Our Guide to the Green Stays of Peru
Across the globe, green stays are fast becoming a top travel trend. More travelers are now seeking out eco-friendly travel, the kind of vacations that have a positive impact on the planet and its people.
At Aracari this is nothing new to us. For over two decades our team of travel experts has connected clients to the best eco-friendly tourism in Peru, Bolivia, and the Galapagos. Having always put a huge emphasis on ensuring that the trips we offer truly are a greener way to travel.
However, we also know that the buck doesn’t stop with us. Gaging just how sustainable a trip is, can be difficult to decipher. It goes beyond Aracari’s sustainability pledge and forces us to look closer at what our partners are doing – whether that’s a hotel or a hike operator.
A Guide to the Green Stays of Peru
That’s where our Report The Green Stays of Peru comes in. Published just this month, in March 2022, it compiles everything you need to make an informed choice on where, and with whom, you want to spend your money when you travel with Aracari.
Taking our team the best part of a year to produce, it outlines incredible stories of sustainability, from initiatives to preserve ancient cultures, to projects helping protect endangered wildlife.
We’re proud to have gone beyond certifications and accolades, probing deeper into what businesses are doing to ensure that decades from now, precious countries, cultures, and communities can be enjoyed by the next generation of explorers.
Your next eco-friendly trip: our top 5 green stays
But before you delve into the complete guide, we’ve curated an exclusive highlight list. These are the pinnacle of eco-friendly travel, green stays that offer guests not only an enriching experience of their own but the opportunity to enrich the places and people they visit too.
It’s these powerful exchanges that have pushed the following partners to the top of our list. A real showcase of sustainability, and all deserving destinations for your next green trip…
Explora has several luxury hotels across South America, including one of our most recommend properties in the Sacred Valley, “ Explora Valle Sagrado “. Since their inception, deep-rooted principles of sustainability and conservation have shaped their identity as one of the best eco-friendly travel providers in the region.
Their recent B Corp Certification testifies to their genuine commitment to sustainability. ‘It is never a marketing strategy, but a resounding pledge to our people and planet,’ explains Sustainability Manager, Juan Marambio, ‘we take extraordinary care to be responsible and have a positive impact.’
Explora also plays a huge role in supporting the local economies near to their properties. From purchasing locally grown goods to promoting youth education and strengthening local culture and heritage – Explora has an acute awareness of how critical it is to foster positive relationships with the surrounding population pockets.
Aracari is proud to have partnered with Explora for many years now, and it’s this relationship that results in a selection of green stays exclusively available to our guests. For 2022, Explora has put together a package whereby Aracari travelers can visit their hotels on a half-board basis – as opposed to all-inclusive – a dining experience that includes the cuisine of world-renowned Peruvian chef, Virgilio Martínez. Just one example of the privileged access afforded to Aracari.
2. El Albergue
El Albergue is a historic hotel, in the town of Ollantaytambo, located around an hour from Machu Picchu and the city of Cusco by train. It’s a property with longstanding ties to Aracari, having been one of our most recommended properties in the region since 1997. And in its nearly 50-year history, El Albergue has made incredible strides in sustainable and eco-friendly travel.
In their pursuit of organic and natural produce, the team created their own onsite farm. Today, the kitchen and menu are made up exclusively of produce only grown in the Cusco region. The farm and gardens also play an important role in the experiences on offer to guests, including one that featured in our very own 2022 Travel Hotlist – the chance to brew your own traditional Peruvian spirit.
Beyond the El Albergue grounds, their commitment to eco-friendly tourism continues. For over a decade, the team has been a strong supporter of ECOAN, donating money and volunteering support towards reforestation programs in the nearby highlands.
‘I believe now is not the time to abandon tourism entirely but rather to rethink tourism,’ explains Joaquin Randall, El Albergue owner. ‘To pursue travel to strengthen our communities, environments, and the core values that unite us as a human species,’ a premise completely aligned to the Aracari ethos.
3. Rainforest Expeditions
As pioneers of eco-friendly tourism in the region, the sustainability efforts of Rainforest Expeditions are some of the most important in Tambopata, and the whole of Peru.
As part of their endeavors to protect and preserve the delicate environment in which they operate, Rainforest Expeditions have several ongoing scientific research programs, such as the Discovering New Species program, where guests are invited to immerse themselves in the research experience and even help name the newly discovered species.
The team is also proud to foster positive relations with the surrounding indigenous communities, including a partnership with the Ese Eja de Infierno community, who are now the co-owners of their Posada Amazonas Lodge, receiving 75% of the profits. And of course Tambopata Research Center with its wonderful Macaw Project.
But perhaps the most commendable element of a green stay in Peru with Rainforest Expeditions is their commitment to increasing awareness of eco-friendly travel and wider sustainability practices. General Manager, Mario Napravnik told us, ‘We have made wonderful allies and met incredible people in the last 30 years, those who have fallen in love with Tambopata. They now have a positive impact on their own environment too – wherever they live – thanks to what they learned with us.’
4. Sol y Luna
At 2800 meters above sea level, Sol y Luna is a luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the Sacred Valley. Boasting several detached bungalows scattered across lush gardens and extensive grounds, the property is a green stay sanctuary for travelers to the region.
Yet Sol y Luna is also much more than that. It’s a hotel with a heart – having first been established to finance Sol y Luna Asociación, a foundation that remains at the core of their operations. Sol y Luna Association is a non-profit civil institution fully funded by the hotel’s profits, along with voluntary contributions from guests, friends, and benefactors. The Association supports the Sol y Luna Intercultural School and four foster homes for children from highland communities, as well as providing training and sustainable employment to local adults.
Over the years, many Aracari guests have enjoyed eco-friendly travel to Sol y Luna, returning home genuinely enriched by their experience there. ‘For us, this is a life choice,’ explains Founder, Marie Helene Miribel, better known as Petit. ‘We dedicate ourselves to this, we live for this and it’s not a simple trend or marketing strategy.’
5. Andean Lodges
First founded in 2006 in Cusco, Andean Lodges consist of hiking circuits connecting four lodges all located more than 4000m/13000ft above sea level in the remote, culturally rich region of Ausangate – the highest and holiest mountain in the Southern Peruvian Andes. From the beginning, Andean Lodges set its mission around creating steady employment for the indigenous people in the area.
These communities possess a deep ancestral knowledge of alpaca and llama herding, as well as traditional textile arts and crafts. Yet because many local people are forced to migrate to be able to make a living, much of their traditional way of life is being lost. Given that these traditions are one of the key attractions for eco-friendly tourism to the region, Andean Lodges work closely with the local community to help them understand and value their culture and heritage to earn a livelihood.
Aracari has been closely connected to Andean Lodges since they began their operations, and General Manager Franco Delgado told us more about the company’s commitment to green travel in Peru. ‘The greatest satisfaction is to see how Andean Lodges has managed to transform the lives of local people who often had to migrate to the jungle to work in illegal mining. To see that now they can work as cooks and managers of our lodges, showcasing their local traditions, receiving fair wages, all whilst remaining on their own land is the most important accomplishment.
Start planning green travel with Aracari today
Of course, these are just five of the nineteen partners featured in our guide to the green stays of Peru. By downloading the complete report, you’ll be equipped with all the knowledge and insight you need to make more sustainable travel choices.
It’s all part of our responsibility to you. So that when you choose a green trip with Aracari, you do so safe in the knowledge that this kind of travel is kinder travel, to the planet and its people.
Get in touch with Marisol and her team today, and let us curate your next Aracari adventure, incorporating as many of our recommended green stays as you desire.

Top Green Destinations In Peru & Getting There With Kuoda
When an excessive number of tourists visit a destination and it results in damage to the local environment and historical sites as well as poorer quality of life for residents, it’s called over tourism – and it’s a very big problem for some of the world’s most popular destinations.
Discussions around the impact of tourism on destinations and the world at large are becoming more common. A recent National Geographic survey revealed that even travelers are increasingly aware of their impact and have a desire to do something about it. In that survey, 42% of US travelers were willing to prioritize sustainable travel in the future.
Organizations like Green Destinations are helping travelers make sustainability a priority. This non-profit foundation for sustainable destination development and recognition works with stakeholders on all levels to make green destinations more visible in the tourist marketplace. Their Top 100 Green Destinations list, for example, features destinations that are moving toward being more sustainable in innovative and effective ways.
There are 9 Peruvian destinations on this year’s list, and we’re going to tell you how you can fulfill your goal of traveling more sustainably and visit these destinations with Kuoda. But first, let’s have a look at exactly how important this award is.
Top 100 Green Stories
Green Destinations uses 5 guiding principles for their awards and certifications process. These are the GREEN values :
- G enuine: Supporting the authentic celebration of local culture and tradition.
- R esponsible and Respectful: Avoiding exploitation of people in tourism and preventing over tourism.
- E conomically sustainable: Involving the local business community and enhancing local community employment.
- E nvironment & Climate-friendly: Combatting the climate crisis, environmental degradation and pollution, whilst ensuring public health.
- N ature & Scenery friendly: Protecting scenic views, landscapes, natural habitats and wildlife
2021 was the 8 th edition of the Top 100 Green Destinations stories competition. This competition encourages destinations to share their innovative and effective Good Practice Stories in order to inspire tour operators, travelers, and others to be more sustainable in terms of tourism efforts.
Green Destinations in Peru
There were 9 Peruvian destinations that made it to the 2021 Top 100 Green Destinations list. These were:
- Tambopata National Reserve, Madre de Dios
- Alto Mayo, Tarapoto
- Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Loreto
- Gocta and Kuelap, Amazonas
- Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary, Lambayeque
- Tingo Maria National Park, Huanuco
- Lake Titicaca, Puno
- Sandia, Coffee Route, and Bahuaja Sonene National Park, Puno
- Colca Canyon, Arequipa
The Peruvian government has, of late, increased coordination with regional and local agents of tourism in both the public and private sector in order to improve processes for sustainable tourism. While carbon neutrality efforts at Machu Pichu have received worldwide attention, the appearance of these 9 destinations on the Green Destination Top 100 list demonstrates that efforts at achieving sustainability are taking hold across the country.
Sustainable Tours of Green Destinations with Kuoda
Those travelers who wish to be more mindful of their impact while they move around the globe have ample opportunity for green travel in Peru, which also offers a wealth of natural and cultural experiences.
Kuoda offers incredible experiences in 6 of the 9 destinations on this years Green Destination Top 100 list and you can learn more about each below.
Tambopata National Reserve
The Tambopata National Reserve is a secluded 1,061 square-miles of preserved land crossed by the Malinowski, Tambopata, and Madre de Dios rivers in Southeastern Peru. It’s one of the most biodiverse places in the world, with over 100 species of mammals, 600 species of birds, and 1,000 species of butterflies.
Kuoda offers visits to the Reserve on our Jungle, Machu Pichu, and Lake Titicaca 12 day/11 night tour. On this itinerary, visitors can take a boat to the Tambopata jungle where they’ll have the opportunity to paddle down rivers and view exotic birds and wildlife.
Kuoda also has a 10 day/9 night Amazon and Machu Pichu tour, wherein we offer the opportunity to embark on a night-time jungle excursion. On this adventure, our guests have the chance to see the creatures that only come alive well after the sun has set.
Colca Canyon
The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons on earth. Its ravine is 10,725 feet deep, which is nearly double that of the Grand Canyon. As spectacular as this canyon is to hike, it’s also home to cultural communities with ancient roots, some of Peru’s most captivating archeological sites, Andean condors and other wildlife, and even natural hot springs.
We have endless things to keep you fascinated while in Arequipa and the Colca Canyon. From trekking and rafting to wildlife watching and petroglyphs, Kuoda offers customized Colca Canyon trips that give you a chance to experience this part of Peru any way you want to.
Puno and Lake Titicaca
Sandia, the Coffee Route, and Bahuaja Sonene National Park are all located around Puno. Situated at 4,000 meters, Puno is also the main access point for Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and the birthplace of humankind, according to the Inca’s.
Kuoda has designed a Discover Southern Peru tour , where we travel via private driver from the Colca Canyon in Arequipa to Puno. If the drive along these roads deep into the majestic countryside of Peru didn’t impress you, then your private boat tour of the famous Uros floating reed islands will. After that, we can add a visit Taquile Island, which is known for its master weavers.
But this part of Peru could be a vacation all on its own, which is why we offer a host of options for a trip to Titicaca, including accommodation on the privately owned island of Suasi, private cultural tours and homestay experiences, and city tours around Puno.
Gocta – Kuelap
Kuelap is a pre-Inca fortress that was built in 500 AD. It’s called the Machu Pichu of the North and it’s just as impressive, with 60-foot exterior walls and some of the most incredible examples of stone work in all of South America.
Kuelap is located in the northern Amazon outside of Chachapoyas and it’s a main feature of another pre-designed itinerary: the Chachapoyas-Kuelap luxury tour . This beautiful colonial city serves as the gateway to ancient archeological sites and jungle attractions, another one of which is also a member of the Top 100 Green Destinations list: Gocta.
Gocta is the third tallest waterfall in the world, and it wasn’t known to outsiders until 2005. Stretching 2,530 feet into the Peruvian Amazon sky, you can experience this stunning site via horseback rides or hikes, depending on how you’d like to personalize your trip.
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is 8,000 square-miles of incredible diversity. There are 109 species of land mammals, 400 species of birds, 60 species of reptiles, 250 species of fish, and over 1,200 plant varieties protected within these borders.
There’s a long list of ways to experience Pacaya Samiria with Kuoda. An Amazonian luxury cruise is an exclusive way to get there, where you’ll spend your days in the wild Amazon jungle and your evenings being fed delicious dishes and star gazing on the observation deck.
More About Our Commitment to Sustainability
More and more travelers are taking into consideration the impact that their travel has on local environments and communities. The Top 100 Green Destinations stories program features destinations that are using innovative and effective processes for achieving sustainability, and it’s an invaluable list to consult when you’re planning your next sustainable vacation.
This year, 9 destinations in Peru made it to the list, and Kuoda gives you exclusive access to 6 of them. But we’re a certified carbon-neutral company that really aims to be sustainable in all of our endeavors. Find out more about our certificates here .

Tour escorts, motorcoach drivers, and venue hosts cannot physicallly lift or assist travekers into transportation vehicles. Green River Lines required passengers needing assistance, to be accompanied by a companion(s) who is totally capable of providing assistance as needed.

The device must be stowed in the baggage compartments dimensions 33″ x 33″ x 48.” Please allow sufficient time for stowing any wheeled mobility device. Refrigerated Medications – If you require refrigerated or cooled medication, it is your responsibility to acquire the appropriate means of cooling. Some, but not all hotel facilities have refrigerators available to patrons. If you so require a refrigerator in your room please make arrangements with your escort 2 weeks prior to departure.

The service animal may not travel in the aisle or occupy a seat, but must remain strictly within the customer’s space.
Please Note – Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under ADA. Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.
Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.
Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.
The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.
Total solar eclipse 2024 highlights: Live coverage, videos and more
During the cosmic spectacle, the moon’s movements will temporarily block the sun’s light, creating minutes of darkness, and will make the sun's outer atmosphere, or the corona, visible as a glowing halo.
Here are moments of the celestial activities across the country:

Billy and Green Llama left nothing to chance, the trip was well planned, well executed and we had a great time. Our journey took us from Lima to Puno, Cusco and throughout the Sacred Valley and ended in Machu Picchu. Each stop along the way was amazing and Billy knew exactly what to see, when and how - again, nothing was left to chance.
