Visa Requirements for 2023 World Cup Travel to Australia and New Zealand

passport on top of a planner

As the 2023 World Cup approaches, it’s important to ensure you have all the necessary documents for travel. If you plan on visiting Australia or New Zealand for the tournament, you must check the visa requirements and apply for one in advance.

In fact, New Zealand is recommending visitors to have applications submitted by end of April to avoid any processing concerns.

Note: if you’re flying through in-transit and not staying in either country, there may be applicable visas to consider as well.

How to Find Your Seat Location at the World Cup

Australia 🇦🇺

The Australian Department of Home Affairs website has all the details you need to know about obtaining a visa, including eligibility criteria and application procedures.

UPDATE (July 2023)

Australian Government has approved a “Temporary Activity” visa (subclass 408) for those traveling to the Women’s World Cup. This may only be applicable to certain countries who cannot get an eVisa or other visas as regularly and/or quickly if its citizens were not traveling for the World Cup.

Everyone should read through the details at the Australian Department of Home Affairs website to determine their best method of visa to enter/depart Australia based on their own citizenship. When all else fails, it does seem like this subclass 408 visa would be worthwhile application.

Where Can I See More Information?

What are the expected processing times?

Pulling from the above website:

  • 25% of applications: 1 Day
  • 50% of applications: 3 Days
  • 75% of applications: 5 Days
  • 90% of applications: 13 Days

What Is the Cost?

  • It appears the cost is Free if you can prove eligibility for attending the World Cup

Other Comments

  • You must provide a letter of endorsement from the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Local FIFA Subsidiary to take part in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

How to Apply

  • Follow the steps outlined in this Australian government site.

New Zealand 🇳🇿

Similarly, New Zealand’s immigration website provides all the necessary information about visa requirements and how to apply for them. Be sure to check the specific requirements that apply to your country of origin.

Other Notes

In addition to visa requirements, it’s important to keep track of your World Cup ticket confirmation numbers. These numbers are available in your FIFA account and are also sent to you via email once a purchase is complete. While there’s nothing officially about needing these confirmation numbers in regards to a visa to either country, you never know if you’ll need them in the future so it is smart to ensure you are familiar with accessing this data.

For those who have attended previous World Cup tournaments, you know that accommodation and transportation are key considerations. With the tournament set to take place across multiple cities in two countries , it’s essential to plan ahead and book accommodation in each host city or a few cities you plan to base yourself in.

Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

eVisitor  (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.

Visitor visa  (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs  website.

If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

Working Holiday Visas

Australia's Working Holiday Maker program allows visitors aged under 30 (or 35 in certain cases) who hold a passport from a participating country to travel and work in Australia. Working holiday visas are valid for one year, or up to three years if you meet certain conditions.

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
  • Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
  • Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
  • Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

If you haven’t already, read the  Australia Visa Guide  to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600, Tourist Stream) Sample

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. For example, most Indian passport holders get a 3-year valid Australian visa, whereas Phillippine passport holders get a 1-year valid visa. Pakistan nationals get a 6-month validity.

You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

Visa extension

Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to  extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

AABCs are typically managed by VFS Global. They charge a service fee for biometric collection. This fee depends on AABC and the country you are applying from.

How and When to Get a Visa to Visit Australia

Katie Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

US citizens can travel to many countries visa-free, but Australia isn't one of them. If you're thinking about traveling to Australia, you'll need to plan ahead and obtain valid travel documentation. Here's what you need to know before traveling to Australia as a US citizen with a US passport.

What Visa Do I Need?

The Australian government makes it easy to determine the visa you need with its Visa Finder website . This website asks three questions, the first of which is about the purpose of your trip (think: vacation, visiting relations, attending an event, doing business and seeking medical treatment, among others):

australia world cup tourist visa

The next question asks the country of your passport:

australia world cup tourist visa

And the final question asks how long you'd like to stay in Australia — either less than or more than three months.

australia world cup tourist visa

Most travelers from the US will likely be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601) — also called an ETA — as I was for my most recent month-long trip.

australia world cup tourist visa

This is because an ETA is available to US citizens visiting Australia for three months for reasons that fit into the following categories:

  • Holiday or vacation
  • Visit to see friends or family
  • Select business activities such as general business or employment inquiries; investigate, negotiate, sign or review a business contract; or attend a conference, trade fair or seminar

Since most US citizens traveling to Australia will be traveling for one of these reasons (and, as a result, are eligible to apply for an ETA) I'll focus on ETAs available to US citizens with a US passport.

What Are the Requirements?

To apply for an ETA, you must:

  • Have a valid passport from an eligible country (including the US).
  • Apply while outside Australia.
  • Wish to stay no longer than three months at a time (you must not study for more than three months, for example).
  • Be free from tuberculosis.
  • Not have any criminal convictions for which you have been sentenced for a total combined period of 12 months or more, whether or not you served the sentence(s).
  • Have paid back any debt — of either yourself or your family — or arranged to pay back any debt to the Australian government.

How Much Does It Cost to Apply Online?

The ETA is free, but there is an online application service charge of 20 Australian dollars (about $14) per applicant. As US passport holders -- along with seven other nationalities -- must apply online, there's no escaping the online application service charge. The fees for my recent ETA applications coded as "Bills and Utilities" on my Chase Sapphire Reserve statement, so don't expect the fee to code as "Travel."

australia world cup tourist visa

How Long Does It Take?

The Australian government says "processing time for this visa is not available" and that the visa may take longer to process if:

  • You don't fill it out correctly
  • It takes the Australian government additional time to verify your information

Most ETA applications are approved immediately, and those that need additional processing are usually handled within 24 hours. This being said, the Australian government recommends travelers get an approved ETA before booking any nonrefundable travel. Once an ETA is granted, it is valid for one year and allows multiple entries up to three months each.

How Do I Apply?

The online ETA application takes about five minutes to complete. To start an application, click "Apply for an ETA."

australia world cup tourist visa

Step 1 : Select whether you need a Tourist ETA or a Business Visitor ETA, and certify that you are currently located outside Australia.

Step 2 : Enter your personal details, whether you have an alias, answer a question about your criminal record and enter your passport information.

Step 3 : Enter your address, phone number and email. Select whether you wish to receive communications by SMS and declare whether you hold any passports issued by other countries.

Step 4 : Confirm your information.

Step 5 : Pay the online service charge of 20 Australian dollars (about $14) using a credit card.

How Do I Check My Status?

Once you have submitted an online ETA application, you'll receive a response. The response may:

  • Notify you that your ETA has been granted.
  • Advise you that your application has been referred for further assessment. You can then check the status of your application after 12 hours by logging back into the ETA system and selecting the option "Check an ETA."
  • Advise you to contact the nearest Australian visa office to make a new application.

My response came immediately in an email titled, "ETA Application for Australia [CLIENT-IN-CONFIDENCE] (PROD)" that confirmed my application had "been successful," my payment had been received, that I was now the proud holder of a "valid ETA for Australia" and that my ETA had been linked to my passport, so no additional documents would be required during the travel process.

australia world cup tourist visa

What Do I Need to Print Before Travel?

Nothing. When your ETA is linked to your passport, it becomes available to both airline representatives as well as Australian immigration authorities. So, there's no need to print your confirmation once your ETA has been granted.

Other Questions

If you have other questions about ETAs, or other types of Australian visas, take a look at the Australian government's Visa Finder website . Questions such as how to combine multiple visa types if the purpose of your trip changes and what to do if you get a new passport are covered on the website.

Australia travel requirements: rules for entry for Indians

By Condé Nast Traveller

Australia has opened borders to international travellers

Australia opened borders to fully vaccinated tourists on 21 February, along with a flurry of changes to ease travel to the continent. Recent significant changes include mandatory online lodgement for visa applications, a visa application fee waiver for travellers with visas that expired during the pandemic, and no requirement for quarantine on arrival. Among the big-ticket events coming up is the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup from 22 October to 13 November 2022. Here is all you need to know to plan that Australia holiday this year.

Rules for entry to Australia

All travellers above 18 need to be fully vaccinated to enter Australia. Here is the full list of all that is required to be eligible for entry into the country.

  • All fully vaccinated visa holders can travel to Australia without a travel exemption. They will need to carry their COVID-19 vaccination certificate. To request an exemption, you will need to show proof of medical contraindication to the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Passengers arriving by air into Australia should complete the Digital Passenger Declaration . You can complete the form seven days before your flight to Australia, but you can only submit it 72 hours prior to departure, as the declaration requires your health information 72 hours before the flight. \
  • A negative RT-PCR test or other nucleic acid amplification test result taken within three days of the flight's scheduled departure for Australia, or a medical certificate as evidence of a negative Rapid Antigen Test taken under medical supervision within 24 hours before scheduled flight departure,. for all adults conducted within 72 hours of the travel date. You must complete this before you check into the flight. Parents or guardians should complete a declaration for any child under 16 years of age. \
  • Children below the age of 12 can access the same travel arrangements as fully vaccinated people for international travel purposes. Temporary visa holders under the age of 18 at the time of departure for Australia do not require an approved travel exemption when travelling with at least one fully vaccinated adult. \
  • All travellers need to undertake a self-monitored, Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), within 24 hours of arrival into Australia. Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) results need to be reported to the respective state authority only if you test positive. Tourists travelling to South Australia will have to undertake a PCR test within 24 hours of arrival and those travelling to Western Australia will have to undergo a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) within 12 hours of arrival.  \
  • Check for updates on the requirements of the state or territory of your arrival, and any others you plan to travel to, especially for vaccination, quarantine and post-arrival testing requirements, as restrictions may change on short notice.

Travel from India to Australia

Qantas introduced a nonstop direct flight from Delhi to Sydney, and a flight from Darwin to Sydney and onwards to Delhi, starting 6 December 2021. Currently, Air India operates nonstop flights from Delhi to Sydney or Melbourne. Connecting flights via other airlines to Australia are available from most major cities in India.

Visas to Australia

Indian travellers to Australia can apply for an e-visa online here . Processing time is estimated at a week given the submission of all requested information. If a traveller held a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) to Australia that has either expired or will expire between 20 March 2020 and 30 June 2022, they can indicate eligibility for the Visa Application Charge waiver while applying for a new visa. You need to lodge your application by 31 December 2022 to receive the VAC waiver.

Fast-track visa process for Indians headed Down Under for T20 World Cup

While the visa process has been eased for indians attending the upcoming icc t20 world cup, india's wicket-keeper batsman rishabh pant said the indian cricket team and he would love to have as many supporters as possible in australia to back them and that every cheer counts..

Profile image

Indian cricket fans travelling to Australia for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup will have less to worry about, at least when it concerns their visas. A fast-track visa process has been put in place for people going Down Under for the mega cricket event.

"One of the amazing things is that if you buy a ticket, you have a fast-tracked visa system in place. So the organisers, through official ticket agents in India, have made an arrangement with the government in Australia to get a fast-tracked ticket so you get a decision in two or three days. Hopefully, there should be no barrier," said Brendan McClements, Chief Executive Officer of Visit Victoria.

Visa for the World Cup 2026

Visa Information For Travellers To The 2026 World Cup

Visas for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 World Cup will be expanded to include 16 additional teams, resulting in more matches, but the tournament will still be completed within five weeks, beginning in mid-June 2026, with the tournament taking place in 11 locations in the USA, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.

Given the large number of flights that will be necessary to transport teams, fans, media, and FIFA representatives across three countries, sustainability will be an essential consideration.

As a direct result of the popularity of football in North America continuing to rise, FIFA will expand the next men’s World Cup finals from 32 to 48 teams, and attendance is expected to break records.

FIFA predicts that as many as 5.5 million supporters will attend the next tournament, surpassing the record of 3.6 million fans who attended games in 1994, when the average attendance per game was 68,000.

The increased format will also increase the number of African and Asian teams competing.

World Cup 2026 Host Countries

  • United States

Click below to see more information about the current available visa types for the United States of America.

There will be a minimum of 17 and a maximum of 19 teams from the two confederations in 2026, depending on which two nations win the six-team intercontinental playoffs for the finals.

CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) will qualify at least six teams for the World Cup, including hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and will also have two teams in the playoffs.

All 16 venues for the 2026 tournament have already been constructed and are large-capacity stadiums.

Some stadiums will be upgraded before 2026, and some will require the installation of grass surfaces, as FIFA does not permit artificial turf.

Currently, the format for the 2026 tournament will include 80 matches, but this is subject to change.

The United States will host sixty games, including every game from the quarterfinals onward, while Canada and Mexico will each host ten games.

The United States and Mexico have previously hosted the World Cup, but most venues will be different in 2026. The United States is not using any of its 1994-era stadiums, while Mexico has only one venue from 1970 to 1986: the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

2026 World Cup Host Venues

There will be 11 venues in the USA, 2 in Canada and 3 in Mexico. The venues to be attended are as follows:

The History of the FIFA World Cup

There is nothing comparable to the World Cup in football. Even though the UEFA Champions League may produce games of comparable quality, it cannot surpass the prestige earned by its long history and the fact that one team represents an entire nation. No other sporting event can compare to the magnitude of the most recent FIFA World Cup, which was viewed by over three billion television viewers worldwide, one billion of whom watched the championship game.

All World Cup Competitions

Since Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930, the competition has taken place every four years (with exceptions for interruption due to the Second World War). However, there were unofficial pre-FIFA World Cups as early as the late 1800s, when there were few national teams. Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, held in 1909 and 1911, was an unofficial “world cup” organized before 1930.

In addition, the Summer Olympic football competitions would indicate which national teams were the best before 1930. The Olympic tournaments, however, consisted solely of amateur teams, whereas the World Cup became the “real deal.”

The next World Cup’s geographical distribution has not yet been announced, but teams will likely compete in regionalized zones during the group stage. There are three main clusters of venues, which should reduce travel requirements for at least a portion of the tournament.

Western region:

  • San Francisco Bay Area
  • Guadalajara
  • Los Angeles

Central Region:

  • Kansas City
  • Mexico City

Eastern region:

  • Philadelphia
  • New York/New Jersey

Useful Resources For USA Visas

The world cup effect: infrastructure and immigration requirement and visa issues.

Having the necessary infrastructure in place can be crucial to the success of a large-scale event. And in certain nations, the promises of improved infrastructure and the prospect of greater tourism dollars are significant incentives for filing a bid and garnering the most support from the population.

FIFA specifies 12 stadiums with a minimum capacity between 40,000 and 80,000, depending on the matches played there. Additionally, each team needs its base camp training location and a training site at each stadium. Beginning in 2026, the World Cup will require 14 venues and 150 training grounds.

Transportation

FIFA Requirement: Each stadium must be in close proximity to an airport with a minimum capacity of 1,450 people per hour.

Countries must be able to accommodate the temporary demand rise in airport terminals, passport control and immigration checks, runways, fueling stations, and highways leading to airports in cities across the nation. In certain instances, infrastructure such as terminals are constructed to be ephemeral, as this flow of people is only temporary.

Accommodations

FIFA requires 72 base camp hotels for teams and officials and four hotels per stadium site. Each host city requires 1,760 to 8,080 hotel rooms for spectators, depending on which match will be played there.

Hotels must be able to accommodate the massive flood of domestic and international fans. Brazil brought in six cruise ships with an additional 10,000 rooms to accommodate the demand for hotel rooms. To accomplish this, though, the port had to be renovated, which was a $7 billion endeavour. Qatar constructed a brand-new city with 22 brand-new hotels, transforming an empty desert into a luxury 450,000-person, 38-square-mile metropolis at a cost of $45 billion.

Immigration and Travel Visa guarantees

Referring to immigration and travel guarantees for the 2026 World Cup, a recently released overview document from FIFA states, “In order to meet the needs of the respective groups of individuals, the government is requested to establish a visa-free environment or facilitate existing visa procedures.” Regardless, all visa procedures must be administered without discrimination.”

Trump’s rise to the presidency before his inauguration was fuelled by anti-immigrant prejudice and propaganda. As part of his anti-terrorism efforts, Trump has called for a total ban on Muslim immigration to the United States. As so-called acts of terrorism grew globally, his viewpoint looked to be vindicated.

However, the courts have now halted his executive order aiming to prohibit admission into the US for citizens from numerous Muslim-majority nations.

Despite FIFA’s demands for visa exemptions, the organization’s overview document states: “It is agreed that such ease of entry to the host country/host countries must in no way compromise national immigration and security norms in the host country/host countries.”

In addition, the agreement states: “A bidding country’s government is required to guarantee the issuance of legitimate work permits to all individuals involved in the planning, organization, and hosting of the tournament, without any restrictions or preconditions.”

Equally, “the host nation’s government must grant a general tax exemption to FIFA, the 2026 FWC (FIFA World Cup) Entity, the 2026 FWC Subsidiaries (if applicable), and any other FIFA subsidiary for the period of preparation, delivery, and wrap-up of the Competition, beginning on the date of appointment of the host country/host countries and ending on December 31, 2028,” according to the document.

Following the 2015 corruption scandal that engulfed soccer’s governing body, FIFA has implemented new bidding criteria. As part of the revisions, the most recent rules include commitments to ethics, human rights, transparency, and stadium size and infrastructure requirements.

Visas, permits, immigration, check-in procedures for the 2026 World Cup

It is anticipated that a considerable number of foreign nationals will enter and exit the Host Country/Host Countries because the FIFA World Cup is a global athletic event in which teams from all 211 FIFA member associations may compete and which poses enormous organizational issues. This includes:

  • Individuals involved in the preparation and organization of the Competition throughout the entirety of the preparation phase;
  • Persons engaged in the preparation of the stay of participating teams in the Competition in the year leading up to the Competition; and
  • Individuals entering and traveling throughout the Host Country/Countries during the Competition.

To meet the demands of the various groups of individuals, the Government is urged to develop a visa-free environment or to streamline the visa application process. All visa procedures must be applied in a non-discriminatory manner.

The Competition’s success will largely depend on the ease with which foreign nationals may visit the Host Country/Host Countries in connection with the Competition (also at short notice). It is acknowledged, however, that such ease of access to the Host Country/Countries must in no way compromise national immigration and security norms in the Host Country/Countries.

In addition, to support the preparation, organization, hosting, and staging of the Competition, the Government must ensure that certain individuals have access to expedited immigration procedures, such as express lanes and other specialized services. In particular, the persons participating in the planning and organisation of the Competition must be empowered to carry out their jobs in an efficient manner.

How to Obtain a U.S. Visitor Visa for the T20 World Cup 2024

Are you excited about attending the Men’s ICC T20 Cricket World Cup in the USA in 2024? To make your dream a reality, you will need to obtain a U.S. visitor visa. In this blog post, we will guide you through the application process and provide you with some useful tips to increase your chances of obtaining the visa.

Understanding the U.S. Visitor Visa

The U.S. visitor visa, also known as the B-2 visa, is a non-immigrant visa that allows individuals to enter the United States for tourism, pleasure, or visiting friends and family. Attending a sporting event, such as the T20 World Cup, falls under the category of tourism.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before applying for a U.S. visitor visa, it’s important to ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements. These requirements include having a valid passport, demonstrating strong ties to your home country, and providing evidence of sufficient funds to cover your travel expenses.

Step 2: Complete the Online Application

The next step is to complete the online application form, known as the DS-160. This form collects information about your background, purpose of travel, and other relevant details. Make sure to answer all the questions accurately and truthfully.

Step 3: Pay the Application Fee

Once you have submitted the DS-160 form, you will need to pay the non-refundable application fee. The fee amount may vary, so it’s important to check the current fee on the official U.S. Department of State website. Keep the payment receipt as you will need it for the next step.

Step 4: Schedule and Attend the Visa Interview

After paying the application fee, you will be able to schedule your visa interview appointment. The interview is a crucial step in the visa application process, as it allows the consular officer to assess your eligibility and intentions. Be prepared to provide supporting documents, such as your passport, application confirmation page, and proof of ties to your home country.

Step 5: Prepare Supporting Documents

Along with your passport and application confirmation page, it’s important to gather additional supporting documents to strengthen your visa application. These may include bank statements to demonstrate your financial stability, a letter from your employer stating your leave of absence, and proof of accommodation and travel arrangements for the duration of your stay in the USA.

Step 6: Attend the Visa Interview

On the day of your visa interview, arrive at the U.S. embassy or consulate early and dress appropriately. Answer all questions honestly and confidently. The consular officer may ask about your purpose of travel, ties to your home country, and your plans during your stay in the USA. Remember to remain calm and polite throughout the interview.

Step 7: Wait for Visa Processing

After the interview, the consular officer will inform you if your visa application is approved or denied. If approved, your passport will be returned to you with the visa affixed to a page inside. The processing time may vary, so it’s important to apply well in advance of your planned travel dates.

Here are some final tips to increase your chances of obtaining a U.S. visitor visa:

  • Be well-prepared: Gather all the necessary documents and practice answering potential interview questions.
  • Show strong ties to your home country: Provide evidence of your intent to return after the T20 World Cup, such as property ownership, employment, or family commitments.
  • Be honest and clear: Answer all questions truthfully and concisely during the visa interview.
  • Apply early: Submit your visa application well in advance to allow for any unforeseen delays in processing.

Attending the Men’s ICC T20 Cricket World Cup in the USA in 2024 is an exciting opportunity for cricket enthusiasts. By following the steps outlined in this blog post and preparing your application thoroughly, you can increase your chances of obtaining a U.S. visitor visa and experience the thrilling tournament firsthand. Good luck!

Big names miss out as Australia reveal squad for T20 World Cup

A host of big names have missed selection as Australia announced their 15-player group for next month's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Veteran batter Steve Smith, young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk, experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff and all-rounder Matt Short all miss the cut as the 2021 T20 World Cup champions sprung some surprises when revealing their squad for the four-week tournament in the West Indies and the USA.

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar wins a recall despite not having played a T20I since the last T20 World Cup on Australian soil in 2022, while Marcus Stoinis, Tim David and Cameron Green join Glenn Maxwell in the final squad as all-rounder options.

Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, with his promotion to full-time T20I confirmed by Australia alongside the squad announcement.

A lookback at the T20 World Cup Final 2021

Selection chair George Bailey believes Australia have a well-balanced squad and is confident of a strong showing in the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup.

“This is an experienced squad with extensive World Cup experience that offers a variety of structures and covers the scenarios the panel believes will factor in the West Indies with the unique nature of the venues and our opponents," Bailey said. “It’s great to have Ashton Agar back into the squad following a spate of unfortunate and untimely injuries.   “We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh in complementing our front-line attack options.  “The batting options available allow a tailored approach to each venue and opponent.”

Bailey noted that the squad size of 15 left many in-form players unlucky to miss selection.

“Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett were all part of long conversations, along with several others, including Jake Fraser-McGurk who is yet to play T20 International cricket but continues to impress and is developing rapidly," Bailey said. “Being constrained to a squad of 15 for World Cups is always a challenge given the different scenarios and options we’d like to cover.   “We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we need to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming month in accordance with ICC regulations.   “Ultimately the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign.”

While Marsh has been performing the role as interim captain of Australia's T20I side for much of the last 12 months, the T20 World Cup will be his first major tournament as skipper.

"It's been an immense privilege to play for my country and now an even greater honour to lead the squad to a World Cup," Marsh said,

"We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue in what looks like a wide-open tournament."

Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B fixtures against England, Namibia and Scotland.

All teams are allowed to make changes to their squad until 25 May, after which any alteration will require approval from ICC's Event Technical Committee.

World Cup 2026: Concerns over fans’ U.S. visa wait times – ‘Your window might already be closed’

World Cup

Concerns have been raised with the United States government, including an official meeting in the White House, over fears supporters may be deterred from the 2026 men’s World Cup owing to excessive wait times to process visa applications to visit the country.

The tournament begins in 777 days and it will be at least another 18 months before many countries will be assured of qualification, yet the wait times for U.S. visa interviews in two Mexican cities are already in excess of 800 days, while it is 685 days in the Colombian capital of Bogota.

In a statement to The Athletic , the U.S. Department of State (which oversees international relations) insisted it is determined to reduce wait times but also encouraged supporters in affected countries to start applying for visas now, over two years out from the tournament and with the line-up still unknown.

The 2026 edition of world football’s governing body FIFA ’s flagship tournament will include 48 nations for the first time and will be held in 16 cities in the U.S, Canada and Mexico.

It will also be the first World Cup without an overarching local organising committee, which means FIFA is tasked with pulling everything together, in conjunction with the many layers of stakeholders and bureaucracy across three nations and 16 host cities, each of which have differing levels of private and taxpayer support.

The three host countries also have differing entry criteria for visitors, which has the potential to create visa confusion for fans seeking to follow their team deep into the tournament across multiple borders.

australia world cup tourist visa

Several host cities, including the location for the final — New York/New Jersey — are also concerned about the wait times for visas, and the potential impact on income from tourism during the tournament, but the cities are currently allowing FIFA and the travel industry to lead the conversations with the government. Some of those who have spoken to The Athletic wished to remain anonymous, owing either to sensitivity around discussions or to protect working relationships.

Travis Murphy is the founder of Jetr Global Sports + Entertainment and a former American diplomat who also once ran international government affairs for the NBA .

“My concern is this could be a disaster (in 2026),” he said. “The concerns are absolutely there on the city level. The cities are thinking, ‘They are FIFA, so they must have it under control.’ But when you realise how FIFA worked in the past with previous hosts in Qatar and Russia, it doesn’t necessarily work in the United States.

“We’re just a completely different animal in terms of how our government operates and how we communicate. And frankly, the emphasis that we place on soccer as a sport in our country.

“If this was the Super Bowl, the World Series or the NBA finals, we’d be having a different conversation. Soccer is not the biggest sport in our country. And I think that’s a fundamental lack of understanding by FIFA, perhaps just taking it for granted that it is the case everywhere in the world. But it’s not yet in the United States.”

In recent months, U.S. travel industry representatives and FIFA have raised concerns with the U.S. Department of State and the White House as the respective groups seek to organise how millions of tourists will enter the U.S. during the five-week tournament in June and July 2026. In January 2024, FIFA strengthened its staff in D.C. when it hired Alex Sopko, the former chief of staff for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House, to be its new Director of Government Relations.

In a statement to The Athletic , a FIFA spokesperson said the organisation is working closely with U.S. Government in the planning and preparation for the World Cup, including regular discussions on critical topics such as immigration and visas, and adding it recognises “the urgency of these matters.”

The visa delays ahead of the World Cup were raised in a meeting at the White House on Wednesday, April 17, with senior administration officials in conversation with the United States Travel Association (U.S. Travel).

Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of U.S. Travel, was present in the meeting. He describes visa wait times as a “massive issue” but added: “We came away confident that the White House recognises the significance of the 2026 World Cup and will take concrete steps to streamline aspects of the travel experience for the more than eight million anticipated visitors.”

Freely available data on the website of the Department of Consular affairs details the lengthy wait times currently impacting visitor visas from markets that may be highly relevant during the World Cup, which begins in 778 days.

Forty-one countries, including much of Europe, Japan, South Korea and Australia, are part of a visa waiver programme — ESTA — to enter the United States, which means citizens of these countries can travel without obtaining a visa, so as long as their trip for tourism or business does not exceed 90 days.

However, many people, estimated by U.S. Travel to represent 45 per cent of those who visit the States, do require visas for entry. These documents, called a B1/B2 visa, also require in-person appointments at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to take digital photographs and fingerprints, as well as an interview, in which the candidate must state their intention to return to their home countries and explain their reasons for visiting the United States.

Infantino

Wait times for a visa interview at a U.S. consulate in the Mexican cities of Mexico City and Guadalajara are currently 878 days and 820 days respectively, so an application made today may not be approved before the World Cup begins. In the Colombian capital of Bogota, the current wait time is 685 days, while Panama City is 477 days and Quito in Ecuador is 420.

The 2026 World Cup is guaranteed to include the U.S, Mexico and Canada as hosts but five more nations may yet qualify from North and Central America, while up to seven may enter from the South American Football Confederation. Wait times are also dramatic in the Turkish city of Istanbul, where it takes 553 days for an appointment, as well as in Morocco, semi-finalists at the World Cup in 2022, where the wait time is 225 days.

In a statement to The Athletic, the state department said: “We encourage prospective FIFA World Cup visitors who will need U.S. visas to apply now – there is no requirement to have purchased event tickets, made hotel reservations, or reserved airline tickets to qualify for a visitor visa.”

Freeman attributes the current visa delays to the shutdown of consular offices during the coronavirus pandemic but also outlines long-standing issues.

“The U.S. is the world’s most desired nation to visit, but our market share is slipping and it’s in a large part due to long visa wait times,” he said. “If you are Colombian and want to come and bring your kids in 2026, your window might already be closed.”

A World Cup is further complicated because many supporters may wait until their nations have secured qualification to organise their trip. For the Americas, this will largely be in winter 2025 — the play-offs may be as late as March 2026 — while nations will only know the cities in which their teams will be competing following the draw, which is usually held eight months out from the tournament.

During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, visitors were able to expedite their entry into the country by applying for a Hayya card, effectively a fan pass for World Cup ticket holders that acted as a visa for the tournament. A repeat pass is not expected to be approved by the U.S, particularly at a time of global tensions both in the Middle East and following Russia ’s invasion of and continued war against Ukraine .

Freeman warned: “The U.S. is not going to change its visa policies in the short term to frankly cater to FIFA. I think where you may see the U.S. adjust some of its approach is in cooperation with Mexico and Canada . So once teams have qualified within the tournament, how do we streamline their ability to cross borders and attend games in other markets later in the tournament? I believe that’s where there will be greater cooperation and some of those discussions are already taking place.”

The answer may simply be additional staff and investment, such as deploying more consular officers at embassies, a method which has helped significantly reduce wait times from Brazil and India over the past year. Congress set aside $50million for the U.S. State Department to “reduce passport backlogs and reduce visa wait times” in a bill signed into law by U.S. President Joe Biden in March but it was not specified how and where the money will be invested.

There is a precedent for visa issues causing delays at major international sporting events in the United States. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who set the African 100metres record of 9.77 seconds in 2021, only received his visa documentation the day before the men’s 100 metres heats began at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon in 2022.

After securing his visa in Kenya, he took a five-hour flight to Qatar, endured a six-hour layover, then a 14-hour flight to Seattle, another three-hour layover and last of all, a one-hour flight to Oregon. He landed at 4.15 pm and immediately went to the track, where the heats commenced at 6.50pm.

The sprinter said: “If you are hosting a championship, you need to waive (visa requirements) for athletes. It’s a lesson for the host country in the future, and the U.S. is hosting the Olympics in 2028 (in Los Angeles), so they need to learn from this and do better next time.”

Murphy added: “There were hundreds of athletes who were unable to travel. The World Athletics Championships was was a relatively small event compared to the magnitude of what we’re talking about with the 48-team World Cup and the millions and millions of people involved, in terms of what needs to happen.”

Playing rosters are usually only approved in the final months before a tournament, but the U.S. is expected to expedite processing to ensure players and support staff from federations are able to arrive in time for the World Cup.

The U.S. Department of State attributes the issues at World Athletics to the pressures felt by consular officers coming out of the pandemic and told The Athletic that wait times for “P-visas”, generally used by members of professional sports teams coming to participate in athletic competitions, are “low worldwide”.

Murphy said the National Security Council has established a working committee on the matter for the White House but caveated his optimism with a reminder that more instant priorities are Israel, Gaza and Ukraine. He said: “This is not a priority beyond the host cities, FIFA itself and the members of Congress who represent those host cities. But in terms of there being a broad approach that is all-encompassing and has a wide swath of support in Congress, there’s just nothing there. There’s no bills or initiatives in Congress that are focused on this.”

He added: “The conversations that needed to have started a year plus ago are not at a point where they need to be. And when you’re talking about the U.S. Government, it is essentially at a state of standstill in terms of any major movement that needs to happen from now until November of this year (when there is a Presidential election).”

The Department of State insisted it is “committed to facilitating legitimate travel to the United States while maintaining high national security standards.”

Its statement continued: “We are pleased to be an active participant in a working group with FIFA and other stakeholders on plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Bureau of Consular Affairs recognizes the importance of international inbound tourism, including for mega sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, and is working tirelessly to facilitate secure travel to the United States. We have significantly reduced visa wait times over the past two years.”

One of the peculiarities of the U.S. political system is that there is no sports ministry to facilitate such discussions. In its absence, Murphy calls for a special envoy to be appointed, with the World Cup likely to be followed by the women’s edition in 2027 before the Olympics in LA in 2028.

He said: “There has to be somebody centralised to organise those conversations. That’s relatively easy to do. If it’s somebody that has the respect and attention of the cabinet agencies, they can have a conversation with Capitol Hill and that’s going to go a long way to getting things done.”
