Watch: METALLICA Plays Second Of Two Hamburg Concerts During 'M72' Tour

Fan-filmed video of the sixth show of METALLICA 's "M72" world tour, which took place Sunday night (May 28) at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany can be seen below.

The trek, which launched in late April in Amsterdam, sees the band playing two nights in every city it visits — with each "No Repeat Weekend" featuring two completely different setlists and support lineups. The "M72" tour features a bold new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed METALLICA Snake Pit to center stage, as well as the "I Disappear" full-tour pass and the debut of discounted tickets for fans under 16 years of age.

METALLICA launched the second Hamburg show with "For Whom The Bell Tolls" from the band's second album, "Ride The Lightning" , which came out in 1984. The group's 16-song set also included three new songs from METALLICA 's latest LP, "72 Seasons" : "Lux Æterna" , "Screaming Suicide" and "Sleepwalk My Life Away" .

The setlist was as follows:

01. For Whom The Bell Tolls 02. Ride The Lightning 03. Through The Never (tour debut) 04. King Nothing 05. Lux Æterna 06. Screaming Suicide 07. Fade To Black 08. Sleepwalk My Life Away 09. Orion 10. Nothing Else Matters 11. Sad But True 12. The Day That Never Comes 13. Blackened 14. Fuel 15. Seek & Destroy 16. Master Of Puppets

Opening acts on the tour include Floor Jansen , EPICA , FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH , ICE NINE KILLS , MAMMOTH WVH , PANTERA , ARCHITECTS , GRETA VAN FLEET and VOLBEAT .

METALLICA promises fans who purchase a two-day ticket that they won't see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning the band's 40-plus-year career.

Each weekend offers a variety of "Enhanced Experiences", ranging from access to a meet-and-greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the "Black Box" lounge to early entry into the venue and the Snake Pit. The very popular "Black Laminate" is back, now known as the "I Disappear Ticket", and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with METALLICA for multiple weekends.

A single "I Disappear" ticket purchase gives you access to as many of METALLICA 's 46 headlining tour dates across Europe and North America in 2023 and 2024 as you choose. You decide how many shows you'd like to attend around the world, and for how long, and METALLICA will make it as easy as possible.

According to Billboard , "72 Seasons" sold 146,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It marks the band's 12th Top 10-charting album, of which eight have reached the top two.

"72 Seasons" had the biggest week for any rock or hard rock album since TOOL 's "Fear Inoculum" arrived in September 2019 with 270,000 equivalent album units.

"72 Seasons" was released on April 14 via METALLICA 's own Blackened Recordings . Produced by Greg Fidelman with guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich , it is METALLICA 's first full-length collection of new material since "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct" .

Speaking of the album-making process, Ulrich explained: "It's one of the only things that hasn't changed in 40 years. There'll be a whole slew of riffs and jams and sound checks, then it falls into my lap to go through them and identify, 'That one's great, that one's good, maybe there's a song over here.'"

Regarding the fact that guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo were given writing credits on more than half of "72 Seasons" , Hetfield told the Associated Press : "All four guys were on the floor when we were writing, which is new for us. Usually it's just Lars and I sitting out there hashing it out. It felt really great to have the energy of all four. There's a lot more democracy on this album. Lars and I gave up the steering wheel a little more than usual."

Hammett agreed, saying: "It was much more collaborative. The attitude was just more open. There is less limitations on everyone's creativity and I think that shows."

In the seven years since the arrival of "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct" , METALLICA has reissued some of its classic albums, released a second live album with the San Francisco Symphony , commissioned a covers album featuring the likes of GHOST , VOLBEAT , WEEZER , Corey Taylor and THE HU , and landed on the Billboard songs chart with "Master Of Puppets" after a prominent placement in the hit Netflix show "Stranger Things" .

What Has 500 Speakers, 87 Trucks and 2 Nights of No Repeats? Enter Metallica’s ‘M72’ Tour

How the band is getting most of its fans to buy tickets to two shows in a row — and bringing them closer to the action than ever.

By Robert Levine

Metallica

HAMBURG, GERMANY — The pre-concert VIP tour of Metallica ‘s M72 stadium staging is something of a show in itself.

A few hours before the first of two “no repeat” weekend Metallica concerts — where the band plays different songs every night — on May 26, Jon-Michael Marino , a member of the band’s management team is walking the floor of the Volksparkstadion. It is set up for the band’s performance with a giant ring-shaped stage, the center of which will be a fan-filled “Snake Pit,” and eight monolithic towers of monitors and speakers. Each of the towers is anchored by a raised platform that doubles as VIP seating, with eight folding chairs decorated with the black-and-yellow color scheme of the band’s new album, 72 Seasons .

Metallica Sells So Much Vinyl It Just Bought Its Own Pressing Plant

The platforms are needed to anchor the towers — which weigh in at 11 tons without the bases, Marino says — so the band’s team figured they might as well put seats there, too. For a fee of $7,272 — the price a deliberate echo of the album title — fans can reserve the entire platform for both nights, complete with a cooler full of drinks and some other bonuses, as what the band calls an “enhanced experience.” The platforms are about half as high as the stage, so “you’re right in front of them,” Marino says, meaning the band. “You feel like maybe you should put your phone away.”

Trending on Billboard

“We try to do something a little different every time we go out,” says Cliff Burnstein , co-founder of the management Q Prime, which has managed Metallica for decades. Metallica has already done arena tours in the round, so it wanted to try doing the same thing in stadiums. But the band’s team felt that the normal setup – a circular stage in the center of a football field, would create too much distance between the group and its audience.

Metallica Singer James Hetfield Visits Wounded Ukrainian Soldiers in Hospital

“I was that kid who used to sit in the last row, so I thought, how do you make this better,” remembers Dan Braun , the band’s creative director and scenic and production designer. (Braun, who has worked for the band for three decades jokes he “grew up in that hotbed of the entertainment business: Milwaukee, Wisconsin.”) “You move the stage closer to the crowd” — hence the ring, which has fans inside and out – “and you create twice as many front-row seats.”

That requires a production that travels in 87 trucks — 45 for the band and its setup, plus two groups of 21 each for the steel stage and towers. Loading in and building the stage and towers takes several days, so while the band uses one setup, the other leapfrogs it to the next city on the tour. (There are 130 people in the band’s crew along, plus 40 steelworkers, local hires and truck drivers.)

The load-in is so complicated and expensive that it creates an incentive to play two shows in each venue. “Playing a stadium is so expensive production-wise,” Burnstein says. “The value of doing two shows is there’s only one set-up and load-out, so we’re basically partnering with ourselves to lower the cost.”

Doing pairs of concerts in each city with a pledge to not repeat the same songs, an idea Braun says came from frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, encourages fans to see both shows. “We know from past experience that people will travel for a Metallica show,” Burnstein says — and many fans seem just as interested in traveling for two. (The Hamburg show was packed with fans who would be back two days later, and a few planned to see the band in Munich next year.) Since the band will only play 22 cities in 2023 and 2024, many fans will have to come to them.

Are You Ready for the ‘Country Metal’ Sound? Rock’s Revival Takes Rural Route

At first, the band only sold tickets to both shows together, for about 20% less than it would cost to buy both separately, and Burnstein says that between 80% and 90% of fans at each concert will attend both shows. (Fans who want more can buy one of the band’s “I Disappear” passes , different versions of which allow entry to all the shows the band plays on one continent for a year, two continents for a year, or two continents for two years.)

“A Metallica show is half-band and half-audience,” says Braun, who has thought a lot about how the group and the crowd amplifies one another’s energy. “If the band has a better experience, it’s better for the audience. If the audience has a great experience, it’s better for the band. Anything that gets in the way of that is bad.” To him, the key to the production isn’t the scale but the way it can bring fans closer to the action – to give a stadium the immediacy of a smaller room. “I like to challenge the cliches of Metallica,” which he describes as not just a great metal group but a great rock band. “They’re great entertainment,” he says. “The object is to give them the best platform to interact.”

There’s also a desire to make the show memorable — in this case, enough to see twice. “Once you raise the bar to where it is, how do you keep doing better,” says John Zajonc , known as Lug, who has worked for the band on and off for three decades and helps run the tour logistics. “The scale is massive.”

Metallica's M72 World Tour: An Unforgettable Journey

Metallica's 72 seasons tour - no repeat weekend in hamburg.

metallica live in hamburg 2023 heidi

Published: June 6, 2023  |  Heidi

Thank you Metallica for two unforgettable nights in Hamburg!

A week ago, I returned from Hamburg, where I attended  Metallica ‘s 72 Seasons Tour. What made it truly unique was the “No Repeat Weekend” concept. With a single ticket, I got to enjoy two concerts in the same city, each with a different setlist. It was an unforgettable experience, one of the best in my life, and not just because of the music. So, if you’re a Metallica fan, you’re in for a treat! Get ready to hear my story and dive into the world of Metallica alongside me!

As I wandered into the city centre of Hamburg, near the beautiful Alster, I found myself immersed in a lively and buzzing atmosphere. People from all over Germany proudly sported their Metallica t-shirts, showcasing their love for Metallica. Whole families, spanning different generations, embraced the band’s music and merchandise, instantly connecting with fellow fans.

Even little kids were wearing Metallica tees, which were absolutely adorable! The people I encountered were incredibly friendly and warm, further highlighting their deep affection for Metallica.

On the day of the concert, as I made my way to the stadium, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the train was filled with Metallica fans. It felt as if the entire train had transformed into a gathering of passionate Metallica enthusiasts.

Excited by this unexpected sight, I couldn’t help but call my boyfriend to share the experience through a video call. Now, it’s worth mentioning that my boyfriend can’t even bear to hear the word ‘Metallica’!

It was truly amusing to witness the overwhelming presence of Metallica fans on that train, creating an atmosphere that overflowed with enthusiasm and a sense of unity. While standing on the train, one of the guys pointed at my nail colour and flashed me a smile, which was really cool.

When we arrived at the Volksparkstadion stadium, there were various stands selling bratwurst and beers, and Metallica’s music was playing in the background. It felt like a big celebration for Metallica fans. I even met a group of guys who had traveled all the way from Munich, driving for over 8 hours just to see Metallica in Hamburg! We walked together towards the concert, drinking more beers along the way.

Once we reached the stadium, we had another round of beers before saying goodbye, as we had seats in different sections. However, I’ve already decided that next year, I’m going to get a standing ticket in Munich for Metallica’s concert (which follows the same no-repeat concept). While they stood in the standing section, I made my way to my designated seat.

metallica nails heidi

I found my seat, and there was a couple sitting next to me, as well as two other men who were around my dad’s age. They were really cool! The concert started with the Ennio Morricone masterpiece, “The Ecstasy of Gold,” and then they opened with an AC/DC song. It was really cool to see everyone standing up.

And then, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived. Metallica took the stage, and I couldn’t hold back my tears. Overwhelmed with pure bliss and emotion, I experienced an indescribable feeling. It was my first time witnessing their live performance, and I found myself utterly captivated by the grandeur of the central stage, the mesmerizing play of lights, and the awe-inspiring visuals displayed on the giant screens.

Whenever a song from, “ 72 Seasons ” echoed through the venue, the stage would be bathed in vibrant yellow light, just like the shade I had chosen when I got my nails done before the trip. I absolutely adored the yellow lights; they engulfed everything, from Lars’s thunderous drums to Trujillo’s resonant bass. It had a profound psychological effect on me, deepening my appreciation for the album and the colour yellow.

As an old-school kind of gal, I usually lean towards their older stuff. However, I found myself enjoying a few songs from the new album as well. They delivered an outstanding performance of “Lux Æterna”, “You Must Burn,” and “If Darkness Had a Son.” These powerful tracks had the privilege of gracing both the first and second concerts, leaving an everlasting impression on devoted fans like myself.

As for the older songs, I was thrilled when they played “Sad But True” – it was absolutely amazing! I couldn’t stop singing, and I also loved belting out “Wherever I May Roam” and “One!”

What was truly astonishing, the cherry on top, was when they played “Call of Ktulu”! I never really expected them to perform it in a concert. Wow! And of course, they also rocked the stage with their energetic song, “Whiskey in the Jar.” The crowd joyfully sang along, beers raised in the air.

I adore it when James always says in live shows, “And there is a man like me who loves to hear the Metallica family.” So sweet. They also played “Enter Sandman,” which ignited even more jumping and enthusiasm! And you know who really likes that song? My dad!

The second show was just as incredible as the first. I thought it might feel more familiar, and that I would be slightly less emotional, but that wasn’t the case. I prepared for it as if I were getting ready for a date with my crush, I swear!

The Epic Sequel: Unleashing Metallica Emotions and Merch Mayhem

The second show was just as remarkable as the first. I had anticipated a sense of familiarity, expecting to be less emotional this time around, but boy was I wrong. I prepared for it with the same excitement as getting ready for a date with a crush, I’m not joking!

But before we dive into that, let’s rewind a bit. I had a day of rest between the two concerts, and during that time, I took the opportunity to relax by the serene Alster and do some shopping. I treated myself to a coveted Yves Saint Laurent bag that I had my eye on. However, the very next day, I realised that Metallica merch may come at a lower price but is worth so much more!

I decided to visit the Metallica pop-up store in Hamburg. I expected a queue, but I never anticipated it would stretch for thousands of people, all patiently waiting without anyone leaving. I stood in line for about two and a half hours, and let me tell you, it was an experience in itself. Metallica even offered a chance to win a coveted snake pit prize to those who made a purchase. It was cool, although I didn’t win.

Finally, after the long wait, I stepped into the store, and to my surprise, it was the first clothing store ever to blast Metallica’s music! After waiting for so long, I ended up buying at least five items for myself and my family!

So, I returned to my hotel and began preparing for the second show. I wore a pink strapless shirt (I know, I’m not exactly the typical metal outfit person), but I proudly put on my Metallica “72 Seasons” hoodie over it. Once again, I was surrounded by fans, enjoying the pre-concert atmosphere with beers and music, like a little party before the main event.

Unleashing Emotion: Tears, Kirk on Drums, Trujillo Screaming 'Danke,' and Lars on Guitar - James Calls Upon the Metallica Family

I reunited with the guys who had been sitting next to me the previous night, and together we sang and raised our horns. Yes, I cried again, unable to contain my overwhelming emotions. Metallica brought their full power to the stage, and even Kirk played the drums while Lars handled the guitar! Trujillo was screaming “danke” and “yeahhh,” and James was as sweet as ever when he said, “You are all here to celebrate life with your family Metallica, thank you so much!” It was an incredibly enjoyable experience.

During their performance of “Nothing Else Matters,” everyone in the crowd had their phones out, capturing the beautiful moment. I made sure to film it for my mum since she truly loves that song! Papa Het, aka James Hetfield , is one of my favourite men in rock, and I am really glad I got to see him live.

To sum it up, I am still in shock, and the whole experience was an absolute blast. I didn’t want Metallica to leave the stage! I can’t wait for next year. If you’re a Metallica fan, do yourself a favour and buy tickets for next year’s concert. It’s an experience that is worth every penny. And if you happen to see me there, come and say hi!
