Kevin Hart Is On Track for the Biggest Comedy Tour of All Time

Kevin Hart's upcoming What Now? tour is on track to become the highest grossing comedy tour ever reported to Billboard Boxscore, selling more than 600,000 tickets and grossing $35 million to date -…

Kevin Hart is an enormously popular comedian, with hit movies, albums and television appearances, a huge fan base and global name recognition. Yet it may come as a surprise to learn that his upcoming What Now? tour, which begins April 9 in Texas, is on track to become the highest grossing comedy tour ever reported to Billboard Boxscore, selling more than 600,000 tickets and grossing $35 million to date — and it’s only March.

In New York alone, Hart quickly sold out two shows at Madison Square Garden, along with Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. — a trio of metro-area plays that only the most confident pop or rock stars would even attempt (and he’s already booked a fourth area venue in Wantagh, N.Y. for August 28). To top it off, Hart, 35, will wrap the tour at Lincoln Financial Field in his hometown of Philadelphia on Aug. 30 — making him the first comedian ever to headline a stadium.

Trending on Billboard

By every metric — ticket sales, festival appearances, venue size and the sheer volume of comics doing strong business — live comedy is at its highest-ever level, pulling in annual revenues of more than $300 million, Billboard estimates. But even by that standard, Hart is in a league of his own.

“The tour is truly remarkable,” says Geof Wills , president of Live Nation Comedy (promoter of 60 of the nearly 70 shows on Hart’s tour), citing the $70 average ticket price and the multiple shows in arenas — often two sellouts in one night. While other comics often focus films and television at the expense of full-scale tours, Hart “wants to do the films, the specials  and  the concerts,” says Wills. “Kevin is really going for it all.”

Hart, who is booked by Mike Berkowitz at APA, has been touring nationally since 2009, and began adding arenas to his route a few years ago when doubles at performing arts centers and theaters were selling out quickly. On his last tour in 2012, Hart stepped up to arenas in “quite a few markets,” Wills says. Numerous film roles, an active social media presence, and the non-polarizing nature of Hart’s comedy continue to boost the comic’s popularity.

‘SNL’ Slams Justin Bieber’s Calvin Klein Ads in Kevin Hart-Hosted Episode

Still, the “biggest-ever comedy tour” is a relative term. Jeff Dunham owns the Guinness world record for ticket sales, with nearly 2 million for his 2007-2010 Spark of Insanity tour. In 2009, Dane Cook grossed $26,570,000with attendance of 436,000 from 45 shows — a feat already trounced by Hart projections. (Decades ago, Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy put up big numbers, but abandoned concert tours relatively early.)

And while Wills says What Now? is “without question” the biggest comedy tour he’s seen in more than 20 years of concert promotion, he notes that other elite comedians could meet Hart’s numbers “if they really wanted to — they just don’t.” Dave Chappelle can crush the box office but usually opts for a residency model. He sold out 10 Radio City Music Hall shows — 60,000 tickets — in 2014 “in his sleep,” Wills says, for a gross of $5 million, according to Boxscore.

Still, Hart’s success makes a statement about the overall health of live comedy. Acts such as Louis CK , Daniel Tosh , Amy Schumer , Brian Regan , Hannibal Buress , Patton Oswalt , Bill Burr and Aziz Ansari are “making real waves,” Wills says. “And that’s just tip-of-the-iceberg-ing it.”

Kevin Hart waves to the crowd.

On May 5, Kevin Hart will host the ‘Roast of Tom Brady’ at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum as part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival.

However, that’s far from the only gig the 2024 Mark Twain Prize For American Humor winner has lined up this year.

From April all the way up until December, the prolific 44-year-old comic will perform at venues all over North America as part of his ‘Acting My Age Tour.’

That includes a pair of shows at Westbury, NY’s Westbury Music Fair on June 29 as well as one-offs at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center on June 30 and Poughkeepsie, NY’s MJ Nesheiwat Convention Center on July 20.

“This one is going to hit different,” Hart shared on Instagram , while describing the tour. “We’re on a different level, a different mindset.”

If you want to see what the “Ride Along” star has up his sleeve for his ‘Acting My Age Tour,’ tickets are available for all shows.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find was $16 before fees on Vivid Seats.

To be fair, that low dollar amount is a bit of an outlier (hint, hint- it’s for the Tom Brady Roast); other Kevin Hart shows have tickets starting anywhere from $55 to $389 before fees.

Hoping to find out how much seats are going for at the venue nearest you?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Kevin Hart’s 2024 ‘Acting My Age Tour’ below.

Upcoming Kevin Hart projects

Kevin Hart can’t stop working.

On top of his upcoming tour dates, he also has eight (!) movies and TV shows set for release in the near future.

Here’s what we know about each of the future flicks.

“Planes, Trains & Automobiles”  might sound familiar. In this reimagining of the 1987 classic, Hart co-stars with Will Smith as “a pair of unlikely travel companions trying to make their destinations in time for the Holiday weekend.”

“My Own Worst Enemy”  tells the story of an agent sent on a dangerous assignment and then receives an assist from an unlikely informant. Tim Story has been tapped to direct.

“The Great Outdoors”  will see Hart star in a remake of the 1988 John Candy-Dan Aykroyd comedy where a family on vacation repeatedly gets interrupted by their irritating in-laws. Teena Lewis and Tristan Cantave are set to co-star.

“Ride Along 3”  is an extension of the popular Hart-Ice Cube franchise featuring Hart as a well-meaning high school teacher who applies to the police academy to impress the girl of his dreams (Tika Sumpter). There, he meets her tough brother (Ice Cube), who, you guessed it, takes him on a ride along to set him straight. According to  Looper , director Tim Story wants to take the ongoing series to another country in a future installment.

“Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist”  has just Hart attached now; the series will tell the story of the infamous armed robbery after Muhammad Ali’s historical comeback fight in 1970.

“Borderlands,”  based on the popular video game, takes place on the desolate, fictional planet Pandora. In this abandoned world, adventurers seek out an elusive artifact. The stacked cast features Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Gershon and Bobby Lee.

“Uptown Saturday Night”  centers around a pair of pal’s night out where they chill at an illegal club, come upon a lost wallet and find a winning lottery ticket. Based on the 1974 classic featuring Sidney Poitier, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby and Harry Belafonte. Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope,” “The Chi”) will direct from a script by Kenya Barris (“Blackish,” “Coming 2 America”).

“Monopoly,”  currently in development, finds a boy from the board game’s Baltic Avenue on a journey to make some cold, hard Monopoly cash. Tim Story will direct Hart again in a script by noted sci-fi screenwriter Andrew Niccol (“Truman Show,” “Gattaca”). Here’s hoping the movie, which has yet to enter pre-production, “gets out of jail free.”

“Die Hart 2: Die Harter” signals a return to Hart’s Amazon Prime series where he “plans an innovative action film with unscripted, unexpected scenes to cement his legacy as the greatest,” IMDb reports. Of course, high-stakes hijinks ensue. Nathalie Emmanuel, Ben Schwartz, Paula Pell and John Cena co-star.

Kevin Hart “WHAT NOW”

If there’s one thing Kevin Hart can do, it’s sell shoes.  If there’s one thing Kevin Hart can do better than sell shoes, it’s explode into one of the foremost comedians and entertainers in the industry today.

Hart has continued to work non-stop and 2014 is no exception.  Kevin will next be seen in the Chris Rock directed film, Top Five , alongside Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld and Whoopi Goldberg, and has already completed production on three other comedies slated for 2015, Screen Gem’s The Wedding Ringer , Get Hard , opposite Will Farrell and Ride Along 2 , the sequel to this year’s one-hundred-million-dollar blockbuster hit of the same name. Hart starred earlier this year in About Last Night , a re-make of the iconic 1986 film, which opened to huge box-office success as well.  The consummate worker, Hart is a force in television too, Executive Producing the show, Real Husbands of Hollywood which premiered its third season in September.  Kevin’s determination and work ethic is simply a roll-over from a banner 2013 where he starred in Grudge Match for Warner Brothers, opposite Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro, and Think Like a Man Too , the sequel to its enormously successful predecessor, for Screen Gems.  Kevin also released a feature version of his comedy show Let Me Explain , in the same year.

With his passion for stand-up and entertainment, Hart continues to tour the country to sold-out audiences.

Kevin Hart's journey from stand-up comedy sets in bowling alleys to global tours

By Anderson Cooper , Aliza Chasan , Nichole Marks, John Gallen

April 21, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News

Kevin Hart, now one of the most successful comics out there, struggled to find places to perform when he first started out as a stand-up comedian, so he picked some very unexpected venues.

The 44-year-old entertainer took gigs wherever he could get them: bowling alleys, cabarets and strip clubs. He doesn't "know who thought that comedy and strippers mix," but a strip club performance led to one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career on stage. Hart remembers hearing a woman say, "Oh, baby" during his set.

"[She was] so disgusted and heartbroken that this is what I chose to do with my life," Hart said.

But things turned around for him. Hart is the highest-grossing comedian today. His last comedy tour made grossed more than $122 million and, last month, he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor — as close to a lifetime achievement award as you can get.

Becoming a comedian

Hart has always been confident, friends said. Comedian Na'im Lynn, who's known Hart since Kevin was a teenager, didn't get it at first.

"I mean, it was perplexing in the beginning," Lynn said. "Like, 'Why does this little ugly dude have this much confidence?'"

Hart grew up in a rough neighborhood in North Philadelphia. Home movies made by his mom, Nancy Hart, show he was always the family entertainer. Hart lived in a in a one-bedroom apartment with his brother and mom, who kept a close eye on him.

Kevin Hart

She planned every moment of his day, making sure he went to swim practice and did his school work, even quizzing him to make sure he didn't rush through his assignments. Hart credits her with his drive.

Nancy Hart also kept Hart's dad, Henry Witherspoon, at a distance. Witherspoon was in and out of prison. He was addicted to drugs, which Hart talked about in a 2011 stand-up special called "Laugh at my Pain." Hart describes his dad showing up at spelling bees and debates and treating them as if they were athletic events.

"First of all, you can't cheer for no kid at a spelling bee. It's a spelling bee. It's quiet, I'm focused. I'm in the middle of spelling a very difficult word," Hart said during the special. "My dad shows up late. Busts through the back door high as hell making cokehead noises, alright. Once again, I cannot make this up. Aright, this is all I heard. I'm in the middle of spelling some s–t. Out of nowhere all I heard was: 'Alright, alright, alright. Yeah!'"

The details are heartbreaking, but Hart finds the humor in it.

"I see it for what it was," he said. "But as a kid, that's dad."

Hart's path to success

For a long time, Hart struggled to make it big.

Hart had to contend with the sound of pins being knocked over during his early performances at bowling alleys. He would start jokes over if someone bowled a strike while he was telling a punchline.

Having a strong drive is a huge portion of making it as a comic, Hart said. Comedians who can't get gigs on actual stages need to create their own wherever they can perform.

"It's one of the most hustled entities that exists today," Hart said.

  • Kevin Hart's daughter on her dad's embarrassing jokes

He thought he'd made it when he shot a sitcom for ABC called "The Big House" in 2003. The network flew him out to what's known as the Upfronts to present the show to advertisers and the media. As he waited backstage, the "guy with the microphone" who was directing everyone told Hart his show wasn't being picked up. No one from the network told him — just "a guy named Barry in the back, holding the curtain."

That rejection pushed Hart. He didn't want his career determined by people he didn't know.

"I might be sitting here all day if I don't go grab it and I don't go make what I feel should be mine," Hart said.

Kevin Hart and Anderson Cooper

And that's what he did. He started a small production company, now called Hartbeat, and began developing his own stand-up specials. Hart also marketed himself relentlessly through social media — and Hollywood studios took notice, hiring him for a slew of movies.

From highpoint to controversy

When Hart was picked in 2018 to host the Oscars , it seemed like a highpoint in his career.

"I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time. ... To be able to join the legendary list of host[s] that have graced this stage is unbelievable," Hart wrote on his Instagram at the time. "I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now."

But then comments he made about LGBTQ+ individuals years earlier onstage and on Twitter caused controversy.

Hart stepped down as the Oscars host. He initially didn't apologize for his comments, but then posted an apology the next day on Twitter.

Hart said he spoke with comedian Wanda Sykes and said she explained to him that there were people hurting because of comments like the ones he'd made.

"It was presented to me in a way where I couldn't ignore that," Hart said. "So in those moments of despair, great understanding and education can come out of it if you're given the opportunity."

Bouncing back and developing material for an upcoming tour

Hart has since bounced back. He seems to be constantly in motion, starting with a daily pre-dawn workout. Hart owns a nutrition supplement company. He's also got a fast-food chain, a tequila brand and a $100 million venture capital fund. His entertainment company, Hartbeat, is now worth more than $650 million.

"I'm no longer just the comedian. I'm an investment. I'm a studio," Hart said. "I'm a partner looking for partnerships. Work for hire is not in my best interest if it's a one and done situation."

Kevin Hart and Anderson Cooper work out

He's also working on new material for an upcoming comedy tour called "Acting My Age." He doesn't work with his team in a room to develop his ideas; Hart takes them to small comedy clubs to try them out. Friends and collaborators Harry Ratchford and Joey Wells act as his writing consultants.

Hart doesn't write down his material, instead sticking to bullet points on his phone. He said he wants to make sure the story he's telling is understandable and focused on relationships, friends and aging.

"All things that, no matter where you are and who you are, you can go, 'Aha,'" Hart said.

60 Minutes correspondent Anderson Cooper watched Kevin Hart work out his notes on stage in front of 3,000 people in Pasadena, California. Everyone had to hand over their phones so the material wouldn't leak.

"Like 90% of what I'm going to do tonight I feel like is really good," Hart explained to the audience. "The reason why I took your phones is because of the other 10%. Right? Like just in case. Just in case some of it's not, you don't have no proof."

Wells and Ratchford took notes as Hart performed. Ratchford focuses on structure, where jokes should go in the set, Wells said. Wells focuses on how to make Hart's set just a little bit funnier.

"He might get a standing ovation. I'd go 'That was great. That was great. What if you tried this?'" Wells said.

Hart's sets include embarrassingly revealing stories about his wife and four kids, his insecurities and his many shortcomings.

"It's talking about the things that you aren't afraid to laugh at about yourself," Hart said. "I'm really confident that the laugh that I'm getting, you're not laughing necessarily at me, as if I'm a joke. You're laughing at the experience."

Anderson Cooper

Anderson Cooper, anchor of CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360," has contributed to 60 Minutes since 2006. His exceptional reporting on big news events has earned Cooper a reputation as one of television's preeminent newsmen.

Kevin Hart and his global entertainment company Hartbeat have signed with WME for representation in all areas.

Hart will continue to develop, star in and produce feature films, television, commercials, and podcasts via Hartbeat. Hart was represented by WME for comedy touring, and is now expanding his relationship with the agency. The move to WME comes as Hart and Hartbeat continue to expand their portfolio of multi-platform IP.

Hart, who was named by Billboard as the highest grossing comedian in 2023, recently announced his “Acting My Age” tour.

In addition to producing tentpole projects starring Hart, such as the recent hit Netflix action heist “LIFT” and upcoming series “Fight Night” for Peacock, Hartbeat is also committed to supporting and elevating the next generation of diverse comedic talent.

Outside of Hart-led projects, Hartbeat has the coming-of-age comedy film “Prom Dates” for Hulu, the Tribeca premiere of the documentary feature “Group Therapy,” and “Number One on the Call Sheet” for AppleTV+.

Hart’s entrepreneurial endeavors also include acting as chairman of his VC firm Hartbeat Ventures. He is a founding partner in premium tequila brand Gran Coramino, plant-based quick serve restaurant Hart House and nutritional wellness brand VitaHustle.

Hart continues to be represented by 3 Arts, Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham and Haley Hileman.

Kevin Hart attends the LIFT Photocall at The Corinthia Hotel on January 11, 2024 in London, England.

Kevin Hart wants people to know that some of the stories of his height have been greatly exaggerated.

The actor appeared on Sunday night’s edition of CBS ‘ 60 Minutes , where he spoke with Anderson Cooper and set the record straight. Cooper noted that GQ reported his height as 5-foot-5, while The Los Angeles Times put it at 5-foot-4. “And some other place said you were 5’2″,” Cooper added.

Hart, who talks about his short stature in his stand-up comedy routine, explained why he’s been incorporating those jokes for more than 20 years.

“It’s talking about the things that you aren’t afraid to laugh at about yourself,” he said. “I’m really confident that the laugh that I’m getting, you’re not laughing necessarily at me as if I’m a joke. You’re laughing at the experience. I’m giving you an experience through a story that is relatable. And more importantly, I’m saying things that other people just don’t have the heart to say.”

“GQ said you're 5'5", the L.A. Times says you're 5'4", and some other place said you were 5'2",” Anderson Cooper says to comedian Kevin Hart, who tries to set the record straight. https://t.co/eosLqauiY2 pic.twitter.com/uh7BPaP2XX — 60 Minutes (@60Minutes) April 21, 2024

Cooper asked Hart if he’s a billionaire yet, to which the actor-comedian quipped in response: “None of your business. Man, are you trying to get me robbed?”

Pressed about whether he will be a billionaire, Hart turned serious: “I mean, hopefully, and even if I don’t or if I’m not, I think the better side to what I’ve done is create what can become the new norm for other people in the business of funny, for other people in the business of entertainment, right? Not just being a part of the business, but learning and understanding how to be the business.”

Cooper also asked Hart about the 2018-19 controversy in which he was selected to host the Oscars ceremony but was forced to step down when homophobic comments he’d made on social media and in his stand-up act in the past resurfaced. These included: “I’m not homophobic. I have nothing against gay people. Be happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

“Later on, the understanding came from the best light bulb ever,” Hart told Cooper. “Wanda Sykes said, ‘There’s people that are being hurt today because of comments like the ones that you made then, and there’s people that were saying it’s OK to make those comments today based off of what you did.’ It was presented to me in a way where I couldn’t ignore that.”

He said it was a lesson he took to heart.

“In those moments of despair, great understanding and education can come out of it if you’re given the opportunity,” he added.
