trout fishing season in Tasmania
The trout fishing season in tasmania runs from the first weekend in august until the last weekend in april..
With snow and ice still common around the Highlands area, trips to lowland lakes are more common during the opening of the season yet still produce some great fishing opportunities despite the lower temperatures.
The mid-season of trout fishing in Tasmania, from October through to November, opens up a larger range of fishing opportunities with the peak of the dry fly and sight fishing season presenting itself around December to February.
Anglers should note however that Trout can become difficult to catch during this time as bright weather prevails, making accurate and subtle casting a must.
March to April in Tasmania brings a cooling of temperatures, allowing for a more targeted approach to fly fishing across the state – before the off-season of trout fishing in Tasmania ranges from May through to July; coinciding with the trout spawning period.

Extra Tour Information: Variations to the above tours are easily arranged, just email us your request and we’ll work things out from there. Exact locations are usually chosen on the day of the tour to best manage environmental and climatic conditions, in pursuit of the best fly fishing experience possible. We have, however, just purchased a quality Lake Drifting Boat that was used in the World Fly Fishing championships and is available on request for an extra $100.00. We also work closely with boating guides and can arrange guided fly fishing tours from fully registered boats with quality registered guides on request.
We encourage catch and release fishing to our valued clients and guests.

Two people rescued by kayakers more than an hour after their dinghy capsized off Tasmania's north-west
- In short: Two people were out fishing on their dinghy when it flipped and left them stranded 2 kilometres from shore.
- The pair spent 90 minutes in the water and couldn't swim back to shore due to a strong tide as the harbour emptied.
- Luckily, two nearby kayakers eventually heard their cries for help and came to the rescue.
Two boaties whose dinghy flipped are "incredibly fortunate" to be rescued after kayakers heard their cries for help and found them stranded 2 kilometres from shore, police say.
A man and a woman in their 40s were fishing near Spy Island in Tasmania's north-west on Sunday when around 12:30pm, their boat capsized, throwing them into the water.
They were stranded 2 kilometres offshore, unable to swim to safety due to the strong tide as the harbour emptied.
Both were wearing life vests, but due to the boat sinking, could not access any other safety equipment, including flares.
'I saw two heads bobbing in the water,' kayaker recounts rescue
It was around 90 minutes later when two nearby kayakers heard them cry for help and alerted authorities.
The kayakers were Launceston teacher Gillian Pitt and her husband Stuart Auckland.
Ms Pitt said she heard a high-pitched whistle and cries for help but could not see where the voices were coming from.
"I was yelling out: 'Where are you? Where are you?' and then I saw two heads bobbing in the water," Ms Pitt said.
She and her husband decided that she would stay with the couple while he returned to shore to seek help, as neither of them had brought mobile phones out on the water.
Ms Pitt said she decided to start paddling and was able to tow the pair through the water about 800 metres to the rocky outcrop of Spy Island.
"I didn't think I'd get there but I just kept grunting away. You know what adrenaline does. You just do it," she said.
In the meantime, her husband had returned to shore and borrowed a phone to raise the alarm, and a family fishing nearby had heard the distress call and sped to Spy Island to assist in the rescue.
"Anyone would have done what we did… I just happened to be there at the time," Ms Pitt said.
Senior Sergeant James Scicluna said, along with the civilian boats, the police rescue helicopter was also deployed.
"The pair were incredibly fortunate that they were wearing life vests and another couple were kayaking in the area and able to provide assistance," he said.
Both boaties were brought to the Port Sorell boat ramp and treated by the ambulance services. Their dinghy was also recovered.
Pair were lucky, but police urge more precaution
While they took all the mandatory safety equipment for their outing, Senior Sergeant Scicluna said the incident "could have ended very differently," and advised boaters to carry an EPIRB which would have allowed for the alarm to be raised much sooner.
Ms Pitt praised the rescued couple for doing "the right things" by wearing life jackets with whistles attached and staying together.
She also said it highlighted the importance of paying attention to your surroundings when out on the water, just in case someone was in trouble nearby.
"I have only gratitude for all members of the public who assisted in the rescue of the pair," Senior Sergeant Scicluna said.
"This includes the kayakers, civilian and maritime vessels who immediately headed to the area and the volunteers from both the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club and the Ulverstone Maritime Rescue."
"It is a very Aussie thing to help out strangers and, in this case, the willingness of people to volunteer their time and resources resulted in a very successful rescue to which we can only say, 'Thank you.'"
