Thanksgiving is an American holiday and people travel all over the country to be with their family on this day. There is usually a big turkey on the dinner table and everyone enjoys the get-together. Thanksgiving is the only day in New York City where museums, shops and even some restaurants that do not offer a special Thanksgiving dinner are closed.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the highlight in the city. Also, don’t miss the popular inflation the day before. It’s a great opportunity to check out the balloons before they are getting to shine during the Thanksgiving Parade the day after.

The New York City skyline is one of the most famous and recognizable skylines in the world. It’s a city filled with skyscrapers and tall buildings. In most recent years, it has been expanding which made way for new observation decks. The newest observation deck is located at the top of the One Vanderbilt Building and is called The Summit . This deck is the second-highest outdoor deck in NYC which follows the Edge and has been open since October 2021.

It celebrates its 1st birthday on October 21, and for the grandiose views alone, it’s one of my MUST SEE for October. Because then you see the first colorful leaves of Central Park up close!

SummerStage Festival: One last concert in October in NYC

At this event you can visit over 100 concerts & shows for free in many parks all over New York. It’s one of the most popular summer events in New York and a MUST DO for locals. Even though it is called Summer Stage, there is still one concert in October. So don’t miss it!

The first ice skating rinks open by the end of October preparing you for a smooth transition into the winter. Ice skating is fun regardless of the season, so we’d recommend taking advantage of it! Ice skating in New York is always one of the most fun things to do . It’s a great fall activity, especially if you are traveling with children.

Besides ice skating rinks , some Christmas markets will also be open starting in end of October / early November. The Bank of America’s Winter Village at Bryant Park (behind the Public Library), the famed Rink at Rockefeller Center and the Wollman Rink in Central Park are just three of New York City’s finest ice rinks.

Every year in New York in October, countless children are dressed in costumes and go door to door “scaring” people and yell out “trick or treat”. The major attraction on this day is New York’s Greenwich Village Halloween Parade which brings out more than two million spectators.

Zum Schneider

Because German emigrant Sylvester Schneider missed his beloved beer gardens, he simply founded his own in 2000 and quenched his homesickness for original German beer, food and beer garden culture with a restaurant called “Zum Schneider”.

It had its home in Alphabet City for 20 years, will host Oktoberfest, which will be held at the Bushwick Inlet in Greenpoint / Brooklyn from September 30th through October 9th.

Join the celebration with pretzels, hax’n and delicious beer – accompanied by a typical Bavarian live band.

Visit Governors Island

Though Governors Island is no longer a secret spot, it hasn’t lost its charm and remains one of our favorite places in New York. Throughout October, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Manhattan from the island, ride bicycles, and participate in a large variety of events hosted here.

Usually Governors Island closes at the end of October, from 2021 on you check it out even during fall, winter and spring! A ferry ride to the island typically costs $3 but if you decide to come on a Saturday or Sunday before noon, it’ll be free!

New York Film Festival (Through October 16, 2022)

Over 40 different films from very different genres will be presented. Locations include the Walter Reade Theater, the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center and Alice Tully Hall (all at Film at Lincoln Center). In addition, all boroughs are represented, as there are public festival screenings at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem, the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Staten Island.

Columbus Day and the Columbus Day Parade (October 10, 2022)

On Columbus Day, New Yorkers commemorate the “discoverer” of America, Christopher Columbus. Each year, a grand parade is organized in New York, which runs across Fifth Avenue. 35,000 people including bands, fleets, and Marines take part in this parade, which attracts around a million visitors and another million people in front of the TV in their living rooms.

The parade starts at Fifth Avenue on the corner 44th Street. It heads north up to 72nd Street (start: 11:30 AM, end: 3:00 PM). Want to get more information?

Have a good time on a Dinner Cruise

We have already tested many dinner cruises in New York for you. One that we have liked the best of all so far is the Bateaux Dinner Cruise. With a glass roof, the ship heads towards the Brooklyn Bridge. Especially when the weather is nice, the wine or prosecco tastes especially good on the outdoor area of the boat.

If you think the rooftop bar season is over in the fall, then think again! Not in New York! There are many rooftop bars in NYC that offer fresh air even in the cold season. For me, the cloudM Rooftop Bar is one of the most beautiful rooftop bars not only in the Lower East Side, but in all of New York. It is located on the roof of the citizenM New York Bowery Hotel and offers everything that makes a good rooftop bar: a great view, beautiful design and relaxed atmosphere.

The Annual Pumpkin Flotilla at Central Park (October 31, 2022)

Other Events in Harlem & Washington Heights

One of the highlights of the Halloween celebration is the Pumpkin Flotilla. As is gets dark around 6:30 pm, priorly carved pumpkins are released into the Harlem Meer and will be float around for 30 minutes. The spectacle draws hundreds of visitors to the northeast corner of Central Park.

One of the most famous and beautiful photo motifs in autumn in New York is the Pumpkins Arch at Pier 17. From here you can look wonderfully at the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River and take really beautiful photos.

Enjoy the Sunset in Williamsburg

Park in Williamsburg

This beautiful park opened up in Williamsburg in 2018. It’s called Domino park because the former Domino Sugar factory was located at that very spot. Now, it’s filled with greenery, food vendors and a playground for kids. It is located directly on the East River and you have a great view of the city from here. The park invites you to play volleyball or have a picnic.

Experience New York like a local: Willy Wall!

Cruise in Lower Manhattan

This has been my discovery of the last summer – and if you’re in New York until mid-October , you absolutely have to go there. It is the floating boathouse of the Manhattan Sailing Club, is called Honorable William Wall and is located right next to Ellis Island. Especially in the evening, when you look at the illuminated Manhattan, it is just sensational here.

Not far from the Meatpacking District and the High Line, Little Island is one of the newest attractions in New York and is something very special: a park on 280 beautiful tulip-shaped concrete stilts in the Hudson River!

It is one of the most popular fall festivals in New York, bringing you the “biggest names in politics, literature, film, music, art, and pop culture on panels, discussions, and performances” over 7 days.

The New York Coffee Festival (October 7 – 9, 2022)

This annual coffee event takes place in New York again and is obviously for coffee lovers who can’t function in the morning without their caffeine. 

The New York Coffee Festival is New York’s flagship coffee event, celebrating the amazing specialty coffee scene in New York City. All profits are going to charity (Project Waterfall) and visitors get to taste the best coffee in town, meet the artisans and hang out with a bunch of local coffee lovers. 

Walk the High Line

Park in Meatpacking District

The green terrace in the middle of Manhattan is a great experience in fine weather. The decommissioned freight rail track was once overgrown completely as it fell out of use. Based on the plants that grew there, a park was built in homage to the interesting plants that flourish in the city.

Walk from the Meatpacking District (Gansevoort Street) on the High Line towards Uptown and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Since 2014,  Manhattan has been enjoying this highlight and attracts countless visitors every day. There are many lovely cafés, galleries and great bars – and with Gallow Green one of my favorite rooftop bars in the city.

My tip: these are the best spots along the High Line for me.

Spend some time in Little Italy, SoHo and Chinatown

Now known for their many excellent restaurants, shops and tourism, Manhattan ‘s SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown neighborhoods offer the most varied stories of New York City. Take a 2-hour tour with a local guide and discover hidden gems and 19th century buildings.

Bushwick Film Festival (October 19 – 23, 2022)

This 5-day Indie Film Festival is finally back. For the 15 time, the film festival will take place in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn and will offer you many virtual and accompanying events in addition to live screenings.

This event is especially popular with New Yorkers. Take advantage of a visit to get to know Bushwick better. It’s worth it!

Open House New York Weekend Festival (October 21 – 23, 2022)

Visit this celebrated oyster bar aboard the historic wooden schooner, Sherman Zwicker right on the Hudson River. Hudson River Park was able to set up a pretty sweet deal for the Grand Banks, which now has a row of tables for two running along the south side of the pier. By doing so, they are now able to serve drinks within that space.

We love Pier 6 in the summer because it’s home to PILOT Brooklyn , one of our absolute favorite spots in all of New York City.

The annual Harvest Festival celebrates the change from summer to fall. You can expect live music, a small procession, lawn games and much more. You can enjoy all this with the skyline of Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge in the backdrop.

The season is perfect for a museum visit to New York, and the Big Apple really doesn’t lack choices. After the theatrical release of “The Night of Museum” series, (The first movie took place in the New York Museum of Natural History) you really feel like going to the place of the event? In the footsteps of dinosaurs, aborigines and many other historical creatures, the Natural History Museum on Central Park West is always a good idea for a museum outing.

Museum in Gramercy

Fotografiska New York is a wonderful museum in NYC for all art and especially photo art enthusiasts. Originally founded in Stockholm in 2010, the museum also exists in Tallinn (Estonia) and since 2019 in New York.  It is located in a beautiful building from 1892 and extends over 6 floors. In addition to changing exhibitions, there is a restaurant and cocktail bar to round out your visit.

Crossing The Line Festival (September 9 – October 28, 2022)

When I moved to Manhattan, I was so excited to spend October in New York City. After nine years in the desert of Phoenix, I was beyond ready to see the leaves change colors, experience the chill of an autumn breeze, and, of course, celebrate Halloween in the big city. 

In a melting pot of 8.83 million people, you know there are going to be plenty of options for things to do to kick off the fall season. From annual festivals to holiday events and the start of a new sports season, there are countless things to do to make your trip to New York in October a trip to remember. So whether you’re looking for spooky excursions or need a good idea for a fun fall date, I’ve got the best activities in town for your New York City October itinerary.

Is October A Good Time To Visit New York City?

In October, you’ve just missed the hot, humid, tepid weather and are just in time for crisp, cool, light-sweater-wearing weather.

By October, the crowded streets full of summer tourists have thinned out. If you’re planning on visiting any of the big attractions like the Empire State Building, you can expect much shorter lines and fewer people in the background of your photos. Of course, this is still New York City, so there will never be a time when there are no tourists around, but if you’re looking for a month where the weather is beautiful and the crowds are thinner, October is the winner. 

New York City October Weather

October marks the beginning of autumn weather in New York City. By now, the heat and humidity of the summer have burned away and the city is left with a mix of warm and cool days averaging around 64°F. The nights are cooler, hovering around 50°F— the perfect time to break out your comfy fall sweaters. 

There are fewer rainy days than in the summer, with average precipitation in October in New York City being about 3.85 inches, making October one of the driest months of the year. This is great because less rain means more time to go out and explore.

New York Prices in October

October isn’t the most expensive time to visit New York City (that’s June and July), but it isn’t the cheapest either (January and February). While the summer tourists have all gone home, there are still a lot of events happening in New York City in October. There’s the New York Marathon, the many festivals being held, and Halloween festivities, which could persuade companies to raise their prices. 

For the most part, October isn’t the most expensive or the cheapest time to visit New York City. Instead, it falls right in the middle. In my opinion, the beautiful fall weather offsets the extra cost of visiting New York City in October versus a cheaper (and much colder) month like February.

Is it better to visit New York in October or November?

In November, the fall weather is going to drop by about 10°F, becoming closer to 55°F during the day and 40°F at night. The fall leaves will be mostly changed by the end of October, and the trees will start to go bare by mid-November. Most of the fall festivals will be over by November, and holiday events will just be starting.

Overall, the time of year that is best for you to visit New York City really depends on you and why you’re visiting. However, in my opinion, come to New York City in October to witness the changing of the leaves and the crisp, autumn weather, or wait until December when the city is lit up for the holidays.

My top 10 favorite things to do in new york in october.

Anyone who knows me knows that fall is my favorite time of year, and October is my favorite month in the fall. I’m one of those people who insist that autumn (and spooky season) begin no later than September 1— whatever the Farmer’s Almanac says be damned! And I also got married in October, simply because it is the best month ever.

So, with my intense love of all things fall and October, you know I’m going to have my favorite things to do in New York City during October. And these are them:

One of the best things to do in New York City in October is to see the leaves change colors. And one of the best places to do that is in New York’s most famous park— Central Park! 

Towards the end of October through the beginning of November, the ordinarily green leaves in Central Park will begin to turn into multiple shades of yellows, oranges, and reds. This makes the park one of the most epic places to see fall foliage in New York City.

Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park

Who doesn’t love a good renaissance festival? I know I do! This is why going to the Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan is one of my favorite things to do in New York City in October. 

Fort Tryon is a magical forest (figuratively anyway, although probably literally, too, I bet) tucked away in one of the most modern cities in the world. It’s the perfect place for a renaissance festival because the thick forest trees make you feel like you’re in the middle of an enchanted wood. Plus, there’s a castle hidden in the center of the park. As part of the MET, the castle at the Cloisters is where the museum keeps its medieval art.

When to go:  October 2.

Cost:  It’s free!

Location and how to get there:  Located in Hudson Heights and Inwood in Uptown Manhattan. To get there, take the A train to 190th.

Tour the Catacombs at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Visit tunnels that are generally bared off from the public during a 90-minute candlelight tour of the catacombs under St. Patrick’s Cathedral . 

This creepy excursion is perfect for anyone visiting New York City in October who wants to add something a little spookier to their itinerary. 

The catacombs in New York are over 200 years old and are the final resting place for many prominent Catholics from the area. 

When to go:  Friday through Monday by reservation only .

Cost:  $37 per person

Visit the New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden is a pleasure to visit any time of the year, but especially in October because that’s when they break out their fall festivities. During Fall-O-Ween, the Botanical Garden has different fall-based events every weekend and on any day of the week, the Botanical Garden is another great place to see the leaves of New York change color.

When to go:  Check out the Garden’s calendar for a list of special events. 

Cost:  $30 for adults to enter, though special events may cost extra.

Location and how to get there:  2900 Southern Blvd., Bronx, NY 10458. 

Take the B, D, or 4 train to Bedford Park Blvd. Station. From the station, you have a choice of either dating the Bx26 bus to the Garden’s Mosholu Entrance OR walking eight blocks downhill on Bedford Park Blvd to the same entrance.

Day trip to Sleepy Hollow

Made famous by Washington Irving’s gothic horror story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , the town of Sleepy Hollow is actually a real place and it’s not that far away from New York City. Only about an hour’s drive north, Sleepy Hollow is the perfect destination for a day trip from New York City in October. 

Though there isn’t a real headless horseman, there are still plenty of thrilling adventures to be had when visiting Sleepy Hollow. From haunted hayrides to cemetery tours to street fairs, there is something for everyone in this little historic town. 

When to go:  Use this calendar to plan your day trip to Sleepy Hollow.

Cost:  Ultimately, it depends on what you do in town. This excursion could be as cheap as the cost of gas or as expensive as you choose to make it.

New York Comic Con

Get your nerd on at the New York Comic Con. 

New York Comic Con is the second largest comic convention in the United States (following San Diego), and it’s the largest on the east side of the country. Every year they have amazing panelists and vendors and its an awesome opportunity to dress up as your favorite comic book character!

When to go:  This year, the convention is held from October 6 – 9.

Cost:  $67.75 per person, per day.

Take the 7 train to 34th St-Hudson Yards. Or take the A, C, E, or LIRR 34 St-Penn Station.

Apple picking

The best time to pick apples is right when summer fades into fall, which means that early October is the prime apple picking season.

You might be thinking, “You can’t pick apples in New York City.” And, well, you’d be right to think so. In the concrete jungle, there isn’t much room for apple orchards. BUT, less than an hour’s drive away there are plenty of farms ripe for the picking. And, who doesn’t love a beautiful scenic drive, anyway?

Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival

If you’re a foodie then this is an event made for you. NYCWFF is an annual event featuring Food Network personalities like Ted Allen and Rachel Ray. It also includes highly-rated local chefs and restaurants. In the past, the food festival has hosted fun events like a trivia-oriented food fight with Guy Fieri and the competitive Blue Moon Burger Bash.

When to go:  October 13 – 16.

Cost:  Cost is determined by the event you attend.

Location and how to get there: This is a city-wide festival that takes place at different restaurants and locations, depending on the event.

Oktoberfest

So you’re coming to New York City this October instead of Munich, Germany. That’s okay! You can still experience Oktoberfest, right here in the states! 

Watermark Bar hosts an annual Oktoberfest that is more than a month-long, from September through the end of October. Complete with lederhosen, giant pretzels, and, of course, authentic German beer. 

When to go:  September 2nd — October 31st. 

Cost: General admission is free!

Take the 2 or 3 train to Wall Street/ William Street and walk to Watermark Bar from the station. 

Queens County Farm Corn Maze

Like pumpkin spice lattes, corn mazes are a staple of the fall. Queens County Farm Museum is the longest continually farmed site in New York State, and their annual corn maze is the only corn maze in New York City!

When to go:  September 16 through October 29.

Cost:  $13.74 per adult ticket.

It’s easiest to get to the farm by car and they have free parking. You can also take the train. Take the 1 to the E and get off at Kew Gardens-Union Tpke then transfer to the bus at Union Tpke/Queens Blvd then get off at Union Tpke/252 St and walk about a half mile to the farm.

Attend a concert at Madison Square Garden

In the fall, the heat of the summer is over and nightlife in New York City truly takes off. While it’s fun to see a concert at Madison Square Garden any time of the year, this is an exceptional activity to do in the fall.

Built during the Great Depression and made popular by the high-kicking Rockettes, Radio City Music Hall’s art deco walls are a grand piece of New York City history and a fun place to visit in New York City in October. They do more than dance shows (though those are great!). You can see music, comedy, art, and theater on this historic stage.

Attend the New York Burlesque Festival

Sparkling costumes, talented dancers, and an art form that’s been around in the United States for almost 150 years, what’s not to love about burlesque? In October, the annual New York Burlesque Festival celebrates the art of the tease and it’s bound to be a great time.

Go to a farmer’s market

October is the time of harvest and so it’s the perfect time to get some delicious vegetables at a farmer’s market. There are more than 50 markets hosted around the city. 

Visiting the farmers market also makes a great date, because you can pick out all the ingredients for a romantic dinner, then go home and make it with your sweetheart. How cute is that?!

When to go:  There’s a farmer’s market open any day of the week. Use this map to find one near you on a day when you’re available.

Fall foliage cruise on the Hudson

Escape the city life and hop on board a boat for a three-hour tour (I promise this won’t end up like Gilligan!) Feel the wind in your hair as your cruise along the Hudson River. You’ll be able to see the fall colors from a spectacular perspective as you watch the changing leaves from the water.

When to go:  Saturdays and Sundays in October.

Cost:  $106 per person.

Halloween in New York City

In a city as big as New York, you know we’re gonna go big for the spooky season. Halloween is a hit in this town, and so you have plenty of options for thrilling activities to add to your NYC itinerary . 

Village Halloween Parade

Join the Halloween event of the nation at this chilling bash. The Village Halloween Parade started with modest beginnings in 1974 when it was an event for children to show off their costumes. Fast forward to the present day and the Village Halloween Party now draws thousands of people to 6th avenue for a mega monster mash. 

When to go:  October 31 at 7 pm.

I dare you to enter Blood Manor

Are you brave enough to enter New York City’s premiere haunted attraction? A portal has opened in this ghoulish house and has let in all kinds of spooky spirits. Do you think you can get in and out of Blood Manor without dying from fright? 

When to go:  Open all weekends in October and the first weekend in November. 

Cost:  $40 per ticket.

Headless Horseman Haunted Attractions

This terrifying immersive experience has been named #1 in America and boasts of scaring more than 1 million guests. Brave the night as you walk through one or more of ten different haunted attractions located on this historic (and probably actually haunted) manor from 1793. Between corn mazes, haunted houses, and escape rooms, there is something for everyone on this 65-acre property.

When to go:  Open every weekend in October.

Cost:  $49.95 per ticket plus service charge and tax, if purchased online. $64.95 per ticket plus tax if purchased at the door.

This Halloween event must be accessed by car as there is no train or bus route directly to the property.

Roosevelt Island Small Pox Hospital Ruins

This is the closest you will ever get to Arkham Asylum in real life. Blackwell’s Island (now known as Roosevelt Island) in New York City provided a place to keep patients suffering from smallpox far away from the other city residents. In the 1950s, this historic, gothic revival-style building was abandoned and fell into ruin. It was then declared a historic landmark and, though never restored, you can visit the creepy ruins of the old Roosevelt Island Small Pox Memorial Hospital today.

When to go:  24 hours a day, seven days a week!

Location and how to get there: E Rd, Roosevelt Island, New York, NY 10044.

Take the F train to Roosevelt Island and then walk south along West Road to E Road. The hospital will be on your right. Alternatively, you can also take the tram from Manhattan or the ferry from Astoria, Long Island City, or Wall Street.

Merchant’s House Museum

While the two “haunted” attractions listed above might have actors trained to scare your pants off, how do you feel about visiting a home with real ghosts? The Tredwell family lived in the Merchant’s House Museum long before it was ever a museum, and some say they never left. During the month of October, you can take a candlelight ghost tour of this real-life haunted mansion.

When to go:  Tours are available year-round, but the candlelight ghost tour is only available four nights of the year, from October 26 through 29.

Cost:  $45 per person.

Greenwich Village Ghost Tour

Get to know the haunted history of New York City and possibly even see a ghost in one of New York’s most famous parks. This intimate ghost tour takes a literary twist as the tour guide gives you the spooky inside scoop on Edgar Allen Poe.

Haunted farm in Queens County Farm

One of the best family-friendly Halloween events in the city, wear your costume and go trick-or-treating with farm animals on the 47-acre farm at Queens County Farm Museum . 

When to go: Sunday, October 30 from 11 am to 4 pm.

Cost:  $20 per person. Free for kids 3 and under.

It’s easiest to get to the farm by car and they have free parking. You can also take the train. Take the 1 to the E and get off at Kew Gardens – Union Tpke then transfer to the bus at Union Tpke/Queens Blvd then get off at Union Tpke/252 St and walk about a half mile to the farm.

Jack O’Lantern Festival

Imagine walking through an 18th-century landscape while listening to an original soundtrack and watching 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins light up against the darkness of the night. Well, if that sounds like your thing, you don’t have to imagine it— just visit the Jack O’Lantern Festival in Hudson Valley! Plus, all proceeds go to the Historic Hudson Valley non-profit, so you’re doing a good deed by going!

When to go:  September 16 — November 20. 

Cost:  $44 per person.

Location and how to get there: 525 S Riverside, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520.

It’s easiest to get to the festival by car since the drive is an hour north of the city. But, you can also get there by train if you’re willing to make a few transfers.

Take the 1 to Marble Hill-335 St then transfer to the Marble Hill bus. You’ll get off at Croton-Harmon then walk about a mile to the festival.

Nighttime excursions in New York City in October

The weather in New York City in October at night is perfect. It’s just chilly enough for a jacket, but not too cold that it’s uncomfortable. And the New York lights at night are mmwha! *chefs kiss*. There’s a reason they call this the “city that never sleeps”. Add a few of these nighttime excursions to your itinerary list to make sure you soak up all that New York City has to offer. 

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks open up

There are few more iconic images of New York City at Christmas time than the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center. But did you know that it’s actually in October that most of New York City’s ice skating rinks open up? Skip the crowds and go ice skating in October. It’s the perfect nighttime excursion.

When to go: Any day of the week starting in mid to late October.

New York City At Night Tour Bus

Stroll through one of the coolest parks in New York City, The High Line (a park created on an old train track), before hopping aboard a bus to see New York’s most famous monuments like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and the neighborhoods of SoHo and Chinatown illuminated in the night.

When to go:  Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

New York City Speakeasy Tour

In the 1920s the government banned the selling and drinking of alcohol and speakeasies became popular. Since then, they are still popular with many clubs following the “secret bar” theme. But those aren’t what you’ll be visiting with this tour. Instead, you’ll get to drink in some of the original speakeasies that were established a hundred years ago during the prohibition era.

When to go:  Monday and Wednesday nights.

Cost:  $36 per person.

Directly outside 50th St station next to the Gershwin Theater.

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

Built in 1883, The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Did you know that the entire thing is walkable? In fact, it’s sort of a New York City right of passage to walk across the bridge. And if you walk the Brooklyn Bridge at night, you’ll see a spectacular, one-of-a-kind view of the New York City skyline.

When to go:  The Brooklyn Bridge is accessible 24 hours a day!

Location and how to get there: Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038.

On the Manhattan side, take the J or Z train to Chambers Street, or the 2 or 3 train to Fulton Street.

On the Brooklyn Side, take the A or C train to High Street.

If you don’t want to walk the bridge, you can rent a bike and bike across the bridge instead!

Empire State Building Lookout

The Empire State building is one of the best places to see the New York City skyline. But if you visit on an October night, not only are you avoiding major crowds, but you also get to see the city at night in all its sparkling glory, which is pretty dang cool.

When to go:  The Empire State Building is open until midnight and you’ll want at least an hour for your visit. So make sure you visit no later than 11 pm.

Take the 1, 2, or 3 train to 34th St – Penn Station. Or take the 4 or 6 to 33rd Street Station. Then walk to the Empire State Building from the station.

Free Things to Do in New York City in October

Hey, I get it. Traveling is expensive. That’s why I wanted to include these October-exclusive New York City experiences that you can do totally for free!

Picnic at a park under the changing leaves

Possibly the best thing about fall is when the leaves start to change color. In New York City, that happens in October. So, if you’re in the Big Apple in the fall, make sure you take advantage of the weather and enjoy a picnic in one of the many parks where you can fully enjoy the changing of the seasons. Some of my favorite picnicking parks include Astoria Park, Fort Tryon Park, and Prospect Park.

When to go:  Mid-October when the leaves are at their peak in color-changing brightness.

Cost:  Free! Or, at least as much as you choose to spend on your picnic.

Join a Juggling Class at Bryant Park

Bryant Park offers a bunch of free activities throughout the year, but every October they offer free juggling classes. Learn a new skill and pick up juggling at Bryant Park!

When to go:  Use this calendar to pick a juggling class day that works for you.

Join a Birding Tour at Bryant Park

Another fun, unique, and most importantly, free thing to do at Bryant Park in October is to join a birding tour. Did you know that many species of birds migrate to New York in the fall? Join this free activity to learn how to spot them!

Take the A, C, or E to 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Terminal. Or the S or 7 train to 42nd Street Times Square. Walk to the park from the station.

Kayaking at Pier 26

Though kayaking is typically considered more of a summer thing, you can still kayak at Pier 26 until October 10— and you can do it for free!

When to go:  Weekends until October 10.

Location and how to get there: Pier 26 is located on the southern end of Hudson River Park on the Westside Highway just north of N Moore St. 

Take the 1 train to Franklin Street, or the A, C, or E train to Canal Street.

October is a major time for events in New York City. It’s the perfect time of year because summer is over and amazing weather is overtaking the city. Here are some of the best events in New York City in October that you do not want to miss out on.

For the entire month of October, New York City’s architectural community hosts more than 100 tours, educational lectures, and films focusing on the design of one of the most famous cities in the world. For this month only, you can get behind-the-scenes peeks at the buildings that frame New York City’s famous skyline.

Off-Broadway Week

When to go:  Off-Broadway Week is happening in the first week of October.

The New Yorker Festival is a place where all the greatest New York minds get together. Enjoy a mix of live conversations, performances, and screenings from experts in politics, the arts, journalism, and entertainment.

Open House New York

New York architecture is known for two things— skyscrapers and charming brownstones. During Open House New York in October, you can gain access to both. These places are normally closed off to the public.

New York Film Festival

See New York City’s film community’s most epic films at New York Film Festival before they make it big. In the past, famous filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Pedro Almodóvar, and Martin Scorsese have premiered their films at this festival, held in New York City every October.

NewFest LGBTQ+ Film Festival

New York City October Sporting Events 

A new season, a new time for sports. I’m not much of a sports enthusiast myself, but even I can’t deny that there are some pretty sweet sporting events happening in New York City starting in October.

The New York Knicks aren’t just a sports team based in New York. They’re a part of New York History. Join rabid Knicks fans at Madison Square Garden for an enthusiastic game of basketball. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a celebrity sitting courtside!

If you’ve ever been to a hockey game, you know how intense it can be. Come cheer on the Blueshirts (what fans affectionately call the New York Rangers) when they play at Madison Square Garden.

New York Islanders 

Rivals to the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders are also local to New York City. Try to buy tickets for a night when the two teams play against each to see the stands filled with local fans in an absolute uproar. 

Football

Founded in 1959 at the Titans of New York, the team, now renamed the New York Jets, has become a staple in American football. They have arguably one of the most intense fan bases in the entire league, so you know their home games are going to be enthusiastic.

New York Giants 

One of the most popular teams in the NFL, the New York Giants share a home stadium with the New York Jets. Though the Jets aren’t as big of rivals to the Giants as, say, The Eagles, the Jets-Giants rivalry is not one to be taken lightly. Though they rarely play against each other during the regular season, if you happen to catch a game where both teams are playing, it is sure to be a great time.

What to do in New York City in October if it Rains

October is one of the dryer months in New York City. But if you’re visiting a town on the upper East Coast which means there’s still a good chance of precipitation on at least one of the days on your trip. So, in case that happens, here are a few ways you can stay dry and still enjoy your time in New York City in October.

See a Broadway show

If you happen to be visiting New York during Broadway or Off-Broadway Week, then you can get two-for-one tickets. But, no matter what time you come to New York, or how many times you’ve been to New York, seeing a Broadway show is always a great plan, especially if it’s raining outside.

Go to a bar with live music

If it’s raining outside, then bring the party inside! Don’t let the rain stop you from hitting the nightlife. Instead, find a place where you can hang out for the evening, and bonus if they’ve got live music. 

Saint Tuesdays in lower Manhattan, Haswell Greens in Midtown, and the Anyway Cafe in the East Village all have great vibes and play music every night.

Enjoy the view from a rooftop bar

If you’re looking for a little more elegance, go to a rooftop bar and enjoy the view of the city when it rains. From the roof of a building, you’ll be able to see the shimmering skyline glittering in the rain.

The Panorama Room on the 18th floor of Roosevelt Island’s Graduate Hotel offers stunning views of the city through double-story windows that will block out the rain so you don’t get wet!

Visit a museum

Like seeing a Broadway show, a museum visit should be on every New York tourist’s itinerary, no matter how many times you’ve been to the city. Plus, a museum visit is a great experience to have when it rains because most of them are indoors!

If you’ve already been to the MET, the Cloisters, and the Natural History Museum, try out some of the lesser known and more unique museums like Mmuseumm , the New York Transit Museum , and the Museum of Sex .

Munch away at a food hall

If it’s raining too hard and you don’t want to explore the outdoors, but you still want to have a great New York experience, try exploring a food hall. You’ll come hungry and leave with a full belly and fond memories. 

Try the Canal Steet Market near Chinatown, Citizens NY near Hudson Yards, or Essex Market on the Lower East Side.

Where to Stay in New York City in October 2024

If you’re visiting New York City for the first time, I highly recommend staying in Midtown Manhattan as that is where most of the experiences are. This will also put you near lots of subway stations so you can easily get to other boroughs and experiences for your New York in October adventure.

Getting around New York City in October

The best way to get around New York City in October is by subway, as the city’s intricate underground train system can take you just about anywhere in the city. 

It’s super easy to use the subway if you have a credit or debit card with tapping ability as you just need to tap your card on the turnstyle and it will let you through. Each train ride is $2.75 and includes transfers as long as you don’t exit the station.

You can also take an Uber or a taxi. Or, stay in one of these hotels with free bicycle rentals:

The Jane Hotel in Greenwich Village.

The Maritime Hotel in Chelsea.

Arlo Midtown in Hell’s Kitchen.

If you are planning to do a day trip out of the city and need to rent a car, you can get a great deal through Expedia .

What to Pack for Your Trip to New York City in October 2024

The weather in New York City in October is beautiful and hovers around 65°F. So, you’ll want to pack some light sweaters or a jacket, but there’s no need for winter coats or bulky sweaters.

In general, I think it’s best to pack outfits that can be layered so you can add on when you get cold and shed layers when you get hot. Typically, I like to bring a flannel like this one so I can tug it on when it’s chilly, but otherwise keep it tied around my waist and out of my way.

Essential Packing Items for New York City in October

In addition to packing a few super cute outfits for photogenic pictures against the red and yellow leaves, I highly recommend these additional items for your trip to New York City in October. These items are, in my opinion, essential for any trip, but especially for a trip to a big city, like New York.

Rolling suitcase

If you’ve ever traveled to a big city before then you know how much easier it is if you have a suitcase with multidirectional spinning wheels. It’s easier to navigate on busy streets, especially if you have to take a train or walk to your accommodations. This suitcase by Coollife is the one that I use and I love it because it’s sturdy, durable, and comes in multiple sizes that stack inside one another like Russain dolls for easy storage. 

An anti-theft bag or purse

This is an essential item, especially if you plan to go somewhere crowded like Timesquare. Thieves often try to slash bags by the straps and then make off with the entire bag. Not only is this bag by Travelon have anti-slasher, reinforced straps, but it also has a zipper that locks so someone can’t slyly unzip your bag without you noticing.

Travel paperwork organizer

This one is especially important if you’re visiting New York from outside of the U.S. A travel paperwork organizer is a great way to make sure all your important travel paperwork stays safe.

Packing Cubes

I’ve been a wanderluster for quite some time now and I’m almost embarrassed about how long it took me to hop on the travel cube train. But, I finally did and I am so glad I got myself a set. These babies save you so much space in your suitcase, and they help you stay organized, too!

The weather is gorgeous, the leaves are changing colors, and there are so many festivals and events that happen in New York City in October. Open House New York various locations; Oct 15, 16; free-$5 The Metropolitan Opera House is one of this year’s brand-new additions to the Open House New York, the weekend-long festival where more than 250 fascinating sites across New York open their doors to the public. The incredibly popular two-day event offers glimpses into spaces that are usually off limits to the public, from sky-high rooftop gardens to palatial apartments.

Kickoff to Fall Queens County Farm Museum; 11am; free Fact: Nothing says autumn like an intricate corn maze, wooden bins filled to the brim with just-picked apples and a pumpkin patch overflowing with gourds. All three of these iconic seasonal staples are present at this annual festival, which celebrates the season’s return to Queens County Farm Museum. Tap your toes to country & western band Savannah Sky while sipping crisp apple cider, get lost in the Amazing Maize Maze, and watch the farm’s flock of Cotswold and Romney sheep get a new hairdo during a shearing demonstration. The Village Halloween Parade Line up at Sixth Avenue and Canal St.  The parade goes down Sixth Ave from Spring St to 16th St; Oct 31; free Before you head out to some of the best Halloween parties in NYC, start with the basics: namely, the world’s largest pumpkin day procession, the Village Halloween Parade in NYC. With over 50,000 zombies, giant puppets and Donald Trumps taking to the streets, you may need a little help with navigation. So dress in your best Halloween costume ideas (or else you won’t be allowed to march), work on your Halloween makeup and get ready for the walk of your life.

Hilarious comedy shows

Gypsy Danger and the Baldwins Peoples Imrpov Theater; 8pm; $10 Two of the Peoples Improv Theater's house teams join forces in Flatiron every Sat night: Gypsy Danger performs an improvised movie and the Baldwins, one of PIT's longest-running groups, serves up its signature longform stylings. 

Nothing Important! One and One; Every Friday night; free One and One hosts this local talent showcase every Friday, with Phil Stamato, Daniel Raderstrong and Matt Leary wrangling acts from across town to headline the bill. Past guests have included Myq Kaplan, Shane Torres and Aparna Nancherla. After the show, performers get the weekend started by joining the audience for a lively afterparty. 

Tonight’s Special with Shane Shane Sid Gold’s Request Room; Oct 4; suggested donation $5 This bizarre improv-variety show puts you in complete control over hard-working one-man act Shane. At the start of the night, audience members are given a “menu” of jokes, songs, video clips and shticks for Shane to perform in the order and style of their choosing. The night ends with piano karaoke. Make sure you give this guy a tip—and a drink.

Comedienne Project The Standing Room; Oct 12; $10 Sharp-tongued stand-ups Katie Hannigan and Corinne Fisher challenged themselves to produce hilarious stand-up that didn't revolve around sex, and the results were surprisingly hilarious. Now, they welcome other ladies to take the test, and even ring the bell if a guest's material slips into prurient territory.  

The Disembodied Hand that Fisted Everyone to Death! The Musical Reckless Theatre; Oct 15, Oct 29; $8 This standout from the 2015 Bad Theater Festival crawled its way to a life of sold-out shows at the PIT and Reckless theaters. If it sounds obscene, that's because it is:  The Disembodied Fist  tells the story of a reanimated hand that terrorizes a frat house in 1956. Along the way, there's plenty of social critique, musical parody and sexual frivolity to keep all five fingers busy. You'd be horrified if you weren't too busy laughing. 

Can't-miss LGBT events

Big Bush Heavy Woods; Oct 4, 18; free Queer nightlife ringleader Image Object hosts this twice-monthly throwdown for women of all orientations and identifications. Late-night happy hour specials and booming dance music ensures a rowdy, delirious night for all. 

CucTalk This n’ That (TNT); Oct 4, 18; free Droll drag queen and cabaret musician Hamm Samwich brings her dry humor to TNT every first and third Tuesday. She'll welcome comedians, queens and entertainment buddies to speak on politics, pop culture and other issues of the moment, and take to the piano whenever it suits her.

That Golden Girls Show: A Puppet Parody DR2 Theatre; various days in October; $69–$99 This is happening. Hot on the heels of his  Thank You For Being a Friend  live show, Jonathan Rockefeller unveils an all-new stage tribute to Miami's fab four, with puppets. Relive the big-earringed, heavy-sleeved glory of Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia through darling felt effigies at this love letter to one of the greatest (and gayest) TV series of all time.  

Delicious food and drink opportunities 

NYC Wine and Food Festival various locations; Oct 13-16; various prices Now in its ninth year, the NYCWFF is about as star-studded as food events get, with a myriad of tastings, dinners and classes hosted by Food Network and Cooking Channel personalities including Giada De Laurentiis, Aaron Sanchez and Anne Burrell. Highlights include a late-night sushi party with Masaharu Morimoto and a Nordic breakfast with Claus Meyer.

LUCKYRICE Slurpfest Astor Center; Oct 20; $100 Slurp four bowls of ramen at this speed dating–style dinner: you’ll have 13 minutes to attack each soup, served by four noodle houses from across the U.S.

Cider Week various locations; Oct 21–31; various prices There are many types of apples (Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Granny Smith), but the best variation of everyone’s favorite autumnal fruit is clearly the fermented kind. Porktoberfest SolarOne; Oct 22; $55–$75 The city’s annual Cider Week kicks off with porky bites from the likes of Jimmy’s No. 43 and Blue Smoke, paired with more than 20 crisp, autumnal ciders.

NYC Sweet Treats Bazaar Grand Bazaar NYC; Oct 23; free Uptown's weekly Grand Bazaar shows off its sweet tooth with this dessert spread, featuring artisanal macarons, pumpkin pies, ice cream sandwiches and more from 25 city pastry chefs and chocolatiers.

Major move and theater premieres 

The Birth of a Nation ; hits theaters Oct 7 The film itself deserves consideration, even if its Oscar chances are kaput. Nate Parker’s rapturous and rousing historical drama premiered to a lengthy standing ovation at Sundance; it’s still a massive accomplishment for its writer-director-star. And in bringing the Nat Turner–led slave rebellion of 1831 to screen, the film fumes with timely fury. 

The Girl on the Train ; hits theaters Oct 7 A new Gone Girl (we hope), this thriller has a literary pedigree, a well-telegraphed twist (no spoilers here) and a fascinating actor in the central role, Emily Blunt, whom we’d love to see kicked to the top of the Oscar conversation. The less we say about the plot, the better, but director Tate Taylor’s previous film was the extremely underrated Get on Up , which bodes well.

Voyage of Time ; hits theaters Oct 7 You might ask yourself: What does director Terrence Malick ( The Tree of Life ) really know about planetary science and evolution? Did he go to school for it? Is an IMAX documentary really in his wheelhouse? Don’t ask that. Ask instead: Can I afford to miss a movie that looks this breathtakingly beautiful? Or one that’s in IMAX and narrated by Brad Pitt? 

Mascots ; hits theaters Oct 13 We can’t remain calm: There’s a new mockumentary coming from the one-and-only Christopher Guest ( Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman ). Guest’s first feature in a decade is a chronicle of a national competition for those folks who zip themselves up into costumes at sporting events and go nuts. Naturally, this requires a certain intensity: Parker Posey returns, as does Fred Willard, Bob Balaban, Jennifer Coolidge and the whole Guest troupe.

Moonlight ; hits theaters Oct 21 The tricky coming of age of a poor Miami kid is the subject of Barry Jenkins finely etched indie portrait of African-American life, an exquisite accomplishment. It’s set in Miami, but don’t expect  Scarface . Rather, the drama follows a quiet African American boy, tough but vulnerable in his crack-ridden neighborhood. Over the years, he grows up. This is the unmissable film of the fall. 

American Pastoral ; hits theaters Oct 21 Is this the year of Philip Roth adaptations or what? After Indignation comes Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut, in which he tries his hand at Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel. The trailer for the postwar drama looks like a million bucks and hints at sharp performances from stars McGregor, Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Connelly, playing troubled members of a crumbling family on the outs.

Inferno ; hits theaters Oct 28 Tom Hanks’s museum-prone mystery hero Robert Langdon is back, seven years after Angels & Demons —even if his hairline continues to withdraw faster than his prior female costars. This time, his counterpart, a doctor, is played by Felicity Jones (star of the forthcoming Rogue One ). They’re on the trail of some sinister plotters; no doubt plenty of mansplaining is involved.

Rings ; hits theaters Oct 28 Call it a mark of our attachment to the frightening 2002’s Naomi Watts–starring original (itself a remake) that we’re ready for another go-around with the cursed VHS tape. This sequel doesn’t have major stars—or any stars, really—and it’s been delayed a zillion times. Still, that girl with the stringy black hair comes out of the television nicely.  

Awesome live music and concerts 

Blood Orange  at Terminal 5; Oct 1; $30 An alt-pop visionary with production credits for Solange, Sky Ferreira and a host of others, Devonté Hynes' come a long way since rocking Hot Topic looks in a dance-punk band called Test Icicles. At this gig, you'll hear from his latest ’80s-inspired soul-pop masterpiece, Freetown Sound , an expansive soul-searching journey that winds its way through Hyne's familial lineage in Sierra Leone and back. 

Sigur Rós at Radio City; Oct 5. Kings Theatre; Oct 6, 7; $79.50 Icelandic post-rock crew Sigur Rós craft gorgeously eery soundscapes with bowed electric guitar, immense heaps of reverb and nonsense lyrics that sound strangely universal. The celestial sounds turned surprisingly boisterous and aggressive on the band's latest record, Kveikur , so expect an otherworldly concert by turns elegantly beautiful and overwhelmingly turbulent. 

Drake + Future at Barclays; Oct 11, 12; $49.50-$179.50 Expect selections from these two rap heavyweights' recent acclaimed split mixtape  What a Time to be Alive  at this four-night stint at New York's massive Barclay Center. Viral hit “Jumpman” is sure to be on the menu, alongside a healthy dose of tunes from Drake's fourth studio album,  Views .  

Gojira at Terminal 5; Oct 23; $29.50, at the door $30 Gojira gigs behind its latest album, Magma , which capitalizes on the French extreme-metal band's strongest trait: a rare balance of technical complexity and melodic catchiness. Prepare to headbang.

Sia + Miguel + AlunaGeorge  at Barclays; Oct 25; $75-$665 Critically acclaimed R&B crooner Miguel and futuristic soul-pop duo AlunaGeorge join Aussie superstar Sia on this thrillingly talent-packed stadium bill. Expect powerhouse vocals and ascendingly majestic songcraft.

Spectacular art shows

Agnes Martin Solomon R Guggenheim Museum; Oct 6–Jan 11, $25, seniors (65+) and students with valid ID $18, children under 12 free Agnes Martin was arguably the most important women artist in American art history (1912–2004) after Georgia O’Keeffe, and also one of the most important painters of the 20th century, period. That’s one of the takeaways from this first comprehensive career survey since her death. Another is that while her geometric compositions of subtly colored grids, bands and lines are hailed as precursors of Minimalism, she considered herself an Abstract Expression.

 “Max Beckmann in New York” Metropolitan Museum of Art; Oct 19–Feb 20, suggested donation $25, seniors $17, students $12, members and children under 12 free Max Beckmann (1884–1950), one of the most prominent modernist painters of Weimar-era Germany, spent the last year of his life in New York City, the final stop in a 12-year journey of exile that began when he fled Hitler in 1937. The Met is an appropriate venue for this show: Beckmann died from a fatal heart attack on the corner of 69th Street and Central Park West just as he was making his way to the museum to see his freshly-installed canvas, Self-Portrait in Blue Jacket .

“Mark Leckey: Containers and Their Drivers” MoMA PS1; Oct 23–Mar 5, suggested donation $10, seniors and students $5 This British Conceptualist bad boy and 2008 Turner Prize winner takes a wry view of culture high and low with ambitious installations, videos and lecture/performances that serve up a collagelike dissection of media with a side order of class critique.

“Kerry James Marshall: Mastry” The Met Breuer; Oct 25–Jan 29, suggested donation $25, seniors $17, students $12, members and children under 12 free Emerging in the 1990s, Kerry James Marshall, one of the leading contemporary painters of his generation, depicts the African-American experience through a prism of feeling and appreciation for the basic humanity of black people as individuals with hopes and aspirations.

"Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest” The New Museum Of Contemporary Art; Oct 26–Jan 8, $16, seniors $14, students $10, children under 18 free. Thu 7–9pm pay as you wish with a suggested minimum of $2 This Swiss video artist’s provocative productions started out in the late 1980s with depictions of female subjects committing various social transgressions (a women smashing car windows, for example, an image later appropriated by Beyoncé). More recently, she’s focused on trippy, immersive, 360-degree installations backed by hypnotic soundtracks. 

Brilliant dance performances 

Fall for Dance 2016 New York City Center; Sept 26–Oct 8; $15 The super-affordable festival is a smorgasbord for dance lovers. Each evening features a sampling of international superstars and local favorites. This year, 20 companies and artists take part, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Hong Kong Ballet, Jessica Lang Dance and flamenco star Fqrruquito. The lineup includes multiple U.S. or world premieres. 

Shen Wei Dance Arts:  Neither  BAM Howard Gilman Opera House Theater; Oct 5–8; $15–$65 A towering figure in contemporary dance, who choreographed for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Shen now joins the Next Wave Festival with a commissioned work set to Morton Feldman and Samuel Beckett's 1977 opera. (Beckett's text is only 16 lines long.) Shen also designed the piece, in collaboration with lighting master Jennifer Tipton.

Company XIV: Paris Irondale Center; Oct 13–Nov 12; $25–$150 Choreographer Austin McCormick premieres an elaborate adults-only haute-burlesque version of the Greek myth of Paris, who got caught in the middle of an divine apple fight and would up sparking the Trojan War. Baroque design and operatic musical elements give a fancy gloss to the seduction.

American Ballet Theatre Fall 2016 David H. There is never a shortage of things to do in the City That Never Sleeps, but fall in New York City is especially enchanting. During October, Central Park becomes awash with brilliant red and gold leaves as restaurants around town serve up all pumpkin everything. With temperatures staying mostly between the 50s and high 70s Fahrenheit all month long, you can step out in a cozy sweater without having to worry about getting too chilly or too hot.

October is considered the shoulder season—it's much quieter than in the summer and over the holidays—but there's plenty going on regardless. The month kicks off with a "Columbus Day" parade and a city-wide open house, and ends with the biggest Halloween parade in the country.

New York City Weather in October

Although it can get a little chilly toward the end of the month—especially around Halloween—the average high is 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 Celsius) and lows linger around 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius). With warm days, chilly nights, and usually fewer than seven days of the month experiencing rainfall, October is perhaps the most comfortable time to visit the Big Apple. Being the driest month of the year, it's also one of the least humid, perfect for surveying the rooftop bar scene, attending an outdoor concert venue, or strolling through Central Park .

What to Pack

October visitors may still be able to get away with short-sleeved shirts during the day; however, sweaters or medium-weight jackets may be necessary in the evenings, especially as the month goes on. Footwear can make or break a trip, so make sure yours is comfortable enough for walking expansive city blocks. Although New York is the U.S. capital of fashion, the locals pair almost every outfit with sneakers (pack a nicer pair of shoes in your bag if you have to). Closed-toed and water-resistant shoes are ideal.

October Events in New York City

With "Columbus Day" celebrations opening the month and Halloween parties closing it out, October is packed with fun happenings. However, you don't have to visit during these (crowded) holiday weekends to enjoy some unique events.

• "Columbus Day" Parade : Containing all the necessary elements of a great parade—marching bands, minor celebrities, floats, etc.—without the crowds and chaos, this "Columbus Day" extravaganza is centered around the city's Italian-American culture. In 2020, the parade will take place virtually on WABC October 12.
• New Yorker Festival : Celebrate all things NYC with workshops, roundtable discussions, readings, and performances led by experts in politics, arts, and culture. Hosted by The New Yorker , the festival will feature Dr. Anthony Fauci, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, author Margaret Atwood, and more virtually October 5 to 11, 2020.
• Open House New York : Every year, this city-wide open house event allows participants to explore spots of architectural significance which aren't usually open to the public. According to the organizers, 2020's event will be a "hybrid of virtual experiences and outdoor self-guided explorations" taking place October 17 and 18.
• New York Wine & Food Festival : This indulgent weekend features more than 80 events, including regional wine tastings, dinners hosted by celebrity chefs, mixology workshops, and more. This year's event will be held mostly virtually (with digital cooking classes by Martha Stewart, Giada De Laurentiis, and Rachael Ray) from October 2 to 11.
• Halloween Extravaganza and Procession of the Ghouls : Watch (or join into) this participatory parade held every October at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. The event usually includes a screening of an old-school horror movie, sometimes accompanied by a local organist. In 2020, the event has been postponed.

October Travel Tips

• Whether you take a sightseeing cruise to enjoy the changing leaves or just go for a walk in one of New York City's many parks, the sights and scents of autumn are a true pleasure. NYC is within a few hours' drive of some of the best locations in New England to see fall foliage : Long Island, the Poconos, or the Berkshires in Massachusetts.
• The "Columbus Day" holiday—which always falls on the second Monday of the month—allows a three-day weekend for some. On the downside, this also means higher flights and hotel prices.
• Try to wrap up your trip before the annual New York City Marathon takes place. This race attracts more than 53,000 runners and the course covers all five boroughs, making transportation virtually impossible the first weekend in November.

Europe's travel strikes: Flight and train disruption you can expect in May

Our guide is updated as soon as a new European strike is announced.

Strikes are a regular occurrence in Europe, as employees withhold their labour to fight for better pay and conditions.

Walkouts are sometimes planned months ahead but others are announced last minute, showing that it always pays to check before you travel.

Luckily, we have gathered all of the strike information together below.

UK: Heathrow Border Force worker strikes in April and May

After Border Force workers at London's Heathrow Airport staged a walkout at the start of the month, asmaller scale 'work to rule' strike between 3-18 May could cause further disruption as staff only do the bare minimum required of their contracts.

The UK's biggest airport is bracing for another strike in May when almost 800 staff in various departments could walk out over outsourcing plans. The strike was initially set to start on 7 May but has been suspended for two days to allow for negotiations. If an agreement is not reached, it will now run from 9****-13 May and it could cause serious disruption.

Gatwick Airport: Catering strikes called off

Passengers on easyJet and TUI flights departing from London's Gatwick Airport will no longer be left hungry as Dnata catering workers have reached an agreement with the airlines, securing the reinstatement of their shift allowances and full back pay.

Around 100 workers, including HGV drivers and warehouse workers, had threatened to walk out for 12 days in April and May. 

Train strikes in May

Train drivers on some of the UK's busiest commuter routes will go on strike on 7-9 May in a long-standing dispute over pay and working conditions.

Different operators will walk out on different days, including c2c, Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Southeastern, South Western Railway and Thameslink and Southern on Tuesday; Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, Chiltern, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, GWR and West Midlands Trains on Wednesday; and LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express on Thursday.

Members of train drivers' union ASLEF are also taking part in an overtime ban from 6-11 May, which is likely to mean cancellations on some lines.

Iceland: Strike threatened at Keflavík Airport

Workers at Keflavík Airport have threatened to strike from 9-12 May if a labour dispute is not resolved.

Flight disruption is expected as security workers plan a series of four-hour stoppages from 4-8am each day. An indefinite overtime ban for union members starting at 4pm on Thursday could cause further disruption.

Italy: Train strikes cause disruption across the country

Trenitalia and Trenord will be hit by a national strike on 19 May when engine staff will walk out.

Further regional train strikes are planned in Naples on 10 May, Friuli Venezia Giulia on 17 May and Liguria on 27-28 May, among others.

where engine personnel will walk off the job for 23 hours from 03.00 on 19 May to 02.00 on 20 May.

France: Vueling staff to strike over bank holiday

French cabin crew with the SNPNC-FO and CGT unions are threatening to strike from 8-12 May . 90 per cent of cabin crew and 95 per cent of cabin managers are expected to take part.

The walkout will affect flights with Spanish budget airline Vueling. The dispute over working conditions could continue into next month if workers' demands are not met.

Could strikes hit the Paris Olympics?

CGT-RATP union members announced a seven-month strike notice from 5 February to 9 September that could hit the Ile-de-France bus and metro network - including during this summer's Olympic Games.

However, the French Senate adopted a bill on 9 April to allow the state to ban transport strikes for set periods each year to avoid disruption during major events like Paris 2024. It also calls for more advance warning of strikes and increased minimum service obligations.

The bill faces opposition and must be adopted by the French National Assembly before it becomes law.

Workers at the state-owned public transport company say they are walking out over pay.

Germany: Threat of train strikes ends

On 25 March, Deutsche Bahn reached an agreement with Germany’s GDL train drivers' union, bringing an end to five months of negotiations and strikes. 

The deal means that GDL will abstain from strikes until at least February 2026.
