Elevating Health Care

Whether you are a nurse looking for a change, or a health care facility looking to fill an immediate vacancy, we’re here to make the connection so that every community has access to quality health care.

hero-girl-img-1

Connecting qualified travel nurses with the communities that need them the most.

We got our start 25 years ago after noticing a gap in the health care industry - Facilities in remote locations needed qualified health care professionals, but they couldn’t find the right candidates to live in those locations full-time. We are helping to close that gap by recruiting qualified nurses looking for an unconventional work experience on behalf of these facilities.

Your next adventure awaits. Start your career as a travel nurse.

The way we work has changed. People seek more balance and flexibility in where and when they work, and how often. The health care industry is no exception. Travel nursing is a great opportunity to leverage your skills where they’re most needed while giving you the freedom and flexibility to enjoy longer periods of time off between placements to travel, pursue a hobby, or simply work your way through your to-do list. The commute is a little different, but the view is unbeatable and that’s not the only benefit.

Hire a travel nurse

We know that it can take time to find the right people to fill a role and hiring a permanent employee can create an administrative strain. We can take care of all your recruiting needs so that you can focus on what matters - helping people. With a rigorous pre-screen and interview process, you can trust that when you work with us you are getting qualified professionals who have the credentials you require for the roles you are looking to fill.

North Zone Locum

North Zone Nurse Locum Program

A placement through the North Zone Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN) Locum Program is an exciting opportunity to diversify your knowledge and explore northern Alberta.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) have a unique agreement that provides nurses a chance to gain experience in a variety of practice settings including Acute Care, Emergency, Intensive Care, Operating Room, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Continuing Care, Home Care, Public Health and Psychiatry by matching nurses with northern Alberta communities based on their experience, availability, and location preferences.

Nurses have the opportunity to experience unique cases and beautiful locations, while patients benefit from the additional knowledge and expertise of trained nurses coming to their area. It’s a win-win solution that you can feel good about.

How to Apply

Please visit our online job board and search for 'Travel Nurse' to apply or e-mail [email protected] to learn more about the program.

Successful applicants will be notified and then placed upon a roster and contacted when North Zone work opportunities matching the candidate’s skills, experience and work preferences become available.

Search Jobs

Is the RN/RPN Locum Program right for you?

You are eligible to participate this program if you:

  • Are registered, or eligible to be registered, to practice as a RN or RPN in the province of Alberta
  • Have at least one year of applicable nursing experience – two years of experience is preferred
  • Are able to travel and work in the North Zone of AHS

You are not required to make a maximum time commitment in order to participate in the program, but there is a minimum assignment of 3 weeks. While on a locum placement, your shift hours and shift rotation cycle will follow the existing collective agreement. While the length of assignment can vary depending upon site need, the average length is approximately six weeks.

Aside from the benefit of working within a broad inter-professional team, RNs and RPNs are able to work to their full scope of practice, treating patients throughout the continuum of care. Being part of the locum program also offers various financial incentives, including:

  • Compensation of $38.44 to $50.45 per hour
  • Temporary premium payment of $25.00 per hour on top of regular wage
  • Temporary daily payment of $50.00 for each day on assignment (excluding Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray)
  • A per diem allowance of $25.40 for each day on assignment
  • Reimbursement for travel costs
  • Accommodation provided by the program at no cost

Covering a vast expanse of the province, Alberta’s north offers exceptional lifestyle opportunities. The extra-long summer days deliver ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors: hiking, biking, and riding horseback or ATVs along thousands of kilometres of trails, or enjoy fishing, swimming, or paddling along northern waterways. Winter sports are also hugely popular and locals enjoy skiing, skating, ice-fishing or snowmobiling through the varied terrain. From prairie grasslands to dense boreal forest, you’ll find yourself immersed in communities with unique cultures that are all their own.

“I have always worked in big hospitals and was very specialized. When I came as a locum it’s a totally different way of nursing. You really get to know your patients, the community and different cultures from around the world.”

Barb, completed various locums

“I just really fell in love with the area. It’s nice to have that diversified experience you get working in the North. That’s what appealed to me. You get a little bit of everything from trauma, cardiac, pediatrics, obstetrics, health teaching and a lot of mentoring.”

Audrey, former locum nurse

Our work takes place on historical and contemporary Indigenous lands, including the territories of Treaty 6, Treaty 7 & Treaty 8 and the homeland of the Métis Nation of Alberta and 8 Métis Settlements. TRAVEL NURSING

Isn’t it time to spread your wings, travel Canada and never miss a paycheck?

Work to live , Talk about work/life balance!

Nursing is your career. You went to school and studied hard, graduated, got your first job and now you’ve been working in the field of nursing for a lot of years. You love the job and you’re passionate about it, but at this point in your life you want  more ‘You time.’ You’d like to have more time with your family and friends, you’d like to travel and you’re even starting to think about retiring; not yet, but you’re thinking about it. What if you could stay in the profession you trained for and you love and have the lifestyle you want at the same time? There is such a thing as work/life balance; you can have it all with Solutions Staffing.

Nursing school helped you prepare for what a career in the industry was going to be like, but the real training has been the years of experience you’ve devoted to the field. Your education along with what you have learned on the job has made you an invaluable asset to the profession. Throughout everything you’ve learned, one of the most important things is that to be at your absolute best, it is essential to have a real balance between your work life and your personal life. When you first started in nursing it was important to prove yourself as a dedicated and passionate hard worker; you’ve done that. Now it would be nice to let the profession work for you. What if we told you there’s a different kind of nursing experience? Solutions Staffing is just an email away.

Work When You Have Time To Work. Decide for yourself.

Nursing is a tremendous career and you love it, but sometimes the scheduling doesn’t account for your aging parents, your kids or grandkids or the fact that you’d like to take an extended vacation. You give a lot of yourself to your career, but it would be nice to be able to decide when you want to work and what’s best for you and your family. With Solutions Staffing, that’s exactly what happens: you decide for yourself when and where you work. Seem to good to be true? Solutions Staffing is a real opportunity for you. Our reputation speaks for itself and while you get on with the business of what you do best, we take care of the rest. Of course you have a lot of questions, that’s normal. We will answer all of them so you can make the decisions that are right for you.

row of colorful houses

It’s Flexible Freedom. Never Miss A Paycheque.

Remember when you were first learning how to use your Smart Phone? Your TV remote? The PVR? You knew that you wanted to do it, but it seemed daunting and scary so you put it off. It didn’t take you long to realize that if you wanted these things as a part of your lifestyle you were going to have to pursue them. And so you did and you mastered it. The reason you put in the time and effort to learn about it is because you knew that it would make your life easier, more convenient and ultimately better. That’s what it’s like with Travel Nursing. At first, you might not think that it’s that important to you, but as you think about it, you start to realize that this really could improve your life. Not only will you get the hang of it in no time, but just like with technology, you’ll wonder how you did without it. It’s your job, your way with Solutions Staffing. We hire healthcare professionals including Nurse practitioners, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Allied Healthcare Professionals for casual shifts, permanent positions and everything in between.

Let’s talk.

The demand for travel nursing in Canada has been steadily climbing over the last few years, resulting in an ever-growing number of healthcare agencies seeking qualified personnel to fill roles on a temporary basis. Travel and contract nurses are now being sought after across multiple sectors, including long-term care facilities, hospitals etc.

The nursing industry is facing a shortage of nurses caused by a number of factors.

Travel nurses can be a more cost-effective option than hiring full-time nurses, since they typically only work for a few months at a time.

The increasing popularity of medical tourism has contributed to the demand for travel nurses.

Hospitals are connecting to travel nursing agencies in Canada for hiring nurses to take care of patients.

Through the range of work experiences, she discovered a passion for patient safety and set out to become a leader in the field.

It all led Ong to the Cumming School of Medicine’s (CSM)  Precision Health Program .

“There are a wide variety of career paths in health care,” says Ong, now a senior patient safety specialist with Alberta Health Services (AHS). “But I fell in love with patient safety and quality improvement and since then continued to pursue that path.”

Seeking to learn more about leadership in patient safety and how she could be a catalyst for change, Ong was delighted to come across the Precision Health Program (PHP) which offered a specialization in  Quality and Safety Leadership . A laddered master’s degree designed for working professionals from many backgrounds, the PHP is unique in Canada as the only graduate degree of its kind focused on precision health.

Ong joined the inaugural cohort when the program launched in the fall of 2021. This year she will earn a master’s degree in precision health that aligns with her career ambitions.

Elevating the voices of patients and families

As part of her master's PHP project, Ong leads a patient safety initiative being developed at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Called Partnering with Families to Improve Pediatric Patient Safety, her project aims to unite and elevate the voices of patients, families and health-care providers in pediatric hospital settings. It supports the  Safest Together program, a patient safety initiative based at ACH and Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital. Ong’s supervisor and academic project lead, Dr. Jennifer Thull-Freedman, MD, MSc, a clinical associate professor with the CSM’s Department of Pediatrics, wanted to improve the experience of safety for families of children admitted to hospital and increase engagement in patient safety initiatives. “We were seeing many positive outcomes from our work in safety,” Thull-Freedman says. “But we had a sense that our program wasn’t reaching families and improving their experience as much as it could.” In interviews with parents of patients admitted to hospital, families shared that staff behaviours and attitudes, collaboration and prioritization of family experience was what mattered most in making them feel safe. Ong’s role was to better understand how to improve the family experience based on that feedback and to facilitate co-design workshops and strategies that incorporated the voices of everyone involved.

A woman stands in front of a bulletin board

Through consultation and interviews the team discovered that families were not always aware of the safety actions being implemented in the hospital or ways they could contribute. The team was able to determine that psychological safety was the foundation of feeling safe for families and among health-care providers, and that families valued being able to communicate openly without fear of judgment.

“Blending the family and patient voice with the health-care professional experience and knowledge has provided unique perspectives that help us create and fuel innovative change in the hospital environment,” Ong says. Findings will help improve the experience of safety for everyone involved and may lead to broader system change down the road, she adds. Laurel Pridgen became involved with Ong’s project as a family advisor soon after two of her children were diagnosed with a rare genetic disease. She uses her lived experience as a parent of children with medical complexity to provide feedback on the program.

“Through my involvement with this project as a family member with lived experience, I have seen an excellent example of health-care professionals collaborating with families to improve outcomes for children and families,” she says. Pridgen says the project team has been willing to advocate on her behalf and enabled her to share her story with many health-care leaders and front-line staff in order to improve personalized care.  “I think many individuals have learned about co-design and the importance of it through Coty’s project and passion for this work.”

Quality and safety leadership

Students in the PHP’s Quality and Safety Leadership specialization are trained in health system and project management with a focus on innovation. They also learn how to measure and improve patient outcomes, experience and value within the health system. Ong says her studies have provided that specialized training, helped her develop flexibility and emotional intelligence, and strengthened her skills as a health-care leader in her field.

She is grateful to have found graduate-level studies that align with her career interests, and to have connected with other “change agents” through the program. “Coalitions with like-minded people are really important,” she says. “And this program was a catalyst for creating that.”

The Cumming School of Medicine’s  Precision Health Program  is delivered online, making it accessible to professionals living anywhere the world. Students can choose from four specializations designed to enhance their potential as health-care leaders in the areas of precision medicine, quality and safety leadership, health professions education leadership, and innovation and entrepreneurship. For more information visit  ucalgary.ca/precision-health . Applications for the Precision Health Program will be accepted until May 31, 2024.

The tour guide is not professional enough and did not care our needs. The tour is behind schedule and we cannot approach our tour guide during the trip. Young woman searches for live kidney donor sharing her extremely rare blood type

Best match for calgary's sana ashoori, 20, is likely in the south asian community.

travel nursing calgary

Social Sharing

Sana Ashoori is in a race against time — and the odds — as she searches for a life-saving kidney donation.

A rare disease has left the young Calgarian with just 30 per cent kidney function and she will ultimately need a transplant.

"I think mainly for my future," said Ashoori, 20, who struggles with fatigue, anemia and a number of other health issues related to her illness.

Ashoori and her family were advised to start searching for a donor early — before she is added to the transplant list — because she also has an extremely rare blood type, known as the "Bombay" blood type.

While she could take a kidney from someone with another type, doctors say a kidney from someone with the same blood group reduces the risk her body will reject the organ.

"What if I don't find a donor? Or what if I do find one and then it's not really a compatible match with my blood type? And then rejection happens? That whole process is very scary to think about."

Bombay blood type

People with the Bombay blood type lack an H antigen, a basic protein that is the backbone of other blood groups, according to Dr. Dave Sidhu, head of transfusion and transplant medicine in southern Alberta.

The introduction of another blood type in these cases   can prompt the formation of antibodies, which can ultimately lead to organ rejection.

Some people already have these antibodies circulating in their blood, further increasing the likelihood of rejection.

The trouble is, the Bombay blood type is extremely rare in Canada.

"The best option for finding a compatible match is looking within her own ethnic population first," said Sidhu.

That's because this blood group is more common in South Asian populations.

According to Sidhu, approximately one in a million people of European descent have the Bombay blood type compared to about one in 10,000 people from India, for example.

No one in Ashoori's family, originally from Afghanistan, has been identified as a match.

And despite their efforts reaching out to other South Asian communities across the country, and even internationally, they have yet to find a suitable donor.

A man with a beard and glasses is smiling.

More awareness needed

Ashoori's story shines a light on the need to have as many people from as many different backgrounds as possible in the Canadian donor pool, doctors say.

"The best matches are often coming from people who have immigrated from similar parts of the world. So the more diverse donors we can have, the better the chance — particularly for people coming from some of these small ethnic minorities — for finding a very suitable or better match for them long-term," said Sidhu.

According to Sidhu, while the transplant could be done with a kidney from a live or deceased donor , a live donor will give Ashoori the best chances for success.

Her mother, Shaima Rahimi, said the family is working to raise awareness about live kidney donation within South Asian communities as they scour the country for a donor who can help.

It's been an uphill battle, she said, because she's encountered a number of people who don't understand the concept of live kidney donation.

"We have been trying to reach out to people to come forward. Also, we are trying to educate people to know that they can live on one kidney. It is possible to live on one kidney, and the other kidney can save a life," she said.

There can be a number of challenges, according to Sidhu, including language barriers, misconceptions about risk, cultural differences and a lack of access to information.

"That's why it's always more successful when we have community members try to create community awareness."

Information on becoming a living donor:

  • Canada's Kidney Paired Donation (run by Canadian Blood Services)
  • Southern Alberta Transplant Program - Calgary
  • Living Donor Services - Edmonton

"It's well known that living donors can donate a kidney very safely and … live a long and healthy life with their one remaining kidney," said Joyce Van Deurzen, executive director of the southern Alberta branch of Kidney Foundation of Canada. She noted extensive testing is done ahead of time.

In Alberta, while the direct costs of donating a kidney are covered, the  Living Donor Expense Reimbursement Program  can help cover some out-of-pocket expenses for living donors — including some travel expenses — even if they're from other provinces or other countries, she said.

Meanwhile, Ashoori's family continues to search.

"It's hard," said Rahimi, holding back tears.

"As a mother, I'm asking, as a human, come forward, save a life. Start with the testing so it can change my daughter's life."

Ashoori, who has put her dream of becoming a nurse on hold due to her failing health, is hopeful the right person will come forward.

"I think it would be a really good blessing because kidneys are a vital organ. Without them, I cannot live," said Ashoori.

"I'd get to be less stressed about my future. And hopefully, in the future, I can also help educate other people and provide more donors to other people who are in need."
