The Reviews Are In!

This is our third trip with Maui Snorkel Charters. Doug, Trish, and Mandy are so knowledgeable and friendly. They go out in the water with you and point out different fish and the turtles. The food is great and the snorkeling is superb. They will, take you on 4-5 different spots and weather permitting the backside of Molokini which has amazing views.

Mandy, Kiki and Captain Doug promised us that this morning would be THE BEST DAY EVER and boy, do they deliver their promises! It's my first time in Hawaii and I picked up their flyer off the wall outside of a local restaurant. Little did I know back then that they had the best offer amongst all their competitors even the ones recommended by our hotel.

Amazing service. If you are taking a snorkel tour by boat, Maui Snorkel Charters is the best available. New boat. Friendly crew. Great masks.

We went out the morning of January 25 (early part of whale season) and we're able to snorkel with the added bonus of whale watching. We saw about ten humpback whales and calves fluke slapping, fin waving, breaching, diving, etc.

Highly recommended!

Doug, Trish and Crew is absolutely No Ka Oi! We chartered them for a birthday group and it was by far the best experience ever. We visited the back side of Molokini and around to watch Humpback Whales. Do yourself a favor and try them out for the best personal experience. We became familiar with Maui Snorkel Charters when they donated their boat, crew and time to help clean the reef. Great time with great people!

Doug, Trish and crew are fantastic.  We've been out with them several times and they treat us like family.  No other tour I've ever been on caters to the customer like they do.   They always seem to find the fish, whales, dolphins, turtles and excitement.  Thanks so much for making our day the best ever!

We had an amazing time snorkeling with Maui Snorkel Charters! Everyone was very nice, the boat wasn't crowded, and we got to see multiple turtles. We snorkeled 5 separate times along the trip. I highly recommend snorkeling with this group!

If you're looking to go on a snorkeling adventure and want to see the most places in one trip, than look no further. I work on boats and this company is where its at. We stopped 5 times at different locations, where most boats stop once or twice at most. The captain and crew are so friendly and are very knowledgeable about the marine life and areas we stopped. I had been wanting g to do the backwall of Molokini for years and that finally happened with Maui Snorkel Charters. Thanks for the great experience.

Maui Snorkel Charters trip out of Kihei boat ramp is hands down the best snorkel trip we've ever been on in over 25 years of coming to Maui.  The crew are top notch and they certainly gave us our money's worth.  They limit the number of passengers to 18 which means you are not overcrowded when get into the water.

Wonderful family owned and operated business. Because they cater to smaller groups, participants get more snorkel time in the water than some of the large group charters. Our group was able to snorkel in five different areas with guides who were patient in teaching us what to do (it was our first time). They gave us interesting info about our snorkel sites and pointed out cool fish, starfish, turtles and an octopus during our outing.

The first time I snorkeled at Molokini Crater, I was eight years old and I was blown away by both the fish (beautiful!) and the slide off the boat (the stuff an eight year old’s dreams are made of).

Since then I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips and tours to find the best Molokini snorkeling tour experiences. And I’ve found some great ones.

Molokini crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater that is home to a marine life sanctuary as well as a bird sanctuary. The crater is thought to have been formed from a volcanic eruption 230,000 years ago. The island crater is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving as the crater has crystal clear water and great visibility as well as a large and varied fish population.

Want to jump right into the recommendations without reading the whole thing? We’ve got you covered with some of the best Molokini snorkeling tours: – Our absolute favorite tour departing from Wailea – Jump aboard a power raft from Kihei – This Molokini Catamaran tour from Ma’alaea Harbor in Central Maui is wonderful. Save 10% with our Promo Code! – A larger boat from Ma’alaea but a really family-friendly experience Plus we have more listed below!

Molokini Snorkeling Tour FAQs

Are snorkeling tours worth it.

We love snorkeling tours and think they are definitely worth it for a few reasons:

  • Get instructions and head out with an experienced guide: this is helpful and important whether you are new to snorkeling or you’ve done it a few times. A great guide can help make the experience even better and they can help you learn precautions that will keep you safe in the ocean.
  • Keep the reef safe: when snorkeling from the shore, it is easy to inadvertently damage coral and rock if you’re not careful. The coral is delicate and has been growing for thousands of years. It’s important to keep it safe!
  • Have a great time on the water: getting a view of Maui from the water is such a different perspective. Relaxing on a boat and getting to enjoy a few hours on the water with a knowledgeable guide talking story gives you memories you can take home.

Note: the only way to visit Molokini Crater is with a snorkeling tour. You cannot get there from the shore. Molokini Crater is a highlight of a trip to Maui (check out the other 32 things on our list of best things to do on Maui ).

What is the best time of day to snorkel Molokini Crater?

Normally, you’ll find that it’s best to snorkel Molokini Crater in the morning. Most tours leave in the morning in hopes of finding the calmest waters. In the afternoon, the tradewinds can kick up and the ocean conditions get rougher.

If you’re headed to Maui, make sure you review our ultimate Maui Guide . It has nearly everything you need to know to help you plan your trip. And it’s all free.

How long is the boat ride from Kihei to Molokini?

The great thing about leaving on a snorkeling trip from Kihei or Wailea is the ride to Molokini is really quick. From Wailea, the ride is around 15 minutes and from Kihei the ride is around 20 minutes!

Compared to a 45-minute ride from Ma’alaea Harbor, leaving from Kihei or Wailea is fast and efficient.

There’s a good chance you’ll need a car when you’re on Maui. We love to get ours with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . National carriers and no prepayment — it’s a winner!

Where do Molokini snorkeling tours depart from?

Molokini snorkeling tours depart from three different locations on Maui: Ma’alaea Harbor, Kihei Small Boat Ramp, and Maluaka Beach in Wailea.

Ma’alaea Harbor is in central Maui and is the furthest away from Molokini Crater but the most number of boats leave from there.

Kihei Small Boat Ramp and Maluaka Beach in Wailea are closer to Molokini Crater and are much more convenient for anyone staying in South Maui, but fewer boats leave from there.

We give you options for snorkeling tours departing from each location.

Is Turtle Town the same as Molokini Crater?

Many Molokini Crater snorkeling tours add a second stop on their trip at Turtle Town. But Turtle Town is not the same as Molokini Crater. Turtle Town is a snorkeling spot famous for turtle sightings that is located off the coast near Makena Landing . This stop is a nice compliment to Molokini Crater as you won’t see any sea turtles in the crater — but you will see fish, eels, and if you’re lucky, an octopus.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Kihei

Two great options leave from the Kihei Small Boat Harbor. And both are small boats — get ready for an adventure on a power raft.

Redline Rafting

Redline Rafting’s two-hour tour feels like an express ride in the best possible way. Jump on the raft and you’ll be out to the crater in 20 quick minutes. Once there you’ll have plenty of time to snorkel in the crater with your small group (the raft only holds 11 passengers!).

Their five-hour tour includes a little more excitement. Not only do you snorkel in Molokini Crater but you are also able to head to the back wall of the crater (weather permitting), which is an adventure. And you’ll spend some time at Turtle Town as well before having lunch and heading back to Kihei.

Check out our video of our snorkeling trip with Redline Rafting:

Makena Coast Charters

Also aboard a raft, Makena Coast Charters offers two tours.

During their two-hour tour , it’s similar to the Redline Rafting two-hour tour. This is an express route for people who are excited to get in the water at Molokini Crater. After a 20 minute ride to the crater, you’ll get an hour or more to explore the water.

Their four-hour tour loops in a stop at Turtle Town. You’ll first get roughly an hour to snorkel at Molokini Crater followed by another hour of snorkeling at Turtle Town. After snorkeling you’ll enjoy a meal and beverage service before they return you back to the small boat harbor.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Wailea

I don’t like to play favorites because all of the tours on this list are excellent, but we love the sunrise snorkel with Kai Kanani. While it is a very early departure, you get to spend some time in the crater before anyone else gets there. After snorkeling in the crater, you head to Turtle Town.

Kai Kanani leaves right from Maluaka Beach (which is stunning), but you should expect to get a little wet during the beach loading. Once you’re on board, you’re off on a luxurious adventure. The crew is fantastic and you’re treated to breakfast, hot drinks, and a beautiful catamaran.

If you’re not an early riser, they also have a mid-morning snorkel which is also fantastic. The same tour just a few hours later.

In case it’s not clear, we just love this tour and so do our kids. Check out our experience with them (and our stay at the Grand Wailea).

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tours from Ma’alaea

A trip to Ma’alaea is a further drive from South Maui and it takes longer to get to Molokini Crater on the boat, but it’s a great option for people who like a larger boat (no rafts!), or need an easier accessible boat (no beach loading).

Sail Maui – 10% OFF!

We’ve done several Sail Maui tours and we’ve had an excellent time every time. Their Molokini Snorkeling tour is no exception. Leave for the 4.5 hour tour from Ma’alaea Harbor aboard their Paragon II boat. While the boat ride to Molokini is longer from Ma’alaea, they make use of it by offering you a delightful breakfast. After snorkeling at Molokini Crater, enjoy lunch on your ride back to Ma’alaea.

This is a great option for passengers of all ages as the boat is comfortable and getting onboard from the harbor is easy.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Fair Winds II

Family fun is the focus on the Four Winds Molokini Crater tour . It’s the largest boat on this list, but they have some specific amenities that can make going with a larger group totally worth it. Note: their boat capacity is 149 people but they advertise that they keep their tours smaller than that to ensure comfortability.

On their Molokini snorkeling tour, you’ll get to snorkel Molokini Crater but kids are front and center on the tour. There is a waterslide (that even adults enjoy), a glass-bottom viewing room, cookies, temporary tattoos, and more. In the glass bottom room, a few kids or adults can take a peek at what’s underwater, without actually having to get into the water.

Best Snorkeling Tours in Kihei and South Maui ( that aren’t to Molokini Crater )

While we love snorkeling to Molokini Crater, sticking closer to shore is also a great option. We have two suggestions for snorkeling tours that don’t include a boat, but still have great snorkeling.

Best Molokini Snorkeling Tour

Maui SUP and Snorkel Adventures

Get in some morning exercise along with a snorkeling tour on an SUP adventure and snorkeling tour . This two-hour tour is private and includes both your SUP rental as well as your snorkeling gear. Head out from Makena Landing (near Turtle Town) and paddle the scenic coastline. As it’s a private tour, it can be geared to your personal activity level so you can go as fast (or as slow) as you want on the SUP. If you haven’t tried SUP yet, your guide will give you a lesson and help you navigate the new skill as you head out onto the water.

Maui Snorkel Tours

This is a unique guided snorkeling tour. They offer shore-based tours , meaning no boats are involved at all. You’ll head out in a very small group with a guide (or a private tour) after a briefing on land about marine biology and how to snorkel.

Why is a shore-based excursion so great? On a tour boat, there’s no one available to give you 1:1 guidance for how to properly snorkel. With a guide, they are taking you step by step through how to snorkel, where to snorkel, and equipping you with the knowledge that you can use on future shore snorkeling trips.

Once you’ve mastered your snorkeling skills, you may feel comfortable enjoying some of the other best snorkeling spots on Maui .

Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. As one of only a few partially-submerged volcanic cones of its kind in the world, it offers sights and experiences that you probably didn’t even know you were missing.

We’ve been diving Molokini for 30 years and never grow tired of its clear blue water and incredible sea life. Come see why many consider Molokini the best snorkeling Maui has to offer.

Olowalu is one of the most amazing spots to explore marine life among all the Hawaiian Islands. Enjoy crystal-clear blue waters, a decorated coastline, impressive coral reef formations, and an abundance of Hawaiian ocean marine life.

Venture through calm waters with your family and friends, enjoying all the beauty of the Pacific. Be an eye witness to a myriad of tropical fish, colorful seabeds, the Hawaiian green sea turtle, and more. Olowalu is an adventure worth seeking; a perfect ocean activity from beginner to novice.

Turtle Town

Turtle Town is considered one of the best Maui diving locations, offering a rare glimpse into the world of the Hawaiian green sea turtle. These gentle creatures have been honored and loved by Hawaiians for centuries and you’ll be given the chance to share their home with them as you snorkel Turtle Town.

This is an opportunity that few people will ever have and will likely be one of your most memorable experiences in Maui. Snorkel with and closely observe the Hawaiian green sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is on the West Side of Maui and best reached by boat, explore one of the most unique and protected bays in Hawaii. Home to a host of tropical fish, Octopus, Eels, and the Hawaiian green sea turtles, Coral Gardens does not disappoint.

The natural reef formations are incredibly beautiful, vibrant in color, and bustling with ocean marine life. The clear and shallow waters reflect gorgeous Hawaiian sunlight, making for amazing visibility, and ideal conditions for snorkeling in Maui.

We originally booked with another company but were told by our local friends before we came to try this company as the groups aren’t as large. We were glad we did. Everything from booking to the actual experience was top notch. The only one that takes you outside to the other side of the crater to experience “the elevator” which was the highlight for me. • SpringTimeBird 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not Ideal (WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU) If you have ever snorkeled in an exotic location before with lots of marine life (Like Bali) don't expect much here. The coral reef is not in a healthy condition (over run by human activity?!) and there are not a lot of fish never mind other marine life. It was quite sad to witness There were black sea urchins however. They had life jackets but they didn't pass them out. Hmmm. Isn't that a law? The boat does not have seats. You sit on the edge of a zodiac and hold on tight. The best part was hearing humpback whales singing under water. Read more Written March 28, 2024

No regrets here - our guides were super friendly and informative, and we were lucky enough to see a bunch of whales - competing males for a female, a baby with their mom. Even listened to their songs via an underwater microphone. Red line is great! Read more Written March 28, 2024

  • 395anneu 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Company This is our third Redline boat trip and I can’t recommend this company more. Their guides are always terrific, warm, welcoming, and fun. The small boat size just makes for a better experience—if a bumpier ride! On this cruise, we snorkeled in four different places —there was just much more time in the water than a snorkel cruise we took on a bigger boat. It was a great morning. Learn about Molokini

Molokini Crater is a small islet off the southwest shores of Maui. It is a unique geological feature, and is home to abundant wildlife both above and below the water. With little sediment runoff into the ocean, the visibility at Molokini is a snorkeler’s dream! There are many different types of corals and algae, hundreds of species of fish, and let’s not forget the birds that can be seen soaring in the sky and nesting on the land. If you’re lucky you may spot an octopus or an eel, or get to swim with a manta ray or reef shark!

History: Around 230,000 years ago, the volcanic caldera that we call Molokini was formed. Back then the entirety of the caldera was exposed. However, since the melting of the ice caps from the most recent ice age some 20,000 years ago, sea levels have risen to a point where only the southern edge of the crater protrudes from the water; creating the crescent-shaped islet we see today. Geological and historical records tell us that Molokini was used by early settlers of Hawaii for fishing, hunting, and gathering. Not only was it used for sustenance, but Hawaiian mythology describes the islet’s formation and cultural significance with intricate legends and stories.

More recently, Molokini suffers from damages caused during the World War II era. Following the bombings of Pearl Harbor martial law was declared. Molokini and its neighboring island Kaho’olawe were used for target practice. Evidence of the bombings can still be seen today. From the 1950s to the early 1970s, black coral was harvested commercially as a precious commodity. Eventually, after years of public outcry and lobbying, Molokini and its surrounding 77 acres were established as a Marine Life Conservation District and Bird Sanctuary. Permanent moorings are installed to prevent anchors from dragging across coral beds, there are limited numbers of commercial vessels permitted to operate there, and it is illegal to fish, touch, feed, or take anything within the preserve. Molokini is a beautiful snorkel destination, and it is up to us to remember and honor its unique history while respecting the wildlife that call it home!

About Molokini Snorkeling Site

Defined as the ‘must-do’ adventure in Maui, Molokini crater provides world famous snorkeling and is home to more than 250 species of fish painted in every color of the rainbow, some of which can be found nowhere else on Earth. Formed from ancientMolokini volcanic eruptions it now serves as a State Marine Life and Bird Conservation Sanctuary, making Molokini a prime snorkeling destination. With crystal clear water visibility that can exceed 150 feet, Molokini allows snorkelers to witness an abundance of sea life and coral. Molokini is one of only three sheltered volcanic calderas in the world; its unique crescent shape provides a natural barrier against waves and currents inside the crater, providing excellent conditions for beginner to intermediate snorkelers.

A perfect end to your Molokini Snorkel adventure finishes with a swim over the Reefs End. The experience has been compared to “flying” as you swim over the crater’s edge to witness a massive drop from a few feet to more than 200 feet!

Time and weather conditions permitting Seafire Charters may voyage to the backside of Molokini. It is home to majestic underwater ledges and vertical walls dropping down to over 300 feet in depth with a visibility that can exceed 150 feet. Snorkelers of the back wall have witnessed sites of black coral, interesting rocks, and evocative ledges as well as manta rays, sharks, whales, schools of butterfly fish, squirrel fish and much more. The backside of Molokini is a more open ocean experience providing an advanced snorkel adventure.

South Maui Coast Line

Next, our adventure takes us along the pristine South Maui Coastline; providing an unparalleled view of Maui that only can only be experienced on the water looking back at the island. Beginning in Makena past Wailea and ending in Kihei, this is what makes boating such an unparalleled way to experience Hawaii.

Turtle Cleaning Station

Just when you thought you have seen it all, we go to our next destination, Turtle Cleaning Station. The great thing about this location is that it’s a consistent depth that allows for up-close encounters with turtles. Cleaning stations are spots in the reef area where certain types of fish eagerly nibble away at the parasites and algae that accumulates on the turtles. It is often common to the see the turtles swimming around or lying on the bottom with fish around them doing their cleaning work. Here you will have another opportunity to snorkel and on most occasions be able to swim with turtles as they come to the surface for air.

*Touching, chasing, riding or harassing the turtles is strictly prohibited.

Dolphins and seasonal whales.

molokini snorkel tours from kihei

The beauty of Seafire Charters Molokini Snorkel PLUS Adventure is that to get to Molokini from Kihei you pass right through the natural habitat of dolphins and whales! Dolphins are naturally playful and enjoy swimming and jumping along the wakes of our S.A.F.E. boats, and our captains are excellent at making the best of these special encounters with these beautiful, smart and fun water mammals.

Hawaiian waters are special, they provide the perfect conditions for migrating humpback whales looking for a warm place to calve, mate, and rear their young. From December to May the Maui coast becomes the “cradle of the humpback”. With the prime times being from the end of February and through April, it is during these four months that Seafire Charters often gets to see the beauty of these majestic creatures first hand.

Humpback whales are presently listed on the endangered species list; though they have been protected from whaling in U.S. waters sense 1966. Humpback whale’s lifespan range from 45–100 years old and have been known to reach 62 feet long, and weigh up to 4 tons.

Brandon and Jess gave us an EXTRAORDINARY experience which included seeing whales, many turtles and other types of exotic looking fish. We spotted the whales on the way to Molokini which is a sunken volcano. After snorkeling there and seeing many types of exotic fish, we travelled to Turtle Town and anchored on a spot called Coral Gardens. We saw many turtles large and small. Some were swimming within a few feet from us. Then we spotted even more whales on the way back!! Highly recommend this exquisite excursion!

Sadly this was my worst experience from all the ones booked so far. I would give them 2 stars but since Yuri went crazy on me through airbnb platform that they also sell their experience on, I'm revising my rating to 1 star. He took no accountability whatsoever. Instead accused me to work for competition. What a joke! He wrote me that he would refund me but since I already left a review he will not do it. That's level zero when it comes to professionally running a business. Weather was crappy / cold but that's no ones fault. The fact that due to weather we all needed wet suits (that cost extra and only cash is accepted) should be communicated upfront so people can prepare, and it wasn't. There was no sign where to meet them. Had to ask multiple people which group we supposed to join and even then we were not on their list despite this experience being paid upfront. The boat itself is small and uncomfortable. Which would be fine, if not expectations that we would be able to relax (they mention relaxing multiple times in their listing). The food options were horrendous. All unhealthy which is shocking as we are still in US. It's not like they can't buy healthy options. I was offered "a juice" that had 2% of actual juice in it! If these were only issues, I would get over it and just not write any review but 2 things really made me hugely disappointed. 1st issue - NO TURTLES they hype you up so much about turtles and keep saying that they're always there but they were no where to be found. We even went to two different locations and nothing. Our SOLE PURPOSE of this experience was to see turtles and that didn't happen. Honest business would offer refund. I believe they knew about it coz before we got there they mentioned so many times that "there are always turtles in this spot". There were other people on the boat that likely had similar situation on their previous trip a day before and they were offered to come back. We were not offered anything. And 2nd issue - we were introduced to "professional photographer" on the boat. To have professional camera and to be a professional / skilled photographer are two different things. The photos she took were horrendous. A 6 year old with a iphone could take better photos. I'm not trying to hurt anybody's feelings or ruin their business. I'm just speaking truth from a perfective of a client who was just hugely disappointed with this entire experience and how it was handled.

This excursion was AWESOME! I can't say enough about this experience. We found the whales. They were magical.

Captain Brandon and Ocean Biologist Jess were a wealth of knowledge about history and ocean life. Our group of 18 were able to quickly get in and out of water at Molokini and move on to the next snorkel spot, Turtle Town. Hawaiian juices, water and a sandwiches were offered. On our way over Brandon spotted humpback whales. We stopped and were able to watch the baby breach several times and slap fins on the surface. Overall, I'd recommend this group and use them again.

Captain was patient and made sure we saw whales as it was late in the season. We saw mothers and calves blows, backs and tails. Even some breaches off in the distance. Then more up close blows, backs and tails as we made our way back to the harbor. Staff was friendly and helpful. I did not snorkel but the rest of the guests appeared to have a great time. Water was very clear.

Turtles and fish were very cool, and the whales were an extra treat. Captain Brandon and Jess were very helpful, knowledgeable, and fun! Overall great trip would recommend.

Had a great time doing our Whale watching tour with Makena Coast Dive Charters. It was a 2 hour tour and it was just enough time to see a few whales. They made sure that we got to see them, and it was a beautiful site to see.

We've been out a few times this year, but this was our favorite whale watching trip! Even though it was a little windy, Captain Brandon found some great spots. We were close but not too close. Got a few shots of a whale's tail - I just wished they'd pose next time! We loved being on the Winona. The catamaran was comfortable and easy to move about. It was so much better than being on a big boat with lots of people - sometimes you're stuck and can't get a good viewing spot. Being on the Winona is the way to go! Great crew, awesome day. Looking forward to the next time!

The staff was fantastic!! Brandon had the best answers to any of our questions about the wild life, Hawaiian culture, and more! The captain and the boat were great, it is a beautiful trip, our favorite part of our Maui trip!

Out family had a great experience whale watching with a well informed and friendly crew. We were lucky to see mother and calf humpback wales breeching. Our 6 year old declared it was "the best day ever!" :-)
