ALBUM REVIEW: Journey – Live in Japan 2017

Eagle vision/universal - 29th march 2019.

12 November 2019 Mark Diggins

journey live in japan 2017

I’m not sure I really need to see or hear another live DVD by Journey, much as I love the band and think they are great live the thought of another DVD to add to the collection just doesn’t get those sparks flying. But wait what is this?  Oh it’s the DVD of that special show in 2017 when Journey played the Budokan in Japan and did a set that consisted of playing two of their much-loved classic albums – ‘Escape’ (1981) and ‘Frontiers’ (1983) almost in their entirety. You know that great set that none of the rest of us actually got to see unless you caught the handful of US dates where they repeated it…

Well now you can witness that magical night second-hand via yet another DVD (in fairness it is their first Live DVD since 2010), when you and I know that we’d rather have seen this played out live ourselves. The setlist of course as you might imagine holds few surprises, though with ‘Escape’ being performed first you are in the strange position of hearing the band’s most recognisable song ‘Don’t Stop Believin” played first up.

It’s worth noting too that the band from the recording of these albums back in the 80’s are all still on stage including drummer Steve Smith with the exception of course of new vocalist Arnel Pineda who fill’s Steve Perry’s role.

The songs are great, the band is on form, the set and lighting is rather basic, letting the music do the talking and it’s all really rather good even if there are a couple of clunkers on those albums, I’d forgotten how unmemorable ‘Back Talk’ was!

The only real surprises comes in the form of the inexplicable omission of Frontiers’ ‘Troubled Child’ (I love that song) and the inclusion instead of the underwhelming ramble that is ‘La Raza Del Sol’ (the B-Side to Escape’s ‘Still They Ride’) and Journey’s most twee song ‘Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin” from 1979’s ‘Evolution’ album which acts as a finale.

Great album even with that odd ending…

Kicking off the 2-hour set with ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’, Journey kicked into high gear, presenting a set not just of their hits, but deep album cuts like Escape’s ‘Lay It Down’ and Frontiers’ ‘Back Talk,’ which haven’t been played live since the albums’ original touring cycles.

The concert, presented with a minimal stage set, without big extravagant light shows or monitors, let the music do the talking. The spectacular musicianship of Neal Schon (founder / guitarist), Jonathan Cain (keyboardist), Ross Valory (bassist), Steve Smith (drummer), and Arnel Pineda (lead vocals) shines on famed hits like ‘Open Arms,’ ‘Who’s Crying Now,’ ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),’ and ‘Faithfully.’

Journey ‘live in japan 2017: escape + frontiers’ detailed.

Posted by Buddy Iahn | Feb 14, 2019

On February 7, 2017, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Journey proved their status as one of rock’s best live bands when they brought their landmark albums Escape (just in time for its 35th anniversary) and Frontiers to the legendary Budokan stage in Japan. Kicking off the two hour set with “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Journey kicks into high gear, presenting a set not just of their hits, but deep album cuts like Escape ’s “Lay It Down” and Frontiers ’ “Back Talk,” which haven’t been played live since the albums’ original touring cycles. Journey Live In Japan 2017: Escape & Frontiers

journey live in japan 2017

Featuring 26 songs, this release is jam-packed with music. It contains every song from Escape and Frontiers except one. Read my new interview with Journey’s Jonathan Cain to find out which song didn’t make the cut and why.

This set is being offered as a DVD/CD or Blu-ray/CD combo and it is not available digitally. Regardless of which one you buy, you’re in for a long, energetic, and highly enjoyable performance.

What really impressed me was Journey’s newest member: Travis Thibodaux. He’s a studio musician that befriended Jonathan Cain a few years back. Now, as illustrated in this concert, he provides amazing lead vocals on several classic cuts that require a higher range, while simultaneously beefing up the band’s sound with his keyboard playing. It reminds me of how the Eagles now have Vince Gill lending his voice and guitar to the band, providing a new, yet familiar, texture to the music. In both cases, doing so adds a level of variety and freshness to unforgettable music. I highly recommend picking up Live in Japan 2017: Escape & Frontiers because it’s a new take on timeless music that has defined generations.
