Walking across Europe - Zaiga and Martins

This article may contain compensated links. Learn more in our disclaimer .

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]alking across Europe? Yes! That is what Zaiga and Martins are currently up to. These two Latvian adventurers now are on a 6500 kilometers long walk from Poland to Portugal. They want to walk  Camino de Santiago from home (first part – from Riga to Poland – they did before). What else is important – Zaiga and Martins are not taking the shortest path, they walk mostly by the coast.

Why they are doing this? How it is going? And how they prepared for walking across Europe? All of this and much more you will find in our interview with them! Just continue reading!

Table of Contents

  – Please, Tell Us a Little Bit About Yourselves!

I’m just an ordinary girl who too frequently started to ask questions to myself like: “Am I living the life I admire? Am I everything I want to be?” I used to work in a media agency as a Head of Digital department.

But that doesn’t define me or say anything about me, right? It doesn’t matter what is my job position or how old I am, it’s about who I really am and how I feel life. Right now for me it is all about experience. Experience is the one that counts and it has a real value in my eyes.

Before my lovely work experience, I also lived and studied in Italy for 2 years. That was a place where I got in love with engagement and a taste of experience that made me fearful yet fascinated, and gave me a sense of being overwhelmed and inspired.

Martins is a rational dreamer and his curiosity may be the key for him towards happier, more meaningful and fulfilled life. I have a feeling that wood is actually his natural environment where he feels best.

 – For How Long Did You Already Have This Idea About Walking Across Europe?

The idea of walking the St.James road starting from our home doors is a very old dream for us.

Zaiga by the sea - walking across Europe

 – When Did You Understand, That Hiking Is Your Way of Traveling?

It all started in a very cold winter day when Martins said: “Let’ s go for a hike near the seaside”. I had never done it before. He gave me his winter boats, some trousers that was 3 times larger than I needed and a sweater, so that I feel comfortable while being outside. We poured hot tea into the thermos and walked 24 km.

To understand the seriousness, I was a girl who didn’t appreciate time spent near the nature. Martins changed that perception, and I’m truly thankful him for that, I discovered an absolutely new world and new challenges. Martins then already had an experience by walking alone all the Latvian seaside boarder. He accomplished 500 km in 12 days.

 – What is the Longest Hike You Have Done?

We are doing it right now, the walk of St. James from Poland to Portugal. It is our second month (middle of April 2015) and we plan to finish the journey at a Christmas time. Right now we have walked some 800 km out of 6500 km .

In previous years on our 2 weeks vacation time, we walked all the seaside boarder of Latvia , Estonia and Lithuania. Last year we finished the journey in a small village in Poland called Ustka, so this time we started from the same point we reached last year.

Zaiga walking - walking across Europe

 – What Are You Taking With You? Does It differs From What You Take For Shorter Trips?

Yes, it’s different. The bags are heavier than usually. We have to take extra things for the occasion “what if”. More possible situations, more challenges to face. Our budget is limited, so as much you plan and take into account before, the better it is. At the same time it is impossible and unnecessary to plan or pretend all the situations before, because then you will never go out of the home.

I also have to take with me different state of mind. In somehow I see this trip as a challenge, I will not deny it. I feel the joy of life and passion only when I come across challenges, especially the ones related with movement. At the same time I’m a calm person. So I’m used to feel the art of stillness. And that’ s exactly what I experience during this long trip, these 2 words living together every day.

 – How Much Do You Plan Ahead?

We plan as much as our closest people and our budget want to know. We like to plan till the backpacks are on our backs. Long distance hiking is not the activity you can plan in every detail. Too many unplanned things and situations can happen.

In my case preparation and planning is more about your state of mind and not the road itself. Actually, the less expectations you have before the trip, the more open you are towards your road and all the things it has prepared for you. At the same time the more focused and ambitious you are, the more you can do. Without ambitious you will not do it, because that’s not easy.

Martins camping - walking across Europe

 – What Has Been the Hardest Part in the Process of Preparation?

We feel very comfortable in the planning process. We have made a lot of hiking tours in Latvia in different kind of weather and conditions. The preparation was not a challenge for as, the trip itself is.

Preparation is just a turning point, when you understand that this is really happening, nothing more. In one interview before the trip we said: “We are going out of our comfort zone”. But now, after being out for more than a month I would say that I’m in my comfort zone right now. And we love to feel challenge, we love when it’s hard, because in this case we really feel we are alive. I also feel that I become better person while being near the nature and it is not about who I am any more, its about what I become.

 – What Has Been the Biggest Challenge While Walking?

The biggest lesson I’m taking right now – failure is a crucial part of success, of movement. On the second week of our trip, we got really sick in Poland, we couldn’t move further for a week. After my 400 km, I got a plantar fasciitis, which means that I can’t walk right now and I have no idea for how long.

I bought a bike, and I’m moving further right now with it, but it haven’ t changed my joy of movement. I discover a new way of seeing the world. Still, hope that till France my leg will get better and I will walk again.

So finding a way, carry on even if you think that there is no option. Must admit, Martins is still walking. He is managing approximately 30 km every day and soon we will reach 1000 km. He’ s my inspiration.

Marina Abramovic on one interview said a very inspirational phrase that for now is my mantra: “If you don’t fail, it means you’re not risking anything, or you’re repeating yourself. And that means you’ll lose the curiosity and the life force inside of you.” So fail. Fail over and over again, but don’t be afraid. Be bold, experience is the one that counts. Our time is limited, so don’t waste it. Do whatever you feel like is the right thing for you. Feel your life. A life of grace.

Zika Travel Recommendations by Traveler Type and Country Category

Know before you go! Zika continues to be a problem in many parts of the world. There is no vaccine to prevent infection. Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected  Aedes  species mosquito ( Ae. aegypti  and  Ae. albopictus ). Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects.

Your decision to delay or cancel travel is personal and complex. In making this decision, consider your travel destination and your ability to protect yourself from mosquito bites. CDC recommends that pregnant women and couples planning a pregnancy within the next 3 months consult with a health care provider in making this decision.

Recommendations for US Residents Traveling Abroad

1 These countries have a potential risk of Zika, but we do not have accurate information on the current level of risk. As a result, detection and reporting of new outbreaks may be delayed.

2 Because  Aedes aegypti  mosquitoes (the mosquitoes that most commonly spreads Zika) are present in these countries, Zika has the potential to be present, along with other mosquito-borne infections. Detection and reporting of cases and outbreaks may be delayed.

3 No  Aedes aegypti  mosquitoes (the mosquitoes that most commonly spreads Zika) have been reported in these countries. However, other  Aedes  species mosquitoes have been known to spread Zika, and these may be present.

History of Moscow Oblast

The territory of the Moscow region was inhabited more than 20 thousand years ago. In the first millennium AD, this land was inhabited mostly by the Finno-Ugric peoples (Meryane and Meshchera). In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began active development of the region. The population was engaged in hunting, fisheries, agriculture, and cattle breeding.

In the middle of the 12th century, the territory of the present Moscow region became part of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the first towns were founded (Volokolamsk in 1135, Moscow in 1147, Zvenigorod in 1152, Dmitrov in 1154). In the first half of the 13th century, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was conquered by the Mongols.

In the 14th-16th centuries, Moscow principality became the center of unification of Russian lands. The history of the Moscow region is inextricably linked to military events of the Time of Troubles - the siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery by the troops of False Dmitry II, the first and second militias.

More historical facts…

In 1708, by decree of Peter the Great, Moskovskaya gubernia (province) was established. It included most of the territory of present Moscow oblast. In 1712, St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian Empire and the significance of the Moscow region as the country’s economic center began to decrease.

In 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place near Moscow. It was the biggest battle of the Russian-French War of 1812. In the second half of the 19th century, especially after the peasant reform of 1861, the Moscow province experienced economic growth. In 1851, the first railway connected Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1862 - Nizhny Novgorod.

The population of the Moscow region increased significantly (in 1847 - 1.13 million people, in 1905 - 2.65 million). On the eve of the First World War, Moscow was a city with a population of more than one million people.

In November, 1917, the Soviet power was established in the region. In 1918, the country’s capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow that contributed to economic recovery of the province. In the 1920s-1930s, a lot of churches located near Moscow were closed, a large number of cultural monuments were destroyed. On January 14, 1929, Moscow Oblast was formed.

In 1941-1942, one of the most important battles of the Second World War took place on the territory of the region - the Battle for Moscow. In the postwar years, the growth of economic potential of the region continued; several science cities were founded (Dubna, Troitsk, Pushchino, Chernogolovka).

In the 1990s, the economy of Moscow Oblast experienced a deep crisis. Since the 1990s, due to the motorization of the population and commuting, road traffic situation in the Moscow region significantly deteriorated. Traffic jams have become commonplace.

Moscow Oblast - Features

Moscow Oblast is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the basin of the rivers of Volga, Oka, Klyazma, Moskva. The region stretches from north to south for 310 km, from west to east - 340 km. It was named after the city of Moscow, which however is not part of the region. Part of the administrative authorities of the region is located in Krasnogorsk.

On the territory of the Moscow region, there are 77 cities and towns, 19 of them have a population of more than 100 thousand people. The largest cities are Balashikha (518,300), Podolsk (309,600), Mytishchi (262,700), Khimky (256,300), Korolyov (225,300), Lubertsy (209,600), Krasnogorsk (174,900), Elektrostal (149,000), Odintsovo (138,900), Kolomna (136,800), Domodedovo (136,100).

The climate is temperate continental. Summers are warm, winters are moderately cold. The average temperature in January is minus 10 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.

One of the most important features of the local economy is its proximity to Moscow. Some of the cities (Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Mytishchi) have become in fact the “sleeping districts” of Moscow. The region is in second place in terms of industrial production among the regions of Russia (after Moscow).

The leading industries are food processing, engineering, chemical, metallurgy, construction. Moscow oblast has one of the largest in Russia scientific and technological complexes. Handicrafts are well developed (Gzhel ceramics, Zhostov trays, Fedoskino lacquered miniatures, toy-making).

Moscow railway hub is the largest in Russia (11 radial directions, 2,700 km of railways, the density of railways is the highest in Russia). There are two large international airports - Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. Vnukovo airport is used for the flights within the country.

Attractions of Moscow Oblast

Moscow Oblast has more than 6,400 objects of cultural heritage:

  • famous estate complexes,
  • ancient towns with architectural monuments (Vereya, Volokolamsk, Dmitrov, Zaraysk, Zvenigorod, Istra, Kolomna, Sergiev Posad, Serpukhov),
  • churches and monasteries-museums (the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Joseph-Volokolamsk monastery, Pokrovsky Khotkov monastery, Savvino Storozhevsky monastery, Nikolo Ugresha monastery).

The most famous estate complexes:

  • Arkhangelskoye - a large museum with a rich collection of Western European and Russian art of the 17th-19th centuries,
  • Abramtsevo - a literary and artistic center,
  • Melikhovo - an estate owned by A.P. Chekhov at the end of the 19th century,
  • Zakharovo and Bolshiye Vyazyomy included in the History and Literature Museum-Reserve of Alexander Pushkin,
  • House-Museum of the composer P.I. Tchaikovsky in Klin,
  • Muranovo that belonged to the poet F.I. Tyutchev,
  • Shakhmatovo - the estate of the poet Alexander Blok.

The architectural ensemble of the Trinity Sergius Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The largest museum of the Moscow region is located in Serpukhov - Serpukhov Historical and Art Museum.

The places of traditional arts and crafts are the basis of the souvenir industry of Russia:

  • Fedoskino - lacquer miniature painting,
  • Bogorodskoe - traditional manufacture of wooden toys,
  • Gzhel - unique tradition of creating ceramics,
  • Zhostovo - painted metal crafts,
  • Pavlovsky Posad - fabrics with traditional printed pattern.

Some of these settlements have museums dedicated to traditional crafts (for example, a toy museum in Bogorodskoe), as well as centers of learning arts and crafts.

Why Choose Us

Unique destinations.

We don't run tours just for the sake of it. We run tours to places that you either can't get to by yourself or are dangerous or very difficult to go to alone. And even within our specific countries, we don't just stick to the main tourist routes and are constantly endeavouring to gain access to new and exciting places or special events.

Our countries of expertise are:

Amazing Guides

We take guiding very seriously. But also not too seriously! It's not a matter of simply memorising a bunch of facts, or just knowing the itinerary. We treat guiding as a 24/7 job that involves everything from making sure everyone gets the breakfast they ordered, to showing our guests all the most interesting spots in each place, to being a social lubricant for any situation no matter how tame or how lively.

Our guides aren't just guides. They also are at the very least involved in, but often completely responsible for organising the tours they are on. So the person that answers your inquiry also organises visas, goes to meetings with officials, books hotels and guides tours.

Most importantly, you won't just be impressed with our guides' knowledge and passion, you'll also want them as friends.

Great Groups - Travel for Everyone

There are people out there, maybe you're one of them, who thinks that travelling with a group might be limiting, or could just be annoying. Maybe you've been on a group tour before and it was a bit of a pain, or maybe you just love travelling independently. Well, you're not alone! One of the great things about the types of people that come on our tours to these sorts of destinations is that we all have at least this one thing in common. We're all independent, discerning travellers, and as it turns out, travelling with each other can actually be really fun. As well as being enjoyable, we find that you can often get more out of it too.

  • We've taken guests from ages 2 up to 75.
  • We've had guests from over 60 countries.
  • We've had the privilege of guiding pilots, train drivers, nurses, doctors, teachers, fellow tour guides, retirees, students, film directors, musicans and everyone between.

We are open to anyone. There are no age limits or particular types of travellers who are more or less welcome. From a retiree who's found travel later in life, to a travel blogger aiming to visit every country, to a family just wanting to show their kids a less common type of holiday, our tours work for anyone.
