Cruising the Adriatic Coast on the Marella Explorer

You need to visit | Family Travel Blog

Five countries in seven memorable days.  Cruises are a fantastic way to see the world and we picked the Marella Explorer cruise which would allow us to experience multiple countries and ports in a single holiday on their Adriatic Explorer itinerary.

Marella is the cruise line from TUI aimed at the British market, and our ship, the 1,924-passenger Explorer was full of activities and entertainment for all ages.

We loved the itinerary, the wide range of restaurants and facilities on-board which ensured that it offered something for all ages. The dress code on board is relaxed and smart – no shorts for dinner, but no tuxedo evenings either – so it’s great for families.

What we really liked about a Marella cruise was the fact that everything from flight to transfers was taken care of which differs from a lot of the other cruise lines.  Being able to fly from our local airport was another bonus and the fact that Marella offers an all-inclusive cruise ensured that we had no tips or service charges to worry about when we checked out.

Here’s what we experienced on the Marella Adriatic Explorer cruise, and why we would highly recommend it for your next family holiday:

Day 1 – Corfu, Greece

We’re starting in Corfu, it was great being able to fly from our local airport with TUI straight to Corfu.  It was so well organised and once we had touched down, collected our baggage,  and a short bus transfer later we were at the port ready to embark on our first family cruise.

The ship didn’t leave until just before midnight but as our flight from the UK was not due to land until early evening, we didn’t get a chance to explore this part of Greece, but we had enough to explore on the Marella Explorer to keep us busy.

Our two interconnecting large balcony rooms were perfect for a family and after the sail away, we had the first taste of the culinary delights onboard at one of the inclusive restaurants Vista.

Day 2 – At Sea

This is our only day at sea, and gives us the chance to check out the wide range of family friendly facilities and activities on-board.  The adventure golf and pool is an instant hit with the girls and once we knew they were entertained we were able to sit back and relax and enjoy everything the cruise had to offer over the next 7 days.

Day 3 – Koper, Slovenia

After sailing the length of the Adriatic we arrive at our first destination Koper, Slovenia.  We explore the cobbled streets of its medieval centre which has many Venetian influenced landmarks such as the Praetorian Palace for a quick look before our coach leaves on our first excursion.

We booked it through the Marella Navigator app and visited the vast underground network of caverns and tunnels at Slovenia’s Postojna Cave, which are amazing and well worth visiting.

We wish we had more time in Slovenia as it was such a beautiful country, but we are already planning a return trip to their capital Ljubljana in the future.

Back on board we enjoyed freshly made pizza and pasta at the Mediterranean restaurant for lunch before heading back into Koper, which was a 5 minute walk from the ship.  That evening, we had another excellent dinner at the Latitude 53 restaurant before having fun at the silent disco, the girls loved this one.

Day 4 – Trieste, Italy

One of my personal favourites was Trieste in Italy, and I’m so glad we did this instead of spending the majority of the day on a coach visiting Venice.  Trieste is a hidden gem for most UK tourists, located in the North East corner of Italy, close to the Slovenian border.

Like Venice it has its own Canal Grande, lined with cafes, restaurants and small boats but without the crowds.  The architecture in the city is spectacular and one of the most spectacular is the main square of  Trieste, Piazza Unità d’Italia.

There was so much to see and do here, from seeing Roman amphitheatres to good shopping, plus it had an Eataly, one of our favourite Italian restaurants to dine and shop at.  Back on-board we take in the stunning Adriatic coastline especially at sunset and enjoy dining in Latitude for the Gala evening.

Day 5 – Split, Croatia

Split, the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest on the Croatian coast is our next stop.   In Split, where we booked a stadium tour of Hadjuk Split FC on the outskirts of the city and made use of Uber in Croatia for the first time.

Back in the city we stepped back in time at the Diocletian palace of the Romans which dates back to 300AD and exploring this historic port city.  When the girls came across Froggyland in the city they couldn’t resist visiting, this is one of the weirdest museums you will ever visit but they loved it.

In this hot weather the lure of the pools on the Marella Explorer was hard to ignore and we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing and cooling down from the Croatian sunshine.  As we set sail for our next adventure, one of my favourite things to do is watching the stars in the night sky from our balcony, it’s so peaceful and the skies are so clear.

Day 6 – Dubrovnik, Croatia

Waking up each morning with an incredible view of a new destination is one of my many highlights each day on board the Marella Explorer.

Today, we are in the city of Dubrovnik, known for its distinctive old town which has been awarded an UNESCO world heritage site.  The main cruise port here is located in the Gruz area and approximately 3km away from the old town, so its too far to walk in the summer heat.

We booked tickets for the Dubrovnik Cable Car online and called an Uber to pick us up from the cruise terminal.  The cable car is one of the best ways to have a birds eye view of this stunning fortified city and its coastline.  The girls loved it and brought back memories of our recent cable car ride in Funchal, Madeira.

At the summit there is a restaurant and three different viewing heights , each offering their own vantage unique points for some great photos.  We spot a zip line at the summit which provides a unique way to see the city and the girls really wanted to do it – but like most things post pandemic, it needed to be booked online in advance.

The exit from the return leg of the cable car is a short walk from the entrance to one of the gates to the Old Town.  We didn’t book a city tour but found that a self-guided tour using Google Maps worked really well, taking in lots of the sights of one of the most beautiful cities we have visited.

Holly found the Onofrio fountains the perfect place to cool down from the heat before heading through the iconic Pile Gate to the West Pier – both iconic Game of Throne locations along with the Jesuit stairs, famous for being the walk of shame.

For lunch, we dined at Gradska kavana Arsenal restaurant which unknown to us as we walked through its doors to cool down from the midday heat was that alone with its great food it also offered some of the most picturesque views of the harbour and castle walls.

After lunch we took the girls to the new selfie museum and spent nearly an hour here as the kids personal photographer whilst they had great fun creating new photos for their social feeds.

For great ice cream, check out Peppino’s – we came across this walking toward the Ploce gate as we made our way out of the old town – not only was it delicious, it also helped us all cool down.

Back on ship, the girls head to their favourite spot, the pool for the afternoon and had fun playing table tennis and golf.  Dinner was back at our favourite restaurant, Vista and Chloe was pleased as she managed to get a unique Pandora cruise ship charm at their special shopping evening.

Day 7 – Kotor, Montenegro

Having left Croatia behind, we have an early morning sail into Kotor.  The Gulf of Kotor, is one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea and is often referred to as the southern-most fjord in Europe, although it is in fact a submerged river canyon.  The fjord on the way into Kotor was worth getting up early for (6am), the scenery is spectacular and one of those moments you can’t miss.

The UNESCO old town of Kotor is a well preserved medieval town with gorgeous views in every direction.  We entered the old town through one of its three gates and what strikes you as you walk into its main square is just how beautiful Kotor is.  With glistening cobblestone streets, its iconic clock tower and stunning architecture we couldn’t wait to explore.

Similar to Dubrovnik, Kotor also had city walls that encircle the city which we walked on providing great views of its streets, coastline and cats which Kotor is famous for.  Holly loved seeing them and there is even a museum dedicated to the cats here and we learnt that they are a good luck symbol of Montenegro.

One of the excursions that we had arranged that the girls we really looking forward to was being able to kayak in Kotor Bay and it didn’t disappoint.  Seeing their faces light up as they kayaked around this stunning bay was one of the many memorable moments we have had on this Marella adventure.

We stopped for drinks next to where we kayaked at a stunning little restaurant called Little Bay with views over Kotor beach and the bay, before we walked back into the town to pick up some of the unique souvenirs we had spotted in the morning.

With its meandering, maze like streets its easy to get lost but around each corner was another store to check out, our favourites being the colourful lamps and handcrafted Christmas ornaments or the Bazaar built into a section of the city walls.

A popular option for tourists is to hike up the ancient stone pathway of 1355 steps to Kotor Fortress in the mountains above Kotor, which provides great views of the old town and the bay.  With temperatures in the mid 30’s and possible thunderstorms we gave this 50 minute hike a miss and headed back to the ship for afternoon tea.

Sail away was a little earlier today at 4pm and for the first time onboard we encountered a storm, but took cover under our balcony to watch the sail back into Ionian waters.  For our last evening meal we returned to Latitude, one of our favourites not only for the great food but also the excellent service.  After dinner we enjoyed the live band Collective in the lounge bar before heading to the theatre to watch the last live show of our cruise.

Day 8 – Corfu, Greece

With a flight in the evening, we have a full day to enjoy the sunshine.  What is unique on a Marella cruise, compared to other cruise lines where you have to disembark early in the morning is that you are able to use the ships full facilities and restaurants until the TUI coach picks you up to take you to the airport.

We managed to get a late check-out cabin and skipped an excursion into Corfu old town to spend the last day of our cruise, chilling by the pools and taking in the last of the sunshine and gorgeous views from what has been one of the most memorable holidays we have done as a family.

We were unsure if cruising was right for us before we went and it was an expensive gamble for a family holiday.  However our experience with Marella on their Explorer ship changed our perception of cruising and we are so glad we booked it, we are already planning to cruise again next year.

Great tips, thanks. This sounds like your whole family enjoyed this trip. We are taking a family cruise 11 of us 4 families with Marella in August.

Thank you, an interesting and informative read. We are going on that ship in July , with same itinerary apart from Ravenna, instead of Trieste. Liked the fact that with our late departure from Corfu, we have the option to remain on board and use facilities instead of hanging around the airport for hours.

Very well written, and love the tips and photos. Your family seemed to have a wonderful time. We have just booked this trip this morning so this has really gotten us excited. Thanks so much for sharing! Hx

This is brilliant, we are going on this exact cruise this year our very first cruise and this information is perfect. I do have one question if you don’t mind. Did you book the stadium tour in Split before you went on the cruise? I am struggling to find a website to book tickets and I know my son Would love to go to the stadium. Also was it a long journey to the stadium? Expensive? Thank you

Many thanks. No, we looked on the stadium website https://hajduk.hr/eng/club/stadium/visit to check pricing and availability – then we paid at the club shop in the stadium. It’s only a short car journey from the centre of Split – we used Uber a lot and was really good value.

Brilliant and very helpful review. It’s good to know when you can walk to the destinations from the boat, rather than book an unnecessary (and often expensive) tour. Did the ship provide maps of the towns?

Hi. We are considering this same trip. Can you please advise upon your cabin number and did you think it was the best side for inland views whilst in port. Thanks

Thank you for a very informative description of trips & ship. We are going on this trip in September to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Could you give a little more advise, is very far to walk from the ship into Kotor Slovenia or do you require a taxi ?

It is a short walk to Koper in Slovenia, the ship docks right in the port. Have a fab trip!

Thank you so much for this. We’ve booked the same cruise now as you answered so many of our questions. Thank you for sharing x

Marella Celebration Cruise Ship Review

We joined the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship, one of Marella Cruises ships in Dubrovnik for a 7 night Adriatic Cruise. We had been recommended Marella cruises (then Thomson) via friends and really liked the Adriatic Affair itinerary . The cruise was visiting Croatia, Slovenia, and Albania all places that we had not visited before, and we were excited about that.

The Marella Celebration Cruise Ship is the smallest cruise ship that we have sailed on and we must admit we did have some reservations about that. Here we show you what cruising with Marella on the Celebration was like!

We booked the cruise at the TUI travel shop only 4 weeks before the cruise and was very pleased with the service. Our flight from Birmingham Airport was straightforward and only 2 1/2 hours so before we knew it we were on the coach on our way to the port of Dubrovnik.

Looking down onto Dubrovnik

The transfer from the airport to the port took 30 minutes. Tip – make sure you sit on the left hand side of the coach when leaving the airport, so that you can see the stunning views over to Dubrovnik and the Old Town, and you will have the first views of the ships docked in the port.

Embarkation on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

Embarkation was very easy. We entered the embarkation area and were given a cold drink along with our cruise card, then were asked to wait for the blue group to be called. After only waiting around 5 minutes, we were called and shown on to the ship. The cruise staff guided us to an area in the dining room where our photos were taken and synced to our cruise card. If you want to use the safe in your cabin this is where you purchase a safe key at a cost of 15 euros. The whole process was very easy and we headed straight to our cabin.

Our Outside Cabin on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

We normally book a balcony cabin but unfortunately this time this type of cabin was out of our budget, so we settled for an outside cabin. We were concerned that the cabin would be small. However we were pleasantly surprised, the cabin and the bathroom were bigger than expected.

Our cabin steward Melvin was superb, he was constantly around and we were not sure when he slept! He kept our cabin spotless and entertained us with some towel animals which was great.

The bed was comfortable with memory foam mattress and pillows and we slept extremely well during the whole cruise. This was probably helped by the selection of wines, ciders and cocktails too!

There was plenty of storage in the cabin. Our two cases arrived shortly after we joined the ship, we hadn’t seen them since Birmingham which was excellent and they fitted under the bed easily. There were two large wardrobes, a set of drawers, plus more drawers in the bedside cabinets.

The cabin was well equipped with an english 3 pin plug and 2 x european round 2 pin sockets, so charging gadgets and phones was not an issue at all. The electric did not go off when you left the cabin either which was helpful.

The bathroom was a decent size with again plenty of storage. The shower was adequate and shower gel and shampoo were provided, there was also a shaver socket too. Melvin ensured we were stocked with everything we needed.

Our cabin did not have a fridge which was the only disappointing feature, the mini bar was actually on top of the set of drawers. We didn’t use the minibar as it was an extra cost and even if we had wanted to the drinks would of been warm.

On all of our previous cruises the Sea Pass has always been both your ship identification card and your room key.

The first mistake we made was presuming this was also our door key. We noticed two other keys in the cabin but stupidly thought that this must be the master/spare key that the steward had for our cabin. It wasn’t long until we realised that we were now actually locked out! We explained to Melvin our cabin steward what we had done and he happily let us back into the cabin.

The Sun and Pool decks on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

There are two swimming pools on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship. The main Lido pool on deck 5 and the adult pool on deck 6. The adult pool was smaller and quieter than the Lido pool, a great place for a cool down and chat with fellow passengers. There were also great views from the back of the ship. The Lido pool was more lively with a selection of quizzes, demonstrations and live music in the afternoons. Bar service around both the pool areas was efficient and barmaid Matson was great fun.

The Lido deck and stage on the Thomson Celebration

There were plenty of sunbeds around and more on deck 7, we never experienced sun bed hogging which was a refreshing change. Here’s a short video showing you around the sun decks whilst we were tendered in Korcula.

If you want to have some quiet time, then head to Deck 6 the Promenade Deck. Here you will find sunbeds and chairs where you can relax and watch the world literally go by. We enjoyed a special evening here watching the sunset as we sailed from Koper in Slovenia to Venice, it was wonderful.

Entertainment on board the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

After the bigger ship experiences with full size theatres we were worried than the standard would not be the same. We needn’t of worried as the entertainment on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship was excellent throughout the cruise.

Top Men Band

The resident band for our cruise was Top Men and they were superb. They played at different venues around the ship, and are definitely one of the best cover bands we have ever seen, playing anything from the Beatles to Bruno Mars and always had the crowd going. They were on for 30 minutes slots but we would of liked to see them do longer sets.

Marella Celebration Cruise Ship Review Paul and Carole Love to Travel #marella #cruise #cruising #ship #review #celebration #paul #carole #travel #review #information #thomson #smaller #experience

The comedian James Brandon performed twice during our cruise had us in stitches, he is a regular on the Thomson Fleet and definitely worth a watch.

Broadway Lounge

Considering there is only a small entertainment’s team on board they surpassed all our expectations. The production of My Fair Lady was top class.

My Fair Lady Show on the Thomson Celebration

The Las Vegas Show showed some talented singers, and even Elvis was in the building!

Las Vegas Show

The Captain was very visual around the ship and so were the senior officers, twice during the cruise he presented his staff and it was evident that he was very proud to be part of the Marella team.

Captain and his Officers on the Thomson Celebration

Liberties was a great place to hang out, the entertainment team were always up to something here. Following the shows in Broadway the singers would then come and perform, the Diva’s show was superb. As well as the excellent music, there were quizzes, bingo, films, and game shows that were actually a lot of fun. Melissa and Kate the dancers were very sociable and talented, and great at getting the dance floor full. Must give a shout out here to Florence who was the waitress who looked after us extremely well.

Hemingway’s Bar and Casino

This is on Deck 5 and is a bar area which has a piano music as the entertainment. It also houses the small casino. We did not use these facilities as preferred the Liberties lounge, however it did seem very popular.

Formal night on board the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

This is the first cruise we have been on where we didn’t take all our posh formal wear and ironically we were personally invited by the Hotel Manager Grenville Cartledge to join him and Elaine Mittell, the social hostess for dinner as a 50th birthday treat.

We were very nervous but had the most wonderful evening. They were great fun and the Lobster was amazing. It really has made this cruise special!

Superb Lobster Dinner on the Thomson Celebration

Following dinner we were shown to the reserved VIP seats in the Broadway Lounge. We watched the Concerto Broadway show, which again was an excellent performance from the singers on board. We really were treated like royalty and it was a night we will never forget.

Food and Dining on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

The quality of food on the Marella Celebration was excellent both in the Lido buffet restaurant and the formal Meridian restaurant.

Dinner in the Meridian Restaurant is a great experience, you are not allocated any particular sitting and can go to the restaurant any time. You can ask for tables for two but are encouraged to share with other passengers. We enjoyed this part as we met some lovely people, particularly Peter and Leslie from Market Harborough who were great company and who we spent a lot of time with. Drinks were available throughout dinner and wine waiter Nikola was particularly efficient.

Excellent breakfast in the Lido Buffet Restaurant

The Lido restaurant is situated on deck 6 and food is available from early breakfast through to 0100. The breakfast was superb catering to our british tastes with good thick bacon and black pudding available, in fact there was a great selection of different foods available throughout the day and evening. Afternoon tea from 1530 was a particular favourite, with a selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones with clotted cream and jam!

Afternoon Tea in the Lido Restaurant

There are tables inside the restaurant and outside by the pool so you can eat inside or out. There is also a pizza and burger bar available by the pool area, so there is no chance you will go hungry.

Fruit Carvings

Here’s a short tour around the Lido Buffet Restaurant and the Lido pool area…

There are other dining options available at a cost. We chose to treat ourselves to the Hot Stones Grill at an extra £15.95 each. The setting was outside on Lido deck 5, with the most stunning sunset.

Sunset on the Lido deck on the Thomson Celebration

It included a 3 course meal and a choice of meat, I chose the lamb chops and Paul had the steak and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent, the service superb and eating out on the deck with the sun setting was perfect.

Drinks on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

Our cruise price included the Marella Cruises all inclusive drinks package. This bar menu shows you whats included in that package, however, if you want any of the drinks with the italic next to it you had to pay a supplement.

Bar Menu on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

Paul likes a cider but is not a fan of Strongbow, which was the only cider available on the pre paid package. We decided to upgrade to the Premier Package which included Magners and a selection of wines rather than just house wine, at a cost of £10 extra per person per day. It also included the top shelf spirits as we do enjoy a grey goose vodka too! Bottled water is not included in the all inclusive which surprised us, however the premier package did.

Deck 5 facilities on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

Deck 5 includes the shopping area, Broadway lounge, Hemingway’s Bar and casino, coffee shop and shore excursions desk, here’s a look around…….

Final thoughts on our cruise on the Marella Celebration Cruise Ship

This was our lasting views of beautiful Croatia, this was taken from the coach on the way back to the airport. Tip – remember to sit on the right hand side of the coach to get the best views on the way back to the airport!

Beautiful Croatia

We were sad to leave the ship and could of quite happily stayed for another week. We have been very impressed with the small and friendly atmosphere onboard, all grades of staff were excellent and couldn’t be faulted. From the booking to the flight home Marella Cruises have impressed us. This was our first Marella Cruise experience and we know it will definitely not be our last!

Since this review we have also cruised on the Marella Dream Cruise Ship,   Marella Discovery and Marella Explorer 2 so do check out those reviews too!

We have also cruised with other companies too so do check out our cruising page for more information and cruising reviews..

Please note, some of the cabins on Deck 8 have a different layout, with a fixed double bed against the wall – see our deck plan for the cabin numbers.

Our Outside Cabins feature either a porthole or picture window. They’re 16m2 in size, with twin beds that can be made into a queen-size. Adriatic Affair

Marella Cruises – formerly Thomson Cruises - is to add a fifth ship to its fleet in 2023. Having parted with Marella Celebration and Marella Dream during the pandemic, the line is to acquire Mein Schiff Herz from the parent TUI Group and convert it into Marella Voyager.

The new addition, originally from the same Celebrity Cruises Century-Class as Marella Explorer and Explorer 2, will feature two new venues for Marella – a Mexican diner and a secret speakeasy bar.

Nothing can prepare you for your first sight of Dubrovnik. Lying 216 km (135 miles) southeast of Split and commanding a jaw-dropping coastal location, it is one of the world's most beautiful fortified cities. Its massive stone ramparts and fortress towers curve around a tiny harbor, enclosing graduated ridges of sun-bleached orange-tiled roofs, copper domes, and elegant bell towers. Your imagination will run wild picturing what it looked like seven centuries ago when the walls were built, without any suburbs or highways around it, just this magnificent stone city rising out of the sea.In the 7th century AD, residents of the Roman city Epidaurum (now Cavtat) fled the Avars and Slavs of the north and founded a new settlement on a small rocky island, which they named Laus, and later Ragusa. On the mainland hillside opposite the island, the Slav settlement called Dubrovnik grew up. In the 12th century the narrow channel separating the two settlements was filled in (now the main street through the Old Town, called Stradun), and Ragusa and Dubrovnik became one. The city was surrounded by defensive walls during the 13th century, and these were reinforced with towers and bastions in the late 15th century. From 1358 to 1808 the city thrived as a powerful and remarkably sophisticated independent republic, reaching its golden age during the 16th century. In 1667 many of its splendid Gothic and Renaissance buildings were destroyed by an earthquake. The defensive walls survived the disaster, and the city was rebuilt in baroque style.Dubrovnik lost its independence to Napoléon in 1808, and in 1815 passed to Austria-Hungary. During the 20th century, as part of Yugoslavia, the city became a popular tourist destination, and in 1979 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the war for independence, it came under heavy siege. Thanks to careful restoration, few traces of damage remain; however, there are maps inside the Pile and Ploče Gates illustrating the points around the city where damage was done. It’s only when you experience Dubrovnik yourself that you can understand what a treasure the world nearly lost

Hi Linda....heres my ten pence worth!

Sibenik...lovely old town but lots of steps up to fort/castle on top of hill...we made it as far as medieval monastery garden about half way up. Nice prom with couple of cafes with free wifi.......lovely shops behind seafront in old part....big cathedral.....or you can take a trip to Krka waterfalls which we have done in the past and is wonderful!

Korcula...tender port....lovely to wander old walled town and newer areas each side..very pretty compact old town ...nice cafes with free wifi.

Bari....we did a trip to the Trulli houses in Alberobello (36 pounds each) ...its a world heritage site....Fabulous with a brilliant guide....Bari is a large town/city with beach and promenade but you would (i think) need a taxi, it seemed a long way from where the ship berthed.

It's a lovely itinerary Linda and I'm sure you will love it...we did!!!:)

I went to Koper last year and did the tour to the Postojna Caves, which personally I really enjoyed.

Also went to Venice, I've been twice now and love just wandering around the back streets and exploring, not to mention the sail in and out.

A few years ago I went to Korcula, as Jenny says a nice small town to wander round. I did that after having a tour across the island to Vela Luka, with a wine tasting stop on the way back. The destination wasn't anything special, but it was a nice way to see the island and we had a great young guide who also explained about the impact of the war on the country and how they lived now.

Thanks Jenny & Gary. xx

I think I read somewhere (fb?) that there is a mini train in Bari. I wonder if anyone has been on it and how often it runs. I think there is a big ship in with us, so could be busy.

The trip Jenny mentioned looks good, but don't usually like doing a trip on the last day especially as we have an early flight home. But I have read mixed reviews of Bari, so wonder if it would be a good idea to do a trip

gillhalfpint

[We did Koper from Majesty in May 14 and just had a wander round ourselves. Started off at what appeared to be similar to one of our car boot sales, and I bought a bag which I am still using daily, and want another one. Found a couple of bars for a beer, but didn't get wifi. At a hotel bar I had an amazing pancake with ice cream. We went back on board for dinner, but I left Ray on board and I went off to find a beach for a paddle. That is all I have in my notes.

Thanks Gill, we have been to Koper before. We climbed that big church tower  but I don't think we shall be doing that this time

We might do a trip there.

Piran is lovely and you can get the local bus there.

We did a trip here as there were poor reviews from the first cruise of the season. It was to the Sassi of ???. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't recommended it for people with walking difficulties. There are lots of steep steps and it was very hot at the beginning of June, even for me. Perhaps the Trulli house trip would be better. Spoke to people who had been and really enjoyed it plus they came back via the coast road with good views.

There is a mini train in Bari but it is a long walk to the port entrance to catch it. I didn't see any taxis within the port but that's not to say there weren't any.

If you don't want to walk or take the shuttle bus around town, you'll find mini-train tours on offer right at the dock entrance. Trenino-Tour offers 1.5-hour Bari City Tour drives around Bari's harbour, Old Town and main sights. Eventieturismo offers one-hour tours.

Taxis are also based at the dock gates. They are metered, but roundtrips to local places of interest can be negotiated separately with waitin g time.

I took the paragraphs in red from here:-

http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/ports/newport.cfm?ID=497

They now do a guided sightseeing coach trip to Piran from the side of the ship. It was €20 each...more expensive than the local bus but a commentary nearly all the way to Piran about the geography, history and industries, etc in the area. The only downside was that we didn't have very long in Piran...about 2 hours.

Hi Linda....it was a morning trip to the Trulli village so we were back on board before 2 pm....cases didn't have to go out until 3 am at latest...the show was half an hour earlier that night....it all seemed to work well ....think the Gatwick passengers left at 0730 for their flight. :)

Sorry Linda....Gatwick transfer was 0800...manchester was 0730......

Thank goodness for that, half an hour more in bed :D:D

Hi timid cruiser,

Welcome to Cruise Critic :) Is it your first cruise?

I should like to hear about DIY in Bari too, before I decide about the trip.

In Sibenik the mediaeval garden cafe takes Euros, and the best view is from the cemetery just before the castle entrance, as Jenny says it is quite a trek up there though. Don't miss the sailout.

I lifted this off the ports of call part of this site....it doesn't say how to get into town from ships berth though....it seemed quite a long way to walk.

"Bari was one of our ports of call on a 7 day Adriatic cruise, and we had an enjoyable day. We wandered around characterful old town - its centerpiece is St Nicholas cathedral, complete with some St Nicholas relics. Then there's an impressive castle with an interesting museum. And you'll find lots of small art galleries, shops and cafes. Next we walked along the lungomare (or promenade), then caught a (free) bus for a 5 minute ride along the coast to the Pane and Pomodo (bread and tomato?) beach, where we spent an enjoyable couple of hours. (Though if your cruise is late september, it might be a little chilly by then for the beach). Alternatively you can take a shore excursion to the quaint houses at Alberobello."

When you walked around Bari did you feel safe? We enjoy mooching around ports not just tourist areas.

This is our 4th cruise, the other 3 all being with Thomson.

The 2024 cruise season in Central Adriatic Ports is ready to start!

adriatic affair marella cruise

  • March 22, 2024

The cruise ports of Ancona, Pesaro, and Ortona, managed by the Central Adriatic Ports Authority, will be once again the protagonists of the cruise season in the Adriatic.

On 23rd March, the cruise ship Artemis will open the 2024 cruise season calling the port of Pesaro, Italian Capital of Culture 2024. Its itinerary will continue in the port of Ortona on 24th March, thus letting its passengers explore the beauty of Marche and Abruzzo regions. In both ports, a total of 14 cruise calls are expected up to November 2024, all managed by the Grand Circle Cruise Line company, also thanks to the presence of Athena cruise ship.

The port of Ancona will welcome 60 cruise calls starting on the 5th of April with MSC Lirica, which will arrive every Friday from the Greek island of Santorini until October 25th, with a total of 30 calls. MSC Cruises will enrich its presence in the port of Ancona with the arrival of the brand-new Explora I, the first ship to join the Explora Journeys fleet, which will call twice the Doric port in October 2024.

In addition, in May 2024, Ancona will welcome also Marella Cruises with the ships Marella Explorer 2 and Marella Explorer, with a total of 17 calls, 11 more than in 2023.

Moreover, the Doric port will also be a destination for other luxury cruise companies in 2024: Azamara, Oceania, Ponant, CroisiEurope, Atlas Ocean Voyages and Regent Seven Seas, thus registering a +25% forecast increase of total cruise calls towards 2023.

Does this seem like a good or bad deal on Marella Fly Cruise ?

Marella Fly Cruise in April/May 2025

Return flights from Edinburgh to Dubrovnik

7 nights round Adriatic sea so visiting Croatia/Slovenia

Inside cabin where we get to pick which one

Standard drinks/wifi/tips included (no upgrade to Premium Drinks)

No excursions

Cost for 2 people is about £2,900

If you had £2.9k to spend on a cruise, would you do it on Marella or can you get more/better for your money ? We've never cruised before so trying to get a feel of whats considered a good deal or not.

Eastern med is always slightly more expensive than western med so it’s about right.

you can do a western med cruise called “Highlights of the med” on 6 of May with a seven day stay in Majorca  included for £1521 each base price,Worth a look if you haven’t done the western med before. The same trip with a 4 night stay in Majorca is £1444.

S1971

I can't see the cruise you mention, Eastern med cruises start in Corfu and visit Dubrovnik prior to disembarking back in Corfu, is it the Adriatic Explorer below?

Koper, Slovenia

  Time in port: 09:00 - 19:00

Hi gavman, if you are comparing cruises you need to take everything into account. For example flights,  amount of port days etc. It is not usual for excursions to be included but it's very easy to DIY the ports. WiFi isn't usually included but you can use it in the port buildings and cafes. You don't need to upgrade to the drinks package unless you like the branded spirits etc.  It's possible to not spend anything  if you don't want to, you can come back to the ship for lunch and go ashore again if you want to.  We've done many Marella cruises,  I'm sure you will enjoy it

Ah right, it's just that I checked for April/May 2025 from Edinburgh as per opening post, nothing for April only May and no itinerary starting from Dubrovnik only Corfu on Explorer.

There are some airports which are only used between May and October, Edinburgh is one of them. I don't know your location, but Glasgow and Newcastle are in use year round.

One thing with Marella, they usually have one sea day, and five ports in a week long cruise. Some other cruise lines pad their itineraries out with more sea days.

Another thing we like about Marella is the flight times are stated when you book, so you are able to plan airport parking, hotels etc. Some other lines don't release flight times untill "some point near the criuse"

With regards to the drinks, all the beers and spirits are branded, the standard package gives you Gordons/Smirnoff/Teachers/Bells etc. The premium package gives you Bombay Sapphire/Grey Goose/Glenlivet etc. You also get coffee and soft drink cans from the Coffee shop.

WiFi is now a purchased as a package of data, £12 for 200 mb, £35 for 1Gb etc. but as most people have said just use data in the ports.

We've done a few Marella cruises now, and enjoyed them all.

Thanks all. To be honest, still not 100% sure on Marella. For every good review I read, I see another saying it’s like a Butlin’s holiday camp where the buffets are more like a cafeteria.

Can get 7 day celebrity around same time and similar ports with drinks and tips for a lot less than £2.9k. When adding in flights, brings it online with Marella. I assume the Celebrity experience is a step above Marella.

suech1970

Marella is a great way to start cruising without a doubt, flights, transfers, all inclusive all neatly packaged but wow the prices atm!   The reviews will have you running yourself in circles, so take them with a pinch of salt. Instead take a look at you tube for some ship and cabin vlogs. See if you like the look of the food,  cabins, entertainment etc, there’s plenty out there!

We’ve never found Marella like Butlins, maybe too fun or casual for some, but that’s the way we like to cruise. Yes, I’d say nearly 3 grand is a bit rich for Marella for a week but if the cruises are selling they won’t drop the prices.  I’m having trouble getting my head round one of their 2 weeks cruises around Greece &Turkey costing nearly £5000 😖 😖 😖 but after comparing other lines, it’s in the ball park.

Yes, Celebrity is a step up on Marella.  We’ve done 3 Celebrity  cruises and the ships are a little more glitzy, cabins more modern and the food was generally better but we enjoyed Marella just as much.  If your looking at celebrity’s Infinity, she’s on the smaller side of their ships, great for a first timer. I wouldn’t have no problems booking any of their inside cabins for sure, just check there is no public areas on deck above, ie pool deck, bars or restaurants.  There drinks/Wi-Fi package is definitely worth it 🍹

If you are considering Celebrity, remember to cost in your own transfers and fly out the day before you sail, so overnight in hotel too.

9 hours ago, gavman99 said: Thanks all. To be honest, still not 100% sure on Marella. Comparing cruiselines and prices is very subjective, it comes down to individual opinions.

Yes, some will say Celebrity are a step up with its newer ships etc, etc but having sailed both lines I'm not totally convinced they are that far apart, but that's just me.

For me Marella have upped their game somewhat in recent years and the overall experience is a good one, in general the MDR, buffet and other food areas are good overall, entertainment excellent, crew are the best I've ever experienced.

The other stand out things for me are port intensive cruises, all inclusive drink packages, flights from local airports etc, which you don't always get with other lines.

Either way, whoever you choose just go and enjoy it, one things for certain, you'll be hooked on cruising afterwards.

We have done 4 Marella cruises all on the Explorer(which, incidentally is an old Celebrity ship!). Loved the ship, the staff are amazing, the place is clean and the food is more than acceptable PROVIDING YOU STAY OUT OF THE BUFFET which is the most boring uninspiring restaurant you can imagine serving extremely average food. Even the staff working in there look uninspired. We probably won’t do any more Marella now as they are all fly cruises and as we need assistance in the airports due to the vast distances you now have to negotiate to get from entry to the gate, we have had some really bad service at overseas airports where TUI fly into recently. So it is coach to Southampton for our next 2 cruises, and I must add that we are not the only people saying this.

so if you can cope with long distances in airports, I would say look carefully at Marella but they have raised their prices somewhat and you can now get better deals on other lines.

2 hours ago, pennib said: I would say look carefully at Marella but they have raised their prices somewhat and you can now get better deals on other lines.

Indeed there are better deals out there with other lines, this is just my opinion, but other lines have lowered their standards to get a more competitive base price, P&O in particular are far from their best.

Marella, I agree have raised their prices but not overly significantly in my opinion and they do now have a better fleet, compared to 10yrs ago, albeit still with somewhat older ships.

The real benefit of Marella for me is, I live 3 miles from my local airport, all inclusive works for us, port intensive, but we are fortunate enough that we do not need assistance and can understand why it no longer works for you.

I wish you well for your upcoming travels, whoever it be with, it's on a ship the best way the travel.
