This tour was one of the most epic trips I've ever done. The dive and snorkeling day trip was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my life.

What people love about Brisbane Tours

Amazing time, had an absolute blast! I will 100% be doing another tour. Val was a great tour guide, and helped me with every question I had.
The trip was great. However, I didn’t like the hostel in Airlie Beach. It was the worst one in this trip. Overall was great
As far as tours go, it's great to have others to enjoy with. Wake Up was a nice hostel with a great breakfast included the first day. That day I chose to take the ferry to Manly where our tour guide Georgia showed us shopping, the beach, and this great acai bowl restaurant. From Sydney we took the 9 hour train ride to surf x camp in arrawara. The teepee I slept in was so cool. The surf lesson was great...but we only had less than 1 hour surfing in the water, if we wanted more we had to pay more, in the afternoon we went for a walk along the beach with some local indiginous people to learn about the plants of the area and try some, we stopped at the campground to find kangaroo. The food at surf X was good. surf x still hasn't sent us the link for the surfing photos though. Byron Bay is a great surf town, although I didn't surf Wake Up had free surfboards available...I had purchased the option to kayak with dolphins and didn't feel like surfing after that. the town had lots of little shops and restaurants and a walk to the lighthouse and furthest easterly point in Australia. The next day we went to Brisbane, after a koala bushwalk where we didn't see koala. In Brisbane check out Southbank and Queen street after dark.

INTRO Travel

"The Oz east coast trip with Intro is an amazing way to explore the entire east coast trip fast! It is well organised and as described, with the option to do extra activities along the way too. My leader was Molly who has fantastic. She got the group to each destination safe and sound, without any hassle, and with lots of laughs! She also was extremely knowledgeable about each destination we went to and about the general Aussie culture. She was extremely approachable to any queries that you had and gave me lots of tips and advice for working in OZ after! It is also a great way to make lifelong friends and travel safely. I would definitely recommend. I would also suggest bringing a suitcase or wheely backpack as it is much easier to travel with. 😊

"I really liked the itinerary, it was varied with some active days like the hike to Hells gate and back. Other days we could do our own thing which was great. Most of the hostels were to be expected, however the one in Airlie Beach was awfully dirty and lacking basic things such as lockers and safes. Apart from that, I enjoyed the trip!

Brisbane city skyline and Brisbane river viewing from Kangaroo Point, Queensland at sunset

Welcome to Queensland’s sunny capital, where big city life and laid-back vibes collide

Brisbane might be a big city, but it has a big-town atmosphere. Ferries ply the waters of the Brisbane River, the beach is less than an hour away by car (or 5 minutes if you go to South Bank) and the sub-tropical weather lends itself to some pretty magical sunsets. Brisbane is a launching pad for adventures in Noosa , Fraser Island , the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef , but there's plenty to keep you entertained in the city. Discover fine art at one of the many galleries, uncover its thriving dining scene, or connect with Country on a First Nations cultural experience .

Brisbane travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Brisbane?

Brisbane Airport is well-connected with direct flights to 29 international and over 40 domestic destinations. The CBD is located just 10 miles from the airport and is easy to get to on the train, bus or in a rideshare/taxi.

Getting around Brisbane

If you don't have far to go, it's easy to walk around Brisbane's CBD as it's almost completely flat. If you want to travel further afield, you can rent a car or catch a bus, ferry or train. Brisbane also has an excellent network of bikeways and a public bike hire scheme if you want to be active.

When is the best time to visit Brisbane?

With a subtropical climate, any time of year is a good time to visit Brisbane. The weather is hot for the majority of the year, but there is some seasonal variation.

Summer is hot, humid and wet, which calls for swimming in the city lagoon and cool drinks on rooftop bars.

Spring and autumn are slightly cooler and dry, so the weather is near perfect for most activities.

Winter is the coolest time of year, but daytime temperatures are still warm, and with clear skies and minimal rain, it's a great time of year to go hiking or cycling.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

What should I pack for Brisbane?

Brisbane is a laid-back destination and smart casual is the most common style of dress for a night out unless you're planning on hitting the clubs in Fortitude Valley. It's pleasantly warm throughout the year, although it can get cool in the evening so bring a lightweight sweater just in case.

Bring swimwear as well as you may like to go swimming, even in winter. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must all year as sunshine is plentiful.

What is internet access like in Brisbane?

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland so there's good wi-fi coverage in cafes, bars and restaurants in town and the surrounding area. Free wi-fi is available in the Queen Street Mall, State Library of Queensland and on most trains and ferry services.

Can I use my mobile phone in Brisbane?

There's good mobile phone coverage in town and the surrounding area. However, you may have patchy signal when you're on the road or in nearby national parks.

What is the weather like in Brisbane?

Brisbane is known for having reasonably good weather all year round with tourists flocking to the state to enjoy warm year-round temperatures and plentiful sunshine.

It never gets super cold in Brisbane, with average lows dropping to a mild 48°F or 50°F in July, the coolest month of the year. At the height of summer in January and February, overnight temperatures only drop to 72°F.

The 5 Best Brisbane River Cruise Tours [2024 Reviews]

It’s no secret that Australia is bursting at the seams with adventure and excitement, but there are plenty of serene opportunities that lie within its natural landscapes.

If you’re in Brisbane and want an excursion that will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, offering lush riverside scenery and amazing skyline views, you’re in for a real treat.

Going on a Brisbane river cruise is one of the best activities you can partake in, and it’s great for people of any age or background! I’ve carefully curated this guide with the 5 top Brisbane river cruises available that are well worth your time and money. Let’s get started!

Best Brisbane River Cruises

Quick answer: the 5 best rated brisbane river cruise tours for 2024.

  • Brisbane River Cruise with Entry to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
  • 90min Brisbane River Cruise/Tour
  • Sunset River Cruise
  • Brisbane River Cruise
  • City Lights Dinner Cruise in Brisbane with Dinner

Brisbane River Cruise Tour Reviews

1. brisbane river cruise with entry to lone pine koala sanctuary.

  • Duration: 5.5 hours
  • Departure: Cultural Centre Boardwalk, South Brisbane QLD 4101
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  Round-trip cruise, general admission into Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

There’s no way you can explore Brisbane without taking advantage of the amazing flora and fauna that awaits. With the Brisbane River Cruise with Entry to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary , it combines both seamlessly, offering a fun and educational adventure.

I know it sounds a bit cliche, but I’ve always wanted to see koalas in real life, and was so excited that I was able to on this tour!

We started out by meeting with our guide at the Cultural Centre Boardwalk in the morning, where he greeted us and offered us a briefing of what to expect for the morning and afternoon.

We then boarded our vessel, which was a clean and comfortable boat that offered plenty of food and drinks for purchase (the pastries in particular are a must-try).

The cruise was quite leisurely and relaxing, offering amazing views of the city skyline and iconic landmarks like the Story Bridge and South Park Parklands.

As we cruised along, our guide did a fantastic job at offering interesting commentary, including historical and cultural knowledge, as well as some funny anecdotes.

Expand To See More See Less

After about an hour on the boat, we arrived at the Lone Pine Koala Sancturary, which is nearly 100 years old! We learned that it’s used today as a refuge for ill, injured, and orphaned koalas who cannot support themselves in the wild.

Back when it opened in 1927, it was a time where koalas were in grave danger of being culled for the fur trade, but it’s still very important to have around today.

The sanctuary itself is quite beautiful, as a haven of natural beauty, with plenty of shade provided by the eucalyptus trees, where these furry little guys laze in the branches above.

It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the importance ofkeeping them safe with a wide range of exhibits, learning not only about the cute marsupials, but the local birds of prey, too.

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 10:30 AM, 12:30 & 2:30 PM
  • Includes:  1.5-hour Sight Seeing Cruise, Live commentary, Morning Tea (10:30am cruise), Souvenir Map of Brisbane City

If you already have a packed itinerary and are looking for the opportunity to add in something a bit more relaxing in Mother Nature, this next tour should be up for consideration.

90min Brisbane River Cruise/Tour  is a fantastic way to get a lay of the land (and water?) in a way that allows you to experience the allure of Brisbane in a rather compact journey.

With great customer service and excellent organization, it’s one of my top recommendations if you’ve just arrived in the city and want to see and learn a lot, quickly.

With many different start times available throughout the morning and afternoon, it’s that much easier to fit into a busy schedule. Arrive at the boardwalk at least 10 minutes before your cruise time, stepping aboard the sleek vessels to be greeted by the friendly staff.

I’d be willing to say that the staff won’t above and beyond to make us feel welcome, ensuring a fantastic experience for everyone.

As soon as we all got settled in, they provided us with some delicious scones to accompany our morning tea to enjoy as we soaked in the beautiful views on the river.

The captain was very funny and did a great job at making everything interesting, regaling us with anecdotes and historical background on each site.

Taking the tour for me was incredibly useful in getting to know Brisbane fast, and I made sure to explore certain places further after them catching my interest while on the river.

Southbank beaches and lagoons, Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, bridges, etc. were all interesting to see from this perspective, and made me realize just how interesting Brisbane really is. If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing cruise that isn’t crowded or noisy, definitely consider this one.

It’s a wonderful way to start out any morning in this lovely city, and even more so with such wonderful hosts.

3. Brisbane Sunset River Cruise

  • Departure Time: 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  In-person guide, restroom on board

As the sun starts to set, Brisbane becomes a city of shimmering lights with a charming glow and vibe to it. There’s no better way to experience an evening in Brisbane than with the Sunset River Cruise tour .

If you’re looking for a romantic evening activity that doesn’t involve going to a restaurant or don’t want to deal with a fully-guided tour, this is just the ticket.

However, don’t think that it’s just ideal for couples – it’s also perfect for solo travelers, as well as friend groups or entire families. I found it was a great way to meet fellow travelers, as it kind of had a lighthearted, nighttime experience.

If you have an evening free and would also like to learn a bit more about the history and cultural background of Brisbane, this is it.

As we relaxed and cruised along the tranquil waters, I watched as the lights reflected off the river and sipped on some delicious beer while listening to the captain.

Seeing Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point’s cliffs looked so different at night, taking on a new kind of charm under the allure of darkness. The food was also quite tasty, serving as a nice precursor to going out to eat at a restaurant, if that’s on your itinerary.

The canapes and snacks were nice and varied, from salty/savory delights to sweet treats, there’s something for everyone.

With plenty of comfortable seating, restaurants onboard, and other amenities, it’s also a quite nice place to spend some time. Oh, and then take into consideration the ultra-inexpensive price, and you seriously can’t go wrong here.

4. Brisbane River Cruise 12.30pm

  • Duration:  1.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 12:30 PM
  • Includes:  1.5-hour sightseeing cruise, live commentary, souvenir map of Brisbane city, access to the onboard coffee shop/licensed bar

Are you someone who doesn’t want to get up early in the morning to head out to a tour, or perhaps want to break up a busy day with a bit of relaxation and comfort?

If that sounds like you at all, go ahead and check out the Brisbane River Cruise 12.30pm experience . Instead of going out to lunch, this tour is a great alternative to have some tasty food, refreshing drinks, and a pretty tour in the sunshine.

I really find this tour to be ideal for anyone of any age, activity level, background, etcetera., as it’s a very welcoming experience.

You’ll set off on a journey along the winding waters of the river, which is one of the coolest activities to partake in during the summertime. You’ll get to kick back, let the stress melt away, and appreciate the beauty of Brisbane’s stunning skyline with great company.

We started out from the South Bank, all the way through the city under the Story Bridge, until Breakfast Creek – I got to know the city quite well!

Something I will mention, is that if you’re interested in unique suburban architecture, this is the cruise for you. I took some incredible photos and videos as we cruised along, and as there weren’t too many people on board, didn’t have to worry about my view getting interrupted.

The entertaining live commentary only enriched the experience further, and I purchased a coffee and snack from their onboard bar/cafe to enjoy as I listened.

They thoughtfully provided us with a complimentary gift of a Brisbane city map, as well as some discounts for other activities throughout the city. Overall, it was another really affordable, fun activity that I highly recommend.

5. City Lights Dinner Cruise in Brisbane with Dinner

  • Includes:  Dinner, restroom on board, snacks

This is truly one of the most magical tours I’ve been on in Brisbane, and if you’re looking to indulge in an evening of tasty food and drink, check this one out.

With amazing stunning views of the glowing water, the City Lights Dinner Cruise in Brisbane with Dinner  is one to impress. Instead of going to dinner at a nice restaurant, try this sophisticated, relaxing experience that you’re sure to want to repeat.

Starting out at 6pm, you’ll head to the boardwalk to meet the captain and crew, where you’ll be escorted onboard the clean and upscale vessel. The staff on this boat is undoubtedly one of the best of any I’ve encountered, answering any questions we had with a sense of expertise.

The seating was nice and comfortable, with each table offering a great view of the river, city skyline, and other interesting sites.

It was surprising that this tour was only 1.5 hours, as I simply learned so much about Brisbane’s history and culture, and experienced so many different stories and forms of entertainment.

I enjoyed the included snacks and drinks while listening to music, with undoubtedly one of the most impressive Australian city backgrounds. The luxurious buffet dinner followed up the snacks, which was very substantial and the quality of a nice dinner.

I also appreciated the full bar on our boat, which made the tour even more cost effective – perfect for those who are on a tight budget but want to really learn about Brisbane. Using locally-sourced ingredients, everything tasted very fresh, and I felt represented the local foodie scene quite well.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking to make a memorable night out, this is the tour for you!

Brisbane Day Trip #2 – Travel The Southern Moreton Bay Tourist Drive

Are you looking for a delightful day trip by car where you can discover new things around each corner? This journey will appeal to lovers of history, nature, arts and culture, fresh food and wine alike, with ample opportunities to learn, dine and unwind amid some of the best scenery southeast Queensland has to offer.

Discover the rich local history by uncovering the region’s heritage trails and visit iconic locations such as the Old Cleveland Lighthouse (1864). Tour the  Sirromet Winery , a family-owned winery at the scenic Mount Cotton which has collected more than 900 esteemed national and international awards for its exquisite wines. Explore markets overflowing with local produce and crafts from local artisans. Relax on Queen Beach, Margate Beach or Suttons Beach, and enjoy Wellington Point’s iconic Moreton Bay fig trees. Brisbane Day Trip #3 – Beach Hop On The Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its beautiful pristine coastline, which stretches for more than 50 kilometres. Bask in a gorgeous sunrise or sunset, breathe in the fresh, crisp air of the Pacific Ocean, and feel the pure white sand between your toes.

If you’re keen on casting a line, Coolum and Noosa are home to many quality fishing destinations due to their beaches, rocky headlands and waterways. Noosa River is abundant with bream, tailor, flathead, ocean fish, mangrove jack and sand whiting, while Noosa Heads is popular with anglers seeking to catch bream and jewfish. For natural beauty, you can’t beat Noosa National Park, a wedge of rugged coastline jutting into the Pacific Ocean and a wildlife sanctuary protecting beautiful stretches of eucalypt forest, melaleuca wetland, heathland and dense rainforest. Whale enthusiasts will love Coolum’s Point Perry, which provides one of the best lookouts on the Sunshine Coast to watch humpback whales arrive during their migration season. If you love eating and shopping, we recommend exploring Noosa Heads and the glamorous Mooloolaba Esplanade, where you can dine at stylish alfresco and fresh seafood restaurants and trendy cafes, and shop at designer fashion boutiques.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The Best Walking Tours in Bologna

A quiet street in sunny Bologna, Italy while taking a walking tour

Located in Northern Italy, Bologna is considered one of the food capitals of Italy . And given Italy’s culinary reputation, that must be saying something.

Food is what draws most visitors here ( it’s what drew me there ). I had heard it’s the place for foodies in Italy and I was not disappointed.

Unsurprisingly, there are lots of amazing food tours here that allow you to eat your way around town while learning about the region’s traditional cuisine. There are also wine tours galore plus plenty of history-oriented tours to ensure you learn about this food-centric city’s past.

In short, Bologna is the perfect place to take a walking tour. And, since I love walking tours of all kind, I took a bunch while I was in town. Some were great, some were ok, some where terrible . Here’s the best walking tours I took in Bologna to help you plan your visit:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

Take Walks is my go-to tour company in Italy, offering access to places that no other gets and featuring incredibly knowledgeable guides. I always have fun and learn a lot on these tours. I can’t recommend them enough.

Their Tastes & Traditions tour lasts 3.5 hours and includes nine mouth-watering offerings (plus coffee and wine). You’ll get to visit markets, sample artisan fare, and learn all about traditional cuisine. If you only do one tour here, make it this one.

Best Free Tour

Lisbon chill-out tour yellow logo

Free Walking Tour Bologna

Offered daily, this is the best (and most popular) free tour in town and a good introduction to Bologna. It lasts two hours and covers all the highlights, including Piazza Nettuno, the Jewish Ghetto, Piazza Maggiore, and more. It’s informative without being boring and perfect primer for first-time visitors. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!

While those are my favorite paid and free tour operators in town, Bologna as a lot more to offer walking tour companies. Here are three other companies I like a lot:

1. Do Eat Better

If you’ve still got an appetite, join Do Eat Better’s Traditional Food Tour . Led by an expert local guide, this 3.5-hour tour makes stops at four hand-picked eateries, where you can try fresh pasta, artisanal ice cream, locally sourced meats, and more (you’ll definitely leave full). I especially like that you not only get to try some amazing traditional food but get off the tourist trail and beat the crowds. It’s a must-do tour for foodies.

Tours start at 90 EUR.

Book here!

2. Bologna Wine

If you’re like me and love vino, you’re going to want to book this guided wine tour . It’s led by a sommelier and features a wide variety of wines from around Bologna. You’ll visit lesser-known spots, try some unique vintages, and develop a deeper appreciation for the region’s wines. You’ll also get to stop at the city’s oldest tavern, which I think is really neat. Tours last 2-3 hours (depending on which you book) and include 2-5 glasses of wine (again, depending on the tour). The guides really know their stuff, so you’ll learn a ton on this tour.

Tours start at 69 EUR.

3. Travelhoo

To burn off all the amazing food you’ve been enjoying, take a guided bike tour with Travelhoo. Over the course of 2.5 hours, you’ll learn about Bologna’s long history and visit its main sights, such as Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica of San Petronio, and the Neptune Fountain. It’s a solid introduction to the city and how it came to be the food and wine hub that it is today.

While this is an active tour, the guide leads you at a leisurely pace, so you don’t need to be super fit to enjoy it.

Tours start at 75 EUR.

Bologna may not get the attention that Rome or Venice do, but when it comes to food, it holds its own. Take one of the walking tours above and learn about its history and culture and feast on the amazing eats that have put the city on the map for centuries!

And while these are my favourite tours in the city, the website GetYourGuide has lots more options so check them out if you’re looking for additional tours!

Jennifer Lopez deal for $1M-per-show Las Vegas residency in jeopardy as new album, concert tour flop: source

J ennifer Lopez was recently in talks for a $90 million Las Vegas residency — but the blockbuster deal now looks shaky at best as her new album and upcoming concert tour are flopping badly, The Post has learned.

The embattled pop diva — whose headline-grabbing marriage to Ben Affleck is reportedly crumbling — recently had been in talks with MGM Grand on a guaranteed $1 million a show for 90 dates starting next year, a source close to the situation told The Post.

But casino executives have lately grown skittish over abysmal ticket sales for her first tour in five years following the release of her “This is Me … Now” album in February — with poor demand having forced the cancellation of seven shows this summer, the source said.

No Vegas deal has yet to be announced. That’s despite a report from The Mirror on Feb. 2 that MGM had teamed up with Live Nation to offer more than $800,000 a show.

Rival casino Resorts World upped the bidding to $875,000 per show in partnership with Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) soon after, sources said.

MGM and Live Nation then swooped in with the $1 million-a-show offer for the “Let’s Get Loud” singer — but buyer’s remorse has lately set in, the first source said.

“MGM is watching her not doing well on the road. They are very nervous,” the person said. “It’s pretty rare you have a poor tour and then go to Vegas.”

Now, the Bronx-born star could be looking at a significant haircut to the $90 million windfall. A Lopez residency should fetch just $600,000 to $650,000 and be for fewer shows, the source said.

Another source with knowledge of the MGM talks said no deal was ever signed, but discussions have continued.

Reps for Lopez and MGM did not comment.

The latest album was the worst selling of Lopez’s career and a companion film on Amazon Prime Video was panned. Ticket sales for the concert, which kicks off next month, are poor and her love affair with Affleck is apparently on the rocks.

The couple has rarely been seen together in recent weeks and he failed to show up for the premiere of her new film “Atlas,” which debuted on Netflix on Friday — and which The Post gave a one-star review.

MGM brass are worried about Lopez’s fading star power and whether she’ll be able to fill its 5,200-seat Park Theater to justify the massive financial commitment, the source said.

Lopez is having trouble filling the 19,500-seat T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the tour stop on July 20, with a third of the high-priced floor tickets and plenty of cheaper options — some as low as $65 — still available, Ticketmaster shows .

Seven tour dates in cities including Atlanta, New Orleans and Houston were scrapped, Variety reported .

The Live Nation-produced tour concludes Aug. 17 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and the residency was expected to begin about six months after the tour ended, the first source said.

J.Lo and her manager Benny Medina began shopping for a Vegas venue before the singer dropped her new album and a companion film on Feb. 16, the source said.

Lopez was a good bet for a casino in the past. Caesars paid her about a guaranteed $500,000 a show for a Planet Hollywood residency that ran for 120 shows between 2016 and 2018.

It grossed $101.9 million, making it the sixth highest Las Vegas residency of all time, and the top residency by a Latin artist, according to Billboard .

MGM is paying Mariah Carey just $500,000 a show for her current residency. Giving Lopez twice that amount would put her in the same ballpark as recently signed deals for Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga.

Adele got a record-breaking $2 million a show at Caesars Palace, The Post reported exclusively last year.

Five things to know: Hamilton Golf and Country Club

Need to Know

Hamilton Golf and Country Club, one of Canada’s top-ranked facilities, will host the RBC Canadian Open for the seventh time this week.

But the course will look very different than when the PGA TOUR was last here in 2019. Not long after Rory McIlroy’s dominant win five years ago, the club underwent a nearly $8.5-million restoration under world-renowned architect Martin Ebert.

Hamilton commissioned Ebert’s firm – which also advises on eight of the 10 venues in The Open rota, including this year’s host, Royal Troon – in 2014 to give the club a throwback look to its original Harry Colt design. Having spent time at Pine Valley in 1913, Colt came to Hamilton a year later. The official club opening was in 1916.

Ebert and design partner Tom Mackenzie had never done a restoration effort like the one at Hamilton. Most of the work was overseen from afar due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions, but it worked.

Golf Digest named Ebert’s work on Hamilton the "Best Renovation" of the year in January 2023.

“Harry Colt is one of the world’s greatest – if not the greatest – architects so having one of his rare North American golf courses is a keystone element of what makes Hamilton special,” said Andrew Harvie, an authority in Canadian golf architecture and founder of Beyond the Contour. “In technical terms, the routing is brilliant, with the layout largely routed in triangles around the hilly property with the Ancaster Creek on the bottom.

“How the layout handles the severity of the property while giving players fresh looks and strategies on every tee is a clinic in routing.”

With the RBC Canadian Open returning to Hamilton – before heading to TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in 2025, a debut venue – here’s everything else you need to know about the iconic Canadian club.

It's the same but different

Hamilton’s membership voted in favor to proceed with a Golf Course Improvement Plan Project about a month before McIlroy’s seven-shot triumph at the RBC Canadian Open in 2019. The plan included reconstructing tees, bunkers and greens on all 27 holes (the West/South PGA TOUR layout along with the East). There would also be a new irrigation system, practice putting green and new practice area.

“The players want to enjoy the experience of playing the golf course so that’s a big component of (an event’s success) and the amazing thing is that it was really well received, and it was fantastic before,” tournament director Bryan Crawford said. “The fact that it’s gotten even better – it’s almost unthinkable that it could have gotten better than it already was.”

Ebert said Hamilton’s topography was always its distinguishing factor.

A view of the first hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

A view of the first hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

“The impressive nature of the terrain, that was the key thing,” he said. “Whether it’s a new piece of land or an existing course, how many times do you stand on a tee and have your breath taken away? That’s pretty regular at Hamilton. That was one of the first takeaways.”

A legend still called the shots

Although Colt only came to Hamilton once, Ebert said he and his team wanted to “pay as much respect” to Colt as possible. The club had all the old plans, with descriptions of the bunkers, which Ebert called “so important” to the appearance of courses and specific holes.

“I was really pleased how they worked out,” Ebert said, “especially given our restrictions on travelling and not being able to get there during any of the construction. That was a real positive for me.”

The club’s original set of 1914 drawings from Colt included ragged edges, additional depth and “fescue eyebrows” near the bunkers, which players will see once again. SCOREGolf.com reported in 2021 – when the course first re-opened – that Ebert compared Hamilton’s bunker renovation to the recent work he did at Royal Portrush.

Tech provided COVID-19 workaround

Ebert was expected to make about 12 visits to Hamilton for the project but those were all cancelled due to the pandemic. Drone technology, 3D video and even virtual reality allowed him and his team to review the progress, finalize approvals and make changes remotely.

He finally saw the course in person in September 2021.

“It would have been far better to review our design and the contractor work on the ground, there’s no doubt about that,” Ebert said. “But we couldn’t. As a result of the techniques we developed during COVID, and since our detailed plans give so much information to the contractor, we had the confidence we could still pull it off to an extremely high standard.”

He admits it took one hole (the fourth) to really settle in on a process for the contractor and Ebert, but they got rolling quickly after the virtual back-and-forth style was agreed upon.

“It was a challenge, but we weren’t petrified because we do really concise levels (of planning),” Ebert said. “Having the VR headset and 3D camera was so instrumental with the bunker shape, bunker depth and green surrounds. It was exciting to develop those innovative techniques and we’ve used them in other projects like doing bunkers in Chile.

“Doing Hamilton with those techniques taught us a lot.”

Even the toughest holes got longer

The golf course will play 112 yards longer than it did in 2019. The par-3 sixth, the second-most difficult hole at the 2019 RBC Canadian Open, will play 25 yards longer. The par-4 seventh (new back tee) will play 35 yards longer.

A view of the sixth hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

A view of the sixth hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

The par-4 11th hole (21 additional yards) and par-4 14th (24) will require additional pop, as will the par-5 17th, which now measures 580 yards (30 yards longer with an entirely new green site that has been pushed back and to the left), and the par-4 18th (the hardest hole during the 2019 Canadian Open got an additional 11 yards).

Ebert said he’s hopeful the course will demand more precise ball-striking. The new greens will have more areas for pin positions and the bunkering will force players to think their way around the course.

The objective of the renovation, according to Harvie, was to create a cohesive version of the course, which had received numerous tweaks by numerous architects over the generations.

“In the renovation, they addressed all these,” he said. “Trees are out to allow some rediscovered views across the tumbling property, while mow lines are back expanded out, and greens and bunkers are uniform and consistent across the entire property.”

'The Rink' returns

A smiling Ebert said he never could have imagined that one of the holes on a course he’s worked on would be wrapped in hockey boards. But "The Rink" (in its sixth year) will make another appearance at Hamilton.

The par-3 14th hole will have the hockey-inspired atmosphere, complete with an organist, which is new this year. Ebert, who was in Hamilton for the 2019 Canadian Open, called it a “brilliant atmosphere” at The Rink.

A view of the 14th hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

A view of the 14th hole at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. (Courtesy Hamilton Golf and Country Club)

“When players were coming on to the tee – that was fantastic,” he said. “I really, really did enjoy that. I’m not sure it’ll happen at The Open. But even there, they want a good par 3 to excite the crowds. But nothing quite as intense as a cauldron of atmosphere like we’ll have with the hockey hole.”

“It's a marquee hole for us,” added Crawford. “It allows for us to bring it tournament to tournament when we go to different venues. I don’t think anybody could have dreamed when that idea was brought forward that it would have grown to what it is today.”

A survivor's guide to Taylor Swift floor tickets: Lessons from an Eras Tour veteran

brisbane tours best

STOCKHOLM — Thousands of fans line up each morning ahead of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows hoping to get one of the coveted spots on the open, first-come, first-served arena floor.

In America, fans buy designated seats. Abroad, the floor is like a Southwest flight. There are no assigned seats, and those with VIP tickets nab the best spots since they are let into the arena an hour early.

Unless fans have VIP tickets, they'll probably end up in the mid-to-back sections of the floor, no matter how early they line up. After getting two floor tickets to two shows — one in Paris and one in Sweden — here are my tips for navigating the magic and madness of the ground level.

Like we were in Paris

An hour before Swift's last show in Paris, I and a friend of mine made a last-minute decision to buy $150 floor tickets off StubHub. We went to the arena 10 minutes before the opening act, Paramore, took the stage. At intermission, we stood by the VIP tent. I was able to say hi to "Grey’s Anatomy" star Jessica Capshaw . Twenty feet away, singer Christina Milian sat in a director's chair.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Up above fans noticed Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce , his best friend Ross Travis, actor Bradley Cooper, supermodel Gigi Hadid and rock star Lenny Kravitz in a suite. I could understand why Kelce was in a box. The chaos of fans zooming in on their phone cameras to get grainy shots of his every reaction and waving arm dance moves was nonstop. But I get it, I got one for Instagram when Swift punctuated her 87th — his jersey number — show with a mashup of love songs including one that he inspired: “The Alchemy,” “Treacherous,” “Begin Again” and “Paris.”

Walking along the back rim of the floor and following Swift as she performed from different parts of the massive catwalk, I felt carefree and untethered. It was liberating not to fear losing a spot. Several fans danced in the less congested area similar to the thousands who danced in theater aisles during the blockbuster release of the concert movie.

Predicting Kelce would come down near the stage during “Karma,” I walked over to the guardrail and waved during the “Midnights” song. He and Swift took a different exit than her dancers, singers and bandmates. My friend had been to the Eras Tour a few times before and said that was his favorite show.

It’s nice to have a friend

In Sweden, I bought a floor seat on the right side of the stage. Hoping to get a closer spot, I camped out. The long wait created a mini community that exchanged friendship bracelets and the latest clown theories while posting videos to Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok. My favorite costumes in the Y entrance line were two Reputation clowns wearing scaly dresses and snaky blue boas paired with bright-red clown wigs that made everyone smile. (The joke is Swifties incessantly “clown” the singer will announce the rerelease of her sixth album and she has yet to.)

The shade from Friends Arena blocked the Swedish sun with temperatures in the 70s. The less-than-long merch lines allowed fans to save each other’s spaces to buy $75 hoodies and $45 T-shirts.

With no bags allowed in the arena , fans filled their pockets with only essentials like external battery chargers, wallets, passports and chapsticks.

Patient line waiters drank water early. Two Finnish fans by me said they stopped hydrating a couple hours before doors opened for fear of getting a good place and having to use the restroom.

Thousands of VIP fans entered an hour early, and any hope of getting a stage-side dominion was lost for general admission.

I staked a claim near the railing on the side of the stage base (by the corner of the back screen). Guitarist Paul Sidoti threw guitar picks to fans. Back-up vocalists Kamilah Marshall and Eliotte Woodford waved to admirers between running backstage for wardrobe changes and joining Swift center-stage. Pianist Karina DePiano stayed at the keys the whole concert but danced and sang to every tune. The other bandmates and vocalists were on the opposite, left corner.

Security guards who bordered the stage between the fan barricade and catwalk had stacks of cups and multiple, liter-sized water bottles. They frequently asked if anyone needed hydration. Around the “1989” set two-thirds of the way into the show, Swifties took the guards up on the offer.

At least four times on Swift's third night in Stockholm, fans were escorted by a guard along the stage to an area where they would get medical attention. One of the four was carried by a guard who asked his cohorts to get the girl water. Outside, the night chill hovered at 54 degrees and inside the arena’s temperature was tepid at best.

Several water stations on the floor included disposable cups with multiple faucets over a bathtub where fans could fill up.

At one point during the acoustic set, Swift paused to ask fans , “Someone in the front row, can you tell me yes or no to this question: When you guys are putting a bunch of flashlights up in a group, does that mean people need help?”

More: Taylor Swift pauses acoustic set of Stockholm Eras Tour show to check on fans

Best seat in the house?

There are advantages to each section of the floor. The diamond part of the stage is the premier spot for the most close interactions with Swift. It gets the rising platform, smoke shooters and bulk of the performances.

The two base corners by the back screen and the catwalk between the back screen and diamond allow fans to see “The Man” set, “Folklore” cottage and famous “Enchanted” look back as Swift exits the “Speak Now” era. It’s also the space where most entrances and exits happen.

The far end of the catwalk is where the “22" hat is given out, where “Love Story” culminates as flashing lights shoot across the entire arena and where Swift begins “The Tortured Poets Department” era with “But Daddy I Love Him.”

After being to multiple shows, I would vie for a seat looking directly at the stage, perpendicular to the back screen. You get the chance to give your legs and back a rest between eras. You have a designated spot, and you can see the entire show including animations.

The open floor offers two options. For the VIP ticket holder, you get a front row vantage of the record-breaking show along with the best photo and video opportunities. But if you’re not in VIP and on the floor, succumb to not getting the best media and dance in your best dress, fearless.
