Cruising has had a rough few years, with increased travel restrictions and plummeting demand due to the pandemic. Now that the majority of countries are open again, many travelers are thinking it’s time to jump back on board. If you’ve never taken a cruise but are interested in traveling by ship, you may be wondering, “Do you need a passport to go on a cruise to the Bahamas?” 

The answer to this question depends on a number of things. Let’s take a look at whether you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise, what other types of documentation you can use and how it differs when you’re flying versus cruising.

Cruising to the Bahamas

For those who are unfamiliar with cruising or the Caribbean, the Bahamas is a frequent destination for these behemoth ships. This nation of islands is conveniently located just off the coast of Florida, near Miami, which makes it an easy destination no matter the length of your cruise. 

For this reason, you’ll see plenty of cruises taking off from Florida, stopping off in the Bahamas, then looping back and docking in the United States.

Do you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise?

So, do you need a passport to cruise to the Bahamas? In most cases, U.S. citizens won’t need one. This is because the majority of cruises that you’ll find taking off from the U.S. and heading down to the Bahamas operate on a closed loop. Closed-loop cruises are those that take off from a U.S. port, visit at least one foreign port of call and then return to that same port.

There is an exception to the closed-loop rule: If your ship will be docking in a foreign country that requires a passport to enter, you will need to carry one on board. In order to find out if you’ll need a passport for any of your destination countries, check with your cruise company.

Even if you are on a closed-loop cruise, though, you will still need to bring identification documentation in lieu of a passport.

What you need for a Bahamas cruise

If you’re sailing on a Bahamas cruise that’s closed loop and isn’t visiting any countries that require a passport, you don’t necessarily need to bring one with you — there are a few different identification options available to you.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, you’ll still need to provide some proof of U.S. citizenship. This can take the form of an Enhanced Driver’s License , a passport or a government-issued birth certificate. Additionally, you’ll need to bring a government-issued ID with your photo, name and date of birth. 

It’s important to note that this documentation is only valid for reentry to the United States through a sea or land border crossing — it won’t work for air travel.

If you’re bringing a birth certificate for proof of citizenship, it must be issued by the Vital Records Department of the state in which you were born. A hospital certificate of birth or baptismal papers don’t qualify. 

For non-U.S. citizens

If you’re not a U.S. citizen, do you need a passport to cruise to the Bahamas? Lawful permanent residents will be able to reenter the U.S. with a valid green card, but they will likely require a passport (and maybe even a visa) to visit any ports of call — including those which do not require passports of U.S. citizens. 

Other non-U.S. citizens will require a passport or documentation specific to the status they’re seeking when entering the U.S., though there are some exceptions for those traveling to the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program.

Be aware that these requirements only dictate reentry into the United States. You’ll want to research entry regulations for your destination country or countries before you leave to ensure you have proper documentation on hand.

Cruising versus flying

It’s important to understand the information provided above is limited to either land or sea border crossings. This means that if you’re heading to the Bahamas by air, you’re going to need to bring your passport to reenter the U.S. 

If you have a passport, you may want to consider bringing it with you on your cruise even if it’s not required. Here’s why: Say you accidentally miss boarding the ship after your land excursion and need to take a flight back to Miami. In this case, your closed-loop cruise will have been interrupted and you’ll need your passport to get back into the United States.

Don’t have a passport and still want to fly somewhere special? Consider heading to a United States territory, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa or Guam.

When you need a passport for a cruise

Cruising further from the u.s..

There are occasions when you’ll need to bring your passport for a cruise. If you’re cruising outside of the U.S. — such as a jaunt through the Mediterranean — you’ll need to have your passport with you. 

Certain repositioning cruises

You’ll also need a passport for cruises that begin and end in different ports, even if they’re both in the United States. 

A good example of this is a repositioning cruise from Miami to San Diego. During different seasons, cruises will often sail one-way routes from one port to another in order to reposition their ships.

If you board in Miami, make a few ports of call, sail through the Panama Canal and end in San Diego, you’ll need to bring your passport.

In case of medical emergencies

In general, it is preferable to have a passport with you — especially in the event you need emergency medical care and have to stay in a foreign country, for example.

Purchasing cruise travel insurance can also mitigate the risks of travel emergencies.

Even better, you might not have to pay for coverage out-of-pocket. Book your trip with a credit card that includes travel insurance coverage as a perk and you'll have some peace of mind, even without additional coverage.

Other closed-loop cruises

The Bahamas isn’t the only place you can cruise without needing a passport. Plenty of locations are available to you as long as they maintain that closed-loop system. Other cruise destinations where you don’t need a passport may include:

Various ports in Mexico, such as Baja, Cozumel or Ensenada.

The Caribbean.

The Caribbean includes over a dozen different countries and territories, so don’t think that you’re limited. Your options range from Barbados to Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Aruba and more.

I'd personally trust this over what anyone here says, assuming this info is specific to your sailing. Regardless of the general truth about closed loop cruises there are absolutely some that do require a passport. For an example, look no farther than the recent slight media dust-up over Princess CS telling folks on a closed loop they didn't need a passport when they totally did leading to several pax being denied boarding (not sure about link policy here, so I'll just say you can find if you Google "princess passports stranded"). At the very least, I'd do some research into the ports to see if any do require a passport. As I recall, the folks that got denied boarding on Princess were meant to visit a specific country that lead to the requirement, despite the cruise being closed loop.

I do not understand why people travel without a passport. Without it you are looking for trouble.

Agree 100% with what you said. However, as a note, you can get a same day passport by visiting an office. Not suggesting you do this, just bringing it up as you said you don't have time.

I think @bundtkate  gave you the best answer. I personally travelled MSC post covid with someone who used a BC and there were no problems, but YMMV.

Just had people use birth certificates in December on a 3 night Meraviglia cruise. Bret

 I have cruised 20+ times on Carribean itineray type cruises...All departing and returning to same FL ports (closed loop). This includes 2 cruises on MSC.   Have used BC and Govt ID for all. Most recently back from Thanksgiving Cruise on Odyssey of Seas.

Do not get scared by some posters telling you different. While there are some "piece of mind" benifits of a Passport  (missing ship at a port, getting ill, needing to leave cruise early due to a family emergency,etc)...the liklihood of this ocurring is very rare.   Enjoy your cruise!!

Remember that while a birth certificate and government issued photo ID can be used by US citizens on certain close looped cruises from a US port, this is only meets the US requirement for reentering the US at the end of the cruise.

However, other countries can require a passport for cruise ship passengers and there are countries in the "Caribbean" that do (Caribbean is in quotes because many think that if a country borders the Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico, they fall under  the BC and photo ID use).

One must always pay attention to the itinerary and the written information on document requirements as posted on the cruise lines websites and provided by the cruise line in booking information.

Cruise lines can also require passports for all passengers or just specific groups of passengers.

Just ask a small group of passengers left on the pier at embarkation on a recent Princess cruise (24 out of approximately  3,000 passenger) who ignored the requirement for a passport because of the itinerary and went with "Caribbean" closed loop cruise from US port.

All good points.  But for Carribean... Ive cruised to all islands (ABC too) except those southern  most carribean  islands you cruise from a San Juan departure. This includes Mexican Riviera routes...Passports not required for US citizens.

Its obvious the Princess example you illustrated was a longer cruise and likely included Central/So America stops (Colombia. Panama Canal cruise). I have found cruiselines are very accurate and remind you what doc's you need for your cruise except for MSC. Which isn't surpring because you will ger 4 different responses from 4 different people. Being that most of their sailings are  European and Middle East they tend to state the  same document requirement for all their cruises...this is why you read more questions on BC vs PP on MSC board. 

The Princess cruise did not include South America or the Panama Canal.  However, it did include Martinique and Guadeloupe.  EM

Essiesmom already gave the correct information about the Princess cruise.

My post was an attempt to help people learn that the assumption that a birth certificate and photo ID is all that is needed for closed loop cruises can leave them standing on the pier at embarkation.

They say you must, because the Bahamas say you must. However unless the Bahamas start doing actual passport controls it makes no difference. There’s nothing to stop you travelling with just ID and a birth certificate. You’ll only need them to return to Miami, all you’ll have to show in the Bahamas is your cruise card.

Assuming your 3 day cruise is to the Bahamas, and if you go to the Bahamas government website, it will tell you all tourists must be in possession of a valid passport. So technically your answer is “no”.

However as everyone knows the only destination that applies passport controls to cruise passengers is Martinique. The only document you’ll have to show in the Bahamas is your cruise card. So in reality there’s nothing to stop you cruising with just a BC and ID.

Saw several people in line with BC & DL this weekend.  Short Bahamas cruise. 

Travel agent chiming in here (and one that's good friends with my MSC US rep): Most of MSC's documents are still all based on the European clientele and they're still fairly new to marketing to US-based cruisers (and yes, some changes are coming to the US ships which most of you will like - mostly all soft-product type changes). While YES, its true - you should NOT travel without a passport on these cruises - you will be fine with a birth certificate and Enhanced Drivers License (EDL).  

I personally don't and won't sell a cruise to anyone without a passport - too much can go wrong, and if you get stuck somewhere WITHOUT a passport (eg: Belize, Dominican Republic, etc) - you are held in a customs bonded facility (think jail without the bars) until another MSC ship comes along that can repatriate you.  And its at YOUR expense.  You can NOT fly to the US without a passport, no ands ifs or buts.  The consulate won't help you (now, lost or stolen passport is a different ballgame).

Enhanced DL is not required...Many States have continued to push back the deadline for switchover. Regular license will be just fine

Correct. NO EDL is needed.

You all are confusing a "Real ID" and "Enhanced" Diver's license.

It is the "Real ID" requirement that is being pushed back , not the "Enhanced" that is limited to a small number of states bordering Canada.

Going to the Bahamas...the info I collected was you just need an enhanced license and no birth certificate.   I am not chancing it and taking my bc with me.   Read somewhere that someone had just an enhanced license and the person had no clue what it was.   We got an enhanced because by May 2023, you were suppose to have one.  Now the requirements pushed that back for a few years.   Definitely check to see what islands require a passport before cruising.   I have always had one, but now it is expired.  Been to the Bahamas with just a bc and am comfortable with that, but would not try it with other islands. jmo

Do you live in one of the following states?

Those are the ONLY states that issued "Enhanced" driver's license.... These are the ONLY ones that can be used for land and sea border entries back into the USA by themselves.

Other states are issuing RealID compliant licenses...  These DO require a birth certificate for a cruise.

Does a U.S. Citizen Need a Passport to Cruise to the Bahamas

With the Bahamas as the closest island vacation and cruise destination to the U.S., a common question is, “Do I need a passport to visit the Bahamas?” 

The answer depends a lot on how you plan to go to the Bahamas. Arriving by airplane or cruise ship makes a difference.

Do You Need a Passport to Fly to the Bahamas

To visit the Bahamas by plane, less than 200 miles from Miami, all U.S. citizens need a passport. And that means a passport book, not the less expensive passport card. 

Also, it’s important to keep in mind that passports are only valid for 10 years. Countries have rules about traveling with a passport book that’s near the end of its validity.

For example, you should renew your passport sometime before six months until expiration, if you plan to travel with it. This is important because many countries will not allow you to enter if your passport has less than six months until it expires.

Or you could be turned away at the airport when you check-in to board your international flight. Don’t let this sneak up on you. Be sure to always have at least six months more on your passport from the date that you plan to return to the U.S.

Do you Need a Passport to Cruise to the Bahamas

If you’re on a cruise that departed from the U.S. and will visit Nassau or Freeport, Bahamas during your cruise and return to the U.S., you are permitted to travel with a passport card. 

This is called a closed-loop cruise and requirements are more lenient. 

If you don’t have a passport book or passport card, you can also go on a closed-loop cruise with a U.S. government-issued photo ID like a driver’s license, and an official birth certificate. 

But that is probably the worst way to ensure a speedy return to the U.S. in case of an emergency. Here’s why…

If a medical or personal emergency occurs that requires you to fly home from the Bahamas, or any foreign port for that matter, you will need a passport book. Again, it’s because you are flying back to the U.S. and not returning by ship.

What happens if you stay too long at the shops or Señor Frog’s and miss your ship? You’ll need to catch a plane to meet your ship at the next port. To do so you will need a passport book. 

Do You Need a Passport to Cruise From the Bahamas

The simple answer is YES. Be aware that if your cruise originates in the Bahamas, from Nassau for example, you need a passport book. 

Why? Because even though you are taking a cruise in the Bahamas, you are flying from the U.S. to go to the Bahamas to embark your ship.

If you plan to begin your cruise in the Bahamas or elsewhere in the Caribbean, you will need a passport book. 

Visiting the Bahamas by Air or Cruise Ship

Understanding the ins and outs of international travel can be confusing, especially for un-seasoned travelers and cruisers. Even though the 700 islands in the Bahamas are so close to the U.S., it’s still an international destination.

Whether you arrive by plane to board a ship or stay for a week at a resort or just spend a day in Nassau or Freeport, all require specific documentation. 

Conclusion: What You Need to Visit the Bahamas

Here’s a summary of what official identification a U.S. citizen needs to fly to or cruise to/from the Bahamas.

• Round-trip cruise from the U.S. to or including the Bahamas:   A passport book, passport card or a government-issued photo ID and official Birth Certificate.
• Flying from the U.S. to the Bahamas for a land-based vacation:  A passport book is required, with at least six months until it expires.
• Flying from the U.S. to the Bahamas to embark a cruise ship:   Same as for a land vacation; a passport book is required.

Don’t get turned away at the cruise terminal or airport gate for not having a current passport book. And if you have less than two blank pages in your passport book, you will need to renew it. The Bahamas Government requires two blank pages in a U.S. passport for their entry stamp.

Hi Tanesha, Thank you for reading my article and asking a very important question. Normally, on what is called a closed-loop cruise (a round-trip cruise from a U.S. port) you are okay with a government issued photo ID and a birth certificate with a raised seal.

However, since you will be staying on Grand Bahama Island for five days, that may raise a question. Definitely contact the cruise line again and if you don’t get the answer that you need, call again. You can also call the tourism office for the Bahamas or the US Embassy, or the hotel that you’ll stay. I don’t want to give you any advise that may be incorrect; I’ve never been asked your question and it is a very good one.

Question i am taking a cruise from palm beach Florida to grand Bahama islands we are doing a cruise and stay package so we will be staying on island and then returning by the same cruise ship 5 days later it says on the cruise lines that we can use ID and birth certificates im getting missed rules ones saying no we can return the same way we go and then im reading others say that because we are staying on island we would need a passport to return is that true.

Hi Sharon, I apologize for the delay in my reply…I ended up with covid at the beginning of January and slept most of the time. So to answer your question, as of this moment, no, you do not need a covid vaccination or a negative test result to cruise to the Bahamas. Your cruise line may have their own criteria or this could change if an outbreak is sudden. Check on the CDC website for the most up-to-date travel information as it relates to covid. • U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean (except the French West Indies for certain cruise lines), the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.  
• Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean cruises that visit islands in the French West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin and Saint Barts) require a valid passport regardless of departure port.  
• Children under the age of 16 who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization as proof of citizenship for entry into the U.S. by land or by sea. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport.  
• When minors are traveling with only one adult, Holland America and Princess require that all passengers have a valid passport.  
• A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.  
• The following cruise lines require a passport for all sailings, regardless of destination or port of departure: Azamara, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Oceania, P&O, Paul Gauguin, Regent, Seabourn, SeaDream, Silversea, Star Clippers and Windstar.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Ocean Cay (MSC’s Private Island): Complete Guide, Tips, & Things to Know

If you are taking a cruise in the United States aboard MSC, chances are high that you’ll be visiting Ocean Cay. This is the cruise line’s private island in the Bahamas that’s exclusive to guests of MSC.

In other words, if you’ve ever wanted to spend a day on your own island, surrounded by the bluest water on the planet, this is your chance. It’s large, with seemingly miles of beaches and enough space to where you can get away from it all.

But if you thought that MSC simply bought an island and opened it up to passengers, that’s not the case at all. In total the company spent a reported $300 million into renovating Ocean Cay. What began years ago as a former industrial sand excavation site is now a completely new and revitalized island.

Those lucky enough to visit Ocean Cay are in for a special day (and possible overnight stay). If you are about to take a trip there, we’ve covered the spot from start to finish below, with everything you need to know.

Ocean Cay Location

One of the defining features of Ocean Cay is its close location to Miami. As just 65 miles southeast from the Port of Miami, it has the advantage of being reached in just a few hours. In fact, the island is so close that ships sometimes dock overnight — giving passengers all day at the island… and then some — and still be able to reach Miami within a few hours.

Other major cruise ports (relatively) near Ocean Cay include Nassau, Key West, and Freeport. Don’t be surprised if one or more of these stops are also included on your cruise.

Ocean Cay Overview

As we’ve mentioned, the island is a private paradise for MSC passengers. But to simply call it that wouldn’t do the work that MSC has done justice.

Until a few years ago Ocean Cay was an industrial spot where sand was excavated for use in other places. The cruise line has since transformed it into what it is today, as well as an eco-friendly marine reserve.

Of course, guests will be most interested in the beaches and water. Ocean Cay today has enormous stretches of white-sand beaches that wrap around the island. As part of the building process, MSC put in a protective island and reshaped the land to also create a calm lagoon so that swimming and water activities are possible no matter how rough the surrounding sea may be.

Perhaps the biggest draw to the island is the surrounding water. A rare color of electric blue, the waters of Ocean Cay are some of the most striking we’ve ever seen. One thing to note is that the winter months can see cooler water temps. So just because the weather is warm year-round doesn’t always mean the water will be as well.

The first thing you will notice on the island is the large lighthouse that’s the anchor of Lighthouse Bay, right near where the cruise ship docks. The lighthouse features a viewing platform, as well as a bar at its base. At night it transforms into a colorful video screen, accompanied by music and a lightshow.

Around the entire island are a number of other things to do, see, and visit. This includes eight different beaches, shops, a spa, food trucks, a buffet, bars, cabanas, and even a wedding chapel.

One thing that you’ll definitely notice is the size of Ocean Cay. If you’ve been on other private cruise line islands like CocoCay or Great Stirrup Cay , you know they are sizable, but the area reserved for guests is smaller.

Ocean Cay has much more area for their guests. We would estimate that to walk an entire loop around the island, it would take you about 30 minutes at a brisk pace. Have trouble walking? There are beaches right near the cruise ship so you don’t have to venture far. There is also a free tram that drives guests all around the island.

However, one positive about having a larger island is that there is plenty of space for everyone. While some of the most popular beaches can get crowded at peak times, you can simply walk a few hundred feet and have a spot all to yourself.

Things to Do On the Island

As you would expect, most of the time you’ll spend on Ocean Cay revolves around the beach and the ocean. Blessed with both gorgeous sand and stunning clear water, you’ll want to get your fill of both.

Beaches & Swimming If you come to Ocean Cay and don’t spend any time on the beach, then you may as well stay on the ship. Beaches are all around the island, including Lighthouse Bay that is right near the cruise ship.

The most popular area for swimming and lounging is South Beach. This beach wraps around and another small island (North Beach) creates a large lagoon. In between these two spots the water is always calm as it’s protected from the open ocean. That makes it ideal for swimming. South Beach is roughly a 10-minute walk from the ship.

Other beaches include Bimini Beach, Ocean House Beach, Sunset Beach, and more.

Cabanas Want to hang out on the beach in style? Rent a cabana. These cabanas are dotted all around the island. They are open-air, but provide much needed shade during the day. There’s also a couch, chairs, and loungers. Prices start at $280 for up to six people.

Lighthouse Show During the day the lighthouse on the island is the biggest landmark you’ll see. It can be seen from everywhere and you can even pay to climb to the top. But if you think it’s prominent during the day, wait until night.

At night there are lighthouse shows. The entire building is covered in light panels and circled at top and bottom with bright spotlights. Set to music, the show features colorful graphics around the lighthouse, along with an amazing lightshow. It’s a can’t miss.

Snorkeling/Diving Of course with so much gorgeous water surrounding the island, it’s a great place to snorkel. Equipment is available for rent on the island, and you can either explore on your own or book and excursion that will take you to some of the best spots.

Are you a diver? If you have your certification then you can book a one or two-tank dive from the island.

Shops Right as you walk ashore, you will enter Ocean Cay Village. Here you’ll find an information booth, excursion desk, Springer’s bar, and also shops. Whether you want to pick up some sunscreen that you forgot or want to buy some souvenirs, the shops here have you covered.

Kayak/Paddleboarding If you want to get on the water, there’s no better way than renting a kayak or a paddleboard. Both are available for about $40. You’ll have the ability to go explore the waters around the island, including a chance to see wildlife in the area, including sea turtles if you’re lucky.

Jet Ski Tours Adrenaline junkies will love that you can book a jet ski tour to explore the island and the surrounding area. There’s space for one driver and one passenger, and you’ll be in charge of driving. Never ridden a jet ski before? Don’t worry, they will cover everything you need to know to get started before the tour.

Stargazing One of the unique things about Ocean Cay is that MSC features extended days at the island, with the ship often departing at midnight. That means you can spend some time ashore during the evening and night.

And given the remoteness of the island, it’s a pretty good spot for stargazing. MSC offers a stargazing excursion, but you can also wander out to the darker spots and see constellations that you won’t notice in the city.

What to Eat/Drink on Ocean Cay

Hungry? A day in the sun and the water can build up an appetite. There’s plenty to eat on the island, and it’s included in your cruise fare.

The biggest spot to eat is Seakers Food Court. This is a buffet that features buffet staples like burger and dogs. Just don’t expect high-end dining. It’s just about in the center of the island, and right near South Beach. There is also bar service at the buffet if you are feeling thirsty. 

Apart from Seakers, there are multiple food trucks around the island. These spots (called Beach Shacks) are also free, but we’ve noticed some have paid options. With so many of them, you never have to walk far to get a bite to eat. They have a menu of hamburgers, dogs, and pasta salad for those who don’t eat meat.

As well, if you simply want to go back to the ship, the buffet onboard will also be serving food.

Thirsty? Like the food trucks, there are multiple bars around Ocean Cay where you can get anything your heart desires. Especially popular are the beach drinks served in a souvenir pineapple cup. One good thing is that your drink package from the ship also works on Ocean Cay, so you can get drinks here just like on the ship.

Facilities on Ocean Cay

For your comfort, there are a number of facilities on the island for your use.

Several different restroom stations are dotted along the island, and feature handicapped accessible stalls. Each restroom also has water fountains for you to grab a drink (disposable plastic bottles are discouraged on the island).

Each restroom station also has showers alongside the outside wall where you can rinse off the salt and sand from your day at the beach.

As of our last visit, lockers were nowhere to be found. However, most people seemed to just put their stuff in or under a lounger and no one else messed with it. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wi-fi work on Ocean Cay? Have an Internet package on the ship? The good news is that this service extends to Ocean Cay. So whether you want to check email, or post that selfie of you on the island to your Instagram, you can do it from the shore. You do need to connect to a different network, but if you paid for wi-fi for the cruise, you can use it on shore as well.

Do drink packages extend to Ocean Cay? Yes. One of the best perks about booking a drink package is that unlike most ports of call, you can use your package on the island just like you would on the ship. Since Ocean Cay is the cruise line’s private island, you can get your money’s worth from the package even while on land.

Are there towels available on the island? No. You will need to bring the beach towel supplied to you in your cabin or grab one from near the pool. Then you will need to bring this back with you when you go back the ship or drop it off near the exit of the island. There is a charge for any missing towels not turned in at the end of the cruise.

Do I need cash on the island? Mostly no. There are some shops that take U.S. dollars. Everything else, including bars and rental stations, you can use your room keycard just like you do on the ship.

Is there transportation around Ocean Cay? Yes. The island is large and walking all day around it is enough to wear anyone out. MSC offers carts hat goes to several spots around the island. The stops are large pavilions that offer some shade while you wait for your ride. Just hop on and hop off where you want.

Other Things to Know About Ocean Cay

Shade is at a premium While Ocean Cay has transformed into an island paradise, it is still a work in progress. The cruise line planted thousands of trees, but they are still growing. As a result, many spots around the island are barren or only have some vegetation. That means natural shade is rare.

As for the beach, the thousands of loungers are free to use, but if you want an umbrella for shade, you’ll need to rent one for the day ($17 for the day)

Traffic can be bad on the island We’re only slightly joking when we say that traffic is bad. There are concrete walkways that weave around the island, but they are also used for the tram and for golf carts used by the staff.

The result is that pedestrians get pushed to the side or off the path to let these vehicles past. So when walking, watch your step and be mindful of these carts driving around. 

Ocean Cay strives to be eco-friendly MSC is making a big push to have Ocean Cay do right by the environment. That means some huge moves like cleaning up the former industrial site the island is built on, but also smaller things. For instance, plastic bottles aren’t on the island so you’ll need to bring a reusable bottle or get a glass for water at the bar.

As well, sunscreens should be safe for coral reefs (it’s sold on the island if you need some). There are also no paper maps of the island to cut down on the waste.

As mentioned, the island is free to enjoy, but there are plenty of extras that will cost money. The prices below for various items are from a recent trip and are subject to change.

These go very quickly and are not assigned until you arrive. The Cabana and Deluxe cabana offer shade and comfortable seating. No bar service, no food service. Bring your own towels and snorkel gear for your own comfort. Try to get off the ship as early as possible as the shaded areas(Very limited) go fast. Umbrellas are available first come first serve. IF you have limited mobility and need wheelchair assistance to the beach there are beach wheel chairs, but they may be all over the island or already on the beach. I needed one and one was not available at the check out but was on the beach. We used one to get me in the water and to get me out. I am on crutches and scooter due to a broken ankle and it worked out for me just fine.

All of the cabanas were sold out on the MSC website. Are there other options for renting one once we get there ? I was very disappointed.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

• The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

• Passport card
• State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
• Government-issued birth certificate
• Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
• American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

• Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
• Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

• Voter registration cards
• Social Security cards
• Baptismal papers
• Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

Do you need a passport to go to the Bahamas? Everything you need to know before your trip

I f you’re planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the first things you’ll need to sort out is your travel documentation. As a U.S. citizen, you generally need to have a valid passport book or passport card to enter the Bahamas by air or sea. While it’s close to the United States , it’s not part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As such, you’ll need to meet the same entry requirements as you would for any other foreign country.

What you should know before traveling to the Bahamas

There are some details to keep in mind when it comes to the required travel documents for entering the Bahamas.

Can you use your driver’s license to go to the Bahamas?

No, a driver’s license alone is not sufficient for entry into the Bahamas. Even though the Bahamas is a relatively short distance from the U.S., you’ll still need to present a valid U.S. passport book or passport card when arriving by air or sea.

Your driver’s license may be used as additional identification, but it cannot replace a passport for international travel to the Bahamas. The Bahamas Immigration authorities are strict about enforcing entry requirements, so it’s best to have proper documentation in order.

Can you go on a cruise without a passport?

If you’re planning to take a “closed-loop” cruise that begins and ends at the same U.S. port, you may be able to cruise to the Bahamas without a passport book. However, you’ll need to have a valid passport card, enhanced driver’s license (EDL), or other accepted Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document.

It’s important to check with your cruise line well in advance – some cruise companies may require a passport book regardless of the itinerary. Cruise lines typically recommend having a passport book, even if it’s not strictly required, because it can make re-entry to the U.S. smoother if unforeseen delays or itinerary changes occur.

Is the Bahamas a U.S. territory?

No, the Bahamas is not a U.S. territory. It’s an independent nation made up of over 700 islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, located just off the coast of Florida.

While the Bahamas has close ties with the United States, it’s a separate country with its own government, laws, and entry requirements for visitors. This means you’ll need to follow the same travel regulations as any other foreign destination.

Bottom line

The main thing to remember is that you’ll need a valid passport book or passport card to travel to the Bahamas, whether you’re flying or taking a cruise. Your driver’s license just won’t cut it for this international trip, even though the Bahamas is pretty close to the U.S. Now if you’re doing a cruise that leaves from and returns to the same U.S. port, you might be able to get by with just a passport card or other WHTI-approved identification instead of a book. But don’t take chances – check with your cruise line first.

8 Cruise Destinations That Don’t Require a Passport

Cruising is back after a few years of rough seas, figuratively speaking. Cruise lines worked behind the scenes during the pandemic, planning for their return to the world’s waterways. New ships , creative amenities, engaging shore excursions, a wide range of itineraries, and meticulous health protocols are now attracting first-time cruisers as well as long-time cruise fans. From mega-ships to smaller expedition vessels, there’s a voyage for every type of traveler. 

If you’ve been thinking about a cruise — perhaps you received an invitation from a friend to join an upcoming trip, or you noticed a last-minute cruise bargain — you’ll want to make sure you have all of your travel documents ready to go. If your passport has been gathering dust for the last two years, it may be expired. Does that mean you won’t be able to take the cruise? Not necessarily — here’s what you need to know about taking a cruise without a passport. 

You can cruise to quite a few destinations without a passport, as long as you have proof of citizenship and a government-issued photo ID. A variety of documents are accepted as proof of citizenship, including a state-certified U.S. birth certificate. A complete list is provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and their recent publication also explains the requirements for taking a cruise without a passport. Note that enhanced driver’s licenses are issued in very few states at this time, so it’s important not to assume that yours qualifies as identification and proof of citizenship.

The cruises must be “closed-loop,” meaning they begin and end at the same U.S. port. A one-way cruise that boards in a U.S. port and disembarks in a different U.S. port does not qualify. While you may leave and enter the United States on a closed-loop cruise with the required identification and proof of citizenship, you should be aware that some countries on your itinerary may require a passport. (Your cruise line should provide that information when you book your trip.) It’s still a good idea to bring your passport on a cruise if it’s up to date, but if it’s not, we’ve got you covered. Here are eight destinations that you can cruise to without a passport (and don’t forget to renew your passport so you’ll always be ready to travel).  

Places to Cruise Without a Passport

The good news is that you can cruise to quite a few popular destinations without a passport, including Alaska, the Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, Hawaii, the Caribbean , Canada, and New England. Just be sure that your cruise begins and ends in the same U.S. port, and double check your identification and proof of citizenship documents.

The majority of closed-loop cruises to Alaska originate and return to Seattle. However, American Cruise Lines ’ Southeast Alaska cruise boards in Juneau and returns to the same port after visiting Glacier Bay and several Alaskan towns.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a seven-day cruise from Seattle aboard Norwegian Bliss with stops in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay, and Victoria before returning to Seattle. Holland America Line ’s seven-day Alaskan Explorer departs from Seattle and cruises the Puget Sound and Stephens Passage.

Florida’s ports of Miami, Port Everglades (in Fort Lauderdale), and Port Canaveral (about an hour east of Orlando) offer the majority of closed-loop cruises to the Bahamas. In addition to those departure ports, Carnival Cruise Line sails to the Bahamas from Florida ports in Jacksonville and Tampa, while Royal Caribbean has departures from Tampa, Baltimore, Cape Liberty, New Jersey, and Galveston, Texas.

Disney Cruise Line offers a three-night Bahamian cruise from Port Canaveral aboard the spectacular Disney Wish with a day in Nassau and a day at Disney Castaway Cay before returning to Port Canaveral.

Closed-loop cruises to Mexico depart from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Galveston. From East Coast ports, cruise ships visit the Yucatan Peninsula’s Costa Maya and the island of Cozumel in the Caribbean Sea. From West Coast ports, destinations along the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez include Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, Manzanillo, Loreto, La Paz, Guaymas, and Topolobampo.

Celebrity Cruises ’ 12-night New Orleans & the Caribbean cruise departs from and returns to Tampa after stops in New Orleans, Key West, and Honduras as well as Costa Maya and Cozumel. Princess Cruises offers a seven-day Mexican Riviera with La Paz voyage that includes Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, and La Paz.

Located 570 miles east of North Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda is a convenient cruise destination from the East Coast ports of New York City, Baltimore, Charleston, Boston, Port Canaveral, Miami, and Norfolk, Virginia. 

Carnival ’s six-day Bermuda from Norfolk cruise spends two days at sea and three days in Bermuda. Bermuda Bliss, a seven-day Oceana cruise from New York City, visits Hamilton and St. George in Bermuda and includes two days at sea.

The Hawaiian islands are about 3,700 miles from the West Coast, so cruises from the mainland to Hawaii and back involve four or five days at sea in each direction. Closed-loop cruises depart from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and San Diego. There are also cruises that originate in Honolulu and tour the other islands. 

Princess Cruises' 16-day Hawaiian Islands voyage from San Francisco visits Hilo, Honolulu, Kauai, and Maui before five days at sea and a stop in Ensenada on the return to San Francisco. Norwegian Cruise Line offers a seven-day Hawaii inter-island cruise that boards in Honolulu and visits Maui, Hilo and Kona on the Big Island, and Kauai before returning to Honolulu.

The Caribbean

Departure ports for closed-loop Caribbean cruises include Tampa, Miami, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, Baltimore, New Orleans, and New York City. Cruises also depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico. 

Regent Seven Seas features the Wonders in the Caribbean cruise that departs from Miami with stops in the Cayman Islands, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Key West. Royal Caribbean ’s seven-night Southern Caribbean Holiday cruise embarks in San Juan and visits Barbados, Trinidad, Tobago, St. Vincent, and St. Maarten.

Canada and New England

Canada and New England are typically grouped together on itineraries that originate in Boston, New York City, and Cape Liberty, New Jersey. 

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a seven-day Canada & New England cruise from New York City with visits to Halifax, Nova Scotia; Saint John, New Brunswick; and Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine, before a day at sea and a return to New York City. 

Passports are required for all travelers, including citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the U.S. by air, land or sea .

There are a few notable exceptions pertaining to land and sea border crossings:

• U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.  
• Children under the age of 16 who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization as proof of citizenship for entry into the U.S. by land or by sea. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport.  
• A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Legal U.S. Residents (Non-Citizens)

Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must have a valid passport from their country of citizenship and a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) to enter or re-enter the U.S.

Non-U.S., Non-Canada Citizens

The following countries participate in a visa waiver program with the U.S., and citizens of these countries must have a machine-readable passport for entry into the U.S.:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

Citizens of the countries listed above who do not possess machine-readable passports, and citizens of countries not listed above must present a valid passport and a valid United States visa upon entry into the U.S. For those whose travel plans include multiple entries into the U.S., such as a cruise that begins and ends in a U.S. port, a multiple-entry visa is required.

All travelers, including U.S. and Canada citizens , are responsible for verifying visa requirements with consular officials, and obtaining visas where required, for every country visited during their trip, including countries visited via connecting flights.
