Who are the best car transport companies?

The best car shipping companies offer transparent pricing, have reputations that can stand up to scrutiny, and bring years of experience to the table. While not every car transport company on this list has been in business for decades, newer companies like Sherpa are working hard to prove they can give veteran car shipping companies like AmeriFreight a run for their money. See how our top rated car transport companies compare.

What should you look for in a car shipping company?

There are lots of things that you should look for in a car shipping company:

  • Low prices. Avoid overpaying by taking the extra time to compare multiple quotes. Beware of pricing that seems too good to be true, though.
  • Guaranteed quotes. We’ve often seen car shipping prices go up about 25% between the initial estimate and the final price. So consider it a green flag if a company guarantees even a portion of your shipping quote.
  • Years of experience. Longevity is generally a huge trust signal in the auto transport industry. So we recommend looking for a car transport company that’s been around for a while.
  • Extra insurance. Accidents are rare—but in logistics, anything can happen. The best car shipping companies will offer you more than a bare-bones insurance policy. Keep in mind though, most policies will cover damage to the vehicle, and is not considered 'cargo insurance' for items shipped inside the car.
  • Customer reviews. We take customer reviews pretty seriously at Move.org, and though we understand reviews are subjective, we generally feel safe using a shipping service that has above-average customer reviews of at least 4.6 out of 5 stars when you're looking to ship a car.

Sherpa Auto Transport: Best overall car shipping company

This year, Sherpa Auto Transport takes our top spot as the best car shipping company. Low pricing aside, Sherpa Auto Transport now offers its customers a Price Lock Promise. That means it’ll cover any price increase up to $300—and in an industry where final prices are often 25% higher than the original quote, you could be saving yourself the headache of a last minute payment during your move by choosing Sherpa.

And as if that’s not enough, auto transport company is famous for its unmatched customer service and free car washes. It even puts each potential carrier through an exhaustive background check to ensure you get the best drivers. In sum, Sherpa Auto Transport is not afraid to innovate and challenge the status quo—which has, in turn, made them one of the best companies in the industry. No wonder they are our pick for the best car shipping company.

What sets Sherpa Auto Transport apart?

The price lock promise.

While Sherpa has an impressive online quote calculator, it’s the Price Lock Promise that really sells its customers. With the Price Lock Promise, customers can rest easy knowing that Sherpa Auto Transport will cover up to $300 in potential price increases. And if you’ve ever received a car shipping quote before, you know it’s not uncommon for your final price to be up to 25% higher than your initial quote. This is a big deal—especially because we don’t see any of Sherpa’s competitors offering something similar.

Excellent carrier vetting

Hiring the best drivers is one of Sherpa Auto Transport’s priorities. Between reviewing publicly available government and transportation records, and analyzing driver performance, this car shipping company makes sure to avoid cutting any corners. Plus, they actively maintain a “do not use” list of carriers who provide negative customer experiences. And Sherpa requires all of its carriers to add them as a policy holder on their insurance policies to make it easier for customers to file a claim if something happens to your vehicle in transit.

Customer service

Sherpa prides itself on delivering exceptional customer service during the shipping process . Customers consistently rave about the Price Lock Promise, professional customer service reps, and free car washes—offers that many other companies are now trying to emulate.

But what we really appreciate is that many of the company’s innovations come straight from the company’s owner, who understands that a positive customer experience is the most important part. And as a result, Sherpa has maintained an average customer review rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars for the last 2 years.

AmeriFreight: Flexible car transport quotes

There’s a lot to like about AmeriFreight. Customers give the car shipping company an average review rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. Plus, it's available in all 50 states. AmeriFreight even has military discounts. Oh yeah, and it offers some of the lowest pricing for larger vehicles of any company on this list.

AmeriFreight is another auto transporter that carefully vets all of its drivers and maintains a “do not use” list for low-quality drivers. But it offers a cherry on top that other companies don’t: a gap coverage plan that lets you take two days to look for damage and pays up to $2,000 toward your deductible if you need to file a claim.

Ultimately, the company has given customers a safe shipping experience for more than 17 years and it’s clear that’s a promise they’ll continue to deliver on for many more years to come.

What sets AmeriFreight apart?

Low prices (and lots of options).

AmeriFreight has three car shipping pricing options that help you fine-tune your shipment. The lone downside is that it can be confusing to know which one you need. Thankfully, we’re about to clear that up for you:

  • Economy Saver Rate. This is the best option if you’re determined to get the lowest price (even if it takes a month). AmeriFreight lets thousands of carriers bid on your shipment for several weeks. It starts with a super low rate and gradually increases the amount until an affordable driver comes along.
  • First Class Rate. This is the best option if you need your car shipped fast . AmeriFreight can guarantee your quote if you need the job done within 24 hours. Since car shipping costs notoriously rise upwards of 25% by the time your final bill arrives, this guaranteed option can save you hundreds of dollars on the average shipment. However, it’s also likely to be your most expensive option (rush jobs don’t come cheap).
  • Priority Preferred Rate. This is the best option if you don’t need to ship your car immediately but also can’t wait several weeks for the lowest possible price. It’s the way most car shipping companies estimate your costs. You give AmeriFreight the details of your shipment, and it lets the carriers bid against each other to drive down the price. When a few days have passed, AmeriFreight picks the lowest-priced shipping option.

Carrier vetting

AmeriFreight puts each of its carriers through a rigorous vetting process. The company’s five-pronged approach weeds out the bad drivers so you end up with a car carrier that will keep your car safe on the road:

  • License and registration. AmeriFreight does a background check on every carrier to ensure your drivers are appropriately licensed and registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • Interstate authority. Since many drivers can only transport cars within a single state, AmeriFreight verifies that carriers crossing state lines have the appropriate interstate authority.
  • Insurance. AmeriFreight won’t use a carrier unless it meets minimum liability insurance requirements. While the federal government requires carriers to have at least $750,000 in coverage, AmeriFreight says that most of its drivers are in the neighborhood of $1 million–$2 million.
  • Driver rating. AmeriFreight uses only those carriers with a rating of at least 95 percent on Central Dispatch.

“Do not use” list. A bad apple occasionally sneaks through even though AmeriFreight carefully vets its carriers. When that happens, AmeriFreight tosses it faster than you can say, “Annie ate eight Arctic apples.” The company keeps an internal “do not use” list for rotten carriers to make sure you work with only the best drivers.

Extra insurance

AmeriFreight has a gap insurance coverage plan that is next level. For $50–$100, you get up to $2,000 towards your insurance deductible (if the carrier’s insurance won’t pay)—and a 48-hour window to look for damage to your vehicle. Since most companies require you to document damage at the time of delivery or forever hold your peace, the two extra days afforded by the gap coverage is incredible.

For example, if you don’t find damage until the next day because your car gets delivered at night, you can still file a claim. The gap coverage can even be applied toward a rental vehicle if there’s a significant delay in your delivery timeline.

person-taking-photos-of-car

AmeriFreight’s gap coverage lets you take 48 hours to document any damage to your car. It’s a lifesaver if you can’t identify any problems because your car arrives at night or in bad weather.

SGT Auto Transport: Money back guarantee

car travel logistics

SGT Auto Transport is one of the most reliable car shippers on the market, so it’s no surprise that it has made it onto our list of best car shipping companies . As a company that’s been in business for almost a decade (and boasts over 30K happy customers), we’ve got a lot of reasons to like SGT. From offering extremely competitive prices, to providing fully customizable services and 24-hour customer service, SGT is a titan in its industry—and it’s here to stay.

What sets SGT Auto Transport apart?

Instant online quotes and guaranteed prices.

Online quoting tools are not necessarily a given in the auto transportation industry, so we find this to be a pretty incredible feature—especially because SGT stands by the pricing offered in those quotes. We’ve been able to confirm that the price you’ll receive (whether using the online tool or by phone) are guaranteed, and good for 7 calendar days.

Additionally, you can expect your quote to be all-inclusive … meaning you won’t have to be on the lookout for hidden fees. You can ask for discounts, including ones for the military. And the cherry on top? It price matches any direct competitor, as long as you can provide the written quote.

Extra safe transit

You know your vehicle is in safe hands with SGT, because it provides full-coverage insurance  at no additional cost  for each of its door-to-door shipments. Insurance is  not  a given in this industry, so the fact that SGT will guarantee coverage for any damage incurred during transit is a big deal. Keep in mind though, that this coverage does not apply to items  inside  the vehicle, so it’s best to remove any possessions that could be damaged during transit.

Personalized services and features

SGT Transport offers many services that their competitors shy away from, including guaranteed pickup dates and express shipping and delivery. Plus, its dedicated shipping advisors can help you customize your quote to match your needs, and your budget. SGT even allows their customers to ship up to 100 lb. of personal belongings in their vehicle.

World-class customer service

It’s not hard to get in touch with someone at SGT, and that’s completely by design. The company prides itself on delivering happy customers, and we’d bet this has a lot to do with its emphasis on customer service. Its experienced car shipping advisors are able to assist you 24/7, 365 days a year, so you know your shipment is being monitored closely at all times. And although it doesn’t offer GPS-tracking like some competitors, its 24/7 availability makes it easy to check in on your vehicle’s progress throughout the shipment process. It's even willing to provide free cancellation for missed pick-up dates. SGT is committed to providing a positive customer experience every time, and it's got the customer reviews to prove it.

Looking for a money-back guarantee?

Montway Auto Transport: Customer favorite

Montway Auto Transport has been on our top five list for some time, and it consistently proves that it belongs there. With Montway, you know you’ll be getting some of the lowest prices in the industry, and you won’t even have to worry about up-front payments. It’s the innovator of an online price calculator that many of its competitors now use, and they even offer something many cannot: guaranteed pick up dates . . . which means you don’t have to fret about last minute changes to your travel plans.

What sets Montway apart?

Guaranteed pickup dates.

A service that most other companies don’t offer, guaranteed pickup is something Montway offers to each one of its customers—at an extra price. That said, having control over your move timeline is an immense luxury in the car transport industry, as prices and pickup/delivery dates are often subject to change. But with Montway, you can feel confident that your vehicle will be picked up on the day of your choosing, so you can keep your travel itinerary intact.

GPS tracking

Although Montway cannot guarantee GPS tracking for every shipment (because the carrier must first agree to be tracked), it does its best to find compliant drivers for each customer. This effort is more than most companies are willing to exert, and as a result GPS tracking is not the easiest service in the industry to come by.

Online chat availability

Montway has one of the most user-friendly online chat experiences around, because instead of connecting you to a bot, you’re likely to reach a real person within 60 seconds. From there, knowledgeable customer service reps can help you get an auto shipping quote, respond to inquiries about existing quotes or orders, and answer any other questions you may have.

Looking for low prices from an industry legacy?

Ship A Car Direct: Damage free guarantee

Ship A Car Direct has quickly risen to the top of the industry. Aside from a comprehensive carrier vetting process (to make sure you’re always getting the best drivers), Ship A Car Direct now offers some of the lowest car shipping prices around. How low? Well, its pricing comes in around 11% lower than the industry average—which means around $130 in savings for the average customer. And pricing is even better for customers shipping with enclosed transport, which offers even more protection for your vehicle against damage in transit. Not to worry though, Ship A Car Direct also provides a damage-free guarantee worth up to $500. Not bad at all.

What sets Ship A Car Direct apart?

Well-vetted carriers.

Ship A Car Direct scrutinizes potential truck drivers to make sure your vehicle is in safe hands. The auto shipper operates with a “hire slow, fire fast” mentality, which means Ship A Car Direct takes its time hiring the best drivers and immediately cuts ties with those that produce negative experiences for its customers. With this method, you can rest easy knowing that the company works hard to protect you against disreputable drivers.

Damage-free guarantee

In the auto transport industry, it’s not uncommon for a company to offer zero additional insurance for their customers, putting most of the liability on the carriers. But that’s not the case with Ship A Car Direct. The broker is so confident in the quality of their drivers that it offers a damage-free guarantee of up to $500 towards your insurance deductible in the unlikely event your car experiences damage during transit.

Excellent customer reviews

Ship A Car Direct receives an average of 4.8 out of 5 stars for customer service across multiple platforms, and for good reason. Customers usually refer to fast and helpful customer service in their reviews, and many negative reviews are even followed up by responses from the company’s owner. Ship A Car Direct cares for their customers, and their customer reviews reflect that.

Impressed by the damage-free guarantee?

Easy Auto Ship: No upfront fees

Easy Auto Ship

Easy Auto Ship gives customers a free rental car if their vehicles don’t arrive within two weeks. The company fully guarantees its phone quotes (prices may change if you reserve online), kicks in an extra $100,000 insurance coverage, and gets excellent customer reviews. Easy Auto Ship doesn’t even charge you until it assigns a carrier.

On the downside, the website is a hot mess. A pop-up ad gets in your way no matter where you seem to go, and the “live chat” is really just a way to start an email dialogue. But those are small details, and Easy Auto Ship is clearly a company with big aspirations. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Easy Auto Ship climb the rankings in future years.

uShip: Online marketplace

3.5 out of 5 stars

uShip isn’t a transport broker as much as it is an online marketplace where you can find truck drivers. That makes it different from any other company on this list. uShip gives you control over your pricing and lets you see each carrier’s driving history. It also reimburses you up to $500 if there’s an accident and is available in all 50 states. While uShip’s prices aren’t guaranteed, the company’s rates are lower than they’ve ever been. It takes a minute to learn how to use uShip’s website to find auto shipping services, but it’s worth the effort more often than not.

Move.org calculates industry averages and identifies pricing trends by following a fourfold research approach:

  • Compare quotes. We collected nearly 700 quotes from 10 different companies. The car shipping quotes included prices for a motorcycle, car, SUV, and truck across 11 distances on both open and enclosed transport.
  • Mystery shopping. We contacted auto transport companies posing as customers to gather pricing data and learn how the brokers formulate their prices.
  • Site visits. We invited several industry leaders to visit our headquarters in Salt Lake City, UT, and explain what goes into their pricing. We then compared their answers to information we independently obtained to verify accuracy.
  • Annual calendar. We repeat this process every year and save our data so that we can compare trends over time.

  • Expedited : The fastest and priciest option from American Auto Shipping, Expedited service is for customers who need their cars picked up within 24 hours. This choice costs about $500 more than Standard shipping.

We reached out to American Auto Shipping for price estimates on shipping an operable 2018 Ford Explorer. Here are the quotes we received:

These rates are extremely competitive, even when compared to other top-ranked car shipping companies. Most motorists can expect to receive affordable prices when they partner with American Auto Shipping.

American Auto Shipping Reviews

American Auto Shipping has a strong reputation across the auto transport industry. The company holds an A+ rating on the BBB website and receives 4.7 out of 5.0 stars from customers. American Auto Shipping also carries a 4.6-star rating based on more than 800 Google reviews.

We give American Auto Shipping 4.6 out of 5.0 stars due to its variety of shipping options and reputation for excellent customer service.

While the other car moving companies on this list are shipping brokers that connect customers with independent carriers, uShip operates differently. Instead, it’s a marketplace that lets carriers bid on vehicle shipping requests. Since the uShip marketplace shows you multiple quotes at once, you won’t need to spend time researching services.

uShip Shipping Costs

When it comes to instant online quotes, uShip tends to be pricier than other top car shipping companies. However, if you allow carriers to bid on your service request, you may find lower shipping rates. Here’s what we got when we requested instant quotes for shipping a 2018 Ford Explorer:

Because uShip is a marketplace and not a transport broker, the company does not vet each carrier's insurance policies or customer reviews like the other car shipping companies on this list. Instead, that responsibility rests with customers.

uShip at a Glance

Founded : 2003

Headquarters : Austin, Texas

Services : Single-car, international, expedited, open, enclosed, terminal-to-terminal, door-to-door

uShip Reviews

Highly regarded online, uShip holds accreditation and an A+ rating from the BBB and 4.4 out of 5.0 stars from more than 11,000 customer reviews on Trustpilot. While there are some complaints about the company, most pertain to the independent carriers and not to uShip itself.

We award uShip 4.5 out of 5.0 stars based on the same factors as the auto shipping companies highlighted above.

Since cars rank as valuable possessions, it's important to pick quality auto transport providers when moving them across the country. Make sure to consider the following factors when you're considering car shipping companies:

  • Overall pricing : While it's tempting to immediately pick the cheapest option, think about whether you're choosing a quality car carrier before making your final decision. Our top seven car shipping companies all carefully balance competitive pricing with quality services.
  • Customer reviews : Consider each option's customer review score on Trustpilot and the BBB to find out whether people tend to be satisfied with their vehicle shipments.
  • Insurance offerings : It's critical for your car delivery to be covered by cargo insurance. Don't confirm an order without ensuring that your vehicle will be transported with insurance protection.
  • Guaranteed pricing options : Sometimes costs go beyond your initially quoted rate. The majority of auto transporters pass these increased rates over to customers, but Sherpa Auto Transport and Easy Auto Ship typically stick with their initial quotes.

While guaranteed pricing is simply a benefit of some car shipping companies, the other factors are crucial. There's no reason to consider an auto transporter with lackluster prices or dismal customer reviews, and it's an immediate red flag if your car shipper lacks insurance or adds on an extremely high deductible.

Some motorists wonder whether it's worthwhile to have a car shipped from one place to another. This is a completely valid question, especially for those who don't understand how the vehicle transport process actually works.

Our 2021 auto transport survey found that drivers tend to be satisfied with their use of auto transporters. The car shipping companies that score well among motorists include Montway Auto Transport, uShip, AmeriFreight, Easy Auto Ship, and Sherpa Auto Transport. Below are the findings of our customer satisfaction study:

7 best car shipping companies

While a few motorists weren't happy with their auto shipment, the clear majority had pleasant experiences. Car shipping companies exist to reduce hassle when relocating a vehicle, and it seems that the major players in the industry are making it a worthwhile investment.

According to our research, SGT Auto Transport , AmeriFreight , and Montway Auto Transport generally offer the industry's lowest rates. After receiving car shipping quotes online from the listed providers, we found the following average price estimates:

These numbers aren't exactly set in stone, as there are countless factors that affect the cheapest way to ship a car. It's best to compare free shipping quotes from multiple providers at once to determine which one most closely fits your cost and coverage needs.

How Much Does It Cost To Ship a Car?

Drivers typically pay between $1,000 and $2,000 to ship their vehicle using the best car shipping companies. Remember, though, that rates vary significantly based on your type of car, shipping distance, and time of year.

Below, you'll find cost data from our 2021 car shipping survey. We asked 1,000 drivers how much they paid to move their vehicle using auto transport, and here are our findings:

7 best car shipping companies

Your cost to move a vehicle may look somewhat different from the numbers above, which is why we'd recommend getting car shipping quotes online from multiple companies before picking an auto transport provider.

Car Shipping Cost Per Mile

If you're not sure what cost you'll find with car shipping rates, consider the numbers below. You'll get different prices depending on the scope of your move, but expect to pay around the following prices per mile:

  • $1.96 per mile for short moves (1-500 miles)
  • 93 cents per mile for mid-distance moves (500-1,500 miles)
  • 58 cents per mile for long moves (1,500+ miles)

Remember as well that not all providers offer every car transport service. If you're looking for terminal-to-terminal transport or car shipping to Hawaii or Alaska, your best auto shipping options may be quite different from those above. Be sure to compare quotes from various car shipping companies, as otherwise you'll likely end up paying too much.

Who Offers Guaranteed Pricing?

It's also worth mentioning that Sherpa Auto Transport and Easy Auto Ship offer guaranteed pricing. You'll find that actual car shipment costs commonly exceed how much companies charge upfront, but with these two options there's little need to worry about price increases before you sign the bill of lading.

How To Pay for Car Shipping

It's easy to get free car shipping quotes online for auto transport services. Once you pick a car shipping company and it finds a vehicle transporter, you'll either get charged a deposit or you can elect to pay for the entire shipment upfront. Those who decide to finish their payment post-delivery typically need to cover the rest of the cost in cash.

While car shipping companies may generally be more or less affordable than competitors, it’s important to know that transport pricing varies based on many factors. These include:

Transport Type

Vehicle shipping via enclosed auto transport is more expensive than using open transport. If you're moving a luxury vehicle or a classic car, using enclosed carrier transport will keep your vehicle safe from environmental factors or flying objects.

Pickup and Delivery Locations

Door-to-door delivery generally costs more than terminal-to-terminal dropoff. If you're willing to deal with the hassle of picking up your car at a shipping terminal, you may save considerable money.

Distance Shipped

Shipping a car over a long distance or cross-country, such as from California to either New York or Florida, costs more overall but less for each mile traveled. Expect lower prices but higher rates per mile for short-distance vehicle shipping services such as from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Some people believe that car shipping companies only cover long-distance moves, but that's not true. Our 2021 auto shipping survey found that large numbers of drivers turn to auto transport providers for distances of 500 miles or less. Consider our findings below:

7 best car shipping companies

Car shipping companies are an excellent way to transport vehicles, regardless of whether the car needs to move across the state or all the way to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or an international destination.

Type of Vehicle

Your car’s length, height, clearance, and weight can all influence shipping prices from auto transport companies. Vehicles that are inoperable also cost considerably more to ship. Moving larger cars will nearly always be more expensive than transporting smaller models.

Time of Year

Rates tend to spike in January and during the summer, when auto shippers receive their highest demand. Expect to get lower rates if you can avoid these two busy periods.

Delivery Times

If you're considering a flexible time frame for when your car shipment arrives, you may save money. Certain days receive higher demand than others, so a low-demand day will keep prices to a minimum.

It's not always clear whether one of the top car shipping companies is your best option, or if you may be better off driving it or buying a vehicle in your new location. Below, we'll outline some situations when you may want to reach out to an auto transport provider.

  • You love your car : If you plan on keeping your car for the long-term, getting rid of it isn't really an option. The best auto transport companies can move it safely and efficiently to your new destination.
  • Valuable vehicle : If you've got a standout car, you probably aren't ready to sell it. While you could drive it to your new location, there's a higher potential for damages, mechanical breakdowns, and wear and tear that could be avoided through car shipping.
  • Looking for less hassle : Searching for a new car isn't particularly fun, and it's expensive too. Many drivers find that it's simpler to let an auto transport provider carry their car rather than buying a new one or driving it across the nation.
  • Your car can't move : If you've got an inoperable vehicle that you want to keep, there's no real possibility of driving it across the country. Be sure to consider car shippers that transport inoperable cars.

While some people may prefer to personally drive their vehicle, it often adds stress and expenses to a move. Selecting one of the best car shipping companies can create peace of mind for those headed over great distances.

If you're looking for car shipping to Hawaii or Alaska, be aware that not all auto transporters offer services outside of the contiguous 48 states. Make sure to consider the following car shipping companies if you're headed to the Aloha State or the Last Frontier:

  • Montway Auto Transport
  • AmeriFreight
  • Easy Auto Ship
  • American Auto Shipping
  • Price : Comparing providers can be difficult due to the many factors that influence cost. To determine this score, we employ a secret shopper analysis using different vehicles, distances, and routes.
  • Services : A wide variety of services is essential to support the differing needs of customers. We take into account the types of services available, insurance coverage, and the ability to guarantee pickup and drop-off dates. We also consider whether a car transport company is a broker or a provider.
  • Customer Service : The level of customer service and care provided by a shipping company is an important consideration. Our review team sifts through customer reviews and complaints from reputable sources such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot. We also consider the responsiveness of each company’s customer service team based on our secret shopper analysis.
  • Reputation : Good auto shipping providers consistently provide quality experiences. Our team takes into account BBB ratings and the company’s history of reliable service when giving this score.

What is the best vehicle transport company?

The best car shipping companies are Montway Auto Transport, Sherpa Auto Transport, AmeriFreight, Easy Auto Ship, SGT Auto Transport, American Auto Shipping, and uShip. We judged these companies on factors such as car shipping costs, services, customer ratings, and industry reputation.

What is the cheapest company to ship your car?

SGT Auto Transport, AmeriFreight, and Montway Auto Transport are typically the cheapest car shipping providers at between $1,100 and $1,300 per shipment. However, your quote may differ depending on where you live, your vehicle, and your shipping needs. It's always a good idea to compare quotes from providers before making a final decision.

What is the difference between a transport broker and a carrier?

A carrier is the company or individual that moves your vehicle, while an auto transport broker connects customers with carriers and manages the relationship between them.

Does AAA offer car shipping?

A company called AAA Discount Auto & Truck Transporters does offer both enclosed and open shipping options around the US. The car movers from this company are not affiliated with the AAA known for roadside assistance.

How much does shipping cost for a car?

Our research shows that the average cost of shipping a vehicle is between $1,000 and $2,000. However, the cost of shipping a vehicle varies greatly depending on many factors. The vehicle type, travel distance, time of year, and type of shipping you need all affect the cost.

How do I get a car shipping estimate?

To get a car shipping quote, you can reach out to a vehicle transport company. You’ll need to provide a few details about your car along with where and how you want to ship it. After the car shipping company receives this information, it will get back to you with an estimate and offer to connect you with a carrier.

Are there discounts for auto transport?

Yes, many car shipping companies offer discounts. We found that of all the providers we researched, AmeriFreight offers the most savings—with discounts for active-duty military members, senior citizens, students, and others. Some car shipping companies offer discounts for booking early or shipping multiple vehicles at once.

Can I put stuff in my car when I ship it?

You can typically put up to 100 pounds of personal items in your car when you ship it. Motorists are rarely allowed to add more than that, though, as it will reduce truck drivers' fuel economy.

I understand that they have not shipped my car directly they might have used logistic company to ship my vehicle but going directly with the logistics as they are mushroom company with no much information over the internet and in real so its always good option to book a car shipping company like Rapid auto Shipping .

How much do car transport companies charge?

Car shipping quotes are based on current market trends for nationwide auto transport. Your total cost from auto shipping companies will depend on the type of car you want to move, where it needs to go, its size, condition (or if it has any modifications), total transport distance, transport type (open or enclosed trailer shipment), and finally, the time of year when you book.

Don’t forget to check for additional promotions and savings. Get a quote with our car shipping calculator, use our  Live Chat , or call  (888) 666-8929 .

Size and weight of vehicle

Longer, taller or heavier-than-average vehicles require special accommodations by car transport companies and, as a result, the price may vary.

The car condition

Shipping inoperable vehicles costs more because it requires extra tools and labor for car shipping companies to accommodate the cargo. But if your car rolls, steers, and brakes, we can ship it.

The transport type

Your price can vary depending on the trailer type. Open transport is the standard and more affordable option, while enclosed transport requires specific handling.

The shipping distance

Longer runs have a higher overall price but lower cost per mile. The further your vehicle travels, the more you save on an auto transporter.

Interstate Car Shipping Services | Interstate Auto Transport | Instant Car Shipping Quotes | Best Interstate Auto Transport Company

Interstate auto transport refers to the transportation of vehicles across state lines. It is a convenient and efficient way to move vehicles long distances, especially for individuals relocating or purchasing cars from another state. Specialized auto transport carriers are used to safely transport vehicles, ensuring they arrive in good condition. The cost of interstate auto transport can vary depending on factors such as distance, vehicle type, and transport options chosen. It is important to research and choose a reputable auto transport company to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Interstate Auto Transport - Moving your car from one state to another is a pretty broad category of car shipping because it can mean anything from delivering a car a couple of hundred miles or less up to 2,000 miles or more. Interstate car transport can mean moving a car from New York to Pennsylvania or it can mean shipping a car from California to Vermont; two very different jobs! Whether near or far, you need the best car shipping company that you can get to help with your shipment.

1. Understanding Delay Factors in Car Shipping

When dealing with delays in car shipping, it's essential to understand the various factors that can contribute to extended delivery times. One common factor is the route and schedule of the car carriers. Car transport companies plan shipments based on optimized routes to accommodate multiple clients along the way. Delays can occur due to unexpected situations such as weather conditions, road closures, or unforeseen circumstances affecting the planned route.

While most car transport services provide an estimated delivery window, it's important to consider that unforeseen delays may occur. Factors like the availability of drivers and the demand for car carriers in specific areas can also influence delivery timelines. Clients should be aware that while delays are not uncommon, reputable car transport companies strive to communicate effectively and provide updates on any changes to the original schedule.

2. Effective Communication to Mitigate Delays

Communication is a key aspect of mitigating delays and fostering a positive experience with car shipping services. Reputable companies prioritize keeping clients informed about the status of their shipments. This involves regular updates on the progress of the car carriers, potential delays, and estimated arrival times. Clients should ensure that they provide accurate contact information and stay accessible via phone or email to receive timely notifications.

In the case of unexpected delays, the car transport company's ability to communicate transparently and promptly becomes crucial. Clients should feel confident reaching out to the company's customer service team for updates and clarification on any changes to the original delivery schedule. Maintaining open lines of communication helps manage expectations and ensures a smoother resolution to any challenges that may arise during the car shipping process.

3. Addressing Damage Concerns in Car Shipping

Dealing with damage concerns during car shipping is a critical aspect of the process. Clients entrust their vehicles to car transport services with the expectation that every effort will be made to ensure safe and damage-free delivery. While reputable companies take extensive measures to protect vehicles, occasional incidents may occur. In such cases, clients should follow a systematic approach to address damage concerns.

The first step is to thoroughly inspect the vehicle upon delivery. Document any visible damages and discrepancies in the vehicle's condition compared to the pre-shipping inspection. Take photographs and gather evidence to support your claim. Promptly report the damage to the car transport company, providing a detailed account of the issues encountered. Reputable companies have procedures in place to handle such situations and may request documentation to process a damage claim.

4. Navigating Car Shipping Fees and Additional Charges

Understanding the fee structure associated with car shipping services is crucial to avoid unexpected costs. Car transport companies typically provide a quote based on various factors, including the distance, vehicle type, and chosen transport options. However, clients should be aware of the potential for additional fees, such as expedited delivery charges, storage fees, or fees related to changes in the shipment details.

Clients can navigate potential fees by carefully reviewing the terms and conditions outlined in the car transport company's quote and agreement on their blog. Additionally, inquire about any potential fees that may apply to your specific situation and clarify the conditions under which they may be incurred. A transparent and upfront discussion about fees ensures that clients have a comprehensive understanding of the financial aspects of their car shipping service.

5. Ensuring Quality Service from Car Transport Companies

Quality service from car transport companies is a priority for clients entrusting their vehicles for relocation. Clients should research and select reputable car transport services with a proven track record of customer satisfaction. Reading reviews and testimonials can provide insights into the experiences of previous clients, offering a glimpse into the company's ability to deliver on its promises.

A reliable car transport company values client satisfaction and strives to provide a seamless and stress-free experience. Their team, from drivers to customer service representatives, plays a crucial role in ensuring that everything, from the quote form to the final delivery, aligns with the client's expectations. By choosing a reputable company with a customer-centric approach, clients can enhance their overall experience and minimize potential issues.

6. Taking an Active Role in the Car Shipping Process

Clients can play an active role in ensuring a smooth car shipping process by staying informed and engaged throughout. This involves actively participating in the initial stages, such as filling out the quote form accurately and providing all necessary details about the vehicle and shipment. Being proactive about communication and remaining accessible ensures that clients receive timely updates and notifications.

Clients can also contribute to the care of their vehicles by adequately preparing them for transport. Remove personal belongings, secure loose items, and document the vehicle's condition before it is taking away by driver for shipping. Taking these proactive steps helps create a collaborative and transparent relationship between the client and the car transport company, contributing to a more successful and satisfactory car shipping experience.

Dealing with delays, a bit of damage, fees, and other aspects of car shipping requires a collaborative effort between clients and car transport companies. By understanding the various factors at play and actively participating in the process, clients can navigate potential challenges and ensure a positive outcome for their vehicle relocation.

Interstate Car Shipping Companies Near Me: Your Trusted Choice for Interstate Car Transport

There are a lot of options available for interstate car moving and some are definitely better than others. For one, most companies that ship cars between states usually specialize in just one or a couple routes.

A company may primarily ship autos from Connecticut to Florida, for example, and take periodic work along the East Coast as it fits with their shipping schedule. The best car shipping service providers routinely ship to all regions in the U.S. and tend to be larger and more established nationwide shipping companies in the industry. These are the ones you should target if you need a vehicle shipped across the country, or from coast to coast.

When picking a car transport company that ship cars from one state to another, you should either find one that specializes in the states you need service or a company that works throughout the United States like A-1 Auto Transport . Unlike some other professional American auto shipping companies, we have operating authority in all 50 states, which means we can handle American interstate auto shipping requests to and from anywhere in America.

There are two easy ways to determine if a Montway car shipping company has operating authority in the states in which you need shipping services. The first, and most reliable, is to look up a company on the FMCSA website, the regulator for the car shipping industry, to see the status of their operating authority. The other, which may be quicker but official, is to use Google Maps to see if they have field offices in the cities and states in which you'll need service.

Auto Transport Companies Near Me

Convenient Auto Transport:

There's no denying that it can be a pain to drive a car halfway across the country just so you can have access to it in another state. With A-1's nationwide auto shipping program , your car will be delivered directly to the location number you specify at the time you need. We even have auto storage available in all 50 states so there's no problem if your car arrives ahead of you.

Affordable Car Shipping:

Many first-time car movers are surprised to find out that it can be easy and cheaper to hire a professional to ship a car than to move it yourself, especially when crossing state lines. Going from one state to another usually means a trip of a few hundred to a couple thousand miles and that adds up in gas, wear on your vehicle, as well as food and lodging costs if the trip takes several days.

If you calculate the costs of driving or towing your car on your own and compare it to our regional shipping prices, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that the price difference is negligible, if not cheaper, when hiring us to do the job for you.

1. Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

When preparing your vehicle for transport, selecting a reputable auto transport company is a critical first step. Look for expertise and experience in the industry, as well as a solid reputation backed by positive reviews. A reliable company should have a proven track record of safely transporting vehicles, especially considering factors like road conditions, weather variations, and overall reliability. Check if the company is well-connected in terms of its network, as a broad network enhances its commitment to efficient and timely vehicle transport.

Additionally, verify the company's cargo insurance policies. A reputable auto transport service will offer insurance coverage for your vehicle during transit. Understanding the level of protection provided is crucial, and you should inquire about the coverage options available. Ensure that you receive a clear explanation of the insurance policy, including any deductibles and limitations.

2. Estimating Car Shipping Costs and Discounts

Understanding the costs associated with shipping your vehicle is essential for making an informed decision. Most auto transport companies provide estimates based on factors such as the vehicle size, distance, and chosen shipping method. Be sure to get quotes from multiple companies to compare average costs and identify any potential discounts.

Some companies offer discounts for various reasons, such as military personnel or multiple vehicles shipped together. Inquire about available discounts and promotions to maximize potential savings. Keep in mind that some companies may require a deposit to secure your booking, but be cautious about making cash payments and ensure that the payment process aligns with industry standards.

3. Preparing Your Vehicle for Transport

Once you've selected an auto transport company, take steps to prepare your vehicle for the journey. Clean your car thoroughly to document its current condition, noting any existing damages. Remove personal items from the car to ensure safety during transit and comply with regulations. Check the vehicle's fuel level, and if using an open trailer, secure or remove loose parts to prevent damage.

Weather conditions can impact the transportation process, so consider the season and climate of the locations involved. Communicate with the transport company about any specific requirements or considerations based on the weather during the planned shipping period. Adequate preparation ensures that your vehicle is ready for a smooth and protected journey.

4. Choosing the Right Transport Method

Auto transport companies typically offer two primary methods: open transport and enclosed transport. Open transport exposes your vehicle to the elements but is a more cost-effective option. Enclosed transport provides an extra layer of protection but comes at a higher price. Consider the level of protection your vehicle needs based on factors like the vehicle's value and your budget.

When making this decision, factor in the benefits and potential risks associated with each transport method. Evaluate the space available, the protection offered, and the overall suitability for your specific vehicle and relocation requirements.

5. Tracking Your Vehicle's Journey

A reliable auto transport company should provide a tracking system that allows you to monitor your vehicle's journey in real-time. This feature adds an extra layer of peace of mind, knowing that you can stay informed about the progress of your vehicle during transit. Confirm with the company about the availability and functionality of their tracking system, and inquire about any additional fees or requirements associated with this service.

Tracking ensures transparency and helps you stay connected with the transportation process. It provides a sense of control and allows you to plan for the arrival of your vehicle at its destination.

6. Finalizing the Process and Ensuring Protection

Before your vehicle is loaded onto the carrier, conduct a final inspection with the transport company. Ensure that you have a detailed list of your vehicle's condition and that the transporter acknowledges this list. Address any concerns or questions you may have at this stage to avoid potential disputes later.

Additionally, inquire about the company's commitment to protecting your vehicle during the entire relocation process. Confirm their expertise in securing vehicles for transport, especially considering factors like road conditions, vehicle size, and weather variations. Understanding the protection measures in place will contribute to a smoother and more secure transport experience.

Preparing your vehicle for transport involves a combination of thorough research, careful planning, and effective communication with the chosen auto transport company. By following these steps, you can ensure that your vehicle is well-prepared and protected throughout its journey to the new destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the size of my vehicle make a difference in how i ship it state to state.

No, the size of your vehicle won’t make a difference.  Open car carriers are used to cross the country for long and short routes.  They all carry most vehicles – sedans, Pick Ups, SUVs, and vans.

However, if you have any particular equipment added on the exterior of your vehicle that makes it a difficult fit for the carrier, it cost you more to ship.

Can I leave personal items in my car?

Some companies will allow belongings in the trunk up to a certain weight. However, the US Department of Transportation prohibits the carrying of personal items on a truck licensed for carrying automobiles.  A company can be fined up to $10,000 for violating the DOT law.

It’s best that you find another way to transport all your belongings and not rely on your vehicle to do it.

What is the difference between using an open or closed carrier for interstate transport?

Open carrier – This mode of transport will not protect your vehicle from elements, i.e., weather, road grime, bugs, rocks, etc. However, more vehicles can fit on an open car carrier, so it lowers your transportation cost.

Closed carrier – This mode of transportation protects your vehicle from the elements.  The closed carrier carries fewer cars so the cost of the transport will be more for you.

Speak with your transport company or broker to find out which model is best for you.

How will my vehicle be picked up and delivered?

Most vehicle transport companies will do all they can to pick up and deliver your vehicle where you want.  However, due to the size of transport carriers, residential streets sometimes don’t work due to maneuverability constraints.

If this is the case, most will ask you to meet them somewhere more carrier friendly such as a large parking lot.

Must I be present when my car is picked up or delivered?

Vehicle transport carriers will request that you, or someone you designate, be present at both pickup and delivery.

An inspection will be done at pickup and again at delivery noting all knicks, dings, and dents.  The same review conducted on both ends enables the driver and you to notice any damage that may have occurred at the time of delivery.

How do I prepare my vehicle for transport?

Here is a list of what you can do to prepare your car for interstate transport:

  • Make sure it is spotless, inside and out.  Attention to cleaning your vehicle helps with detecting any knicks, dings, or dents.
  • Make sure there are no personal items left in the vehicle
  • Make sure there is a ¼ tank of gas in the car

How do I track my vehicle while in transit?

There are a few ways available to track your vehicle depending on the company you use:

  • Many have online tracking to go to their website, enter your tracking number, and their system will update you.
  • Some will give you an update without you asking for it
  • Others will update you only if you ask
  • If independently owned and operated, some shipping companies with a driver who does all the work himself may even give you his cell number so you can speak with him directly.

Why would I use car transport instead of driving the car myself?

If you need to move out of state and bring your car with you, there are some factors to consider when deciding whether to ship it or drive it yourself.  These factors are:

  • How far is your destination?
  • How many extra miles be on your vehicle?
  • Will you have to pay interstate tolls?
  • Will you have to spend nights in a hotel after driving all day?
  • Will you have to miss work?
  • How much will gas cost?

When choosing whether to hire an interstate auto transport company or drive your car yourself, consider the above.  If you know your vehicle will be secure in transit and be delivered to its destination when you need it, maybe using a transport company is an excellent idea. You be the judge.

How long does it take to transport a car from state to state?

Usually, a transportation company will give a time frame for delivery with the initial quote.  However, it’s important to remember that moving a car from state to state can have delays caused by natural disasters, seasonal weather, and road incidents.

Can I transport an inoperative vehicle?

Yes, you can, but not all companies are authorized to transport vehicles between states, and those that are, not all are willing to ship a nonworking car.

Find a company with experience in transporting inoperative vehicles.  Their expertise will make a difference in the safety and security of your car while also meeting all regulatory requirements.

Keep in mind that transporting your inoperative vehicle may cost more.  An experienced company or broker will be able to help you understand the costs.

How does insurance work for interstate car transport?

Most transport companies include basic liability coverage during transport.  There are comprehensive insurance options available through your insurance broker or the carrier if you want or think you need more.

Be sure to speak with your transport carrier or broker if you have any questions about insurance.

What does interstate transport of my car cost?

A transport company will give you an estimated cost for shipping your car. The estimate is a guideline of what the customer will pay for the distance covered.

Keep in mind that the upfront estimate is just that, an estimate. Costs displayed upfront, before the exact information you can give them, can be adjusted to fit your needs without compromising on the safety and security of your vehicle.

What factors affect the cost of interstate car shipping services?

The cost of interstate car shipping services can vary depending on several factors. Some of the main factors that can affect the cost include: 1. Distance: The distance between the pickup and delivery locations significantly determines the cost. Longer distances usually result in higher shipping costs. 2. Vehicle size and weight: The size and weight of your vehicle can also impact the cost. Larger and heavier vehicles may require specialized equipment or carriers, which can increase the price. 3. Vehicle condition: Your vehicle's condition can also affect the cost. Inoperable vehicles or those requiring special handling may incur additional fees. 4. Transport type: The transport you choose, such as open or enclosed carriers, can also affect the cost. Enclosed carriers provide more protection but tend to be more expensive. 5. Season and demand: The time of year and current demand for car shipping services can impact costs. Prices may be higher during peak seasons or when demand is high. 6. Additional services: If you require extra services such as expedited shipping, door-to-door delivery, or enclosed transport, these can also add to the overall cost. It's important to remember these factors when requesting a quote for interstate car shipping services to ensure an accurate estimate.

How do I choose the right auto transport company for my vehicle shipping needs?

Choosing the right auto transport company for your vehicle shipping needs is important. Here are some factors to consider when making your choice: 1. Reputation and experience: Look for an auto transport company with a good reputation and years of experience in the industry. Read reviews and testimonials from previous customers to get an idea of their track record. 2. Licensing and insurance: Ensure the auto transport company is properly licensed and insured. This will protect you and your vehicle in case of any accidents or damages during transportation. 3. Services offered: Consider the specific services the auto transport company offers. Do they provide door-to-door delivery? Can they transport your vehicle type (e.g., cars, motorcycles, boats)? Make sure they can meet your specific needs. 4. Pricing: Compare prices from different auto transport companies, but be cautious of extremely low prices. While affordability is important, extremely low prices may be a red flag for poor service or hidden fees. 5. Customer service: Pay attention to the level of customer service the auto transport company provides. Are they responsive to your inquiries? Do they provide clear and detailed information? Choose a company that values customer satisfaction. 6. Insurance coverage: Inquire about the insurance coverage provided by the auto transport company. Ensure it is sufficient to cover any potential vehicle damage during transportation. 7. Delivery timeframe: Ask about the estimated delivery timeframe for your vehicle. While delays can sometimes occur, it's important to know when your vehicle will be delivered. By considering these factors and researching, you can choose the right auto transport company that meets your vehicle shipping needs.

Auto Transport Fundamentals | Factors Affecting Vehicle Shipping Costs

Diverse range of vehicles in a shipping yard, illustrating factors affecting shipping costs.

Hi there! Let me explain something important to you. If you’re planning on moving your set of wheels from Point A to Point B, it’s vital to understand what potentially cranks up the price of vehicle shipping. You’d undoubtedly want to steer clear of any unwanted surprises, wouldn’t you? 👌

Shipping Cost Factors

When it comes to the nitty-gritty of vehicle shipping costs , several inherent factors play a pivotal role in determining how much coin you’re going to drop:

  • The Size and Weight of Your Vehicle : Bigger cars—like pickup trucks or SUVs—will naturally require more resources to transport. Therefore, they tend to draw a steeper shipping price than smaller cars, such as sedans or compacts. Just think, a bigger car takes up more space on the carrier and brings a heavier load to move. 🚚
  • Transport Type : The method of vehicle transportation chosen forms an integral part of the overall cost. There are typically two types of services: open carriers, which are cost-effective but offer less protection, and enclosed carriers, which provide a higher level of protection from the elements but come with a higher price tag. ⛴️🏍️

Pickup, Distance, etc | Car Shipping Essentials

  • Pickup and Delivery Locations : Here’s the deal—transporting a vehicle between major cities generally costs less than shipping to a remote or rural location. This is because carriers frequently travel between big cities, making it a less costly operation due to economies of scale. So, if you live in a more secluded area, you might see the price yo-yo up! 🌇🏞️
  • Distance of Ship : No surprises here—the further your vehicle needs to travel, the more fuel it’s going to burn, not to mention increased driver labor. Consequently, the total shipping costs will understandably rise. Plan your route wisely! 🌐🛣️
  • Seasonality : Interestingly, the time of the year can also impact shipping costs. For instance, peak moving season (typically spring and summer) can see costs surge. Plus, harsh winter conditions might also push prices up, due to the increased risks. 📆❄️

In the world of vehicle shipping, understanding these cost factors can go a long way towards squeaky clean budgeting. And, who knows, you might just save a pretty penny!

Moving to Oregon | Is This the Right Move for You?

Reading Time: 6 minutes Moving to Oregon | Is This the Right Move for You? Oregon scored three of the top 50 places to live in the 2018 Top 100 Places to Live, and in 2017, the state had the second-highest percentage of inbound moves on the 2017 National Movers Survey. But what makes moving to Oregon such a good idea?  Is it the vast options for outdoor recreation, the rugged coastline or the scenic mountains? Is it the micro-breweries or the coffee roasters? It’s probably a combination of all these factors, combined with the mild marine climate and the burgeoning technology industry, and the leading college towns. Let’s look a little deeper into the factors that make Oregon such a great state.

  • Best Car Shipping Companies

Key Takeaways

  • Montway Auto Transport is our overall pick due to its nationwide and international availability, decent pricing, and high ratings on the Better Business Bureau website.
  • The cost of shipping your car depends on the distance, type of transport (open or enclosed), vehicle type, and time of year.
  • Shipping your car protects it from wear and tear and excessive mileage, and with enclosed transport, it's safe from the elements or debris encountered on the road.

It's one thing to move your belongings in moving boxes, but it's another thing entirely to move your car – without driving it yourself, that is. That's the role of a car shipping company or an auto shipper. Throughout the entire car shipping process, there is a significant amount of service customization, including choosing the speed of shipping, the type of shipping (i.e., enclosed transport or open transport), and even the method of pickup and drop-off.

Though auto shipping typically entails picking up your vehicle at one address and delivering to another, there are also terminals where you can drop off and pick up vehicles to save money. Car shipping companies can usually pick up and deliver a variety of vehicles, including classic cars and motorcycles, in at least 48 states and sometimes even overseas.

Read on for our top picks for the best car shipping companies for various needs, including distance, budget, and the type of vehicle you're moving.

  • How We Chose

Montway Auto Transport  »

Montway Auto Transport

Available in all 50 states

Founded in 2006 and has shipped more than 1 million vehicles

Offers international shipping

Offers expedited shipping

Has varying service quality depending on shipping partner used

Charges $249 cancellation fee for shipments already assigned

Does not ship RVs, campers, and trailers

Montway is actually an auto transport broker rather than a true auto shipper. This means that Montway doesn't ship your car but instead connects you to a company that does. At a glance, this might appear to be a drawback, but it has allowed Montway to create its own network of more than 15,000 shippers that can do practically anything you need them to do. The company services all 50 states and ships internationally.

Despite acting as a middleman, Montway offers reasonable prices as low as $1.85 per mile for shipments less than 500 miles, as low as 91 cents per mile for shipments between 500 and 1,500 miles, and as low as 59 cents per mile for shipments greater than 1,500 miles. It also earns 4.6 stars out of 5 from almost 2,300 reviews on the Better Business Bureau website.

One downside to Montway is that the company doesn't provide online tracking for shipments – you'll have to contact your trucker for updates. It also has a $249 cancellation fee if your plans change after your shipment has been assigned.

In the end, though, Montway can ship practically any type of car to nearly any destination, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg to do it, which is why we've selected it as our best overall car shipping company.

AmeriFreight  »

AmeriFreight

Provides a wide range of discounts

Ships to all 50 states

Established in 2004

Has varying service quality depending on shipper used

Does not offer international shipping

Like Montway, AmeriFreight is a car shipping broker that will connect you to a shipper. But unlike Montway, AmeriFreight offers discounts, including occupational discounts (such as active-duty military, medical personnel, and first responders) and discounts for return customers, multiple vehicles, and even for seniors and students. That said, these savings tend to be in the range of $25 to $50, which is certainly welcome but perhaps not the kind of big savings some potential customers are looking for, considering auto shipping is generally an expensive service.

As with all brokers, there is some risk that service experience will vary depending on the actual shipper that's used, but an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau may help put your mind at ease. AmeriFreight can connect you with carriers that can transport all kinds of vehicles, from motorcycles to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to boats on rolling trailers.

Sherpa Auto Transport  »

Guarantees quoted rate

Charges only a $50 cancellation fee

Pays for car wash after delivery

Does not ship to or from Alaska or Washington, D.C.

Does not ship internationally

Will not ship RVs, ATVs, or boats

Many companies offer cross-country shipments, but we like Sherpa best for two simple reasons. First, all shipments are door-to-door, meaning you won't have to drop off or pick up your vehicle at a transfer hub. Second, the company's Price Lock Promise ensures you'll never pay a rate higher than your price quote. This is especially reassuring considering many companies end up charging more than the quoted price.

Sherpa’s Clean Car Guarantee means the company will reimburse you up to $20 for a car wash, making open transport a bit more appealing. We also appreciate that if you cancel your shipment prior to a carrier being assigned, there is only a $50 cancellation penalty.

There is one major drawback with Sherpa, though: It only services the contiguous U.S. and Hawaii, meaning that residents of Alaska will have to look elsewhere for an auto shipper. Washington, D.C. is also not serviced, so vehicles must be picked up outside of the city limits. It's also worth noting that Sherpa deals primarily with traditional vehicles like cars and trucks. It does not ship motorcycles and ATVs.

Easy Auto Ship  »

Easy Auto Ship

Provides periodic tracking updates

Discounts service up to $150 for cash payments

Pays for a rental car if delivery is at least 10 days late

Includes 25% surcharge for enclosed containers

Charges extra for guaranteed delivery dates and times

Easy Auto Ship stands out from its competitors for two key reasons: It provides periodic tracking updates and it will pay for a rental car if your vehicle is 10 or more days late. We consider these important features for international shipping, which can sometimes be subject to complicated scheduling issues and delays due to the red tape involved with shipping across borders. It's also a plus that Easy Auto Ship services all 50 states, so you don't need to worry about your vehicle's origin point.

The company also offers a unique discount for cash payers: up to $150 off your total cost. Don't expect a bevy of discounts beyond that, as there are no additional savings offered for seniors, students, or returning customers. There are, however, discounts for members of the military and for bulk shipping.

It's also worth keeping in mind that when shipping internationally, an enclosed container is probably a good idea, but Easy Auto Ship has a 25% surcharge for this service, which will significantly increase the total price of your shipment.

Nexus Auto Transport  »

Nexus Auto Transport

Offers discounts for active and retired military members

Features online shipment tracking

Services all 50 states

Has a B Better Business Bureau rating

Nexus not only emphasizes on its website its willingness and ability to aid in military relocations, but it also provides discounts to both active and retired members of the military. Most shipping companies provide some savings for active military, but they typically exclude retired service members.

For quick and important moves often required of military personnel, it's helpful to have both expedited shipping and online tracking so that you can be sure your vehicle gets to where it needs to be on time, and Nexus offers both services. Plus, Nexus operates in all 50 states, meaning you can get wherever you need to go within the U.S.

For all of these reasons, Nexus is a great choice for military relocations. However, Nexus doesn’t offer international shipping, so active military members heading overseas will need to consider other options.

American Auto Shipping  »

American Auto Shipping

Offers multiple options for expedited shipping

Has 24/7 customer support

Only some auto shipping companies are willing to relocate motorcycles. American Auto Shipping is one of them, but that's not the only reason it’s our top choice for motorcycle owners. The company also has availability across 49 states, maintains an excellent A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and has multiple tiers for expedited shipping. This last feature means that you can select from three options when deciding how quickly you need your vehicle delivered and how much you're willing to pay, allowing for the most flexibility in terms of timing and prices. The options range from pickup windows of one to five days, one to two days, and within 24 hours.

One detail that requires clarification is that the company's website states that it can ship to Alaska, but the online quote generator contradicts this. To coordinate shipping to or from Alaska, you will have to call the company directly to inquire about available service options. As the company's name implies, there is only domestic shipping available, not international.

SGT Auto Transport  »

Ships a variety of vehicle types

Offers price matching

Provides 24/7 customer support

Available in 49 states

Charges significantly more for protective enclosed transport

Must call to request tracking updates

Some car shipping companies shy away from handling more fragile luxury and expensive cars, but SGT Auto Transport isn't afraid to take on these more challenging shipments. The company offers a premium enclosed luxury and classic car service that ensures your special set of wheels will be delivered safely and promptly. SGT is also able to ship other types of vehicles like motorcycles.

Although there is no central online tracking system available, there is 24/7 customer support, which means you can call to inquire about your shipment status at any time. Premium shipping services can get a bit pricey, but SGT has a price-matching program that may be able to help save you money if you receive a lower quote from a competitor.

Something to note is that the company lacks a terminal-to-terminal shipping option and only offers door-to-door delivery. While this is more convenient, terminal-to-terminal delivery is often cheaper. One other drawback is that the company doesn’t cover Alaska, so classic car owners there will need to consider other options.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, the best car shipping company boils down to the one that can service your specific needs. Each of the companies on this list has its own specialties, ranging from abundant cost-cutting options to international shipping to services for motorcycles and classic cars. Of all these choices, we think the best car shipping company is Montway Auto Transport for its wide range of services that will cater to most customers.

Things To Consider When Choosing a Car Shipping Company

Type of transport.

There are two main types of car shipping methods offered by car shipping companies: open and enclosed transport.

  • Open transport: Your car is loaded on an open carrier truck. This means your car will be on an elevated platform for shipping and will be exposed to the outdoors throughout the trip. You’ve likely seen open carrier trucks on the road. This is typically less costly due to the lack of protection from the elements.
  • Enclosed transport: Your car is an enclosed transport carrier offering your vehicle more protection, as it’s shielded from weather and outside debris. If you have a luxury vehicle or just want more protection for your vehicle, you may want to consider this option, although it will cost you quite a bit more.

Another option not as common is a drive-away service. An experienced driver will drive your car to your desired destination. Something to consider with this option, though, is how many additional miles it may put in your vehicle. For that reason, newer vehicles are better suited for drive-away service.

Shipping a car can be a pricey endeavor and several factors play into the total cost. The most influential factor is the location the car will depart from and the destination it’s traveling to. A longer or more complex route will increase the price due to gas usage and time. Another cost factor is the type of transport you choose with enclosed transport being more expensive than the others. Additionally, the size and weight of your vehicle will play into cost, as a larger and heavier vehicle will be more expensive to ship. Finally, the time of year will also affect cost. More people tend to ship vehicles as they transition from summer to winter homes and vice versa. During these times of year, it could be more costly simply due to supply and demand.

Coverage Area

This may seem a bit obvious, but it's still a vital consideration when selecting a car shipping company. Be sure the company provides coverage both where your car is currently located and where your car will end up. You can call the company or fill out an online price quote form where available to determine whether the company can handle your request.

Most of the companies on this list have nationwide availability, but it's worth noting that not all "nationwide" companies have a presence in Alaska, or even Washington, D.C. International shipping is frequently an advertised option, but you'll need to contact the company directly to ensure it can deliver to your specific country.

If you're using a broker, remember that it's the terms of the local carrier you'll need to follow – and sometimes the broker might not convey accurate information. In other words, it's always best to confirm the details with the people physically handling your auto shipping.

Customer Support

Customer support is an important feature of any company, but that's especially true for car shippers. Many companies don't offer online tracking, so the only way to know your car's current location is to call the company and ask. It's preferable, of course, to have GPS tracking included with your shipment, but shipping companies have been surprisingly slow to implement this technology.

You should also consider whether 24/7 customer service is an important feature for you. Many customers may not need or expect to be able to call their car shippers at 3 a.m., but for those changing time zones or using expedited shipping, 24-hour customer service can be vitally important. If you're shipping internationally, consider the time zone difference as well. You probably won't want to wake up in the middle of the night just to call your shipping company before its office closes.

Everyone loves to save money. Why pay more than you need to? That's why cost-cutters should pay close attention to the fine print to see if they can receive any discounts when selecting a car shipping company.

Some discounts can be price-matching programs. In this case, if you can find a competitor that gives you a lower quote, the original company will match it. This can result in you getting a better service for less money. Discounts are also sometimes available for active or retired military personnel, students, seniors, returning customers, medical professionals, first responders, and even customers able to pay the final bill in cash.

If you have some flexibility with your schedule, you may also want to see if a company you're interested in has different rates for different times of the year. Busier months, like winter on snowbird routes from north to south, can mean higher rates than less-busy seasons.

Customer Reviews

We cite the Better Business Bureau's letter grade ratings when evaluating customer evaluations of car shipping companies. These ratings incorporate a company's complaint history from customers, making it a reasonable way to gauge customer satisfaction. Most, but not all, of the companies on this list received an A+ rating. However, even a top-tier company can have customer complaints.

We recommend taking a look at individual reviews to see how many negative reviews there might be and whether they raise any red flags for you. For example, if you’re considering a company that provides international shipping but you notice that all of the company's negative reviews are in response to international shipping issues, this should set off some alarm bells.

Put more simply, the more research you do on a company and the more customer reviews you read, the better. An informed choice is always a smarter choice.

Specialty Services

There can be some highly specific customer needs when it comes to shipping vehicles. Those needs can range from ultra-fast expedited shipping to the relocation of classic cars, motorcycles, and ATVs to military personnel relocation. Whatever need you might have as a customer, chances are there's a car shipping company out there that can accommodate it. As always, the more research you can do, the better. The more companies you can find that are able to accommodate your move, the more quotes you can acquire to find the best deal.

Keep in mind that while some companies may provide a specialized service, others may excel at it. For example, many companies could move an active military member's vehicle to a new location, but Nexus Auto Transport specifically advertises its military-friendly options and provides additional discounts to both active and retired service members to help sweeten the deal. If you have a special service need that is not a standard practice at most shipping companies, consider seeking companies that specifically target people like you.

How We Chose the Best Car Shipping Companies

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, our contributor consulted with two experts: one in the auto shipping industry and another in the moving industry. We then deeply researched the major auto shipping companies and reviewed their strengths and weaknesses in categories like types of shipping services, coverage area and destinations served, vehicle tracking options, insurance coverage and liability protection, customer reviews, pricing, special services, and customer support. We found many car shipping companies to provide satisfactory services, but we specified each company's particular strengths to help you narrow down your selection.

Car Shipping FAQ

Numerous factors can affect the total cost of shipping your vehicle, with the most important being shipping distance. The farther your vehicle needs to be transported, the more you'll pay due to fuel and the driver's time. The second most important factor is how fast you need to ship your vehicle. "If you've got more flexibility in your pickup and delivery dates, carriers are generally able to offer better prices as opposed to very urgent or day-specific moving," says Nathan Reid, president and CEO of uShip Logistics.

Other factors that affect cost include open versus enclosed transport, the type of vehicle, and the time of year. "As vacationers and retirees leave Florida to spend summer in the Midwest and New England, northbound rates along I-75 and I-95 can surge as much as 50% between March and May," says Reid.

The two primary car shipping options are open and enclosed multi-deck trailer transport. "Open is going to be the most affordable, and those are the trailers you'll see on the highway with multiple cars stacked on the open levels of the trailer," says Reid.

Enclosed, on the other hand, puts your car in an enclosed trailer that ensures your vehicle is not vulnerable to weather or any other external elements during the shipping process. "Carriers can only do so much to mitigate the risk of other clients' vehicle leaks, so requesting top load is usually the safest bet," Reid advises.

Although your carrier might allow you to keep some personal belongings in your car during transport, it may not be the best idea. The shipping company could increase your overall cost if the belongings add substantial weight to your vehicle. "You'll also have to pay for insurance for all of those belongings as well as the car," says Nick Valentino, vice president of market operations for moving company Bellhop.

Some car shipping companies might not want to take on the liability of belongings at all, but if you’re able to ship some personal belongings in your car, make sure they're hidden to reduce the chance of a break-in.

Before you hand over your vehicle to the shipping company, do a thorough inspection of any existing damage. Snapping photos and taking videos are great ways to have some evidence on your side if your vehicle encounters any damage during shipment.

If there is any damage to your vehicle upon delivery, Reid advises "to alert your shipping provider immediately and only sign a BOL [bill of lading] that reflects the conditions you observe."

As hard as shipping companies might try to deliver every vehicle on time, weather conditions, traffic, and accidents can all contribute to delayed deliveries. Try to be considerate and reasonable about such delays, as many are likely beyond the shipping company's control.

But, according to Valentino, you might be entitled to some compensation. "Most shipping companies will compensate you if your car is delayed beyond a certain window," he says. Check the fine print for details on the delivery window to see if you're entitled to some form of compensation if your vehicle is late.

Shipping your car puts less mileage and wear and tear on your vehicle (unless you choose a drive-away service). It also saves you time from physically driving your car to your destination. Road trips are not only time-consuming, but they take a lot of planning and energy. Avoiding a long trip like that could also save you on car insurance, as some policies have higher rates for cars traveling long distances. Additionally, enclosed transport protects your car from debris and the elements which is especially beneficial for expensive luxury and specialty vehicles.

A new look at autonomous-vehicle infrastructure

Imagine a future in which fleets of autonomous buses and shuttles effortlessly navigate through city streets to their designated stops. Ridesharing services dispatch shared autonomous vehicles (AVs) to pick up multiple passengers traveling along similar routes. Robo-taxis drop off passengers at subway stops for the next legs of their trips. Some traditional car owners decide that they no longer need personal vehicles because shared-mobility AVs fulfill their needs. Road congestion drops because there are fewer vehicles.

Stay current on your favorite topics

Now imagine an alternative future in which everyone who once owned a traditional car instead has an AV. Many people without licenses also purchase AVs for their personal use, even though they haven’t had a car for years or never owned one. Passenger-miles traveled increase by 25 percent. 1 Eric Hannon, Colin McKerracher, Itamar Orlandi, and Surya Ramkumar, “ An integrated perspective on the future of mobility ,” October 2016. AVs circle while waiting for their owners to finish shopping or running errands if no parking spaces are available, or else they run a variety of errands, ranging from delivering groceries to picking up dry cleaning, themselves. City streets become even more gridlocked.

Which scenario will emerge around the world? The answer will depend, in part, on whether public and private stakeholders invest in the infrastructure required to enable shared autonomous mobility (SAM). But this issue gets relatively little attention now, since companies, investors, inventors, and policy makers are rightfully focusing on issues, such as safety, related to the AVs themselves. Stakeholders will soon begin discussing AV-infrastructure requirements in more detail, however, as they undertake capital planning. Some of the decisions they make now could determine whether SAM gains traction.

To help transportation officials consider the road ahead, we have identified a potential path forward for AV infrastructure that enables SAM. It includes plans for basic structural and roadway alterations that can promote AV growth, as well as improvements specifically geared at encouraging shared mobility. Transportation leaders could think about a phased approach as they consider these improvements—first implementing some infrastructure changes during AV pilots, then making additional accommodations to suit mixed traffic (AVs and traditional cars), and finally creating infrastructure that supports a complete transition to AVs.

Autonomous-vehicle infrastructure at a crossroads

With the right infrastructure to enable shared mobility, multipassenger robo-taxis could account for 500 billion miles traveled on US roads—about 9 percent of the total—by 2030. By 2040, they could account for 50 percent of all miles traveled. In addition to less traffic congestion, vehicle emissions could plunge. With more AVs in use that make fewer errors than human drivers, transportation fatalities could decline. Real estate previously dedicated to parking could be repurposed into commercial or residential properties. These improvements, in combination, could produce economic benefits totaling $850 billion annually.

To get the enabling infrastructure ready for this future state, public officials could determine whether potential transportation improvements promote SAM—both for current AVs and later models that will be fully autonomous. If they design structures with SAM in mind now, they will not have to make costly modifications later. Other related issues to consider include road pricing, zoning, licensing, and insurance.

What steps must cities take to realize the full benefits of autonomous vehicles?

As the public sector considers potential infrastructure upgrades, it will be important to monitor changes in AV technology . Recently, there has been increasing debate about how much stakeholders should invest in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) systems, such as sensors in roads or street signs that send signals to AVs, helping them navigate city streets. There has also been much industry debate about which V2I technology is most appropriate, with opinion divided about the competing merits of dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) and cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) systems. Although evaluating specific V2I technologies is beyond the scope of this article, it is important to note the rapid growth of the V2I ecosystem (and that’s true even though automotive OEMs are piloting AVs equipped with in-car sensors and dynamic maps that allow them to operate independently). If public-sector leaders keep these potential technology changes in mind, they will make informed decisions about infrastructure.

Basic upgrades: Keeping infrastructure assets in good repair

Only 41 percent of US roads meet the requirements for a “good ride,” as scored according to the International Roughness Index. Potholes, poor striping, and other maintenance issues not only create safety problems but also present challenges to AVs. If governments consider adopting faster, more efficient approaches to improving basic infrastructure, they could reduce these problems. In addition to improving safety and reducing costs related to vehicle wear and tear, their infrastructure investments would enable AV pilot testing. For example, maintenance teams could restripe poorly marked streets with six-inch-wide, highly retroreflective lines to help prevent cars from wandering off the road. These lines bounce light back to the original source, resulting in greater visibility than reflective lines.

Even after initial repairs are made, road maintenance will be a major and ongoing concern. Deteriorating roads aren’t only a nuisance for human drivers: they are major impediments for AVs. To promote higher levels of autonomy, mapping software must be highly accurate—for difficult intersections, for instance, it will need to record dimensions down to the inch. If roads are deteriorating and road markers are fading, the physical structure of the intersection will constantly change. Even minute alterations could thus impede the growth of AVs.

To avoid problems as AVs become more common, transportation officials could consider making more systematic repairs than they have traditionally done. Officials might also think about forming partnerships with mapping companies to ensure that high-definition AV maps are quickly updated, in a cost-effective manner, when essential repairs are made.

In some cases, public officials could use AV growth as an opportunity to improve capital planning for streets. They might eliminate some costly repairs by devoting more funds to predictive maintenance. Such efforts might include sending out drones or AVs to spot potential problems before they escalate. Officials could also consider forming partnerships with various stakeholders, such as utility companies, transportation departments, and cable companies, to ensure coordinated and cost-effective street repairs. For instance, they could agree to conduct repairs and install new utility infrastructure on the same stretch of road simultaneously, or do so in quick succession, eliminating the need for multiple road closures.

Shared mobility: Shaping the future of transit

SAM may not be an immediate concern for public officials who are busy juggling priorities and dealing with tight budgets. But investing in SAM now could produce some immediate improvements in congestion and transportation, even though traditional vehicles far outnumber AVs. Acting now on a forecasted need is also less costly than acting later on an existing or emerging need.

Structures and accommodations that may be needed to support SAM include the following (exhibit):

  • Support facilities. Autonomous fleets will need large support facilities to service and charge AVs. If cities allow private companies to operate vehicle fleets, officials might only need to regulate support facilities; their private partners would bear all infrastructure expenses. But if officials want to create public fleets, they should consider planning for the development of support facilities, much as they do when creating or enhancing today’s bus systems. In some cases, they could repurpose existing facilities that are no longer essential, such as parking garages that are no longer seeing high demand. For most support facilities, the major costs will involve rent (unless the public sector owns the structure), labor, and creation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs). Transportation officials must be thoughtful about the placement of these facilities to avoid disrupting the urban environment and damaging health, traffic, and civic life.
  • Staging areas. To avoid congestion, AV fleets and shared-ride services need locations where they can idle when picking up or discharging passengers. One solution might involve converting existing parking spots into staging areas accessible to multiple fleet operators.
  • Curb modifications. In most cities, the curb predominantly serves as a space for parking. Transportation leaders could consider pricing this resource more dynamically, taking market demand into account, to free up spaces. They could also designate it for specific purposes at different times (designated with signs or beacons that send signals to AVs). During rush hour, the curb might be a pickup site for AV shuttles that are part of the public transportation system. Later, it could provide parking for food trucks during lunch and a site for freight delivery at night. Transforming the curb may encourage SAM because travelers could share costs related to drop-off, especially during times when the price increases. Dynamically pricing curb space could also reduce congestion and cut down on vehicles circling—current problems that will extend into the AV world of the future. It has been estimated, for example, that nearly one-third of traffic in New York City consists of vehicles circling the block, looking for underpriced street parking. Pricing this scarce resource consistent with demand would also provide delivery trucks and ridesharing services with more options for conducting drop-offs and pickups, since more spaces would be available. One substantial benefit of this shift: less double-parking.
  • Mobility hubs. For SAM to flourish, travelers must be able to transfer seamlessly between different modes. A commuter might take a robo-taxi from home to the nearest train station then grab an electric scooter to get the final mile from the train stop to the office. If this process is too difficult, passengers might opt to take a private AV from point to point—a trend that would increase delays and unreliability. To avoid this situation, officials could consider investing in more mobility hubs where travelers going in the same direction can access shared transportation, including AVs. These facilities could include micromobility-pickup locations (places where people could get scooters or bikes) next to subway stops, or large transit facilities that also contain dining and shopping options at critical nodes.

There are several infrastructure options transit leaders could consider to promote shared ridership.

Long-term planning: Preparing for a completely autonomous world

Within cities, at least, a fully autonomous world awaits. Even though this world may be many years down the road, public officials should understand the changes ahead and consider the modifications needed to accommodate such systems. Right now, stoplights and street signs are geared to human drivers. In the future, cities may replace much of this signage with a digital transportation-management system that feeds key information, such as speed limits and turning restrictions, directly to vehicles.

Roadways themselves will also need to evolve as AVs become the dominant form of transportation. For instance, officials might consider the extent to which safety enhancements, such as raised curbs or guardrails, are beneficial. While a distracted human driver might accidentally veer over the curb or into another lane, the probability of such accidents are expected to be lower with AVs. On low-traffic urban streets, it might be possible to expand walkable space without banning all vehicles entirely. Many streets could be narrowed, since AVs will be designed to operate in close proximity to other vehicles with very low risk of collision. AVs will also be smaller if they are fully capable of self-driving—for instance, mirrors would no longer be necessary, and bumpers would be less bulky, in keeping with a different crash-risk profile (fewer collisions overall, and higher proportion of accidents with minor damage).

Funding autonomous-vehicle-infrastructure upgrades: possible approaches

Federal, state, and local governments are already struggling with budget deficits, and transportation is underresourced. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the United States has a $836 billion backlog of highway- and bridge-capital needs. 2 “Roads,” 2017 infrastructure report card , American Society of Civil Engineers, 2017, infrastructurereportcard.org. Adding to the problem, the growth of AVs and EVs could exacerbate the current funding gap by 22 percent—about $80 billion—by 2040. (Given that most AVs will be electric , fuel-tax revenues may fall by more than half). And without the need to license and register drivers or personal cars, various fees could also fall substantially. These shifts will likely present a daunting financial challenge for the public sector.

Public officials could mitigate the funding gap by finding new revenue streams. When considering their options, it would be helpful if they investigate whether new revenue streams would incentivize or discourage more cost-efficient SAM. In many cases, these streams may come from public–private partnerships (PPPs), which are becoming more common with large transportation projects.

The road to seamless urban mobility

The road to seamless urban mobility

PPPs provide means for encouraging the diverse mix of capital investments that may be needed to support the growth of AVs and SAM. (No single public or private organization has the resources needed to make all required infrastructure upgrades.) With all PPPs, careful consideration must be given to ownership issues, contract terms, and the potential value of the future revenue streams. Prime mobility-related PPPs that encourage SAM might focus on the following activities:

  • developing the infrastructure necessary to price the curb dynamically and collect revenues (for instance, by installing smart meters that display current prices, accept payments, and notify servers if they are occupied)
  • bundling a variety of small capital improvements across a broad geography to capture economies of scale and attract the most efficient and sophisticated private-sector companies (for instance, by repairing multiple bridges simultaneously)
  • setting up and operating mobility services, such as AV fleets, on behalf of a city, following the model that some have implemented for bikeshare programs
  • constructing infrastructure to collect user fees on shared-AV-only lanes

The greater use of shared AVs won’t just change transportation systems—it could also breathe new life into cities. If transportation officials begin looking into SAM issues now, before AVs become widespread, they can create a future in which traffic flows smoothly and predictably, public transportation operates efficiently, and overall emissions drop. Residents could have more parks, restaurants, and businesses to enjoy in their own neighborhoods, giving them a greater connection to the local community. Risks to bicyclists and pedestrians, which have been growing in recent years, could also fall. The benefits that such changes could bring to society and the environment could be beyond price.

During the summer months and around the holidays, many of us head out on road trips and consider taking our feline family members along.

Summer is also a peak time for relocating across town or across country.

The problem is that most cats don’t feel safe in the car. They may cry or yowl, hide in their carrier, and even soil due to fear. That means an unpleasant trip for them and you.

It is possible to help your cat feel more secure in the car. Some may even learn to love it. We’re going to walk you through the steps to desensitize your cat to being in the car.

We’ll also recommend travel items to bring in the car and for a hotel stay so that you both have a safe and comfortable trip.

Getting Your Cat Ready for a Road Trip

Step 1: get your kitty feeling comfortable in their carrier..

If they're going to ride in the car, like you, they’ll need to be safely “buckled up” to protect not just them but everyone in the car and on the road.

After all, unrestrained cats can be a distraction, interfering with your ability to steer or brake, and even become a dangerous projectile in the event of a crash or sudden stop.

What if your cat is wearing a harness and leash? If the car is moving, I still say keep them secure in a carrier. If you want to let them stretch their legs on the harness and leash while the car is stopped and windows are up, go for it. Just keep in mind that you’ve got to get them back in the carrier when you start moving again, and they may not love that.

It could be less stressful for everyone to stick with the carrier in the car and try the harness and leash INSIDE your hotel or destination. More on the dangers of letting your cat out of the car on their harness and leash later in the article.

So, your first step starts well before your trip. Spend some time training your cat to love their carrier – we have an article on that process – before the big travel day arrives.

Don't have a carrier for your cat yet? Check out our carrier recommendations, including carriers that are crash-test certified . If your cat is going to be spending a lot of long hours in the car, you may opt for a larger carrier than normal. We cover that, too. Just keep in mind you’ll want that carrier sooner rather than later, so you can use it during the pre-travel training.

Step 2: Get your cat feeling comfortable in the car.

Now that your kitty feels better in their carrier, it’s time to help them feel comfortable in the car. Here are some steps to help you do that.

Pro Tip: Car acclimation is best done with two people … one to drive the car, the other to pet, praise, and treat kitty. It can be done with one person, too, but very carefully.

You’re going to do short sessions in the car – your cat dictates how long the sessions will be. The number of sessions depends on how quickly your cat gets comfortable. The main thing is that you don’t want to push your cat past their comfort zone. Your cat should always be calm.

You might be thinking that even if your cat is scared, leaving them in the car in spite of their fear will eventually show them they don’t have to be afraid. Nope! That’s not how cat brains work. Instead, think of it as starting at a really low intensity so your cat doesn’t have to be scared. As they’re ready, you slowly turn up the intensity.

If you turn it up too far and they get nervous, just end the session and lower the intensity for the next session.

Show them there’s no reason to be afraid because you’re not going to push them too far. And they’re getting good things through the entire process, so you’re actually turning a scary thing into a positive thing.

Take your cat out to the car in their carrier – covered on three sides with a towel or blanket for security.

With the car parked and not running and the doors and windows closed (weather permitting), sit in the back seat with your cat in their carrier. Partially open one of the carrier doors if you can do so without your cat trying to get out.

Then, make good things happen. Give treats (make sure it's a treat they love ), pets, praise, and show them this is a positive experience. Do this for just a few minutes (or longer if your cat is really enjoying it). Then, take them inside and end with treats and love. You’ll continue these sessions, gradually making them longer as your cat is comfortable, until your cat seems nice and calm, spending time in the car while in their carrier.

Next, you’ll turn up the intensity a bit by starting the car. Make sure the radio is off or very low (cats find classical music calming). And repeat the previous step.

Spend a few minutes in the back seat making good things happen for your cat while the car is running. If the engine really scares them, keep it short — just 1 minute with some treats. Again, you can gradually increase the length of time your cat is in the car, getting good things while the engine is on.

Caution: If your car is parked in your garage, either open your garage door or move your car out of the garage. Carbon monoxide is very dangerous for both of you!

Once your kitty is doing well with the car on, it’s time to turn the intensity up again. Time for a short drive.

Note: If they’re too nervous to eat treats, they’re probably not ready for this step. Back it up and spend more time on the previous steps.

It may just be pulling out of the driveway in the first couple of sessions. That’s just fine. You’ll work up to longer drives. And your cat will learn that being in the car doesn’t mean going to the vet. Never push these drives further than your cat is comfortable with. Also, be sure to drive calmly and go easy on the gas pedal and brakes.

Since each cat and each situation are different, it could take anywhere from a few sessions to several months for a cat to feel calm during car travel.

Car Travel Logistics With Cats

Will a cat use a litter box in a car.

Jumping right down to “business,” … depending on the duration of your travel adventures with kitty and where you’re winding up, you’re going to have to deal with litter box accommodations. This is the case both when you’re on the road and when you get to your hotel or destination.

Just because you give your cat access to a box doesn’t mean they’ll use it, especially if they’re nervous.

Cats don’t like to eliminate when they feel unsafe. They'll likely choose to do their business once you get to your destination. It’s nothing to worry about unless they go more than about 24 hours without peeing. At that point, call your vet and see what they suggest.

When I moved with my cats, and we had 8-hour days in the car, they held it all day and most of the night.

If they’re willing, you can help your cat take care of business on the road in a few different ways.

First, get them a good travel litter box. You’ll use the same litter they use at home, and (perhaps) even a litter attractant.

A good travel litter box will be large enough for your cat to fit in yet small enough to fit in their carrier. It will also be waterproof and sturdy. You can use a small plastic litter box or there are also disposable litter box options available.

We have travel litter box and large carrier recommendations here .

Set the travel box up in your home as an alternate option before your trip so your cat can get used to it. Don’t replace your regular boxes with the travel box, though. Have all options available.

New call-to-action

If Your Carrier Can't Fit a Litter Box

Letting your cat out of a carrier to use a box placed in the car isn’t ideal. I actually rescued a kitten from the roadside once without a carrier. That kitten ended up inside my dashboard. So, if you think your cat can’t hide in dangerous places within the confines of your car, you’re wrong.

If your trip isn’t too long and their carrier isn’t large enough to fit a litter box, you can go with a larger litter box that they can use at the hotel or destination.

Note: If your cat uses the smaller travel litter box on the road, don’t consider replacing your larger boxes at home. Tiny boxes are not ideal and don’t fit your cat’s instinctual needs. They’re not a good long-term option. They’re the lesser of two evils when you’re traveling — the other evil being your cat peeing in the carrier.

Should You Let Your Cat Go Outside?

My vote is no unless you have a cat who is completely comfortable with travel, being in new places, and seeing and hearing strange people, pets, and sounds.

The first concern is that no harness is 100% escape-proof. If your cat gets scared, they can and will get out of that harness and take off.

Second, they’re going to be surrounded by newness — smells, sights, sounds, things you can’t control. Even if they don’t get scared, the idea that you’ll be able to get them to focus on peeing at that moment isn’t very likely. Cats don’t pee and poop on cue the way dogs can. It’s safer to keep them in the car.

What Do You Do With Your Cat When You Have to Go?

If the temperatures aren’t too hot or cold to leave your cat in the car, just leave them in their carrier and go about your business. Just make it quick!

Cover three sides of the carrier so they feel more secure and are less of a target for theft. Use a light cover (blanket) for warm days and a heavier cover for cooler days. Both should still allow for airflow.

It's usually safe between about 40–65 degrees F (4–18 degrees C), though every cat and every situation will be different, so use this as a rough guide.

Talk to your vet about more specific safe temperature ranges for your cat based their age, breed, and any chronic medical conditions they may have or medications they may be on. If the temperatures are outside of that range, you’re going to have to take some precautions when making your own pit stops that take you away from your car.

In some cases, it may be possible for you to bring your cat into the bathroom with you in their carrier.

Quick tips if you must leave your cat in the car

  • Some cars now have pet mode , like Telsa, Chevrolet Bolt, Rivian, and other Form and BMW models. Caution: If you decide to leave your engine running in a gas-powered car, be aware that car engines and air conditioner compressors can and do fail, leading to excessively hot temperatures building up in the car quickly. Similar malfunctions can happen in EV cars, too, and if the battery dies, the cooling system will shut off.
  • If leaving your car and running the A/C or heat isn’t possible or practical, pre-cool or pre-heat your car the best you can by running the system on high for several minutes before you get out. Then, be quick!
  • Move their carrier from the back seat to the back floor. Since hot air rises, it should be a bit cooler on the floor. There are fans made for keeping pets cool in the car , but we really can't overstate this: pets should never be left in a closed car, even in the shade or with cooling devices. In this case, it's simply for a quick amount of time.
  • Park in the most well-shaded spot you can find.
  • Park with your front windshield facing the sun and put up a reflective windshield sun shade like this one .
  • Cracking the windows doesn’t make a huge difference, but it also doesn’t hurt (so long as your cat is securely in their carrier and there’s no danger of someone reaching into your car and stealing them and your stuff).
  • Make sure you leave your cat plenty of water.
  • If it's cold outside, add a warm blanket or fleece to your cat's carrier for them to snuggle up. If it's sunny, move the carrier to a sunny spot in the car.
  • Be as quick with your stop as possible. If it’s a food break, get it to go from a drive-thru and eat it in your car.

Where to Stay When Traveling With Your Cat

Road trips and long-distance moves with cats will often require hotel stays. But not all hotels, motels, or rentals are pet-friendly. And just because they say they’re “pet” friendly doesn’t mean they’re “cat” friendly. So, plan ahead. Call to confirm they take cats and reserve the room or rental in advance.

Pro Tip: “Pet-friendly” means other pets likely stayed in that room recently! Not everyone uses flea and other parasite protection on their cats and dogs. Make sure your cat is protected before heading out on the road! Learn more about safe and effective parasite prevention for your cat , and talk to your veterinarian.

What to Do With Your Cat in the Hotel or Rental

Once you’re out of the car, you’re faced with a question. Do you let your cat out in the hotel or rental to explore, or do you keep them confined? There’s a lot that goes into the answer. Here are some things to consider:

Is your cat relaxed in new places? Being in their carrier in the car is different than being in a completely new room with smells and places to hide.

Does your cat chew, climb, or otherwise destroy things? I couldn’t let my cat into a new space without putting cord protectors on every cord, or they’d be chewed in a matter of minutes.

Are there hiding places you can’t get to or unsafe spaces your cat can reach? The last thing you want is your cat stuck in the vents of a hotel or squeezing through that tiny hole in the wall behind the fridge in your rental. It happens.

Is it clean? Not to get gross, but you may not want your cat rolling around on a motel floor or getting under the bed.

Is it safe from toxins? There could be rodent traps or pest poison in the room that could be dangerous for your cat.

Is there any chance they’re going to pee on something? Yep, it happened to me on my road trip. My cat was stressed and peed all over the fabric carrier, and it soaked through to the bed. Talk about embarrassing. And there's sometimes an additional cleaning fee for mishaps like this.

Confinement for Safety

I like the idea of bringing along a much larger, collapsible pet pen for overnight use. They’re plenty big enough for a good-sized litter box and everything your cat needs. There’s even room to play. Just make sure you get one with a top, or your cat will jump right out.

If you want to let your cat out on a harness and leash or heavily supervised, you have the option. But you’ve got the pet pen as a backup just in case you need it. You never know how a cat is going to react in a new space, especially when you’re sleeping or in the shower and they’re unsupervised. Here are a few great options:

Travel Considerations for Cats With Chronic Health Issues

Before striking out on the road for a long trip or moving with a cat who has a chronic medical condition or is on long-term medications — like diabetes , hyperthyroidism , chronic kidney disease , or heart disease — there are a few precautions you should take.

  • Make sure your cat had a recent (ideally within the past month or so) exam with their vet. You’ll have more peace of mind knowing that their condition is as well managed as possible and that they’re as healthy as can be before hitting the road with them. Your vet will also have recommendations for making their trip as comfortable and safe as possible.
  • Bring a copy of your cat’s medical records with you! This should include recent exam notes, laboratory test results, and medication/supplement names and dosages. Your vet can often print these out (with enough notice), and they may even subscribe to an app or other service that allows you to keep updated copies of such records with you always on your phone. This will make visiting another vet on the road much easier.
  • Especially for cats with known chronic health concerns, it’s a good idea to know about a few vet hospitals along your route and in the area of your destination before you head out. See the vet locator tools listed in the next emergency section to start searching.
  • If your cat is on a special prescription diet, like for their kidneys, make sure to stock up on it from your vet before leaving. It’s not always easy to get prescription diet refills when you’re away from home. You should take enough with you to last for the duration of your trip PLUS an additional (at least) 2 weeks.
  • Similarly, be sure to stock up on your pet’s medications and supplements, as well as any supplies you need for them. This would include needles and a travel-sized sharps container (or larger needle container ) for safely disposing of and storing used needles for diabetic cats, pills for blood pressure, overactive thyroid, and any other chronic medications. Again, you should take with you enough to last for the duration of your trip PLUS an additional (at least) 2 weeks.
  • If your cat is diabetic and on insulin, don’t forget a cooler and ice packs to help keep it cool while in the car. You can also look into a cooler that plugs into your car’s cigarette lighter or USB, like these: Cooluli Mini , Wagan 14L , or the Wagan 24L (which could even store some of your food and drinks for the road). Pro Tip: Depending on the type of insulin your cat is on, you may be able to get an insulin “pen” that may be more stable outside of the fridge and easier to administer to your cat. It's still advisable to use a cooling case for the pens . Talk to your vet to see if an insulin pen is an option for your cat — it isn’t for all cats, but if it is for yours, it could be a great travel (and even long-term) solution for you.

Emergencies on the Road With Your Cat

It’s a good idea to plan ahead and map out a few 24-hour Emergency Clinics on your route, just in case. Try this vet emergency locator .

Have your hometown veterinary clinic number handy, too. For less serious issues, call them first. They may be able to give you advice or let you know if it’s a true emergency.

Make sure you have a card in your wallet or attached to your cat’s carrier with your cat’s name, the number where you can be reached during travel, and an emergency contact who is not traveling with you. If your cat has medical issues, you should list those as well or the contact info for your veterinary clinic. If there’s an accident, your car is stolen, or something happens where you’re separated from your cat, emergency services will have options.

I just got this great set for myself (featured below). The keychain says “pet home alone,” with instructions to look in your wallet for a card with emergency contact info. It’s meant to notify emergency services if you’re in an emergency situation and someone needs to care for your pet at home. In this case, you’d just include a note on the card that you’re traveling with your cat in the car.

It’s also vital to ensure your cat is microchipped and the contact information is up-to-date (including a way you can be reached on the road).

Qantas boss says demand for premium class seats at record levels

QANTAS Airways chief executive officer Vanessa Hudson said premium-class bookings are at record levels as air travel brushes off a global cost-of-living crisis.

Demand for seats in the airline’s first, business and premium-economy class cabins is “stronger than ever,” Hudson said at an investment conference hosted by Macquarie Group in Sydney on Wednesday. Overall demand on Qantas’s domestic and international network “continues to be really good,” she said.

Qantas’s international capacity should also return to pre-Covid levels this month, Husdon said. Premium economy is the industry’s most profitable class of travel, she added.

At the conference, Hudson struck a positive, though conciliatory, tone.

After taking the top job in September, she’s spent much of her time cleaning up the reputational mess left by her predecessor Alan Joyce. This week, Hudson announced a A$120 million (S$107 million) settlement with Australia’s antitrust regulator after selling tickets on thousands of phantom flights.

“This is not job done,” Hudson said, referring to the work required to repair the airline’s brand.

Qantas must ensure that recent improvements in flight reliability are consistently delivered if the airline is to win back disaffected customers, she said. To justify the high fares Qantas charges, flights must depart and arrive on time, and those better reliability levels should also feed into higher earnings, she said.

“When your network is operating to schedule, you’ve got the most efficient service levels,” she said. When flights run on time, the airline can avoid the extra costs of shuffling around crews and planes.

As Qantas’s former chief financial officer, Hudson has also injected extra funds into in-flight catering and call centre staffing. Last month she overhauled the frequent flyer business to make it easier for passengers to redeem air miles for flights.

The revamp of the loyalty division will deliver a boost to net income within 12 months, Hudson said. BLOOMBERG
