Munising Tourist Park Campground – Stunning Lake Superior Views Close To Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

In our travels around the state, we’ve camped at many state parks and private campgrounds. From time to time, we will be sharing some of our favorite campgrounds – these are not paid advertisements but are our recommendations and reviews based on positive experiences. One of our favorite campgrounds in the Upper Peninsula is Munising Tourist Park Campground in Munising, which offers great sites for tents or RVs and showcases stunning Lake Superior sunsets. Its close proximity to the western end of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has also always been a positive for us, and it is a very short drive back into Munising along M-28 should you need any of the modern conveniences offered in town.

Recent upgrades have dramatically improved the showers and restrooms, and for those who want to be able to share vacation pictures with those back home, strong and reliable wifi is available. There are 127 total sites, and 78 of those have water and electric hookups. 26 sites feature water, electric and sewer hookups. There are also 23 rustic tent sites and some overflow sites. Prices vary from $25 to $39 per night, which is on par with what you would pay to stay in a state park.

Our preferred sites are those right next to the beach on Lake Superior, with a stunning view of Grand Island (1-13, 72-80, 88-100). For those who have sites elsewhere in the park, there is a picnic area between these sites with access to the beach. Head over to  https://munisingtouristpark.com/reservations/ to make an online reservation.

If things work out, this can be a great spot to catch a stunning sunset. The views here are fantastic no matter what, and the sound of gentle waves hitting the shore at night makes it very easy to fall asleep. We definitely have no problem recommending this campground, and would encourage you to check out the following sites that fall within a 10 minute drive or less – text links will lead to pages with more details:

Bay Furnace Historic Site and State Forest Campground

Scott Falls

Munising Falls

Grand Island Range Lights

Munising Range Lights

Horseshoe Falls

Wagner Falls

Alger Falls

The campground is located at 8518 W. M-28 in Munising, and their website:  https://munisingtouristpark.com/ shows a detailed map of the campground and offers online reservations.

This place gets booked up fast in the summer months due to its proximity to the more scenic sections of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. They have a nice "Overflow" area, that also serves as a "first come first serve" area. Depending on how many people are already in the overflow you better have a long power cable. We had to use our 100' 20 amp cable with a 30 amp adapter to make it, because there was a class A between us and the power box. Water was a bit easier to get to, needed only 50' of hose. We didn't really get a chance to explore the campground itself, but it seemed ok. Lakefront sites, decent dump station, and close to the town of Munising.

We stayed here for our last night visiting Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It's a pretty basic RV park with exactly what you night expect in terms of amenities & limited privacy. We had water & electric at our site and made use of the showers & dump station during our stay. Everything was pretty clean.

The main reason for giving this place four stars has to do with the location of the park and the friendliness of the staff. You have access to a clean beach right from the part, and it's a pretty easy kayak or canoe paddle to the Grand Isle from this location. It's a short bike ride or long walk to the Duck Pond Eatery which has a nice back patio, really good food, and a lengthy beer selection. The campground is also fairly close to downtown Munising which makes it pretty easy to get groceries, etc.

All in all, not a bad pick if you're visiting the area and want a decent place to stay.

We could stay only a day and as luck would have it, Site 98 gave us the lake less than 20 steps from our door WITH full hookups.

I was warmly welcomed and the registration process was smooth. All sites have a fire ring and table with adequate space between sites. A rainfall caused several sites to have ankle-high water (63/62/56). The restrooms and showers are clean.

I will echo the prior posts, it's a decent campground to experience the area and my overall score of 5 stars reflects the lakeshore site. There is some road noise from Hwy 28 but the lakeshore sites and views will make up for it.

really nice water front spots and water views from other sites as well; great wooded tent sites at either end of the park Sites are pretty close together without much privacy A few sites looked pretty muddy, so it would be good to call ahead to check Bathrooms are really well maintained and clean Noise from the road is pretty limited Good Verizon & ATT signal; Sprint was ok, but calls had static

We were lucky to get in here, it was a full campground & we booked way in advance. I wish we could have been on the water the waterfront sites are nice with a fire ring right off the beach. There is beautiful driftwood all over the beach and a nice view. We had full hook up which is nice.

We made dinner and sat to eat and we hear an ice cream truck tune which was one of the staff riding a tricycle playing the music selling ice cream. That was special. It was cold out we had to run the heater at night in July.

Close by several towns and Picture Rock. Miners rock has a small trail that you can walk & see Picture Rock from there. The weather was windy & rainy out so we didn't do the boat ride to it. If it was nice out we would have Kayaked to it. There are many falls in the area most have a small hike to them but easy hikes.

I gave them a 3 on noise due to the family with 5 kids camping in a tent next to us with a crying baby the entire time.

When it comes to campgrounds in Munising there are limited choices. Especially if you are a freestyle camper and like to go with the flow staying a few nights here or there, not making reservations.

This places has great views of the lake and a nice little beach to walk on.

My biggest gripe is the bathrooms. They are actually pretty new but not well taken care of at all. You can tell that folks are not campers. Never see a toilet brush!! Run out of TP constantly. Good places know you clean really good once a day and do spot checks especially in the evening.

We stayed in a w/e site with lake views and enjoyed. Gravel on the newly refurbished sites made for level and dry camping. Gorgeous view of the sunset and a quick walk to the sandy beach. Route 23 is just behind the campground which made it noisy but the campers themselves were quiet

The campground itself is not bad, electric and water for 30$ a night.

The site was kind of level, but not perfect.

It rained a lot the days before our arrival, so it was pretty muddy everywhere.

What makes me give it the rating of 3 stars is the unfriendly staff:

10 minutes before checkout (noon), we were packing up getting ready to leave. Someone came to tell us that we had to hurry up. There was nobody waiting for our spot!!!

Good cell service with AT&T.

W/E only with dump site available. Water is at the front of sites and shared between two sites. Have enough hose with you to connect. Our site 30 amp. Two electric hookups on pole between sites. Some may need extra cord, these are located at about midway depth of sites. Sites themselves are very wide but how you connect to hookups determines how you park and how close your neighbor is. Sites are grass, sand or gravel. Fairly level. We were backed in directly to highway with a row of trees separating. Very noisy from traffic. WiFi good but slow Lake view and access excellent, try for a site on lake. We did have a fire ring and table at our site. Roads are absolute disaster of mud and giant craters/potholes Staff friendly and helpful

Heading to a nearby casino to park for the night when we drove by and saw this place. Called up and was able to get a lakefront site on Saturday in late August, we lucked out. I asked on the phone what the site what like and the attendant chuckled and said to come by, we would like it. We did! Site 3 is very large with direct access to the water, this is a shared beach entrance but it seemed like we were the only ones enjoying the waterfront. The views are amazing. Electric and Water only. I hope to come back and enjoy this place again.

Cascading waterfalls surrounded by red and orange leaves of the fall foliage.

Hands down, the best camping on Lake Superior in Michigan is along the Upper Peninsula. The peninsula straddles Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, making it one of the most robust places to camp in the state. There are many water and land activities, as well as a rich history. Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, is the premier camping spot for anyone looking to soak up the outdoors. These seven campgrounds are the best of the Upper Peninsula — where you can get the most out of camping on Lake Superior in Michigan .

The Fort Wilkins campground in Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is on the north end of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The campground has sites for tents and RVs, with electric hookups, Wi-Fi, flush toilets, and laundry. The park features a restored military outpost from 1844 and one of the first lighthouses on Lake Superior. You can also fish for splake and walleye on Lake Fanny Hooe, walk the hiking trails, or drive the scenic road overlooking Lake Superior. Pack up the kids and head to Fort Wilkins, where you can recreate, relax, and learn some remarkable history.

“Great campground to unplug. There is WIFI at the modern bathroom, but we only had to use that once. Our site in the West Campground was well shaded, it seemed as though trees separated every campsite allowing for privacy and nature views everywhere. Behind our site we could access the bike/walking trail that led to the historic fort and into the town of Copper Harbor. It was a bit chilly the week we visited so we didn’t go swimming, but Lake Fanny Hooe looked gorgeous.” – Makayla B.

2. Rivermouth

The Rivermouth Modern Campground is the modern camping option in Tahquamenon State Park . It’s at one of the most sought-after waterfalls in Michigan, Tahquamenon Falls. They have reservable sites for tents and RVs, with electric hookups, flush toilets, showers, and a boat launch with equipment rentals. You’ll never get bored at Tahquamenon State Park. The campground sits right at the mouth where Tahquamenon River meets Lake Superior. You can fish in the river, float in Lake Superior’s Whitefish Bay, or take in the incredible waterfall. You’re also close to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum , Whitefish Point Bird Observatory , and Oswald’s Bear Refuge .

“We had such a great time at this park! The sites were quite generous in size and we felt like we had adequate privacy. Of course the main attraction itself, the falls, can be heard late at night, right from the campground; it’s amazing. Do you kayak? It’s a must! They provide a slide/railing to easily Portage your kayak down to the water, and from there, paddle to the island for a different perspective of the upper and lower falls! Trust me!” – Lisa P.

  • Price: $20-32
  • Number of sites: 72

3. Union Bay

The Union Bay campground at Porcupine Mountains State Park sits right on Union Bay of Lake Superior. The campground has reservable sites for tents and RVs, with electric hookups, flush toilets, showers, and a store. Get your spot early for a site with lakeside views. You’re within walking distance to Lake Superior’s sandy shores. Use the boat launch to access the lake, or explore the trails, rivers, and waterfalls in one of Michigan’s largest wilderness areas. Union Bay is a nature lover’s paradise, with outdoor adventures around every corner. For more primitive camping, check out the park’s rustic Presque Isle campground .

“I absolutely loved campsite 28 in the Union Bay Campground. You sit right next to Lake Superior overlooking the water! Between you and the water is a beautiful large rocky beach area that spans the shoreline for miles. Especially because you also get a wonderful view of the sunset. At night we laid out on the rocks and watched the stars! All night long you hear the waves crashing into shore. It was so peaceful. It is hard for me to look for other campsites at different campgrounds because of how much I loved this spot. This site is hard to beat! Not to mention how beautiful the rest of the park was. Mountains, waterfalls, and thousands of acres of forest. I will be coming back for another visit.” – Frances P.

The McLain State Park campground is on the west end of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The campground has reservable sites for tents and RVs, with electric hookups, flush toilets, showers, and a store. You’re mere steps from Lake Superior, making this campground one of the best options for wading in the water. Watch the sun rise and set over the lake while the kiddos built sandcastles on the beach. McLain is a great place to camp if you want extraordinary views of Lake Superior, where you can relax and take in the natural beauty of the world’s largest freshwater lake.

“The sites are overly spacious and well dispersed. Everything is super clean. Over a mile of beach gives every camper enough room to feel like the entire lake is theirs to enjoy alone. I couldn’t be much happier with this campground. The best state campground I’ve been to in Michigan so far. It’s a gem.” – Richard E.
