The Double Dead Walking Tour
“ABSORBING stories on an INTRIGUING tour” – Mysterious Journeys, Travel Channel
The worst of both possible worlds. This tour goes into two of the most haunted places on the planet – the South Bridge Vaults AND the Covenanter’s Prison in Greyfriars Graveyard.
You survive this one and you’ll need a couple of stiff drinks. But that’s ok. We finish next to a bar.
Can cause genuine physical and mental distress. You join this walk at your own risk.
Nightly from the single tree by the roadside wall of St Giles Cathedral on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

7.30pm nightly
(plus 9.00pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
No under 12s or unaccompanied children. No hen or stag parties. Limited numbers apply. Please wear sensible foot gear. Not suitable for pregnant women, those with a heart condition or people who have difficulty walking. For safety reasons, people under the influence of alcohol will be turned away.

All our walks are written and researched by the historical author and award winning novelist, J A Henderson – who has written non-fiction books on the Underground City, The Mackenzie Poltergeist and Haunted Edinburgh. Signed copies of these and his young adult and children’s novels are available from our gift shop or can be ordered on this website. Our guides are a mixture of historians and professional entertainers, picked for their ability to improvise, entertain and make each tour unique and individual. This is history brought to life through storytelling, rather than simply walking around and pointing out historical facts. City of the Dead Haunted Graveyard Tour
This tour has sole access to the Covenanter's Prison, a locked section of Greyfriars Graveyard and lair of the infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist, the best supernatural case of all time - responsible for hundreds of 'attacks' on the tours.
Combining history, humour and horror, the walk ends inside the Covenanter’s Prison – a locked section of a 16th century walled cemetery. This is the lair of the ‘McKenzie Poltergeist’ – now the best-documented paranormal case in history.
As well as receiving massive national and international television and newspaper coverage, the McKenzie Poltergeist is the subject of an acclaimed book - The Ghost That Haunted Itself. Signed copies are available after the tour.
Since City of the Dead has the only access to the Prison, we have been able to record all of the ‘attacks’ on visitors there. So far there have been over 900 – including 180 people who have been knocked unconscious!
