appropriately covers your needs.

Comparison Shopping

Consumers should start by examining various policies available through comparators like SquareMouth or platforms like InsureMyTrip.com. It’s important to assess the coverage details and premiums to find a policy that balances cost with comprehensive protection. For example, Megan Moncrief from SquareMouth emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuances of each policy before making a selection. When searching for the best international travel insurance , ensure that the policy covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and other potential mishaps.

Consulting Expert Reviews

In addition to personal research, consulting expert reviews can provide an additional layer of confirmation. Organizations like the Consumer Federation of America often review and rate travel insurance policies, bringing to light the strengths and weaknesses of various offerings. For those seeking to make an informed choice, reviews such as these can be pivotal. Understanding the fine print and service ratings of a travel insurance policy is also essential, as clarity on these helps avoid unexpected disappointments during a crisis. Midwest Luxury Publishing and Groom Lake Media might also provide analyses and insights into the value of different travel insurance products available on the market.

Travel Etiquette and Practices

Traveling can be both exhilarating and stressful, but abiding by certain etiquette can significantly improve the experience for oneself and fellow travelers. Grasping the nuances of behavior on flights and hotel stays is imperative to navigating the complexities of international travel.

Behavior on Flights

  • Adults and Children : Adults are expected to act as role models for children during a flight. It’s important for adults to ensure that children remain seated and their activities do not disrupt the comfort of other passengers. For children under a certain age, typically two years, the option to fly in lap or in seat with an appropriate child restraint system exists—decisions here often hinge on both safety and airline policies.
  • Group Travel : Traveling with a group, particularly when you have more than 6 people total , necessitates prior coordination with the airline to facilitate seating arrangements and ensure smooth boarding.

For detailed etiquette guidelines while flying, consider reviewing Good Airline Etiquette .

Hotel Stay Etiquette

  • Booking Rooms : When booking hotel rooms, especially for large groups or families, clarify the number of travelers and room needs, including the provision of extra beds if necessary.
  • Hotel Conduct : All travelers are expected to respect hotel property, abide by check-in and check-out times, and maintain decorum in common areas to ensure a serene environment for all guests.

Exploration of international travel etiquette can enhance your journey and reflects respect for the cultures and practices encountered on your travels.

Practical Travel Tips

A passport, a map, and a travel insurance card laid out on a table. A suitcase packed with essentials sits nearby

When planning international travel, certain practical tips ensure a smooth experience from packing to navigating airports and accommodations.

Packing Essentials

Packing for an international trip requires careful consideration of luggage content. One should ensure that all essential documents , like passport and airline tickets, are easily accessible. For a streamlined packing list, travelers can consult an international travel pack list . Items should be versatile and appropriate for the destination’s climate and cultural norms.

  • Clothing: Pack clothes that can be layered and are suitable for various occasions.
  • Electronics: Chargers and travel adapters for different outlets.
  • Personal items: Minimal toiletries, medications, and travel-sized essentials.

Navigating Airports and Hotels

Airports present a maze of check-ins, security, and gate changes. Staying informed about the flight status and airport layout reduces stress. Upon arrival, understanding the essentials for international travel can streamline the transition from the airport to hotel accommodations.

  • Flight monitoring: Use apps to check real-time flight changes.
  • Hotel transition: Plan transportation from the airport to your hotel ahead of time.

In summary, a sound understanding of packing essentials and the dynamics of airports and hotels aids in a hassle-free journey. For more detailed insights on how to pack effectively, consider using a travel checklist for international travel . With proper preparation, travelers can focus on the excitement of their upcoming international experiences.

Understanding Policy Fine Print

A traveler carefully reads AARP international travel insurance policy fine print, surrounded by maps and travel documents

When purchasing travel insurance, the clarity in understanding the policy’s fine print is crucial. It dictates the extent of coverage and the limitations thereof, ensuring policyholders are aware of their rights and the insurer’s obligations.

Reading the Contract

The key document that should be thoroughly reviewed before committing to a travel insurance policy is the contract . It outlines all the terms and conditions that govern the coverage. Policyholders must look for specifics such as the coverage caps , which indicate the maximum amount the insurer will pay for claims, and required time delays which can affect the admissibility of a claim for events such as baggage loss or trip cancellation.

Identifying Exclusions

Exclusions in a travel insurance policy are scenarios or circumstances where coverage is not provided. These exclusions may include pre-existing medical conditions or injuries sustained from high-risk activities. For example, when examining AARP’s travel insurance offerings , policyholders should pay special attention to how the policy defines a ‘terrorist act,’ as the definition and time frame in which the act occurred relative to the trip’s schedule could drastically influence the coverage. Identifying these exclusions is essential to ensure there are no surprises during the claims process.

Budgeting for Your Trip

A traveler sits at a desk with a map, calculator, and notebook, planning and budgeting for an international trip

When planning travel with AARP, it is essential to meticulously estimate the overall cost of the trip, including accommodations and flights, to ensure a budget-friendly experience to the chosen destination.

Estimating Total Costs

Accommodation: Determining the cost of room accommodations depends on the destination and the type of lodging AARP members prefer. Prices can vary significantly, from budget-friendly hotels to more luxurious options. Members should research AARP’s travel benefits for potential discounts on accommodations.

  • Flight Costs: Airfare is often a substantial part of a travel budget. Prices fluctuate based on the season, demand, and how far in advance tickets are purchased. AARP members can take advantage of exclusive flight discounts through AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia.

Finding Discounts and Rewards

Members can reduce travel expenses significantly by accessing special travel discounts through AARP. For example, members can save up to 30% off on base rates for car rentals and even more on other travel deals.

  • AARP Discounts: Utilize reductions in costs with AARP’s negotiated travel discounts. This can include savings on hotel bookings, car rentals, cruises, and package tours.
  • Rewards Programs: Travelers should also look into rewards programs offered by airlines, hotels, and car rental companies, which can provide perks like free nights or flight upgrades that further offset costs.

Emergency Services Abroad

When traveling internationally, access to prompt health emergency care and medical coverage contingency plans are essential. Obtaining comprehensive travel insurance can be the difference between a minor hiccup and a major ordeal.

Access to Health Care

In a health emergency, immediate access to health care is critical. Travel insurance often includes access to a network of hospitals and doctors. Policyholders typically receive assistance in locating the nearest medical facilities, ensuring they receive care when needed. Confirm that your trip insurance covers health emergencies to avoid substantial out-of-pocket costs.

Emergency Evacuations

In the event of a serious medical emergency or local crisis, evacuation to a facility capable of providing appropriate care or repatriation may be necessary. Emergency evacuations can be logistically complex and expensive, with costs easily running into the tens of thousands of dollars. It is crucial that your medical coverage includes sufficient emergency evacuation benefits, not only covering the cost but also providing support during transportation arrangements. Check if your policy’s coverage includes flights back to your home country if medically necessary.

Seasonal Travel Considerations

When planning international travel with AARP options, travelers should consider the fluctuating factors that come with different seasons, including weather patterns and travel insurance requirements, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Best Times to Travel

  • Spring (March-May): During these months, destinations such as Japan or the Netherlands are ideal, with attractions like cherry blossoms and tulip fields. Travel insurance rates can be competitive, so travelers should book in advance.
  • Summer (June-August): European destinations like France and Italy are popular. Travel insurance may include higher premiums due to peak tourist season, and one should be mindful of the potential Covid-19 restrictions that might fluctuate.
  • Autumn (September-November): Destinations like New Zealand and Argentina are entering their prime. It’s a good period to find reasonable travel insurance rates before the holiday season rush.
  • Winter (December-February): For those seeking winter escapes, locations like Thailand offer warm climates, while others may wish for snow in Switzerland. Always check for weather-related coverage in travel insurance policies during these months due to higher risks of delays and cancellations.

Season-Specific Insurance Tips

Travelers need to consider season-specific variables that can affect their travel insurance choices:

  • Hurricane Season (June-November): For tropical destinations, comprehensive travel insurance that covers weather-related cancellations is vital.
  • Covid-19 Considerations: Some countries might mandate proof of health insurance during the pandemic, and policies should cover Covid-19 related medical expenses and trip alterations.
  • Ski Season: If the destination involves winter sports, travelers need to ensure that their policy includes coverage for sports-related injuries and equipment loss.
  • Cultural / National Events: Major events can affect travel insurance costs. Policies should be secured well before dates like Carnival in Brazil or Lunar New Year in several Asian countries to avoid inflated rates.

You don't have to be retired (or old) to join AARP — here's why you'll want to be a member at almost any age

You can join the aarp at any age. it's cheap and the discounts can be well worth it..

thumbnail

If you're trying to save money, joining the AARP® (American Association of Retired Persons) may not be your first thought, especially if you're not retired. But people in their 20s, 30s and 40s are doing just that because you don't have to be retired or over the age of 50 to join.

An AARP membership unlocks discounts on flights, hotels, restaurants , cell phone service, auto insurance , homeowners insurance and so much more. And it's affordable — AARP membership only costs $12 for the first year with automatic renewal and $16 per year after that. You can save even more if you sign up for a multi-year AARP membership plan.

If you're not sure if an AARP membership is worth it for you, there are a few deals that by themselves make the cost more than worth it.

Who should get an AARP membership right now?

An AARP membership is great for anyone who's always on the hunt for the best deal. Its discounts can help when you shop for a rental car , hotel , or a better deal on your car insurance , and often the deal is good enough to more than offset the cost of membership.

But it can be a headache if you're trying to wrap your head around all the possible ways a membership with AARP can save you money . A simpler way to approach the decision is to find a single discount that will more than cover the membership fee, and then consider all of the other savings as a bonus.

Here are three discounts that can make an AARP membership worth it by themselves.

AT&T customers

If you're an AT&T customer or are looking at switching cell phone providers be sure to factor in the potential AARP discount into the equation. AARP members are eligible for an up to $10 monthly discount per line with AT&T .

That's $120 in savings a year, which is ten times what you pay for your first annual membership. And if you have multiple lines, the savings can add up even more. The discount applies to accounts with up to five lines and also includes waived select activation fees, waived select upgrade fees and 15% off eligible accessories.

Pro tip: Be sure to pay your monthly cell phone bills with a credit card that provides cell phone protection , such as the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card which provides $600 cell phone protection (subject to a $25 deductible; see rates and fees ) .

Anyone booking a British Airways flight

AARP members can purchase British Airways tickets for $65 to $200 off . Even on the low end, taking advantage of this benefit just once would offset the cost of a five-year membership.

With this benefit, AARP members get:

  • $65 off eligible round-trip economy flights (not including basic economy)
  • $65 off eligible round-trip premium economy flights
  • $200 off eligible round-trip business class flights

Technically this offer is only valid through March 31, 2024. However, it has been around for many years now and has been renewed annually.

Frequent travelers

There are a lot of ways an AARP membership can help you save money on your next vacation with discounts at restaurants, hotels and rental car companies.

A wide range of hotels offer 5% to 20% off for AARP members and some even include late checkout on top of the discount. Avis and Budget offer up to 30% off car rentals for AARP members, and you can also get $20 off an annual Zipcar membership.

With your AARP card, you can also save on food at a bunch of popular national restaurant chains including Bonefish Grill, Carrabba's, Moe's, Jamba and more. You can also search for local coupons and deals at specific restaurants and franchise locations nearby.

Other benefits

While these are some of the easiest-to-use benefits, many more perks that come with an AARP membership. For example, you can receive exclusive discounts on event tickets through Ticketmaster, prescription medications, eyewear, vision exams and hearing care. There are also opportunities to save on various insurance products, including special discounts for bundling home and auto insurance . By completing the AARP Smart Driver course, members may qualify for even more savings on auto insurance.

AARP membership requirements

AARP memberships are available to anyone 18 or older, the only caveat is certain deals may be age-restricted, such as some insurance products.

An AARP membership costs $16 a year, but you can save on the first year or lock in savings with a multi-year membership:

  • $12 the first year (with automatic renewal)
  • $43 for a three-year membership
  • $63 for a five-year membership

There are also additional membership deals available. For example, military members and veterans can save up to 43% on an AARP membership. Plus, you can share your AARP with another adult in your household for free.

Are there any real benefits to joining aarp.

AARP members can take advantage of discounts across a wide range of purchases, including insurance, travel and entertainment.

Is AAA or AARP better for discounts?

Family caregivers are struggling at work, need support from employers to stay, AARP finds

aarp member travel insurance

Family caregivers are struggling to work while juggling caregiving responsibilities, which could threaten a large part of the workforce unless employers are more supportive, a new study reports.

AARP and S&P Global surveyed 1,200 self-identified caregivers who work full-time or part-time at large U.S. companies and provide at least six hours of care each week to an adult in order “to understand caregivers’ experiences in the workplace and the significance of employer benefits for balancing work and family care obligations,” the organizations said in a press release.

An analysis of a new study released Thursday by AARP and S&P Global “underscores the importance for employers to implement policies and benefits that are friendly and supportive of adult caregiving to retain this critical segment of employees in the workforce,” the two organizations said.

The need is critical as the nation's population of adults ages 65 and older is projected to surpass the population of children by 2030, the organizations said.

What is a family caregiver?

AARP research has found that of the more than 48 million family caregivers nationwide, 61% are working while juggling caregiving responsibilities, including assisting with daily living activities, medical or nursing tasks, coordinating services, transportation, shopping and advocating for their loved one. Most family caregivers provide at least 20 hours of care each week, equal to an unpaid part-time job, according to AARP. These caregivers are providing more than $600 billion in unpaid care for their loved ones, AARP has said.

“As Americans grow older, more families have more members with caregiving needs – like young children and their parents – while also holding down a job or career," Susan Reinhard, AARP senior vice president and director of the Public Policy Institute said in a statement about the report, which was provided exclusively to USA TODAY ahead of a media briefing Thursday.

"The majority of family caregivers juggle their responsibilities for loved ones every hour of every day," Reinhard said. "As a result, working family caregivers are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of daily tasks. At AARP, we’re engaging the private sector to be sure companies big and small are thinking through possible solutions to better support their employees who are family caregivers."

Family caregivers "need and deserve greater support from their own employers,” Reinhard also said in a press release. “As our population ages, it’s critical that employers support family caregivers in the workforce with the policies, such as paid leave, that can ease their everyday burdens.”

What did the study find?

An analysis of the study, "Working while caregiving: It's complicated," conducted in 2023 by AARP and S&P Global shows that the unpredictable nature of caregiving for an adult is among the biggest stressors that caregivers face, the organizations said.

Here are some highlights:

  • 67% of family caregivers have difficulty balancing their jobs with caregiving duties.
  • 27% of working caregivers have shifted from full-time to part-time work or have reduced hours, while 16% have turned down a promotion.
  • 16% have stopped working entirely for a period of time — and 13% have changed employers — in order to meet caregiving responsibilities.
  • 80% of respondents agree that companies were more understanding of childcare issues than adult caregiving responsibilities. Study authors said that was particularly the case among caregivers who have an under-18 child in the home and therefore have recent experience of both situations.
  • Caregivers without children reported less satisfaction with company support than caregivers with children — 69% versus 89%, respectively.
  • Remote workers were more likely to feel penalized or discriminated against at work because of caregiving responsibilities compared to in-office or hybrid workers — 49% versus a combined average of 29%. Study authors said, "This may reflect employer challenges in assessing and engaging with remote employees’ work-life needs."
  • Among working caregivers providing more than 21 hours of care a week, 37% are experiencing significantly increased difficulty due to inflation. For those providing fewer than 10 hours of care, 25% say inflation has made providing care significantly more difficult.

“Despite the progress observed since 2020, the latest data shows the majority of employees with adult caregiving responsibilities continue to face barriers at balancing work and caregiving obligations and need greater support from employers through enhanced benefits and policies to stay engaged in the workforce,” said Alexandra Dimitrijevic, Co-chair of S&P Global Research Council in the press release. “Employers can help by paying forward-looking attention to employee needs and the demographics shift of the workforce in the coming years.”

Some employers are making progress

Since the last joint report by AARP and S&P Global’s in 2020, employers, "having become attuned to the needs of working parents over the past decade and especially during the pandemic, are now moving from awareness to action in providing support for employees with adult caregiving responsibilities," the organizations said.

According to the new report, access to a flexible work schedule at the time of caregiving increased from 32% in 2020 to 45% in 2023. The availability of caregiving policies or benefits also increased in every category except unpaid leave.

But the organizations said employers can provide more support. The report identifies industry best practices that companies can take to support caregivers, including:

  • Offer and support flexible schedules and flexible work locations (hybrid/remote).
  • Offer employer-supported access to support groups, career coaching and financial advising resources.
  • Offer paid leave specifically for caregivers and/or flexible leave that can be used to help with caregiving duties.
  • Host free sessions to highlight how caregiving employees can optimize employer benefits and policies, as a way to address the lack of awareness in using benefits.
  • Ask senior leaders to share their stories of how they have used the caregiver-supportive benefits and policies, signaling to both people managers and their teams that they are encouraged to use them.
  • Train people managers on caregiver-inclusive managerial practices. Ensure managers are aware of caregiver-supportive benefits and policies and message to their direct reports that it is safe to use them all without incurring career risk.
  • Start or support an Employee Resource Group for parents and caregivers or create a caregiving initiative across all ERGs.

Death and money: How do you talk to your parents about the uncomfortable conversation?

Federal administration offering some help

During a media briefing about the study on Thursday, Xavier Becerra, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said when it comes to caregiving, more Americans are realizing how much pressure is put on the shoulders of a few caring for their older relatives.

“Family caregivers are providing more support and have an even harder time getting the type of rest that they need as they care for their loved ones,” Becerra said. “It's becoming a real crisis for families in America.”

Becerra said more families are having trouble finding the help they need or can’t afford to pay for that care or get care at a facility “and have to take care of that burden themselves.”

Becerra said noted “the first-ever national strategy to support family caregivers, which we have been working across the board to implement. At the end of April, we took action to both improve the quality of care and strengthen support for caregivers, including those who make caregiving a profession and those who are doing the unpaid work of care at home as they support their loved one.”

That includes final rules to nursing home staffing standards and rules to improve access to care in Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program to home care services, he said.

It also includes an executive order last April signed by President Joe Biden, which included 50 directives to federal agencies to increase access to affordable, high-quality care, and provide support rising child care and family caregiving costs.

“It's going to take more than an administration,” Becerra said. “It'll take all of us; the voices of those who receive care and certainly the experience of caregivers.”

Congressional bill could help caregivers

A bill re-introduced in January by a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives could provide help in the form of a federal tax credit for eligible working family caregivers.

AARP has been working with legislators for eight years on previous versions of the bill. But senior AARP leaders in January told USA TODAY that they believe the time is finally right for it to become law – and bring relief to many caregivers, including members of Congress.

The bill has made no progress in Congress, but it does have more Congressional co-sponsors. In January, six senators and two representatives introduced the bill. It now has 33 additional sponsors in the House for a total of 39 in both chambers.

The Credit for Caring Act, if passed, would provide financial support for individual caregivers by providing up to a $5,000 nonrefundable federal tax credit for eligible working family caregivers, that would cover 30% of qualified expenses they incurred above $2,000.

AARP representatives had no new comment regarding the status of the bill, but Reinhard during the media briefing said the act could help caregivers.
