This morning you’ll get to paint your own mug or teacup which will be fired and sent to you to take home as a unique and very special souvenir. There will be time to buy lunch if you wish, before you continue to Kanchanaburi to visit to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. Many Allied prisoners of war and conscripted Asian labourers were engaged here to help build a rail route to Myanmar (Burma), including the passage infamously known as Hellfire Pass. Visit the memorial museum of the pass where your leader will provide more information about this chapter in history. Take a historical train journey across a portion of this 'death railway' along the Kwai Noi River and travel over the original wooden viaduct, known as the Krasae Bridge, constructed by the allied POWs. Pass through peaceful and naturally beautiful scenery as you learn of those who lost their lives building this rail route. The evening is yours to explore the town.

Surprise Cave is accessed via staircases but the pathways inside can be a little uneven and slippery, so good walking shoes or sandals will be useful. Swimming in the bay from the boats is banned by the local authority.

Your junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with en suite facilities and air-conditioning. Due to the limited cabins on board, the single supplement is excluded, and accommodation will be on a twin-share basis.

Local authorities permit a limited number of boats to stay overnight in Halong Bay. To ensure all travellers can be accommodated on board available boats, on rare occasions you will stay on a larger boat (with up to 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or your group may be split across different vessels, in which case a group leader will be present on each boat. The route taken and inclusions on board will be the same.

Start your day with a peaceful breakfast and perhaps take part in some Tai Chi on board the boat before returning to Hanoi. This afternoon you’ll take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience and sit down to a soul-stirring traditional Hat Xam performance. Hat Xam is an art form of Northern Vietnam dating back to the Tran Dynasty. Originally, this was performed by blind performers, and was enjoyed by local working-class audiences, right up until the late 1950s, when a wave of communism deemed all art forms to be corrupting influences. Today these performances are rare, but you and your group will be taken to a private club house and treated to an exclusive performance in one of the few places where artists still sing acoustically. The performance takes around 60 minutes, and includes possible interaction with guests, so be ready to get involved!

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, hanoi – touching down in vietnam.

When you touch down in Hanoi, a plane makes a lighthearted introduction as the remains of a MIG jet fighter strewn beyond the runway is one of the first things you will see. As you venture into Hanoi with your local guide, the narrative goes far beyondjust period in history as rice noodles simmer on fragrant market-stalls, elegant architecture speaks of a much older past, and Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a great place to soak your senses into what the city is all about. Nothing specific is planned for the day, so you can see how you feel upon arrival your guide will be able to customize your plans accordingly.

What's Included:

Hanoi – Locals and Legends of Hanoi

Motorcycles beep their way past as locals perform tai chi around Hoan Kiem Lake. Cafe terraces peer out onto everyday life as you enjoy diving into a deeper exploration of Hanoi with a journey into its quirks as presented by the locals. Listen to stories from local traders, take a walk down Soviet lanes, and then share a bowl of pho with a decorated Vietnamese fighter pilot. These local encounters help to narrate a county’s history that is often misunderstood and gives you insight into a city that is proud to protect its tradition. Of course, along the way, you will see places as well, like temples and pagodas, parks and places where the history was written.

Halong Bay – Sailing the Bay of the Descending Dragon

The world called it a new seven wonder, but the locals call it the Bay of the Descending Dragon. You probably know it as Halong Bay, and it is a place that never looks real as a face of limestone teeth rises from the ocean with so many jagged peaks and islands. Most mornings these emerge from the mist, an iconic experience as you spend two nights on a luxury houseboat. You will cruise around and travel through the karst landscape as the panoramas seem to keep stretching forever. Disembark at caves and descend into a murky underworld. You can kayak, or take a tender boat, to small sandy islands and drift past floating villages.

One day of cruising gives you a sense of the landscape, but two days allows you to fully explore as Halong Bay stretches for many hundreds of square miles. After the flight to Vietnam and the continual impressions of Hanoi, Halong Bay is also a place where you can unwind and ensure that you are rested for the journey that is yet to come. Sit back on the deck as sunset colors bounce off the limestone. Take breakfast on the deck, your boat enjoying solitude between the karst peaks. Stand outside and feel the wind past your ears as you travel by wind power, the houseboat using both sail and motor to travel around.

Hue – Imperial Histories and Regal Tastes

Hue really suffered during the war with the imperial capital decimated during the Tet Offensive. However, it has since been revitalized, and the city has retained the grace of a past era. After the drive back to Hanoi you will fly south to Hue, and have some time to explore the city at leisure.  Hue is a good place to form your own impressions before your local guide takes you into the rich history. The late afternoon is when the city really comes alive, and that is when you can go walking with your local guide to see the remains of a time before war and buildings that have risen from the ashes.

Hue – Tombs, Pagodas and the Tet Offensive

Along the Perfume River you will travel with stops to admire the tombs of Tu Duc and Khai Dinh, with such elegance in their design. At a small pagoda, you can meet local monks and spend time discussing the country’s past and present. You will then see what has been left behind in what used to be known as the Forbidden Purple City, and there will be the chance to see where the battle-lines were drawn during the war. Hue is a changing city, and there is beauty to be found in places where you may not expect it, particularly as Hue makes its own transition into the 21st century.

Hoi An – Emerald Landscapes and Waterside Bliss

Vietnamese landscapes often appear as if from a dream, and now your eyes can drink in a patchwork of rice paddies and villages above the South China Sea. The drive from Hue to Hoi An is perhaps the most impressive of any in the country, especially as you are able to traverse Hai Van Pass which is generally closed to traffic. Stop at villages and a lagoon on route, and then enjoy a local seafood lunch before rolling into Hoi An, the country’s cutest city. Fully protected as a World Heritage Site, the old city center is the perfect place for strolling at leisure. Stop on the cafe terraces, explore the shops, take a look in the market and go down to the waterfront, where your hotel is perched amid the history.

Wake the next day and go around with your local guide, and once again it is the people that best tell Vietnam’s story. There is an option to travel by bicycle as well, which can take you out along the city’s surrounding fields and canals, where basket boats and bamboo furniture are part of the experience. As part of these two days, expect to try plenty of Vietnamese coffee, savor some of the country’s best local delicacies, and meet the people that make Hoi An tick—the chess players and the craftsman, the antique restorers and the carpenters, artists and chefs.

Bangkok – City Colors and Cultural Idiosyncrasies

Flying away from Vietnam you will soon touch down in Southeast Asia’s bustling hub, Bangkok. Bangkok is full of hidden charm and redolent scenes, and the streets are very different to those of Hue. Tuk-tuks honk, lights flash and people rush by, yet beneath what initially feels like chaos is a world of local sights and flavors. Like Hoi An, late-afternoon to evening is the best time to soak your senses into what is happening. Set out on a private orientation tour, starting in the oldest parts of the city and then driving past the illuminated Grand Palace to Ratchadamnoen Avenue. Sit down at a famous Bangkok restaurant and look out on the city, stroll the flower market and listen to the excited chatter that overflows from the stalls. Return to your hotel along the river, lights flashing all around before they subside and the silence of your riverside hotel takes over.

Bangkok – Floating Markets and Stunning Sights

Including both the famous and the unknown, today’s tour will sink your senses into the metropolis. Join monks at Wat Saket, listening to their soft changing as incense spills into the air. Give alms before admiring the temple’s gold-gilded monuments and checking out the view. With a drive through old Bangkok, you can stop at hidden temples and Wat Ratchabophit before visiting an old Taoist temple where the Chinese community comes to pray. Later on, you will see the Grand Palace before heading out of the city to a floating market, where flowers fill the boats and that telltale sound of nattering traders fills the air.

Ayutthaya – Cruising Through Rural Thailand

Move next into rural Thailand, a houseboat taking you away from the bustle of Bangkok. The cityscape gives way to rolling countryside, skyscrapers disappear and are replaced by teak houses, temples rise on the riverbank as vestiges to the past. Stop at the Temple of Dawn, explore the royal boat collection at a large museum, and watch life unfold along the riverbank as you drift up the river towards Ayutthaya. Villagers wash and play in the river, children wave as you pass, and you simply drift on by. The houseboat docks outside Wat Bang Na temple, and your dinner is served on the deck, surrounded by sunset and a sense of history.

Ayutthaya – Amid the Ancient Siam Capital

Ayutthaya dates back to 1350 but has mostly been abandoned since the 18thcentury, when war with Burma meant it was no longer Thailand’s capital. The ancient temples are ready to be explored today, but only after you meet with the monks of Wat Bang Na for a blessing to future journeys. Many of the temples have been carefully restored, and it is easy to lose yourself in all the details, although some prefer the handful of temples still left in a state of ruin. Relive ancient history with your guide, and then spend the night back on board, the boat moored beside another temple, Wat Niwet Thammaprawat. Dinner is a regal affair, including many of the dishes from Ayutthaya’s time.

Khao Yai – Buddhist Temples and Thai Vineyards

There is plenty of time to explore more temples this morning, beginning with Niwet Thammaprawat, which was inspired by European Gothic styles. The royal mansions at Bang Pa-In palace blend European, Chinese and Thai influence, and you will enjoy them all. Traveling onwards, you will find one of Thailand’s lesser-known stories, its vineyards. These are the country’s best, and you will wander the vines, before tasting with sweeping views towards Khao Yai, today’s final destination. At a lodge amid the trees you hear monkeys and gibbons, perhaps even spot them swinging past. Hornbills bellow while the call of crickets swings into the night. The next two nights are spent in a quiet lodge on the edge of the national park, surrounded by a part of Thailand very different to what you’ve experienced before.

Khao Yai – A Day in Khao Yai National Park

Rounded prints suggest elephants wandered past as gibbons call from high in the treetops, their shout echoing between the trees. Other primates are here, shouting and sending their messages into the wild. Take a walk through the forest in search of the wildlife before continuing by car through the park, Heaw Suwat Waterfall a place for a picnic with a view. The park’s second highest peak can also be reached by road, and it provides a view that seems to stretch all the way to Bangkok. Later in the afternoon, you will be back at the lodge to enjoy the spa, and then after dinner, finish with a visit to a salt lick to watch and wait for the wild elephants to wander by playfully.

Bangkok – Departure

Coming out of the park, beneath the calls of monkeys, you will return to Thailand’s main roads and transfer to Bangkok. You will be dropped at the international airport for your homebound flight, taking back memories of the best of Thailand and Vietnam.

Detailed Description

The history of Thailand or Vietnam is alive along dusty temple-laden streets, celebrated in bustling marketplaces and something you have to see to believe. The stories are told by the places you visit and the people you meet, as these countries both conjure so many images, both good and bad, authentic and misunderstood. On this best-of itinerary, you go behind the preconceptions and live out what these countries are all about, a jigsaw puzzle of cultural connections, redolent heritage, surreal landscapes, and many faces rolled into one. You will travel from Hanoi through Vietnam to Hoi An, then onwards to Bangkok and an exploration of the cultural landscape north of the city.

Four World Heritage Sites mark your journey from North Vietnam to South Vietnam. While this is now a unified country, you will pick up on the contrasts as you follow the rice paddies and rivers south. Wander the streets of Hanoi and meet the locals who help you make sense of past and future. Luxuriate in the natural wonder of Halong Bay as a two-night cruise places you in the heart of a world seven wonder. Discover the imperial legacy of Hue, which rises on both sides of the Perfume River, and then settle into the charm of Hoi An, where so much is hidden along the mazy central streets.

While these four destinations provide a relatively standard route through Vietnam, you will find that the little details make all the difference. Local guides illuminate beyond the storybook tales and the people you meet narrate first-hand experiences on everything from the war to cuisine. You will cross a mountain pass between Hue and Hoi An that is generally closed to the public, you will travel in style when on the water and stay in handpicked boutique hotels on land. Move into Thailand, and your insider guides know how to bring dazzling old temples back to life, as they help you navigate traditional marketplaces. Tours run at your pace and are always private, the pace and direction adjustable on a daily basis.

Fly into Bangkok and spend a couple of days making sense of the cultural idiosyncrasies as the city opens its doors with a flurry of temples, Buddha images, and streets that can baffle the imagination. Visit the famous sights, like the floating market and the Grand Palace. But also look beyond the icons and spend time relaxing along the banks of the river. Set off on a second two-night cruise, this one going upriver through the villages to Ayutthaya, the grand old Thai capital. Meet with monks, get lost in the 14th-century history, and then complete your vacation in Khao Yai, a national park with elephants, gibbons, and supreme mountain summits. Your time will pass quickly as there’s a huge amount to see and get in, yet there’s something restful on each day of the journey.

This experience goes beyond traditional elephant riding and instead focuses on meaningful interactions.

Your day begins with a private tour guide meeting you at your hotel around 8:00 am. From there, you'll embark on a journey to the park, which takes approximately one and a half hours. Upon arrival, you'll change into provided uniforms and participate in an informative introductory discussion before engaging in the activities.

Interact with the elephants in a respectful manner, feed them, walk alongside them, embrace their gentle presence, and even have the chance to bathe these remarkable beings. After an enriching morning, savor a delicious lunch at the park. Your private guide and driver will then transport you back to your hotel around 2:00 pm.

Cooking Classes Experience: Embark on a culinary adventure in the serene countryside, just 9 kilometers (6 miles) east of Chiang Mai, at the Baan Hong Nual School. Thai cuisine's subtle flavors and unique presentation have gained worldwide acclaim. In this immersive program, you'll uncover the secrets of Thai cooking and master the art of crafting traditional Thai dishes.

The four-dish course encompasses a delightful selection of soups, salads, curries, satay, and desserts. You'll learn the techniques of stir-frying, steaming, and the art of serving food the Thai way. These newfound culinary skills will leave you well-prepared to impress your loved ones upon your return.

Evening at Doi Suthep: Chiang Mai's Sacred Sanctuary. Just a short drive from Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is a captivating national park in northern Thailand. Here, nature's beauty shines with lush landscapes, serene waterfalls, and panoramic vistas. The park also houses the renowned Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, a spiritual gem constructed in 1382.

Doi Suthep beckons outdoor enthusiasts with activities like hiking and cycling. From the temple's hilltop perch, you'll enjoy sweeping views of Chiang Mai, particularly enchanting at twilight. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep holds deep significance in Buddhism, attracting Thai pilgrims, especially during Makha Bucha and Visakha Bucha (in February and May).

Our tour offers an exclusive experience, taking place in the tranquil late afternoon when crowds thin out. You'll have the privilege of exploring Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, where resident monks' soothing chants accompany the glittering lights of Chiang Mai below. Meditation at the temple is also an option for those seeking a deeper connection. This evening excursion promises spiritual enrichment amidst northern Thailand's cultural treasures.

Doi Inthanon National Park: Nature, Culture, and Adventure. Explore Doi Inthanon National Park's natural and cultural wonders as you journey through stunning landscapes. Visit pagodas dedicated to the King and Queen with breathtaking mountain views. Immerse yourself in a Karen hill tribe village and explore the Hill Tribe Market.

Experience adventure on the Kiew Mae Pan Nature Trail, a 3-kilometer trek through lush forests with stunning Rhododendrons, waterfalls, and streams. Enjoy mountain panoramas at the trail's end.

For a unique perspective, take the Mae Klang Luang Nature Trail downhill, passing the Pa Dok Siew Waterfall. Explore the Mae Klang Luang Karen village with coffee bushes and rice paddies. Don't miss trying freshly roasted coffee at a local coffee house. This day offers nature, culture, and adventure in Doi Inthanon National Park.

Our first stop is Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple), one of Krabi's most stunning temples. Explore its limestone caves with mesmerizing stalagmites and stalactites. The temple's surroundings are graced with lush trees and a golden pagoda atop a mountain, reached by climbing over 1,000 steps.

Next, we'll visit the Hot Spring, where you can experience natural relaxation by immersing yourself in the warm stream. These hot springs are renowned for their high temperature (38-42°C) and mineral-rich waters, perfect for a soothing hydrotherapy bath.

Our final destination is the enchanting Emerald Lagoon. Nestled in a shaded, forested area, the lagoon's water changes color throughout the day. Dive into the crystal-clear, green waters of this 1.2-meter deep lagoon for a refreshing swim.

Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest: Begin your adventure in the famed Alas Kedaton, home to Bali's cheekiest inhabitants - the macaque monkeys. Wander among towering nutmeg trees, sacred to the Balinese people, and get up close and personal with these playful creatures. A visit to Bali is incomplete without witnessing their antics.

Pura Taman Ayung (Royal Temple): Our next stop takes us to Mengwi, where you'll explore the majestic Pura Taman Ayung, a 17th-century Royal Temple. Admire its architectural splendor and soak in the serene atmosphere of one of Bali's most beautiful temples.

Tanah Lot Temple at Sunset: As the day draws to a close, we'll take you to the iconic Tanah Lot Temple, perched dramatically on a rock just off the shore. This temple is not only a marvel of Balinese architecture but also a photographer's dream, especially during sunset when the surroundings take on a surreal glow. Textexaam.

Kelingking Beach: Our adventure kicks off at Kelingking Beach, one of Indonesia's most captivating natural wonders. Despite its name translating to "pinkie finger," this renowned viewpoint is famous for its uncanny resemblance to a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Stand atop steep cliffs and gaze at the imposing rock formation, which extends into the ocean, cradling a pristine white sand beach.

Broken Beach: Our next stop is Broken Beach, locally known as Pantai Pasih Uug. This unique destination boasts a naturally formed lagoon—a circular hole nestled within rocky cliffs, seemingly enclosed from all sides. Enjoy a refreshing coconut drink from a nearby stall and marvel at this natural spectacle as clear waters flow in from the surrounding ocean.

Angel's Billabong: From the towering heights of Broken Beach and Kelingking Beach, venture closer to the water at Angel's Billabong. This natural "infinity pool" is a serene lagoon framed by rugged volcanic rocks. The crystal-clear water allows you to observe intricate rock formations on the pool's floor.

Crystal Bay Beach: After an exploration-filled morning, savor lunch at a local restaurant before making your way to Crystal Bay Beach. Dive into the tranquil and pristine waters of this picturesque beach, teeming with exotic marine life. A thriving coral reef awaits not far from the shore, making it the perfect spot to rent snorkeling gear and explore underwater wonders. Whether you're swimming, diving, or simply relaxing under the shade of a swaying coconut tree, you'll find plenty of friendly "warungs" (local shops and eateries) offering snacks and cold drinks.

  • Pass Ba Đình Square, where Ho Chi Minh—the revolutionary leader and president of North Vietnam—read the Proclamation of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
  • Wander through the 11th-century Temple of Literature, a walled complex that’s dedicated to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and was the site of Vietnam’s first university.
  • Visit the site of Hỏa Lò Prison—sarcastically nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton” by American detainees—where the late U.S. Senator and presidential contender John McCain was held as a POW for more than five years during the Vietnam War.
  • Tour the museum that occupies the remaining prison structure, and learn about POWs’ harrowing experiences in captivity.
  • Board a bicycle rickshaw and ride through the busy Old Quarter, an area that’s rich with Vietnamese architecture, green spaces, locally owned shops, and street food vendors.
  • Pass Đồng Xuân Market (one of the largest wholesale markets in the north of Vietnam), the Hanoi Opera House (built in the early 1900s by a pair of French architects), and Hoàn Kiếm Lake (its name, which translates to Lake of the Restored Sword, derives from a legend that was set there).

A Day in Ninh Bình

From $115 per person

Transfer to Ha Long Bay and embark on a luxurious, overnight cruise aboard a small ship. As you explore this striking setting and UNESCO World Heritage site by boat, you’ll pass by many of its nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets, most of which are uninhabited and unaffected by human presence.

  • Once on board the ship, enjoy a welcome drink, followed by an included lunch served with beer or wine.
  • Cruise past notable natural features, including Fighting Cocks Islet, Thien Cung Cave, and Dau Go Cave.
  • Climb aboard a small tender with a guide from your ship and motor across the water to Sung Sot Cave—the largest and, according to many, most beautiful cave in the bay.
  • Get back on board your tender for a ride to your next stop, Tung San Pearl Farm, where you’ll learn how pearls are grown using traditional Vietnamese methods and new Japanese technology.
  • After visiting the pearl farm, if you’d like, paddle a kayak along the waters of Ha Long Bay to enjoy up-close views of the water and scenery.
  • Return to your ship to enjoy a Vietnamese cooking demonstration, then sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Join a sunrise lesson in Tai Chi—a gentle form of exercise that originated in China as a martial art—on the ship this morning, if you’d like. Then, hop into a small boat and make your way to Ti Top Island for time spent swimming or hiking to the top of the island to enjoy stunning views of Hạ Long Bay.

After enjoying an included lunch, disembark your cruise ship later this morning and board a flight to Ho Chi Minh City.

Join your Tour Director this morning for a guided exploration of Vietnam’s largest city, formerly known as Saigon. There’s much to discover in the city, including museums that detail its wartime past, as well as French colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and ornate temples.

  • Witness Vietnam’s progression from French colony to unified, independent nation as you enter the Reunification Palace, which was once the seat of South Vietnam’s government.
  • Make your way to the French Colonial district, stopping en route to view architectural highlights including the General Post Office, City Hall, and Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica.
  • Wander among popular Bến Thành Market’s 1,500 stalls, whose vendors sell everything from food to cosmetics, and stroll along Lê Công Kiều, a street known for its treasure trove of antiques.
  • Take a self-guided tour of the War Remnants Museum to get the local perspective on the Vietnam War.

Spend the afternoon learning more about the history and impact of the Vietnam War.

  • Travel by coach to the Củ Chi Tunnels, then join a local guide for a tour of the vast underground network built and used by Viet Cong guerrilla troops to transport supplies and communications, house soldiers, and mount surprise attacks against American and South Vietnamese forces.
  • See secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas, and meeting rooms.

Please note: Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of each tunnel before entering. Those preferring to remain above ground will have ample opportunity to view excavated areas. Good walking shoes and sun protection are recommended, as are clothes that can get slightly dirty.

Welcome to Southeast Asia

Marvel at the rich tapestry of Southeast Asia... it's ancient temples, palaces, and picturesque villages... shrouded by the mists of time and the impenetrable rainforests. From the patchworks of rice paddies to ethereal mountains and colonial cities... these lands entice with understated beauty.

Discovering the incredible legacies of civilizations past in cambodia.

One of Cambodia's greatest treasures, the fabled archaeological site at Angkor covers an area twice the size of New York's Manhattan Island! This UNESCO World Heritage Site – which you'll visit on your Cambodian travels with Tauck – contains hundreds of temples and palaces built by the Khmer people between the 9th and 15th centuries, all shrouded by jungle until the 19th century. Its wonders include the vast, 12th-century Angkor Wat temple, a significant religious center through the ages, with walls covered by inspiring bas-reliefs and devatas (guardian spirits); the walled city of Angkor Thom, home to the richly decorated Bayon Temple and the Elephant Terrace; and fascinating Ta Prohm Temple, originally a Buddhist university and monastery, now enveloped by centuries-old jungle roots and vines, and virtually a part of the dense rainforest that surrounds it.

A land of contrasts with a history of conflicts and strong cultural traditions... experience today's Vietnam with Tauck

Currently experiencing a period of peace and stability after decades of colonialism and conflict, Vietnam is a nation of contrasts, with a long and often turbulent history, and strong cultural traditions that have endured for centuries. Exploring today's Vietnam with Tauck – both in the countryside and in cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), Hué, Da Nang and Hoi An – you'll discover poignant reminders of war, like the Cu Chi Tunnels and the notorious Hoa Lo Prison… witness the legacy of peace as you visit a kindergarten in Da Nang… enjoy an enchanting water puppet performance, an art form unique to Vietnam and popular since the 18th century... and experience life along the country's historic waterways on an overnight cruise among the limestone islets of Vietnam's majestic Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known in local legend as the "Bay of the Descending Dragons."

Thailand is an intriguing mix of the ancient and the modern, the futuristically urban and the traditionally rural, the dizzying whirl of contemporary life and the tranquility of the ages… all of which you'll experience when you visit with Tauck. Nowhere are these contrasts more evident than in the remarkable capital city, Bangkok… home to some of the most stunningly modern architecture in the world… centuries-old palaces and temples sheltering Buddhas from Emerald to Giant to Reclining… and the klongs, the bustling canals where much of the city's daily life takes place. Elsewhere, in countryside villages outside the city of Chiang Mai, the people of the region's rural hill tribes observe traditional ways of life; each has its own language, customs and crafts, and is happy to share them with visitors like you.

The question is, are you comfortable traveling alone to somewhere unknown to you?

There are 190+ countries on this planet to explore, each with it's interesting points and it's low points. While I understand the comfort aspect of traveling in a place you are familiar with, you miss the opportunity to understand the world on a more global basis.

It will give you a taste of the country.

Thailand is much easier in most ways, some say too easy nowadays for anyone wanting a bit of adventure.

Vietnam is heading that way now. Over the last 20 years it's tourist scene has been upgraded and often matches Thailand, but often at less cost. Many now prefer Da Nang or Nha Trang over Phuket or Samui.

I find Vietnam a bit more of a challenge than Thailand, but it's still pretty easy.

Why stick to one country when there's so much more to explore. Don't forget about Lao, Cambodia and Malaysia, all reachable overland from Thailand.

I like Thailand , am also here for the second time. I also like Indonesia although they smoke a lot there as well and I don't like the food as much as in Thailand and Vietnam. I was in Sri Lanka for the first time this year and also liked that country.

It is a cheaper county to visit, however less developed than Thailand generally

If beaches are your main interest/priority, I wouldn't recommend Vietnam as a beach destination however, Thailand is far better

I've had two 3 week visits to Vietnam during my 2019 and 2020 annual SE Asian trips, and going back for another 3 weeks in Jan 2025.

Depends when you are going. If March and April l would choose Vietnam. Culture and food are a lot different from Thailand . If you think there are a lot of motorbikes in Thailand, then you have not been to Vietnam.

I agree about the beaches.

Costs not that much difference if you avoid the touristy spots in Thailand.

I would try other countries. Thailand is too developed and too many tourists now, especially in February.

Cambodia 's Angkor Wat Temple is also calling to be explored, just like Phnom Penh's art deco-inspired Central Market. Vietnam trip will offer you a piece of history at the Ho Chi Minh City Cu Chi Tunnels and at the Vietnamese War museums. Read here the best 2 week Thailand itineraries .

What people love about Thailand, Cambodia And Vietnam Tours

This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!
Everything worked as planned. Great tour and amazing guides
The ceo was very well organised and efficient making the tour run smoothly despite the very intense itinerary. Majority of the group getting stomach bug/ food poisoning was very unfortunate, but not the CEO’s fault, however avoiding that would’ve made the experience even better.
