5 Things To Know About Gucci Cruise 2020

By Anders Christian Madsen

The latest stop on Gucci’s ongoing exploration of the places close to Alessandro Michele’s work – and heart – took its Cruise 2020 show to his native Rome.

The show took place at the Capitoline Museums in Rome

A cornerstone in Alessandro Michele’s vision for Gucci is his conversation between the present and the past. Few locations could have created a better frame for it than the eternal city of Rome – where he lives and works – and the Capitoline Museums, the oldest in the world, which overlooks the Forum. In 1471, Pope Sixtus IV returned three ancient bronze statues and the remains of the Colossus of Constantine to Rome. They were put on display on the Capitoline Hill for all its citizens to see, and the rest is history. In 1734, the building complex officially opened as a museum housing some of the most fabled treasures of Ancient Rome. Michele – who used to visit the museum on weekends as a child – sent his models through its nearly blackened-out ballrooms, covering them in a frenzy of flashlights (provided by Gucci on every seat) to a ceremonious and rather ominous choir medley. “My work sometimes is like being an archaeologist. I discover things. Using a torch to discover things that hide in the darkness,” Michele said after the show. “I came to this museum with my father because I didn’t like football and amusement parks. I was obsessed with archaeology and that hasn’t changed.”

The collection revolved around freedom of choice

Alessandro Michele didn’t turn the volume down on the sensory overload that defines his work, forever sampling and remixing impressions from virtually every era and movement from Adam and Eve to Adam and Steve. But within his magpie sea of Ancient Roman tunics, togas and pallas, Vatican-esque nun’s habits, and Mickey Mouse motifs, this collection was carried by a message of freedom. “It was really important to organise this show in Rome in a time when it’s important to glorify this place that is a place of freedom. All the beautiful things surrounding us from the pagan world are connected to a freedom that has sometimes been threatened. I tried to place all the characters of my movie in the best possible surroundings where they are allowed to be free,” Michele said.

Prochoice motifs featured throughout

Some pieces were adorned with the slogan “My body, my choice” while others featured the date “May 22, 1978” when abortion was legalised in Italy, or were embroidered in the image of female reproductive organs. Following recent events in Alabama – and looming anti-abortion laws in other US states – Michele’s motivation was clear. On the political front, Italy – under PM Giuseppe Conte – is currently echoing some of those populist waves that paved the way for what is happening in America. “The news I recently read in the newspaper made me reflect on the fact that women have to be respected. They should be considered as some men consider themselves,” Michele said. “They should be free to choose what they want. Terminating pregnancy is not going to uproot the flower that’s found in the womb of every woman. Choices are sometimes difficult in life. It’s the most difficult choice for a woman and I respect that choice.”

The experience offered a more intimate glimpse into the mind of Alessandro Michele

If you have followed Alessandro Michele’s collections for Gucci since he took over at the house in 2015, his immaculately curated personal Instagram, the larger-than-life looks he creates for the Met Gala, or anything else that comes in contact with his Midas touch, you’ll marvel at the wealth of references that make up this designer’s imagination. By inviting his audience to his native Rome, Michele gave us a brief but powerful taste of the influence the Italian capital has had on his creative outlook. The cruise programme kicked off with a visit to his favourite antique book store, Antica Libreria Cascianelli (which literally looked like his Instagram stories), and finished with a performance by Stevie Nicks and Harry Styles. The contrast between those two events nailed the sensory fantasy world that is Michele’s reality, forever time-travelling between centuries past, decades not long gone, and a limitless future.

It was the newest instalment in Guccis ongoing cruise through history

The show served as part five of Alessandro Michele’s ever-evolving exploration of his own dialogue with eras and styles. In 2015, Gucci took out the Dia-Art Foundation in New York City for its cruise show, in 2016 Michele’s collection graced the Cloisters of Westminster Abbey in London, in 2017 he moved into the Palatine Gallery at Pitti Palace in Florence, and last summer, he marched his models down the Promenade Des Alyscamps in Arles. Cruise by cruise – and through all his other projects for Gucci – Michele explains and informs his own hyper-historicist and cross-cultural aesthetic through the places, art and atmospheres that created it. “Rome is a place that’s difficult to define, even if you’re born here,” he said. “Rome is a big womb and many things came out of it. I will disappear but Rome will remain. Places that have been here for ages will remain; saints and prostitutes.”

Watch the Gucci cruise 2020 show, Epilogue, live here with the rest of the world

After a virtual Paris Couture Week timeline, some of the biggest houses in Italian fashion, including Prada , Dolce & Gabbana and Etro, showcased their new collections through online mediums this week. For the first time ever, Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the non-profit organisation that hosts Milano Fashion Week , went live with a digital platform. In early May, it was announced that the four-day schedule will host both mens and pre-womenswear via immersive video content.

Among the last to show, Gucci, unveils its cruise 2021 titled ‘Epilogue’ through a 12-hour live streaming, including an exclusive 20-minute choreographed feature today. Available to watch on Gucci.com, YouTube, Twitter, Weibo and the Gucci App, furthering creative director Alessandro Michele’s decision to forgo the traditional fashion schedule and instead, adapt “a new cadence”, as revealed in a series of posts from the beginning of May. The thought of Epilogue comes from Michele’s musings under the coronavirus lockdown, where he discussed sustainability within the house and his decision to build a new path in personal diaries. “The start of this quest unfolded in February. On that occasion, I wanted to celebrate the magical ritual of the fashion show: a sacred and unrepeatable liturgy through which creative thinking goes public and offers itself to the interpretation of a community of emancipated spectators. I wanted to unveil what lies behind the curtains of this ritual,” the press notes revealed about the upcoming showcase.

It went on: “The clothes will be worn by those who created them. The designers with whom, every day, I share the daze of creation, will become the performers of a new story,” perhaps alluding to an extension of his Gucci autumn/winter 2020, where the backstage became the spectacle.

To further the experience, Michele has also curated a playlist featuring a selection of tracks as an audio representation of the collection.

Gucci Calls Attention to Women's Reproductive Rights at Its Cruise 2020 Show

Fashion, Outerwear, Headgear, Costume, Fashion design, Helmet, Haute couture, Runway, Event, Uniform,

Alessandro Michele has a knack for melding old with the new. For Gucci's pre-fall 2019 campaign released earlier this year, models were transported to the ruined temples at Selinunte Archaeological Park in Sicily where a group of friends in 80s grunge haircuts and tattoos were photographed against the ancient Greek city. For the Gucci cruise 2020 show, Michele's love affair with Greek and Roman antiquity continued, this time at The Capitoline Museums in Rome.

Here's everything you need to know about the Gucci cruise 2020 runway show.

The Location

Staged at Rome’s Musei Capitolini, which is said to be one of the world's first museums, the location held a very special place in Michele's heart. As described in the show's notes, it was the location he frequented throughout his youth and the place he returned to for inspiration for the Gucci cruise 2020 collection, which had references to ancient Rome peppered throughout the presentation. Guests were given a package that contained an ancient book with a quote that read, "Only pagan antiquity awakened my desire, because it was the world of before, because it was an abolished world," by French historian and archeologist, Paul Veyne. Leaning into the theme a bit more, attendees were encouraged to use the flashlights placed on each seat to help illuminate the dark setting to see the collection.

The Collection

The Gucci cruise 2020 runway was awash with ancient Greek-inspired looks, including a long red cape with gold embroidery at the hem and a yellow and pink deep-v gown before Michele dove into the future a bit with a white multi-tiered lace dress, strong-shouldered suits, and corduroy pants in vibrant hues.

Oh, Mickey Mouse made an appearance, too.

However, a reoccurring theme throughout the collection was women's liberation. A model walked down the runway in a sweater with the date "22.5.78" emblazoned on the front, a nod to "the Italian statute for the social protection of motherhood and the voluntary interruption of pregnancy, better known as statute 194," the brand explained on its social media.

There was also a cream floor-length gown with a uterus embroidered on the front, which he designed to remind people that "women should really be respected and considered as much as men, they should have freedom of choice, even to interrupt a pregnancy, which is the most difficult one," he explained to WWD.

Gucci's Resort 2020 show drew a gang of stars, including Elton John, Zoe Saldana, A$AP Rocky, Salma Hayek, K-Pop singer Kai, Harry Styles and more.

The After-Party

Gucci took the crowd from the Musei Capitolini to the Palazzo Brancaccio for a night full of entertainment from DJs, including Zumi Rosow, and a special performance by Stevie Nicks and Harry Styles. The duo delivered a rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," written by Nicks, and "Stop Dragging My Heart" from her debut album Bella Donna.

Gucci's Cruise Collection Supports Women's Reproductive Rights With the Very Important Slogan, "My Body My Choice"

gucci cruise 2020

Gucci's Cruise 2020 collection, which took place at Rome's Capitolini Museums, is all about women empowerment. In an interview with WWD , the brand's Creative Director Alessandro Michele said the show is a "'hymn to freedom' . . . that allows him to express his belief in the idea of self-determination and gender equality."

Models walked down the runway in clothing with slogans in support of women's sexual and reproductive health and rights. One such example? The designer had blazers with the slogan "My Body My Choice" boldly stitched on the back. And if the slogan didn't get the point across, the designer embroidered an image of the female reproductive system on a gown, which was embellished with flowers. The date May 22, 1978, was also written on some of the pieces, which signifies the day the Italian law for the social protection of motherhood and legal abortion took effect.

The brand explained more in an Instagram post with the caption, "'My Body My Choice' is a feminist slogan from the '70s which appears on the reverse of this jacket seen before the #GucciCruise20 fashion show by Alessandro Michele. This piece echoes the Creative Director's continuing vision of freedom, equality and self-expression. Since founding Chime For Change in 2013 — the global campaign that represents and advocates for gender equality — Gucci has a longstanding commitment to women and girls by funding projects around the world to support sexual and reproductive rights, maternal health, and the freedom of individual choice. Learn more about the global partners for sexual and family health rights the campaign is donating to in 2019, which can be found in Chime For Change's link in bio."

Alessandro Michele on Gucci's Cruise 2020, Freedom and Social Media

ROME — Alessandro Michele is speaking up.

The designer’s Gucci Cruise 2020 collection to be shown on Tuesday evening at the Capitolini Museums in Rome is a “hymn to freedom” that will allow him to express his belief in the idea of self-determination and gender equality.

Michele is empowering freedom of expression and, in particular, freedom of choice, supporting sexual and reproductive health and rights, illustrating this concept with the feminist slogan “My body, my choice” on some of the men’s and women’s pieces, as well as on a Chime for Change T-shirt, or embroidering an image of the female reproductive system on a gown — embellished with flowers. Some looks also display the date May 22, 1978, the day the Italian law for the social protection of motherhood and legal abortion took effect. In terms of style, the designer winks to the Seventies — a crucial time for the women’s liberation movement.

The new identity for the Chime for Change gender equality campaign was launched earlier this year , but Michele and Gucci have been committed to supporting the issue for the last five years. Chime for Change has already funded more than 825,000 euros in projects for reproductive and maternal health in countries ranging from Afghanistan and Bangladesh to Mali, the Philippines, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, the U.K. and the U.S., to name a few. Gucci has been fighting domestic violence, training in Italy 160 Gucci ambassadors against domestic violence in cooperation with the National Association D.i.R.e (Women’s Network Against Violence), the first Italian association of independent women’s centers and shelters against violence.

Here, ahead of the cruise show, Michele discusses exclusively with WWD the issues that are close to his heart, how fashion allows him to convey his message, his views on social media and how beauty “originated from chaos.”

WWD: Your collection strongly underscored the concept of freedom. What is freedom for you? How do you feel free and when do you feel freedom eludes you? How do you overcome that feeling? What are the norms that annoy you the most?

Alessandro Michele : I am a free spirit, I have always been a free spirit born under the stars of freedom. My parents brought me up in that way and I have spent my entire life fighting for inclusion. Nobody should have the right to decide about freedom of choice of any human being. No law should say to any person what to do or what not to do when it comes to very personal choices. Generally speaking, I am not really into rules, I understand the need of some of them but I prefer chaos. In my view beauty has been originated from chaos, chaos is actually in its own way order.

WWD: It is obvious you want to speak up for those who have no voice and I imagine fashion for you is a fit vehicle to express an opinion — at times even inconvenient. Unfortunately, as you know, social media today at times can even muzzle freedom of expression — when actually touting it. How do you cope with this contradiction? Do you feel more limited or, on the contrary, that you have to leverage even more of the tools at your disposal to express yourself?

A.M.: I’ve been given the great opportunity of being the creative director of one of the most famous and powerful fashion brands and thanks to [president and chief executive officer] Marco [Bizzarri] my voice has never been censored at all. My clothes, my shows, my campaigns and all the projects I am producing for Gucci are my voice, “my weapon” of choice. I have been lucky, I’ve been the megaphone and I really want to use it for a purpose. Social media is nowadays a great way to spread messages but at the same time it’s populated by haters and bullies . I have been bullied in my life and I know what that feeling is like and that’s why I am really pushing Gucci’s boundaries all the time to be inclusive. When I was younger I remember being teased by alpha males for wearing flamboyant clothes. If I did not use this opportunity I’ve been given, I would not be not true to myself nor to those who are facing similar circumstances.

WWD: The Capitoline Museums, unveiled in 1734, are considered the first museum meant as a location where art could be accessible and enjoyed by everyone. Is that the reason for choosing this venue — in addition to your passion for antiquity? Or are there other motivations?

A.M.: I used to go to the Musei Capitolini every weekend with my father, it was not only a place of beauty but also a place where you could have fun. I remember those moments, they are really vivid in my mind and those memories mean a lot to me. Years later, I have realized that the Capitolini was the first museum conceived to make art available for everybody, because in my modest view, art is the least exclusive thing on earth. I live in Rome and Rome lives in me, if you start from that perspective nothing is ancient and/or old, everything is contemporary, because everything is there. If every morning you see ancient monuments and statues, how can you say that they are not alive? They are there in everyday life, like me and you. It’s an ongoing dialogue between past and nowadays — future is just an assumption to define the contemporary.

WWD: The Seventies and women’s freedom are key references in your collection. How have things changed since then? Have important steps been made or are we regressing? If so, why in your opinion? Abortion has become once again a current theme after the recent Alabama and Missouri abortion laws. The date Italy approved the abortion law will be on some of the clothes, as will the slogan, “My body my choice.”

A.M.: My new cruise collection is, as usual, an homage to many things and to different cultures and historical moments. Among other citations, there are some references to the Seventies, a moment in time when boundaries were blurred compared with nowadays. A specific moment in time when different cultures were intermixed. It was a historical moment when women — finally — rejected all the constraints that were imposed in the previous centuries and they became free. That’s why I am paying homage to the Italian law regarding abortion, the law number 194. It’s unbelievable that around the world there are still people who believe that they can control a woman’s body, a woman’s choice. I will always stand behind the freedom of being, always.

The only world that I can imagine is a world where every single person can be who they would like to be, without any sort of restriction or judgement. At the beginning of this year I commissioned MP5, a Roman artist, to redesign our Chime for Change identity. She did that by integrating the double GG in the Chime logo. I really wanted Gucci even more embedded in this campaign. My aim was and is to pass a clear and loud message about the fact that the entire Gucci community is gathered together standing for gender equality.

Gucci Launches Their Cruise 2020 Collection Ad Campaign With a Party

  • Elyza Khamil
  • October 1, 2019

On the heels of the recent abortion regressions in the United States, Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele chose to make his own statement in support of women’s reproductive rights. He did that with his Cruise 2020 collection, the runway show for which took place in Rome’s Capitoline Museums. The designer sent down several bold pieces on the runway, which included a dress with a uterus embroidered on it and a blazer that read “My Body My Choice.” His show was all about freedom, equality, and, of course, the right to choose.

Enter the Gucci Cruise 2020 ad campaign starring Gucci Mane, Sienna Miller, Iggy Pop and more to take you through what seems to be, a Gucci party that couldn’t be any more suitably playful, liberated and inclusive to match what Alessandro Michelle sent down the runway.

gucci cruise 2020

The campaign is conceived by none other than the creative director Alessandro Michele himself to celebrate and ignite this idea with an egalitarian verve. The party at the villa, where guests naturally arrive in a limousine or helicopter, because the cliché is inalienable irony. Everybody gathers together everywhere including the bathtub and the swimming pool: the ageless eager and wild rockstar, the glamorous socialite, the bourgeois lady, the tycoon, and the hip hop star.

Gucci’s party is permanent because it represents, first of all, a state of mind: everything is possible, there are no boundaries, everybody goes with everybody and what goes around comes around. The clothes offer endless possibilities to be whomever you want or to appear as you prefer, without any barriers or limits whatsoever.

The History of the Hero: The Gucci Jackie 1961

Beloved by and then renamed after Jackie O, the accessory is a piece of fashion history

jackie onassis

"What would Jackie Kennedy Onassis do?" is a perfectly reasonable question to ask oneself when getting dressed. After all, the famously chic first lady had objectively great style and a knack for accessorising. Her preferred finishing touches: a printed silk scarf, bug-eye sunglasses and, most importantly, a crescent-shaped Gucci bag, now known as the Gucci Jackie 1961.

There wasn’t just one Gucci Jackie – or as it was originally called, the Constance – in Kennedy Onassis’ repertoire. The style icon bought the bag in multiples, and she wore them so faithfully that Gucci ended up renaming the bag in her honour.

jackie onassis on the street

The story goes that in 1964, three years after the Constance was first released, Kennedy Onassis wandered into a Gucci boutique and left with six of the crescent-shaped bags. From then on, she was rarely photographed without one tucked under her arm, popularising the style and prompting the house to change the Constance’s name to ‘the Jackie’.

It’s easy to see why Kennedy Onassis was smitten. Boasting a half-moon, hobo-style silhouette and piston-shaped closure, the Gucci Jackie was a departure from many of the austere, structured bags of the era, signalling an effortless elegance that later defined the 1970s and feels contemporary to this day. With the exception of the monogram styles, the Jackie has no obvious logos, making it identifiable only to those in the know. And those in know included Irish playwright and novelist Samuel Beckett, who was photographed looking extremely chic and writerly with his very own Jackie bag on the streets of Genoa, Italy, in 1971.

gucci jackie

The bag was undeniably versatile; Kennedy Onassis wore hers in the city, at the airport, on holiday. She is pictured leaving her Manhattan apartment with a chocolate-brown leather version and in Capri wearing a two-tone canvas style. The accompanying outfit – a ribbed knit, wide silver belt and ruffle-trimmed midi skirt – looks as relevant now as it did in 1970, and typifies the timelessness of Kennedy Onassis’s style.

The Jackie was arguably one of the 1970s’ most-photographed bags, thanks largely to its namesake, who was trailed by paparazzi wherever she travelled. It seems fitting then, that the new Gucci Jackie 1961 is introduced for cruise ‘23 in a reportage-style campaign, in which we follow actor Dakota Johnson around Los Angeles. Captured by Glen Luchford, the film and photographs show the bag in various guises and scenarios, illustrating its versatility. Johnson is spotted running errands toting the Jackie in green, en route to a yoga class with the bag slung crossbody, and finally heading to Sunset Strip’s The Viper Room, aptly accessorised by a snake-print style.

The bag hasn’t changed much since 1961, which is testament to its timeless design. The most dramatic tweak was made in 1999 by Gucci’s then creative director, Tom Ford, who replaced the Jackie’s signature piston lock with a more futuristic, geometric-shaped buckle. 10 years later, Frida Giannini reprised the piston detailing when she presented the New Jackie, a larger, slightly softer iteration, and later the even slouchier Jackie Soft – as worn by a paparazzi-pursued Kate Moss in the corresponding ad campaign.

In 2020, inspired by a vintage Jackie from his personal archive, Gucci’s then creative director Alessandro Michele re-issued the bag in a form most faithful to the 1961 original and renamed it in line with its illustrious heritage. The Gucci Jackie 1961 was born, or rather reborn, as apart from its shrunken size and new candy-coloured palette, it had all the considered curves and sleek structure – as well as that piston lock, reimagined in gold – that had once won Kennedy Onassis’ heart.

2023’s offering is just as tempting. In mini, small and medium, there is a Jackie 1961 bag to accommodate all manner of daily essentials. For cruise 2023, there are seasonal styles to excite collectors – think woven raffia and luxurious velvet tapestry – and, of course, there are the classics we couldn’t do without, in neutral-hued leather and the iconic GG Supreme canvas.

It may be 62 years old, but the Gucci Jackie 1961 doesn’t show its age. It’s cool, it’s classic and it looks good with Seventies-inspired tailoring (see Harry Styles and Cate Blanchett), grungy plaid (as illustrated by Amandla Stenberg), minimally chic airport outfits (as seen on Elle Fanning) and, well, pretty much everything. Crucially, the Gucci Jackie 1961 has a longer, removable shoulder strap that transforms it from ladylike, crook-of-the-arm tote into wardrobe workhorse, effortlessly slung crossbody. We think Jackie O would approve.

Whether you’re enamoured with the new-season Jackie 1961 or looking to invest in a vintage style, there are plenty of excellent options.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-05-01 22:20

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
