Our tour guide Goksu and driver Yemas was outstanding! It exceeded our expectations from airport transportation to hotel accommodations and the whole tour were all excellent. Goksu is expert and passionate about his work. He indeed delivered all the classic highlights about his country.

Absolute Turkey

Fabulous affordable trip around Turkey with Gadventures. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and patient. The trip was busy but I would not change anything. Group meals are optional and usually not included but always great restaurants and local specialties were available. The home visit and overnight homestay were delightful. The hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia should not be missed. The boat trip and day on the Turkish riviera were fabulous. This was our first Gadventures trip but definitely not our last. The hotels are comfortable but not luxurious. Locations were always perfect! The 15 seater bus was not luxurious but perfect for the trip. Group size of 15 is great and instantly made 13 new friends.

Had a great time! The tour guide, Eray, was knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring a smooth journey. Although there were several commercial stops, they added an local flavor. The hotels were of good standard, and the sights, especially in Cappadocia, were breathtaking. A well-organized and memorable trip!

Very good Tour. Good guide good driver. Only criticisms is that a lot of the food was the same, and the last two hotels could've been closer to the sea where the amazing atmosphere was but we were half an hour walk away This would've made it the perfect holiday. Other than that it was great

Magic Carpet Tour

A fantastic experience of beautiful places in Turkey with Fez Travel. We were so lucky to find out that we had the tour as a "private" tour as we were the only guests that booked during the time we wanted to have it, yet Fez Travel didn't cancel the tour. The hotels for our stay during our tour were great, all breakfast were included ( all had a great selection of food ), and most dinners were included ( except a few days when we were in Istanbul). I'd like to mention 2 special people who made our tour so magical & enjoyable: Tamer ( our guide ) and Hakan ( our driver). They both looked after us so well. Tamer is a great tour guide, very knowledgeable, friendly & welcoming, and managed the itinerary & time very well, yet gave us some free time/ flexibility to explore on our own. I definitely recommend this 10 day Magic Carpet tour with Fez Travel to experience the amazing landscape of Turkey and the hospitality of its people. Erni

We had an incredible experience with Travel Talk on our 12-day Best of Turkey by Land tour! TravelTalk was super responsive with our many questions and Mustafa, our tour guide, was the best tour guide we could have asked for! We were a group of 6 - traveling with 4 parents and he took care of our entire family throughout the tour. We’re also vegetarian and he made sure at every meal that we had a delicious vegetarian spread. He answered our million questions with so much patience and kindness. He was definitely one of the best tour guides we’ve had and would highly recommend Mustafa and Traveltalk for your next tour of Turkey!

10 Days Turkey Escapades Tour Tour

10 Days Turkey Escapades Tour

We have just returned from this trip, please be aware that it isn't quite as advertised, we were expecting to be on a tour with up to 8 people where we travelled together start to finish. Instead we were attached to different groups each day and were transported between places either with one of the groups or individually. This felt rather disjointed at times and alot of time was spent sitting in mini vans outside tour company offices whilst they sorted out everyones transportation and which minivan was going where. This meant we were often waiting for others to join or for some travellers to move to other minivans to go onwards in a different direction. Another thing to be aware of is that on 3 of the days we were in large groups of between 12 and 15 people despite the fact the tour specifies maximum 8 people. The large group days were the least enjoyable as the tour guides were herding us all around and there was alot of waiting for others to catch up etc. Having said that the places we visited were really interesting and varied - Three of our guides were excellent, Ibrahim in Gallipoli, Troy and Pergamon, Azer in Ephesus and Yunus in Konya. We loved Turkey and would highly recommend a tour around this beautiful and fascinating country. The food we had on the tour was very good and the hotels varied but in the main were good with the one in Cappadocia being superb. The driver who took us from Pamukkale to Cappadocia (10 hour journey) was exceptional and his English was better than some of the tour guides we had. He made the journey interesting and fun and showed us things along the way that we wouldn't have otherwise seen. He went above and beyond - his name is Tuncay Ay.

What people love about Gallipoli Tours

We went on the 2024 ANZAC day Colonial Tour with Ege Ertas as our guide over 13 days. Türkiye far exceeded our expectations in the ancient sites we visited, the people we met and the delicious food we had daily. The knowledge that Ege imparted in each of the places we visited was very impressive. He has been the best tour guide we’ve experienced. Fez travel were very easy to work with and we look forward to returning to do another tour with them
Very good trip. The leader Engin was excellent and was at our Bec and call 24/7. I feel for his sanity he needs some nights off and just tell us about a few restaurants but not take us there - do his own thing. The whole group doesn’t need to always be together. We had one person that struggled to keep up with group and I felt some pressure to wait for her or help her- I don’t think she had much insight into the affect she was having on group. Otherwise was a great and diverse group.

Spiaggia della Purita beach in Gallipoli town

With its long stretches of sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of the Ionian coast, it’s no wonder that Gallipoli is so popular as a tourist destination. Although the city has some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy and these alone are reason enough to visit, the ‘cittá bella’ is actually so much more than the sea and relaxing by the beach. With its old island town, Greek influence, fascinating cathedral, and medieval castle, Gallipoli will astound you with its stunning beauty. A visit to Gallipoli is a must when in southern Puglia.

An enchanting coastal town rich in history, Gallipoli is a wonderful mix of Greek roots and Baroque and Renaissance architecture. On our Gallipoli tours you will walk through the alleyways of the old town, linked to the mainland by a 16th century bridge. You will be astonished by the courtyards and palazzi of what was once, back in the 17th century, one of the richest cities in southern Italy.

With over 80 canvases, the magnificent Cathedral of St Agatha is considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the whole of the Salento Peninsula. Gallipoli is also known for its traditional underground olive oil mills which are definitely worth a visit.

VISIT GALLIPOLI - WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Cathedral of st. agatha.

facade of St. Agaha Cathedral Gallipoli

Like most Puglian cathedrals, the Cathedral of St Agatha was originally built in the Puglian Romanesque style during the Norman Age in the 11th century. Six centuries later, the cathedral was restored and renovated in the typical Baroque style. There are many masterpieces and canvases housed in the church which you will be impressed by, including some by local artist Giovanni Andrea Coppola.

The interior is in a Latin cross plan with two magnificent Baroque altars dedicated to the main saints and protectors of the town: St Agatha and St Sebastian. The main facade is also extremely impressive; richly decorated in carparo, a local limestone, with statues of saints placed in small niches, the facade was made by another famous Puglian artist, Zimbalo.

Undreground olive oil mill - Gallipoli must see

For many years, Gallipoli played a fundamental role in the production and exportation of lamp oil in Puglia. This was an incredibly important resource of the land until the first half of the 19th century; the lamp oil was used as fuel for lights in many cities across northern Europe. However, the invention of petrol in 1850 drastically changed the industry.

With lamp oil then being an obsolete product, the local production turned its sight to olive oil for the gastronomic industry. As olive oil was not as profitable as lamp oil, after several decades of economic growth, the town experienced a downturn. When on one of our Gallipoli tours, do not miss the chance to visit the old underground olive oil mills from the 16th century, one of the most interesting sights in the town.

Castle of Gallipoli

Castle and fishermen port of Gallipoli

Because of its strategic position by the sea and its island location, Gallipoli has always been extremely difficult to besiege and occupy by enemies. This is the reason why the city remained under Byzantine rule for such a long time, until the Norman Age in the 11th century, unlike the rest of Puglia, which was partly taken over by other populations during the time of the Byzantines.

The fortress on the old island city was first built under the Byzantines and the Normans in the 11th century. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle was heavily restored and extended by the Angevines and the Aragonese, including the addition of a wall with a polygonal plan, fortified with cylindrical towers at the corners, and a lookout tower.

Nowadays, this fascinating castle overlooking the sea is open to visitors and is a popular tourist attraction. Numerous temporary exhibitions and cultural events are also held in the castle throughout the year, and during the summer the fifth tower is converted into a cinema.

Greek Fountain

Located just a short walk away from the castle is the Greek Fountain, thought to be the oldest fountain in Italy. Originally it was thought to have dated back to the third century BC, although more recently it has been said that it was more likely built during the Renaissance period; however, its exact date of origin still hasn’t been ascertained. Its facade will astound you with its amazing bas-reliefs, which depict the mythological metamorphosis of Dirce, Salmacis, and Byblis.

The harbour and city walls

fisherman making handmade woven fish traps

Being an island, the old city of Gallipoli offers beautiful views over the Ionian Sea. The town is an old fishermen’s village, and this heritage is still evident when you stroll around the town; everywhere you go, you will still see fishermen, and there is also a fish market. While on one of our Gallipoli tours you should take a walk along the city walls, originally built in the 14th century and then restored by the Spaniards in the 16th century, and enjoy the splendid views.

Also located within the old town, just below the city walls, is the beautiful beach Spiaggia della Puritá. If you’re into seafood, every morning there is a seafood market which is well worth a visit; it’s highly recommended that you try some raw seafood coupled with a glass of white wine.

Palazzo Pirelli

A stunning palace once belonging to the Pirelli family from the 16th century, the highlight of the Palazzo Pirelli is its fascinating vaulted ceiling of the entrance to the building. Festooned with exquisite decorations on a mythological theme, including a depiction of the goddess Minerva. Having stayed in the Pirelli family until the 18th century, it was then converted into a pharmacy.

Best beaches of Gallipoli

The beaches around Gallipoli are some of the most beautiful in Italy, and you certainly should visit at least one on your private Gallipoli tour. South of Gallipoli you will find Baia Verde, Punta Pizzo and Punta della Suina. If you travel towards Porto Cesareo, you will find Punta Prosciutto and Torre Lapillo.

Beautiful Puglia

Beautiful Puglia

Where your journey begins

Gallipoli, Puglia – Italy – A guide to visit it

Gallipoli in Puglia (Italy), the pearl of Salento , is well renowned for its impressive beaches and for the charming of its small-fortified historical city center. Its name derives from the original Greek name ‘Kalé polis’ meaning ‘beautiful city’ .

It is located in the west coast of Puglia , washed by the beautiful Ionian Sea and is one of the most visited places in region. The city is divided into two parts, the oldest and more historic and the other more modern, both separated by a 17th century bridge.

How to get to Gallipoli

By car: if you are coming from the North, you can take the A14 or A16 motorway towards Bari , follow the Bari-Lecce signs and then continue towards Gallipoli. If you coming from South, take the SS7 towards Brindisi and follow towards Lecce .

By train: you can get to Lecce and from there take a regional train to Gallipoli. The journey from Lecce to Gallipoli takes an hour and a half.

By plan: the closest airport to Gallipoli is the International Airport of Salento , located in Brindisi . Here you can take a shuttle service that leaves directly from the airport towards Lecce and then get to Gallipoli with bus line 108. Alternatively, you can rent a car

Things to See in Gallipoli

Historical city center.

The most essential thing to see in Gallipoli is its historic center. Tour it; lose yourself in its streets, its souvenir shops, its local gastronomy businesses, its craft workshops with products from the area.

The center is fortified and surrounded by ancient walls; you can access it by crossing the ancient bridge.

Aragonese Castle

One of the most iconic places to see in Gallipoli is its Aragonese castle, which was built in the middle of the Byzantine era. The structure has undergone several modifications over the years.

Today the castle has a square base with a tower at each angle, as well as a fifth circular tower, which is known as the Torre del Rivellino . If you like castles, you can visit the prisons and rooms and discover the transformation and uses of the fortress.

The cost of admission is €7, €4 for a reduced ticket for children between 6 and 14 years of age and for those over 65 years of age. Children under 6 years of age have free access.

As for the schedules, they vary depending on the time of year, here below the schedules for each month.

The Greco-Roman fountain

Our second stop is the Greco-Roman fountain , which according to some historians is the oldest fountain in Italy. Originally it was thought to date back to III century BC, later and after several studies, it has been determined that the creation of the fountain was later, specifically from the Renaissance period.

It is located at the beginning of the bridge that gives access to the old part of the city and has two different facades.

Cathedral of Santa Agata

The cathedral is the most important religious building in the city. It was built between 1629 and 1696 and is made in Leccese baroque style.

Admission to it is free and it is open at any time.

Church of Santa Maria della Purita

The Chiesa della Purità was built in the mid-1600s. Although it has one of the simplest facades, the interior is completely the opposite, as it is richly decorated with frescoes in every corner of it.

The church is managed by a fellowship made up of volunteers who open the doors of the temple “when they can”. That is why there are no set hours for visits.

We reveal you a secret: the canvas located in front of the altar can be lifted using a pneumatic mechanism. In fact, the canvas hides the frescoes of the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

Sanctuary of the Madonna del Canneto

It is very close to the Greco-Roman fountain and next to the port and dates back to the middle of the year 1600. Inside, it is possible to appreciate the representation of the Madonna del Canneto ; fishermen used to tell legends about her and her miraculous appearances.

Port of Gallipoli

The port is one of the places to see in Gallipoli . It is very beautiful, thanks to its waters, the boats and the Aragonese castle with the main background.

A must-visit for seafood lovers, we advise you to visit it when the fishermen return from their working day when you can see how the locals crowd to buy the best pieces.

Underground oil mill (Frantoio ipogeo)

Gallipoli was a truly rich city in the past, as it was one of the largest exporters of oil used to light the streets of European cities. There are still numerous mills, places where oil was extracted from olives.

Some of them are open to the public such as Frantoio di Palazzo Briganti (free entrance) and Frantoi di Palazzo Granafei . For more info visit the Associazione Gallipoli Nostra

Things to Do in Gallipoli

Watch the sunset at purità beach.

In the old part of Gallipoli there is a small bay with clear waters where you can take a dip and enjoy a beautiful sunset. It´s called Seno della Purità beach.

In addition to its clean and transparent waters, you can enjoy the location given that it is surrounded by the city wall, embedded between towers and bastions with a spectacular background.

After your swimming, climb up the town walls and sit outdoors to eat a seafood dinner at one of the restaurants overlooking this harbor as night falls, certainly the perfect ending to an enjoyable day in Gallipoli.

Try the scapece gallipolina

This dish’s origins lie in its name – Gallipoli . The scapece dates back to medieval times when the town came under siege by various Mediterranean authorities. Inhabitants of Gallipoli took refuge behind the city walls and therefore needed to find ways to prolong the life of some foods.

Scapece involves layering small fish with vinegar, breadcrumbs and saffron, which is left to marinade.

Relax in the paradise of Baia Verde

If you like beaches with crystal clear waters, about three kilometers from the city is one of the best beaches on the entire Jonian coast, considered one of the best beaches in Puglia.

Have an aperitif of raw fish

We already know that the gastronomy in Puglia is exceptional and we recommend that you do not leave Puglia without trying some of the typical dishes .

However, if you are a lover of fish and shellfish, you are in one of the best cities in Puglia with the highest quality and quantity of both.

Gallipoli is the perfect place to try raw fish: mussels, squid, red and purple prawns, sea urchins, oysters. You have a wide choice and remember that it must be all raw.

When you enter the historic center of the city, through the bridge, you will see several small stalls on your right, with the appearance of a fish market. This place is actually a market-restaurant area with very fresh seafood, all freshly brought from the high seas!

Walk along the city walls

Simply touring the walls is one of the best plans you can have in Gallipoli. Admiring the life of the locals, enjoying a brutal landscape and getting to know another important part of the city. Stop at various bars and restaurants and try exquisite dishes while enjoying the surroundings

Have fun in Gallipoli

Fun is always guaranteed in Gallipoli, the day can be enjoyed on the beach, along with activities such as spas, natural reserves and water sports.

At night the city offers also an amazing nightlife. Many discos and nightclubs are within the city or just outside. The evening usually starts as early as in the late afternoon on the beach where you can enjoy the aperitivo and drink a cocktail on the beach listening to music.

Near Gallipoli

Gallipoli is one of the most popular coastal destinations in all of Salento thanks to its splendid sea. It is not very difficult to find beautiful little beaches outside of Gallipoli, in fact, just outside of the city perimeter there are some nice and quiet ones.

The beaches of Gallipoli need no introduction, but we recommend a visit to the beaches of Baia Verde and Punta della Suina , two of the most beautiful beaches in Puglia.

Among the closest cities and place to vist we highlight Lecce , Otranto , Porto Cesareo , Porto Selvaggio and Santa Maria di Leuca

Here are 5 of the best tours and activities you can do in Gallipoli, Puglia:
