MANILA CONCERT SCENE

Daniel Caesar will make third visit to Manila this July 2023

Following the successes of his past two Manila shows: his Wanderland Music & Arts Festival debut in 2018 and his first Philippine headline show in 2019, Canadian R&B artist Daniel Caesar, makes an exciting return to the country.

Since kickstarting his career in 2014 and releasing his debut album in 2017, the singer has been an unstoppable force in the modern R&B scene. Songs like ‘Best Part’, ‘Get You’, and ‘Japanese Denim’ have been a staple in thousands of playlists for long drives, hard nights, and heartaches.

Everything he has created so far has a magic touch—it’s no wonder his music has always garnered widespread critical acclaim.

This certainly still holds true with the latest addition to his discography, NEVER ENOUGH. The third studio album puts an end to the four-year break with Caesar heavily involving himself in the production of almost every track. “This feels like the most personal [release] yet,” he shares.

And everyone listened.

Once it was dropped, it almost felt like the whole world stopped to put it on. ‘Always’ was an early favorite making its rounds all over TikTok. ‘Let Me Go’ was an instant share in group chats and personal stories.

It’s clear that Daniel Caesar has done it again—creating magic on love songs and heartbreak ballads that have a place on everyone’s playlists.

Suddenly, it seemed like four years wasn’t too long of a wait—“If every time you make something, you put your all into it, and people like it, there’ll be someone there to listen when you come back around.”

We’re already counting down the days until we have that one moment of time to be under Caesar’s spell of soul-baring sing-alongs once again.

Trust us, it’s a magical experience.

‘You’re the best part:’ Daniel Caesar returns to Manila for his ‘Superpowers World Tour’

There is no such thing as “Filipino time” for many fans who lined up literally hours before the much-awaited “Superpowers” World Tour of Daniel Caesar at the World Trade Center in Pasay City last July 19. While this is already the Canadian R&B singer’s third time back in the country, first during “Wanderland” 2018 and his solo concert in 2019, the support and excitement from fans had only gotten better, so much so that fans did not mind the moody weather.

daniel caesar tour manila

Official “Superpowers” World Tour merchandise was made available for fans, and there were notable personalities such as Moira Dela Torre, Kyle Echarri, PBA player Shaun Ildefonso and YouTuber Bella Racelis who were spotted at the concert.

Opening act Filipino rising R&B singer-songwriter Jason Dhakal was one to watch. He serenaded the audience with his laid-back tracks telling stories of love and life. He sang one of his hit songs entitled “manila,” which already had the audience singing their hearts out. Aside from sharing an unreleased song, the 23-year-old artist also revealed that he will be launching an album soon.

daniel caesar tour manila

Finally, with a camcorder in his hand, Daniel Caesar starts the show with his song, “Ocho Rios.” From one song to another, Filipino fans loudly sang every lyric. The audience just got louder and louder especially after the singer joked, “You guys are shockingly quiet tonight.” But even so, he says that it is really good to be back and tells that the Filipino audience is the best. He shares that there is so much for him to say, but may be best for him to just sing it all.

He sang one of his latest songs, “Always,” which is part of his 2023 album, “Never Enough.”

daniel caesar tour manila

Then, of course, he sang one of his well-known songs, “Best Part.” Although Filipino-blooded singer H.E.R., was not around to sing it with him, it was not a problem for the audience, who sang it with him, somewhat stealing the show during that point. There was also a couple who got engaged during the song.

“Isa pa!” and “One more song!” chants echoed in the World Trade Center after Daniel Caesar bid his goodbye. Thankfully, it was loud enough for the singer to hear! He went back to sing a few more songs starting with, “Japanese Denim.”

Daniel Caesar officially ended the show with the highly requested, “Get You,” as  confetti showered the audience.

There will always be space for Daniel Caesar right where he left it.

The Daniel Ceasar Superpowers World Tour Live In Manila was made possible by Karpos Multimedia.

PLAYLIST: Daniel Caesar Brings His 'Superpowers' to Manila!

One music ph team july 17, 2023 05:40 pm.

https://asset-ent.abs-cbn.com/ent/entertainment/media/onemusic/daniel-caesar-poster.jpg

Following the phenomenal successes of his past two Philippine shows: his Manila debut as part of Wanderland Music & Arts Festival and his first Manila solo headline show in 2019, Canadian soul-R&B-jazz fusion artist Daniel Caesar makes an exciting return to the country.

Since jumpstarting his music career back in 2014 and dropping his album Freudian six years ago, the singer has been a formidable fixture in the contemporary R&B scene. Songs like "Best Part"  featuring H.E.R. , "Get You" , and " Japanese Denim"  have been a staple in thousands of playlists for long drives, hard nights, and heartaches.

Everything he has sonically crafted has a natural flair to them—no surprise his art has always amassed widespread rave reviews. This definitely still holds accurate with the newest entry to his impressive discography, NEVER ENOUGH . His third full-length record puts a stop to the four-year hiatus with Daniel  significantly taking charge in the production of almost the entire album which he professes to be his most personal release to date.

Once the release date came, it nearly felt like the entire world paused to play it. "Always"  was an early favorite that turned into a bonafide Tiktok hit. "Let Me Go" has also turned into an instant fave as well.

Filo  Caesar die-hards are also in for an extra-special treat as one of the top local indie r&b and soul artists has been announced as an opening act for him. Jason Dhakal , known best for his songs like  “Manila,”   “Body & Soul,” and more will be performing before Daniel Caesar! Sonically, Jason is the perfect compliment to set the mood for the night and his performance will definitely have fans in their feels.

Here are the rest of Daniel Caesar favorites we're rooting for him to perform this Wednesday:

Daniel Caesar Flexes ‘Superpowers’ in Manila World Tour Stop

daniel caesar tour manila

After a long four year hiatus, Daniel Caesar made his heavily anticipated return to the Philippines for his SUPERPOWERS WORLD TOUR on July 19. The one night special, which went down at the Manila World Trade Center, also appropriately featured local singer Jason Dhakal setting the tone as an opening act. After the “Body & Soul” & "Manila" artist warmed up the crowd, the sold out audience waited in excitement for the Toronto native crooner’s entrance. Daniel Caesar fittingly began his set with “Ocho Rios,” the lead off track from his most recently released album “NEVER ENOUGH.” His hour-long set ran through crowd favorites from his latest project like: “Do You Like Me?” and “Let Me Go” — but no songs received better fan-fare than “Valentina” and “Always.”  In addition to performing his newer material, Caesar went deep in his catalog to perform classic records like: “Streetcar,” “Japanese Denim,” “CYANIDE,” and more. Perhaps the concert’s two highlights were “Best Part,” which included a proposal in the audience mid-song. Daniel Caesar also came back from for an encore and closed out his set with a show-stopping crowd assisted rendition of “Get You.” During the show, he promised to come back to the Philippines soon and we can’t wait for new music and his return here!

Four years after his last show in Manila for his CASE STUDY 01 Tour, Grammy-winning r&b artist Daniel Caesar came back to the city last July 19 to vibe with his Filipino fans once again for his SUPERPOWERS World Tour, this around at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

daniel caesar tour manila

Hues of blue and white filled the venue as the opening act, rising Filipino soul artist Jason Dhakal, took over the World Trade Center stage. The promising singer did not hold back and took charge of the crowd’s atmosphere before heading toward the main act. With tracks like ‘Endlessly+Tenderly’, ‘can’t get enough’, ‘ur man’, ‘manila,’ ‘Body & Soul’ and even an unreleased track as a treat, Jason Dhakal exuded elegance, mystery, and flavor that may have left the audience wanting more.

Not long after that alluring performance, Daniel Caesar finally stepped foot in front of the audience, camcorder in hand, belting out ‘Ocho Rios’ while capturing the spirit of live music here in Manila. Fans of the r&b singer proved themselves by singing along with the artist starting from the first note of the opening song. More tracks from his freshly-released “Never Enough” and the 3-year-old album “CASE STUDY 01” namely ‘Let Me Go’, ‘ENTROPY’, ‘Do You Like Me?’ ‘OPEN UP’, ‘Valentina’, ‘Always’.

The mood slowed as Daniel Caesar brought out his guitar to mellow the surrounding tension, starting with the angsty yet melancholic ‘Violet’. The track that followed was a track that every romance scene is made out of — ‘Best Part’. And what a way to highlight this night is the proposal that erupted in the middle of the song! A man took the perfect opportunity to kneel to the woman of his dreams smack center in a Daniel Caesar concert, with Daniel Caesar himself singing this Grammy-winning song in the background. If life were a movie, this moment would surely be their best part.

Following that movie-esque scene, Daniel Caesar continued with ‘Invincible’, his duet track with indie/r&b artist Omar Apollo. More tracks from ‘Never Enough’ made their way into his setlist, including ‘Please Do Not Lean’, ‘Disillusioned’, ‘Unstoppable’, and ‘CYANIDE’ from ‘CASE STUDY 01’.

The show is ending as Daniel Caesar keeps the pace relaxed and hits it off with a stripped-down version of ‘Japanese Denim’, the slow ballad ‘ARE YOU OK?’ and a beautiful rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Sparks’. Daniel exited the stage after a back-to-back stripped performance, leaving the fans wanting so much more. Of course, he would not stop the show there and returned, camcorder present again as the booming bass notes of ‘Get You’ pumped throughout the venue. The crowd was in for a sing-a-long as Daniel captured the moment from every single view and angle. The show ended on a high note for sure, and it was a night that was not only recorded in phones, digital cameras, film cameras, and camcorders - but a euphoric memory always to be recalled.

Japanese rockers King Gnu on new music, their first tour abroad, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ and more

NME catches up with King Gnu on their Asia tour to talk frontman Daiki Tsuneta’s side project Millennium Parade, collaborating with Daniel Caesar and more

King Gnu, photo by press

In a new interview with NME , Japanese rock band King Gnu have discussed touring abroad for the first time, frontman Daiki Tsuneta’s upcoming collaborations with Daniel Caesar , and much more.

NME caught up with the quartet at the Singapore stop of their sold-out Asia tour in April, which also called at Taipei, Shanghai and Seoul and marked the J-rockers’ first-ever tour abroad. King Gnu sold out all seven shows on the tour – a victory lap after the band’s sold-out dome tour in Japan three months prior.

King Gnu have been touring behind their eclectic, flamboyant 2023 album ‘The Greatest Unknown’. It’s their fourth record and first full-length release since their theme songs for the blockbuster anime Jujutsu Kaisen propelled the already popular and beloved band to new levels of prominence.

Will King Gnu continue their relationship with Jujutsu Kaisen by releasing new music? NME finds out in this interview, which also covers frontman Daiki Tsuneta’s sessions with Canadian R&B artist Daniel Caesar, among other artists, and collaborating with celebrated director Mamoru Hosoda through his side project Millennium Parade (which just released a new single, ‘Goldenweek’, on top of signing to new labels in the US and UK).

Hello, King Gnu. In January you finished a sold-out dome tour of Japan. How did it go and what was most challenging?

Daiki Tsuneta : “Having our audience understand the concept of King Gnu was the most challenging thing. We played to 380,000 people in total.”

Tsuneta-san – I saw you posted photos of yourself bleeding on stage. What happened?

Recommended

DT : “I was in the zone and very engrossed. I actually can’t remember what happened. I only realised I was bleeding afterwards.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 常田大希 – Daiki Tsuneta (@daikitsuneta)

Hope that doesn’t happen again in Singapore… This Asia tour is your first international tour. Congratulations. How has it gone so far?

Kazuki Arai : “This is our second show. We’ve only played Taiwan so far. We’ve been enjoying it.”

Were the fans in Taiwan different from what you expected?

KA : “There’s a bit of a cultural difference. Comparing Japanese and Taiwanese audiences, the Taiwanese audience seemed to prefer the ballads.”

I wanted to ask about the band’s creative process. I know that for ‘The Greatest Unknown’ you worked in a studio that Tsuneta-san built, and you each focused on your own individual parts . Are you going to keep working like that?

DT : “It does seem like the most appropriate approach.”

Are you already thinking about new music?

DT : “Of course.” [ all laugh ]

Some musicians can’t think about new music when they’re touring. But it sounds like you’re always thinking about music.

DT : “I bring a case of instruments and recording gear with me to continue creating music on the road.”

Speaking of music, I wanted to ask about collaborations. Tsuneta-san, you were in the studio with Daniel Caesar last year. How did that happen?

DT : “There is a musician called Saya Gray, Daniel’s bassist – we met through her. We created about three songs together, which will be released in the near future.”

And you also hung out with the producer Tainy and rapper Denzel Curry …

DT : “I had the chance to work with Denzel last year. That’s how we met. I didn’t know reggaeton before, but I went to Miami and discovered the genre there. There’s great music over there.”

And Tainy is one of the big stars of reggaeton, too.

DT : “An OG.”

Exactly. King Gnu did the opening and ending theme of the Shibuya Incident arc of Jujutsu Kaisen (you also did the themes for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 , the movie). We know that the Jujutsu Kaisen anime is coming back and will start a new season at some point. Will you return to do the music?

KA : “We cannot disclose.” [ all laugh ]

Good to know… Iguchi-san, you were a voice actor in the recent game Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth . What was that experience like?

Satoru Iguchi : “My mum really loved the game – I did it for her. I was together with other voice actors, and spoke quite normally during recording. I was so happy that I cried when I saw the game at home.”

Did your mother enjoy seeing you in it?

SI : “She’s already cleared the whole game.” [ all laugh ]

And speaking of other King Gnu side projects – Tsuneta-san, you have Millennium Parade. I love the song ‘U’ that you did for the movie Belle with Mamoru Hosoda. What was it like working with him?

DT : “I was actually supposed to do the entire score, but due to my schedule I had to cut my involvement short. I hope to be more involved next time.”

After you embark on this tour, what’s next for King Gnu? Are you going to get back into the studio, or take a break?

DT : “Our drummer is going to the UK.”

Yu Seki : “I’m going to study over there. I’d love to understand London’s music scene more – everyone there seems to be doing what they like, and doing things that are commercially viable as well.”
