About the cranberries.
The Cranberries are an Irish rock band who formed in Limerick in 1989. The band consists of lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Although widely associated with alternative rock, the band's sound also incorporates indie pop, post-punk, Irish folk, and pop rock elements. The Cranberries rose to international fame in the 1990s with their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, which became a commercial success. The Cranberries are one of the most successful rock acts of the '90s and have sold over 40 million records worldwide. The band has achieved four top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?; No Need to Argue, To the Faithful Departed and Bury the Hatchet) and eight top 20 singles on the Modern Rock Tracks chart ("Linger", "Dreams", "Zombie", "Ode to My Family", "Ridiculous Thoughts", "Salvation", "Free to Decide", and "Promises"). In early 2009, after a six-year hiatus, the Cranberries reunited and began a North American tour, followed by shows in Latin America and Europe. The band recorded their sixth album Roses in May 2011, and released it on 27 February 2012. Something Else, an album covering earlier songs together with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, was released on 28 April 2017.

New Jersey Cranberries: A Tour of the Garden State Fruit
- By: Amber Egorov
- Updated on September 5, 2023
When someone mentions the Pine Barrens, a few things come to mind: The Jersey Devil, “Piney Power,” and over a million acres of trees! That’s all I knew before getting a private tour by the most knowledgeable and kind woman at Whitesbog Village , a working farm and living history museum of the region’s blueberry and cranberry crops .
The drive into Browns Mills was lined with trees, a dense forest that seemed never to end. Then, suddenly, I started to see water. Not necessarily large lakes or rivers, but squared plots of water. We were here Cranberry Country ! We could see the bogs left and right as we left onto the winding dirt road. Finally, we arrived at the parking lot of Whitesbog Village . The historic General Store was decked out in haystacks and pumpkins with a tall water tower in the background. We saw crafts, bumper stickers, and jars of cranberry jam as we entered. A feeling of autumn warmth surrounded us and made us feel welcome.
Unfortunately, the attendant at the register said they weren’t offering tours that day. My disappointment was apparent after the hour-and-a-half drive, so she motioned to a coworker to come over. The pleasant woman with white-rimmed glasses said she would be delighted to give us a private tour! She then unlocked all the buildings and started her speech, beginning with the land’s pre-historic roots with glaciers, mammoths, natives, and aquifers. It was all quite interesting, but I won’t spoil it here.
Whitesbog offers free tours on the first Saturday of each month!
VIEW WEBSITE
In the gallery, you’ll find walls of sepia photographs of the White family that founded the farm and immigrant workers that tended the cranberry fields. You’ll see the early 1900s cameras that took them. Turn a corner, and you’ll find century-old tools used to cultivate the cranberries. In the east wing, you’ll appreciate local artists’ paintings depicting the Pine Barrens’ cranberry culture.
After touring the buildings of Whitesbog Village, the guide led us to a path where we learned about the agricultural aspect of cranberry farming. It’s almost like cranberries and the Pines were meant to be, as flora and fauna of the region work together in a symbiotic relationship. To make this sense, we first know that an infectious fungus once plagued the White’s cranberry crops.
They hired scientists to formulate poisons to destroy it. Still, the scientists found that the moss that grows naturally in the forests acts as a natural Ph balancer, turning groundwater into a protectant from an infectious fungus that once destroyed dry cranberry crops. Another critical factor is the mushroom that grows in the area; its root system helps the moss grow. All these elements work together to form acidic water in the aquifer below that farmers feed into the bogs. That’s when the vitality of the cranberry became dependent upon water.
Cranberries grow on dry land. When the cranberries are ripe, farmers control water flow into fields with trenches and pump houses for the wet harvest. Once the areas are flooded, machinery moves in, shaking the cranberries off the vine and corraling them into a vacuum. Wet-harvested cranberries are used for juices and sauce, while the cranberries you buy in a bag at the store are dry-harvested.
Cranberries are an autumn staple, and New Jersey is the 3rd largest producer! They have health benefits that other foods can’t offer and are a unique part of Garden State’s agriculture. This ruby red berry is a gem we can be proud of!
All this talk about cranberries is making me hungry! Check out some recipes using Jersey Fresh cranberries:

Want to make a cranberry trek of your own? You can visit Whitesbog Village year-round, head over to Chatsworth Cranberry Festival this weekend, or sign up for next year’s Farm to Fork Fondo , a bicycle ride around the Pine Barrens to visit cranberry farms (with a winery stop) and taste chef-prepared Jersey Fresh bites along the way!

Massachusetts Cranberries Offers Harvest Season Guided Bus Tours
New manager expands 2022 season program headquartered at Carver barn
McGRATHPR.com – Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association (CCCGA/Massachusetts Cranberries), representing more than 275 cranberry growers in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Nantucket, has expanded its annual “Cranberry Harvest Bus Tour” program, providing online scheduling of bus tours that depart from a Carver barn, organized throughout the harvest season. Details, schedule, and registration are available at cranberries.org/cranberry-bog-bus-tours .
“This is a thrilling time for us, the harvest season culminates our cranberry year,” shares CCCGA’s new Cranberry Tour and Event Manager Kim Miot. “Our staff has worked hard over the last few years to originate a sustainable tour program that supports the annual peaked interest during harvest. It is a great pleasure to embrace their work, expand the mission and raise awareness about our Commonwealth’s official state fruit.” On staff for six months, Miot brings a wealth of knowledge to her role, from a career steeped in event and program management. Her prior roles developing two community stations, led her to produce a community news program, live telethons, and serve as the voice for community story origination. Her first goals at CCCGA have included raising visibility for Massachusetts Cranberries, rooted in expanding the Association’s tour program and establishing this season’s tour headquarters in Carver.
“The Association is so grateful to multi-generational cranberry grower and member Dick Ward, who has granted us use of his quintessential New England working barn this entire season, where our tour attendees, buses, and guides gather and depart,” shares Brian Wick, CCCGA’s executive director. “Growers are legendary in their generosity and commitment to the mission of our organization and the industry. We would be remiss if we didn’t communicate our gratitude for their stalwart support.” Though Ward’s Carver barn is a temporary launchpad for tours, the Association’s Board has long aspired to acquire a permanent property that would house its tour program headquarters and a heritage center, still in its vision for the future.
“Cranberry Harvest Bus Tours” span the 2022 Massachusetts “Crimson Harvest” season, underway through early November, on select dates, departing at 10 am or 2 pm, by advance ticket purchase. Guided bus tours vary in length from 90 minutes to two hours, depending on the distance to that day’s harvesting bog. Attendees are requested to dress comfortably and arrive 15 minutes in advance of departure for registration fulfillment. The experience is led by an industry expert tour guide host, who travels on along with attendees speaking about Massachusetts’ rich cranberry industry history, encouraging interaction with cranberry growers at their bogs, and guides the group through viewing a live wet cranberry harvest.
Tickets to “Cranberry Harvest Bus Tours” are $18 general admission, children under age 5 attend for free, by advance purchase. To purchase tickets, and for complete location and tour details visit Massachusetts Cranberries website at cranberries.org/cranberry-bog-bus-tours .
Ward’s barn, serving as this year’s tour headquarters, welcomes the public during tour bookings, with cranberry educational displays, industry-sourced products for purchase including fresh Massachusetts cranberries, branded t-shirts, and hats, as well as the occasional multi-generational grower on site answering questions and providing commentary.
Each season CCCGA staff navigates a wealth of interest in the picturesque harvest, with Massachusetts serving as the founder of the cranberry cultivation, the Commonwealth’s number one agricultural food crop, and the second largest cranberry growing region in the country, yielding approximately 23% of the annual national crop.
Massachusetts Cranberries, established as Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association in 1888, represents more than 275 cranberry growers in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Nantucket. Cranberries are the largest agricultural food commodity produced in Massachusetts, with an annual crop value of $64.9 million. Massachusetts is home to 30% of all North American cranberry acreage and according to the Farm Credit East Knowledge Exchange Report, provides over 6,900 jobs and a total economic benefit of over $1.4 billion to the Massachusetts economy.
For more information about Massachusetts cranberries and their health benefits, visit Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association online at cranberries.org or follow the Association on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
