From Pip to Pint – A Thatchers Cider Tour

Thatchers Cider is without a doubt a Somerset staple, but despite choosing to lay my roots in the county I don’t yet have cider running through my veins. However that’s all about to change after a 2-hour cider tour with a cider tasting that would convert even the most cider-loathing person.

Disclaimer: I was invited to participate in a guided tour as part of the Visit Bristol Summer in Bristol campaign. I was not paid for this experience, and all opinions expressed in this article are my own.

Who are Thatchers Cider?

Thatchers Cider is a common sight across the West Country (and Australia apparently), but you’ll be forgiven for any lack of comprehension of the brand. Even as someone living in a cider-loving county, where the products are as synonymous on supermarket shelves as cheese and bread, I was completely unaware of the family traditions and innovations that form the brand.

As one of the few remaining independent cider makers, their heart-warming story from pip to pint truly showcases their dedication and pride in the products they produce, which they’ve lovingly crafted for over 115 years directly on Myrtle Farm.

Although Somerset is one of the main cider-producing counties in England, Thatchers is one of the few to use their own apple orchards – with around 500 acres – rather than farming their apples abroad. With complete transparency of the varieties grown, a bottle of Thatchers Cider can always promise the highest and standardised quality.

Thatchers Cider Tour

The family has meticulously planned each part of the plant-to-package process to produce around 50,000 canned and bottled products an hour.  During the 2-hour cider tour , you’ll be guided around the orchard and mills to learn more about the art of independent cider-making. Public tours run Wednesday to Sunday at £15 pp for a 2-hour tour with cider tasting.

Here are some of my highlights.

The Exhibition Orchard

The Exhibition Orchard pays homage to the haughty apple, preserving around 458 of the rarest apple types that may otherwise be forgotten. Some of the varieties were rescued from the Long Ashton Research Station when the agricultural and horticultural research centre closed in 2002. Besides keeping a gene stock of the apple varieties, the farm completes ‘tree trials’ to discover new flavours that may be released as limited edition flavours. In fact, both the Rose and Haze were developed this way!

The orchards are even bee-friendly with on-site bee hives managed by local beekeepers to promote effective pollination.

The process is truly a sight to behold with tanks holding 200,000 pints, storing the cold liquid until its ready to be fermented. At the farm, you get to see the full-circle life of the apple from the orchard, to the cleaning and pressing, to bottling and packaging. The apple pomace – the waste – is taken away to be used for clean energy. Much of the process is automated, with a keen attention-to-detail, like the technology that ensures every label is perfectly placed each and every time.

The Historic Oaks Vats

Made in 1850 when Henry 8th was King, these 30ft tall oak vats still have a prime place at the farm. The largest of the 11 vats is said to hold around 135,500 pints of cider.

The Railway Inn

The restored traditional country pub on-site at Myrtle Farm is a reason to visit itself. It’s garnered quite a reputation as a foodie hot spot for its delectable menu that uses local, high-quality produce, even using cider in some dishes. And of course, it offers the full Thatchers cider range – as well as some limited edition flavours.

Traditional cider workers at the form loved the cider so much, they were paid in cider so enjoying it with a meal is nothing new. But perhaps less known is that the Thatchers offers such a range of styles that it can be paired with many different dishes or used in recipes .

It’s recommended to stop by for a bite to eat after your tour, and be sure to ask for a recommendation on a cider to complement the dish.

Thatchers Cider Shop

The on-site shop is open various times Tuesday to Sunday selling the all-important ciders, as well as limited editions, gifts, local cheeses and chutneys, books, cider mugs, glasses, and clothing.

The Strawberry Line

Amblers and cyclists can rejoice at knowing the farm sits on The Strawberry Line, a former railway path that is undergoing a transformation into a beautiful greenway through North and Mid-Somerset. Once completed, the path will be ‘ suitable for walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users, mobility scooters, and on some sections, equestrians’. The Railway Inn offers the perfect pit stop for those enjoying the path.

The lovely Heather from the Bristol Bloggers group invited me on a Thatchers Cider Tour at the Myrtle Farm in the town of Sandford, which is located in the North Somerset region of England.

As I’m a huge cider fan ( you can read all about that, and a short history of cider here ), of course I was excited for the visit to this well-known British cider company! We would be visiting the orchards, have a behind-the-scenes look at the Thatchers Factory (The apple cider mill), visit the restaurant and of course try of the ciders that the Thatchers family has been producing here for over 100 years!

As October is official Cider and Perry (apple and pear cider) month ánd the middle of harvest, what beter time that to visit now?

If you are curious and want to know where is Thatchers cider made, then follow along:

Thatchers Cider Tour

While I’ve been to quite a few brewery and distillery tours, I have actually never been to a cider mill before, and with it being my personal favourite drink, I was super interested in everything our guides had to tell us.

We get a short introduction to the farm and learn that it was 1904 when William John Thatcher first made his apple cider at Myrtle Farm. His farm workers got partly paid in cider, if you can believe it! Thatchers has always been a family business. That means that everything they do is about making sure that there’ll be a viable business for the next generation.

At The Thatchers Cider Farm, you can actually book your own cider tour  and learn all about the craft of cider making. Individual tours of max. 15 people run every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11 AM. This is what you can expect:

The Travel Tester - The Experience

The Orchard

We start our tour with dressing up in Thatchers hats, reflecting jackets (this is a working farm, after all – safety first!) and get a pair of rubber boots to wear if we want. After just 10 minutes outside the changing room, I’m happy that I got them, because it’s raining to hard that my umbrella is deteriorating on the spot and and my own shoes would have definitely stayed stuck in the muddy field, and I’d have to continue on socks.

My excitement for cider makes that I stop caring about the cold wind and water coming down and I soak up (literally) all the information our guide tells us about the different apple varieties, the growing process and the harvest they are in the middle of right now.

Alongside famous cider apples like Somerset Redstreak and Dabinett, and popular dessert apples like Katy, they also grow 458 varieties of rare traditional apples in their exhibition orchard, the largest collection of cider apple trees in England! Just 25 varieties of these are used for their ciders and each of them have their own role to play when it comes to flavour and aroma.

How is apple cider made? With a lot of passion, I can tell you now!

Coming straight from the orchards, all apples from Thatchers get tipped into their apple bays, that can hold up to 100 tons. They also have apples that they buy from different places, and they all stay strictly separated, to keep the flavours as pure as possible.

We were lucky, as a truckload of apples just arrived and got dumped into one of the bays to get washed. Definitely the most satisfying 10 seconds of my week, I can tell you!

When they are clean, the apples get mashed and then pressed (September to December) to extract the juice. With their 5 presses, they can press about 450 tonnes of apples every DAY at the height of the season! When the family installed their first press back in the 1950s, this was only about 6 tonnes… They’ve come a long way!

After checking out the bays, we went into the mill, where I couldn’t take any photos, but we saw how the cider fermentation process worked (special yeast is added to the apple juice, to turn sugar into alcohol), how they got cider from apple juice, where the cider got stored and later where the cider got bottled and labeled. It looked a little bit like a winery, to be honest, but then smelling of crisp apples everywhere. I preferred it!

At the bottom left, you can see the oak vats that give the Thatchers cider its distinct flavour. The cider matures in these vats for about 6 weeks. The vats are over 150 years old and over 30 feet (9 meters) tall! Inside the main building, the  cider bottles get filled and labeled.

The Tasting Room

After seeing the whole process from growing to bottling, it was time to hit the tasting room at Thatchers cider Somerset. Can’t say I wasn’t excited about this part of the tour. We started with their famous ‘Katy’ cider, which is named after one of their best apple varieties. It’s a medium dry cider and really clear of colour.

Then we also tasted a few others, among which the Apple ‘Cider Barn Redwood’ and ‘Cider Barn Redstreak’. Both excellent flavours and definitely some of my favourites.

Here is a quick overview of all the ciders that Thatchers currently have:

  • Thatchers Haze Cider [ABV 4.5% // Apple Cider Cloudy & Sweet]
  • Thatchers Gold Cider [ABV 4.8% //Apple Cider Smooth & Golden]
  • Thatchers Green Goblin Cider [ABV 5% // Medium Dry, Full Flavoured]
  • Thatchers Old Rascal Cider [ABV 4.5% // Medium Dry, Full Bodied]
  • Thatchers Vintage Cider [ABV 7.4% // Rich & Oak Aged]
  • Thatchers Katy Cider [ABV 7.4% // Light & Crisp]
  • Thatchers Summer Vintage Cider [ABV 7.4% // Floral & Fruity]

The Railway Inn Restaurant

After all the cider tasting, we were definitely all getting a bit hungry, but what we would find in the Thatchers restaurant called the “Railway Inn”, I don’t think any of us would have expected!

The food menu was not only extensive, but many of the dishes featured cider, which of course I had to try for myself. I went for the following:

  • STARTER > Mussels, Cockles & Clams (In a Thatchers Cider & Leek Sauce + Homemade Bread)
  • MAIN > Thatchers Cider & Honey Glazed Gammon (with Fried Duck Egg, Spiced Pineapple Chutney, Triple Cooked Chips & Mixed Leaf Salad)
  • PUDDING > 1 Scoop Salted Caramel Ice Cream + 1 Scoop Haze Sorbet.

And if you are wondering, YES, the Haze Sorbet is made of Cider. Because, why not?!

The Thatchers BBQ menu just looked amazing and all of the food that I ordered tasted to incredibly good, I would love to come back here one day and taste more of their menu. I can highly recommend spending some time here during your visit and make reservations for lunch or dinner.

Thatchers Cider Tour

This is a fabulous and very informative tour. The guides are spot on with their warmth and knowledge. The tour takes in every aspect of cider production and is timed to perfection. Samples of the cider provided at the end!

The shop is lovely, however the bottled ciders are expensive compared to supermarket prices. You expect the price to be cheaper as there's no distribution charges for buying from their factory shop . The plus factor is their draught cider is excellent value and good quality scrumpy.

Excellent tour guide and great value for £15! Highly recommend the tour guide Phill was very passionate about cider. If you like cider this is the place to come!

I booked the tour of thatchers on line £15 each worth every penny !! Little John was our tour guide very informative and charming followed by a meal at the railway inn delicious and staff were excellent wonderful day would definitely return

cider tour thatchers

Went to Thatchers for a tour with a group of 20. We were split into two groups of 10 and the guides we had (Marc and Sally) were excellent. So knowledgeable about all things Thatchers no matter what obscure questions we threw at them. The site is absolutely beautiful, with a pub and beer garden on site. Tour was followed by some samples of different Thatchers ciders and they even threw in a free baseball cap each so it was well worth the money. Highly recommended

Excellent day with lots of information with a extra bit of humour from Little John, only downfall was the main menu stopping so no food after the tour. But amazing vibe so much information about thatchers and history. Also the walk to the shop can be dangerous but very lovely surroundings

Getting to the core of cider at Thatchers

It’s the busiest time of the year at Myrtle Farm in Somerset home of Thatcher’s Cider . From August to November, the apples ripen and harvested and despatched for processing. The numbers involved are astonishing; the equipment required from the simplest to the most complex. This fourth generation cider family are definitely not resting on their laurels.

Visiting the Exhibition Orchard

The exhibition orchard where 450 apple trees grow

On a rather cold and wet October morning, a group of Bristol Bloggers gathered in the exhibition orchard at the start of our tour. As far as the eye could see stretched apple trees. This is an important ‘library’ of 452 apple varieties (two of each sort). With new types of cider in mind, the blenders use these apples as a reference and when they find a variety of particular interest, they scale up and grow a larger number of trees, enough for small production runs. It’s not a quick process, it will take 5 or 6 years before it starts producing apples. Chris who is in charge of the orchard explains that all the trees are grafted onto specific root stocks which will determine the growth required.

Chris explained how a new apple tree is grafted

Looking down the rows, some apples are still on the trees as they’ve not quite ripened, others have fallen on the ground. But nothing goes to waste, these are collected up as others are harvested. The trees are pruned very specifically to allow machines to do the harvesting and even shaking the trees to ensure all are collected.

The apples arrive for processing

The quantities of apples arriving is astonishing. In addition to apples harvested from Thatcher’s own 500 acres of orchards, they work closely with other suppliers across the south west to source the apples. The suppliers are incentivised to supply clean and ripe fruit.  Thatchers pride themselves in paying their suppliers a week following delivery.

We watch as some Thatchers apples are delivered to the bays. The trailer holds 7 tons of mixed apples. With four apples in each bottle of cider, imagine how many bottles that might fill. However, when you see the enormous trailers arrive from their suppliers which hold 25 tons of apples this amount is dwarfed. There will be 750 trucks delivering from 35 suppliers supplying a total of 35,000 tons over the harvesting period. The ripeness is tested on delivery.

A Dabinett cider apple?

Thatchers cider is made both from dessert apples and cider apples. For some ciders, single varieties are used. Others only dessert or cider apples or a mixture of the two. You might be wondering about the logistics of processing so many apples. The apples are indeed washed, mashed up and juiced as soon as possible after delivery, but then the resulting mixture is concentrated. Cider is then made from the concentrate throughout the year using yeast that is unique to Thatchers.

We watch the cider apples being washed and moved into the processing plant, simply by gravity.

Making cider

Understandably, we are unable to take pictures inside the processing plant. Suffice to say the scale and amount of equipment is jaw dropping. We pass a “spaghetti’ filter where the cloudy mixture is turned crystal clear. (Haze, the cloudy cider has some ‘cloudiness’ added back in). We turn into a new area where enormous containers are used for storage. This year’s crop has been especially good, so these are already filling up quickly.

cider tour thatchers

We then head off to marvel the oak vats where some of the cider is matured. These are 160 years old and 30 ft tall  and still going strong. Apparently the trick is to keep them filled with liquid to avoid drying out.

The state of the art canning line is located in this new building

Lastly we head over to the new canning line. As it is a weekend, it is not in use, but we see it in action on a video – the speed and scale again astonishing. More huge numbers, 57 million cans of cider are canned each year, and about half that amount bottled.

Cider Tasting

Of course, with all this attention to detail, the cider needs to be tasted. Each Friday at 12:30 precisely, the cider is tasted to ensure it has met peak perfection. It never leaves the mill without being tested first.

Our tour ended, we head off for a tasting session. I had previously particularly enjoyed the Katy cider  so was particularly keen to discover other ciders that would suit my palate. I wasn’t disappointed. I particularly enjoyed: Redstreak is made only from the cider apple of the same name. It has a slightly peppery taste and more of what you might call a ‘traditional’ cider flavour. Old Rascal also includes the Redstreak apple, with Dabinett (which we tried in the orchard) and Tremletts. It is medium dry. My third favourite is Rose, made with Katy Apples. This is high in alcohol and very drinkable. I’d have to pace myself with this one!

Are you and Old Rascal or more of a Redstreak or Rose drinker?

Lunch at the Railway Inn

We retired to the Railway Inn for a very fine lunch indeed. Head Chef Sam Coltman, has created one of the most tasty menus I have had at a pub in a long while, including cider in the recipes (of course) wherever possible. I shall be dreaming of my guinea fowl dish for a long time. It came with it’s own pie! The starters and desserts were as inventive and delicious mains.

2 thoughts on “Getting to the core of cider at Thatchers”

All good questions. I felt on the day that we were able to ask as many questions as we liked. We did walk through the production area, so didn’t think that anything was being hidden. Are you setting up a cider business?

I am sure you had a good day. Did you ask why you weren’t allowed to take pics of the processing plant? Did you ask if their end product is 100% cider or has any added water? Did you ask if they ever use foreign “concentrate”? Did you ask them how long their “cider” spends maturing? Everything may look big and shiny and the lunch enjoyable, but sometimes one needs to delve below the surface! The questions I ask could equally be asked of many other “cider” producers – I am not just singling them out!

Thatchers Cider

Myrtle Farm, BS25 5RA

Description

For more than a hundred years, family-run Thatchers Cider has been quietly perfecting the magic that turns apples into cider.

Here at Myrtle Farm in Sandford, each generation has passed on cider-making secrets, like encouraging bees to pollinate the apple blossom, or looking after the 150 year old oak vats where the cider matures.

We lovingly craft a range of ciders but whichever you choose, they have all been made with the same care and attention, and with the same hands-on experience – we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills , the Thatchers orchards are our pride and joy. With apples such as Dabinett, Somerset Redstreak and Porters Perfection, as well as some newer varieties such as Angela, Lizzie and Prince William, it’s here that the journey starts, inspired by the heritage and values of our company.

Our flagship brand Thatchers Gold is a full flavoured, medium dry Somerset cider, with a wonderfully rich, golden colour. Thatchers Vintage is well balanced and mature, with a distinctive depth of character, while Thatchers Haze is a premium cloudy cider that has a crisp, sweet finish. We have recently introduced a new cider to our range, the gloriously pink Rosé, bursting with fruity apple flavours.  Our other ciders include Thatchers Katy, Old Rascal and Green Goblin, together with our Stan’s Range of traditional ciders, such as Cheddar Valley, Trad. and Big Apple. Available on line and in our Cider Shop, Finally, holding down the fort at home, we have our award-winning Cider Barn range that’s exclusive to Myrtle Farm.that includes very special ciders such as Thatchers 458, Vilberie and Redstreak.

You can buy all our ciders online at www.thatcherscider.co.uk

Or visit our Cider Shop at Myrtle Farm. Here the shelves are packed with our ciders, alongside produce such as local cheeses and chutneys, and gifts including books and clothing. Our draught ciders are available straight from the barrel, so you can try before you buy.

Aldi Beats Thatchers In ‘Cloudy Cider’ Trademark Dispute In UK

cider tour thatchers

from the with-a-chance-of-meatballs dept

The last time we saw German-based grocer Aldi get into a trademark tiff over an alcohol product, it was with Brew Dog in the UK and it was one of the most good-natured trademark “disputes” on the record. While that whole thing was refreshing to see, not every company chooses to approach things in a human and awesome way.

Which brings us to Thatchers, based in Somerset, England. Thatchers makes a lemon cider product which it has very creatively named “cloudy lemon cider.” Aldi released its own lemon cider product, calling it “Taurus Cloudy Cider,” noting that it is lemon flavored on the packaging as well. Because of those names, and because the packaging for both products has base colors of lemon and green — because, you know, lemons — Thatchers took Aldi to court for trademark infringement .

Martin Thatcher, a fourth-generation cider maker at the family firm, said it was “compelled” to bring the case “as we were concerned that the packaging of international retailer Aldi’s product was misleading shoppers due to the strong resemblance to Thatchers Cloudy Lemon Cider”.

As you’ll see from the source article below, the product packaging indeed has similarities. That is due to the nature of the product, though. Beyond that, the name of both products, other than the brand names for them, are almost purely descriptive. You ought no more be able to trademark the term “cloudy lemon cider” than you should be able to trademark “hazy IPA.” And, though Aldi has stipulated that it built this product on the standard of Thatchers’ product, that doesn’t suddenly make any of this trademark infringement.

The courts, thankfully, agreed.

Judge Clarke said she was “satisfied on the balance of probabilities” that seeing the Aldi product “would call to mind” the Thatchers trademark, causing “a link in the mind of the average consumer”. But she concluded that Aldi had not infringed and was not liable for “passing off”, adding that the German supermarket’s product did not take unfair advantage of nor was “detrimental” to the reputation of the Thatchers trademark. Judge Clarke found that Aldi did not develop its product “with an intention to take advantage of the goodwill and reputation” of the Thatchers trademark, adding that she was satisfied “there is no misrepresentation that Aldi is connected in trade with Thatchers”.

That decision is as refreshing as a cloudy lemon cider on a hot summer day. I’m trying to imagine a ruling like this coming out of a United States court and it just doesn’t compute. It would be entirely too easy to note the similar product names, the color schemes in the packaging, and just start screaming infringement and call it a day.

Instead, the judge took the time to actually really think about whether customers were actually going to be confused here, given the larger context of the packaging, the products, and product names. Trademark law could use much more of this sort of thing.

Wait, a reasonable decision in a trademark dispute? What was she thinking? She will never gain high office this way.

cider tour thatchers

Big corp steals little corps idea

Americans applaud Ha ha four generations local business! But otherwise we’d have to come up with our own ideas!!

cider tour thatchers

Stealing ideas is called free market. Trademark law does not protect ideas but brands and reputations.

For protecting ideas, there is patent law. Patents don’t last four generations and really nothing intangible should.

If Aldi tries riding on their four generation local brand reputation, trademark law will slap Aldi’s fingers. If people are willing to pay for four generation local brand reputation, they will know where to get it.

If they aren’t willing to pay for that, it is not the business of the courts to make them so.

Intellectual property laws are intended to provide short-term monopoly rights to offset initial costs and needs that realistically need to be spread across consumers to get a business off the ground. They are not for permanent market distortions, even if corporations like to suggest otherwise.

cider tour thatchers

“Trademark law does not protect ideas but brands and reputations.”

Assessment of present conditions?

I thought trademark was intended to protect the consumer from fraudulent knockoff products/services.

cider tour thatchers

Re: Re: Re:

Consumers cannot initiate trademark suits, so they are not the principal beneficiary.

cider tour thatchers

Trademark protecting consumers from fraudulent products still doesn’t protect ideas, it protects the brands.

cider tour thatchers

Re: Re: intellectual property may be an unclear term

Intellectual property laws are intended to provide short-term monopoly rights to offset initial costs and needs

It depends. Copyrights and patents indeed are intended to provide a short term monopoly following which the material passes to the public.

Trademarks are different. They are used to designate origins of goods and services, and the companies providing goods and services may intend to be around nearly forever. That is why you cannot sell knock-off Coca-Cola under the trade-marked name. Neither can you call your burger joint McDonald’s, even if your burgers are better and your fries nearly as good.

Consumers benefit from being able to identify the sources of goods and services. If I want lousy fried chicken, I can feel confident in KFC. While I would get good chicken at Lee’s, the different name provides a warning so that I can avoid getting spoiled by good stuff. As a consumer I use those brand names to decide which vendor fills my belly.

There is no reason that after some term of years, someone else should be able to step in and sell me their version of Coke.

cider tour thatchers

One can say “the court made the right decision here” and still support Thatchers by buying some of its cider. Hell, if someone wants to stick it to Aldi, supporting Thatchers would be the best course of action.

cider tour thatchers

Hell, if someone wants to stick it to Aldi, supporting Thatchers would be the best course of action.

And trademark law is there to ensure that your money will go to the recipient you intended.

It’s not there to ensure that your money will go where Thatchers wants it.

cider tour thatchers

If they wanted to keep their trademark, they ahould have made it more distinctive. It looks like any number of lemonades and lemon iced teas if you ignore the words, and if you don’t ignore the words they aren’t really all that similar (maybe Aldi’s should have added “with” to “Lemon”, but that’s about it). Also:

AC was so close A wasted opportunity! Almost a haiku.

cider tour thatchers

All three of those sentences are pointless and stupid.

Run for office. People like content-free emotional blahblah.

cider tour thatchers

Which brings us to Thatchers, based in Somerset, England. Thatchers makes a lemon cider product which it has very creatively named “cloudy lemon cider.”

That’s got to be sarcasm because I would call that descriptive rather than creative. Bad Thatcher’s! No trademark for you.

Here are a couple of comments you can leave on the title “Aldi Beats Thatchers In ‘Cloudy Cider’ Trademark Dispute In UK”:

Shopper win? It’s interesting to see Aldi win this case. Does this mean more competition for cloudy lemon ciders? Trademark troubles are Not so clear-cut anymore! This makes me wonder what qualifies as trademark infringement.

You’re supposed to strip out the first sentence from the ChatGPT output before you post the spam.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's teaser trailer sure loves the 1990s

S traight up, there isn’t a frame of gameplay from Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 , in the official teaser trailer Treyarch and Activision released on Monday (Memorial Day, no less). It’s still a bananas, paranoid tour of the deep state, laced with all kinds of 1990s references for those who have great affection for that decade of peace and prosperity. I know I do; I graduated both high school and college that decade.

So, let’s see, we’ve got Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Al Gore, Dan Quayle, George Bush the elder, Saddam Hussein, Chia Pets, Professional Bull Riders (founded 1992, for the record), McMansions galore, and a fake Friends-style dramedy called “Frank’s Woods” which is plainly a reference to Black Ops’ founding protagonist . All we need from here is Blockbuster Video and your Mom bringing home a Pizza Hut Big New Yorker (a product conceived by f ormer Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime , by the way).

The Black Ops line of Call of Duty games have always gotten the showier marketing pieces over the years, mainly because everyone loves a good old-fashioned conspiracy theory. Though most folks buy Call of Duty for the multiplayer, and surely will for this game, the nostalgic touches and period references have always made Black Ops’ single-player campaigns worth a playthrough.

That’s why it was such a crime that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018) had no campaign. Treyarch, the lead developer of the sub-series, learned its lesson and came back with a proper campaign for 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, returning the series to the absolutely fabulous 1980s after two editions set in the future. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 therefore continues that storyline, just in a decade we haven’t yet explored.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6 was formally announced May 23 ; rumor and speculation for months had suggested Treyarch would take the game to the Gulf War era. The game will have a dedicated deep-dive livestream after the  Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024, starting at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST. The game’s release date has not yet been announced, but when it arrives, it will launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X - and, as reported by CharlieIntel , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
