Spain Touring Holidays Frequently Asked Questions

For those looking for the sunnier side of Spain then a trip to Andalucia is the one for you. Rolling hillside, rivers and farmland border charming towns, amazing nature and beautiful beaches. A true paradise and a popular tourist destination. But Andalucia is not only known for it’s beautiful beaches and sunny days, you can also enjoy the snow-capped peaks in Grananda.

For the culture vultures, the Mosque in Cordoba, the Alhambra Palace in Granada and the Giralda in Seville are just a small part of the rich historical and architectural heritage that has been preserved in this Southern region of Spain. Andalucia is also famous for its amazing white villages, Moorish architecture and Gothic churches, and not forgetting that it was the birth place of artist Pablo Picasso!

Spain’s easy connection to France means you can take a breath-taking trip through the Pyrenees mountains via the little trains of Pyrenees from one country to another, giving you the opportunity to take in the dramatic landscape of the Cap de Creus National Park, the medieval walled city of Thuir, the Byrrh Caves and many a vineyard on route. A nice way to explore two countries for the price of one!

Few holiday destinations offer such an alluring array of prominent natural scenery and attractions to visit as Spain. From the Amber palace to the Roman Baths, and white washed houses of Andalucia .

The country is also fascinating for its range of cultures and history. Many Spanish cities have ancient Roman ruins, Islamic architecture from the Moorish period, medieval castles and fortifications along with Castilian- and Hapsburg-era palaces and mansions.

For the Historian, Antequera is for you, here you’ll see the Roman Baths, 16th century Arch of the Giants and the megalithic tombs.

For opera fans you’ll want to head to Seville for the atmospheric setting of Bizet’s Carmen and Mozart’s the marriage of figaro.

No matter where you travel to in Spain the food is magnificent. Full of fresh local fruit and vegetables and just oozing colour. Top dishes to try are:

  • Paella – a rice based dish, jam-packed with flavour, usually including meat such as chicken, rabbit and/or seafood.
  • Gazpacho – a smooth blended soup full of the reddest, ripest tomatoes, peppers, garlic, olive oil, and cucumber. A dish best served cold
  • Patatas Bravas – one of the first dishes to try as part of the famous Spanish tapas. A fried potato dish in a sweet and slightly spicy sauce often including garlic, onions, and sometimes sausage. A dish that varies by region but is always a tasty treat.
  • Tapas – a selection of small, grazing dishes that tantalise the taste buds, known more commonly as canapes or snacks to us Brits. Dishes include Patatas Bravas (as above), Chorizo al vino (Smokey Spanish sausage cooked in wine), Tortilla Española (omelette filled with potatoes, onion and herbs) and Gambas al Ajillo (prawns sauteed in olive oil, garlic, chili peppers, sherry, paprika and topped off with a peppercorn sauce).

Spain has a number of different climates based on region, but in general, it enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and relatively mild winters. The main regional difference are between the South, Balearic and Canary Islands where temperatures climb into the mid to high 30s during the summer and the mountainous areas such as the Pyrenees which is often snow-capped.

Travellers often find that March to May or September to November are considered to be the best times to visit Spain but in truth, anytime is good as long as you have the right clothing packed for your travels.

Here’s our top tips

  • Spring - If you’re travelling to Spain in spring, then it’s wise to pack some warmer clothing like a cardigan or jumper as the evenings can drop a little cooler than the days.
  • Summer in Spain is a warm dry heat, so loose clothing and materials like linen are ideal as they allow for breathability and comfort.
  • Autumn in Spain can remain relatively warm but gets cooler pretty quick so a mix of cool and warm clothes should be packed, layering works well for this season.
  • Winter in Spain is similar to Britain so do pack warm clothes. Not surprisingly, it is also the rainiest of the seasons, so a waterproof coat/jacket or umbrella wouldn’t go a miss.

This was a great tour to see a lot in a short time. Tour guides were knowledgeable. Lots of time spent on the bus, but trip covers a great distance. Had some lovely stops along the way. Clara, our guide in Seville was excellent! We really enjoyed her tour through the city - extremely knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour!

We had 2 different tour guides. The first guide Gonzalo was excellent. The second guide was arrogant and rude -Manu was his name. His primary concern was that we arrived back at the bus on time and repeatedly spoke to us like children. He publicly chastised me over the speaker system on the bus because I commented on his comportment. He did not provide a positive or fun experience for us. It felt like he did not enjoy his job and we were an inconvenience. Everything else was good.

What people love about Coach / Bus Tours in Southern Spain

Awesome tour with Europamundo! Enjoy every bit of it. Seville was amazing, overall, an excellent tour. Looking forward for my next year tour with Europamundo
The 4-day tour in Andalusia was very well organized: in a short time we covered great distances, visited important sights and learned many new interesting things. In short, the trip was excellent. The main merit had the Riad guide - an encyclopaedia with great capacity to transmit information/communication, extremely polite but firm. Also the local guides excellent.

Spain is as diverse as they come from the sun-blessed beaches adorning the Costa del Sol's sunshine coast to the architectural splendour of Gaudi in Barcelona , the stunning alpine landscapes of The Pyrenees to the rugged beauty of The Balearics . Add to that the highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches in the Med ( Costa Brava ), and a coach holiday to Spain is likely to make you want to return quicker than you can click a pair of castanets.

Catalonia

There are very few places in the world where futuristic buildings stand next to ancient Roman cathedrals but you'll find them here in Spain. If you enjoy discovering the culture of a destination, you'll want to visit the medieval towns of Catalonia or Valencia. You'll also enjoy a visit to Bilbao including the Guggenheim Museum and Euskalduna Palace.

Alicante is the place to be if you're looking for a mild but pleasant climate combined with sandy beaches that appear to go on forever. This fine city is thoroughly Spanish with its wide esplanades and seafront promenades but there is also an air of Africa about it. Head into Alicante's centre and you'll find it brimming over with baroque buildings which are testament to the city's past as a major seaport.

Spain isn't just a hot spot for sun seekers from the UK, steeped in heritage and history the cities are well worth exploring and discovering. Here is just a selection of the places you can visit during your holiday:

Barcelona Explore this city by wandering through the narrow alleys, be sure to stop and browse in the boutique shops and tapas bars whilst in the Gothic Quarter. Whilst in Barcelona, you cannot miss the Parc Guell and the Church of Sagrada Familia, designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudi. You can also catch the cross-harbour cable car to the old port district of Barceloneta.

Benidorm A coastal town located in the south east of the country, Benidorm, has thousands of holiday makers flocking to catch some sun here every year. The town is very popular with families as it has three beautiful beaches that are perfect for lazing about and watching the world go by such as Playa del Mal Pas, Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente.

Madrid The Capital City of Spain, Madrid is located in the heart of the country. To see this city from a different angle, take the Teleferico Madrid Cable Car – it travels 2.5km over Casa de Campo and Parque del Oeste. If heights are not your cup of tea, explore the Real Palacio de El Pardo instead. The Palace is partially opened to the public where you can see the gaudy interior and some beautiful tapestries.

Rioja Located in the northern part of Spain, Rioja is an area steeped in Spanish heritage and tradition. Be sure to visit the winery and museum of the Museo del Vino Dinastia Vivanco. If you prefer to admire classic Spanish architecture, visit San Millan Yuso Monastry, where you can enjoy a guided tour that will explain the local heritage. Please note that there may be a long wait for English speaking guide so be prepared!

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Spain, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the  Foreign and Commonwealth Office  (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance You should apply for a free  UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)  before leaving the UK when you are visiting Belgium. Please note this card is not a substitute for travel insurance or medical cover, however, you will be entitled to state provided medical treatment at a reduced cost or sometimes for free if this is required during your stay

Local Laws and Customs You must  always be able to provide ID  (your passport) if requested to by a Police Officer. The Police do have the right to hold you at a local Police station until your identity can be confirmed.

Entry Requirements If you are planning to visit Spain, you must meet the following passport requirements.

Your passport must be: - Issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’) - Valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Please note: If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. These extra months do not count towards your passport validity.

Visas You can travel to Spain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Please note that any previous visits you have made to the Schengen countries within the last 180 days will count towards your 90-day limit.

Passport stamping Your passport will be stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Spain as a visitor. These passport stamps are used to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit in the Schengen area.

Any other nationality looking to visit Spain must contact the local embassy to check visa requirements.

Alsa Bus and Multi-Day Coach Tours of Spain

In contrast to many other European countries, Spain has a comprehensive national network of bus and coach services allowing visitors to get pretty much anywhere at a reasonable price. Buses tend to be considerably cheaper than trains so there are a lot more Spanish people who choose bus travel over train travel when getting around by public transport.

Table of Contents

Bus Tickets in Spain

Getting a seat is not normally a problem and for relatively short journeys (e.g. Madrid to Valladolid) you can just turn up and buy your ticket for the next service. However, for longer distance trips and especially popular routes in peak season (e.g. Madrid to the Costa del Sol) it is advisable to book at least a day or two in advance.

Return tickets represent better value than two singles. Also, if you are buying long-distance tickets in advance, or by internet, remember to have your passport handy as some operators ask to see proof of ID before allowing you to board.

Useful websites for ordering bus tickets online include the following:

  • ALSA – national services and several airport connections.
  • Movelia – for information on all major operators.
  • Socibus – Madrid to Seville bus services

ALSA Bus Travel in Spain

Don’t think that taking the bus has to mean compromising on comfort. In Spain, the major operators offer modern and comfortable vehicles. For example, ALSA, Spain’s leading coach company and part of the leading international transport group National Express Group, operates a large national network and has services to suit all budgets.

In addition to standard class, ALSA’s superior “eurobus” and “supra” vehicles also operate on key routes. Supra coaches generally travel non-stop, and as well as saving time, they are fully fitted with leather seats and have bags of extra leg room. They also have on-board catering with hostess service included in the ticket price – truly bus travel for the 21st century!

Travelling by bus in Spain is easy, comfortable and affordable. As there is more than one bus station in large cities, it’s important to find out from which station your bus leaves.

Multi-Day Coach Tours of Spain

An often overlooked way of seeing Spain is to book a coach tour. These tours are available from a number of major locations in Spain and Portugal with a wide range of itineraries to suit anyone interested in this mode of transport. Whilst there are tours originating in other European countries which then drive down to Spain there are others which begin in Spain so you’ll need to arrange your own transport to Spain before beginning the tour.

The length of individual tours ranges from just two days travel with just one overnight to as much as 18 nights which is a grand tour of Spain and Portugal. Some itineraries also allow for extensions into Morocco. Departures are available from Madrid, Barcelona, the Costa del Sol and Lisbon.
